We describe the first observation of parabiosis between two Attini ants (Apterostigma urichii Forel and Cyphomyrmex faunulus Wheeler) found in northern Manaus, AM, Brazil. Complete, mature colonies of both species were found in a single cavity inside
a rotten log, sharing and tending a single combined fungus garden, made up of two distinct halves, each cultivated by one
species. Workers of one species often antennated workers of the other species and showed no aggression toward each other or
toward each other’s workers, queens, or immatures. Laboratory observations suggest that immatures of both species feed on
hyphae from either half of the fungus garden. We were not able to find other parabiotic pairs involving the same species in
the same locality, although we found colonies of both species sharing trails and foraging territories.

Here we explored the potential for host shift from honeybee, Apis mellifera, colonies to bumblebee, Bombus impatiens, colonies by the small hive beetle, a nest parasite/scavenger native to sub-Saharan Africa. We investigated small hive beetle
host choice, bumblebee colony defence as well as individual defensive behaviour of honeybee and bumblebee workers. Our findings
show that in its new range in North America, bumblebees are potential alternate hosts for the small hive beetle. We found
that small hive beetles do invade bumblebee colonies and readily oviposit there. Honeybee colonies are not preferred over
bumblebee colonies. But even though bumblebees lack a co-evolutionary history with the small hive beetle, they are able to
defend their colonies against this nest intruder by removal of beetle eggs and larvae and stinging of the latter. Hence, the
observed behavioural mechanisms must be part of a generalistic defence system suitable for defence against multiple attackers.
Nevertheless, there are quantitative (worker force) and qualitative differences (hygienic behaviour) between A. mellifera and B. impatiens.

Acacia ants (Pseudomyrmex spinicola) usually prune all of the vegetation growing in the vicinity of their host plant (Acacia collinsii). This lack of branches in contact with the host tree makes the main stem of the acacia the only point of access for ants
invading the resident colony. The present study assessed whether the intrusion site affects the probability of the intruder
being detected. It also investigated whether ants that remain inactive on the main trunk base (a) are involved in defensive
duties and (b) are morphologically different from other colony members (e.g. foraging ants). In the field, intruder ants were
placed on the trunk and leaves of acacias inhabited by P. spinicola; colony members on the trunk base and the leaves were marked and monitored; and head length, head width, and thorax length
of ants that were either foraging on the leaves or immobile on the trunk were measured. P. spinicola ants found intruder ants entering their host acacia via the trunk more rapidly than those entering by means of the leaves.
Ants on the base of the trunk do not exchange tasks with foragers: between 5 and 47% of the 1063 ants originally marked on
the trunk were re-observed there, whereas only two of the 804 ants marked on the leaves were seen on the trunk. However, ants
on the trunk were similar to foragers in morphology, suggesting that defensive ants may be part of a behavioral caste.

The Afrotropical Cynipoidea are represented by 306 described species and 54 genera in four families: Cynipidae, Figitidae, Liopteridae and Ibaliidae, the latter represented by a single introduced species. Seven of these genera are only represented by undescribed species in the region. Seven new genus-level synonymies, one genus resurrected from synonymy, 54 new combinations, one combination reinstated, and one new replacement name are presented. We provide identification keys to the families, subfamilies and genera of cynipoid wasps occurring in the Afrotropical region (Africa south of the Sahara, including Madagascar and southern Arabian Peninsula). Online interactive Lucid Phoenix and Lucid matrix keys are available at: http://www.waspweb.org/Cynipoidea/Keys/index.htm. An overview of the biology and checklists of species for each genus are provided. This paper constitutes the first contributory chapter to the book on Afrotropical Hymenoptera. 相似文献

The aim of the research reported here was to determine whether 3-ethyl-4-methylpentanol, a minor but crucial component of
the sex pheromone of the North American slave-making ant species Polyergus breviceps, was also a component of the sex pheromone of the European congener Polyergus rufescens. Thus, the contents of mandibular glands of P. rufescens virgin queen were extracted and analysed. The main component of the extracts was methyl 6-methylsalicylate and 3-ethyl-4-methylpentanol
was identified as one of several minor components. Further analyses showed that the insects produce mainly the (R)-enantiomer of the alcohol. Males’ responses to various blends of methyl 6-methylsalicylate with the racemate or the pure
enantiomers of 3-ethyl-4- methylpentanol were tested in field behavioural bioassays. The data showed that blends of methyl
6- methylsalicylate and 3-ethyl-4-methylpentanol were strongly synergistic, with the most active ratios being biased toward
the first component. The addition of other minor components to the binary blend neither increased nor decreased responses
by males. Only the (R)-enantiomer of the alcohol was biologically active; its antipode did not inhibit attraction. The results are discussed in
terms of the evolution of signals, and are compared with the results previously obtained for the allopatric species Polyergus breviceps.

