Aggression is a quantitative trait deeply entwined with individual fitness. Mapping the genomic architecture underlying such traits is complicated by complex inheritance patterns, social structure, pedigree information and gene pleiotropy. Here, we leveraged the pedigree of a reintroduced population of grey wolves (Canis lupus) in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA, to examine the heritability of and the genetic variation associated with aggression. Since their reintroduction, many ecological and behavioural aspects have been documented, providing unmatched records of aggressive behaviour across multiple generations of a wild population of wolves. Using a linear mixed model, a robust genetic relationship matrix, 12,288 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and 111 wolves, we estimated the SNP‐based heritability of aggression to be 37% and an additional 14% of the phenotypic variation explained by shared environmental exposures. We identified 598 SNP genotypes from 425 grey wolves to resolve a consensus pedigree that was included in a heritability analysis of 141 individuals with SNP genotype, metadata and aggression data. The pedigree‐based heritability estimate for aggression is 14%, and an additional 16% of the phenotypic variation was explained by shared environmental exposures. We find strong effects of breeding status and relative pack size on aggression. Through an integrative approach, these results provide a framework for understanding the genetic architecture of a complex trait that influences individual fitness, with linkages to reproduction, in a social carnivore. Along with a few other studies, we show here the incredible utility of a pedigreed natural population for dissecting a complex, fitness‐related behavioural trait.  相似文献

The known African cases of blastomycosis to 1987 are presented, including thirteen previously undescribed cases. This brings to 81 the total number of cases known to have occurred in Africa. The question of whether the disease in Africa is the same in all respects as that in North America is addressed; the age and sex distributions of patients are similar. Minor differences in the clinical features relate particularly to the type of skin lesion, the more frequent bone involvement and the less frequent central nervous system involvement in the African patient. Little is known about the epidemiology of blastomycosis in Africa; one noteworthy feature is the apparent absence of the disease in dogs. Isolates of Blastomyces dermatitidis from the two continents, although closely related, differ in some respects.  相似文献

In many species of canids the male's role in reproduction extends to providing extensive or some parental care to his offspring. Maned wolves are a monogamous canid species whose males have been observed providing parental care to their offspring in captivity, but no field observations exist. We observed a wild pair of maned wolves at their nest site in a period soon after the female had given birth for a total period of 65 days. We made five observation sessions with an average of 3–4 days each separated by approximately 2 weeks. Direct visual observations of maned wolves were made each 30 min during the hours of darkness (17:00–07:00) using night-vision binoculars and confirmed by VHF radiotelemetry. During observations we recorded the location of the male and the female in relation to the nest (i.e., in the nest, nearby or long way from the nest). The results showed that the female spent more than 60.44% of her time in or near the nest. The male spent 28.90% of his time in or near the nest. There was a positive significant correlation between the female and the male in terms of the amount of time spent in or near the nest (P<0.01). The maned wolves showed a strong temporal variation in time spent in or near the nest. In conclusion, our data show that wild male maned wolves—probably—provide parental care through provision of food to their female and presumed offspring rather than “babysitting.” Zoo Biol 28:69–74, 2009. © 2008 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Predators play integral roles in shaping ecosystems through cascading effects to prey and vegetation. Such effects occur when prey species alter their behavior to avoid predators, a phenomenon called the risk effects of predators. Risk effects of wild predators such as wolves are well documented for wild prey, but not for free ranging domestic animals such as cattle despite their importance for ecosystem function and conservation. We compared risk effects of satellite‐collared wolves (n = 16) on habitat selection by global‐positioning‐system‐collared elk (n = 10) and cattle (n = 31). We calculated resource selection functions (RSFs) in periods before, during and after wolf visits in elk home ranges or cattle pastures. The habitat variables tested included: distance to roads and trails, terrain ruggedness, food‐quality and distance to forest. When wolves were present, elk stayed closer to forest cover and selected less for high‐quality‐food habitat. Thus, the risk effects of wolf presence on elk produced a change in the tradeoff between food and cover selection. Cattle responded by avoiding high‐quality‐food habitat and selecting areas closer to roads and trails (where people likely provided security), but these effects manifested only after wolves had left. Artificial selection in cattle may have attenuated natural anti‐predator behaviors. The effects of predators on ecosystems are likely different when mediated through risk effects on domestic compared to wild animals. Furthermore, predator control in response to livestock predation, an important conservation issue, may produce broad ecosystem effects triggered by decrease of an important predator species. Conservation planners should consider these effects where domestic herbivores are dominant species in the ecosystem.  相似文献

