A series of laboratory-based and field experiments was conducted to address the effects of sunlight-exposed resuspended sediments on dissolved nutrient fluxes in two different water bodies. In suspensions of tidal creek sediments in 0.2 μm-filtered creek water, measurable increases in dissolved nutrients occurred after only 2 h of exposure to simulated sunlight. During a 6-h irradiation, nutrient release rates for total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) and phosphate were 2.2 ± 0.5 (standard error; S.E.) μmol g?1 h?1 and 0.09 ± 0.005 μmol g?1 h?1 (S.E.), compared to no significant changes in dark controls. The majority of nitrogen was released as dissolved organic nitrogen (87% on average) with lesser amounts of ammonium (13%). Continental shelf sediments resuspended in unfiltered seawater also released phosphate and TDN when exposed to sunlight, suggesting that this process can occur in a variety of marine and estuarine environments. The source material for inorganic nutrients appears to be associated with sediments rather than dissolved organic matter, as no significant changes in nutrient concentrations occurred in experiments with 0.2 μm-filtered creek water or seawater alone. Results suggest that photoproduction of dissolved nutrients from resuspended sediments could be an episodically significant and previously unrecognized source of dissolved organic and inorganic nutrients to coastal ecosystems. This process may be especially important for continental margins where episodic resuspension events occur, as well as in regions experiencing high riverine sediment fluxes resulting from erosion associated with deforestation and desertification.  相似文献

At the Harvard Forest, Massachusetts, a long-term effort is under way to study responses in ecosystem biogeochemistry to chronic inputs of N in atmospheric deposition in the region. Since 1988, experimental additions of NH4NO3 (0, 5 and 15 g N m–2 yr–1) have been made in two forest stands:Pinus resinosa (red pine) and mixed hardwood. In the seventh year of the study, we measured solute concentrations and estimated solute fluxes in throughfall and at two soil depths, beneath the forest floors (Oa) and beneath the B horizons.Beneath the Oa, concentrations and fluxes of dissolved organic C and N (DOC and DON) were higher in the coniferous stand than in the hardwood stand. The mineral soil exerted a strong homogenizing effect on concentrations beneath the B horizons. In reference plots (no N additions), DON composed 56% (pine) and 67% (hardwood) of the total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) transported downward from the forest floor to the mineral soil, and 98% of the TDN exported from the solums. Under N amendments, fluxes of DON from the forest floor correlated positively with rates of N addition, but fluxes of inorganic N from the Oa exceeded those of DON. Export of DON from the solums appeared unaffected by 7 years of N amendments, but as in the Oa, DON composed smaller fractions of TDN exports under N amendments. DOC fluxes were not strongly related to N amendment rates, but ratios of DOC:DON often decreased. The hardwood forest floor exhibited a much stronger sink for inorganic N than did the pine forest floor, making the inputs of dissolved N to mineral soil much greater in the pine stand. Under the high-N treatment, exports of inorganic N from the solum of the pine stand were increased >500-fold over reference (5.2 vs. 0.01 g N m–2 yr–1), consistent with other manifestations of nitrogen saturation. Exports of N from the solum in the pine forest decreased in the order NO3-N> NH4-N> DON, with exports of inorganic N 14-fold higher than exports of DON. In the hardwood forest, in contrast, increased sinks for inorganic N under N amendments resulted in exports of inorganic N that remained lower than DON exports in N-amended plots as well as the reference plot.  相似文献

Spatio-temporal distribution of nitrogen was examined along the gradient from open water to lakeshore in Lake Taihu, China. Two types of undulating littoral zones were selected: natural reed belt and bare lakeshore. The reed belt affected nitrogen transformation and was sink for internal-lake nitrogen, whereas the bare lakeshore showed little effect. During the growing season, NO 3 -N concentration increased by up to 3–5 times from open water to reed belt, while NH 4 + -N concentration decreased. It suggested that nitrification was the main nitrogen process in reed belt. Total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) showed little spatial variation, indicating that most of nitrogen released from sediment did not move into open water again. Significant temporal variation of dissolved nitrogen occurred and was similar in both the littoral zone and the open water. Maximum TDN and NH 4 + -N concentrations occurred in January, and NO 3 -N in March. Minimum NH 4 + -N and NO 3 -N concentrations occurred in July and August, respectively. An increasing total soil nitrogen was found in the surface sediments from reed belt to open water. This further suggested that the reed-covered littoral zone had strong nitrogen transformation potential.  相似文献