In social insects, workers forego reproduction in favour of foraging and other tasks to promote growth of the whole colony.
Maximising individual work effort is limited by the physical constraints on foraging outside the nest. Previous studies of
factors influencing activity in social insects suggest that light intensity, ground and air temperature, relative humidity,
solar radiation, wind speed and/or rainfall may be important. This study aimed to determine which environmental factors influence
foraging in an invasive social insect, Vespula germanica, which has been introduced to Australia, where it experiences a hotter and drier climate than in its native range. Activity
was measured in terms of foraging traffic, with nests from a range of locations being monitored. Results indicate that the
onset of rain reduces activity by approximately 30%, but foraging returns to previous levels immediately after rain stops.
Foraging time is correlated with duration of daylight, with wasp daily activity being on average 22 min longer than the time
between sunrise and sunset. Low light was found to restrict wasp activity, as were low and high temperatures. A linear mixed-effects
model developed to explain the influence of these variables on numbers of foragers was highly significant. Under hot conditions,
V. germanica individuals thermoregulate their body temperature by regurgitating water. They also use water in evaporative cooling to keep
nests at optimum temperatures. Thus, in this species, hot temperatures increase the need for water, and so populations may
be severely impacted in seasonally hot regions where water is limited.

Relatedness and genetic variability in colonies of social insects are strongly influenced by the number of queens present
and the number of matings per queen, but also by the genetic variability in the population. Thus, multiple paternity will
enhance within-colony genetic variability more strongly when the males a queen mates with are unrelated. To study the kin-structure
within colonies of the leaf-cutter ant Atta colombica and the population structure of this species around Barro Colorado Island, Panama, we developed five polymorphic microsatellite
loci with a range of three to 17 alleles in At. colombica, all of which cross-amplify in other higher attines as well. The average effective mating frequency calculated from four-locus
microsatellite genotypes was 1.89 ± 0.12 (harmonic mean ± SE) and thus slightly lower than the average observed mating frequency
of 2.50 ± 0.11 (arithmetic mean ± SE) over the 55 colonies studied, confirming former studies that utilized fewer loci. The
discrepancy between observed mating frequency and effective mating frequency is most probably due to paternity skew within
colonies. The study population proved to be genetically diverse and in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, suggesting random mating
within the study area. No population substructure was observed, neither considering nuclear (global F
ST = 0.011 ± 0.003 SE) nor mitochondrial markers (mean ΦST = 0.008). Consequently, gene flow is obviously promoted by both sexes across the range investigated here. Thus, multiple
mating and long-distance dispersal appear to be two interconnected behavioural mechanisms to create and maintain genetic diversity
in At. colombica. The advantages of this system are partly offset by paternity skew and the non-zero relatedness among colony fathers found
in the study population.

As one of the 17 megadiverse countries of the world and with four biodiversity hotspots
represented in its borders, India is home to an impressive diversity of life forms.
However, much work remains to document and catalogue the species of India and their
geographic distributions, especially for diverse invertebrate groups. In the present
study, a comprehensive and critical list of Indian ant species is provided with up-to-date
state-wise distribution. A total of 828 valid species and subspecies names belonging to
100 genera are listed from India. Potential erroneous data, misidentifications and dubious
distributional records that may exist in the literature are also identified. The present
exhaustive listing of Indian ants will provide a holistic view about diversity and
distribution and will also help to identify major undersampled areas where future sampling
and taxonomic efforts should be directed. 相似文献

Euglossa viridissima is an orchid bee that forms both solitary and multiple female nests, making it a suitable species for the study of factors
leading to diverse degrees of sociality in Euglossines. We conducted observations in eight reused nests (where a first generation
of bees had been produced) kept in artificial boxes from the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Five nests were reused (reactivated)
by a single female (SFN), two nests reused by a mother and one daughter (MFN1) and one nest reused by the mother and two daughters
(MFN2). No single nest was reactivated by unrelated females. The number of foraging trips, their duration and the duration
of cell provisioning was not different between SFN and MFN. The overall production of cells per female was not different either
between both types of nest. However, in MFN although all females did lay eggs, there was a reproductive skew in favor of the
mother (95 and 45% of the brood produced in MFN1 and MFN2 respectively). She showed reproductive control of her daughters
through oophagy and displaying threatening behavior when the daughters tried to open a cell where she had laid an egg. Brood
losses to parasites (Anthrax sp. (Bom-byliidae) and Hoplostelis bivittata (Megachilidae)) were only found in SFN which possibly reflects and advantage of MFN in this respect. Our results coupled
with other studies in Euglossa, reveal that a wide range of social behaviors occur in this genus, from solitary and communal to primitive reproductive division
of labor. Multiple factors involving different levels of pressure imposed by food availability and parasites may favor such
a diverse range of nesting behaviors. Interestingly, female associations in E. viridissima seem a result of kin selection that is enforced by coercion from mother females on their daughters. More studies are needed
to shed light upon the social organization of Euglossa and other Euglossines and on their phylogenetic relationships in order to trace the origins of eusociality in Apidae.

