Objective:

Protein leverage plays a role in driving increased energy intakes that may promote weight gain. The influence of the protein to carbohydrate ratio (P:C) in diets of C57BL/6J mice on total energy intake, fat storage, and thermogenesis was investigated.

Design and Methods:

Male mice (9 weeks old) were provided ad libitum access to one of five isocaloric diets that differed in P:C. Food intake was recorded for 12 weeks. After 16 weeks, white adipose tissue (WAT) and brown adipose tissue (BAT) deposits were dissected, weighed, and the expression levels of key metabolic regulators were determined in BAT. In a separate cohort, body surface temperature was measured in response to 25 diets differing in protein, fat, and carbohydrate content.

Results:

Mice on low P:C diets (9:72 and 17:64) had greater total energy intake and increased WAT and BAT stores. Body surface temperature increased with total energy intake and with protein, fat, and carbohydrate, making similar contributions per kJ ingested. Expression of three key regulators of thermogenesis were downregulated in BAT in mice on the lowest P:C diet.

Conclusions:

Low‐protein diets induced sustained hyperphagia and a generalized expansion of fat stores. Increased body surface temperature on low P:C diets was consistent with diet‐induced thermogenesis (DIT) as a means to dissipate excess ingested energy on such diets, although this was not sufficient to prevent development of increased adiposity. Whether BAT was involved in DIT is not clear. Increased BAT mass on low P:C diets might suggest so, but patterns of thermogenic gene expression do not support a role for BAT in DIT, although they might reflect failure of thermogenic function with prolonged exposure to a low P:C diet.  相似文献

The effect of feeding an isocaloric and isonitrogenous trout diet that contained different levels of digestible carbohydrate (cerelose) to rainbow trout at either 10 or 15° C on liver glycogen and liver weight was determined in two fasting studies of 12 and 41 days duration. Trout fed diets with increased levels of digestible carbohydrate (HC) had significantly higher liver-body weight ratios (LW) and liver glycogen (LG) than trout reared on low digestible carbohydrate diets (HF). Both LW and LG declined in fasting trout previously fed HC diets but declined little in fasting trout previously fed HF diets. Trout reared at 10° C had higher LW and LG than trout reared at 15° C on either the HC or HF diets. During fasting, the trout reared on HC diets at 10° C required a longer period of time for the LG and LW to decline to the levels of trout reared on the low carbohydrate diets, than did trout reared on the HC diets at 15° C. The results indicate that both pre-fasting diet and water temperature can affect liver glycogen utilization and liver weight in fasting trout. Prolonged elevation of LW and LG in fasting trout could jeopardize the survival rate of stocked trout, particularly at low water temperatures.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Recent work suggests that availability and quality of forage in late summer and early autumn, a time when female ungulates face multiple energetic demands, is critical to reproduction in wild ungulates. Therefore, we examined direct links between nutritional quality of diets, body condition, and reproduction of lactating mule deer. Using captive mule deer, we tested the hypothesis that females consuming diets with lower digestible energy (DE; kJ/g) would have lower DE intake rates (DEI; MJ/day), have less body fat and muscle, have later estrus cycles, and have lower pregnancy and twinning rates. Deer fed lower DE diets had lower DEI during summer and autumn. In turn, deer with lower DEI, regardless of diet DE, had lower body mass, body fat, and muscle thickness. When nutritional quality of diets began to decline earlier in the summer, relationships between food quality, DEI, and body condition were stronger. Although DEI did not influence estrus date for deer that became pregnant before 21 December, deer with lower DEI had a lower probability of becoming pregnant and had a lower probability of producing twins. Measures of body condition in October (i.e., body mass, body fat, and muscle depth) predicted pregnancy and twinning rates in mule deer. Serum concentration of hormones leptin and Insulin Growth Factor 1 were not good predictors of body condition or reproduction. These findings suggest that managers concerned with productivity of mule deer populations should consider focusing on assessing and improving quality of forage available in summer and autumn.  相似文献

