The need for supplemental heat in brooding chicks in a hot humid tropical area where prevalent mean environmental temperature and relative humidity are 33°C and 60%, respectively, was tested in an experiment using 320 broiler chickens. The chicks were divided into four quadruplicate lots of 20 birds each and were brooded with or without supplemental heat and light for periods varying between zero and 28 days. Each treatment group of 80 birds was subjected to one of four heat and light treatments, namely: supplementation with heat and light for the 28-day brooding period (control), supplementation with heat and light for the first 14-days only, supplementation for the last 14-days only and non-supplementation with heat and light for the entire 28-day period. Final body weight, body weight gain, feed consumption, feed conversion efficiency and mortality were not significantly (P>0.05) affected by the treatments. However, chicks brooded with supplemental heat and light for 28 days consumed significantly more water than all others. Chicks brooded without supplemental heat and light for 28 days had significantly (P<0.05) higher haemoglobin and hematocrit values than all others.  相似文献

4 diets formulated to contain 8.5, 10.0, 11.5 and 12.5 MJ/kg metabolizable energy and 85, 133, 192 and 250 g/kg of protein respectively were prepared in 3 physical forms: meal, reground pellets or reground expanded and fed to growing rats from 28 to 56 days of age. Food intake was increased by pelleting and expanding in lower energy diets, whereas these differences tended to disappear in the higher energy diets. Growth and food conversion efficiencies showed a similar pattern, with the greatest differences evident in the low energy diets. Male rats showed greater differences than females in all parameters measured. Expanding the diet improved the microbiological status over pelleting both being superior to unprocessed meal. Measurements of digestible and metabolizable energy values of the 8.5 and 12.5 MJ/kg diets revealed consistent decreases in energy availability following processing. This suggested that the observed growth responses were due mainly to increased food intake coupled with increased nitrogen retention.  相似文献

Effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and salt stress on nutrient acquisition and growth of two tomato cultivars exhibiting differences in salt tolerance were investigated. Plants were grown in a sterilized, low-P (silty clay) soil-sand mix. Salt was applied at saturation extract (ECe) values of 1.4 (control), 4.9 (medium) and 7.1 dS m–1 (high salt stress). Mycorrhizal colonization occurred irrespective of salt stress in both cultivars, but AMF colonization was higher under control than under saline soil conditions. The salt-tolerant cultivar Pello showed higher mycorrhizal colonization than the salt-sensitive cultivar Marriha. Shoot dry matter (DM) yield and leaf area were higher in mycorrhizal than nonmycorrhizal plants of both cultivars. Shoot DM and leaf area but not root DM were higher in Pello than Marriha. The enhancement in shoot DM due to AMF inoculation was 22% and 21% under control, 31% and 58% under medium, and 18% and 59% under high salinity for Pello and Marriha, respectively. For both cultivars, the contents of P, K, Zn, Cu, and Fe were higher in mycorrhizal than nonmycorrhizal plants under control and medium saline soil conditions. The enhancement in P, K, Zn, Cu, and Fe acquisition due to AMF inoculation was more pronounced in Marriha than in the Pello cultivar under saline conditions. The results suggest that Marriha benefited more from AMF colonization than Pello under saline soil conditions, despite the fact that Pello roots were highly infected with the AMF. Thus, it appears that Marriha is more dependent on AMF symbiosis than Pello. Accepted: 22 January 2001  相似文献

