Synopsis Associations of fishes in physically distinct habitats (riffles, inlets and pools) of Flint Creek were studied to evaluate critically the habitat-guild concept — the notion that fishes associate with patches of stream habitat in discrete groups. There was little evidence of significant interspecific association at the habitat level. Most fishes were very generalized in their habitat-use patterns. Faunal similarity between habitats was unrelated to physical-habitat similarity. Assemblages from physically distinct habitats were little different from those from physically similar habitats. The structure of the associations (constancy within groups of commonly occurring species) varied seasonally and from site to site. There were constant associations in pools from summer through fall and this coincided with conditions of high fish density and low food availability, suggesting that the pattern resulted from past or present interaction between species. However, the timing also coincided with recruitment of young. Pools were the favored habitats of young-of-year fishes which dominated assemblages in these areas during summer and fall months. This apparently adaptive pattern of habitat association, operating in tandem with local reproductive success could have been responsible for the constancy observed in pools. Most of the species considered here made use of a variety of habitat conditions over the course of their life histories. Individual patches of habitat satisfied the needs of few fish, and thus, seemed too small a scale for the study of community-assembly mechanisms. There was better evidence of interspecies association at the scale of two or more of these habitat areas combined.  相似文献

Summary Surveys of 262 pools in 3 small streams in eastern Tennessee demonstrated a strong positive relationship between pool depth and the size of the largest fish within a pool (P<0.001). Similarly, the largest colonizers of newly-created deep pools were larger than the colonizers of shallow pools. We explored the role of predation risk in contributing to the bigger fish — deeper habitat pattern, which has been noted by others, by conducting five manipulative field experiments in two streams. Three experiments used stoneroller minnows (Campostoma anomalum); one used creek chubs (Semotilus atromaculatus); and one used striped shiners (Notropis chrysocephalus). The stoneroller experiments showed that survival of fish approximately 100 mm in total length (TL) was much lower in shallow pools (10 cm deep) than in deep (40 cm maximum) pools (19% versus 80% survival over 12 d in one experiment) and added cover markedly increased stoneroller survival in shallow pools (from 49% to 96% in an 11-d experiment). The creek chub experiment showed that, as for stonerollers, pool depth markedly influenced survival: the chubs survived an average of 4.9 d in shallow pools and >10.8 d in deep pools. In the striped shiner experiment in shallow artificial streamside troughs, no individuals 75–100 mm TL survived as long as 13 d, where-as smaller (20–25 mm) fish had 100% survival over 13 d. The results of the experiments show that predation risk from wading/diving animals (e.g., herons and raccoons) is much higher for larger fishes in shallow water than for these fishes in deeper water or for smaller fish in shallow water. We discuss the role of predation risk from two sources (piscivorous fish, which are more effective in deeper habitats, and diving/wading predators, which are more effective in shallow habitats) in contributing to the bigger fish — deeper habitat pattern in streams.  相似文献

1. Relationships between fish and their habitat over whole geographic regions, which are evident from studies of many streams and species, can improve understanding of lotic communities and provide reliable management tools. Nevertheless, most habitat preference studies have been based on single sites, and confined to small streams and to game species.
2. Regional habitat preference models, based on local velocity, depth and roughness, were developed for twenty-four species and their size classes commonly found in large European streams. Fish surveys were conducted in six large streams in southern France over an 8-year period. To limit the influences of habitat variables other than those studied, we estimated fish preferences within each survey and averaged this information across surveys. Preferences were fitted with confidence intervals and their sensitivity to field uncertainty was evaluated.
3. Most species and size classes had significant preferences for local habitat conditions which were consistent across the region. Habitat preferences predominant in the region overall were not always observed at any one site, but habitat conditions preferred on average in the region were never actually avoided locally. These results support the use of regional preference models for fish and the development of similar models for other lotic groups whose sensitivity to local habitat conditions has been reported elsewhere.  相似文献

