To establish new techniques for automatic classification of rhizosphere components, we investigated the utility of visible (VIS) and near–infrared (NIR) spectral images of the rhizosphere under two soil moisture conditions (mean volumetric water content: 0.39 and 0.16 cm3 cm?3). Spectral reflectance images of the belowground parts of hybrid poplar cuttings (Populus deltoides × P. euramericana, I45/51) grown in a rhizobox were recorded at 120 spectral bands ranging from 480 to 972 nm. We examined which wavelengths were suitable and the number of spectral bands needed to accurately classify live roots of four age classes, dead roots, leaf mold, and soil. VIS reflectance (<700 nm) of live roots first increased and then decreased with age, whereas NIR reflectance (≥700 nm) was stable in mature roots. The reflectance of dead roots was lower than that of mature roots in both the VIS and NIR spectral regions. VIS reflectance did not differ among dead roots, leaf mold, and soil, but the NIR reflectance was clearly lower in soil than in the other materials. The reflectance of leaf mold and soil increased mainly in the NIR spectral region with reducing soil moisture, but this increase did not affect the order of reflectance intensity among the rhizosphere components in general. Although the most suitable spectral bands statistically selected for classifying rhizosphere components differed somewhat between moist and dry conditions, the spectral bands 580–679 nm (VIS) and 848–894 nm (NIR) provided high reliability under both conditions. Classification accuracy was higher when using two to five VIS–NIR images (overall accuracy ≥87.8%) than three VIS images (red, green, and blue; accuracy <67.1%). The high accuracy with VIS–NIR was mainly due to successful separation of leaf mold and soil. Irrespective of soil moisture condition, the overall accuracy tended to be stable at 92–94% with use of four VIS–NIR images. The spectral bands effective in wet soil conditions could also be used for classification in dry conditions, with overall accuracies >86.9%. These results suggest that automatic image analysis using VIS–NIR images at four spectral bands, including red and NIR, allows for accurate classification of the growth stage or live/dead status of roots and distinguishes between leaf mold and soil.  相似文献

Soil organic carbon is a key soil property related to soil fertility, aggregate stability and the exchange of CO2 with the atmosphere. Existing soil maps and inventories can rarely be used to monitor the state and evolution in soil organic carbon content due to their poor spatial resolution, lack of consistency and high updating costs. Visible and Near Infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy is an alternative method to provide cheap and high-density soil data. However, there are still some uncertainties on its capacity to produce reliable predictions for areas characterized by large soil diversity. Using a large-scale EU soil survey of about 20,000 samples and covering 23 countries, we assessed the performance of reflectance spectroscopy for the prediction of soil organic carbon content. The best calibrations achieved a root mean square error ranging from 4 to 15 g C kg−1 for mineral soils and a root mean square error of 50 g C kg−1 for organic soil materials. Model errors are shown to be related to the levels of soil organic carbon and variations in other soil properties such as sand and clay content. Although errors are ∼5 times larger than the reproducibility error of the laboratory method, reflectance spectroscopy provides unbiased predictions of the soil organic carbon content. Such estimates could be used for assessing the mean soil organic carbon content of large geographical entities or countries. This study is a first step towards providing uniform continental-scale spectroscopic estimations of soil organic carbon, meeting an increasing demand for information on the state of the soil that can be used in biogeochemical models and the monitoring of soil degradation.  相似文献

The world's soils contain about 1500 Gt of organic carbon to a depth of 1m and a further 900 Gt from 1--2m. A change of total soil organic carbon by just 10% would thus be equivalent to all the anthropogenic CO2 emitted over 30 years. Warming is likely to increase both the rate of decomposition and net primary production (NPP), with a fraction of NPP forming new organic carbon. Evidence from various sources can be used to assess whether NPP or the rate of decomposition has the greater temperature sensitivity, and, hence, whether warming is likely to lead to an increase or decrease in soil organic carbon.Evidence is reviewed from laboratory-based incubations, field measurements of organic carbon storage, carbon isotope ratios and soil respiration with either naturally varying temperatures or after experimentally increasing soil temperatures. Estimates of terrestrial carbon stored at the Last Glacial Maximum are also reviewed. The review concludes that the temperature dependence of organic matter decomposition can be best described as: d(T) = exp[3.36 (T – 40)/(T + 31.79)] where d(T) is the normalised decomposition rate at temperature T (in °C). In this equation, decomposition rate is normalised to 1 at 40 °C.The review concludes by simulating the likely changes in soil organic carbon with warming. In summary, it appears likely that warming will have the effect of reducing soil organic carbon by stimulating decomposition rates more than NPP. However, increasing CO2 is likely to simultaneously have the effect of increasing soil organic carbon through increases in NPP. Any changes are also likely to be very slow. The net effect of changes in soil organic carbon on atmospheric CO2 loading over the next decades to centuries is, therefore, likely to be small.  相似文献

