The best performing low bandgap copolymers PTB series to date which is based on thieno[3,4‐b]thiophene‐alt‐benzodithiophene units blended with [6,6]‐phenyl‐C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM), have been the focus of polymer‐based solar cells. Here, novel fluorinated polymers PTB7‐Fx (fluorine units coupled with submonomer thieno[3,4‐b]thiophene) with varied degree of fluorination are used as electron donor materials. The PTB7‐Fx:PC71BM bulk heterojunction (BHJ) films spin‐coated from the host solvent chlorobenzene without and with solvent additive 1,8‐diiodooctane (DIO) and the corresponding solar cell devices are systematically investigated to address the morphology‐efficiency relationship. Self‐assembled BHJ morphology is already observed for as‐spun blend films. After adding the solvent additive DIO, the pronounced ordered structures are suppressed and better intermixed films with much smaller domain sizes result. Full fluorination of the third C‐atom of thienothiophene gives rise to the highest power conversion efficiency. As the absorption properties, film morphology and crystallinity remain similar for different degrees of fluorination, the main influence of the photovoltaic performance is ascribed to the different lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of each polymer instead of the film morphology. Thus the device performance can be efficiently improved by tuning the energy level of the polymer without necessarily changing either the film nanomorphology or crystallinity dramatically.  相似文献

A correlation between the photovoltaic performance and dynamics of transient photoconductivity is investigated by flash‐photolysis time‐resolved microwave conductivity (FP‐TRMC). This electrode‐less technique offers chances to mitigate barriers for direct, speedy, and robust evaluation of bulk heterojunction (BHJ) film. We examined the blend ratio, process (solvent and thermal annealing), and impurity (a metal complex of Pd) and degradation effects in BHJ films consisting of poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and methanofullerene (PCBM). The minimum charge carrier mobility of 0.22 cm2V?1s?1 was found in P3HT:PCBM = 1:1 film along with 3.26% power conversion efficiency. The revealed good correlation is not only applicable to process optimization, but also expected as a facile screening method to survey the potential of optoelectronic materials.  相似文献

The microstructure of the polymer PBDTTT‐EFT and blends with the fullerene derivative PC71BM that achieve solar conversion efficiencies of over 9% is comprehensively investigated. A combination of synchrotron techniques are employed including surface‐sensitive near‐edge X‐ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy and bulk‐sensitive grazing‐incidence wide angle X‐ray scattering (GIWAXS). A preferential “face‐on” orientation of PBDTTT‐EFT is observed in the bulk of both pristine and blend thin films, with π–π stacking largely normal to the substrate, which is thought to be beneficial for charge transport. At the surface of the blend, a slight “edge‐on” structure of the polymer is observed with side‐chains aligned normal to the substrate. The effect of the solvent additive 1,8‐diiodooctane (DIO) on solar cell efficiency and film microstructure is also investigated, where the addition of 3 vol% DIO results in an efficiency increase from ≈6.4% to ≈9.5%. GIWAXS studies indicate that the addition of DIO improves the crystallization of the polymer. Furthermore, atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy are employed to image surface and bulk morphology revealing that DIO suppresses the formation of large PC71BM aggregates.  相似文献

All‐inorganic CsPbIBr2 perovskite solar cells (pero‐SCs) exhibit excellent overall stability, but their power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) are greatly limited by their wide bandgaps. Integrated solar cells (ISCs) are considered to be an emergent technology that could extend their photoresponse by directly stacking two distinct photoactive layers with complementary bandgaps. However, rising photocurrents always sacrifice other photovoltaic parameters, thereby leading to an unsatisfactory PCE. Here, a recast strategy is proposed to optimize the spatial distribution components of low‐bandgap organic bulk‐heterojunction (BHJ) film, and is combined with an all‐inorganic perovskite to construct perovskite/BHJ ISCs. With this strategy, the integrated perovskite/BHJ film with a top‐enriched donor‐material spatial distribution is shown to effectively improve ambipolar charge transport behavior and suppress charge carrier recombination. For the first time, the ISC is not only significantly extended and enhanced the photoresponse achieving a 20% increase in current density, but also exhibits a high open‐circuit voltage and fill factor at the same time. As a result, a record PCE of 11.08% based on CsPbIBr2 pero‐SCs is realized; it simultaneously shows excellent long‐term stability against heat and ultraviolet light.  相似文献

