Chromosomal analysis of eight Indian natural populations (six from north India and two from south India) of Drosophila melanogaster revealed the presence of 13 paracentric inversions, including one in the X chromosome. All four types of inversions--common cosmopolitan (4), rare cosmopolitan (3), recurrent endemic (2), and unique endemic (4)--were detected. The frequency of commonly occurring inversions and the level of inversion heterozygosity were found to be higher in the two southern populations. The south Indian populations are genetically more differentiated than those from the north. Also, latitudinal clines in the frequencies of the four common cosmopolitan inversions were detected. These results provide further evidence for the existence of inversion clines in Indian populations of D. melanogaster.  相似文献

Twenty different natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster were sampled to determine the frequencies of inversions. Based on their frequencies and geographical distributions, the inversions could be classified as follows: (1) Common cosmopolitan inversions that are present in many populations in frequencies exceeding five percent and that may exhibit frequency clines over large geographical regions; (2) Rare cosmopolitan inversions that occur throughout the species range but usually at frequencies below five percent and that may be absent in many populations; (3) Recurrent endemic inversions that are found in several adjacent populations in frequencies usually not exceeding one or two percent; and (4) Unique endemic inversions that are found only among the progeny of a single individual and that may represent one aspect of the syndrome termed "hybrid dysgenesis". Four common cosmopolitan inversions that exhibit highly significant clines in populations in the eastern United States are In(2L)t, In(2R)NS, In(3L)P and In(3R)P.  相似文献

To study the genetic differentiation and inversion clines in Indian natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster, 14 natural populations (6 from the north and 8 from the south) were screened for chromosome inversions. The chromosomal analysis revealed the presence of 23 paracentric inversions, which include 4 common cosmopolitan, 4 rare cosmopolitan, 2 recurrent endemic, and 13 unique endemic (new inversions detected for the first time) inversions. The difference in karyotype frequencies between populations from the north and south were highly significant and the level of inversion heterozygosity was higher in populations from the south. Statistically significant negative correlations were found between each of the four common cosmopolitan inversions and latitude. These findings are in accord with results from other worldwide geographic regions and show that Indian populations of D. melanogaster have undergone considerable genetic differentiation at the level of inversion polymorphism.  相似文献

Nineteen Australasian populations of Drosophila melanogaster have been screened for chromosome inversion polymorphisms. All 15 of the inversion types found are paracentric and autosomal, but only four of these, one on each of the major autosome arms, are common and cosmopolitan. North-south clines occur, with the frequencies of all four of the common cosmopolitan inversions increasing toward the equator. These clines in the Southern Hemisphere mirror north-south clines in the Northern Hemisphere, where the frequencies of all four of the common cosmopolitan inversions again increase towards the equator.-While few of the Australasian populations show significant disequilibrium between linked common cosmopolitan inversions, those that do invariably have excesses of coupling gametes, which is consistent with other reports. We also find nonrandom associations between the two major autosomes, with the northern populations in Australasia (those with high inversion frequencies) tending to be deficient in gametes with common cosmopolitan inversions on both major autosomes, while the southern populations in Australasia (low inversion frequencies) tend to have an excess of this class of gametes.-The clines and the nonrandom associations between the two major autosomes are best interpreted in terms of selection operating to maintain the common cosmopolitan inversion polymorphisms in natural populations of D. melanogaster.  相似文献

ABSTRACT To analyze chromosome inversions of Drosophila immigrans , wild flies were captured from large vineyards located in the suburbs of Yecheon and Gyeongsan from October 1999 to 2001. With the egg samples obtained singly at each of the 799 females of D. immigrans , cytological examinations were carried out for the type and frequency of inversions. Two types of different inversions were found only in the second chromosome. The inversions detected were known to be the cosmopolitan inversion "A" and "B". The mean frequency of inversion A was estimated to be 0.074 in Yecheon and 0.066 in Gyeongsan and that of B was to be 0.026 in Yecheon and 0.021 in Gyeongsan, respectively. In the frequency ratio, inversion A was significantly higher than that of B. The present populations of D. immigrans showed subtle differences from other Korean populations in inversion frequencies. To account for the local variations observed in inversion frequencies, several hypotheses are discussed such as founding event or selective force.  相似文献