Aims

This study aimed to compare stepwise multiple linear regression (SMLR), partial least squares regression (PLSR) and support vector machine regression (SVMR) for estimating soil total nitrogen (TN) contents with laboratory visible/near-infrared reflectance (Vis/NIR) of selected coarse and heterogeneous soils. Moreover, the effects of the first (1st) vs. second (2nd) derivative of spectral reflectance and the importance wavelengths were explored.

Methods

The TN contents and the Vis/NIR were measured in the laboratory. Several methods were employed for Vis/NIR data pre-processing. The SMLR, PLSR and SVMR models were calibrated and validated using independent datasets.

Results

Results showed that the SVMR and the PLSR models had similar performances, and better performances than the SMLR. The spectral bands near 1450, 1850, 2250, 2330 and 2430 nm in the PLSR model were important wavelengths. In addition, the 1st derivative was more appropriate than the 2nd derivative for spectral data pre-processing.

Conclusions

PLSR was the most suitable method for estimating TN contents in this study. SVMR may be a promising technique, and its potential needs to be further explored. Moreover, the future studies using outdoor and airborne/satellite hyperspectral data for estimating TN content are necessary for testing the findings.  相似文献

Aims

To determine the effect of grassland degradation on the soil carbon pool in alpine grassland.

Methods

In this study, we calculated the carbon pool in the above-and below-ground biomass, the soil microbial biomass carbon pool, the total organic carbon pool and the soil total carbon.

Results

Grassland degradation has resulted in decreases in biomass and carbon content and has changed the ratio of roots to shoots. However, there was less influence of degradation on dead root biomass. There was most likely a lag effect of changes in dead root biomass following grassland degradation. In the alpine grassland ecosystem, the carbon pool in soil accounts for more than 92 % of the total carbon both in vegetation and soil. The carbon in alpine grassland is stored primarily in the form of total organic carbon below-ground. As organic carbon decreases, the ratio of the microbial biomass carbon pool to the total organic carbon pool increases and then declines with increasing degradation level. Along the grassland degradation gradient, the total vegetation biomass (above-and below-ground) and the soil carbon pool (microbial biomass C, total organic C and total C) all decreased.  相似文献

Adjusting fertiliser applications to within-field variations in nitrogen (N) mineralisation during the growing season can increase yields, improve crop quality, reduce costs and decrease nutrient losses to the environment. Predicting such variations at a reasonable cost is therefore important. In a 3-year study, Near Infrared Reflectance (NIR) spectroscopy was compared with soil organic matter (SOM) and clay content as predictors of plant N uptake using cross-validated PLS (Partial Least Squares) regression models. Plant N uptake was measured as total nitrogen in aboveground plant parts at harvest, in plots without N fertilisation within three different fields in southern Sweden. NIR spectroscopy and combined clay and SOM content resulted in equally good estimations of plant N uptake in fields with large variation in SOM content. Cross-validated NIR calibrations for plant N uptake within fields for separate years resulted in r 2 values of 0.75–0.85 and average cross-validation errors of 11–16 kg N ha−1 for two fields (1 year excluded at one field because of farmyard manure application). No significant improvements were seen when NIR-spectra, clay and SOM were included in the same model, suggesting that the additional predictive capacity of NIR over SOM relates to soil texture variations. NIR calibrations also performed poorly in one field where plant N uptake could not be explained by SOM or clay content. Predictions within fields between years produced r 2 values of 0.56–0.89 and prediction errors of 12–26 kg N ha−1 for one field. These results confirm that N uptake prediction accuracy can be improved by using NIR spectroscopy in fields with large SOM variations. However, good estimations could not be made between fields, indicating difficulties in creating more general calibration models for large geographical areas.  相似文献

