Parameters related to the occurrence, aggregation, and population structure of the nematode Contracaecum rudolphii Hartwich, 1964 , in the great cormorant ( Phalacrocorax carbo ) from northeastern Poland were analyzed. A total of 491 birds of different ages (adults, immatures, and nestlings) was examined; the cormorants studied were taken from both fresh- and brackish water habitats. Contracaecum rudolphii were found in stomachs of 454 birds (92.5%); the 46,244 nematodes included third- (L3) and fourth-stage larvae (L4), and sub-adult and adult females and males. The distribution of nematodes in the host population were highly aggregated. The occurrence of C. rudolphii was significantly dependent on the host's age and habitat, as well as on season; the proportion of development stages differed significantly depending on birds' age and season (the latter only in adult birds). The infrapopulations of C. rudolphii in the adult cormorants showed distinct density-dependent correlations: that is, as the infrapopulation size increased, the number of adult females C. rudolphii decreased, and the proportion of larvae and sub-adult females increased. A higher proportion of larvae and sub-adult females characterized the component population structure of the nematodes in the cormorant nestlings, compared with adult birds, probably because of immune system deficiency in the immature birds, coupled with the development of the nematode population. Seasonal changes in the C. rudolphii population, observed in the adult cormorants, were not related to seasonality of the L3 occurrence in food; instead, the changes are believed to have resulted from independent processes of elimination of the oldest nematodes and their replacement by larval stages that subsequently matured.  相似文献

The development of Anguillicola crassus in experimentally infected Ariosoma balearicum (Anguilloidea, Congridae) kept in seawater was studied in the laboratory. In parallel trials the effect of water salinity on the development of larval A. crassus in European eels Anguilla anguilla was also investigated using eels kept in seawater of a salinity of 34 per thousand. Both eel species were orally inoculated with L3 larvae of A. crassus and then maintained for up to 3 mo at 18 degrees C in seawater. 110 d post infection, no adult but larval (L3 and L4) stages of A. crassus were detected in the swimbladder wall of Balearic congers, although this period of time was sufficient for the parasites to develop to the adult stage in European eel kept in seawater. The results presented suggest that the definitive host specificity of A. crassus comprises species of the family Anguillidae (i.e. the genus Anguilla), but not members of the Congridae. Theoretically however, A. balearicum might serve as a metaparatenic host. Factors determining the definitive host range of A. crassus remain to be elucidated. Water salinity does not seem to act as a factor affecting definitive host specificity once the parasite has become ingested by the eel.  相似文献

Factors regulating gastrointestinal nematode infrapopulations are to a great extent density-dependent. Here, 23 natural infrapopulations (41-281 individuals) of the viviparous nematode Procamallanus elatensis (Camallanidae) from the fish Siganus rivulatus were found distributed in a well-defined fundamental niche (posterior 55% of the intestine). Immature worms were mostly found in the anterior third of this niche, while mature worms were found in aggregations posterior to them and followed by gravid females in the posterior 20% of the intestine. This distribution strongly suggests that worms migrate towards the posterior intestine while they mature, copulate and reproduce. In small infrapopulations, the sex ratios were distinctly female-biased and the number of gravid females was low. In large infrapopulations, the sex ratios were distinctly male-biased and the number of gravid females was high. However, the mean lengths of both immature males and females and mature females decreased dramatically as the infrapopulation size increased, while those of mature males increased significantly. These results strongly suggest intraspecific competition and density-dependent regulation of mean worm length, and the increase in the mean length of mature males strongly suggests intense sexual selection and competition between mature males. Production of larvae by female worms decreased significantly as the infrapopulation size increased, suggesting a density-dependent reduction in female worm fertility. The results are statistically significant and strongly suggest that infrapopulation self-regulation is through density-dependent mechanisms, in which development of immature worms, infrapopulation size, sex ratio, sexual selection and carrying capacity of the fundamental niche play essential roles in shaping and regulating the infrapopulations.  相似文献

In temperate waters of the NE Atlantic, third-stage larvae of Anisakis simplex sensu stricto collected from 3 paratenic host species were identified by restriction fragment length polymorphisms. The condition of wild larval infrapopulations was assessed by examining morphometric and growth characteristics. The differentiation patterns and the excretory/secretory products of larvae grown in vitro were also examined. An extensive morphometric, growth and differentiation variability was found between parasite larvae collected from different paratenic host sources. Nematode infrapopulation larvae from the squid comprise those smaller individuals with the lowest values of survival rates and moult success. It may be then concluded that the fitness of A. simplex s. str. larvae is not the best possible in the squid, which impaired the competitiveness of the parasite and its chances of developing into an adult. This suggests that the microenvironments impaired by the paratenic host may provide larval infrapopulations with unique ecological factors probably influencing its recruitment to the final host populations.  相似文献