Abstract A principle of the cross-scale interaction (CSI) framework is that disturbance-induced landscape changes resulting in coarser-grained spatial structure may non-linearly amplify transfer processes across scales. We studied suspended sediment losses at two spatial scales (0.24 m2 plots and ca. 0.25 ha hillslopes of about 140 m in length) in a semiarid savanna landscape to determine whether the spatial structure of grassy and bare soil areas introduced a non-linear amplification of sediment loss. Sediment loss rates from 0.24 m2 bare plots averaged 1.527 t ha−1 y−1, which was 23 times the loss rate from nearby grassy plots (0.066 t ha−1 y−1). These rates were then extrapolated linearly to two hillslopes separated by only 200 m and having similar total grass cover, slope and soil type but differing in the spatial structure of bare soil patches. The coarse-grained hillslope had a large bare patch on its lower slope, whereas the fine-grained hillslope had no bare soil patches when quantified at a 4 m grid-cell resolution. Measured sediment loss from the fine-grained hillslope averaged 0.050 t ha−1 y−1, whereas the average sediment loss from the coarse-grained hillslope was 2.133 t ha−1 y−1. By linearly extrapolating from the plot scale, the expected sediment loss for the fine-grained hillslope was 0.066 t ha−1 y−1, which is similar to that observed. The expected sediment loss for the coarse-grained hillslope was 0.855 t ha−1 y−1, where linear extrapolation assumed a 46:54 ratio of bare to grassy plots and that the spatial arrangement of plots does not affect sediment loss processes. For the coarse-grained hillslope observed sediment loss is 2.5 times greater than that expected by linear extrapolation from the plot scale. This result indicates a cross-scale interaction related to spatial configuration of patches. We suggest that there were non-linearities in hillslope ecohydrological transfer processes (runoff, erosion) across scales due to a specific patch configuration that greatly amplified sediment loss because the pattern failed to slow runoff and retain sediment before it entered a creek. This example supports the CSI framework and indicates the importance of considering the effect of spatial structure when predicting system dynamics at different scales.  相似文献

Coastal marshes represent an important transitional zone between uplands and estuaries. One important function of marshes is to assimilate nutrient inputs from uplands, thus providing a buffer for anthropogenic nutrient loads. We examined the effects of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilization on biogeochemical and microbial processes during the summer growing season in a Spartina patens (Aiton (Muhl.)) marsh in the Narragansett Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve on Prudence Island (RI). Quadruplicate 1 m2 plots were fertilized with N and P additions, N-only, P-only, or no additions. N-only addition significantly stimulated bacterial production and increased pore water NH4+ and NO3 concentrations. Denitrification rates ranged from 0 to 8 mmol m−2 day−1. Fertilization had no apparent effect on soil oxygen consumption or denitrification measured in the summer in intact cores due to high core-to-core variation. P fertilization led to increased pore water dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) concentrations and increased DIP release from soils. In contrast the control and N-only treatments had significant DIP uptake across the soil-water interface. The results suggest that in the summer fertilization has no apparent effect on denitrification rates, stimulates bacterial productivity, enhances pore water nutrient concentrations and alters some nutrient fluxes across the marsh surface.  相似文献

