We investigated responses toward novel foods and novel objects by wild capuchins that routinely exploit visitors' foods in Brasília National Park. Given the capuchins' daily exposure to human foods and objects, we expected them to be more explorative toward novel foods and objects compared to capuchins that are not habituated to visitors. However, since the safety and palatability of potential foods have to be learned, we also expected the capuchins to be cautious about eating novel foods, as has been reported for wild and captive capuchins. Stimuli were presented on a platform in four experimental conditions: familiar food (FF), novel food (NF), familiar food plus novel object (FF+O), and novel food plus novel object (NF+O). Latencies to approach and contact the platform, and to approach and to ingest food did not differ across conditions. Nevertheless, the capuchins were significantly more responsive (measured in terms of interest, manipulation, etc.) toward familiar foods than novel foods, and ate significantly more of the former. In other words, their explorative response toward novel foods led to little consumption. Our results do not support the "readiness to eat" hypothesis, according to which a lower readiness to eat and food neophobia are the consequences of the presence of a distracting novel object. The finding that capuchins explore novel stimuli but remain cautious about eating novel foods supports the view that neophilia and neophobia are motivationally independent responses.  相似文献

To examine the effect of novelty in food selection by fishes, goldfish were trained by feeding them on red or green food pellets. Individual fish and fish in shoals of two, three, and five were then given a choice between equal numbers of familiar pellets and novel (yellow) pellets. In experimental groups, the yellow pellets were soaked in 15% quinine hydrochloride to make them unpalatable. Fish were next presented with equal numbers of familiar and a second novel pellet. It was expected that fish would generalize from their experience with the unpalatable pellets and demonstrate avoidance to sampling a second novel food item. However, as groups, neither controls nor experimentals were reluctant to sample the second novel pellets. Also, fish did not eat significantly more familiar than novel pellets when both were palatable. A third set of experiments examined food preference transitivity in which each pellet type was presented alone and in three pair-wise combinations to individual fish. Although red and yellow pellets were preferred over green, they were preferred equally, indicating an absence of transitivity in pellet choice and, perhaps, a “preference” for a mixture of red and yellow pellets.  相似文献

Cattle establish strong preferential associations early in their life that determine the cohesiveness within a group and can diminish fear responses (i.e. social buffering). Mixing beef bulls at the beginning of fattening may lead to less cohesiveness. Moreover, mixing beef bulls induces aggressive interactions, especially when the bulls are of similar weights. This study was aimed at evaluating the cohesiveness and fear responses of 64 bulls that were either mixed versus unmixed and of homogeneous vs. heterogeneous body weights (2 × 2 factorial design, four groups of four bulls each per treatment). Social cohesiveness was assessed during food competition and a social separation test. Fear responses were observed during the social separation test and pre-slaughter handling. During food competition, unmixed bulls exchanged more non-agonistic interactions (P < 0.05) and were more tolerant with each other than mixed bulls (time spent eating: P < 0.05). Unmixed bulls displayed less fear responses during physical separation (elimination: P < 0.05; startle: P < 0.01) and were less stressed by pre-slaughter handling (blood cortisol: P < 0.05). Very few effects could be attributed to the homogeneity of weights within groups. It is concluded that mixing bulls at the beginning of fattening reduces the strength of positive social relationships and renders social buffering less effective during subsequent fattening. We recommend maintaining familiar bulls together throughout fattening in order to preserve cohesiveness within groups and for animals to benefit from social buffering during stressful situations.  相似文献

The effect of neophobia (fear of novelty) on feeding behaviour was examined in two groups of captive wild rats fed ad libitum. Different individuals employed different feeding patterns in response to novelty despite the absence of social and ecological constraints. The prevalent feeding pattern was to delay eating from a novel bowl several nights after it was introduced and, in general, novel food was sampled towards the end of a night. Systematic relationships (prandial correlations) were revealed in the meal pattern data which were consistent with the prediction that post-prandial correlations (controlled regular feeding bouts) are more likely in predictable environments. A large proportion of the individuals exhibited no prandial relationships which correlated with high levels of neophobia supporting the hypothesis that highly neophobic individuals are less able to regulate their feeding in the presence of novelty.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to characterize behavioural responses of male hamsters in each of three test contexts after they had experienced either a single social defeat or a neutral encounter. In experiment 1, hamsters were observed in a familiar social context (i.e., their home cages), and defeated males displayed different amounts of time and submissive behaviours towards a known opponent than a novel intruder, whereas males in the neutral-encounter groups did not show such differences. In experiment 2, in an unfamiliar social context (i.e., a Y-maze), defeated males generated submissive behaviours and fear memory towards a known opponent that they re-encountered 5-min and 24-h after the defeat. The formation of long-term memory was interrupted by an injection of anisomycin (210 mg/kg). In experiment 3, in a non-social, anxiogenic context, hamsters that had previously had different social experiences did not demonstrate additional anxiety in an elevated plus-maze, with the exception of males that had previously experienced repeated social defeats. Our data suggested that hamsters’ behavioural changes following defeat are context-dependent and stimulus-specific. The experience of a single social defeat is sufficient to regenerate submissive behaviours and fear memory when reencountering a known opponent.  相似文献

