A three-dimensional mathematical model useful for studies of the mechanics of the human skeletal thorax is described. To construct this model, rib cage elements are incorporated into a previously reported model of the thoracolumbar spine. The vertebrae and bony portions of the ribs and sternum are idealized as rigid bodies. The behavior of the discs, ligaments and costal cartilages are modelled by deformable elements. Appropriate geometric and stiffness property data are assigned to the elements of the model. In constructing the model, it was found that the mechanical response of the costo-vertebral joint is strongly influenced by articulation geometry. Although rigid bodies were used to model calcified portions of the ribs, the model predicted rib cage deformations in close agreement with those measured experimentally. These studies indicate that the rigid body motion of calcified portions of the rib makes a major contribution to the deformation of the rib cage in response to certain types of loadings. Quantitative results are also reported on the roles the rib cage plays in bending responses of the spine, the lateral stability of the spine, and the production and correction of several scoliotic deformities.  相似文献

Somites are transient mesodermal structures giving rise to all skeletal muscles of the body, the axial skeleton and the dermis of the back. Somites arise from successive segmentation of the presomitic mesoderm (PSM). They appear first as epithelial spheres that rapidly differentiate into a ventral mesenchyme, the sclerotome, and a dorsal epithelial dermomyotome. The sclerotome gives rise to vertebrae and ribs while the dermomyotome is the source of all skeletal muscles and the dorsal dermis. Quail-chick fate mapping and diI-labeling experiments have demonstrated that the epithelial somite can be further subdivided into a medial and a lateral moiety. These two subdomains are derived from different regions of the primitive streak and give rise to different sets of muscles. The lateral somitic cells migrate to form the musculature of the limbs and body wall, known as the hypaxial muscles, while the medial somite gives rise to the vertebrae and the associated epaxial muscles. The respective contribution of the medial and lateral somitic compartments to the other somitic derivatives, namely the dermis and the ribs has not been addressed and therefore remains unknown. We have created quail-chick chimeras of either the medial or lateral part of the PSM to examine the origin of the dorsal dermis and the ribs. We demonstrate that the whole dorsal dermis and the proximal ribs exclusively originates from the medial somitic compartment, whereas the distal ribs derive from the lateral compartment.  相似文献

An analysis of possible movements of human upper rib cage   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A geometrically realistic mathematical model of the first six ribs and vertebrae of the human rib cage is described. Under the assumption that the individual elements of the rib cage do not deform significantly, the possible range of movements of the model are determined subject to the constraint that the joint surfaces remain in contact. It is shown that normal movements of the ribs cannot be described as a rotation about a single fixed axis. The possible movements of the ribs are analyzed in terms of the misfit incurred at the costovertebral joint surfaces. This analysis shows that there is a movement, corresponding to lateral expansion of the rib for an increase in anteroposterior diameter, in which the misfit at the joint is minimized and also that small deviations from this movement involve only very small degrees of misfit at the joint surfaces. It is concluded that many observed "deformations" of the chest wall can be explained by rigid ribs and normal movements at the costovertebral joints. The interaction between the ribs and the spine is analyzed. It is shown that there can be considerable independent movement of the sternum and the spine, thus allowing mobility of the spine without forcing concomitant movements of rib cage.  相似文献

The achievement of consistently superior results in rhinoplasty is rendered difficult in part by a number of complex interplays between the anatomical structures of the nose and the techniques used for their alteration, such as tip sutures. The effects of sutures depend largely on the magnitude of suture tightening, the intrinsic forces on the cartilages, cartilage thickness, and the degree of soft-tissue undermining. The tip complex is perhaps the most intricate of the nasal structures, exhibiting subtle but evident responses to manipulations of the lower lateral cartilages. The three-dimensional effects of nine suture techniques that are frequently used in nasal tip surgical procedures are discussed and illustrated. (1) The medial crura suture approximates the medial crura and strengthens the support of the tip. The suture also has effects that are less conspicuous immediately. There is slight narrowing of the columella, caudal protrusion of the lobule, and minimal caudal rotation of the lateral crura. (2) The middle crura suture approximates the most anterior portion of the medial crura. There is greater strengthening of the tip and some approximation of the domes with this suture. (3) The interdomal suture approximates the domes and can equalize asymmetric domes. However, the entire tip may shift to the short side if there is a significant difference in the heights of the domes because of short lateral and medial crura. (4) Transdomal sutures narrow the domal arch while pulling the lateral crura medially. The net results are increased tip projection, alar rim concavity, and the potential need for an alar rim graft. In addition, depending on suture position, cephalic or caudal rotation of the lateral crura may be observed. (5) The lateral crura suture increases the concavity of the lateral crura, reduces the interdomal distance, and may retract the alar rims. Perhaps the most significant inadvertent results of this suture are caudal rotation of the tip and elongation of the nose. This is important because patients who undergo rhinoplasty would often benefit from cephalic, rather than caudal, rotation of the tip. (6) The medial crura-septal suture not only increases tip projection but also rotates the tip cephalically and retracts the columella. (7) The tip rotation suture shifts the tip cephalad while retracting the columella. (8) The medial crura footplate suture approximates the footplates, narrows the columella base, and improves undesirable nostril shape. (9) The lateral crura convexity control suture alters the degree of convexity of the lateral crura. The nuances of these sutures and their multiplanar effects on the nasal tip are discussed.  相似文献