In this study biogeochemical export in a set of catchments that vary from 6 ha to almost 1500 ha is investigated. Studying catchments across this large range of scales enables us to investigate the scale dependence and fundamental processes controlling catchment biogeochemical export that would not have been possible with a more limited data set. The Devil Canyon catchment, in the San Bernardino Mountains, California, has some of the highest atmospheric N deposition rates in the world (40–90 kg ha−1year−1 at the crest of the catchment). These high rates of deposition have translated into consistently high levels of NOin 3 some streams of the San Bernardino Mountains. However, the streams of the Devil Canyon catchment have widely varying dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) concentrations and export. These differences are also, to a more limited extent, present for dissolved organic carbon (DOC) but not in other dissolved species (Cl, SO24,Ca2+ and other weathering products). As catchment size increases DIN and DOC concentrations first increase until catchment area is ∼150 ha but then decrease as catchment scale increases beyond that size. The scale dependence of DIN export implies that catchments at different spatial scales are at different degrees of N saturation. The reason for this scale effect appears to be the dominance of flushing of DIN out of soil at small scales due to the temporal asynchrony between nutrient availability and biological N demand, the groundwater exfiltration of this flushed DIN at intermediate scales and the removal of this DIN from streamflow through in-stream processes and groundwater–surface water interaction at larger scales. While the particular scale effect observed here may not occur over the same range in catchment area in other ecosystems, it is likely that other ecosystems have similar scale dependant export for DIN and DOC.  相似文献

Papyrus wetlands around Lake Victoria, East Africa play an important role in the nutrient flows from the catchment to the lake. A dynamic model for nitrogen cycling was constructed to understand the processes contributing to nitrogen retention in the wetland and to evaluate the effects of papyrus harvesting on the nitrogen absorption capacity of the wetlands. The model had four layers: papyrus mat, water, sludge and sediment. Papyrus growth was modelled as the difference between nitrogen uptake and loss. Nitrogen uptake was modelled with a logistic equation combined with a Monod-type nitrogen limitation. Nitrogen compartments were papyrus plants, organic material in the floating mat; and total ammonia, nitrate and organic nitrogen in the water, sludge and sediment. Apart from the uptake and decay rates of the papyrus, the model included sloughing and settling of mat material into the water, mineralization of organic matter, and nitrification and diffusion of dissolved inorganic nitrogen. Literature data and field measurements were used for parameterization. The model was calibrated with data from Kirinya wetland in Jinja, Uganda which receives effluent from a municipal wastewater treatment plant. The model simulated realistic concentrations of dissolved nitrogen with a stable biomass density of papyrus and predicted accumulation of organic sludge in the wetland. Assuming that this sludge is not washed out of the wetland, the overall nitrogen retention of the wetland over a three-year period was 21.5 g N m−2 year−1 or about 25% of input. Harvesting 10, 20 and 30% of the papyrus biomass per year increased nitrogen retention capacity of the wetland to 32.3, 36.8 and 38.1 g m−2 year−1, respectively. Although the nutrient flows estimated by the model are within the ranges found in other papyrus wetlands, the model could be improved with regard to the dynamics of detrital nitrogen. Actual net retention of nitrogen in the sludge is likely to be lower than 21.5 g N m−2 year−1 because of flushing out of the sludge to the lake during the rainy season.  相似文献