Summary C14 and N15 doubly labelled alfalfa tissue at addition rates of 5 and 1 ton per acre was incubated in the laboratory for 72 days with virgin and cultivated Brookston silt loam. The alfalfa tissue was more extensively decomposed in the virgin soils than in cultivated soil, but retention of tissue carbon was not affected by rate of addition. Percentage decomposition of organic matter in the virgin soil was greater than that in the cultivated soil. Addition of alfalfa tissue reduced decomposition of soil organic matter in proportion to the rate of addition and resulted in a gain of carbon in the incubation mixture. No priming action was noted. An increase in the rate of tissue addition caused an increase in the amount of nitrogen mineralized from the tissue but had little effect on the amount of nitrogen mineralized from the soil. Nitrogen mineralized from the soil organic matter was preferentially immobilized during the latter part of the incubation period. It appears that the organic matter content of the soil as well as the rate of tissue addition may regulate the priming action of green manures.Published with approval of the Director, Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station as Journal Paper No.94-62.  相似文献

Forest management with N-fixing trees can improve soil fertility and tree productivity, but have little information regarding belowground carbon processes and microbial properties. We aimed to evaluate the effects of three forest management regimes, which were Erythrophleum fordii (N-fixing tree), Pinus massoniana (non-N-fixing tree), and their mixed forest, on soil respiration and microbial community composition in subtropical China, using Barometric Process Separation and phospholipid fatty acid profiles, respectively. We found that the inclusions of N-fixing species in forests significantly increased the soil respiration, but have no effects on SOC and ecosystem total C stock. In addition, soil microbial communities were obviously different among the three forest management regimes. For instance, total and bacterial PLFAs were higher in the E. fordii and mixed forest than in the P. massoniana forest. Conversely, fungal PLFAs in the P. massoniana forest were elevated versus the other two forests. Soil total N, nitrate-N and pH were the key determinants shaping the microbial community composition. Our study suggests that variations in soil respiration in the studied forests could be primarily explained by the differences of root biomass and soil microbial biomass, but not soil organic carbon. Although soil fertility and microbial biomass were promoted, N-fixing plantings also brought on increased CO2 emissions in laboratory assays. The future decision of tree species selection for forest management in subtropical China therefore needs to consider the potential influences of tree species on CO2 emissions.  相似文献

We compared data on the extent of bioremediation in soils polluted with oil. The data were obtained using conventional methods of hydrocarbon determination: extraction gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, extraction IR spectroscopy, and extraction gravimetry. Due to differences in the relative abundances of the stable carbon isotopes (13C/12C) in oil and in soil organic matter, these ratios could be used as natural isotopic labels of either substance. Extraction gravimetry in combination with characteristics of the carbon isotope composition of organic products in the soil before and after bioremediation was shown to be the most informative approach to an evaluation of soil bioremediation. At present, it is the only method enabling quantification of the total petroleum hydrocarbons in oil-polluted soil, as well as of the amounts of hydrocarbons remaining after bioremediation and those microbially transformed into organic products and biomass.  相似文献

The biological activity in organic soil layers under spruce was determined by measuring rates of carbon dioxide emission. Under laboratory conditions, biological activity was found to be optimal at temperatures ranging from 20°C to 35°C and at water contents ranging from 40% to 60%. Weakly acidic to neutral pH values of organic materials stimulated microbial CO2 formation whereas high acidity (pH<2.4) inhibited it. Low CO2 emission rates were observed at pH<2.4 and therefore populations of microorganisms highly resistant to acid must be present in the organic materials. The OL horizon was found to contribute 50% of the total potential C-mineralization with the lower horizons OF and OH contributing 25% each. In simulating acid rain experiments, analysis of water percolating through the organic layers was shown to cause constant leaching of cations at the pH 3 to 6.5 range. In this respect, the OL horizon exerts a buffering effect. It can be postulated that the acidification of soil organic material under spruce by acid rain inhibits C-mineralization and decreases the release of mineral nutrients. In the long run this can be expected to affect the turnover of mineral nutrients in forest ecosystems.  相似文献

