To determine whether endotoxemia and release of tumor necrosis factor (TNF-alpha) and/or interleukin 1 alpha (IL-1 alpha) are involved in the pathogenesis of heatstroke, 17 adult patients with a mean rectal temperature of 42.1 +/- 0.2 degrees C were studied. Blood samples were taken on admission and after cooling was completed. TNF-alpha and IL-1 alpha levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) content was measured by the chromogenic substrate modification of the Limulus amebocyte lysate. TNF-alpha, IL-1 alpha, and LPS were elevated in all patients [199 +/- 25 (SE) pg/ml, 480.5 +/- 68.3 pg/ml, and 8.60 +/- 1.19 ng/ml, respectively, compared with normal control values of 31.4 +/- 8.4 pg/ml, 53.7 +/- 5.32 pg/ml, and less than 9 pg/ml]. There was no significant correlation between temperature and the circulating concentration of TNF-alpha, IL-1 alpha, and LPS. Postcooling TNF-alpha, IL-1 alpha, and LPS concentrations were significantly decreased but still above normal control values. The findings suggest that these mediators may have a role in the pathogenesis of heatstroke that could change the strategy of management.  相似文献

To address whether a shift in hypothalamic thermal setpoint might be a significant factor in induction of hypoxic hypothermia, behavioral thermoregulation was examined in 7 female Sprague-Dawley rats implanted with radiotelethermometers for deep body temperature (Tb) measurement in a thermocline during normoxia (PO2 = 125 torr) and hypoxia (PO2 = 60 torr). Normoxic rats (TNox) selected a mean ambient temperature of 19.7 +/- 1.4 (SE) degrees C and maintained Tb at 37.0 +/- 0.2 degrees C. Hypoxic rats selected a significantly higher ambient temperature (THox = 28.6 +/- 2.2 degrees C) but maintained Tb significantly lower at 35.5 +/- 0.3 degrees C. Without a thermal gradient (ambient temperature = 25 degrees C), Tb during hypoxia was 35.4 +/- 0.4 degrees C. The maintenance of a lower body temperature during hypoxia through behavioral thermoregulation despite having warmer temperatures available supports the hypothesis that the thermoregulatory setpoint of hypoxic rats is shifted to promote thermoregulation at a lower Tb, effectively reducing oxygen demand when oxygen supply is limited.  相似文献

By shortening to 5 seconds the burst of "fresh air" delivered by one level-pressing in 6 or 3 20 minutes sessions of operant conditioning at the ambient temperature of 35 +/- 1 degrees C brings 7 and 3 growing rats up to the maximal value of instrumental acquisition in 2 and 1 sessions. The experiment is going on with 40 minutes sessions in which the first 15 minutes belongs to the reward suppression. In spite of this inhibitory factor there is through the stimulus presence reconditioning which leads to instrumental adaptation at the ambient hyperthermia of 38.5 +/- 0.5 degrees C. At this temperature the instrumental activity level is the same as at 35 +/- 1 degrees C, in 20 minutes and the rectal temperature is rising up to provide compensatory work (+ 2.39 degrees C. instead of + 1.34 degrees C. at 35 +/- degrees C.).  相似文献

This study examined endotoxin-mediated cytokinemia during exertional heat stress (EHS). Subjects were divided into trained [TR; n=12, peak aerobic power (VO2peak)=70+/-2 ml.kg lean body mass(-1).min(-1)] and untrained (UT; n=11, VO2peak=50+/-1 ml.kg lean body mass(-1).min(-1)) groups before walking at 4.5 km/h with 2% elevation in a climatic chamber (40 degrees C, 30% relative humidity) wearing protective clothing until exhaustion (Exh). Venous blood samples at baseline and 0.5 degrees C rectal temperature increments (38.0, 38.5, 39.0, 39.5, and 40.0 degrees C/Exh) were analyzed for endotoxin, lipopolysaccharide binding protein, circulating cytokines, and intranuclear NF-kappaB translocation. Baseline and Exh samples were also stimulated with LPS (100 ng/ml) and cultured in vitro in a 37 degrees C water bath for 30 min. Phenotypic determination of natural killer cell frequency was also determined. Enhanced blood (104+/-6 vs. 84+/-3 ml/kg) and plasma volumes (64+/-4 vs. 51+/-2 ml/kg) were observed in TR compared with UT subjects. EHS produced an increased concentration of circulating endotoxin in both TR (8+/-2 pg/ml) and UT subjects (15+/-3 pg/ml) (range: not detected to 32 pg/ml), corresponding with NF-kappaB translocation and cytokine increases in both groups. In addition, circulating levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha and IL-6 were also elevated combined with concomitant increases in IL-1 receptor antagonist in both groups and IL-10 in TR subjects only. Findings suggest that the threshold for endotoxin leakage and inflammatory activation during EHS occurs at a lower temperature in UT compared with TR subjects and support the endotoxin translocation hypothesis of exertional heat stroke, linking endotoxin tolerance and heat tolerance.  相似文献