Five anesthetized supine beagle dogs were scanned using a fast, multislice computed tomographic X-ray technique to determine the orientation of the ribs at total lung capacity (TLC) and functional residual capacity (FRC). A plane was fit to each rib using a coordinate system in which the z-axis was aligned approximately cephalocaudally and the x-z-plane coincided with the sagittal midplane. The orientation of each plane was described by "pump-handle" and "bucket-handle" angles. The ribs rotated downward and inward during a passive deflation of the lungs from TLC to FRC. Rib displacement was not uniform: bucket-handle motion was predominant in the upper ribs, and pump- and bucket-handle motions were equal in the lower ribs. The change in the pump-handle angles between TLC and FRC was approximately 6 degrees for ribs 3-8, and the change in the bucket-handle angles decreased with rib number from 16 degrees for rib 3 to 6 degrees for rib 8. Rib shape was described by fitting an ellipse to the data for each rib; the ribs became larger and more circular with increasing rib number.  相似文献

The medial preoptic nucleus is a sexually dimorphic structure whose cytoarchitecture, afferent and efferent connections, and functions have been previously described. No detailed ultrastructural study has, however, been perfomed to date. Here we describe the ultrastructural organization of this important preoptic structure of the male quail. Neuronal cell bodies of the medial preoptic nucleus generally show extensive development of protein-synthesis-related organelles (rough endoplasmic reticulum, polysomes), and of secretory structures (Golgi complexes, secretory vesicles, dense bodies). Previous morphometrical studies at the light-microscopical level have demonstrated the presence of a medial and a lateral neuronal population distinguished by the size of their cell bodies (the medial neurons are smaller than the lateral neurons). The present ultrastructural investigation confirms the difference in size, but no difference has been observed in the ultrastructural organization of the neurons. In both the medial and the lateral part, the nucleus is characterized by a large variety of cell bodies, including some that, on the basis of their ultrastructure, can be considered as putative peptidergic neurons. Close contacts are frequently observed between adjacent cell bodies that are normally arranged in clusters. Various types of synaptic endings are also present, suggesting a rich supply of nerve fibers. A few glial cells are scattered within the nucleus. In view of the crucial role of this region in regulating quail sexual behavior, the large heterogeneity of neurons and of afferent nervous fibers suggest that this region might have an important role in the integration of information arriving from different brain regions.  相似文献

Geometry and respiratory displacement of human ribs   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The three-dimensional coordinates of points in the ribs of two supine relaxed males, holding their breath at functional residual capacity (FRC) and with their glottis closed at total lung capacity (TLC), were obtained from volumetric X-ray computed tomographical images. The orientation of planes that best fit the data for each rib at each lung volume and the circular arcs that fit the points in the planes of the ribs were determined, and average values of these geometrical parameters for ribs 3-7 are reported. The planes of the ribs at TLC can be described as displaced from the planes at FRC by a rotation about an axis that passes near the spine. The pump handle and bucket handle components of rotation are 11 and 13 degrees, respectively, for rib 3 and both decrease with increasing rib number to 7 and 10 degrees at rib 7. The angles between the axes of rotation and the midplane are approximately 35 degrees for all 5 ribs. The radii of the circular arcs fit to the data at TLC are slightly larger than those at FRC, and this suggests that there is a small component of rotation normal to the plane of the rib.  相似文献