Some 5700 Ruffs were ringed in the southern Kenyan rift valley during 1967–79, mainly at Lakes Nakuru and Magadi. These have produced 15 recoveries outside East Africa, 14 in Siberia between 73° and 154°E and one in India. Adult males returned to Kenya mainly during August, and females during late August and early September. Females greatly outnumbered males at all times. Most wintering males departed late in March and early in April, but females not until about a month later. First-year birds appeared from the end of August, but remained in low numbers until late October or November. Most departed during April and May, but a few females oversummered. First-year birds typically accounted for about 25% of the wintering Nakuru females, but about 50% of those at Magadi. At both sites they accounted for a higher proportion of male birds than females. Most of the birds at Nakuru throughout late August to May appeared to be local winterers, and many individuals remained in the area for many months each year. Retrapping indicated that approximately 60% of each season's birds returned the following season. Adult males and most adult females commenced pre-winter wing moult before arrival, but completed most of it in Kenya. Males moulted 3–4 weeks ahead of females, and most had finished before December. Females typically finished during December and early January. Most second year birds timed their pre-winter moult similarly to older adults. Suspension was recorded in over 15% of all moulting birds examined. Adult pre-summer moult involved most or all of the tertials, some or all of the tail feathers, most of the inner wing coverts and the body and head plumage. It occurred mainly during January to March (males) or February to April (females), although tertial renewal commonly began a month earlier. Males showed no sign in Kenya of the supplementary prenuptial moult. First-year birds moulted from juvenile into first winter body plumage during late September to November. They underwent a pre-summer moult similar in extent and timing to that of adults, and again about a month earlier in males than females. Spring feathers acquired were often as brightly coloured as those of adults. About 15% of first-year birds renewed their outer 2–4 pairs of large primaries during January to April. Adult and first-year birds fattened before spring departure, commonly reaching weights 30–60% above winter mean. Weights of adult males peaked early in April, those of adult females early in May, and those of first-winter females later in May. Weights were relatively high also during August and September. This was due to the arrival of wintering birds carrying ‘spare’ reserves, and also apparently to the presence of a late moulting fattening passage contingent. The wing length of newly moulted adults was about 3 mm longer than that of newly arrived first-year birds, but there was no evidence of an increase in the wing kngth of adults with successive moults. Adult wing length decreased by 4–5 mm between the completion of one moult and the middle stages of the next. The migrations and annual timetable of Kenyan wintering Ruffs are discussed, and their moult strategy is compared with that of other Holarctic waders.  相似文献

Females of the cotton leafworm (Spodoptera littoralis) reared in long day conditions (LD 16:8 h) and mated to males kept throughout the whole period of development in continuous light (LL) oviposit very small numbers of mostly sterile eggs. It was found that in control males reared from the first larval instar in long day conditions there was a large accumulation of euperene sperm bundles in their testes on day 1 after imaginal moult. On day 10 of adult life the number of the sperm bundles was very small. In males kept from the first instar in continuous light there was also high number of sperm bundles on day 1 after imaginal moult but it did not decrease significantly on day 10 as was observed in controls. Transfer of different developmental stages of S. littoralis from long day conditions to continuous light resulted in a big difference in the density of eupyrene sperm bundles in their testes. In control insects reared through the whole of their development in long day conditions there was a significant decrease in the density of eupyrene sperm bundles on day 10 of adult life. By contrast, in males in continuous light, regardless of their developmental stage when transferred, there was either no change in density of sperm bundles in day 10 adults or there was a significant increase in comparison with day 1 adults. The highest density of eupyrene sperm bundles was observed in day 10 adults when they were transferred to continuous light shortly before moulting to the last instar (as day 4 larvae in the last stadium or day 1 pupae). Generally, the density of eupyrene sperm bundles on day 10 of adult development was about 2–2.5 times higher in males in continuous light then those under long day conditions. The results presented here indicate that the last larval instar and the pupa are the stages most sensitive to constant light treatment, which greatly reduces the amount of eupyrene sperm bundles released from the testes.  相似文献