Genetic selection for appropriate levels of sociality (motivation to be with conspecifics) could benefit poultry welfare and performance. Runway tests that require chicks to traverse a corridor in order to reach other chicks in a goal box are commonly used to measure this behavioural trait. However, we need to determine if the chicks' responses in such tests are sensitive to certain experiential variables before we can recommend possible selection criteria for future breeding programmes. The present study focused on fear and on the identity of the stimulus birds. Broiler chicks either remained undisturbed or were exposed to an acute stressor (mechanical restraint) before their tonic immobility fear responses were measured 1h later in Experiment 1. Exposure to the stressor significantly prolonged tonic immobility and, hence, presumably, underlying fear levels. In Experiment 2, the responses of stressed chicks and undisturbed controls were assessed when they were tested individually in a runway with a goal box containing either familiar or unfamiliar chicks of the same age. Our finding that stressed chicks emerged from the start box sooner and spent longer near the stimulus birds suggests that exposure to a frightening event increased social reinstatement motivation. Furthermore, social affiliation was more pronounced when the goal box contained familiar cagemates rather than strange chicks, regardless of prior treatment. This finding demonstrates that broiler chicks that were housed in groups of twelve can discriminate between familiar and unfamiliar conspecifics encountered in novel surroundings. Thus, sociality was positively associated with fearfulness and broilers clearly showed social discrimination in runway tests. These findings highlight the dangers of disregarding variables, such as fear and the capacity for social recognition in tests of social motivation. We strongly recommend that exposure to frightening events prior to test should be avoided and that the identity of the birds in the runway goal box should be standardized, i.e. either familiar or unfamiliar, and noted.  相似文献

Hesitancy to eat novel foods hampers the immediate enlargement of the diet but serves to limit the risk of ingesting toxic foods. Neophobia has been systematically investigated in only a few primate species, in which it appears to be affected by social influences. Surprisingly, little is known about neophobia in chimpanzees. We studied the response of eight adult captive chimpanzees to 16 foods (foods commonly eaten by humans and never tasted before by chimpanzees). Each novel food was presented twice to the chimpanzee by a familiar or an unfamiliar human. Between the two trials the human ate the food face to face with the chimpanzee (demonstration). Results showed that some foods were almost unanimously accepted, whereas others were not. Moreover, there were marked interindividual differences in food acceptance and consumption; chimpanzees ranged from being almost completely neophobic to accepting almost all foods. Familiarity with the human and the human's demonstration did not affect responses to the foods. The humans' predictions concerning the chimpanzees' acceptance of the different foods were rather good; furthermore, in seven cases out of eight the humans' preferences did not correlate with their predictions on the chimpanzees' preferences. The finding that most captive chimpanzees are initially cautious toward novel foods supports the little information there is regarding this subject in wild chimpanzees. However, the lack of influence of the humans' familiarity and demonstration on the response to food by the chimpanzees calls for more naturalistic studies, in which social influences are provided by group members. Since novel stimuli provide sensory stimulation and elicit exploration and social interest, occasional presentation of novel foods could be a promising and cheap device for feeding enrichment. This study characterizes food neophobia in semi-free ranging rhesus macaques. In experiment one, monkeys received novel and familiar foods during periods of normal provisioning and when provisioning was suspended. The monkeys did discriminate between novel and familiar foods and continued to exhibit neophobia when provisioning was suspended. In experiment two, food was either tossed to subjects or placed in the habitat so that monkeys discovered food without the observer in close proximity. Rhesus macaques were more likely to eat a novel food that was hand-tossed to them compared to food they discovered in their habitat. This study suggests that food neophobia is a robust trait in rhesus macaques and that a history of provisioning may affect the expression of the trait.  相似文献