Ghrelin, macronutrient intake and dietary preferences in long-evans rats   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6  
Ghrelin is a recently discovered peptide that is primarily produced by the stomach. As a ligand of the growth hormone (GH) secretagogue (GHS) receptor, it stimulates GH secretion but it also stimulates feeding and has adipogenic effects in rodents. Although its circulating levels are modulated by fasting and refeeding, its relationship with diet composition is not known. In the present paper, we measured plasma ghrelin as well as two important hormones (leptin and insulin) in Long-Evans rats placed in two different feeding situations, e.g., either with imposed diets or with food choice. In the first case, the rats were fed unbalanced diets (either high-carbohydrate (HC) or high-fat (HF) diets) for 14 weeks, whereas in the second situation, they had the choice between these 2 diets for 2 weeks and were selected for their fat or carbohydrate preference. The intake of the HF diet for 14 weeks was associated with lower levels of ghrelin (-30% vs control diet; P < 0.01). These levels increased when the percentage of carbohydrate in the diet increased (+26 to +42% vs control diet; P < 0.01 or less). Ghrelin was inversely correlated with plasma leptin (r = -0.55; P < 0.003) and blood glucose (r = -0.58; P < 0.001) as well as with body weight (r = -0.63; P < 0.0001) and body fat content estimated by the sampling of specific fat pads (r = -0.62; P < 0.0001). In the food choice experiment, fat-preferring rats had plasma ghrelin levels lower than the carbohydrate-preferring rats (-33%; P < 0.0002). Ghrelin secretion was therefore very sensitive to the diet composition. Its down-regulation by fat ingestion might serve as a counterregulatory mechanism to limit the development of dietary-induced adiposity. Ghrelin may signal when a high calorie diet is ingested.  相似文献

We examined dietary self‐selection and rules of compromise for protein (P) and digestible carbohydrate (C) intake by fifth‐instar Vanessa cardui L. (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Nymphalini). We presented six fat‐free diet pairs to larvae in a choice trial to determine the ‘intake target’. In addition, we fed larvae seven fat‐free single diets differing in dietary nutrient ratio in no‐choice trials to determine the rules of compromise they exhibit when constrained to a singular, sub‐optimal dietary source. In choice trials, caterpillars regulated nutrient intake to a ratio of 1 protein to 1.09 carbohydrate (1P:1.09C), exhibiting tighter regulation of protein than of carbohydrate. Furthermore, larvae from different diet pair treatments did not differ in pupal mass or stadium duration. In no‐choice experiments, larvae reduced consumption on increasingly protein‐biased diets and increased consumption on increasingly carbohydrate‐biased diets, relative to a 1P:1C ratio diet. Differences in carbohydrate consumption were much greater between no‐choice treatments than differences in protein consumption. Dietary nutrient ratio affected pupal mass when accounting for initial larval mass. Pupal mass decreased as nutrient ratio was shifted off of 1P:1C, but to a greater extent when the ratio was skewed toward carbohydrate. Stadium duration increased as nutrient ratio diverged from 1P:1C, being more pronounced when shifted toward carbohydrate than toward protein. Regulation to near 1P:1C is consistent with results found for other Lepidoptera, and the rule of compromise exhibited by V. cardui is consistent with that expected for a generalist herbivore.  相似文献

The effect of the major dietary energy source (fat or carbohydrate) on some of the adaptations to physical training, particularly body composition and tissue glycogen concentrations, were studied in growing male Wistar rats. Resting liver glycogen concentrations were lower in both trained and sedentary rats fed a high fat diet compared to corresponding rats fed a high carbohydrate (low fat) diet. Trained rats on both diets had higher liver glycogen levels than corresponding sedentary controls. Resting gastrocnemius muscle glycogen concentrations were not influenced by diet or training. Rates of liver and muscle glycogen depletion during a 60-min swim were lower in trained rats but were not influenced by diet. Significant interactions were noted between the dietary energy source and exercise training with respect to body weight gain, body fat content, liver weight and liver glycogen concentrations.  相似文献