A study on turkeys was conducted to evaluate the administration of different levels of mannan-oligosaccharide (MOS) (0.1, 0.25 and 0.5%) to a diet without or with an antibiotic (Flavomycin, 8?mg/kg feed). The growth performance as well as caecal development and metabolism indicators of turkeys after 8 weeks of experimental feeding were estimated. No interactions were noted between the contents of antibiotic and MOS in the diet in any of the parameters examined. During 8 weeks of experimental feeding, the feed intake as well as feed conversion ratio were similar in all experimental groups. The turkeys fed a control diet (without MOS) supplemented with antibiotic were the heaviest, but there were no statistical differences between groups. Depending on dietary dose, MOS had a different influence on caecal digesta parameters. The medium level of dietary MOS (0.25%) resulted in the highest caecal pH, dry matter and protein concentrations as well as the bacterial glycolytic activity (including β-glucuronidase). Compared to other dietary treatments, the highest amount of MOS (0.5%) reduced ammonia concentration and enhanced volatile fatty acids concentration, especially of acetate and butyrate, in the caecal digesta. The medium level of dietary MOS caused a significant enhancement of propionate, iso-butyrate and iso-valerate concentrations in the digesta. The antibiotic addition to a diet resulted in a lack of birds' response.  相似文献

In rice plants grown under red light supplemented with blue light (red/blue-light PPFD ratio was 4/1), photosynthetic rates per unit leaf area measured under white light at 1,600 and 250 micromol m-2) s-1 were higher than those in the plants grown under red light alone. The higher photosynthetic rates were associated with higher total N content of leaves, which was accompanied by larger amounts of key components of photosynthesis-limiting processes, including Rubisco, Cyt f, Chl and LHCII. These results suggested that the increase in total N content of leaves induced by supplemental blue light enhanced both light-saturated and light-limited photosynthesis.  相似文献

Plasmodium falciparum gametocyte levels are influenced by level of regional endemicity, the antimalarial treatment, and the therapeutic response of patients. Few previous studies have related these factors in Colombia. Here, gametocytaemia was evaluated with respect to two treatment schemes (sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine and sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine plus chloroquine), the patient response (adequate or failure), and the locality (two areas of varying case frequency). One hundred forty-eight residents of Turbo and Zaragoza (Antioquia), all with uncomplicated malaria, were evaluated. The gametocytaemia and the rates of clinical malaria at the beginning of treatment were greater in Turbo than in Zaragoza. No statistically significant differences in the gametocytaemia by treatment schemes or therapeutic responses were noted, although the patients who received SP had more gametocytes than those treated with SP+CQ. Gametocytaemia was not correlated with asexual parasitemia or sex and age of patient. The difference in the level of gametocytaemia between Turbo and Zaragoza appears to be influenced by the time elapsed between the appearance of symptoms and the beginning of treatment.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to measure the effect of feeding two total mixed rations (TMRs), differing in their roughage content and in vitro dry matter (DM) digestibility, on the physiological response and energy balance of lactating cows. The partitioning of metabolizable energy intake (MEI) between heat production (HP) and retained energy (RE) of cows held under hot weather conditions and external evaporative cooling was measured. In all, 42 lactating cows were divided into two similar sub-groups, each of 21 animals, and were fed either a control (CON) ration containing 18% roughage neutral detergent fiber (NDF) or an experimental (EXP) TMR containing 12% roughage NDF and used soy hulls as partial wheat silage replacer. The in vitro DM digestibility of the CON and EXP TMR was 75.3% and 78.6%, respectively (P < 0.05). All cows were cooled by evaporative cooling for 2 adaptation weeks plus 6 experimental weeks under hot weather conditions. The EXP diet reduced rectal temperature and respiratory rate of the cows while increasing their DM intake (DMI) from 23.1 to 24.7 kg/cow per day, milk yield from 41.9 to 44.2 kg and yield of energy-corrected milk from 38.7 to 39.7 kg, as compared with the CON group. Cows fed the EXP TMR had increased RE in milk and body tissue, as compared with the CON group, but the diets had no effect on the measured HP that was maintained constant (130.4 v. 130.8 MJ/cow per day) in the two groups. The measured MEI (MEI = RE + HP) and the efficiency of MEI utilization for RE production were also similar in the two dietary groups.  相似文献