Leptin, a hormone regulating body weight, food intake, and metabolism, is associated with activation of immune cells and inflammation. In this study we analyzed levels of leptin, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), corticosterone, interleukin 1beta (IL-1beta), and nitric oxide (NO) production on days 10 and 22 of adjuvant arthritis (AA) in male Long Evans rats to ascertain possible relationship of leptin with its modulators during the early and late phases of chronic inflammation. The circulating leptin levels were significantly reduced already on day 10 of AA compared to controls (1.97+/-0.22 ng/ml vs. 3.08+/-0.25 ng/ml, p<0.05); on day 22 no significant further drop was observed (1.06+/-0.21 ng/ml). Leptin mRNA in epididymal fat tissue was reduced in arthritic animals compared to controls on day 22 (0.61+/-0.09 vs. 1.30+/-0.1 arbU/GAPDH (p<0.01). IL-1beta concentration in spleen was enhanced on day 10 of AA (24.55+/-4.67 pg/100 microg protein vs. 14.33+/-1.71 pg/100 microg protein; p<0.05); on day 22 it did not differ from controls. ACTH and corticosterone levels were significantly elevated only on day 22 of AA (ACTH: 306.17+/-42.22 pg/ml vs. 157.61+/-23.94 pg/ml; p<0.05; corticosterone: 5.24+/-1.38 microg/100 ml vs. 1.05+/-0.23 microg/100 ml; p<0.01). Nitrate levels were enhanced similarly on days 10 (49.86+/-1.83 microM) and 22 of AA (43.58+/-2.17 microM), compared to controls (23.42+/-1.39 microM, p<0.001). These results show that corticosterone does not stimulate leptin production during AA. The suppression of leptin may be a consequence of permanent activation of NO, IL-1beta, and of lower weight gain. Circulating leptin does not seem to play a key role in the progression of chronic arthritis.  相似文献

A real-time immunoquantitative PCR (iqPCR) method for detection of Staphylococcus aureus enterotoxin B (SEB) was developed and evaluated using both pure cultures and foods. The assay consisted of immunocapture of SEB and real-time PCR amplification of the DNA probe linked to the detection antibody. iqPCR was compared to an in-house enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using the same couple of capture-detection antibodies and to commercial kits for detection of S. aureus enterotoxins (SE). The iqPCR was approximately 1,000 times more sensitive (<10 pg ml(-1)) than the in-house ELISA and had a dynamic range of approximately 10 pg ml(-1) to approximately 30,000 pg ml(-1). iqPCR was not inhibited by any of the foods tested and was able to detect SEB present in these foods. No cross-reactivity with SE other than SEB was observed. Application of iqPCR for detection of SEB in cultures of S. aureus revealed the onset of SEB production after 4 h of incubation at 22, 37, and 42 degrees C, which was in the first half of the exponential growth phase. The total amounts of SEB produced by the two strains tested were larger at 42 degrees C than at 37 degrees C and were strain dependent.  相似文献