We fed prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster) rat chow diluted with variable amounts of -cellulose to determine 1) how much fiber the voles could tolerate in their diet; 2) changes in food intake and digestibility of dry matter and of fiber; 3) the extent to which voles utilized fiber as an energy source; and 4) whether any of these variables differed between groups of animals maintained at 5 or 22°C. Fiber content of the diets ranged from 20 to 84%. Animals held at 5°C maintained body mass through a diet containing 69% fiber, while animals held at 22°C maintained body mass through the 84% fiber diet. Dry matter intake increased with fiber level from 9.3 to 15.0 g·day-1 for animals at 5°C and from 5.6 to 14.0 g·day-1 for animals at 22°C; intake on the highest fiber diet eaten by either group was not different. Dry matter digestibility decreased significantly as the fiber in the diets increased, but was not affected by temperature treatments. Digestible dry matter intake for each group remained constant regardless of diet quality, but on each diet digestible dry matter intake for animals at 5°C was significantly higher than that of the animals held at 22°C. Digestibility of the fiber portion of the experimental diets remained constant as food quality decreased, so the percent of daily energy need met by fiber utilization increased with higher food intake. A long-term raising study was carried out on male F344/DuCrj rats with three low protein (Crude Protein (CP); 14.5, 11.5, 8.5%) and low energy (Digestible Energy (DE); 2.0 kcal/g) diets from 4 to 104 weeks of age. In rats fed the 8.5% CP diet, body weight and digestible crude protein (DCP) consumption at 10 weeks of age were lower (P < 0.05) but the body weight at 50 weeks of age was higher (P < 0.05) than in the other groups. In rats fed the 8.5% CP diet the crude fat digestibility was higher (P < 0.05), and the CP/nitrogen-corrected metabolizable energy (MEn) ratio was low. On the other hand, the mean survival time at 80 weeks of age was shorter in rats fed the 8.5% CP diet (P < 0.05).  相似文献

We previously reported differences in protein and carbohydrate selection patterns in post-weanling rats fed beef tallow or soybean oil-based diets. Two experiments were designed to determine the characteristic of the dietary fat which mediates the selection behavior. For each experiment, dietary fat was 20% (w/w) of diets and fatty acid profiles were obtained by blending fat sources. Rats were randomly assigned to diets (24% protein, 40% carbohydrate) which varied only in fatty acid composition. After 2 weeks, rats selected from 2 diets with the fat composition previously fed, but varying in their protein and carbohydrate composition (55% protein, 4% carbohydrate and 5% protein, 61% carbohydrate). Experiment 1 was designed to test the effect of relative (omega 6: omega 3 ratios of 1 and 20) and absolute (15% or 4% omega 6, 0.7% or 0.2% omega 3) differences in essential fatty acids on macronutrient selection patterns. Differences in dietary essential fatty acids had no effect on energy intake or the proportion of energy consumed as protein and carbohydrate. Experiment 2 examined the effect of differences in the level of saturated fat (3-10% diet (w/w] on protein and carbohydrate selection. Animals selecting from diets with higher levels of saturated fat consumed more energy as protein and less as carbohydrate than rats selecting from diets with lower levels of saturated fat (p less than 0.0001). Regression analysis was used to examine the relationship between percent protein or carbohydrate energy and classes of dietary fat. The strongest relationship existed between percent dietary saturated fat and percent protein or carbohydrate energy (p less than 0.0001). Polyunsaturated:saturated fat ratio was also weakly associated with percent protein and carbohydrate energy (p less than 0.05). Polyunsaturated, monounsaturated, omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids were not significantly related to percent protein or carbohydrate energy. These results indicated that protein and carbohydrate selection patterns are altered in response to qualitatively different dietary fatty acids, and that the amount of saturated fat in the diet is the important characteristic of dietary fat mediating the behavioral alteration.  相似文献