This paper describes a limited computer-analyzed kinematic model of the rib cage that can be adapted to individual subjects. Also described is its validation and use in assessing the changes in chest wall shape after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery in 12 patients. The positions of a small number of anatomic locations on the thoracic spine, ribs, manubrium, and sternum are measured from lateral and posterior-anterior chest radiographs. The computer program puts these two views together removing the magnification and reconstructs any missing points to give a three-dimensional picture of the rib cage to which mathematical models of the bones are scaled. The patients had chest radiographs taken at total lung capacity (TLC) and residual volume (RV) to investigate the source of the restrictive ventilatory defect that follows CABG. The predictions from the model were tested by comparing full-sized computer plots with the actual chest radiographs. The estimates of the bony structures were accurate to +/- 3 degrees for orientations and +/- 6 mm for positions. We found reduced rib motion both "pump-handle" (theta) and "bucket handle" (psi) going from theta, psi left, psi right = 9 degrees, 10 degrees, 14 degrees to 4 degrees, 10 degrees, 9 degrees, respectively, after surgery with P less than 0.025, 0.42, 0.07. The angles were measured from the horizontal and increased caudally. There was also reduction in the range of angles subtended by the arc of the thoracic vertebrae between TLC and RV, which went from 12 degrees to -1 degrees (P less than 0.015). These data explain the fall in lung volumes that follow CABG and provide insight into the contribution made by the ribs and spine in full inspiration and full expiration.  相似文献

An earlier model for the study of rib cage mechanics was modified so that rib deformity in scoliosis could be better represented. The rigid ribs of that model were replaced by five-segment deformable ribs. Literature data on cadaver rib mechanical behavior were used to assign stiffnesses to the new individual model ribs so that experimental and model rib deflections agreed. Shear and tension/compression stiffnesses had little effect on individual rib deformation, but bending stiffnesses had a major effect. Level-to-level differences in mechanical behavior could be explained almost exclusively by level to level differences in the rib shape. The model ribs were then assembled into a whole rib cage. Computer simulations of whole rib cage behaviors, both in vivo and in vitro, showed a reasonable agreement with the measured behaviors. The model was used to study rib cage mechanics in two scolioses, one with a 43 degrees and the other with a 70 degrees Cobb angle. Scoliotic rib cage deformities were quantified by parameters measuring the rib cage lateral offset, rib cage axial rotation, rib cage volume and rib distortion. Rib distortion was quantified both in best-fit and simulated computer tomography (CT) scan planes. Model rib distortion was much smaller in best-fit planes than in CT planes. The total rib cage volume changed little in the presence of the scolioses, but it became asymmetrically distributed.  相似文献

The monotypic Dickinsia Franch. is misplaced in its current position in the tribe Hydrocotyleae and is transferred to the tribe Mulineae. Its mericarps are strongly dorsally compressed and the lateral ribs of each mericarp are much more prominent than the dorsal rib. The carpophore is free. These characters are typical for genera of the Mulineae but are obviously different from other genera of Hydrocotyleae, which all have laterally compressed mericarps, dorsal ribs which are more expanded than the lateral ribs and an absence of free carpophores.  相似文献

To investigate the action of the neck accessory muscles on the rib cage, we stimulated the sternocleidomastoid and the scalenus muscles separately in supine anesthetized dogs. Hooks screwed into the sternum and ribs were used to measure their axial displacements and the changes in anteroposterior (AP) and transverse (T) diameters of the rib cage. We found that the sternocleidomastoid and scalenus muscles, when they contract alone, cause a large axial displacement of the sternum and the ribs in a cephalad direction and expand the rib cage along both its AP and T diameters. Opening the abdomen increased the cephalad displacement of the ribs and the expansion of the lower rib cage, particularly along its T diameter, but reduced the increase in lung volume. These experiments indicate 1) that the action of the sternocleidomastoid and scalenus muscles on the rib cage is essentially the consequence of a rotation of the ribs' neck axes, resulting from the cephalad displacement of the ribs, and 2) that the fall in abdominal pressure, almost certainly by acting through the zone of apposition of the diaphragm to the rib cage, has a deflationary action on the lower rib cage, more markedly so on its lateral than its anterior wall. The experiments also suggest that the fall in abdominal pressure prevents the diaphragm from moving cephalad and aids the neck accessory muscles in inflating the lungs.  相似文献

Subject-specific three-dimensional (3D) reconstructions of the ribs can be obtained from biplanar X-rays. The goal of this study was to evaluate the accuracy and the inter-observer reproducibility of this technique in comparison to CT-scan reconstructions. CT scans and biplanar X-rays were obtained from 50 ribs (from three cadaveric rib cages). Three experienced experimenters reconstructed each rib from biplanar X-rays. Morphometric parameters were then computed from the rib midlines. Differences were computed between parameters obtained from the 3D reconstructions based on biplanar X-rays and from CT scans. The accuracy was computed as the mean of this difference for the 50 ribs from all three experimenters. The inter-observer variability was assessed using the coefficient of variation (CV) between the three observers. The CT-scan reconstructions were considered to be the gold standard in spite of their limitations for rib reconstructions. According to the different linear parameters, the accuracy of the reconstructions was found to be between -6mm (-2%) and 3mm, (4%). The accuracy of the current method was close to that of CT-scan reconstructions. The inter-observer variability was between 3% and 6%. Frontal and lateral X-rays are commonly obtained clinically, so 3D reconstructions can be used without increased radiation exposure to the patient.  相似文献