Previously, we demonstrated that either putative leukotriene receptor antagonists or a synthesis inhibitor markedly decreased pulmonary vascular resistance in the near-term fetal lamb and concluded that leukotrienes may play a role in maintaining the high pulmonary vascular resistance in the fetus. To further investigate the role of leukotrienes, we measured concentrations of leukotriene (LT) C4, LTD4, and LTE4 in 17 tracheal fluid samples from 8 of 9 near-term (129-139 days, term = 145 days), chronically-catheterized, fetal lambs during normoxia to evaluate their possible role in regulating resting tone and in seven of the nine before and during hypoxia to evaluate their possible role in hypoxic vasoconstriction. The tracheal fluid samples collected by gravity over 1-3 min, on ice, were immediately treated with cold ethanol, centrifuged, and the supernatant covered with N2 and stored in a -70 degrees C freezer for a maximum of 3 weeks. Purification and separation of leukotrienes was done by reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography using a gradient elution method, and fractions corresponding to LTC4, LTD4, and LTE4 standards were quantified immediately by radioimmunoassay. During normoxia (descending aortic PaO2 2.9 +/- 0.3 kPa [21.5 +/- 2.5 mmHg]; mean +/- SD), all 3 leukotrienes were detected in 16 of the 17 samples: LTC4 29 +/- 28 pg/ml (range 0-119 pg/ml); LTD4 66 +/- 51 pg/ml (range 9-177 pg/ml); and LTE4 43 +/- 50 pg/ml (range 0-204 pg/ml).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Experiments were carried out to determine the role of nitric oxide in mediating autonomic and behavioral thermoregulatory control in rat pups on postnatal days 1-2, 5-6, and 10-11. For an experiment, each pup received a subcutaneous injection of vehicle, NG-nitro-D-arginine methyl ester (D-NAME; 100 mg/kg), or NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME; 100 mg/kg) before being placed in a metabolic chamber or in a thermocline with a linear temperature gradient of 23 to 43 degrees C. In the metabolic chamber, oxygen consumption and core temperature were measured as ambient temperature was decreased from 40 to 15 degrees C over a 60-min period. Decreasing ambient temperature elicited an increase in oxygen consumption in all age groups that received vehicle or d-NAME. The lower critical temperature and peak oxygen consumption upon exposure to cold after vehicle were 41 +/- 10 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1) at 30 degrees C, 43 +/- 12 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1) at 28 degrees C, and 55 +/- 11 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1) at 25 degrees C in the 1- to 2-, 5- to 6-, and 10- to 11-day-old pups, respectively. Administration of L-NAME abolished the oxygen consumption response to cold in the 1- to 2- and 5- to 6-day-old pups and significantly attenuated the oxygen consumption response to cold in the 10- to 11-day-old pups. Selected ambient temperature in the thermocline was not significantly affected by prior administration of D-NAME or L-NAME compared with vehicle. Thus our data provide evidence that the nitric oxide system plays a role in mediating autonomic but not behavioral thermoregulatory control in rat pups during early postnatal maturation.  相似文献

Effects of hypoxia and cold acclimation on thermoregulation in the rat.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The effects of hypoxia (inspired O2 fraction = 0.12) on thermoregulation and on the different sources of thermogenesis were studied in rats before and after periods of 1-4 wk of cold acclimation. Measurements of metabolic rate (VO2) and body temperature (Tb) were made at 5-min intervals, and shivering activity was recorded continuously in groups of rats subjected to three protocols. In protocol 1, rats were exposed to normoxia to an ambient temperature (Ta) of 5 degrees C for 2 h. In protocol 2, at Ta of 5 degrees C, rats were exposed for 30 min to normoxia, then for 45 min to hypoxia, and finally for 30 min to normoxia. In protocol 3, in the non-cold-acclimated (NCA) rats, Ta was decreased from 30 to 5 degrees C in steps of 5 degrees C and of 30-min duration while in cold-acclimated (CA) rats at 5 degrees C for 4-wk, Ta was increased from 5 to 30 degrees C in steps of 5 degrees C and of 30-min duration. Recordings were made in normoxia and in hypoxia on different days in the same animals. The results showed that 1) in NCA rats, cold exposure in normoxia induced increases in VO2 and shivering that were proportional to the decrease in Ta; 2) in CA rats in normoxia, for a given Ta, VO2 and Tb were higher than in NCA rats, whereas shivering was generally lower; and 3) in both NCA and CA rats, hypoxia induced a transient decrease in shivering and a sustained decrease in nonshivering thermogenesis associated with a marked decrease in Tb that was about the same in NCA and CA rats. We speculate that hypoxia acts on Tb control to produce a general inhibition of thermogenesis. Nonshivering thermogenesis is markedly sensitive to hypoxia, especially demonstrable in CA rats; a recovery or even an increase in shivering can compensate for the decrease in nonshivering thermogenesis.  相似文献

