The reproductive performance of ewes and the survivability of lambs to weaning have a critical economic impact on sheep farming worldwide. Further, knowledge of major mortality causes allows an opportunity for improved flock management to evade financial losses. The maximum likelihood estimates for generalised linear mixed models and chi-square test methods were used to examine 971 mating records, 839 and 763 lambs born and weaned (singles or twins) from the Naivasha Sheep and Goats station in Kenya for the years 2011 to 2020 consisting of Dorper, Red Maasai (RedM), and Merino breeds. The RedM (P < 0.05) outperformed Dorper and Merino in weaning rate, whereas reproductive performance between the three breeds was not significantly different (P > 0.05) in litter size and multiple lambings per ewe lambing. On the one hand, Dorper significantly (P < 0.05) outperformed the other two breeds only in weaning weight per lamb born. In addition, among all the major causes of death, pneumonia appeared to be the one to which Dorper breeds were most susceptible (chi-square test, P < 0.05). According to the findings of this study, neither the Dorper nor the Merino sheep breeds were reproductively superior to the RedM in an extensive semi-arid production environment. In addition, Dorper's susceptibility to the leading causes of mortality, particularly pneumonia and sheep pox, were relatively high compared to other breeds and could be a precursor to massive economic losses for Dorper sheep producers. In contrast to the indigenous RedM breed, imported sheep breeds appeared to be more susceptible to major mortality-related under an extensive production system. Therefore, regardless of weaning weight, RedM breed production appears to be a more viable investment for small-scale farmers, particularly in semi-arid regions.  相似文献

Diel vertical migration (DVM) is a complex and dynamic behaviour against predation because the reaction of migrating organisms to light intensity plays a primary role, but is modified by other factors. In the relatively shallow but thermally stratified Lake Eymir, Daphnia pulex de Geers utilized vertical refugia afforded by the hypolimnion during both day and night. Differences in general vulnerability to fish predation determined the differences in their mean residence depths (MRDs) of different population categories such as most conspicuous and vulnerable individuals of adult with eggs inhabited the deepest depth, whereas juveniles stayed close the thermocline. In late spring, profoundly high amplitude of displacement within the hypolimnion, probably due to the hypolimnion being well-lit and relatively well-oxygenated for the fish and rather unsafe for the large-sized daphnids, was recorded. Therefore, the large-sized daphnids daytime refuge was close to the bottom whereas at night they moved upward to benefit from warmer water temperature along with food availability in the presence of fish predation but still remained below the thermocline. In summer, the insignificant amplitude of the hypolimnetic, which later became epilimnetic, displacements were probably due to the near-anoxic condition found below the thermocline. This might have deterred the fish, thus providing a safer refuge for daphnids in the below thermocline, which afterwards became the above thermocline. Low oxygen availability was regarded as the summer proximate factor. The abundant food and warmer water conditions found in the below/above thermocline also accounted for absence of DVM in summer. Consequently, this study suggests that DVM by Daphnia is an adaptation that is plastic to changing environmental conditions.  相似文献

Changes in the taxon ages of fossil marine families that are alive and those that become extinct in each stage of the Phanerozoic reflect changes in the origination rate, differences in the extinction rate of families with different taxon ages, and mass extinction events. Extinct families are generally much younger than the population from which they were drawn. Periods dominated by higher numbers of younger families are more susceptible to larger size extinctions and greater variation in extinction size. As a result the relative size of extinction peaks must be viewed with regard to the taxon age structure of the population. Mass extinctions cause little change in the taxon age of the fauna. However, adaptive radiations cause a large drop in the average age of the families that are alive at any given time. Families must be treated as dynamic entities in macroevolutionary studies because their probabilities of extinction change over time.  相似文献

Dynamic and structural aspects of Thalassodendron ciliatum were studied in the intertidal zones around Inhaca Island during the rainy seasons 1991 to 1993. Measurements comprised leaf growth rate, leaf detachment rate, biomass, above-ground to below-ground biomass ratios and total rhizome length. On average, three leaves were, at the same time, formed and detached from a shoot during 15 day periods and five leaves from a shoot during 30 day periods. Mean leaf growth rate varied from 101.2 to 159.5 mm, 313.2 to 366.9 mm and 540 to 583.0 mm for 15, 30 and 45 days of measurements respectively. Differences between locations (Banco Sidzanye, Barreira Vermelha and Portinho-EBM/BV) were not statistically significant for the 30 and the 45 day period, but significant for the 15-day period. The average leaf growth rate per day was between 14.1 to 18.3 mm day-1 shoot-1, and the average time for leaf turnover (6 to 9 leaves) on one shoot was four successive spring tides (around 45 days). The average above-ground to below-ground biomass ratio was 1: 1.5 (61% in below-ground biomass) and leaf biomass varied between 45.1 and 211.7 g DW m-2. Total rhizome length varied between 960.0 to 6641.6 cm m-2. A positive correlation was observed between this variable with rhizomes and roots and between rhizomes and roots.  相似文献