Chromosome Studies in Wild Populations of D. MELANOGASTER   总被引:6,自引:4,他引:2       下载免费PDF全文
Chromosome studies of wild D. melanogaster populations from Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas uncovered 58 inversions. Six were common and cosmopolitan; 52 were new, rare and generally endemic. In one of two Missouri populations tested, structurally heterozygous females carried significantly more sperm at capture than did the homozygotes. In both populations comparisons of wild sperms with the females carrying them indicated significant positive assortative mating and an excess production of homozygotes among the F1 progeny. Wild females structurally heterozygous in up to three major autosomal arms showed no associated nondisjunctional egg lethality; those heterozygous in all four arms produced from 0% to 24% dead eggs, suggesting the presence of intrapopulational gene modifiers of meiosis. Texas populations supported on windfall citrus fruit showed a slight but significant difference in inversion frequencies between flies breeding on oranges and those breeding on grapefruit. Within these populations inversions were not distributed at random among individuals; rather there was an observed excess of individuals carrying intermediate numbers, and a deficiency of those carrying very few or very many inversions. While there was no significant linkage disequilibrium associated with this central tendency, there was a significant interchromosomal interaction: flies carrying inversions in chromosome 2 tended not to carry them in chromosome 3, and vice versa.  相似文献

The chromosome O of Drosophila subobscura was studied with respect to genetic variability at three enzyme loci (Odh, Me, and Lap-4) and with respect to inversion polymorphism. Population samples were taken from seven localities along a north-south gradient from Sweden and Scotland to Tunisia. The chromosomal analysis revealed clinal frequency changes for gene arrangements from north to south. With the enzyme loci Odh and Me allele frequencies are similar throughout the distribution range. Both loci are located outside the common inversion complex O3+4. On the other hand, frequency changes parallel to those of the gene arrangements were observed for the alleles of the Lap-locus. Nonrandom associations between Lap-alleles and the superimposed gene arrangements OST, O3+4, O3+4+8, and O3+4+23 were found. These gene arrangements differ from each other with respect to allele frequencies at the Lap-locus but for a given gene arrangement the relative frequencies of Lap-alleles remain relatively constant along the north-south gradient. Thus allele frequencies at the Lap-locus can be predicted from inversion frequencies. These observations can be interpreted in such a way that the pattern of allozyme variation within gene arrangements is due to founder effects caused by the unique origin of inversions. The gene blocks in the different inversions seem to represent more or less separated gene pools. In polymorphic populations the coexistence of genetically differentiated inversions presumably gives rise to heterotic interaction.  相似文献

Twelve Indian natural populations of Drosophila ananassae, a cosmopolitan and domestic species, were sampled and laboratory populations (mass cultures) were established from naturally impregnated females. These populations were maintained in the laboratory for some generations and were analysed chromosomally to know the frequency of different inversions. The chromosomal analysis revealed the presence of three cosmopolitan inversions. The data on the whole show that there are significant differences in the frequencies of different chromosome arrangements in these populations. Body size (wing length and thorax length) was measured in both sexes (50 females and 50 males), in all the 12 geographical populations of D. ananassae. There are statistically significant differences in wing length as well as in thorax length of both sexes among different geographical populations. Five geographical strains were crossed reciprocally and body size (wing length and thorax length) was measured in F1 and F2 progeny. The comparison of body size (both traits) between mid‐parent, F1 and F2 shows that there is an increase in body size in F1 and F2 progeny as compared with parents. Thus, there is no break down of heterosis in F2, which suggests absence of coadaptation in geographical populations of D. ananassae. Scaling test statistical analysis showed additive, dominance and epistatic effects in certain crosses involving geographical strains of D. ananassae. Correlation between chromosome arrangement frequency and body size has also been tested and significant negative correlation has been found between 2L – ST chromosome arrangement and male thorax.  相似文献

Seasonal variation (spring, early summer, late summer, and autumn) of gametic disequilibrium between gene arrangements (OST and O3+4) of the O chromosome and Lap, Pept-1, and Acph allozyme loci, located inside these inversions, has been recorded in a natural population of Drosophila subobscura during seven years over a 15-year period. The length of the study allowed us to investigate the temporal variation of the allozyme-inversion associations by statistical methods of time series analysis. Cyclic seasonal changes of allozyme-inversion associations for both Lap and Pept-1 are detected in the natural population. In both cases, the patterns of seasonal change are due to the seasonal change of frequency of Lap and Pept-1 allozymes occurring exclusively within the OST gene arrangement. In contrast, the allozyme frequencies at these loci within the O3+4 gene arrangement are stable along seasons. The patterns of temporal variation of allozyme-inversion associations for Lap and Pept-1 in the natural population are contrasted with those previously published that correspond to gene arrangements of the O chromosome and nucleotide polymorphism at the rp49 region located inside these inversions, suggesting that natural selection is operating on these allozyme-inversion associations.  相似文献