Summary Two fish species (rainbow trout and common carp) that differ in natural diet also exhibit differences in the adaptive flexibility of their intestinal nutrient transport mechanisms in response to changes in dietary nutrient composition. When carp ingested a feed that was 24% glucose by weight, there was an increase in both the intestinal length and rates of nutrient absorption, particularly for glucose, when compared to carp fed an isonitrogenous diet devoid of digestible carbohydrate. As a result, the intestine's uptake capacity (nmol of glucose and proline absorbed per min per g body weight) was higher in carp fed the 24% glucose feed. Due to the greater increase in glucose uptake, the ratio of glucose uptake relative to proline (G/P ratio) was higher in carp fed the 24% glucose. Thus, carp are able to adapt to the quantity, and apparently also to the type, of digestible carbohydrate in the diet. In contrast, glucose uptake by trout was unresponsive to the quantity of dietary carbohydrate. Insted, the elevated glucose paradoxically resulted in a greater uptake capacity for proline and a lower G/P ratio. Whole body glucose disposal and skeletal muscle hexokinase, glycogen synthase (GS), pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH), and PDH kinase (PDK) activities were measured in aerobically trained men after a standardized control diet (Con; 51% carbohydrate, 29% fat, and 20% protein of total energy intake) and a 56-h eucaloric, high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet (HF/LC; 5% carbohydrate, 73% fat, and 22% protein). An oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT; 1 g/kg) was administered after the Con and HF/LC diets with vastus lateralis muscle biopsies sampled pre-OGTT and 75 min after ingestion of the oral glucose load. The 90-min area under the blood glucose and plasma insulin concentration vs. time curves increased by 2-fold and 1.25-fold, respectively, after the HF/LC diet. The pre-OGTT fraction of GS in its active form and the maximal activity of hexokinase were not affected by the HF/LC diet. However, the HF/LC diet increased PDK activity (0.19 +/- 0.05 vs. 0.08 +/- 0.02 min(-1)) and decreased PDH activation (0.38 +/- 0.08 vs. 0.79 +/- 0.10 mmol acetyl-CoA.kg wet muscle(-1).min(-1)) before the OGTT vs. Con. During the OGTT, GS and PDH activation increased by the same magnitude in both diets, such that PDH activation remained lower during the HF/LC OGTT (0.60 +/- 0.11 vs. 1.04 +/- 0.09 mmol acetyl-CoA.kg(-1).min(-1)). These data demonstrate that the decreased glucose disposal during the OGTT after the 56-h HF/LC diet was in part related to decreased oxidative carbohydrate disposal in skeletal muscle and not to decreased glycogen storage. The rapid increase in PDK activity during the HF/LC diet appeared to account for the reduced potential for oxidative carbohydrate disposal.  相似文献

There is evidence from studies in animals that the effects of both fat and CCK on gastrointestinal function and energy intake are attenuated by consumption of a high-fat diet. In humans, the effects of exogenous CCK-8 on antropyloroduodenal motility, plasma CCK, peptide YY (PYY), and ghrelin concentrations, appetite, and energy intake are attenuated by a high-fat diet. Ten healthy lean males consumed isocaloric diets (~15,400 kJ per day), containing either 44% (high-fat, HF) or 9% (low-fat, LF) fat, for 21 days in single-blind, randomized, cross-over fashion. Immediately following each diet (i.e., on day 22), subjects received a 45-min intravenous infusion of CCK-8 (2 ng.kg(-1).min(-1)), and effects on antropyloroduodenal motility, plasma CCK, PYY, ghrelin concentrations, hunger, and fullness were determined. Thirty minutes after commencement of the infusion, subjects were offered a buffet-style meal, from which energy intake (in kilojoules) was quantified. Body weight was unaffected by the diets. Fasting CCK (P < 0.05), but not PYY and ghrelin, concentrations were greater following the HF, compared with the LF, diet. Infusion of CCK-8 stimulated pyloric pressures (P < 0.01) and suppressed antral and duodenal pressures (P < 0.05), with no difference between the diets. Energy intake also did not differ between the diets. Short-term consumption of a HF diet increases fasting plasma CCK concentrations but does not affect upper gut motility, PYY and ghrelin, or energy intake during CCK-8 infusion, in a dose of 2 ng.kg(-1).min(-1), in healthy males.  相似文献