The habitats occupied by species of wood warblers (Emberizidae) were compared at two study areas, Itasca State Park, Minnesota and Mount Blue State Park, Maine. Univariate comparisons of each variable of habitat structure show geographic differences for each species of warbler. Habitats available were also different because small trees were always more dense in Maine than in Minnesota. The Black-throated Green Warbler had the most dissimilar habitat with 9 of 11 variables different at the two sites.Cluster analysis identified four generalized habitat groups containing (1) species occupying territories with high percent shrub cover, (2) forest species from Maine, (3) forest species from Minnesota and (4) open country species. Reciprocal averaging ordination was used to identify habitat gradients at each site. The first axis of the Maine and Minnesota ordinations was a gradient from open country with dense ground cover to forest vegetation. The second axes differed, however. In Minnesota, the gradient separated medium deciduous trees from large conifers, whereas in Maine, vegetation graded from medium and large deciduous trees to coniferous habitats. Spearman rank correlation indicated that the warblers were similarly arranged along both habitat axes at each site despite differences in axis loadings of habitat variables.A combined reciprocal averaging ordination separated forest and shrub-forest edge species in Maine from the same two species groups in Minnesota along a smaller to larger tree axis. The results clearly demonstrate that habitat structure is not consistent throughout the range of many widely distributed species. It is suggested that the similar arrangement of species along the habitat axes probably results from an individualistic distribution of opportunistic bird species. Variation is probably induced at a site level by intraspecific competition for territories, small-scale vegetation dynamics, and resource fluctuation that occurs both within and between seasons.  相似文献

This paper presents an integrated modelling approach to simulate and assess ecological effects of physical habitat changes in rivers. An ecohydraulic simulation tool was created by combining a 1D hydraulic model based on HEC-RAS software and the fish habitat module of CASiMiR, a fuzzy logic-based ecohydraulic modelling system. This tool was applied on a river stretch commonly occurring in Belgium and elsewhere in Europe. In particular the effect of weir removal on habitat suitability for bullhead (Cottus gobio L.) was simulated. Physical conditions of the studied stretch after weir removal were simulated with a hydraulic model. CASiMiR linked these conditions to ecological expert knowledge to calculate habitat suitability for three life stages of bullhead at four different flow rates based on fuzzy logic. Results indicated that after weir removal, habitat suitability increased significantly for all life stages and all flow rates. The presented approach is promising regarding fish community assessment and ecological river engineering.  相似文献

We surveyed fish distribution in three lagoons and adjacent forereefs in the British Virgin Islands recording about 28,000 fish from 40 families and 118 species. Canonical correspondence indicated that rock, sand, fleshy algae, gorgonians, mangroves and live hard coral were the most important habitat types influencing fish assemblage composition. About 47% of fishes occurring at more than 10 stations displayed evidence of ontogenetic partitioning between reefs and lagoons but post-settlement ontogenetic life history strategies were quite varied depending on the species. For example Chaetodon striatus juveniles occurred exclusively in lagoons and all sexually mature adults were found on reefs. Some differences were less pronounced as seen in Halichoeres bivittatus where individuals of all sizes occurred on reefs and lagoons, but when analysed it was found that reefs had larger individuals than lagoons. Some species, such as Acanthurus bahianus, were primarily reef species whose juveniles also used lagoon habitats while others, such as Gerres cinereus, were generally lagoon species whose adults occasionally moved onto reefs. Even with all this variation in life-history strategies, all the species that exhibited bay-reef partitioning used the lagoons as juveniles then moved onto reefs as adults and not vice versa, supporting the hypothesis that bays are important nursery areas for reef-dwelling fishes. These results show that a detailed review of the natural life-history strategies and habitat requirements are required before making further generalisations about the role of near-shore habitat types as nurseries for reef fishes. This is especially important given the rapid changes in tropical near-shore habitats around the world.  相似文献

Summary Woody debris is a major structural component of south-eastern Australian lowland streams, and the decayed wood substrates provide a structurally complex habitat for macroinvertebrate colonization. I tested for the presence of a species richness-habitat complexity relationship for macroinvertebrate species inhabiting the surfaces of decayed submerged logs (snags) in a lowland stream in northern Victoria. The species-habitat complexity relationship is defined as the increase in species richness due to increased structural complexity of a habitat when area is held constant. The response of macroinvertebrates to seven treatments of artificial and natural substrates of differing levels and types of structural complexity were examined using cluster analyses and MANOVAs. These analyses revealed a significant species-habitat complexity relationship. In addition, a comparison of species evenness between simple and complex habitats supported the hypothesis that more complex habitats contained more species because they possessed more resources. Analysis of species richness, though informative, masked the complexity of species responses revealed by multivariate analyses of species abundances. These analyses showed that different species groups selected different microhabitats on snags, particularly in response to the level of sediment deposition, which was greater on more structurally complex snags. In comparison with the benthos, snags were significantly richer in species abundances, possibly related to low levels of dissolved oxygen in benthic habitats.  相似文献