The ratio of the donor and acceptor components in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) organic solar cells is a key parameter for achieving optimal power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, it has been recently found that a few BHJ blends have compositional tolerance and achieve high performance in a wide range of donor to acceptor ratios. For instance, the X2 :PC61BM system, where X2 is a molecular donor of intermediate dimensions, exhibits a PCE of 6.6%. Its PCE is relatively insensitive to the blend ratio over the range from 7:3 to 4:6. The effect of blend ratio of X2 /PC61BM on morphology and device performance is therefore systematically investigated by using the structural characterization techniques of energy‐filtered transmission energy microscopy (EF‐TEM), resonant soft X‐ray scattering (R‐SoXS) and grazing incidence wide angle X‐ray scattering (GIWAXS). Changes in blend ratio do not lead to obvious differences in morphology, as revealed by R‐SoXS and EF‐TEM. Rather, there is a smooth evolution of a connected structure with decreasing domain spacing from 8:2 to 6:4 blend ratios. Domain spacing remains constant from 6:4 to 4:6 blend ratios, which suggests the presence of continuous phases with proper domain size that may provide access for charge carriers to reach their corresponding electrodes.  相似文献

Morphological modification using solvent vapor annealing (SVA) provides a simple and widely used fabrication option for improving the power conversion efficiencies of solution‐processed bulk heterojunction (BHJ) small molecule solar cells. Previous reports on SVA have shown that this strategy influences the degree of donor/acceptor phase separation and also improves molecular donor ordering. A blend composed of a dithienopyrrole containing oligothiophene as donor (named UU07) and [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester as acceptor is investigated with respect to SVA treatment to explore the dynamics of the BHJ evolution as a function of annealing time. A systematic study of the time dependence of morphology evolution clarifies the fundamental mechanisms behind SVA and builds the structure–property relation to the related device performance. The following two‐stage mechanism is identified: Initially, as SVA time increases, donor crystallinity is improved, along with enhanced domain purity resulting in improved charge transport properties and reduced recombination losses. However, further extending SVA time results in domains that are too large and a few large donor crystallites, depleting donor component in the mixed domain. Moreover, the larger domain microstructure suffers from enhanced recombination and overall lower bulk mobility. This not only reveals the importance of precisely controlling SVA time on gaining morphological control, but also provides a path toward rational optimization of device performance.  相似文献

Design rules are presented for significantly expanding sequential processing (SqP) into previously inaccessible polymer:fullerene systems by tailoring binary solvent blends for fullerene deposition. Starting with a base solvent that has high fullerene solubility, 2‐chlorophenol (2‐CP), ellipsometry‐based swelling experiments are used to investigate different co‐solvents for the fullerene‐casting solution. By tuning the Flory‐Huggins χ parameter of the 2‐CP/co‐solvent blend, it is possible to optimally swell the polymer of interest for fullerene interdiffusion without dissolution of the polymer underlayer. In this way solar cell power conversion efficiencies are obtained for the PTB7 (poly[(4,8‐bis[(2‐ethylhexyl)oxy]benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene‐2,6‐diyl)(3‐fluoro‐2‐[(2‐ethylhexyl)carbonyl]thieno[3,4‐b]thiophenediyl)]) and PC61BM (phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester) materials combination that match those of blend‐cast films. Both semicrystalline (e.g., P3HT (poly(3‐hexylthiophene‐2,5‐diyl)) and entirely amorphous (e.g., PSDTTT (poly[(4,8‐di(2‐butyloxy)benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene‐2,6‐diyl)‐alt‐(2,5‐bis(4,4′‐bis(2‐octyl)dithieno[3,2‐b:2′3′‐d]silole‐2,6‐diyl)thiazolo[5,4‐d]thiazole)]) conjugated polymers can be processed into highly efficient photovoltaic devices using the solvent‐blend SqP design rules. Grazing‐incidence wide‐angle x‐ray diffraction experiments confirm that proper choice of the fullerene casting co‐solvent yields well‐ordered interdispersed bulk heterojunction (BHJ) morphologies without the need for subsequent thermal annealing or the use of trace solvent additives (e.g., diiodooctane). The results open SqP to polymer/fullerene systems that are currently incompatible with traditional methods of device fabrication, and make BHJ morphology control a more tractable problem.  相似文献