Neither kinematic nor stiffness properties of the rib cage during thoracic spinal motion were investigated in previous studies, while being essential for the accurate validation of numerical models of the whole thorax. The aim of this in vitro study therefore was to quantify the kinematics and elastostatics of the human rib cage under defined boundary conditions. Eight fresh frozen human thoracic spine specimens (C7-L1, median age 55 years, ranging from 40 to 60 years) including entire rib cages were loaded quasi-statically in flexion/extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation using pure moments of 5 Nm. Relative motions of ribs, thoracic vertebrae, and sternal structures as well as strains on the ribs were measured using optical motion tracking of 150 reflective markers per specimen, while specimens were loaded displacement-controlled with a constant rate of 1°/s for 3.5 cycles. The third full cycle was used to determine relative angles and strains at full loading of the spine for all motion directions. Largest relative angles were found in the main loading directions with only small motions at the mid-thoracic levels. Highest strains of the intercostal spaces were detected in the anterior section of the lowest fourth of the rib cage, showing compressions and elongations of more than 10% in all spinal motion planes. Elastostatic rib deformation was generally less than 1%. Rib-sternum relative motions exhibited complex motion patterns, overall showing relative angles below 2°. The results indicate that rib cage structures are not macroscopically deformed during spinal motion, but exhibit characteristic reproducible kinematics patterns.  相似文献

Electron microscopic observations of the endosperm of tomato ( Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) seeds revealed that changes in the cell wall structures along with the vacuolation of protein bodies occurred in the micropylar portion of the endosperm prior to germination. No changes were detected at that time in the rest of the endosperm. Endo‐β‐mannanase activity was restricted to the micropylar region of the endosperm prior to germination. Cell wall digestion by this pregerminative mannanase seemed to be associated with the changes in cell wall structures occurring in the micropylar region prior to germination. The protein content in the micropylar part of the endosperm began to decrease shortly after imbibition and attained about 40% of the initial level by the time of radicle protrusion (38 h after imbibition). On the other hand, only slight changes in the content were detected in the lateral endosperm during the same time; the protein content in the lateral endosperm decreased only after germination started. In conformity with the results on protein contents, proteolytic activity began to develop first in the micropylar portion prior to germination, and then in the lateral portion after germination. Thus, the timing of the biochemical activation of the endosperm after imbibition differed between the micropylar and the lateral region. Some qualitative differences in patterns of polypeptides synthesized in vivo were detected, as analyzed by pulse‐labeling and fluorography, between the micropylar and the lateral portions of the endosperm of seeds imbibed for 25 h. This suggests that processes of the biochemical activation of the endosperm may be qualitatively, as well as quantitatively, different depending on the regions of the endosperm.  相似文献

Unlike the rest of the axial skeleton, which develops solely from somitic mesoderm, patterning of the rib cage is complicated by its derivation from two distinct tissues. The thoracic skeleton is derived from both somitic mesoderm, which forms the vertebral bodies and ribs, and from lateral plate mesoderm, which forms the sternum. By generating mouse mutants in Hox5, Hox6 and Hox9 paralogous group genes, along with a dissection of the Hox10 and Hox11 group mutants, several important conclusions regarding the nature of the ;Hox code' in rib cage and axial skeleton development are revealed. First, axial patterning is consistently coded by the unique and redundant functions of Hox paralogous groups throughout the axial skeleton. Loss of paralogous function leads to anterior homeotic transformations of colinear regions throughout the somite-derived axial skeleton. In the thoracic region, Hox genes pattern the lateral plate-derived sternum in a non-colinear manner, independent from the patterning of the somite-derived vertebrae and vertebral ribs. Finally, between adjacent sets of paralogous mutants, the regions of vertebral phenotypes overlap considerably; however, each paralogous group imparts unique morphologies within these regions. In all cases examined, the next-most posterior Hox paralogous group does not prevent the function of the more-anterior Hox group in axial patterning. Thus, the ;Hox code' in somitic mesoderm is the result of the distinct, graded effects of two or more Hox paralogous groups functioning in any anteroposterior location.  相似文献