Fluxes of dissolved organic matter (DOM) are an important vector for the movement of carbon (C) and nutrients both within and between ecosystems. However, although DOM fluxes from throughfall and through litterfall can be large, little is known about the fate of DOM leached from plant canopies, or from the litter layer into the soil horizon. In this study, our objectives were to determine the importance of plant-litter leachate as a vehicle for DOM movement, and to track DOM decomposition [including dissolve organic carbon (DOC) and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) fractions], as well as DOM chemical and isotopic dynamics, during a long-term laboratory incubation experiment using fresh leaves and litter from several ecosystem types. The water-extractable fraction of organic C was high for all five plant species, as was the biodegradable fraction; in most cases, more than 70% of the initial DOM was decomposed in the first 10 days of the experiment. The chemical composition of the DOM changed as decomposition proceeded, with humic (hydrophobic) fractions becoming relatively more abundant than nonhumic (hydrophilic) fractions over time. However, in spite of proportional changes in humic and nonhumic fractions over time, our data suggest that both fractions are readily decomposed in the absence of physicochemical reactions with soil surfaces. Our data also showed no changes in the 13C signature of DOM during decomposition, suggesting that isotopic fractionation during DOM uptake is not a significant process. These results suggest that soil microorganisms preferentially decompose more labile organic molecules in the DOM pool, which also tend to be isotopically heavier than more recalcitrant DOM fractions. We believe that the interaction between DOM decomposition dynamics and soil sorption processes contribute to the 13C enrichment of soil organic matter commonly observed with depth in soil profiles. published online 2004  相似文献

The clearing of tropical forest for pasture leads to important changes in soil organic carbon (C) stocks and cycling patterns. We used the naturally occurring distribution of13C in soil organic matter (SOM) to examine the roles of forest- and pasture-derived organic matter in the carbon balance in the soils of 3- to 81-year-old pastures created following deforestation in the western Brazilian Amazon Basin state of Rondônia. Different 13C values of C3 forest-derived C (-28) and C4 pasture-derived C (-13) allowed determination of the origin of total soil C and soil respiration. The 13C of total soil increased steadily across ecosystems from -27.8 in the forest to -15.8 in the 81-year-old pasture and indicated a replacement of forest-derived C with pasture-derived C. The 13C of respired CO2 increased more rapidly from -26.5 in the forest to -17 in the 3- to 13-year-old pastures and indicated a faster shift in the origin of more labile SOM. In 3-year-old pasture, soil C derived from pasture grasses made up 69% of respired C but only 17% of total soil C in the top 10 cm. Soils of pastures 5 years old and older had higher total C stocks to 30 cm than the original forest. This occurred because pasture-derived C in soil organic matter increased more rapidly than forest-derived C was lost. The increase of pasture-derived C in soils of young pastures suggests that C inputs derived from pasture grasses play a critical role in development of soil C stocks in addition to fueling microbial respiration. Management practices that promote high grass production will likely result in greater inputs of grass-derived C to pasture soils and will be important for maintaining tropical pasture soil C stocks.  相似文献

The potential of visible (VIS) and near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy for identifying seed sources and parents of Pinus sylvestris L. was studied. Seeds of a single family (clones AC1005 × BD1178) collected from three localities in Sweden—Sävar (north), Röskär (central) and Degeberga (south)—and seeds from four maternal (clone no. BD1032, AC1014, BD1178 and AC1005) and four paternal (Y3020, BD1178, AC1014 and BD1032) parents were used to evaluate the method. VIS and NIR reflectance spectra were recorded on individual seeds using a NIRSystems Model 6500 spectrometer from 400 to 2,498 nm with a resolution of 2 nm. The VIS + NIR spectroscopic data were pre-treated with multiplicative signal correction, and analysed by soft independent modelling of class analogy (SIMCA) and partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). The computed models were later applied to classify samples in the external test sets. The results show that seed sources were identified with 100% classification accuracy using PLS-DA models in the VIS + NIR, VIS and NIR regions. The average classification accuracy for maternal parents ranged from 92% to 96%, while paternal parents were identified with 91.2–96% accuracies. The classification accuracy using the SIMCA approach was relatively low for seed sources as well as maternal and paternal parents. It can be concluded that VIS + NIR spectroscopy could be employed as a rapid and non-destructive method for monitoring putative seed sources. The result underscores the prospect of the technique for characterizing seeds based on genotype, thereby serving as a tool in tree improvement and breeding.  相似文献

