The addition of a small quantity of a dust containing pentachloronitrobenzene to clamps of certain early and second-early potato varieties has a marked effect in reducing the amount of sprouting which takes place over winter and in protecting the sprouts from damage by the fungus Rhizoctonia Solani.
A series of yield trials carried out over six seasons has shown that tubers which have been stored in clamps in presence of the dust give yields equal to those of chitted tubers.
A dust containing a tetrachloronitrobenzene applied to potatoes kept in a closed space represses sprouting to a very pronounced degree. The possible use of this dust for conserving ware potatoes is suggested.  相似文献

Black scurf and stem canker of the potato were investigated in field trials in contaminated soil at Warburton, Cheshire, to determine the effect of planting clean and contaminated seed (vars. Arran Banner and Majestic) on crop yield and on the contamination of the crop tubers.
Black-scurf contamination was prevalent on crops grown from clean seed and was not significantly different from that occurring on plots planted with contaminated seed. It was severe on early-dug tubers, but was more severe on late-dug tubers. Produce grown with and without stable manure was heavily contaminated.
Contaminated seed caused a check to tuber formation and an appreciable increase in stem canker and in the number of primary shoots killed. Nevertheless, the yields from the manured, contaminated seed plots were satisfactory and were not lower than those from the clean-seed plots. There was no relation between the yield and the amount of black scurf on the produce.
The results of a trial made in a field which had been in grass for at least 43 years, suggested that the soil contained little, if any, Corticium Solani. Heavy contamination occurred on tubers grown under relatively dry soil conditions.
In all the trials misses and wilted shoots caused by Corticium were rare and there was no premature yellowing or death of the haulms on the clean or contaminated seed plots.
The evidence obtained in the four seasons from 1941 to 1944 indicates that in this country satisfactory yields of early maincrop and maincrop varieties may be obtained despite the prevalence of C. Solani in the soil and on the seed, provided the soil and cultural conditions are reasonably good.  相似文献

Benomyl and thiabendazole, applied as dusts to seed potatoes before chitting (sprouting), reduced the incidence of silver scurf disease on the progeny at lifting and during subsequent storage. Treatment of seed tubers 4 months prior to planting almost completely suppressed sporulation during storage, even under conditions very favourable for the growth of the fungus. The fungicides appeared not to act systemically because developing tubers grown from treated seed were just as susceptible to infection after inoculation as those from untreated. Control was due to effective inhibition of sporulation on the surface of diseased seed tubers after planting. There was no reduction in the amount of disease in subsequent generations of potato crops without further fungicidal treatment. Seed virtually free from silver scurf, produced from seed treated with fungicide in the previous year, yielded progeny with as much disease as progeny from untreated seed stocks.  相似文献

Potato is a globally important crop. Unfortunately, potato farming is plagued with problems associated with the sprouting behavior of seed tubers. The data presented here demonstrate that using transgenic technology can influence this behavior. Transgenic tubers cytosolically expressing an inorganic pyrophosphatase gene derived from Escherichia coli under the control of the tuber-specific patatin promoter display significantly accelerated sprouting. The period of presprouting dormancy for transgenic tubers planted immediately after harvest is reduced by six to seven weeks when compared to wild-type tubers. This study demonstrates a method with which to regulate dormancy, an important aspect of potato crop management.  相似文献

Seed tubers with severe (71% cover) or slight (12% cover) common scab selected from a badly infected crop of cv. Maris Piper were boxed for sprouting in November and February and planted in field experiments at Woburn and Rothamsted in 1980. The severely scabbed seed lost more moisture than the slightly scabbed seed during sprouting and sprouted from a larger number of eyes but total stem numbers were greater on plants from the slightly scabbed seed. Plant growth during the first 6–9 wk after planting was less from the severely scabbed than from the slightly scabbed seed. This was shown by records of ground cover, leaf area index, fresh weights of stems and leaves, total tuber yield (18% lower at 9 wk) and tuber number. Subsequently these differences became non-significant. Seed with slight scab boxed in November produced smaller numbers of progeny tubers than that boxed in February but there were no other consistent effects of boxing date on growth and yield. Scab incidence on progeny tubers was very slight and unrelated to the severity of disease on the seed tubers. It seems unlikely that severe scab infection of seed tubers would significantly decrease tuber yields except perhaps in early potato production.  相似文献