1. Cuticles were isolated from the adult males, adult females, the second molt (2M) sheath from the infective larvae (L3(2M)), and the parasitic third stage (L3) of the sheep parasite Haemonchus contortus by a combination of mechanical disruption and detergent treatment. 2. The 2ME soluble cuticular proteins from adult males contained 4 or 5 major protein bands with molecular weights ranging from 100 to 56 kD with the most prominent band at 56 kD. The cuticular proteins from adult females were similar to the male. 3. Cuticular proteins from the larval stages, 2M cuticle, and L3 cuticle, differed from the adults and from each other. The most prominent protein bands were observed with molecular weights on 78 and 39 kD for the L3 cuticle and 100, 91 and 46 kD for the 2M cuticle. The 2ME soluble cuticular proteins from all developmental stages were at least partially digested by bacterial collagenase. 4. The amino acid composition of cuticular proteins was similar for the L3 and 2M, but adults had lesser amounts of glycine and greater amounts of basic amino acids than the larval stages. The amount of the isolated cuticle solubilized by the 2ME treatment was greatest in adults (80%) compared to the L3 (64%) and the 2M (22%). 5. These results support a hypothesis that there are quantitative and qualitative stage specific differences in the cuticular proteins of H. contortus.  相似文献

The infection by swimbladder nematodes of the genus Anguillicola (Dracunculoidea: Anguillicolidae) was examined in 2 populations of the Japanese eel Anguilla japonica in SW Taiwan. Wild eels from the Kao-Ping river were compared with cultured eels from an adjacent aquaculture unit. Only the cosmopolitan species Anguillicola crassus was present. Among wild eels, prevalence of infection varied between 21 and 62%, and mean intensity between 1.7 and 2.7 for adult worms. Similar intensity values (1.3 to 2.8) were recorded for the larvae. In cultured eels, prevalence as well as mean intensities were higher. In the cultured hosts, mean larval intensities exceeded those of adult worms 2-fold, and maximum larval intensities were 4- to 5-fold higher than in eels from the river. In cultured eels, dead larvae were also more abundant than in wild eels. We conclude that infrapopulations of A. crassus in Japanese eels are regulated by the defense system of this host, intraspecific density-dependent regulation being less likely as the major regulatory mechanism. No influence of the parasite on eel condition was found in either wild or cultured eels, indicating a low or moderate pathogenic effect of A. crassus on this host. This study shows that A. crassus is moderately common in cultured and wild Japanese eels in Taiwan, where the parasite is endemic.  相似文献

A humoral immune response of the European eel Anguilla anguilla elicited by an experimental infection was demonstrated for the first time against the swimbladder nematode Anguillicola crassus. Eels were experimentally infected once or repeatedly and the antibody response was observed over a period of 325 d. Specific antibodies against A. crassus in the peripheral blood of the eels were measured using an ELISA and the immunoblot technique. Anti-A. crassus antibodies were first observed 8 wk post infection, and appeared to be independent of both the number of infective third stage larvae (L3) administered and the frequency of administration. However, individual eels showed great differences in the course of the antibody response. The late appearance of antibodies in the peripheral blood supports the hypothesis that not the invading L3 but rather the adult parasites elicit the production of specific antibodies. A stage-specific antibody response against the L3 was not observed. Main antigens are located in the body wall, especially in the gelatinous outer cuticle, of adult A. crassus.  相似文献

Light and scanning electron microscopic studies showed the differences in morphology and in size of Haller's organ in larvae, nymphs and adults (females and males) of Hyalomma marginatum marginatum Koch, 1844. The length of the anterior pit setae increases during post-embryonic development. The localization of these setae is the same in all stages. Six setae (one porose seta, two grooved setae, two fine setae, one conical seta) contain anterior pit of various developmental stages. In nymphs and adults more numerous pores appear on the wall surface of porose seta than in the larval stage. The structure of the capsule roof also differs in various developmental stages. Haller's organ of Hyalomma m. marginatum shows great degree of morphological development which is connected with the complicated life cycle and feeding behaviour of this tick species.  相似文献

Long-distance migrants have evolved complex strategies for the timing of their annual moult, fattening and migration cycles. These strategies are likely to vary at different stages of a bird's life. Ringing data on 6079 Grey Plovers Pluvialis squatarola , caught on the Wash, England, between 1959 and 1996, were analysed to relate migratory strategies to patterns of primary moult and body mass changes. Adults returning from breeding grounds had a shorter and delayed primary moult (duration 90 days, starting date 19 August) in comparison with over-summering birds (duration 109 days, starting date 5 June). Three categories of migrant adults were identified on the basis of primary moult and body mass: (1) birds which did not moult, but increased body mass and migrated further south; (2) birds which moulted 1–3 inner primaries, suspended moult, increased body mass and migrated; and (3) birds which completed or suspended moult and wintered locally. In birds of the second category, timing of primary moult and body mass increase overlapped. Among wintering birds, 38% were in suspended moult. Ninety-six per cent of birds that suspended moult at the beginning of winter were males and almost all completed moult in spring. Grey Plovers which left Britain in autumn had an average body mass of 280 g, enough to reach southern Morocco without refuelling. Both wintering adults and first-year birds showed a prewinter body mass increase, peaking in December. Adults had a synchronized premigratory body mass increase in May, which suggested a negligible presence of African migrants. The average departure mass for spring migration, estimated at 316 g, would allow birds to fly non-stop to the Siberian breeding grounds in western Taymyr.  相似文献