As a predominant fabrication method of organic solar cells (OSCs), casting of a bulk heterojunction (BHJ) structure presents overwhelming advantages for achieving higher power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, long‐term stability and mechanical strength are significantly crucial to realize large‐area and flexible devices. Here, controlling blend film morphology is considered as an effective way toward co‐optimizing device performance, stability, and mechanical properties. A PCE of 12.27% for a P‐i‐N‐structured OSC processed by sequential blade casting (SBC) is reported. The device not only outperforms the as‐cast BHJ devices (11.01%), but also shows impressive stability and mechanical properties. The authors corroborate such enhancements with improved vertical phase separation and purer phases toward more efficient transport and collection of charges. Moreover, adaptation of SBC strategy here will result in thermodynamically favorable nanostructures toward more stable film morphology, and thus improving the stability and mechanical properties of the devices. Such co‐optimization of OSCs will pave ways toward realizing the highly efficient, large‐area, flexible devices for future endeavors.  相似文献

Solution‐processable small molecule (SM) donors are promising alternatives to their polymer counterparts in bulk‐heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells. While SM donors with favorable spectral absorption, self‐assembly patterns, optimum thin‐film morphologies, and high carrier mobilities in optimized donor–acceptor blends are required to further BHJ device efficiencies, material structure governs each one of those attributes. As a result, the rational design of SM donors with gradually improved BHJ solar cell efficiencies must concurrently address: (i) bandgap tuning and optimization of spectral absorption (inherent to the SM main chain) and (ii) pendant‐group substitution promoting structural order and mediating morphological effects. In this paper, the rational pendant‐group substitution in benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene–6,7‐difluoroquinoxaline SMs is shown to be an effective approach to narrowing the optical gap (Eopt) of the SM donors ( SM1 and SM2 ), without altering their propensity to order and form favorable thin‐film BHJ morphologies with PC71BM. Systematic device examinations show that power conversion efficiencies >8% and open‐circuit voltages (VOC) nearing 1 V can be achieved with the narrow‐gap SM donor analog ( SM2 , Eopt = 1.6 eV) and that charge transport in optimized BHJ solar cells proceeds with minimal, nearly trap‐free recombination. Detailed device simulations, light intensity dependence, and transient photocurrent analyses emphasize how carrier recombination impacts BHJ device performance upon optimization of active layer thickness and morphology.  相似文献

The use of fullerene as acceptor limits the thermal stability of organic solar cells at high temperatures as their diffusion inside the donor leads to phase separation via Ostwald ripening. Here it is reported that fullerene diffusion is fully suppressed at temperatures up to 140 °C in bulk heterojunctions based on the benzodithiophene‐based polymer (the poly[[4,8‐bis[(2‐ethylhexyl)oxy]‐benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene‐2,6‐diyl][3‐fluoro‐2‐[(2‐ethylhexyl)carbonyl]‐thieno[3,4‐b]thiophenediyl]], (PTB7) in combination with the fullerene derivative [6,6]‐phenyl‐C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC70BM). The blend stability is found independently of the presence of diiodooctane (DIO) used to optimize nanostructuration and in contrast to PTB7 blends using the smaller fullerene derivative PC70BM. The unprecedented thermal stability of PTB7:PC70BM layers is addressed to local minima in the mixing enthalpy of the blend forming stable phases that inhibit fullerene diffusion. Importantly, although the nanoscale morphology of DIO processed blends is thermally stable, corresponding devices show strong performance losses under thermal stress. Only by the use of a high temperature annealing step removing residual DIO from the device, remarkably stable high efficiency solar cells with performance losses less than 10% after a continuous annealing at 140 °C over 3 days are obtained. These results pave the way toward high temperature stable polymer solar cells using fullerene acceptors.  相似文献

The bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cell performance of many polymers depends on the polymer molecular weight (M n) and the solvent additive(s) used for solution processing. However, the mechanism that causes these dependencies is not well understood. This work determines how M n and solvent additives affect the performance of BHJ solar cells made with the polymer poly(di(2‐ethylhexyloxy)benzo[1,2‐b:4,5‐b′]dithiophene‐co‐octylthieno[3,4‐c]pyrrole‐4,6‐dione) (PBDTTPD). Low M n PBDTTPD devices have exceedingly large fullerene‐rich domains, which cause extensive charge‐carrier recombination. Increasing the M n of PBDTTPD decreases the size of these domains and significantly improves device performance. PBDTTPD aggregation in solution affects the size of the fullerene‐rich domains and this effect is linked to the dependency of PBDTTPD solubility on M n. Due to its poor solubility high M n PBDTTPD quickly forms a fibrillar polymer network during spin‐casting and this network acts as a template that prevents large‐scale phase separation. Furthermore, processing low M n PBDTTPD devices with a solvent additive improves device performance by inducing polymer aggregation in solution and preventing large fullerene‐rich domains from forming. These findings highlight that polymer aggregation in solution plays a significant role in determining the morphology and performance of BHJ solar cells.  相似文献

Nanofibers consisting of the bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaic (BHJ–OPV) electron donor–electron acceptor pair poly(3‐hexylthiophene):phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM) are produced through a coaxial electrospinning process. While P3HT:PCBM blends are not directly electrospinnable, P3HT:PCBM‐containing fibers are produced in a coaxial fashion by utilizing polycaprolactone (PCL) as an electrospinnable sheath material. Pure P3HT:PCBM fibers are easily obtained after electrospinning by selectively removing the PCL sheath with cyclopentanone (average diameter 120 ± 30 nm). These fibers are then incorporated into the active layer of a BHJ–OPV device, which results in improved short‐circuit current densities, fill factors, and power‐conversion efficiencies (PCE) as compared to thin‐film devices of identical chemical composition. The best‐performing fiber‐based devices exhibit a PCE of 4.0%, while the best thin‐film devices have a PCE of 3.2%. This increase in device performance is attributed to the increased in‐plane alignment of P3HT polymer chains on the nanoscale, caused by the electrospun fibers, which leads to increased optical absorption and subsequent exciton generation. This methodology for improving device performance of BHJ–OPVs could also be implemented for other electron donor–electron acceptor systems, as nanofiber formation is largely independent of the PV material.  相似文献

Bulk heterojunction (BHJ) morphologies are vital to the device performance of organic solar cells (OSCs), including phase separation in lateral and vertical directions. However, the morphology developed from the blend solution is not easily predicted and controlled, especially in the vertical direction, because the BHJ morphology is kinetically frozen during the rapid solvent evaporation process. Here, a simple approach to control BHJ morphologies with optimized phase distribution for small molecule:[6,6]‐phenyl‐C71‐butyric acid methyl ester (PC71 BM) blends by enhancing the substrate temperature during the spin‐coating process. Three molecules with various fluorine atoms in the end acceptor units are selected. The relationship among molecular structures, substrate temperature effects on the morphology, and device performances are symmetrically investigated. Low temperature induces a multiple‐sublayer‐like architecture with significantly varied distributions of composition, morphology, and localized state energy, while high processing temperature induces more uniform film. The short‐circuit current, open‐circuit voltage, and fill factor of the devices are tuned with synergic improvement of efficiency toward over 10% and 11% for conventional and inverted devices. This work reveals the origination of vertical phase segregation, and provides a facile strategy to optimize the hierarchical phase separation for enhancing the performance of OSCs.  相似文献