In spite of the importance of feces in scent marking and intraspecific chemical communication of many mammals, only a few studies have examined the chemical constituents of feces that could have a signaling function. We described here the chemicals found in feces recently deposited in the wild by adult and pup Iberian wolves (Canis lupus signatus). By means of analyses using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), we identified 77 compounds in feces of adult wolves, mainly heterocyclic aromatic organic compounds, such as indole or phenol, but also steroids, such as cholesterol, carboxylic acids and their esters between n-C3 and n-C18, aldehydes, alcohols and significant quantities of squalene and α-tocopherol, which would increase the chemical stability of feces on humid substrates. Some of the odoriferous compounds are very likely originated in the anal-sac secretions, and later incorporated onto feces during defecation. However, the abundance of the main odoriferous compounds in feces could be explained by the result of the bacterial action on food components. Feces of pups only had 26 compounds, most of these were also found in adults’ feces, but four compounds were only found in pups’ feces, and there were also age-related differences respect to the proportions of shared chemicals. These differences could be partly due to the absence of anal-sac glands in pups, which would not need to scent mark substrates.  相似文献

Blastomycosis, disease caused by the thermally dimorphic fungus Blastomyces dermatitidis, occurs predominantly in the Midwest, south central, and northeastern United States. Spores from the environment are inhaled into the lungs where they may cause subclinical infection, acute or chronic pneumonia, or disseminated disease. The Infectious Diseases Society of America has recently published updated guidelines on the management of blastomycosis. Antifungal therapies that have proven effective for blastomycosis include itraconazole and amphotericin B. The lipid formulations of amphotericin B are preferred owing to reduced nephrotoxicity, especially when prolonged intravenous therapy is necessary. The more recently approved triazole voriconazole may play a greater role in treating blastomycosis, especially central nervous system disease, as more clinical data become available.  相似文献

During two studies that investigated the responses of wolf packs to either human simulations or pre-recorded playbacks of wolf, Canis lupus, howling, single adult wolves from five different packs approached my location and howled on a total of six occasions. The howls uttered by these close-approaching wolves were significnatly deeper in pitch than comparable samples of howls recorded from animals that did not approach. In addition, howls of two of the five animals differed in structure from most of the other howls recorded during both studies. These close-approach howls were characterized by the presence of harmonically unrelated frequency sidebands near the end of the howl. This feature was rate in howls recorded during occasions when wolves kept their distance. These results indicate that the structure of wolf howling during aggressive interactions with strange wolves follows Morton's (1977) motivation-structural rules, which state that natural selection will favour the use of low-frequency, harsh sounds by hostile animals. This relationship follows from the physical constraints of vocal production: animals of larger size can produce sounds of lower pitch and harsher tonal quality. As body size is a primary determinant in the outcome of aggressive interactions, vocalizations signalling size (i.e.low-pitched, harsh sounds) will be of selective value for individuals engaged in aggressive interactions.  相似文献

Disseminated blastomycosis with extensive involvement of the lungs, skin and bones was diagnosed in a 31-year-old woman who was 36 weeks pregnant. No antifungal treatment had been given while she was pregnant, and she gave birth shortly after admission to hospital. The child was healthy and uninfected, and there were no signs of inflammation or infection in the placenta. Post partum the mother was treated with 2 g of amphotericin B, with resolution of her symptoms. A literature review suggested that blastomycosis and other systemic fungal infections are more likely to occur during pregnancy because of immunosuppression and that disseminated blastomycosis in pregnant women should be treated with amphotericin B.  相似文献