Organic and inorganic carbon (C) fluxes transported by water were evaluated for dominant hydrologic flowpaths on two adjacent headwater catchments in the Brazilian Amazon with distinct soils and hydrologic responses from September 2003 through April 2005. The Ultisol-dominated catchment produced 30% greater volume of storm-related quickflow (overland flow and shallow subsurface flow) compared to the Oxisol-dominated catchment. Quickflow fluxes were equivalent to 3.2 ± 0.2% of event precipitation for the Ultisol catchment, compared to 2.5 ± 0.3% for the Oxisol-dominated watershed (mean response ±1 SE, n = 27 storms for each watershed). Hydrologic responses were also faster on the Ultisol watershed, with time to peak flow occurring 10 min earlier on average as compared to the runoff response on the Oxisol watershed. These different hydrologic responses are attributed primarily to large differences in saturated hydraulic conductivity (K s). Overland flow was found to be an important feature on both watersheds. This was evidenced by the response rates of overland flow detectors (OFDs) during the rainy season, with overland flow intercepted by 54 ± 0.5% and 65 ± 0.5% of OFDs for the Oxisol and Ultisol watersheds respectively during biweekly periods. Small volumes of quickflow correspond to large fluxes of dissolved organic C (DOC); DOC concentrations of the hydrologic flowpaths that comprise quickflow are an order of magnitude higher than groundwater flowpaths fueling base flow (19.6 ± 1.7 mg l−1 DOC for overland flow and 8.8 ± 0.7 mg l−1 DOC for shallow subsurface flow versus 0.50 ± 0.04,mg l−1 DOC in emergent groundwater). Concentrations of dissolved inorganic C (DIC, as dissolved CO2–C plus HCO3–C) in groundwater were found to be an order of magnitude greater than quickflow DIC concentrations (21.5 mg l−1 DIC in emergent groundwater versus 1.1 mg l−1 DIC in overland flow). The importance of deeper flowpaths in the transport of inorganic C to streams is indicated by the 40:1 ratio of DIC:DOC for emergent groundwater. Dissolved CO2–C represented 92% of DIC in emergent groundwater. Results from this study illustrate a highly dynamic and tightly coupled linkage between the C cycle and the hydrologic cycle for both Ultisol and Oxisol landscapes: organic C fluxes strongly tied to flowpaths associated with quickflow, and inorganic C (particularly dissolved CO2) transported via deeper flowpaths.  相似文献

1. Excretion of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) is a direct and potentially important role for aquatic consumers in nutrient cycling that has recently garnered increased attention. The ecosystem‐level significance of excreted nutrients depends on a suite of abiotic and biotic factors, however, and few studies have coupled measurements of excretion with consideration of its likely importance for whole‐system nutrient fluxes. 2. We measured rates and ratios of N and P excretion by shrimps (Xiphocaris elongata and Atya spp.) in two tropical streams that differed strongly in shrimp biomass because a waterfall excluded predatory fish from one site. We also made measurements of shrimp and basal resource carbon (C), N and P content and estimated shrimp densities and ecosystem‐level N and P excretion and uptake. Finally, we used a 3‐year record of discharge and NH4‐N concentration in the high‐biomass stream to estimate temporal variation in the distance required for excretion to turn over the ambient NH4‐N pool. 3. Per cent C, N, and P body content of Xiphocaris was significantly higher than that of Atya. Only per cent P body content showed significant negative relationships with body mass. C:N of Atya increased significantly with body mass and was higher than that of Xiphocaris. N : P of Xiphocaris was significantly higher than that of Atya. 4. Excretion rates ranged from 0.16–3.80 μmol NH4‐N shrimp?1 h?1, 0.23–5.76 μmol total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) shrimp?1 h?1 and 0.002–0.186 μmol total dissolved phosphorus (TDP) shrimp?1 h?1. Body size was generally a strong predictor of excretion rates in both taxa, differing between Xiphocaris and Atya for TDP but not NH4‐N and TDN. Excretion rates showed statistically significant but weak relationships with body content stoichiometry. 5. Large between‐stream differences in shrimp biomass drove differences in total excretion by the two shrimp communities (22.3 versus 0.20 μmol NH4‐N m?2 h?1, 37.5 versus 0.26 μmol TDN m?2 h?1 and 1.1 versus 0.015 μmol TDP m?2 h?1), equivalent to 21% and 0.5% of NH4‐N uptake and 5% and <0.1% of P uptake measured in the high‐ and low‐biomass stream, respectively. Distances required for excretion to turn over the ambient NH4‐N pool varied more than a hundredfold over the 3‐year record in the high‐shrimp stream, driven by variability in discharge and NH4‐N concentration. 6. Our results underscore the importance of both biotic and abiotic factors in controlling consumer excretion and its significance for nutrient cycling in aquatic ecosystems. Differences in community‐level excretion rates were related to spatial patterns in shrimp biomass dictated by geomorphology and the presence of predators. Abiotic factors also had important effects through temporal patterns in discharge and nutrient concentrations. Future excretion studies that focus on nutrient cycling should consider both biotic and abiotic factors in assessing the significance of consumer excretion in aquatic ecosystems.  相似文献