The incidence of Phoma exigua var. foveata and Polyscytalum pustulans in dry soil and dust from potato stores was assessed at 10 farms in Scotland producing virus-tested stocks of seed potatoes derived from stem cuttings (VTSC). Samples were collected on three occasions during 1976: during the storage period (February-March), soon after the potatoes were planted (May) and just before the new crop was lifted and stored (August-October). Both pathogens were detected at all three sampling times but P. exigua var. foveata was more frequently detected at the last one than P. pustulans. Soil and dust from various sites within the stores, such as floors, ledges, graders and boxes, were contaminated by these pathogens. Propagules of both pathogens remained airborne for at least 12–17 min after the floors were swept. P. exigua var. foveata remained viable for at least 16 months in dry soil from tuber surfaces stored at 4–6°C. When VTSC tubers were dusted before planting with a dry store soil contaminated by P. exigua var. foveata the gangrene potential of the progeny tubers was much greater than that from untreated tubers or from tubers treated with an uncontaminated soil. The role of inoculum surviving in dry soil is discussed in relation to reinfection of VTSC stocks.  相似文献

In 3 years, seed tubers of cv. King Edward were planted in field experiments and diseases assessed on the daughter tubers after storage for 24–26 wk. In 1991 and 1992, the seed tubers were treated with a mixture of thiabendazole and imazalil at two rates. Tubers were harvested on several dates from late August to early October and dried under different conditions before storage. In 1990, silver scurf after storage was decreased equally by dry curing for 2 wk and windrowing for 2 h whereas skin spot was decreased most by dry curing, and these effects were greater the earlier tubers were harvested. In 1991, dry curing for 2 wk decreased skin spot and silver scurf more than dry curing for 1 wk, and skin spot was slightly decreased by windrowing for 2 h; windrowing improved the control of both diseases when tubers were subsequently dry cured. In 1991 and 1992 fungicide treatment of seed tubers greatly decreased skin spot after storage and was also effective against silver scurf, but increased black dot when tubers were harvested in September or October. Skin spot was controlled equally well by the two rates of fungicide but silver scurf was less well controlled when the dose was decreased by 75%. It is suggested that amounts of fungicide applied to seed tubers could be decreased provided that the efficiency of application is improved and that crops are harvested early and dried before storage.  相似文献

In 3 years, seed tubers were treated or not with imazalil in March or April, sprouted and planted in field experiments. Tubers were harvested on several dates and cured under different conditions for 2 wk, or not cured, before storage for 6 months. In some years effects of irrigation, seed tuber size and seed stock were tested. Fungicide seed treatment decreased silver scurf, and was most effective in 1989 when the seed had little infection and the season was dry, but the treatment increased black dot. Silver scurf and black dot were decreased by harvesting early and also by drying tubers before storage (dry curing), and these practices also sometimes decreased black scurf and skin spot. The effects of fungicide seed treatment and of dry curing were greater the earlier the tubers were harvested. Irrigation decreased silver scurf and in one year decreased black scurf but greatly increased black dot. Silver scurf, black dot and skin spot were more common on tubers from large than small seed whereas black scurf was most common on tubers from small seed. In 2 years tubers were affected with a brown superficial blemish (golding blotch). This developed on the undersides of tubers in soil and was decreased by irrigation. Its cause is not known.  相似文献

In experiments on skin-spot disease of potatoes, caused by Oospora pustulans Owen & Wakef., Kerr's Pink proved the most susceptible of twenty-four commercial varieties; Arran Banner, Majestic and King Edward were highly susceptible; Home Guard and Golden Wonder were highly resistant.
Thymol and tetrachlornitrobenzene, applied as dusts to pits of potatoes at lifting, did not give satisfactory control of the disease. The efficacy of an organo-mercury dip treatment at lifting time was confirmed.
The incidence of the disease was considerably decreased by storing tubers in boxes instead of in pits, by digging the crop about a month before normal harvest, or by cutting the haulms at this time and digging at the normal time.
Ware tubers showed a significantly higher infection than seed tubers of the same crop, indicating that susceptibility of tubers increases towards maturity.
The difference in eye infection between varieties may not be related to that of general superficial infection. It is suggested that, in future, the assessment of varietal susceptibility should be based upon the degree of eye infection, which is in practice the measure of the economic importance of the disease. Tubers having pustules at or near all the eyes gave markedly reduced sprout emergence and plant stand.  相似文献