Aims

Dehesas are agroforestry systems characterized by scattered trees among pastures, crops and/or fallows. A study at a Spanish dehesa has been carried out to estimate the spatial distribution of the soil organic carbon stock and to assess the influence of the tree cover.

Methods

The soil organic carbon stock was estimated from the five uppermost cm of the mineral soil with high spatial resolution at two plots with different grazing intensities. The Universal Kriging technique was used to assess the spatial distribution of the soil organic carbon stocks, using tree coverage within a buffering area as an auxiliary variable.

Results

A significant positive correlation between tree presence and soil organic carbon stocks up to distances of around 8 m from the trees was found. The tree crown cover within a buffer up to a distance similar to the crown radius around the point absorbed 30 % of the variance in the model for both grazing intensities, but residual variance showed stronger spatial autocorrelation under regular grazing conditions.

Conclusions

Tree cover increases soil organic carbon stocks, and can be satisfactorily estimated by means of crown parameters. However, other factors are involved in the spatial pattern of the soil organic carbon distribution. Livestock plays an interactive role together with tree presence in soil organic carbon distribution.  相似文献

Different methods for estimating the non-fertilizer N supply (NFNS) of mineral grassland soils were compared. NFNS was defined as the N uptake on unfertilized plots. The potential mineralization rate (0–12 weeks), macroorganic matter and active microbial biomass (determined by the substrate-induced respiration method; SIR) were correlated positively with NFNS. The difference between the actual soil organic N or microbial N content (determined by the fumigation incubation method) and their contents under equilibrium conditions ( org. N and MB-N), however, gave the best estimations of NFNS. For field conditions the best estimation for NFNS was: NFNS (kg N ha–1 yr–1)=132.3+42.1× org. N (g kg–1 soil; r=0.80). This method is based on the observation that, under old grassland swards, close relationships exist between soil texture and the amounts of soil organic N and microbial N. These relationships are assumed to represent equilibrium conditions as under old swards under constant management, the gain in soil organic N and microbial N equals the losses. Soils under young grassland and recently reclaimed soils contained less soil organic N and microbial N. In such soils the amounts of organic N and microbial N increase with time, which is reflected in a lower NFNS. The annual accumulation of organic and microbial N gradually becomes smaller until organic N, microbial N and NFNS reach equilibrium. The main advantage of the difference method in comparison with the other methods is its speed and simplicity.FAX no: +31 50337291  相似文献

A proteomic fingerprint of dissolved organic carbon and of soil particles   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9
Mass spectrometry-based proteomics was applied to analyze proteins isolated from dissolved organic matter (DOM). The focal question was to identify the type and biological origin of proteins in DOM, and to describe diversity of protein origin at the level of higher taxonomic units, as well as to detect extracellular enzymes possibly important in the carbon cycle. Identified proteins were classified according to their phylogenetic origin and metabolic function using the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) protein and taxonomy database. Seventy-eight percent of the proteins in DOM from the lake but less than 50% in forest soil DOM originated from bacteria. In a deciduous forest, the number of identified proteins decreased from 75 to 28 with increasing soil depth and decreasing total soil organic carbon content. The number of identified proteins and taxonomic groups was 50% higher in winter than in summer. In spruce forest, number of proteins and taxonomic groups decreased by 50% on a plot where trees had been girdled a year before and carbohydrate transport to roots was terminated. After girdling, proteins from four taxonomic groups remained as compared to nine taxonomic groups in healthy forest. Enzymes involved in degradation of organic matter were not identified in free soil DOM. However, cellulases and laccases were found among proteins extracted from soil particles, indicating that degradation of soil organic matter takes place in biofilms on particle surfaces. These results demonstrate a novel application of proteomics to obtain a proteomic fingerprint of presence and activity of organisms in an ecosystem. This revised version was published online in December 2004 with corrections to Figs.1-4  相似文献