Social facilitation of eating familiar foods might serve to synchronize eating activities within groups. We aimed to assess whether capuchins (Cebus apella) are prompted to eat when observing other conspecifics eating a familiar food. Subjects were 8 male captive-born tufted capuchins. One pair of capuchins acted as demonstrators for the other 6 observer subjects. In the Experimental condition, the demonstrator pair was given fresh chow in addition to having access to the leftover food and ate continuously. In the Control condition, the demonstrator pair had access to food leftover from the morning feed and ate very little. The initiation of feeding by the demonstrator pair prompted the initiation of feeding behavior in the observers, and the latter ate significantly more of their leftovers in the Experimental than in the Control condition. The tempo ofthe social facilitation of eating familiar foods in capuchins supportisomorphic coordination, a process that occurs when one individuals activity focuses the attention of another individual to the same activity, thereby increasing behavioral similarity in a group.  相似文献

Although multiple leading papers in the behavioral immune system literature have proposed that food deprivation affects responses to pathogen cues, evidence supporting this proposition is scarce. Here, we report results from what we believe to be the most comprehensive test of the effects of hunger on responses to pathogen cues to date. Participants (N = 40) recruited from a Dutch university attended two experimental sessions, each following a 15-hour fast. One of the two sessions was conducted immediately after eating a standardized meal, and the other was conducted before eating that same standardized meal. In each session, participants rated 40 different images (i.e., images depicting food-related pathogen cues, food-unrelated pathogen cues, violence, positive stimuli, and neutral stimuli) on valence and arousal while their heart rate and skin conductance responses were recorded. They also indicated their willingness to eat 16 novel foods. Results did not reveal an effect of nutritional state on explicit ratings of and physiological reactions to food-related or food-unrelated pathogen cues. However, participants reported a greater willingness to eat novel foods when hungry than when sated. These results raise doubt regarding proposals that short-term changes in nutritional state influence responses to pathogen cues, but they suggest that these same changes increase willingness to eat novel foods.  相似文献

Animal personality research is receiving increasing interest from related fields, such as evolutionary personality psychology. By merging the conceptual understanding of personality, the contributions to both fields of research may be enhanced. In this study, we investigate animal personality based on the definition of personality traits as underlying dispositional factors, which are not directly measurable, but which predispose individuals to react through different behavioural patterns. We investigated the shyness-boldness continuum reflected in the consistency of inter-individual variation in behavioural responses towards novelty in 47 farmed American mink (Neovison vison), which were raised in identical housing conditions. Different stages of approach behaviour towards novelty, and how these related within and across contexts, were explored. Our experimental design contained four tests: two novel object tests (non-social contexts) and two novel animated stimuli tests (social contexts). Our results showed consistency in shyness measures across multiple tests, indicating the existence of personality in farmed American mink. It was found that consistency in shyness measures differs across non-social and social contexts, as well as across the various stages in the approach towards novel objects, revealing that different aspects of shyness exist in the farmed American mink. To our knowledge this is the first study to reveal aspects of the shyness-boldness continuum in the American mink. Since the mink were raised in identical housing conditions, inherited factors may have been important in shaping the consistent inter-individual variation. Body weight and sex had no effect on the personality of the mink. Altogether, our results suggest that the shyness-boldness continuum cannot be explained by a simple underlying dispositional factor, but instead encompasses a broader term of hesitating behaviour that might comprise several different personality traits.  相似文献

Chestnut-sided Warblers (Dendroica pensylvanica) show aversion to feeding at a familiar food source if placed next to a novel object. I have suggested that neophobia is an adaptation of specialized animals to reduce wasteful exploration. In this experiment I tested whether social facilitation mitigates the fear and decreases the latency to forage at a novel foraging site. As far as I know, the effect of social factors on neophobia has not been previously investigated. Because Chestnut-sided Warblers are intraspecifically solitary during the non-breeding season, I examined their response to novel foraging sites in the presence of a Bay-breasted Warbler (D. castanea) “trainer”. Chestnut-sided Warblers commonly join flocks with this more generalized and less neophobic congener. Chestnut-sided Warblers showed no tendency to feed in the presence of a Bay-breasted Warbler that is freely feeding from the unfamiliar microhabitat. Specialized animals may be more resistant to social facilitation and observational learning than more generalized species.  相似文献