Estimating the energy content is the first step in diet formulation, as it determines the amount of food eaten and hence the concentration of nutrients required to meet the animal's requirements. Additionally, being able to estimate the energy content of a diet empirically known to maintain body condition in an animal will facilitate an estimation of maintenance energy requirements. We collated data on nutrient composition of diets fed to captive wild canids, felids, hyenids, mustelids, pinnipeds, and ursids and the digestibility coefficients from the literature (45 species, 74 publications) to test whether differences in protein and fat digestibility could be detected between species groups, and whether approaches suggested for the estimation of dietary metabolizable energy (ME) content in domestic carnivores (NRC [2006] Nutrient requirements of dogs and cats. Washington, DC: National Academy Press.) can be applied to wild carnivores as well. Regressions of digestible protein or fat content vs. the crude protein (CP) or fat content indicated no relevant differences in the digestive physiology between the carnivore groups. For diets based on raw meat, fish, or whole prey, applying the calculation of ME using “Atwater factors” (16.7 kJ/g CP; 16.7 kJ/g nitrogen‐free extracts; 37.7 kJ/g crude fat) provided estimates that compared well to experimental results. This study suggests that ME estimation in such diets is feasible without additional digestion trials. For comparative nutrition research, the study implicates that highly digestible diets typically fed in zoos offer little potential to elucidate differences between species or carnivore groups, but research on diets with higher proportions of difficult‐to‐digest components (fiber, connective tissues) is lacking.   • 1 The chief objectives were to determine the daily energy intake and growth of piscivorous brown trout (Salmo trutta), and to compare the observed values with those expected from models developed previously for brown trout feeding on freshwater invertebrates. Energy budgets for individual fish were obtained from experiments with 40 trout (initial live weight 250–318 g) bred from wild parents, and kept at five constant temperatures (5, 10, 13, 15, 18 °C) and 100% oxygen saturation. Each trout was fed to satiation on freshly killed sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) over a period of 42 days.
  • 2 Energy intake (CIN cal day‐1) and growth (CG cal day‐1) were measured directly and energy losses (CQ cal day‐1) were estimated by difference (CQ = CINCG). All three variables increased with temperature. A model previously used to predict the daily energy intake (CIN(INV)) of trout feeding to satiation on invertebrates was adapted, by changing only one parameter, to provide an excellent model (R2 = 0.998) for predicting the mean daily energy intake (CIN(ST)) for the piscivorous trout. Values of CIN(ST) were 58% (range 48–67%) higher than those for CIN(INV). A simple model was also developed to estimate mean daily energy losses for piscivorous trout (R2 = 0.999). Both models were combined to provide excellent estimates of the daily energy gain (growth) of the piscivorous trout, and this was about three times that for trout feeding on invertebrates. The optimum temperature for maximum growth in energy terms increased from 13.9 °C for trout feeding on invertebrates to 17.0 °C (range 16.6–17.4 °C) for piscivorous trout.
  • 3 The models are basically an extension of those developed for trout feeding on invertebrates. They show clearly how energy intake, growth, and the optimum temperature for growth increase markedly when trout change their diet from invertebrates to fish. The implications of this are discussed and it is shown that, in theory, these increases should continue if a more energy‐rich diet was utilised by the trout.