To determine the function of cytosolic phosphorylase (Pho2; EC 2.4.1.1), transgenic potato plants were created in which the expression of the enzyme was inhibited by introducing a chimeric gene containing part of the coding region for cytosolic phosphorylase linked in antisense orientation to the 35S CaMV promotor. As revealed by Northern blot analysis and native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, the expression of cytosolic phosphorylase was strongly inhibited in both leaves and tubers of the transgenic plants. The transgenic plants propagated from stem cuttings were morphologically indiscernible from the wild-type. However, sprouting of the transgenic potato tubers was significantly altered: compared with the wild-type, transgenic tubers produced 2.4 to 8.1 times more sprouts. When cultivated in the greenhouse, transgenic seed tubers produced two to three times more shoots than the wild-type. Inflorescences appeared earlier in the resulting plants. Many of the transgenic plants flowered two or three times successively. Transgenic plants derived from seed tubers formed 1.6 to 2.4 times as many tubers per plant as untransformed controls. The size and dry matter content of the individual tubers was not noticeably altered. Tuber yield was significantly higher in the transgenic plants. As revealed by carbohydrate determination of freshly harvested and stored tubers, starch and sucrose pools were not noticeably affected by the antisense inhibition of cytosolic phosphorylase; however, glucose and fructose levels were markedly reduced after prolonged storage. These results favour the view that cytosolic phosphorylase does not participate in starch degradation. The possible links between the reduced levels of cytosolic phosphorylase and the observed changes with respect to sprouting and flowering are discussed.  相似文献

Attempts were made to extend the storage life of seed potatoes by treating them with trace elements as antimicrobial and antisprouting agents. In tests to measure the growth of Fusarium oxysporum, and Erwinia carotovora pv. carotovora it was found to be decreased more by iron, copper and zinc than by boron, manganese and molybdenum. Dipping seed tubers in aqueous solutions of trace element salts decreased both sprouting and microbial spoilage during storage at ambient conditions. Field testing at the end of storage proved that treating seed potatoes with ferrous sulphate did not decrease the yield of tubers or increase their iron content. It is suggested that trace elements may be used to extend the storage life of seed potato tubers, in tropical conditions.  相似文献

Underground stems and roots of the potato varieties King Edward and Majestic became more severely infected by Oospora pustulans (skin spot) as the growing season advanced. Tubers became infected at their initiation in June and July but the proportion of infected eyes usually increased during both the growth of the crop and bulk storage. Some buds on tubers in bulk stores died in December, but few were killed until after January, when attacks increased until by March about a quarter of Majestic eyes were usually dead. Boxing (chitting) not only prevented most eyes from dying but also prevented much skin spotting on tubers. At High Mowthorpe, Majestic seed unboxed or boxed in March yielded, respectively, 3 and 1 ton/acre less than seed boxed by January. Early boxing increased the yield of seed–sized tubers but did not affect the infection of progeny tubers. Dipping Majestic seed tubers in organo–mercurial fungicide and then boxing soon after lifting decreased their infection by O. pustulans; it also lessened infection on plants they produced and increased the yield of progeny seed–sized tubers. However, dipping, even in successive years, had little effect on the infection of progeny tubers by O. pustulans. Rhizoctonia solani and Helminihosporum atrovirens became increasingly prevalent on tubers during growth after July and during bulk storage. H. atrovirens was decreased by early boxing or dipping tubers in fungicide. Verticillate conidiophores often grew on incubated tuber plugs but their prevalence was affected by past storage. The results suggest that some of the benefit for chitting may be from disease control, it was not possible to measure the extent to which benefits from chitting depend on effects on disease or on the physiology of the tuber.  相似文献

In 1 out of 2 years' field trials benomyl applied as a dust treatment at time of planting seed potatoes resulted in an increase in potato gangrene in the progeny of both gangrene-free tubers planted in land contaminated with Phoma exigua var. foveata and gangrene-diseased tubers planted in clean land. Gangrene-infected seed tubers treated with benomyl also produced more stems infected with var. foveata than untreated tubers. Two hypotheses are presented to account for this increase in gangrene which does not occur in seed potatoes treated shortly after lifting. In all cultivars tested an organo-mercury dip-treatment increased total numbers of tubers in the seed and chat-size grades without increasing total weight whereas benomyl dust increased the numbers in these grades in Majestic only. The treatment of gangrene-diseased seed with benomyl dust affected neither total weight nor total number of tubers.  相似文献