Population behaviours associated with the migrations of coarse (non‐salmonid) fishes within river basins are amongst the most poorly understood dispersion mechanisms of temperate freshwater organisms, which in rivers are expected to be influenced by river discharge. We examined the timing and intensity of fish movements (via trapping) between the River Avon (Hampshire, England) and a small floodplain tributary, Ibsley Brook, and tested for correlations with trends in river discharge (i.e. mean cm of change in stage during trapping), water temperature and brook water velocity over twelve months in 1999–2000. 0‐group fishes dominated the catches. Intensities of movement between the brook and the river were similar in most months, but seasonal patterns were observed overall and for individual species. Few significant differences in overall numbers of fish were observed between the discharge trends, but many individual species demonstrated differences, mostly as more intense movement under fast rising discharge. Fish numbers in five species were correlated with river discharge trend, and movements in some species were correlated with the rate of temperature change (Δ° C 10 h sampling), and with changes in brook water velocity. Our results suggest daily movements between the river and small tributary brooks are triggered by changes in light intensity and water velocity, whereas seasonal movements of species between the river and brook are driven by changes in river discharge and water temperature, in particular associated with flood events. This study emphasizes the importance of connectivity in river systems, as fish movement between the Avon and its annexes occur under all flow regimes, but especially with rapidly rising discharge.  相似文献

Mature forests have structural habitat features that can take hundreds of years to develop, and large reserves alone are unlikely to ensure conservation of the species that rely on these features. This paper outlines a proposed new approach to managing mature forest features, the ‘mature habitat management approach’, in areas outside of reserves. The objective was to maintain a network of current and future mature forest habitat distributed across the landscape. The approach is designed to complement the existing reserve network and management actions and is tenure‐blind. Spatial information on the availability of mature forest habitat at the local (1‐km radius) and landscape (5‐km radius) scales is used for decisions on retention within a 1‐km radius of a harvest area, to reach the minimum target of 20% and 30% retention of mature forest at the local and landscape spatial scales, respectively. We believe this approach could contribute to meeting the conservation needs of many species that require mature forest features for refuge and breeding in Tasmania and elsewhere.  相似文献

The recovery of benthic macroinvertebrates after disturbance from stream rehabilitation was studied in the River Livojoki, northern Finland. The stream that had been channelized for log transport was rehabilitated on 1 July 1992 by digging holes and inserting boulders. We measured habitat characteristics and sampled benthic animals before and after rehabilitation, including an unrehabilitated control site. The immediate effect of rehabilitation was a slight decrease in the abundances of benthic insects. Recolonization occurred rapidly, within 10 days. Disturbance of the rehabilitation did not have a detectable effect on the macroinvertebrate community. Most species-level changes and community patterns reflected seasonal life history events. Timing of such rehabilitation work can be critical for the recovery rate, which depends on the colonization abilities of the species present after disturbance. We suggest that many disturbances (including minor floods and moderate rehabilitation procedures) may have only small, short-term effects on benthic communities. We emphasize the importance of considering seasonality in studies of disturbance in streams.  相似文献

Many saproxylic species are threatened in Europe because of habitat decline. Hollow trees represent an important habitat for saproxylic species. Artificial habitats may need to be created to maintain or increase the amount of habitat due to natural habitat decline. This study investigated the extent to which saproxylic beetles use artificial habitats in wooden boxes. The boxes were placed at various distances (0–1800 m) from known biodiversity hotspots with hollow oaks and studied over 10 years. Boxes were mainly filled with oak saw dust, oak leaves, hay and lucerne flour. In total, 2170 specimens of 91 saproxylic beetle species were sampled in 43 boxes. The abundance of species associated with tree hollows, wood rot and animal nests increased from the fourth to the final year, but species richness declined for all groups. This study shows that wooden boxes can function as saproxylic species habitats. The artificial habitats developed into a more hollow-like environment during the decade long experiment with fewer but more abundant tree hollow specialists.  相似文献