Tuning the blend composition is an essential step to optimize the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells. PCEs from devices of unoptimized donor:acceptor (D:A) weight ratio are generally significantly lower than optimized devices. Here, two high‐performance organic nonfullerene BHJ blends PBDB‐T:ITIC and PBDB‐T:N2200 are adopted to investigate the effect of blend ratio on device performance. It is found that the PCEs of polymer‐polymer (PBDB‐T:N2200) blend are more tolerant to composition changes, relative to polymer‐molecule (PBDB‐T:ITIC) devices. In both systems, short‐circuit current density (Jsc) is tracked closely with PCE, indicating that exciton dissociation and transport strongly influence PCEs. With dilute acceptor concentrations, polymer‐polymer blends maintain high electron mobility relative to the polymer‐molecule blends, which explains the dramatic difference in PCEs between them as a function of D:A blend ratio. In addition, polymer‐polymer solar cells, especially at high D:A blend ratio, are stable (less than 5% relative loss) over 70 d under continuous heating at 80 °C in a glovebox without encapsulation. This work demonstrates that all‐polymer solar cells show advantage in operational lifetime under thermal stress and blend‐ratio resilience, which indicates their high potential for designing of stable and scalable solar cells.  相似文献

In this work, the detailed morphology studies of polymer poly(3‐hexylthiophene‐2,5‐diyl) (P3HT):fullerene(PCBM) and polymer(P3HT):polymer naphthalene diimide thiophene (PNDIT) solar cell are presented to understand the challenge for getting high performance all‐polymer solar cells. The in situ X‐ray scattering and optical interferometry and ex situ hard and soft X‐ray scattering and imaging techniques are used to characterize the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) ink during drying and in dried state. The crystallization of P3HT polymers in P3HT:PCBM bulk heterojunction shows very different behavior compared to that of P3HT:PNDIT BHJ due to different mobilities of P3HT in the donor:acceptor glass. Supplemented by the ex situ grazing incidence X‐ray diffraction and soft X‐ray scattering, PNDIT has a lower tendency to form a mixed phase with P3HT than PCBM, which may be the key to inhibit the donor polymer crystallization process, thus creating preferred small phase separation between the donor and acceptor polymer.  相似文献

The most successful active film morphology in organic photovoltaics is the bulk heterojunction (BHJ). The performance of a BHJ arises from a complex interplay of the spatial organization of the segregated donor and acceptor phases and the local order/quality of the respective phases. These critical morphological features develop dynamically during film formation, and it has become common practice to control them by the introduction of processing additives. Here, in situ grazing incidence X‐ray diffraction (GIXD) and grazing incidence small angle X‐ray scattering (GISAXS) studies of the development of order in BHJ films formed from the donor polymer poly(3‐hexylthiophene) and acceptor phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester under the influence of two common additives, 1,8‐octanedithiol and 1‐chloronaphthalene, are reported. By comparing optical aggregation to crystallization and using GISAXS to determine the number and nature of phases present during drying, two common mechanisms by which the additives increase P3HT crystallinity are identified. Additives accelerate the appearance of pre‐crystalline nuclei by controlling solvent quality and allow for extended crystal growth by delaying the onset of PCBM‐induced vitrification. The glass transition effects vary system‐to‐system and may be correlated to the number and composition of phases present during drying.  相似文献

A novel porphyrin‐C60 dyad (PCD1) is designed and synthesized to investigate and manipulate the supramolecular structure where geometrically isotropic [such as [60]fullerene (C60)] and anisotropic [such as porphyrin (Por)] units coexist. It is observed that PCD1 possesses an enantiomeric phase behavior. The melting temperature of the stable PCD1 thermotropic phase is 160 °C with a latent heat (ΔH) of 18.5 kJ mol?1. The phase formation is majorly driven by the cooperative intermolecular Por–Por and C60–C60 interactions. Structural analysis reveals that this stable phase possesses a supramolecular “double‐cable” structure with one p‐type Por core columnar channel and three helical n‐type C60 peripheral channels. These “double‐cable” columns further pack into a hexagonal lattice with a = b = 4.65 nm, c = 41.3 nm, α = β = 90°, and γ = 120°. The column repeat unit is determined to possess a 12944 helix. With both donor (D; Pro) and acceptor (A; C60) units having their own connecting channels as well as the large D/A interface within the supramolecular “double‐cable” structure, PCD1 has photogenerated carriers with longer lifetimes compared to the conventional electron acceptor [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester. A phase‐separated columnar morphology is observed in a bulk‐heterojunction (BHJ) material made by the physical blend of a low band‐gap conjugated polymer, [poly[2,6‐(4,4‐bis‐(2‐ethylhexyl)‐4H‐cyclopenta [2,1‐b;3,4‐b′]‐dithiophene)‐alt‐4,7‐(2,1,3‐benzothia‐diazole)] (PCPDTBT), and PCD1. With a specific phase structure in the solid state and in the blend, PCD1 is shown to be a promising candidate as a new electron acceptor in high performance BHJ polymer solar cells.  相似文献