The relationships between various leaf functional traits that are important in plant growth (e.g., specific leaf area) have been investigated in recent studies; however, research in this context on plants that are highly protected by chemical defences, particularly resource-demanding nitrogen-based defence, is lacking. We collected leaves from cyanogenic (N-defended) Beilschmiedia collina B. Hyland and acyanogenic (C-defended) Beilschmiedia tooram (F. M. Bailey) B. Hyland at high- and low-soil nutrient sites in two consecutive years that varied significantly in rainfall. We then measured the relationships between chemical defence and morphological and functional leaf traits under the different environmental conditions. We found that the two species differed significantly in their resource allocation to defence as well as leaf morphology and function. The N defended species had a higher leaf nitrogen concentration, whereas the C-defended species had higher amounts of C-based chemical defences (i.e., total phenolics and condensed tannins). The C-defended species also tended to have higher force to fracture and increased leaf toughness. In B. collina, cyanogenic glycoside concentration was higher with higher rainfall, but not with higher soil nutrients. Total phenolic concentration was higher at the high soil nutrient site in B. tooram, but lower in B. collina; however, with higher rainfall an increase was found in B. tooram, while phenolics decreased in B. collina. Condensed tannin concentration decreased in both species with rainfall and nutrient availability. We conclude that chemical defence is correlated with leaf functional traits and that variation in environmental resources affects this correlation.  相似文献

BackgroundThe Coq protein complex assembled from several Coq proteins is critical for coenzyme Q6 (CoQ6) biosynthesis in yeast. Secondary CoQ10 deficiency is associated with mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations in patients. We previously demonstrated that carbonyl cyanide-p-trifluoromethoxyphenylhydrazone (FCCP) suppressed CoQ10 levels and COQ5 protein maturation in human 143B cells.MethodsThis study explored the putative COQ protein complex in human cells through two-dimensional blue native-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and Western blotting to investigate its status in 143B cells after FCCP treatment and in cybrids harboring the mtDNA mutation that caused myoclonic epilepsy with ragged-red fibers (MERRF) syndrome. Ubiquinol-10 and ubiquinone-10 levels were detected by high-performance liquid chromatography. Mitochondrial energy status, mRNA levels of various PDSS and COQ genes, and protein levels of COQ5 and COQ9 in cybrids were examined.ResultsA high-molecular-weight protein complex containing COQ5, but not COQ9, in the mitochondria was identified and its level was suppressed by FCCP and in cybrids with MERRF mutation. That was associated with decreased mitochondrial membrane potential and mitochondrial ATP production. Total CoQ10 levels were decreased under both conditions, but the ubiquinol-10:ubiquinone-10 ratio was increased in mutant cybrids. The expression of COQ5 was increased but COQ5 protein maturation was suppressed in the mutant cybrids.ConclusionsA novel COQ5-containing protein complex was discovered in human cells. Its destabilization was associated with reduced CoQ10 levels and mitochondrial energy deficiency in human cells treated with FCCP or exhibiting MERRF mutation.General significanceThe findings elucidate a possible mechanism for mitochondrial dysfunction-induced CoQ10 deficiency in human cells.  相似文献

The influence of inefeased atmospheric CO2 on the interaction between plant growth and water use is proving to be one of the most profound impacts of the anthropogenic Greenhouse Effect. This paper illustrates the interaction between CO2 and water in plant growth at a range of scales. Most published work has concentrated on water use efficiency, especially at shorter time scales, and has shown large increases of leaf water use efficiency with increased CO2. However, the magnitude of the effect is variable, and does not consistently agree with predictions from simple leaf gas exchange considerations. The longer the time scales considered, the less the information and the more the uncertainty in the response to CO2, because of the additional factors that have to be considered, such as changes in leaf area, respiration of non-photosynthetic tissues and soil evaporation. The need for more detailed studies of the interactions between plant evaporation, water supply, water status and growth is stressed, as increased CO2 can affect all of these either directly, or indirectly through feedbacks with leaf gas exchange, carbon partitioning, leaf growth, canopy development and root growth.  相似文献