In this study, we conducted rainfall simulation experiments in a cool desert ecosystem to examine the role of biological soil crust disturbance and composition on dissolved and sediment C and N losses. We compared runoff and sediment C and N losses from intact late-successional dark cyanolichen crusts (intact) to both trampled dark crusts (trampled) and dark crusts where the top 1 cm of the soil surface was removed (scraped). In a second experiment, we compared C and N losses in runoff and sediments in early-successional light cyanobacterial crusts (light) to that of intact late-successional dark cyanolichen crusts (dark). A relatively high rainfall intensity of approximately 38 mm per 10-min period was used to ensure that at least some runoff was generated from all plots. Losses of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), dissolved organic nitrogen (DON), and ammonium (NH4+ ) were significantly higher from trampled plots as compared to scraped and intact plots. Sediment C and N losses, which made up more than 98% of total nutrient losses in all treatments, were more than 4-fold higher from trampled plots relative to intact plots (sediment C g/m2, intact = 0.74, trampled = 3.47; sediment N g/m2, intact = 0.06, trampled = 0.28). In light crusts, DOC loss was higher relative to dark crusts, but no differences were observed in dissolved N. Higher sediment loss in light crusts relative to dark crusts resulted in 5-fold higher loss of sediment-bound C and N. Total C flux (sediment + dissolved) was on the order of 0.9 and 7.9 g/m2 for dark and light crusts, respectively. Sediment N concentration in the first minutes after runoff from light crusts was 3-fold higher than the percent N of the top 1 cm of soil, suggesting that even short-term runoff events may have a high potential for N loss due to the movement of sediments highly enriched in N. Total N loss from dark crusts was an order of magnitude lower than light crusts (dark = 0.06 g N/m2, light = 0.63 g/m2). Overall, our results from the small plot scale (0.5 m2) suggest that C and N losses are much lower from intact late-successional cyanolichen crusts as compared to recently disturbed or early-successional light cyanobacterial crusts.  相似文献

Nutrient biogeochemistry associated with the early stages of soil development in deltaic floodplains has not been well defined. Such a model should follow classic patterns of soil nutrient pools described for alluvial ecosystems that are dominated by mineral matter high in phosphorus and low in carbon and nitrogen. A contrast with classic models of soil development is the anthropogenically enriched high nitrate conditions due to agricultural fertilization in upstream watersheds. Here we determine if short-term patterns of soil chemistry and dissolved inorganic nutrient fluxes along the emerging Wax Lake delta (WLD) chronosequence are consistent with conceptual models of long-term nutrient availability described for other ecosystems. We add a low nitrate treatment more typical of historic delta development to evaluate the role of nitrate enrichment in determining the net dinitrogen (N2) flux. Throughout the 35-year chronosequence, soil nitrogen and organic matter content significantly increased by an order of magnitude, whereas phosphorus exhibited a less pronounced increase. Under ambient nitrate concentrations (>60 μM), mean net N2 fluxes (157.5 μmol N m?2 h?1) indicated greater rates of gross denitrification than gross nitrogen fixation; however, under low nitrate concentrations (<2 μM), soils switched from net denitrification to net nitrogen fixation (?74.5 μmol N m?2 h?1). As soils in the WLD aged, the subsequent increase in organic matter stimulated net N2, oxygen, nitrate, and nitrite fluxes producing greater fluxes in more mature soils. In conclusion, soil nitrogen and carbon accumulation along an emerging delta chronosequence largely coincide with classic patterns of soil development described for alluvial floodplains, and substrate age together with ambient nitrogen availability can be used to predict net N2 fluxes during early delta evolution.  相似文献