THE USE OF TETRACHLORONITROBENZENE ISOMERS ON POTATOES   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In laboratory and field experiments from 1952 to 1955, 2:3:5:6-tetrachloro-I-nitrobenzene (tecnazene) delayed the development of sprouts on treated potato tubers, and 2:3:4:6-TCNB retarded sprout development in two laboratory experiments. At the usual commercial rates of application the 2:3:4:5 isomer had no effect on sprout development and very little effect at higher rates. The crop from 2:3:5:6-TCNB-treated seed tubers usually contained a higher proportion of small tubers than that from untreated or 2:3:4:5-TCNB-treated seed. Marketable yield from 2:3:5:6-TCNB-treated seed was sometimes below that from untreated seed, but when this happened the yield from 2:3:4:5-TCNB-treated seed was higher.
Both isomers produced good control of dry rot, Fusarium caeruleum (Lib.) Sacc., on five varieties of potatoes, but did not produce a commercial control on Doon Star. To achieve control, the isomers had to be present at the time of infection. There was some evidence that the development of disease symptoms was delayed in treated, infected tubers. Since 2:3:4:5-tetrachloro-1-nitrobenzene has no sprout depressant action it merits further trial as a fungicidal treatment for seed potatoes.  相似文献

Potato seed tubers cv. Maris Peer obtained from a number of sources in England and Scotland were graded into a range of weights and after storage for approximately 3 or 7 months in 1971 or 3 months in 1972 they were planted to determine the effect of seed source on early foliage growth. In both years there were large differences between seed sources on the effect of seed tuber weight on the dry weight of foliage produced in a glasshouse from seed stored for 3 months. In some instances small seed from one source produced the same weight of foliage as large seed from another source. In 1971 after seed storage for 7 months there was no effect of source on foliage dry weight produced in the field. There was, however, no consistent effect of the site of production of the parent seed, of fertilizer treatments of the seed crop, or of N content of the seed tubers. Seed tuber N content increased, though not proportionally, with an increase in seed weight. It was unaffected by source except for seed tubers from one site m 1972.  相似文献

Tiger nut (Cyperus esculentum) is a very profitable crop in Valencia, Spain, but in the last years, part of the harvested tubers presents black spots in the skin making them unmarketable. Surveys performed in two consecutive years showed that about 10% of the tubers were severely affected by the black spot syndrome whose aetiology is unknown. Disease control procedures based on selection of tubers used as seed (seed tubers) or treatment with hot‐water and/or chemicals were assayed in greenhouse. These assays showed that that this syndrome had a negative impact on the germination rate, tuber size and yield. Selection of asymptomatic seed tubers reduced drastically the incidence of the black spot syndrome with respect to using seed tubers with severe symptoms (selection of healthy seed tubers was not possible because the causal agent is undetermined). Thermal treatment of seed tubers with severe symptoms reduced the number of unmarketable harvested tubers by half but was detrimental for the germination. Chemical treatments of seed tubers with severe symptoms decreased the incidence of the black spot syndrome about 40% for sodium hypochlorite and about 10% for hydrochloric acid, trisodium phosphate and the fungicide trioxystrobin.  相似文献

Inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi) is an enzyme involved in sugar metabolism in potato tubers. In our previous study, we isolated an inorganic pyrophosphatase (PPase) gene from potato and obtained the transgenic potato plants transformed with the sense and antisense PPase genes respectively. In the present experiment, the physiological indexes, tuber dormancy, and sprouting characteristics of the transgenic potatoes were analyzed and evaluated. The result showed that the PPase activity and the inorganic phosphate content of tubers were lower in the antisense transgenic plant lines but were higher in the sense transgenic plant lines, compared with wild-type tubers. Soluble sugars, such as glucose, fructose and sucrose increased in transgenic plants that had overexpression of the sense PPase gene, but decreased in the antisense transgenic plant lines, compared with wild-type tubers. Tuber sprouting time of the antisense transgenic plants were delayed for 2 and 3 weeks and reached the 100 % sprouting rate only after 14 and 16 weeks storage compared with the wild-type when tubers are stored under 25 and 4 °C, respectively. In contrast, tuber sprouting time of the sense transgenic plants was earlier by approximately 2 weeks than that of wild-type tubers under these storage temperatures.  相似文献