Rats have an attenuated febrile response to endogenous pyrogen near the term of pregnancy. Given the fundamental role of E-series prostaglandins (PGEs) in mediating the febrile response to blood-borne endogenous pyrogen, the present experiments were carried out to determine whether PGEs increase in the area surrounding the organum vasculosum laminae terminalis (peri-OVLT) of near-term pregnant (P) rats as in nonpregnant (NP) rats after intravenous (iv) administration of recombinant rat interleukin-1beta (rrIL-1beta). Core temperature was measured by telemetry and peri-OVLT interstitial fluid was sampled in 12 NP and 12 P chronically instrumented, Sprague-Dawley rats by microdialysis for determination of total PGEs by radioimmunoassay. Basal core temperatures were higher in NP compared with P rats (NP 37.9 degrees C +/- 0.5, P 36.9 degrees C +/- 0.4; P < 0.05), but basal peri-OVLT PGEs were similar in both groups (NP 260 +/- 153 pg/ml, P 278 +/- 177 pg/ml; P =not significant). Intravenous administration of rrIL-1beta to NP rats produced a significant increase in core temperature with a latency, magnitude, and duration of 10 min, 0.87 degrees C, and at least 170 min, respectively; peri-OVLT PGEs were increased significantly by 30 min and averaged 270% above basal levels throughout the experiment. In P rats, however, neither core temperature nor peri-OVLT PGEs increased significantly after iv administration of rrIL-1beta. Intravenous administration of vehicle did not significantly alter core temperature or peri-OVLT PGEs in either group of rats. Thus peri-OVLT PGEs do not increase in P rats as they do in NP rats after iv administration of rrIL-1beta. The mechanism of this interesting component of the maternal adaptation to pregnancy, which likely plays a major role in mediating the attenuated febrile response to endogenous pyrogen near the term of pregnancy, warrants further investigation.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the systemic hemodynamic mechanism(s) underlying the pressor response to nonexertional heat stress in the unrestrained conscious rat. After a 60-min control period [ambient temperature (Ta) 24 degrees C], male Sprague-Dawley rats (260-340 g) were exposed to a Ta of 42 degrees C until a colonic temperature (Tc) of 41 degrees C was attained. As Tc rose from control levels (38.1 +/- 0.1 degrees C) to 41 degrees C, mean arterial blood pressure (carotid artery catheter, n = 33) increased from 124 +/- 2 to 151 +/- 2 mmHg (P less than 0.05). During this period, heart rate increased (395 +/- 5 to 430 +/- 6 beats/min, P less than 0.05) and stroke volume remained unchanged. As a result, ascending aorta blood flow velocity (Doppler flow probe, n = 8), used as an index of cardiac output, did not change from control levels during heating, but there was a progressive Tc-dependent increase in systemic vascular resistance (+30% at end heating, P less than 0.05). This systemic vasoconstrictor response was associated with decreases in blood flow (-31 +/- 9 and -21 +/- 5%) and increases in vascular resistance (94 +/- 16 and 53 +/- 8%; all P less than 0.05) in the superior mesenteric and renal arteries (n = 8 each) and increases in plasma norepinephrine (303 +/- 37 to 1,237 +/- 262 pg/ml) and epinephrine (148 +/- 28 to 708 +/- 145 pg/ml) concentrations (n = 12, P less than 0.05).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Plasma epinephrine and norepinephrine concentrations were measured in seventeen unanaesthetized 3 to 4 days-old piglets while in a thermoneutral environment (31.3 degrees C) and 30, 45 and 60 min after induction of environmental cold stress (19.9-23.1 degrees C). Plasma epinephrine and norepinephrine concentrations in a warm environment were 142 +/- 26 pg/ml, and 456 +/- 44 pg/ml respectively. Environmental cold stress evoked significant increases in norepinephrine values after 30 (624 +/- 58 pg/ml), 45 (626 +/- 60 pg/ml) and 60 (626 +/- 54 pg/ml) min of cold stress. Plasma epinephrine concentrations did not significantly change during environmental cold stress. Post-hoc stratification of piglets into normothermic (deep rectal temperature 38.6 degrees C-38.8 degrees C, n = 9) and hypothermic (deep rectal temperature 37.1 degrees C-37.7 degrees C, n = 7) subgroups revealed significant increases in plasma norepinephrine concentrations only in the hypothermic subgroup. We conclude that plasma norepinephrine, but not epinephrine, is increased in newborn piglets during environmental cold stress and that the changes in norepinephrine concentrations are related to body core hypothermia. We speculate that hypothermia-mediated reductions in peripheral norepinephrine breakdown and re-uptake contribute to the rise in circulating levels.  相似文献

Isolated rat liver cells are able to take up corticosterone. The Arrhenius plot of the uptake shows a biphasic course with a change in the slope around 25 degrees C. 25-OH-cholesterol is also taken up; this phenomenon reaches a maximum at 10-15 minutes. After preincubating liver cells at 37 degrees C in the presence of this sterol the phase transition is shifted to a higher temperature (32 degrees C) as shown in the Arrhenius plot of the corticosterone uptake. At the same time the uptake of corticosterone is diminished. This cannot readily be explained by direct competition. The mechanism might involve an inhibition of an active uptake mechanism caused by a change in the plasma membrane.  相似文献