The survival of insects during diapause may be affected by overwintering temperature and other environmental stress, such as anthropogenic habitat degradation. We experimentally studied the effects of overwintering temperature (+1 and +7°C) and commercial forest clear-cutting on the overwintering survival of the forest-dwelling wood ant Formica aquilonia. We found that both the higher overwintering temperature and clear-cutting lowered the overwintering survival and body fat resources of Formica aquilonia. The survival and body fat resources were highest in lower temperature treatment forest nests and lowest in higher temperature treatment clear-cut nests. The overall survival of ants increased with higher body fat resources. It is possible that both forest clear-cutting and higher winter temperature due to possible climate warming may increase the wintertime mortality of wood ants and other forest-dwelling ants.  相似文献

Branching corals, like many in the genus Acropora, provide structurally complex habitats for reef fishes and other organisms. Fluctuations in the abundance, distribution and characteristics of thicket-forming staghorn Acroporids may contribute to changes in the abundance and species composition of reef fishes due to changes in the availability of shelter habitat and food. Farming damselfishes of the genus Stegastes can occur in high abundances in staghorn corals and actively defend food and nest space against organisms that threaten these resources. Here we assess the value of staghorn as habitat for fishes in the central South Pacific, and how the presence of territorial farming damselfishes may influence the assemblage of fishes that associate with staghorn corals. Surveys of 185 Acropora pulchra patches located in the lagoons surrounding the island of Moorea, French Polynesia revealed 85 species of fish from 25 families. Total fish abundance and species richness values ranged from no fish on a patch to a high of 275 individuals and 26 species. Patch area was the most important characteristic in explaining variation in attributes of the fish assemblage, with other characteristics explaining little of the species composition or trophic structure. Behavioral observations revealed that farming damselfishes were most aggressive toward corallivores, herbivores, and egg predators, while they ignored most carnivores and omnivores. Despite this pattern, we observed positive covariance between Stegastes and the group of fishes that elicited the strongest aggressive response when the effect of patch area was removed, suggesting these fishes remain drawn to the resources produced or enhanced by Stegastes on A. pulchra.  相似文献

This study describes seasonal changes in the diet of a population of wood mice inhabiting a maritime sand dune system. Invertebrates, particularly coleopterans, formed the bulk of the diet throughout the year. The relationships between habitat variables and population densities of masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou), rosyface dace (Leuciscus ezoe), Siberian stone loach (Noemacheilus barbatulus) and wrinklehead sculpin (Cottus nozawae) were examined by data collected at 55 reaches in forest and grassland streams in northern Hokkaido, Japan. Regression analysis suggested that salmon and dace densities were affected by water temperature (negative for salmon, positive for dace) and structural habitat factors (woody debris for salmon, pools for dace). Salmon density was higher in forest reaches than in grassland reaches, whereas dace density was higher in grassland reaches, suggesting that the removal of riparian forest had raised water temperature and allowed upstream invasions by dace. In contrast to salmon and dace, neither the density of loach nor sculpin differed between the forest and grassland reaches. For their densities, a negative effect of each on the other was most important, suggesting a strong effect of interspecific competition between loach and sculpin on their distributions. However, regression models also suggested that substrate heterogeneity mediated the outcome of their interspecific competition. On the basis of the results, a scenario is predicted for a fish-assemblage change with a typical land-development process in Hokkaido, and the importance of leaving or restoring riparian buffer for conservation and restoration of stream habitat is emphasized.  相似文献

Forested headwater streams play an important role in watershed nutrient dynamics, and wood is thought to be a key factor influencing habitat structure and nitrate-nitrogen dynamics in many forested streams. Because wood in streams can promote nitrogen uptake through denitrification, we hypothesized that nitrate uptake velocities would decrease following wood removal. We measured stream characteristics and nitrate uptake velocities before and after wood manipulation experiments conducted at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, NH, and the Sleepers River watershed, VT. The mean size of stream substrates and the amount of riffle habitat increased following wood removal. In contrast to our expectations, summer nitrate uptake velocities increased in the wood removal treatments relative to the reference treatments, possibly because wood removal increased the availability of stable substrates for periphyton growth, therefore increasing nitrate demand in these streams. Our results highlight that effects of wood on stream ecosystems occur through multiple pathways and suggest that the relative importance of these pathways may vary seasonally.  相似文献