Blastomyces dermatitidis, a dimorphic fungus endemic to the Midwestern, South Central and Northeastern United States, causes the disease blastomycosis. Aerosolized spores from the environment are inhaled into the lungs where primary infection may be asymptomatic or subclinical. Pneumonia, the most common presentation of symptomatic blastomycosis, can be acute, subacute or chronic. Cutaneous, osteoarticular, genitourinary or central nervous system involvement may result from extra-pulmonary dissemination. The Infectious Diseases Society of America has published treatment guidelines for blastomycosis Chapman (Clin Infect Dis 46:1801-1812, 2008). Oral itraconazole has been the mainstay of therapy for mild to moderate infection, while amphotericin B, or alternatively a lipid formulation, is reserved for more severe infection. Newer triazoles, such as voriconazole and posaconazole, have shown clinical potential and expand available treatment options.  相似文献

Adrenal glucocorticoid (GC) secretion is an important component of the response to stress in vertebrates. A short-term increase in circulating GCs serves to redirect energy from processes that can be briefly curtailed without harm, allowing energy to be directed towards eliminating or avoiding the stressor. In contrast, prolonged elevation of GCs can cause a broad range of pathologies, including reproductive suppression. We examined whether social subordination in wolves leads to chronically elevated GC levels, and whether this ‘social stress’ causes reproductive suppression of subordinates in cooperatively breeding species. Behavioural and endocrine data collected over 2 years from three packs of free-living wolves in Yellowstone National Park did not support this hypothesis. GC levels were significantly higher in dominant wolves than in subordinates, for both sexes, in all packs, in both years of study. Unlike other cooperatively breeding carnivores (e.g. dwarf mongooses, Helogale parvula, and African wild dogs, Lycaon pictus), high GCs in dominant wolves were not associated with high rates of aggression or agonistic interaction. Aggression increased for wolves of all ranks during mating periods, accompanied by a significant rise in GC levels. If chronic elevation of GCs carries fitness costs, then social stress in wolves (and many other social species) is a cost of dominance, not a consequence of subordination. The specific behavioural correlates of dominance that affect GC levels appear to vary among species, even those with similar social systems.  相似文献

It is well established that ageing handicaps the ability of prey to escape predators, yet surprisingly little is known about how ageing affects the ability of predators to catch prey. Research into long-lived predators has assumed that adults have uniform impacts on prey regardless of age. Here we use longitudinal data from repeated observations of individually-known wolves ( Canis lupus ) hunting elk ( Cervus elaphus ) in Yellowstone National Park to demonstrate that adult predatory performance declines with age and that an increasing ratio of senescent individuals in the wolf population depresses the rate of prey offtake. Because this ratio fluctuates independently of population size, predatory senescence may cause wolf populations of equal size but different age structure to have different impacts on prey populations. These findings suggest that predatory senescence is an important, though overlooked, factor affecting predator-prey dynamics.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to describe the microbial communities in the distal gut of wild wolves (Canis lupus). Fecal samples were collected from three healthy unrelated adult wolves captured at the nearby of Dalai Lake Nature Reserve in Inner Mongolia of China. The diversity of fecal bacteria was investigated by constructing PCR-amplified 16S rRNA gene clone libraries using the universal bacterial primers 27 F and 1493 R. A total of 307 non-chimeric near-full-length 16S rRNA gene sequences were analyzed and 65 non-redundant bacteria phylotypes (operational taxonomical units, OTUs) were identified. Seventeen OTUs (26%) showed less than 98% sequence similarity to 16S rRNA gene sequences were reported previously. Five different bacterial phyla were identified, with the majority of OTUs being classified within the phylum Firmicutes (60%), followed by Bacteroidetes (16.9%), Proteobacteria (9.2%), Fusobacteria (9.2%) and Actinobacteria (4.6%). The majority of clones fell within the order Clostridiales (53.8% of OTUs). It was predominantly affiliated with five families: Lachnospiraceae was the most diverse bacterial family in this order, followed by Ruminococcaceae, Clostridiaceae, Peptococcaceae and Peptostreptococcaceae.  相似文献

A specific immunodiffusion test for blastomycosis has been developed. The test permitted the detection of approximately 80% of 113 proven cases of blastomycosis. Two diagnostically important precipitins designated A and B were frequently recognized in patients with blastomycosis. Routine use of reference sera containing the A and B precipitins in immunodiffusion tests would permit the specific diagnosis of blastomycosis without the need for parallel tests with coccidioidin and histoplasmin.  相似文献