Group housed pigs make less frequent feeder visits of longer duration, and eat at a faster rate than pigs housed individually. They also have lower growth rates which may be due to elevated stress levels resulting from changes in the concentrations of hormones, such as cortisol and adrenaline associated with aggression and social stress. The aim of this experiment was to investigate the effects of grouping on feeding pattern, time budgeting and the social behaviour of pigs kept as individuals from weaning until grouping. In total, 12 Large WhitexLandrace male pigs (four pigs per block) mean (+/-S.E.) start weight 22.5+/-0.7kg were housed individually for 3 weeks (Period 1) after which in two replicates (Blocks 1 and 3), pigs were combined into a group of four (Period 2) before being returned to individual housing for a further 3 weeks (Period 3). In Block 2, the four pigs remained as individuals across periods but were moved between pens at the end of Periods 1 and 2 to account for any pen effects. Feeding pattern and food intake were recorded throughout and pigs were weighed three times a week. Video recordings and live behavioural observations were made to record time budgets and social behaviour. Grouped pigs made less visits to the feeder in Period 2 than when they were housed individually in Periods 1 (P<0.001) and 3 (P<0.01). Visit duration was longer in Period 2 than in Periods 1 (P<0.01) and 3 (P<0.05). Food intake and weight gain were greater in Period 3 than in Periods 1 and 2 (P<0.001 and P<0.01, respectively). There were no significant effects of moving pigs between pens in Block 2 on feeding behaviour and timebudgets. In Period 2, grouped pigs slept more (P<0.01) and spent less time feeding (P<0.01) and rooting (P<0.01) than in Periods 1 and 3. The frequency of aggression decreased over time from mixing (P<0.001). Possible explanations for the changes in feeding behaviour when pigs are moved from individual to group housing are competition, group cohesion, or that the high frequency of feeder visits when the pigs are housed individually is a consequence of a lack of social stimulation. Of these different possibilities, the results suggest that group cohesion is most likely to have been causal in the observed changes in feeding behaviour.  相似文献

Previous research suggests that within social animals, subordinate individuals are less neophobic than dominant individuals. We investigated the effect of social status on neophobic responses using 10 captive coyote breeding pairs. Social status was determined from observations of feeding behavior and agonistic interactions during a series of reference trials. Once dominance was established, we surrounded an experimental area with novel stimuli (ropes adorned with interspersed flags) to create a novel context around a familiar food source. Contrary to hypotheses, dominant coyotes were first to feed, showed more interest toward novel stimuli, and eventually crossed the barrier, which subordinates never did. Our results indicate that dominant coyotes are less neophobic of novel settings that contain familiar food than subordinates are. Since a reduction in neophobia can be interpreted as an increase in risk taking, our results support previous observations that dominant (alpha) coyotes take more risks than subordinates. Our results also suggest reasons for differential observations of coyote behavior in the field: artificial selection against bold behavior in populations undergoing predator control.  相似文献

Background

Feeding innovation occurs when individuals choose a novel, unknown type of food and/or acquire new feeding skills. Here we studied feeding innovation and social transmission of the new feeding habit in canaries. Adult canaries eat a wide variety of seeds but avoid larger ones such as those of sunflowers. We determined whether adults of both sexes are equally prone to innovate when confronted with sunflower seeds and whether free-interactions facilitate transmission of the new feeding habit in a sex-dependent manner.

Methodology/Principal Findings

First we determined which sex was more innovative, i.e., was more successful at husking and eating the novel seeds. Males were clearly more innovative than females. Due to this, experienced males served as model for either male or female observers in three different conditions (free interaction with a demonstrator, visual interaction with a demonstrator placed behind a transparent wall and access to seeds in the presence of a non-demonstrating bird). During free interactions, the new feeding habit was only transmitted to females. In contrast, transmission of seed handling to male observers only occurred if demonstrator and observer were separated by the transparent wall. Indeed, aggressive behaviors between males prevented social transmission during free interactions. Finally, we studied the influence of the less innovative females in feeding-habit transmission. First, we obtained female demonstrators by making them freely interact with male demonstrators. Once they acquired innovative responses to sunflower seeds we studied feeding-habit transmission towards male and female observers. Observers of both sexes learned during free interactions with female demonstrators. No aggressive behavior occurred. Males were also able to learn after visual interactions with the female demonstrator.