This study gives an insight into the source of organic carbon and nitrogen in the Godavari river and its tributaries, the yield of organic carbon from the catchment, seasonal variability in their concentration and the ultimate flux of organic and inorganic carbon into the Bay of Bengal. Particulate organic carbon/particulate organic nitrogen (POC/PON or C/N) ratios revealed that the dominant source of organic matter in the high season is from the soil (C/N = 8–14), while in the rest of the seasons, the river-derived (in situ) phytoplankton is the major source (C/N = l–8). Amount of organic materials carried from the lower catchment and flood plains to the oceans during the high season are 3 to 91 times higher than in the moderate and low seasons. Large-scale erosion and deforestation in the catchment has led to higher net yield of organic carbon in the Godavari catchment when compared to other major world rivers. The total flux of POC, and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) from the Godavari river to the Bay of Bengal is estimated as 756 × 109 and 2520 × 109 g yr–1, respectively. About 22% of POC is lost in the main channel because of oxidation of labile organic matter, entrapment of organic material behind dams/sedimentation along flood plains and river channel; the DIC fluxes as a function of alkalinity are conservative throughout the river channel. Finally, the C/N ratios (12) of the ultimate fluxes of particulate organic carbon suggest the dominance of refractory/stable soil organic matter that could eventually get buried in the coastal sediments on a geological time scale.  相似文献

Large increases in nitrogen (N) inputs to terrestrial ecosystems typically have small effects on immediate N outputs because most N is sequestered in soil organic matter. We hypothesized that soil organic N storage and the asynchrony between N inputs and outputs result from rapid accumulation of N in stable soil organic pools. We used a successional sequence on floodplains of the Tanana River near Fairbanks, Alaska to assess rates of stable N accumulation in soils ranging from 1 to 500+ years old. One-year laboratory incubations with repeated leaching separated total soil N into labile (defined as inorganic N leached) and stable (defined as total minus labile N) pools. Stable N pools increased faster (2 g N m–2 yr–1) than labile N (0.4 g N m–2 yr–1) pools during the first 50 years of primary succession; labile N then plateaued while stable and total N continued to increase. Soil C pools showed similar trends, and stable N was correlated with stable C (r2 = 0.95). From 84 to 95 % of soil N was stable during our incubations. Over successional time, the labile N pool declined as a proportion of total N, but remained large on an aerial basis (up to 38 g N m–2). The stoichiometry of stable soil N changed over successional time; C:N ratios increased from 10 to 22 over 275 years (r2 = 0.69). A laboratory 15N addition experiment showed that soils had the capacity to retain much more N than accumulated naturally during succession. Our results suggest that most soil N is retained in a stable organic pool that can accumulate rapidly but is not readily accessible to microbial mineralization. Because stable soil organic matter and total ecosystem organic matter have flexible stoichiometry, net ecosystem production may be a poor predictor of N retention on annual time scales.  相似文献

Carbonate and total organic carbon stable isotope analyses of the Upper Permian and Lower Triassic succession in the Masore section in western Slovenia indicate a high storage of organic matter during the Upper Permian, as well as the well known worldwide light carbon isotope event across the P/Tr boundary. The perturbations in the global carbon cycle observed in the investigated section span an approximately 50 cm thick interval (from –11 cm below to +41 cm above the lithostratigraphically determined P/Tr boundary), and coincide more or less with changes in lithology, as well as with an abrupt disappearance of Upper Permian marine fauna. In this section changes in the sedimentary environment are most probably related to Upper Permian—Lower Triassic sea level changes. The carbonate and organic carbon negative peak anomaly could be explained by accelerated changes in the end Permian carbon cycle, due to some co-occurring events, such as pronounced erosion and oxidation of organic carbon, a possible release of methane from stored hydrates, and volcanic activity, as well as by a sudden reduction in primary productivity triggered by not yet completely satisfactorily explained mechanisms.  相似文献