Projections of different parts of the orbito-frontal cortex, the basal temporal cortex, and the hippocampus on hypothalamic nuclei were studied by recording focal responses in acute experiments on cats anesthetized with pentobarbital and chloralose. The proreal gyrus was shown to have local projections in the latero-dorsal zones of the preoptic region, in the rostral parts of the medial forebrain bundle, and also in the region of the lateral and posterior hypothalamus with the mammillary bodies. The orbital gyrus projects mainly to the latero-dorsal portions of the forebrain bundle, the latero-ventral part of the preoptic region, and the region of the lateral and latero-dorsal hypothalamic nuclei; projections from the orbital gyrus are relatively diffuse in character. The basal temporal cortex has diffuse projections in the central part of the preoptic region, in the latero-ventral parts of the medial forebrain bundle, and in the lateral mammillary body. No marked foci of activity were found in the hypothalamic structures during hippocampal stimulation. Diffuse projections of the hippocampus were traced in the ventral part of the preoptic region and the ventral regions of the medial forebrain bundle, and also in the lateral hypothalamus and in the lateral mammillary nucleus.A. 大丽轮枝菌Verticillium dahliae是一种土传性植物病原真菌,可侵染660多种植物,引发黄萎病。微菌核是大丽轮枝菌在侵染后期形成的特殊休眠结构,可在土壤中存活14年,是黄萎病的主要初侵染来源。本研究在前期大丽轮枝菌萌发与休眠微菌核转录组分析的基础上,选择微菌核休眠状态高表达的VdToxD1VdToxD3基因进行功能研究。结果发现,VdToxD1VdToxD3敲除突变体菌株的微菌核萌发率分别为87.3%和86.0%,显著高于野生型菌株的64.0%;负调控微菌核萌发的转录因子VdCrz1与VdToxD1上游的-937 bp到-349 bp中的特定基序结合,与VdToxD3上游的-752 bp到-496 bp中的特定基序结合,结合位点均位于2个基因的启动子区。  相似文献

Suture techniques for reshaping the nasal tip have been in use for many decades. However, the past two decades have been the most influential in the advancement of the procedures commonly used today. This report details the origin of the major tip suture techniques and tracks their evolution through the years. The early techniques in tip rhinoplasty share a basic principle: the sacrifice of lateral crus integrity to augment the middle and medial crural cartilage to gain tip projection and height. These techniques often disrupt the support mechanisms of the tip lobule, leading to undesirable postoperative results, including supratip fullness, tip asymmetry, tip drop, and an overoperated appearance. Modern nasal tip surgery is founded on the philosophy that suture placement does not simply secure partially excised sections of alar cartilage; rather it aims to directly reshape and reposition the various nasal tip components. The principal suturing methods available in the repertoire of today's rhinoplasty surgeon are the medial crural suture, the middle crura suture, the interdomal suture, the transdomal suture, the lateral crura suture, the medial crura anchor suture, the tip rotation suture, the medial crura footplate suture, and the lateral crura convexity control suture. This report acknowledges past contributions to nasal tip surgery and looks at the recent evolution of techniques commonly used today.  相似文献

Freshly harvested seeds of Arabidopsis thaliana, Columbia (Col) accession were dormant when imbibed at 25°C in the dark. Their dormancy was alleviated by continuous light during imbibition or by 5 weeks of storage at 20°C (after-ripening). We investigated the possible role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the regulation of Col seed dormancy. After 24 h of imbibition at 25°C, non-dormant seeds produced more ROS than dormant seeds, and their catalase activity was lower. In situ ROS localization revealed that germination was associated with an accumulation of superoxide and hydrogen peroxide in the radicle. ROS production was temporally and spatially regulated: ROS were first localized within the cytoplasm upon imbibition of non-dormant seeds, then in the nucleus and finally in the cell wall, which suggests that ROS play different roles during germination. Imbibition of dormant and non-dormant seeds in the presence of ROS scavengers or donors, which inhibited or stimulated germination, respectively, confirmed the role of ROS in germination. Freshly harvested seeds of the mutants defective in catalase (cat2-1) and vitamin E (vte1-1) did not display dormancy; however, seeds of the NADPH oxidase mutants (rbohD) were deeply dormant. Expression of a set of genes related to dormancy upon imbibition in the cat2-1 and vet1-1 seeds revealed that their non-dormant phenotype was probably not related to ABA or gibberellin metabolism, but suggested that ROS could trigger germination through gibberellin signaling activation.  相似文献