Severe environmental change can drive a population extinct unless the population adapts in time to the new conditions (“evolutionary rescue”). How does biparental sexual reproduction influence the chances of population persistence compared to clonal reproduction or selfing? In this article, we set up a one‐locus two‐allele model for adaptation in diploid species, where rescue is contingent on the establishment of the mutant homozygote. Reproduction can occur by random mating, selfing, or clonally. Random mating generates and destroys the rescue mutant; selfing is efficient at generating it but at the same time depletes the heterozygote, which can lead to a low mutant frequency in the standing genetic variation. Due to these (and other) antagonistic effects, we find a nontrivial dependence of population survival on the rate of sex/selfing, which is strongly influenced by the dominance coefficient of the mutation before and after the environmental change. Importantly, since mating with the wild‐type breaks the mutant homozygote up, a slow decay of the wild‐type population size can impede rescue in randomly mating populations.  相似文献

Abstract The switch between the cell cycle and the progress of differentiation in developmental pathways is prevalent throughout the eukaryotes in all major cell lineages. Disruptions to the molecular signals regulating the switch between proliferative and differentiating states are severe, often resulting in cancer formation (uncontrolled proliferation) or major developmental disorders. Uncontrolled proliferation and developmental disorders are potentially lethal defects in the developing animal. Therefore, natural selection would likely favor a tightly controlled regulatory mechanism to help prevent these fundamental defects. Although selection is usually thought of as a consequence of environmental or ecological influences, in this case the selective force to maintain this molecular switch is internal, manifested as a potentially lethal developmental defect. The morphogenetic consequences of this prevalent, deeply embedded, and tightly controlled mechanistic switch are currently unexplored, however experimental and correlative evidence from several sources suggest that there are important consequences on the control of growth rates and developmental rates in organs and in the whole animal. These observations lead one to consider the possibility of a developmental constraint on ontogenetic rates and morphological evolution maintained by natural selection against cancer and other embryonic lethal defects.  相似文献

Filtering rates of three species of Daphnia were studied in situ by the 14C technique during the summer in a lake with a water temperature of 20-25°C (Lake Balaton, Hungary). The renewal time of gut contents proved to be 3-5 min in each of the three species whether fed on natural or artificial food. From May to September, filtering rates of D. cucullata, D. hyalina and D. galeata averaged 7.8, 10.3 and 9.2 ml ind.−1 day−1, respectively. Identically long individuals of all three species had almost the same filtering rates in spring, whereas in summer animals of identical weights had similar filtering rates regardless of species because of the length variability of the helmets. The grazing rate of adult filter-feeding crustaceans is suggested to be approximately 7 % per day.  相似文献

Records (years 2005-2007) were analyzed from a Thoroughbred stud farm in central Kentucky. Data from all breeding cycles of foaling mares were tabulated (3184 cycles of 2003 foaling mares bred between 7 and 163 days postpartum). A multiple logistic regression model employing Bayesian statistics was used to adjust for factors that significantly affected outcome; odds ratios (ORs) for pregnancy rate, pregnancy loss rate, and foaling rate were determined to examine the influence of day of postpartum breeding on these parameters. Mares bred before Day 22 (Day 0 = day of foaling) postpartum had a decreased OR for becoming pregnant (P < 0.05); the median OR for becoming pregnant (1.00) was not reached until Day 46 postpartum. Mares bred before Day 13 postpartum had an increased OR for pregnancy loss (P < 0.05). The median OR for pregnancy loss did not decline below 1.00 until Day 78 postpartum. Mares bred before Day 20 postpartum had a decreased OR for producing a foal (P < 0.05). The median OR for producing a foal (1.00) was not reached until Day 75 postpartum. We concluded that fertility (in terms of a higher OR for becoming pregnant and a lower OR for pregnancy loss, resulting in a higher OR for producing a foal) continued to improve in Thoroughbred mares for approximately 2.5 mo postpartum. These findings are of importance to management strategies directed at early postpartum breeding, and explain some of the reported drift in subsequent foaling dates of Thoroughbred mares, despite management practices that employ early postpartum breeding.  相似文献