We examined the effect of sustained stream bank seepage during base flow conditions on the pore water nitrogen biogeochemistry of two riparian zones in lowland agricultural areas in southern Ontario, Canada. Nitrate, ammonium and dissolved oxygen concentrations in riparian subsurface water over a two-year period showed well-organized spatial patterns along stream bank seepage flow paths that extended seasonally up to 25 m inland. High levels of dissolved oxygen and NO3 in stream inflow were depleted rapidly at the stream bank interface suggesting the occurrence of aerobic microbial respiration followed by denitrification. A zone of NH4+ accumulation persisted in more anaerobic sediments inland from the bank margin, although the magnitude and intensity of the pattern varied seasonally. A bromide tracer and NO3 co-injection at the stream bank interface indicated that bank seepage occurred along preferential flow paths in a poorly sorted gravel layer in the two riparian zones. Depletion of NO3 in relation to co-injected bromide confirmed that the bank margin was a hot spot of biogeochemical activity within the riparian zone. Conceptual models of humid temperate riparian zones have focused on nitrogen biogeochemistry in relation to hillslope to stream hydrologic flow paths. However, our results suggest that sustained stream bank inflow during low flow conditions can exert a dominant control on riparian nitrogen cycling in lowland landscapes where level riparian zones bounded by perennial streams receive limited subsurface inflows from adjacent slopes.  相似文献

This study documents regional patterns in stream nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in the Brazilian state of Rondônia in the southwestern Amazon basin, and interprets the patterns as functions of watershed soil properties, deforestation extent, and urban population density. The survey includes 77 different locations sampled in the dry and wet seasons, with a watershed size range from 1.8 to 33,000km2 over a total area of approximately 140,000km2. A sequential regression technique is used to separate the effects of natural watersheds properties and anthropogenic disturbance on nutrients and chloride. Natural variation in soil texture explains most of the variance in stream nitrate concentrations, while deforestation extent and urban population density explain most of the variance in stream chloride (Cl) and total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) concentrations. Stream TDN, total dissolved phosphorus (TDP), particulate phosphorus (PP) and Cl concentrations all increase non-linearly with deforestation extent in the dry season after controlling for natural variability due to soil type. Stream nutrient and Cl disturbances are observed only in watersheds more than 66–75% deforested (watershed area range 2–300km2), suggesting stream nutrient concentrations are resistant to perturbation from vegetation conversion below a 66–75% threshold. In heavily deforested watersheds, stream Cl shows the largest changes in concentration (12±6 times forested background), followed by TDP (2.3±1.5), PP (1.9±0.8) and TDN (1.7±0.5). Wet season signals in Cl and TDP are diluted relative to the dry season, and no land use signal is observed in wet season TDN, PN, or PP. Stream TDN and TDP concentrations in non-urban watersheds both correlate with stream Cl, suggesting that sources other than vegetation and soil organic matter contribute to enhanced nutrient concentrations. Small, urbanized watersheds (5–20km2) have up to 40 times the chloride and 10 times the TDN concentrations of forested catchments in the dry season. Several large watersheds (1000–3000km2) with urban populations show higher Cl, TDN and TDP levels than any small pasture watershed, suggesting that human impacts on nutrient concentrations in large river systems may be dominated by urban areas. Anthropogenic disturbance of dry-season stream Cl and TDN is detectable in large streams draining deforested and urbanized watersheds up to 33,000km2. We conclude that regional deforestation and urbanization result in changes in stream Cl, N and P concentrations at wide range of scales, from small pasture streams to large river systems.  相似文献

Benthic nutrient fluxes in a eutrophic, polymictic lake   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Sediment release rates of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and ammonium (NH4) were determined seasonally at three sites (water depth 7, 14 and 20 m) in Lake Rotorua using in situ benthic chamber incubations. Rates of release of SRP ranged from 2.2 to 85.6 mg P m−2 d−1 and were largely independent of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration. Two phases of NH4 release were observed in the chamber incubations; high initial rates of up to 2,200 mg N m−2 d−1 in the first 12 h of deployment followed by lower rates of up to 270 mg N m−2 d−1 in the remaining 36 h of deployment. Releases of SRP and NH4 were highest in summer and at the deepest of the three sites. High organic matter supply rates to the sediments may be important for sustaining high rates of sediment nutrient release. A nutrient budget of Lake Rotorua indicates that internal nutrient sources derived from benthic fluxes are more important than external nutrient sources to the lake.  相似文献