A total of four diets with different carbohydrate composition were investigated in a 4×4 Latin square design experiment with four Norwegian Coldblooded trotter horses. The objective of the present study was to increase the fermentable fibre content and reduce the starch intake of the total ration obtained by partly substituting mature hay and barley with sugar beet pulp (SBP), a soluble fibre source. The diets investigated were hay only (HAY), hay (85% of dry matter intake (DMI)) and molassed SBP (15% of DMI) (SBP), hay (68% of DMI) and barley (32% of DMI) (BAR), and hay (68% of DMI), barley (26% of DMI) and SBP (6% of DMI) (BAR+SBP). The feeding level was 18.5, 17.3, 15.7 and 15.7 g DM/kg BW per day for the HAY, SBP, BAR and BAR+SBP diets, respectively. Each diet was fed for 18 days followed by 10 days of data collection, where apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD), total mean retention time (TMRT) of ytterbium-labelled hay, water balance, digestible energy (DE) intake and nitrogen balance were measured. An enzymatic chemical dietary fibre (DF) method was used to get detailed information on the composition and ATTD of the fibre fraction. Inclusion of SBP in the diet increased the ATTD of the constituent sugars galactose and arabinose (P<0.01). Feeding the HAY and SBP diets resulted in a lower TMRT owing to a higher DF intake than the BAR and BAR+SBP diets (P<0.01). There was no difference in water intake between HAY and SBP, but faecal dry matter was lower for HAY than the other diets (P=0.017), indicating that water was more tightly bound to fibre in the HAY diet. The diets were iso-energetic and provided enough DE and protein for light to moderate exercise for a 550 kg horse. In conclusion, this study showed that the DF intake had a larger effect on TMRT than partly substituting hay or barley with SBP, and that highly fermentable pectin-rich soluble DF from SBP maintains high nutrient utilization in horses.  相似文献

The effects of three isoenergetic diets on metabolic and appetite responses to prolonged intermittent walking were investigated. Eight men undertook three 450-min walks at intensities varying between 25-30 and 50-55% of maximal O2 uptake. In a balanced design, the subjects were given breakfast, snacks, and lunch containing total carbohydrate (CHO), protein (P), and fat (F) in the following amounts (g/70 kg body mass): mixed diet, 302 CHO, 50 P, 84 F; high-CHO diet, 438 CHO, 46 P, 35 F; high-fat diet, 63 CHO, 44 P, 196 F. Substrate balance was calculated by indirect calorimetry over the 450-min exercise period. Blood samples were taken before exercise and every 45 min during the exercise period. The high-fat diet resulted in a negative total CHO balance (-140 +/- 1 g) and a lower negative fat balance (-110 +/- 33 g) than the other two diets (P < 0.05). Plasma glucagon, nonesterified fatty acids, glycerol, and 3-hydroxybutyrate were higher with the high-fat diet (P < 0.05 vs. high CHO), whereas plasma insulin was lower after high fat (P < 0.05 vs. mixed and high CHO). Subjective ratings of fatigue and appetite showed no differences between the three trials. Although diet influenced the degree of total CHO and fat oxidation, fat was the main source of energy in all trials.  相似文献

A 12‐week feeding trial was conducted to determine the optimum dietary protein requirement of brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis, at 15 and 19°C. Twelve iso‐energetic (22 MJ · kg?1) and iso‐lipidic (23%) diets (36–58% protein at 2% increments) were prepared. Fish (29.45 ± 3.25 g · fish?1) were fed 2% of body weight per day, divided into two equal rations. The specific growth rate (SGR, % · day?1), feed efficiency ratio (FER), productive protein value (PPV), productive lipid value (PLV) and productive energy value (PEV), apparent digestibility of diet (ADDM) and protein (ADCP) were significantly higher at optimum temperature (15°C). Increasing PPV with increasing dietary carbohydrate and with decreasing dietary protein content was due to the protein‐sparing effect of carbohydrates. A piecewise regression (broken line) model between the SGR and digestible dietary protein level revealed that the digestible dietary protein requirement of brook trout was 44 and 40% at 15 and 19°C, respectively. When PPV (digestible protein retention basis) was modelled with a broken line, the digestible protein requirement of brook trout was 39 and 35% at 15 and 19°C, respectively. A reduction in dietary protein content balanced by increased gelatinised carbohydrate might be useful for improving the protein utilization efficiency for growth at 15 and 19°C; however, the growth and feed efficiency was lower at the elevated temperature.  相似文献