Abstract Data are reported showing large directional changes in the frequencies of some gene arrangements and arrangement combinations in certain natural populations of Drosophila robusta in the eastern United States. The changes involve the same X‐chromosomal inversion differences in two of the three localities studied and similar autosomal inversions in all three. These genetic changes provide a rare opportunity to observe evolutionary forces at work in nature. They are interpreted as being due to natural selection.  相似文献

When 41 populations from Africa (south of the Sahara) and Indian Ocean islands were analysed for their chromosomal inversion polymorphism, 34 rearrangements were found, including the four common cosmopolitans (In(2L)t, In(2R)NS, In(3L)P and In(3R)P), four rare cosmopolitans (In(2L)NS, In(3R)C, In(3R)Mo and In(3R)K) and six African polymorphic ('recurrent') endemics. Mean inversion frequencies per major autosome arm were positively and, generally, highly correlated to each other. There was no altitudinal nor latitudinal cline of inversion frequency, except for one African polymorphic endemic. Significant longitudinal clines were detected for In(2L)t, In(3L)P and In(3R)K; in all cases, inversion frequencies decreased eastward. Principal components analysis and ANOVA made it possible to distinguish three groups of populations. A high level of polymorphism was found in populations from west tropical Africa. The other low altitude populations from the mainland were moderately polymorphic, whereas the lowest levels of polymorphism were those of high altitude populations and of Indian Ocean islands. Moreover, some regional and local differentiation was also found. The frequency of unique autosomal inversions was not different from those found in Asia, Australia and America, but was significantly higher than that in Europe and North Africa. A West-East differentiation was also observed for the African polymorphic endemics. The present geographic pattern suggests a long, patchy evolution with restricted gene flow, followed by the modern period with numerous recent migrations linked to human transportation.  相似文献

The present study, which is one of the longest temporal (two decades) and largest spatial (different parts of India covered) investigations on inversion polymorphism in natural populations of D. ananassae, was undertaken to understand the dynamics of inversion polymorphism in a broad and comprehensive manner. Forty-five natural populations from different ecogeographic regions of the country (covering the regions from Kashmir to Kanniyakumari and Gujarat to Nagaland) were analysed for chromosomal inversions. All the populations show the presence of the three cosmopolitan inversions, frequencies of which vary among the populations analysed. Simple correlations between frequencies of different inversions and regression analysis of inversion frequencies with latitude, longitude and altitude were insignificant. This reinforces the concept of rigid polymorphism in D. ananassae. Genetic divergence (spatial and temporal) at the level of chromosomal polymorphism among natural populations was calculated. Results show spatial divergence but no temporal divergence. Rigid polymorphic systems of D. ananassae did not show long-term directional trends. On the basis of the present study, and after including comparisons with the studies conducted more than two decades ago, the most important conclusion to be drawn is that the three cosmopolitan inversions in D. ananassae segregate within populations at fairly similar frequencies, and the general geographic pattern has remained constant.  相似文献

Chromosomal rearrangements may play an important role in how populations adapt to a local environment. The gene arrangement polymorphism on the third chromosome of Drosophila pseudoobscura is a model system to help determine the role that inversions play in the evolution of this species. The gene arrangements are the likely target of strong selection because they form classical clines across diverse geographic habitats, they cycle in frequency over seasons, and they form stable equilibria in population cages. A numerical approach was developed to estimate the fitness sets for 15 gene arrangement karyotypes in six niches based on a model of selection-migration balance. Gene arrangement frequencies in the six different niches were able to reach a stable meta-population equilibrium that matched the observed gene arrangement frequencies when recursions used the estimated fitnesses with a variety of initial inversion frequencies. These analyses show that a complex pattern of selection is operating in the six niches to maintain the D. pseudoobscura gene arrangement polymorphism. Models of local adaptation predict that the new inversion mutations were able to invade populations because they held combinations of two to 13 local adaptation loci together.  相似文献

Inversions fail to account for allozyme clines   总被引:3,自引:6,他引:3       下载免费PDF全文
Allozyme and inversion data from natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster from the eastern United States were analyzed to determine whether the clines at allozyme loci are due to nonrandom associations with common cosmopolitan inversions. All inversions show strong clines. Clines were large and significant for half of the eight allozyme loci. An analysis of the contribution of inversions to clines of allozyme genes revealed three outcomes: the inversion cline (1) enhanced the allozyme cline, but was only partly responsible, (2) reduced the allozyme cline, and (3) had no effect. The allozyme clines were mainly determined by the pattern of allele frequencies within the chromosomal arrangements. Consequently, it was concluded that allozyme clines would exist in the absence of inversion clines.  相似文献