The relative importance of skin vs. core temperature for stimulating cold acclimation (CA) was examined by 5 wk of daily 1-h water immersions (20 degrees C) in resting (RG) and exercising (EG) subjects. Rectal temperature fell (0.8 degrees C; P < 0.05) during immersion only in RG. Skin temperature fell (P < 0.05) similarly in both groups. Physiological responses during cold-air exposure (90 min, 5 degrees C) were assessed before and after CA. Body temperatures and metabolic heat production were similar in both groups with no change due to CA. Cardiac output was lower (P < 0.05) in both groups post-CA (10.4 +/- 1.2 l/min) than pre-CA (12.2 +/- 1. 0 l/min), but mean arterial pressure was unchanged (pre-CA 107 +/- 2 mmHg, post-CA 101 +/- 2 mmHg). The increase in norepinephrine was greater (P < 0.05) post-CA (954 +/- 358 pg/ml) compared with pre-CA (1,577 +/- 716 pg/ml) for RG, but CA had no effect on the increase in norepinephrine for EG (pre-CA 1,288 +/- 438 pg/ml, post-CA 1,074 +/- 279 pg/ml). Skin temperature reduction alone may be a sufficient stimulus during CA for increased vasoconstrictor response, but core temperature reduction appears necessary to enhance sympathetic activation during cold exposure.  相似文献

The interaction between pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin 12 (IL-12), interleukin 18 (IL-18) and transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) may play an important role in malaria pathogenesis and outcome. IL-18 cooperates with IL-12 in the IFN-gamma production by T, B, and NK cells, and synergizes with IL-12 for IFN-gamma production by Th1 cells. Recently it has been demonstrated that these cytokines modulate the immunoresponse in Plasmodium falciparum malaria. The aim of this study was to measure the plasma levels of IL-12, IL-18 and TGF-beta in 105 African children with various degrees of malaria, and correlate the production of these cytokines with the severity of the disease. IL-12, IL-18 and TGF-beta levels were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The severity of malaria was established by parasitemia, clinical symptoms and haematological parameters. The levels of IL-12, IL-18 and TGF-beta were found to be significantly elevated (15.6 + / - 12.3, 22.7 + / - 13.8 pg/ml and 25.14 + / - 13.22 pg/ml respectively) in all of the children. IL-12 and IL-18 levels were significantly lower (13.2 + / - 5.53 and 21.5 + / - 10 pg/ml pg/ml) in children with severe disease, whereas the level of TGF-beta was higher (28.09 + / - 12.39 pg/ml). In contrast, IL-12 and IL-18 levels were found to be higher (17.32 + / - 7.8 pg/ml and 25.7 + / - 7.6 pg/ml) in patients with mild disease, whereas the level of TGF-beta was lower (20.92 + / - 12.76 pg/ml) compared to the severe malaria group. The correlation between IL-12 and IL-18 demonstrated a progressive relationship up to a value of IL-12 < 25 pg/ml, while IL-18 remained stable at higher levels of IL-12. An inverse correlation was found between IL-12 and TGF-beta up to a value of IL-12 < 30, after which the level of TGF-beta remained stable. This finding suggests that fine mechanisms regulate the interaction between IL-12, IL-18 and TGF-beta in the immune response to Plasmodium falciparum.  相似文献

To clarify the mechanism of the intoxicating feeling attained after a traditional 47 degrees C hot-spring bath called 'jikan-yu' in Kusatsu-spa, Japan, we examined the change in plasma levels of beta-endorphin and methionine enkephalin in 7 healthy subjects. The mean sublingual temperature rose from 36.8 degrees C to 38.6 degrees C and the plasma beta-endorphin level from 16.2 pg/ml to 49.5 pg/ml 2 minutes after completing a 3-minute bath in 47 degrees C hot-spring water. However, the plasma methionine enkephalin level was not changed. This feeling of intoxication may be explained by the transient rise in plasma beta-endorphin level.  相似文献