目的:观察复合天然抗氧化剂的抗氧化性能,抗运动疲劳及抗神经细胞氧化损伤的作用。方法:①采用光照核黄素生成O.2-,采用Fenton反应生成.OH,采用脂类过氧化反应生成L.,用顺磁波谱仪记录电子自旋共振ESR波谱。②建立力竭游泳运动模型,测定各组小鼠力竭性游泳的持续时间。③用氮蓝四唑NBT法测定肝脏和骨骼肌中SOD活力。④用硫代巴比妥酸TBA荧光比色法测定肝脏和骨骼肌中MDA的生成量。⑤测定经FeSo4处理后的脑细胞存活率和凋亡率。结果:①各实验组较对照组的电子自旋共振ESR波谱峰值显著降低,复合天然抗氧化制剂对O.-2和.OH有极强的清除作用,有效抑制脂质过氧化反应。②实验组较实验对照组游泳时间显著延长(P0.01);③实验组肝脏中SOD活力显著低于空白对照组(P0.01);实验组骨骼肌中SOD活力与空白对照组无显著差异(P0.05);实验对照组肝脏、骨骼肌中SOD活力显著低于空白对照组(P0.01,P0.05);实验组肝脏、骨骼肌中SOD活力显著高于实验对照组。④实验组肝脏和骨骼肌中MDA含量显著低于实验对照组(P0.01,P0.05);实验对照组肝脏和骨骼肌中MDA含量显著高于空白对照组(P0.01)。⑤实验组的细胞存活率明显高于实验对照组;空白对照组细胞的凋亡率低于实验组,实验组细胞的凋亡率低于实验对照组。结论:复合天然抗氧化制剂具有较强的抗氧化性能、抗运动疲劳及抗神经细胞氧化损伤作用。  相似文献

Eighty-five sifakas (Propithecus verreauxi) have been captured, marked, released, and monitored between September 1984 and August 1988 at the Beza Mahafaly Special Reserve in southwest Madagascar. Estimates are presented of the age and sex structure of this population and of age-specific fertility and survival. Using data from this and other studies, it is shown that sifaka tertiary sex ratios do not depart significantly from 50:50, but that they do differ significantly from those of haplorhine primates, which have strongly female-biased tertiary sex ratios. Two demographic mechanisms that could give rise to this distinction are considered: 1) intermittently male-biased birth cohorts among sifakas and 2) different patterns of survivorship in haplorhines and sifakas.  相似文献

Adults (0.61 g, fresh-weight) of Abracris flavolineata De Geer (Orthoptera: Acrididae) feeding on Brassica oleracea acephala leaves ingest 21 mg dry-weight/day with an approximate digestibility of 42%. Chemical determinations performed on the leaves ingested and on the feces expelled led to the determination of the approximate digestibilities (%) of the major carbohydrates of leaves as follows: soluble carbohydrates, 91; pectin, 32.1; hemicellulose, 0; starch, 66; cellulose, 15. The results are not sufficient to disregard the possibility that digestible hemicellulose polymers contaminate the pectin and the cellulose fraction. Thus, it is possible that the digestibility of hemicellulose is different from zero, and that the digestibility of pectin and cellulose are somewhat lower than reported. The data are used to propose physiological roles of the enzyme activities previously found in the A. flavolineata midgut.  相似文献

We have studied the growth rate, nucleic-acid concentration, protein-accumulation rate (KG), and several other parameters relating to protein turnover, such as the protein-synthesis (KS), and protein-degradation rates (KD), protein-synthesis capacity (CS), protein-synthesis efficiency (KRNA), protein-synthesis rate per DNA unit (KDNA) and protein-retention efficiency (PRE), in the white muscle of rainbow trout during development. Both growth rate and relative food intake decreased significantly with age and weight, as did the food-efficiency ratio (FER) and protein-efficiency ratio (PER). Although absolute RNA and DNA contents increased with age, their relative concentrations decreased. The RNA/DNA ratio increased sharply from 14 to 28 weeks but afterwards decreased towards initial values. Hypertrophy increased rapidly to the 28-week stage but thenceforth increased much more slowly. Hyperplasia, on the other hand, continued to increase linearly, resulting in a significant four- to fivefold predominance in this type of growth at the end of the 96-week experimental period. KG decreased significantly with age, as did KS, and CS, whereas at the 14-week stage, KD was significantly lower than at other ages. KRNA increased until 28 weeks. KDNA increased significantly in juvenile fish compared to both fingerlings and adults, where it showed similar lower values. PRE remained high at all ages.  相似文献