Twelve laboratory populations of recently collected Drosophila willistoni were begun with different frequencies of alleles at three enzyme loci, six populations at 25 degrees and six at 19 degrees . Periodic sampling of the populations allowed monitoring of the frequency changes in allozymes over time.-At Lap-5 (a locus coding for leucine amino peptidase), three alleles converged to the same frequencies in all populations at both temperatures. The apparent equilibrium frequency of the major allele was about.75; this is different from the frequency (.57) found in the natural population from which the experimental populations were begun. Allele frequency changes at the esterase-5 locus (Est-5) were slower but consistent in all cages. It is difficult to determine if an equilibrium has been reached. However, the frequency of the rare allele in all cages is about the same as in wild populations, 5%. Alleles at both Lap-5 and Est-5 are non-randomly associated with inversions in the chromosomes onto which they map. Because of these associations, it is impossible to unambiguously attribute the change in allele frequencies to selection at the loci being observed.-After one year, no significant gene frequency changes were detected at Est-7, the third locus studied.  相似文献

In Drosophila ananassae, three cosmopolitan inversions are very common in natural populations. Chromosomal polymorphism due to these inversions often persists when strains are maintained in the laboratory. A chromosomal analysis of a number of strains was made. Data on the frequencies of different gene sequences will be described separately. During the present investigation the same data have been analyzed in order to test the intra- and interchromosomal interactions in D. ananassae. The results reveal that interchromosomal interactions do not occur with respect to viability as unlinked inversions are associated randomly. However, the linked inversions of the third chromosome show non-random associations maintained by epistatic gene interaction and suppression of crossing over.  相似文献

The evolution of complex traits in heterogeneous environments may shape the order of genes within chromosomes. Drosophila pseudoobscura has a rich gene arrangement polymorphism that allows one to test evolutionary genetic hypotheses about how chromosomal inversions are established in populations. D. pseudoobscura has >30 gene arrangements on a single chromosome that were generated through a series of overlapping inversion mutations with >10 inversions with appreciable frequencies and wide geographic distributions. This study analyses the genomic sequences of 54 strains of Drosophila pseudoobscura that carry one of six different chromosomal arrangements to test whether (i) genetic drift, (ii) hitchhiking with an adaptive allele, (iii) direct effects of inversions to create gene disruptions caused by breakpoints, or (iv) indirect effects of inversions in limiting the formation of recombinant gametes are responsible for the establishment of new gene arrangements. We found that the inversion events do not disrupt the structure of protein coding genes at the breakpoints. Population genetic analyses of 2,669 protein coding genes identified 277 outlier loci harbouring elevated frequencies of arrangement‐specific derived alleles. Significant linkage disequilibrium occurs among distant loci interspersed between regions with low levels of association indicating that distant allelic combinations are held together despite shared polymorphism among arrangements. Outlier genes showing evidence of genetic differentiation between arrangements are enriched for sensory perception and detoxification genes. The data presented here support the indirect effect of inversion hypothesis where chromosomal inversions are favoured because they maintain linked associations among multilocus allelic combinations among different arrangements.  相似文献

A cytological analysis was carried out on the salivary-gland chromosomes of third-instar larvae deriving from appropriate crosses of the 31.1/CyL4 strain with the dp b cn bw and dp b cn bw; ve strains.(1) The 31.1 MRF induced chromosomal rearrangements in both male and female germ cells. (2) The aberrations that occurred in the male germ cells were of three types — inversions, duplications and deficiencies — whereas those that occurred in the female germ cells were of all types. (3) The distributions of the break-points among the 4 major autosomal arms between the 1F2 and 2AF2 larvae were different. (4) The total distribution of the break-points along the polytene chromosomes showed that the factor induced breaks in all major chromosomes (X, II, III), and that 51.81% of them occurred in sites showing late replication and/or ectopic pairing. (5) A relationship existed between the frequencies of the second chromosomal aberrations and male recombination.A comparison of the break-points induced by the factor was made with those found in the rare endemic inversions of the same natural population from which the 31.1 MRF was isolated. The possibility that the factor acts in the natural population is discussed.  相似文献