Nature of enhanced respiration during sprouting of aged potato seed-tubers   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Respiration of 18-month-old Solarium tuberosum L. tubers was about 53% greater than that of 6-month-old tubers during sprouting at 23°C; yet, a significant loss of sprout vigor in the older tubers was apparent. Involvement of alternative oxidase (AO) in the age-induced difference in tuber respiration was assessed. AO was only detected in immunoblots if tissue disks from tubers were pre-incubated for 24 h prior to isolation of submitochondrial membrane particles (SMPs). No AO1 was detected in SMPs from nonincubated tuber tissue of either age, indicating that it was not contributing to tuber respiration during sprouting as previously thought. Respiratory control and ADP/O ratios indicated that oxidative phosphorylation was fully coupled to electron transport in mitochondria isolated from 6- and 18-month-old tubers. Cytochrome c oxidase (EC 1.9.3.1) activities of intact mitochondria were also not affected by tuber age. The difference in respiration during sprouting was unique to whole tubers, as oxygen consumption by mitochondria from young and oid tubers was equal on a milligram protein basis. Sprouting 18-month-old tubers had 15% more mitochondrial protein per gram fresh weight than did 6-month-old tubers. Older tubers also produced more ATP than younger tubers prior to and during sprouting, through a fully coupled, Cyt-mediated respiratory pathway, reduced sprout vigor notwithstanding. From 5 to 10 days of sprouting, coinciding with development of the age-induced difference in whole-tuber respiration, ATP concentration in 18-month-old tubers increased to become 52% higher than that in 6-month-old tubers. ATP synthase (EC 3.6.1.34), assessed by SDS-PAGE and immunoblots of β- and oligomycin-sensitivity conferring protein-subunits, also increased as a proportion of SMP protein in older tubers during this period. Relative to 6-month-old tubers, the increased respiration and associated oxidative phosphorylation of 18-rnonth-old tubers during sprouting were probably in response to a lower adenylate energy charge (AEC) prior to sprouting (from 0 fo 5 days). From 5 to 10 days of sprouting, AEC of 18-rnonth-old tubers increased to equal that of 6-month-old tubers and the two tuber ages maintained the same AEC for the remainder of the 20-day sprouting interval. Higher respiration and lower AEC of older tubers in storage at 4°C, along with the fact that older tubers respired at a higher rate to achieve the same AEC as younger tubers during sprouting, indicate greater utilization of ATP by older tubers.  相似文献

Microtubers of 13 cultivars, largely grown in Italy and other European countries, were induced. They were stored in the dark at 3°C for different periods (28, 56, 84 and 105 days), prior to being transferred to 20°C for between 4 and 17 weeks. Following removal to room temperature, sprouting was recorded and dormancy duration quantified. Dormancy decreased from 28.1 to 19.9, 11.1 and 7.8 days with reduced time of storage. Cvs Arsy, Nicola and Jaerla took consistently more time for dormancy release. The dormancy duration was linearly and inversely correlated with the length of storage. After sprouting, tubers were held at 20°C for various intervals and a range of physiological ages (0, 368, 720 and 1008 degree days) were accumulated. The field comparison of microtubers evidenced a plant growth response and tuber yield/plant affected by the cultivar and physiological age. In early cultivars (Jaerla), a better performance was shown by younger tubers; the opposite trend was noted in Alpha (a later cultivar) with an increase in stems/plant, tubers/plant and tuber yield/plant for tubers with greater physiological age. Like conventional seed tubers, microtubers showed differences in optimum physiological age associated with cultivar earliness. This study has provided some indications on how to enhance emergence and haulm development of plants from microtubers.  相似文献

In three years, between three and six seed stocks of cv. Pentland Crown were planted in field experiments. Seed tubers, stem bases and progeny tubers from the growing crop and tubers at harvest and after storage were sampled intensively and estimates of inoculum and disease made for five principal tuber diseases: the blemishes skin spot (Polyscytalum pustulans), silver scurf (Helminthosporium solani) and black scurf (Rhizoctonia solani) and bacterial soft rot (Erwinia carotovora). The data were principally used to calculate sample variances after transformation of % values to logits. A variance of 0.010 was selected as giving acceptable accuracy for most purposes and to achieve such values substantial numbers of samples would have been needed. Five to ten 50-tuber samples of seed tubers or 15–20 samples of a harvested or stored crop would have been required for assessing disease symptoms and similar numbers of samples for assessing gangrene potential by a standard damage test. The eye plug test for assessing inoculum of the three blemishing diseases used 15 or 20-tuber samples and five such samples of seed or about ten from the growing crop would usually have been adequate. Variances were nearly always greater for black scurf assessments than for other blemishing diseases. The data also illustrated changes in inoculum and disease levels during the season and in store. Their significance for understanding the epidemiology of the diseases and for storage disease forecasting is discussed.  相似文献
