In a series of dawn-to-dusk studies, we examined the natureand accessibility of nectar rewards for pollinating insectsby monitoring insect visits and the secretion rate and standingcrop of nectar in the British native plant species Salvia pratensis,Stachys palustris, S. officinalis, Lythrum salicaria, Linariavulgaris, the non-native Calendula officinalis, Petunia x hybrida,Salvia splendens, and the possibly introduced Saponaria officinalis. We also compared single with double variants ofLotus corniculatus, Saponaria officinalis, Petunia x hybrida andCalendula officinalis. All the British species studied are nectar-rich and are recommendedfor pollinator-friendly gardens. They showed maximal secretionrates of about 10–90 µg sugar per flower h-1, andmost had mean standing crops of about 5–60 µg sugarper flower. In all British species studied, the corolla wasdeep enough for the relatively long-tongued bumblebee Bombuspascuorum, but the shallower flowers of Lythrum salicaria werealso much visited by shorter-tongued bees and hoverflies, aswell as by butterflies. The exotic Salvia splendens, presumablycoevolved with hummingbirds in the Neotropics, has such deepflowers that British bees cannot reach the nectar except bycrawling down the corolla. With a secretion rate approaching300 µg sugar per flower h-1and little depletion by insects,S. splendens accumulated high standing crops of nectar. S. splendens, and single and double flowers of the two probably moth-pollinatedspecies Petunia x hybrida and Saponaria officinalis, receivedfew daytime visits despite abundant nectar but Calendula waswell visited by hoverflies and bees. We compared single anddouble variants of Lotus corniculatus,Petunia x hybrida andCalendula officinalis, and also Saponaria officinalis, the lastbeing probably introduced in Britain (Stace, 1997 New floraof the British Isles. 2nd edn. Cambridge: Cambridge UniversityPress). In Petunia, Saponaria and Lotus, double flowers secretedlittle or no nectar. In Calendula, where doubling involved achange in the proportion of disc and ray florets rather thanmodification of individual flower structure, double and singlecapitula had similar standing crops of nectar. Except inCalendula, exotic or double flowers were little exploited by insect visitors. In the exotics, this was probably due to the absence or scarcityof coevolved pollinators, coupled, in double flowers, with theabsence of nectar. The question of whether species’ origins influence invasion outcomes has been a point of substantial debate in invasion ecology. Theoretically, colonization outcomes can be predicted based on how species’ traits interact with community filters, a process presumably blind to species’ origins. Yet, exotic plant introductions commonly result in monospecific plant densities not commonly seen in native assemblages, suggesting that exotic species may respond to community filters differently than natives. Here, we tested whether exotic and native species differed in their responses to a local community filter by examining how ant seed predation affected recruitment of eighteen native and exotic plant species in central Argentina. Ant seed predation proved to be an important local filter that strongly suppressed plant recruitment, but ants suppressed exotic recruitment far more than natives (89% of exotic species vs. 22% of natives). Seed size predicted ant impacts on recruitment independent of origins, with ant preference for smaller seeds resulting in smaller seeded plant species being heavily suppressed. The disproportionate effects of provenance arose because exotics had generally smaller seeds than natives. Exotics also exhibited greater emergence and earlier peak emergence than natives in the absence of ants. However, when ants had access to seeds, these potential advantages of exotics were negated due to the filtering bias against exotics. The differences in traits we observed between exotics and natives suggest that higher-order introduction filters or regional processes preselected for certain exotic traits that then interacted with the local seed predation filter. Our results suggest that the interactions between local filters and species traits can predict invasion outcomes, but understanding the role of provenance will require quantifying filtering processes at multiple hierarchical scales and evaluating interactions between filters.  相似文献

Vast amounts of cultivars of native plants are annually introduced into the semi-natural range of their wild relatives for re-vegetation and restoration. As cultivars are often selected towards enhanced biomass production and might transfer these traits into wild relatives by hybridization, it is suggested that cultivars and the wild × cultivar hybrids are competitively superior to their wild relatives. The release of such varieties may therefore result in unintended changes in native vegetation. In this study we examined for two species frequently used in re-vegetation (Plantago lanceolata and Lotus corniculatus) whether cultivars and artificially generated intra-specific wild × cultivar hybrids may produce a higher vegetative and generative biomass than their wilds. For that purpose a competition experiment was conducted for two growing seasons in a common garden. Every plant type was growing (a.) alone, (b.) in pairwise combination with a similar plant type and (c.) in pairwise interaction with a different plant type. When competing with wilds cultivars of both species showed larger biomass production than their wilds in the first year only and hybrids showed larger biomass production than their wild relatives in both study years. As biomass production is an important factor determining fitness and competitive ability, we conclude that cultivars and hybrids are competitively superior their wild relatives. However, cultivars of both species experienced large fitness reductions (nearly complete mortality in L. corniculatus) due to local climatic conditions. We conclude that cultivars are good competitors only as long as they are not subjected to stressful environmental factors. As hybrids seemed to inherit both the ability to cope with the local climatic conditions from their wild parents as well as the enhanced competitive strength from their cultivars, we regard them as strong competitors and assume that they are able to outperform their wilds at least over the short-term.  相似文献

Two species of crayfish were tested in the laboratory to evaluate the hypothesis that successful invaders use a broader range of chemical information than do displaced native species. The invasive species Orconectes rusticus reduced responses to food odors just as strongly when heterospecific (O. propinquus, O. virilis) alarm odors were introduced with food odors as they did when conspecific alarm odors were introduced at the same time as food odors. Individuals of the displaced native species, O. propinquus, did not reduce feeding responses as strongly when O. virilis alarm odor was introduced as with conspecific alarm odor or O. rusticus alarm odor. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that successful invaders use a wider range of information about their environment than do displaced native species.  相似文献

Contrary to Christenfeld and Hill (1995), we find that children aged 1, 3, and 5 do not appear to resemble their fathers significantly more than their mothers. We provide an explanation as to why this should be. In addition, we note that any father–child resemblance that does exist, although better than chance, is far from overwhelming.  相似文献

Trace metals from anthropogenic activities are involved in numerous health impairments and may therefore select for detoxification mechanisms or a higher tolerance. Melanin, responsible for the black and red colourations of teguments, plays a role in metal ion chelation and its synthesis is positively linked to immunity, antioxidant capacity and stress resistance due to pleiotropic effects. Therefore, we expected darker birds to (1) store higher amounts of metals in their feathers, (2) maintain lower metal concentrations in blood and (3) suffer less from metal exposure. We exposed feral pigeons (Columba livia) exhibiting various plumage darkness levels to low, but chronic, concentrations of zinc and/or lead, two of the most abundant metals in urban areas. First, we found negative and positive effects of lead and zinc, respectively, on birds' condition and reproductive parameters. Then, we observed positive relationships between plumage darkness and both zinc and lead concentrations in feathers. Interestingly, though darker adults did not maintain lower metal concentrations in blood and did not have higher fitness parameters, darker juveniles exhibited a higher survival rate than paler ones when exposed to lead. Our results show that melanin‐based plumage colouration does modulate lead effects on birds' fitness parameters but that the relationship between metals, melanin, and fitness is more complex than expected and thus stress the need for more studies.  相似文献