Allozyme loci are frequently found non randomly associated to the chromosomal inversions in which they are included in Drosophila. Two opposite views compete to explain strong allozyme-by-inversion gametic disequilibria: they result from natural selection or, conversely, merely represent remnants of associations accidentally established at the origin of inversions. Empirical efforts aimed at deciding between adaptive and historical scenarios have focused on the spatial distribution of disequilibria. Yet, the evolutionary significance of these associations remains uncertain. I report here the results of a time-series analysis of the seasonal variation of alleles at six allozyme loci (Acph, Lap, Pept-1, Ao, Mpi, and Xdh) in connection with the O chromosomal polymorphisms of D. subobscura. The findings were: (1) in the segment I of the O chromosome, Lap and Pept-1 allozymes changed seasonally in a cyclical fashion within the ST gene arrangement, but they changed erratically within the 3 + 4 gene configuration; (2) the frequencies of Lap1.11 and Pept-1(0.40) within ST dropped to their lowest values in early and late summer, respectively, when the seasonal level of the ST arrangement is lowest. Furthermore, Lap1.11 and Pept-1(0.40) covary with ST only within these seasons, yet in a fashion inconsistent with these alleles having a major influence on the dynamics of the inversion; (3) seasonal cycling of alleles within inversions were not detected at Acph, Ao, Mpi, and Xdh, yet these loci are nearly monomorphic at the study population, and/or their sampled series were shorter than those for Lap and Pept-1; and (4) simply monitoring allozyme frequencies separately for each inversion proved to be superior, for evidencing the seasonal cycles of the disequilibria, to the use of the D' coefficient of association. Observed seasonal cycles of allozymes within inversions likely reflect natural selection.  相似文献

Sampling of day-resting Anopheles funestus was carried out in September-November 1991, October-December 1992, and November 1994 at two sites near Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso: the small village of Noungou where humans outnumber cattle, and the nearby Fulani settlement of Loumbila where cattle outnumber humans. Collections made inside human dwellings were supplemented in 1992 by outdoor-resting samples from artificial pit-shelters. Indoor-resting An. funestus were also collected in November 1992 and November 1994 in four villages of the Banfora area (southern Burkina Faso) and in a sudanese-sahelian village in northern Burkina Faso (Tougouri). Half-gravid female sub-samples were preserved in carnoy's fixative and processed for polytene chromosome analysis. The material from the two villages near Ouagadougou was analysed by ELISA to know (i) the human/animal origin of the blood meal; (ii) the infectivity for Plasmodium falciparum malaria; and (iii) the possible correlation of these parameters with chromosomal variants. A total of 1416 An. funestus could be scored for the whole polytenic complement, while the origin of the blood meal and circumsporozoite protein (CSP) positivity were asserted from 1076 and 1154 specimens, respectively. With a few exceptions, four polymorphic paracentric inversions (3a, 3b, 2a and 5a in decreasing order of frequency) were observed in all populations. Inversion 2s, whose breaking points include those of inversion 2a, was found only as the heterokaryotype 2s/+ floating at an overall frequency of 3.7% in two villages of the Banfora area and in the two sites near Ouagadougou. Two heterokaryotypes 2a/t out of 186 scored specimens were observed in different years from one village of the Banfora area. Wide variations in inversion frequencies were observed among the samples without consistent geographical or temporal clines. Highly significant departures from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium were recorded for inversions 3a and 3b in most samples, with the alternative homokaryotypes (standard and inverted) significantly more frequent than expected. Conversely, inversion 5a was in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium in most samples, whereas the 2a-s inversion system was intermediate between these extremes. However, a deficit of heterokaryotypes was apparent practically in all samples. Significantly higher frequencies of the standard homokaryotypes were recorded (i) in the exophilic samples collected in Loumbila for arrangement 3a; (ii) in the animal-fed sub-sample collected outdoors in Noungou vs. the parallel human-fed sub-sample for arrangements 2a-s, 3a, and 3b, or vs. the samples obtained from indoor catches in both Loumbila and Noungou in the case of inversion 3a; (iii) in the December CSP-negative sub-sample from Loumbila vs. the parallel CSP-positive sub-sample for arrangement 2a. A plausible working hypothesis is that An. funestus in Burkina Faso includes two taxonomic units, one of which is mainly monomorphic standard with most inverted arrangements floating at very low frequencies, and probably uniquely characterised by arrangement 2s, while the other taxon is nearly fixed for arrangement 3ab and polymorphic for all the other inversions at intermediate to high frequencies. The latter would be characterised by a higher vectorial capacity and would probably correspond to An. funestus s.s. from East Africa. About the former hypothetical taxon, its endophily and anthropophily appear less marked and its relationship with other members of the An. funestus subgroup will require specific investigations.  相似文献