In this study the thickness of the PTB7‐Th:PC71BM bulk heterojunction (BHJ) film and the PF3N‐2TNDI electron transport layer (ETL) is systematically tuned to achieve polymer solar cells (PSCs) with optimized power conversion efficiency (PCE) of over 9% when an ultrathin BHJ of 50 nm is used. Optical modeling suggests that the high PCE is attributed to the optical spacer effect from the ETL, which not only maximizes the optical field within the BHJ film but also facilitates the formation of a more homogeneously distributed charge generation profile across the BHJ film. Experimentally it is further proved that the extra photocurrent produced at the PTB7‐Th/PF3N‐2TNDI interface also contributes to the improved performance. Taking advantage of this high performance thin film device structure, one step further is taken to fabricate semitransparent PSCs (ST‐PSCs) by using an ultrathin transparent Ag cathode to replace the thick Ag mirror cathode, yielding a series of high performance ST‐PSCs with PCEs over 6% and average visible transmittance between 20% and 30%. These ST‐PSCs also possess remarkable transparency color perception and rendering properties, which are state‐of‐the‐art and fulfill the performance criteria for potential use as power‐generating windows in near future.  相似文献

Single‐walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) fullerene solar cells have recently attracted attention due to their low‐cost processing, high environmental stability, and near‐infrared absorption. While SWCNT–fullerene bulk‐heterojunction photovoltaics employing an inverted architecture and polychiral SWCNTs have achieved efficiencies exceeding 3% over device areas of ≈1 mm2, large‐area SWCNT solar cells have not yet been demonstrated. In particular, with increasing device area, spatial inhomogeneities in the SWCNT film have limited overall device performance. Here, 1,8‐diiodooctane (DIO) is utilized as a solvent additive to reduce fullerene domain size and to improve SWCNT–fullerene bulk‐heterojunction morphology. Under optimized conditions, DIO elucidates the influence of SWCNT chiral distribution on overall device performance, revealing a tradeoff between short‐circuit current density and fill factor as a function of the chirality distribution present. The combination of SWCNT chirality distribution engineering and improved spatial homogeneity via solvent additives enables area‐scaling of SWCNT–fullerene solar cells with performance comparable to small‐area cells.  相似文献

Efficient conventional bulk heterojunction (BHJ) perovskite hybrid solar cells (pero‐HSCs) solution‐processed from a composite of CH3NH3PbI3 mixed with PC61BM ([6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester), where CH3NH3PbI3 acts as the electron donor and PC61BM acts as the electron acceptor, are reported for the first time. The efficiency of 12.78% is twofold enhancement in comparison with the conventional planar heterojunction pero‐HSCs (6.90%) fabricated by pristine CH3NH3PbI3. The BHJ pero‐HSCs are further optimized by using PC61BM/TiO2 bi‐electron‐extraction‐layer (EEL), which are both solution‐processed and then followed with low‐temperature thermal annealing. Due to higher electrical conductivity of PC61BM over that of TiO2, an efficiency of 14.98%, the highest reported efficiency for the pero‐HSCs without incorporating high‐temperature‐processed mesoporous TiO2 and Al2O3 as the EEL and insulating scaffold, is observed from PC61BM modified BHJ pero‐HSCs. Thus, the findings provide a simple way to approach high efficiency low‐cost pero‐HSCs.  相似文献