Ecologists have long used stream water chemistry records to infer hillslope processes, although a great deal of biogeochemical processing of soil water is known to occur both downslope and in-stream. We report the effects of forest succession on C and N export in the west central Cascades of Oregon, a region of low anthropogenic N input. In a previous study, watersheds with forests of differing ages showed a number of significant differences in stream nutrient export. This study was intended to establish whether differences in stream chemistry were due to variation in N retention by forests of different ages, and thus we measured C and N in lysimeter water draining 12 forest plots, which were categorized into four different stages of successional development. Mean total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) concentrations in deep soil solutions were 2.5 times higher than stream water TDN observed in the previous study, suggesting that denitrification and/or N uptake occurred in the streams or the riparian zone. Although there was a trend for highest soil solution N concentrations in the second youngest (stem exclusion) stage, this trend was significant only for NH4-N. We previously found that streamwater NO3-N concentrations averaged 46% of TDN export and was significantly higher in the young than in the older watersheds, however, soil solution NO3-N concentration averaged 2% of TDN concentration and did not vary with succession. Although NH4-N concentrations were very low (~5 μg L?1) in stream water, NH4-N in lysimeter samples averaged 35% of TDN. While stream water dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) concentrations averaged 30% of TDN concentrations, soil solution DON concentrations averaged 64% of TDN concentration; neither varied with succession. Even with sharp differences in both forest floor and mineral soil C:N ratios and C contents among plots, no measure of N export from the forest stands was significantly related to forest floor or mineral soil characteristics. This is most likely because forest floor C:N ratios all greatly exceeded the reported low C:N ratios required to allow significant N leakage. Taken together, these results suggest that riparian dynamics, in-stream processing, or perhaps even the presence of near-stream alders significantly alter concentrations of all N species between the soil solution and stream water.  相似文献

Summary Ammonia volatilization losses measured from soils at seven sites in the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania during the 1986 growing season ranged from 2.78±0.49% to 25.03±1.34% of nitrogen applied. Although peak ammonia losses ranged from 0.071±0.018 to 0.404±0.040 g N m-2 h-1, rates dropped to zero within four days, and calculations reveal that volatilization losses represent minor fluxes in the context of the system's nitrogen cycling. Volatilization losses were inversely correlated with grazing intensity experienced by a site, and it appears that large ungulates themselves contribute to nutrient conservation throught indirect interactive effects on system processes.  相似文献

Summary A parasitoid assemblage consisting of four hymenopteran species caused larval and pupal mortality of the host Gnorimoschema gallaeosolidaginis. In the absence of discrete host patches, the relationship between densities of hosts and parasitized hosts was examined on scales of 0.25, 1, 4, 16 and 25 m2 within a 400 m2 plot and between ten 16 m2 plots within a 1·3 km2 area. Within the 400 m2 plot, positive density dependence was observed on scales of 1, 4 and 16 m2. Rates of parasitism were found to be density independent across the ten 16 m2 plots. The nature of parasitoid and host spatial patterns were examined at the 400 m2 plot by using Goodall's (1974) paired-quadrat variance function, and by fitting the observed distribution of galls and parasitized galls to the Poisson and negative binomial on three scales. Postive density dependence at the 400 m2 plot occurred in the context of a host density gradient and may indicate aggregation of search time by parasitoids. However, significant responses on scales of 4 and 16 m2 may only reflect the sum of parasitoid responses on lower scales because of this gradient. Predominance of significant responses on a 1 m2 scale may be related to the high degree of variation in host density, and limits to active searching range of parasitoids.  相似文献