Life-cycle and foraging patterns of native Bombus terrestris populations were investigated at two sites in the Mediterranean region of Turkey, Phassalis (0 – 100 m above sea level [a.s.l.])
and Termessos (500 – 700 m a.s.l.). Bumble-bee activity was recorded during standard bee walks from November 2003 until the
end of October 2004, each site being visited three times every month during the one-year period. The yearly dynamics of flight,
the flowering plant species visited, and the visitation frequencies of these plants were recorded during every bee walk at
both sites. There were considerable differences between the two populations with regard to the dates when the queens emerged
from diapause (the emerging season), the timing of the appearance of sexuals (young queens and males), and the total number
of plant species visited. Bombus terrestris queens emerged from diapause in November-December at the Phassalis site (coastal area) and in February-March at the Termessos
site. The queens aestivated at the Phassalis site, whereas they hibernated at the Termessos site. Only one generation per
year was produced at each site. The duration of the queens’ diapause lasted 5 – 8 months and length of the life cycle 190
– 215 days. Native B. terrestris populations were noted to forage on 47 flowering plant species from 20 families (10 at the Phassalis site and 40 at the Termessos
site) during the study period. Two of the plant species (Arbutus unedo L. and Vitex agnus-castus L.) have long flowering periods and play a crucial role in the life cycle of native B. terrestris populations. The emergence of queens at the aestivation site was synchronized with the flowering of Arbutus unedo L., while the emergence of sexuals coincided with the flowering of Vitex agnus-castus L. at both sites.

Shortleaf pine (n = 93) and loblolly pine (n = 112) trees representing 22 seed sources or 16 physiographic populations were sampled from Southwide Southern Pine Seed
Source Study plantings located in Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Mississippi. The sampled trees were grown from shortleaf pine and
loblolly pine seeds formed in 1951 and 1952, prior to the start of intensive forest management across their native ranges.
Amplification fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) markers were developed and used to study genetic diversity and its structure
in these pine species. After screening 48 primer pairs, 17 and 21 pairs were selected that produced 794 and 647 AFLPs in shortleaf
pine and loblolly pine, respectively. High-AFLP-based genetic diversity exists within shortleaf pine and loblolly pine, and
most (84.73% in shortleaf pine; 87.69% in loblolly pine) of this diversity is maintained within physiographic populations.
The high value of unbiased measures of genetic identity and low value of genetic distance for all pairwise comparisons indicates
that the populations have similar genetic structures. For shortleaf pine, there was no significant correlation between geographic
distance and genetic distance (r = 0.28), while for loblolly pine there was a weak but significant correlation (r = 0.51). 相似文献

Recent evidence shows that the serine protease inhibitor Kazal type 3 (Spink3) has more diverse functions than expected. To gain insight into its function, we analyzed the spatiotemporal expression profile of Spink3, using in situ hybridization (ISH) and a Spink3 ( +/lacZ ) knock-in mouse, in which lacZ was inserted into the Spink3 locus. Spink3 ( lacZ ) expression was first observed in the foregut, midgut, hindgut and the forebrain/midbrain junction region at 9.5 days post coitus (dpc). In the pancreas, Spink3 mRNA was detected at 11.5 dpc, before formation of the typical shape of the exocrine structure of the pancreas. Acinar cell expression was clearly identified by 13.5 dpc. After differentiation of the intestinal tract, Spink3 ( lacZ ) expression was observed in the large intestine at 11.5 dpc, followed by expression in the small intestine at 13.5 dpc, before appearance of intestinal digestive enzymes. Spink3 mRNA and Spink3 ( lacZ ) activity were also detected in other tissues, including the mesonephric tubules and the urogenital ridge at 11.5 dpc, the genital swelling at 13.5 dpc, the ductus epididymis at 17.5 dpc, and the seminal vesicle at 8 weeks. These data suggest that Spink3 may play important roles in proliferation and/or differentiation of various cell types during development. 相似文献