Little attention has been focused on the effect of anthropogenic compounds that disrupt the endocrine systems in crustaceans. Consequently, this study investigated the effects of the juvenile hormone analogue (JHA), Fenoxycarb on selected physiological and developmental processes of the zoeal stages in the European lobster, Homarus gammarus. Chronic exposure to Fenoxycarb (50microg L(-1)) resulted in a significant (p < 0.05) reduction in moult frequency and size at moult. Fenoxycarb exposure extended zoeal duration between zoea I to II (p<0.05) and resulted in total inhibition of the moult from zoea II to III. Significantly greater rates of O2 uptake were observed in Fenoxycarb-exposed larvae in comparison with controls (p<0.05). All rates of O2 uptake decreased significantly between 7 and 12d of exposure (p<0.05). At 12d, exposure to the solvent control no longer influenced rates of O2 uptake, but it was not possible to attribute increased O2 uptake to Fenoxycarb exposure directly, as treated individuals did not moult beyond zoea III. The low exposure concentrations of Fenoxycarb, comparable to those used in plant protection, resulted in endocrine disrupted responses in H. gammarus (albeit with little clear, demonstrable effect on metabolism) a finding that could have important ecological and commercial implications.  相似文献

Timing and duration of primary moult in three populations of Purple Sandpipers Calidris maritima were described and discussed in relation to the birds’ need to complete moult before the onset of winter, when resources are required for survival. We predicted that moult would be completed earlier by birds wintering at higher latitudes. The south Norwegian breeding population, which moults and winters along the coast of east Britain (54–57°N) had a mean starting date of 21 July for primary moult (16 July for females and 24 July for males), a mean duration of 61 days, and completed on 20 September. Resident Icelandic (64–65°N) birds had a mean starting date of 22 July for primary moult (17 July for females and 25 July for males), a mean duration of 51 days, and completed on 11 September. Birds moulting in north Norway (70°N) arrived in north Norway in suspended primary moult or without having started moult, and completed it there. They had a mean completion date of 2 November for primary moult (31 October for females and 3 November for males). Starting date and duration could not be estimated because some suspended moult for an undetermined period, but it was thought that they started in late August. It is likely that most originated from Russia. The onset of moult appears to be set by the end of breeding and there is little overlap in these two events. The earlier start of moult by females in all three populations may be because they abandon the males when the chicks hatch, leaving the males to attend the chicks. Although the duration of primary moult followed the expected trend, being fastest in north Norway and slowest in Britain, the onset of moult was so late in north Norway that they had an unexpectedly late completion date, despite their rapid moult. The late completion of primary moult in north Norway suggests that wintering in the far north may not pose the energetic constraints on Purple Sandpipers that had previously been supposed.  相似文献

The sex ratio of the fish used in this study, was 1:1.5 females to males. Natural spawning of the keelback mullet, Liza carinata, in captivity was possible and occurred between December and February. The mean fertilized egg diameter of L. carinata was 0.8±.051 mm. Hatching took place after 36 h at 23°C. The mean total length of the just-hatched larvae was 2.0±0.179 mm. Larval developmental stages, growth, and morphological changes of L. carinata were described on the basis of a series of specimens (391 in total) reared from days 1 to 89 after hatching. Details of the larval developmental stages were drawn and photographed, with special reference being taken of morphological transformations. Larvae completed yolk absorption on the sixth day after hatching, and opened their mouths on day 4. Notochord flexion started on the sixteenth day at 5.0 mm total length. Transformation from larval to juvenile stage occurred between days 30 and 51 after hatching. The maximum size of larvae and the minimum size of juveniles which appeared during the transitional period were 19 and 9.9 mm TL, respectively. By day 51, all the larvae had changed into juveniles with a mean TL of 29.3±6.429 mm. The juveniles started to change into young adults with three anal spines by day 88 at a TL of 62 mm. Some morphological features of inhibited fourth stage (L4) and fourth moult larvae (4M) of the bovine lungworm Dictyocaulus viviparus are described. Inhibition was induced by maintaining the third stage larvae (L3) for 6 weeks at 4 degrees C. Inhibited fourth stage (L4) and fourth moult larvae (4M) were collected by perfusion of the lungs of experimentally infected calves after necropsy at 15 and 68 days post infection (d.p.i.), respectively. Inhibited 4M, isolated at 68 d.p.i., were about ten times larger than inhibited L4 isolated at 15 d.p.i.  相似文献