Anaerobic/anoxic/aerobic systems inoculated without and with NaCl acclimated cultures, i.e., Models A and B, respectively, were fed with a synthetic wastewater at various salinity levels. After achieving a steady state, the systems were shocked with 70 g/l NaCl for four consecutive days before returning to pre-shock conditions. At the steady-state, the specific oxygen uptake rates (SOURs) increased with an increase of sodium chloride concentration (from 5.40 to 9.72 mg O2/g mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS)-h at 0–30 g/l NaCl for Model A and from 6.84 to 17.64 mg O2/g MLSS-h at 5–30 g/l NaCl for Model B). In contrast, the specific ammonia uptake rate (SAUR) and specific nitrate uptake rate (SNUR) decreased with increasing chloride concentration (from 4.76 to 2.14 mg NH3–N/g MLSS-h and 2.50 to 1.22 NO3–N/g MLSS-h, for Model A, and from 3.84 to 2.71 mg NH3–N/g MLSS-hr and 2.54 to 1.82 mg NO3–N/g MLSS-hr, for Model B). During the shocked period, the SOUR in most scenarios increased whereas the SAUR and SNUR tended to decrease. The impact of the chloride shock on nitrifiers was more obvious than on denitrifiers; however, after a certain recovery period, the activities of both nitrifiers and denitrifiers in terms of SAUR and SNUR were approximately the same as those prior to shock.  相似文献

Using two PGF treatments 14 days apart as a way to enhance estrus detection rate following the 2nd treatment is a reproductive management tool that continues to be used on large dairy farms. In one study, in cows with a functional CL and a dominant follicle, treatment with cloprostenol vs. dinoprost resulted in greater peripheral estradiol concentrations. The objective of the present study was to determine if cloprostenol could enhance pregnancy rates of cows in a large dairy herd using a PGF program for 1st artificial insemination (AI). Lactating dairy cows (n = 4549) were randomly assigned to receive two treatments of either 500 μg cloprostenol or 25 mg dinoprost 14 days apart, with the 2nd treatment on the 1st day of the voluntary waiting period (57 DIM). Cows detected in estrus within 5 days after the 2nd treatment were inseminated. There was no effect of treatment on day of estrus detection, with 78% of cows inseminated on Days 3 or 4 following treatment. Cloprostenol increased (P < 0.01) estrus detection rates in 1st parity cows compared to dinoprost, 42.4 vs. 34.0%. In cows inseminated on Days 3 or 4 after treatment, cloprostenol increased (P = 0.05) conception rates compared to dinoprost, 38.3 vs. 34.4%. When treatments and parities were combined, conception rates increased (P < 0.02) with interval after treatment (27.0, 36.4, and 44.5% for Days 1 or 2, Days 3 or 4, and Day 5, respectively). Cloprostenol increased (P = 0.02) overall pregnancy rate compared to dinoprost, 14.4 vs. 12.2%. In summary, cloprostenol increased fertility in 1st parity cows inseminated on Days 3 or 4 following treatment and subsequently enhanced pregnancy rates of 1st parity lactating dairy cows compared to dinoprost. Fertility appeared greater in cows expected to have had a young antral ovarian follicle at treatment.  相似文献

Synopsis Feeding and growth rates of 1–3 wk old herring larvae from four different stocks were compared in laboratory experiments (8°C). For most of the larval groups, feeding rate was saturated at nauplii (Acartia tonsa, nauplii stages 3–5) densities over 301–1 (5 g d.w. 1–1). Specific growth rate increased asymptotically with nauplii density, and reached about 6% d–1 at densities over 120 nauplii 1–1. The growth rates attained in the laboratory were similar to field measured growth rates of similarly aged herring larvae at comparable food densities. Since food particles were homogenously distributed in the laboratory tanks, patches of dense plankton concentrations are, thus, apparently not necessary for larval growth and survival in the sea. Growth efficiency differed between larval groups, with large sized larvae being the most efficient in transforming ingested matter into growth. The difference probably relates to different sizes rather than to the different geographical origins of the larvae.  相似文献