We demonstrated that female endurance athletes did not increase their muscle glycogen concentration after an increase in the dietary carbohydrate intake (58 --> 74%), whereas men did (Tarnopolsky MA, SA Atkinson, SM Phillips, and JD McDougall, J Appl Physiol 78: 1360-1368, 1995). This may have been related to a lower energy or carbohydrate intake by the women or due to an inherent gender difference in glycogen storage capacity. We examined whether well-trained men (n = 6) and women (n = 6) increased muscle glycogen concentration after an increase in both the relative (58 --> 75%) and absolute energy and carbohydrate intake and whether potential gender differences were related to muscle hexokinase enzyme activity. Subjects were randomly allocated to three diets [Hab, habitual; CHO, high carbohydrate (75%); and CHO + E, extra energy + CHO ( upward arrow~34%)] for a 4-day period before a muscle biopsy for analysis of total and pro- and macroglycogen and hexokinase activity. Total glycogen concentration was higher for the men on the CHO and CHO + E trials compared with Hab (P < 0.05), whereas women increased only on the CHO + E trial compared with Hab (P < 0.05). There were no gender differences in the proportion of pro- and macroglycogen or hexokinase activity. A low energy intake may explain the previously reported lower capacity for women to glycogen load compared with men.  相似文献

The ability of the growing kitten to digest protein, fat, carbohydrate, dry-matter and energy were assessed. Kittens were divided into two groups; one group was fed a wet diet, the other a dry diet. Both groups were allowed ad libitum access to food. Apparent digestibility of the two diets, and kitten bodyweights were measured over a 24-week period. There were no significant differences in mean bodyweight between the two groups. Digestible energy intake of the kittens decreased with increased age; regression analysis of the data generated two fitted models which appeared to accurately predict the digestible energy intake between 39 and 41 weeks of age. There was a significant (P < 0.05) effect of diet on the apparent digestibility of protein, organic-matter and dry-matter. Age had a significant (P < 0.05) effect on the apparent digestibility of all the parameters measured. Newman-Keuls multiple range tests showed that apparent digestibility of carbohydrate, organic-matter and total energy significantly (P < 0.05) increased in kittens older than 19 weeks. This suggests that the digestive capacity of the younger cat may be affected by the physiological development of the gut, and dietary induced enzyme modulation.  相似文献

Objective: The fat content of a diet has been shown to affect total energy intake, but controlled feeding trials have only compared very high (40% of total calories) fat diets with very low (20% of total calories) fat diets. This study was designed to measure accurately the voluntary food and energy intake over a range of typical intake for dietary fat. Methods and Procedures: Twenty‐two non‐obese subjects were studied for 4 days on each of three diets, which included core foods designed to contain 26, 34, and 40% fat, respectively of total calories and ad lib buffet foods of similar fat content. All diets were matched for determinants of energy density except dietary fat. Subjects consumed two meals/day in an inpatient unit and were provided the third meal and snack foods while on each diet. All food provided and not eaten was measured by research staff. Results: Voluntary energy intake increased significantly as dietary fat content increased (P = 0.008). On the 26% dietary fat treatment, subjects consumed 23.8% dietary fat (core and ad lib foods combined) and 2,748 ± 741 kcal/day (mean ± s.d.); at 34% dietary fat, subjects consumed 32.7% fat and 2,983 ± 886 kcal/day; and at 40% dietary fat subjects consumed 38.1% fat and 3,018 ± 963 kcal/day. Discussion: These results show that energy intake increases as dietary fat content increases across the usual range of dietary fat consumed in the United States. Even small reductions in dietary fat could help in lowering total energy intake and reducing weight gain in the population.  相似文献