This study describes the effects of the American red swamp crayfish, Procambarus clarkii Girard, on water quality and sediment characteristics in the Spanish floodplain wetland, Las Tablas de Daimiel National Park. Our short term enclosure study during a summer drawdown revealed that crayfish acted as a nutrient pump that transformed and translocated sediment bound nutrients to the water column. Water quality impoverishment was mainly due to the increase of dissolved inorganic nutrients (soluble reactive phosphorus and ammonia), and a significant increase of total suspended solids occurred likely as a result of crayfish associated bioturbation. At the same time, crayfish reduced the content of organic matter in the sediment and we observed a slight increase of total sediment phosphorus and nitrogen content as a result of crayfish benthic activity. P. clarkii effects, in terms of internal nutrient loading (229.91 mg TP m–2 d–1), were shown to be important on a local scale, indicating the significance of internal nutrient supply to water column primary producers particularly under low external supply (summer). Extrapolations to the whole ecosystem, however, revealed a negligible crayfish contribution (0.06%) to total internal nutrient loading (0.035 mg TP m–2 d–1). Hence, crayfish spatial heterogeneity patterns are important in global and local matter fluxes and nutrient cycles in wetlands.  相似文献

This study aimed at tracing and quantifying organic carbon and total nitrogen fluxes related to suspended material in irrigation water in the uplands of northwest Vietnam. In the study area, a reservoir acts as a sink for sediments from the surrounding mountains, feeding irrigation channels to irrigate lowland paddy systems. A flow separation identified the flow components of overland flow, water release from the reservoir to the irrigation channel, direct precipitation into the channel, irrigation discharge to paddy fields and discharge leaving the sub-watershed. A mixed effects model was used to assess the C and N loads of each flow component. Irrigation water had an average baseline concentration of 29?±?4.4?mg?l?1 inorganic C, 4.7?±?1.2?mg?l?1 organic C and 3.9?±?1.6?mg?l?1 total N. Once soils were rewetted and overland flow was induced, organic C and total N concentrations changed rapidly due to increasing sediment loads in the irrigation water. Summarizing all monitored events, overland flow was estimated to convey about 63?kg organic C ha?1 and 8.5?kg?N?ha?1 from surrounding upland fields to the irrigation channel. The drainage of various non-point sources towards the irrigation channel was supported by the variation of the estimated organic C/total N ratios of the overland flow which fluctuated between 2 and 7. Nevertheless, the majority of the nutrient loads (up to 93–99%) were derived from the reservoir, which served as a sediment-buffer trap. Due to the overall high nutrient and sediment content of the reservoir water used for irrigation, a significant proportion of nutrients was continuously reallocated to the paddy fields in the lowland throughout the rice cropping season. The cumulative amount of organic C and total N load entering paddies with the irrigation water between May and September was estimated at 0.8 and 0.7?Mg?ha?1, respectively. Therefore deposition of C and N through irrigation is an important contributor in maintaining soil fertility, and a process to be taken into account in the soil fertility management in these paddy rice systems.  相似文献

Sanitary sewage can create serious environmental problems if discharged directly into natural waters without appropriate treatment. This study showed that red light is the optimum light wavelength for growing microalgae Chlorella vulgaris in microalgae biological wastewater treatment systems, given a harvest time of 144 h. Only moderate light intensities (1,000, 1,500, 2,000, and 2,500 μmol m?2 s?1) were able to remove nutrients from synthetic sanitary sewage, but higher light intensity led to better nutrient removal effects. Because of economic considerations, the optimum light intensity range for efficient nutrient removal was determined to be between 1,500 and 2,000 μmol m?2 s?1. Furthermore, nutrient removal efficiency was significantly affected by light wavelength, light intensity, the interaction of these two factors, and the interaction among light wavelength, light intensity, and influent carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratios. Total nitrogen and total phosphorus removal efficiency was also significantly affected by influent C/N ratios. Appropriate control of carbon and nitrogen source concentrations enabled optimal nutrient removal. The optimal influent C/N ratio was determined to be 6:1.  相似文献