Conclusions/Significance

Our results show that the most innovative individuals (males) are not always the best demonstrators, and that social relationship and sex are crucial factors for the spread of a new feeding habit among canaries. These factors determine the kind of interaction between individuals and the time spent together, thus affecting the transmission of novel habits within the population.  相似文献

We review the concepts and research associated with measuring fear and its consequences for foraging. When foraging, animals should and do demand hazardous duty pay. They assess a foraging cost of predation to compensate for the risk of predation or the risk of catastrophic injury. Similarly, in weighing foraging options, animals tradeoff food and safety. The foraging cost of predation can be modelled, and it can be quantitatively and qualitatively measured using risk titrations. Giving‐up densities (GUDs) in depletable food patches and the distribution of foragers across safe and risky feeding opportunities are two frequent experimental tools for titrating food and safety. A growing body of literature shows that: (i) the cost of predation can be big and comprise the forager's largest foraging cost, (ii) seemingly small changes in habitat or microhabitat characteristics can lead to large changes in the cost of predation, and (iii) a forager's cost of predation rises with risk of mortality, the forager's energy state and a decrease in its marginal value of energy. In titrating for the cost of predation, researchers have investigated spatial and temporal variation in risk, scale‐dependent variation in risk, and the role of predation risk in a forager's ecology. A risk titration from a feeding animal often provides a more accurate behavioural indicator of predation risk than direct observations of predator‐inflicted mortality. Titrating for fear responses in foragers has some well‐established applications and holds promise for novel methodologies, concepts and applications. Future directions for expanding conceptual and empirical tools include: what are the consequences of foraging costs arising from interference behaviours and other sources of catastrophic loss? Are there alternative routes by which organisms can respond to tradeoffs of food and safety? What does an animal's landscape of fear look like as a spatially explicit map, and how do various environmental factors affect it? Behavioural titrations will help to illuminate these issues and more.  相似文献

The main aim of this study was to verify if the response to novel foods in common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is influenced by different social settings. This question was tested in three tests involving four social groups. The data regarding the response to novel foods were collected from a total of eight food-naive young. In particular, we explored if direct contacts between food-naive and experienced individuals would have a different effect on the response to novel food by the first, in comparison with a situation in which only visual contacts were allowed. These two different social settings were then compared to a situation in which the response to novel food was not mediated by the experience of group-mates. The results showed a significantly higher number of intervals in which naive young, in social settings, were observed feeding compared with a control test. However, this result was confirmed only in the case of novel foods, not in the case of familiar foods. Furthermore, in the tests in which direct social contacts were allowed, naive young obtained food from group-mates significantly more often in the case of novel than familiar foods. This study suggests that although naive young, when left in pairs, responded quickly to novel foods without the need to observe or interact with experienced group-mates, a process of social facilitation was evident. Such a process was not observed in the case of familiar foods, confirming the hypothesis that social facilitation operates in order to acquire novel foods in the diet of the group in the long term.  相似文献

Merino weaners with no prior experience of eating wheat or of feeding in troughs were used to study their behavioural responses to novel situations and to the speed with which they learnt to eat wheat. Two groups of 8 sheep grazing on pasture were individually penned and fed in troughs for 15 min/day for 20 days. Group 1 was given wheat every day, whilst Group 2 received hay for the first 12 days and then wheat for the next 8 days. It took 14 days for all sheep in Group 1 to begin eating wheat, but 6 of Group 2 ate wheat 2 days after it was first offered. The results suggest there may be 3 phases in sheep learning to eat wheat. It seems that sheep must overcome fear of the trough and of the wheat. Finally, they must learn to prehend, chew and swallow wheat.  相似文献

Palatability of plant foods may change over time in relation to the concentration of toxic secondary metabolites. We investigated the behavioural response of capuchin monkeys to this type of change and assessed the influence of social conditions. Twenty-seven tufted capuchin monkeys were presented in Social or Individual conditions with a familiar palatable food (phase 1), with the same familiar food to which pepper had been added, making it unpalatable (phase 2), and with the same familiar palatable food of phase 1 (phase 3). Five sessions were carried out in each phase. The capuchins adapted quickly to the change in food palatability by reducing (phase 2) and increasing (phase 3) the amounts of food eaten. The unpalatable food prompted an increase in olfactory exploration and in food processing. The experimental conditions (Social versus Individual) did not influence consumption, or any of the other behaviours. In addition, capuchins were more often near subjects with food in phases 2 and 3 in which palatability changed than in phase 1. These findings show that capuchins readily adjust to changes in flavour and palatability of a familiar food and that sudden unpalatability has no carry-over effects. Therefore, capuchins behave differently towards a familiar food whose palatability has changed than they do towards novel foods.