We report here the construction of Tubby-RFP balancers for the X, 2nd and 3rd chromosomes of Drosophila melanogaster. The insertion of a 2xTb-RFP transgene on the FM7c, CyO, and TM3 balancer chromosomes introduces two easily scorable, dominant, developmental markers. The strong Tb phenotype is visible to the naked eye at the larval L2, L3, and pupal stages. The RFP associated with the cuticle is easily detected at all stages from late embryo to adult with the use of a fluorescence stereomicroscope. The FM7c Bar 2xTb-RFP, CyO Cy 2xTb-RFP, and TM3 Sb 2xTb-RFP balancers will greatly facilitate the analysis of lethals and other developmental mutants in L2/L3 larvae and pupae, but also provide coverage of other stages beginning in late embryogenesis through to the adult.  相似文献

End products of tryptophan metabolism in Carausius morosus are the ommochromes ommin and xanthommatin in the epidermis, and kynurenic acid in the faeces. During larval and adult life ommochromes and mainly kynurenic acid are formed. The concentration of kynurenic acid in the faeces of adult females is 2.5 times lower than in the larvae and in adult males. Allatectomy on the first day after a larval moult induces a much longer instar (10 days) than normal. After the following moult, the allatectomized animals are transformed into adultoids. The allatectomized and normal larvae produce similar amounts of kynurenic acid and ommochrome during the larval instar. Twenty days after last ecdysis, the ommochrome content in adult and adultoids is increased. In the faeces of adultoids, however, the concentration of kynurenic acid is higher than in normal female adults, but lower than in males and larvae.  相似文献

The population structure and habitat selection of Anisakis simplex in 35 harbor porpoises off Denmark are described. The nematodes were collected from the stomach and duodenal ampulla and were categorized as third-stage larvae, fourth-stage larvae, subadults, and adults. The porpoises harbored 8,043 specimens of A. simplex. The proportion of adults and subadults increased with infrapopulation size. The number of development stages across infrapopulations covaried significantly (Kendall's test of concordance). Concordance was higher in hosts with the highest intensities than in those with low and medium intensities. All stages occurred mainly in the forestomach, but this trend was stronger for the adults. Adult and subadult sex ratios did not depart significantly from 1:1. Our data suggested that recruitment and duration of each stage were the main factors accounting for infrapopulation structure. The preference of A. simplex for the forestomach conformed with previous studies, but the narrower distribution of adults relative to other stages might indicate a strategy to enhance mating opportunities. Information on sex ratios of A. simplex is scarce and contradictory. We suggest that the discrepancies might partly reflect differences in categorization criteria and statistical methods.  相似文献

Nymphs of presumptive winged gynoparae of Aphis fabae (Hemiptera: Aphididae), were exposed to female parasitoids, Aphidius colemani (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) and stung once with the ovipositor. Wing development was inhibited and, when aphids were parasitised during the early stages, they did not reach the adult stage but mummies with rudimentary or no wingbuds are observed in the host's fourth-stadium. These and previous studies have suggested that wing development may be inhibited by factor(s) from the maternal parasitoid injected into the host at the time of oviposition. In an attempt to identify such factor(s), saline extracts of whole female parasitoids, abdomens, ovaries and venom glands were prepared. When a saline extract of venom glands was injected into late-second-stadium aphids, many develop to fourth-stadium nymphs with rudimentary wingbuds, indicating an effect on wing formation but also showed developmental arrest and often died when attempting to moult to the adult stage. It appears that host death may be related to physiological/biochemical interactions of parasitoid and host rather than just late stage parasitoid larvae ingesting the host's vital organs. Injections with extracts into later host stadia gave similar results with regard to development to the adult, although aphids injected in the late-fourth-stadium develop normally to the adult stage with no effect on wing formation. The results indicate that the earlier the injection before the final moult the greater the effect of the injected extract on preventing adult development.Extracts prepared from head + thorax do not affect aphid development and the results indicate that there is an active factor(s) - likely a protein - in the female parasitoid's venom that disrupts wing development and/or inhibits development to the adult stage. Surprisingly, injections of extracts from male parasitoids have similar effects but the location and function of such a factor(s) in males are unknown.  相似文献