Inflammatory cytokines released from adipose tissue play an important role in different pathological processes. In the present study, we investigated the inflammatory cytokine response of human subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) by applying the open-flow microperfusion technique. Four standard 18-gauge microperfusion catheters were inserted into periumbilical SAT of eight healthy male volunteers [29 +/- 3 yr, BMI 24.3 +/- 1.9 (mean +/- SD)]. SAT probe effluents were collected at 60-min intervals for 8 h after catheter insertion. Different perfusion fluids were used to measure the local effect of insulin and/or glucose on the cytokine response. SAT probe effluents were analyzed for IL-1beta, IL-6, CXCL8 (IL-8), and TNF-alpha. SAT concentrations of IL-1beta increased 100-fold from 1.0 +/- 0.2 pg/ml (mean +/- SE) to 101.5 +/- 23.2 pg/ml (P < 0.001) after 8 h. A 130-fold increase was observed for CXCL8, from 49 +/- 29 to 6,554 +/- 1,713 pg/ml (P < 0.001). Furthermore, a 20-fold increase of IL-6 was observed within the first 5 h (from 159 +/- 123 to 3,554 +/- 394 pg/ml; P < 0.001), and a significant decline to 2,154 +/- 216 pg/ml (P < 0.01) was seen thereafter. Finally, TNF-alpha increased from 1.4 +/- 0.6 to 2.5 +/- 0.5 pg/ml (P < 0.05) in hour 2 and remained stable thereafter. Local administration of insulin exerted a stimulatory effect on the inflammatory response of IL-6. In conclusion, SAT exerts a highly reproducible and consistent proinflammatory cytokine response after minimally invasive trauma caused by the insertion of a catheter in humans.  相似文献

The numbat (Myrmecobius fasciatus) is unique amongst marsupials as it is exclusively diurnal, feeds only on termites and is semi-fossorial. This study examines the thermal and metabolic physiology of the numbat to determine if its physiology reflects its phylogeny, diet and semi-fossorial habit. Numbats (mean adult body mass 552 g) were able to regulate body temperature at ambient temperatures of 15-30 degrees C, with a body temperature at thermoneutrality (30 degrees C) of 34.1 degrees C. The thermoneutral body temperature was not significantly different from that predicted for an equivalent-sized marsupial. Basal metabolic rate, measured at 30 degrees C, was 0.389 +/- 0.025 ml O(2) g(-1) h(-1), and was slightly but not significantly lower at 82.5% of that predicted for a typical marsupial of equivalent body mass. Metabolic rate increased with decreasing ambient temperatures below 30 degrees C. Patterns of metabolic cycling observed for completely inactive numbats at ambient temperatures below 30 degrees C are likely to be related to sleep phase. Wet thermal conductance of 1.94 J g(-1) h(-1) degrees C(-1) (at 30 degrees C) was 131% of that predicted for a marsupial. Evaporative water loss of the numbat remained constant below the thermoneutral zone (<30 degrees C) at approximately 0.6 ml g(-1) h(-1), only 47.4% of that predicted for a marsupial. It increased to 1.01 +/- 0.16 ml g(-1) h(-1) at an ambient temperature of 32.5 degrees C. The thermal and metabolic physiology of the numbat is generally similar to that expected for other marsupials, and is also comparable to that of termitivorous placental mammals. Thus the reduction in body temperature and basal metabolic rate of placental termitivores is a "marsupial-like" low energy turnover physiology, and the numbat being a marsupial already has an appropriate physiology to survive exclusively on a low energy diet of termites.  相似文献

Seven male skiers exercised for 30 min on a cycle ergometer at 50% of maximal oxygen uptake and an ambient temperature of 5 degrees C. The exercise was preceded either by cold exposure (PREC) or active warming-up (PREH). The data were compared with control exercise (CONT) performed immediately after entering the thermal chamber from a thermoneutral environment. Cold exposure resulted in negative heat storage (96.1 kJ.m-2, SE 5.9) leading to significantly lower rectal, mean body and mean skin temperatures at the onset of exercise in PREC, as compared to PREH and CONT. The PREC-PREH temperature differences were still significant at the end of the exercise period. During exercise in the PREC test, oxygen uptake was higher than in PREH test (32.8 ml.kg-1.min-1, SE 1.5 vs 30.5 ml.kg-1.min-1, SE 1.3, respectively). Heart rate showed only a tendency to be higher in PREC than in PREH and CONT tests. In the PREH test skin and body temperatures as well as sweat rate were already elevated at the beginning of exercise. Exercise-induced changes in these variables were minimal. Heat storage decreased with the duration of the exercise. Exercise at low ambient temperature preceded by a 30-min rest in a cold environment requires more energy than the same exercise performed after PREH.  相似文献