Responses of Mediterranean fruit fly Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae) adults to chemicals from citrus fruits were quantified in choice tests conducted in large field cages housing naturally planted orange trees, on the Greek island of Chios. Both sexes responded strongly to chemicals released from artificial cuts made in the pulp of peeled oranges and also to natural or commercial orange juice applied to the surface of yellow 7.0 cm diameter spheres. Males also responded strongly to chemicals released from cuts made in the oily region of the orange peel, or flavedo and less to sour orange and lemon. In contrast, females did not respond to flavedo chemicals. Male response to peel chemicals occurred throughout the day and increased as the number of cuts per fruit increased from 2 to 8. Contact of male mouthparts with sap from cuts, and mating attempts between males on or near the cuts were frequently observed. The males also responded to commercial essential orange oils applied to yellow spheres, but less to essential mandarin oils. The role of citrus chemicals in host finding behaviour of C. capitata and their potential use for the development of effective traps for monitoring and controlling the fly are discussed. The experimental method followed in this study can be used as a standard technique for evaluation of the quality of flies to be used in sterile insect technique programmes.  相似文献

Whole (WSB) or ground (GSB) full-fat soybeans were extruded at 80, 100, 120 or 140°C and incorporated into broiler diets at 30% inclusion level during a 3-week trial.Extrusion of soybeans at 140 °C improved feed intake compared to those extruded at lower temperatures (P < 0.05). However, there were no significant effects of the extrusion temperature on weight gain, feed:gain ratio or mortality rate (P > 0.05). Also, there were no significant effects of whether the extrusion was undertaken prior to or after grinding of the soybeans on feed intake, weight gain, feed:gain ratio, or mortality rate (P > 0.05). There was no significant interaction between the extrusion temperature and the form extruded on any of the performance parameters (P > 0.05).Although increase in extrusion temperature reduced the trypsin inhibitor activity (TIA) of the soybeans, there were no significant effects of the extrusion temperature or type of soybean extruded on nitrogen, fat, calcium or phosphorus retention or diet ME (P > 0.05).It is concluded that low temperature extrusion of full fat soybeans does not reduce TIA to a satisfactory level (< 10 mg g−1 sample) that will enable high dietary inclusion of such extruded soybeans for broilers.  相似文献

Dietary phosphorus concentration greatly affects pig’s growth performance, environmental impact and diet cost. A total of 1080 pigs (initially 5.9 ± 1.08 kg) from three commercial research rooms were used to determine the effects of increasing standardized total tract digestible (STTD) P concentrations in diets without and with phytase on growth performance and percentage bone ash. Pens (10 pigs/pen, 9 pens/treatment) were balanced for equal weights and randomly allotted to 12 treatments. Treatments were arranged in two dose titrations (without or with 2000 units of phytase) with six levels of STTD P each. The STTD P levels were expressed as a percentage of NRC (2012) requirement estimates (% of NRC; 0.45 and 0.40% for phases 1 and 2, respectively) and were: 80%, 90%, 100%, 110%, 125% and 140% of NRC in diets without phytase and 100%, 110%, 125%, 140%, 155% and 170% of NRC in diets with phytase. Diets were provided in three phases, with experimental diets fed during phases 1 (days 0 to 11) and 2 (days 11 to 25), followed by a common diet from days 25 to 46. On day 25, radius samples from one median-weight gilt per pen were collected for analysis of bone ash. During the treatment period, increasing STTD P from 80% to 140% of NRC in diets without phytase improved average daily gain (ADG; quadratic, P < 0.01), average daily feed intake (ADFI; quadratic, P < 0.05) and gain–feed ratio (G : F; linear, P < 0.01). Estimated STTD P requirement in diets without phytase was 117% and 91% of NRC for maximum ADG according to quadratic polynomial (QP) and broken-line linear (BLL) models, respectively, and was 102%, 119% and >140% of NRC for maximum G : F using BLL, broken-line quadratic and linear models, respectively. When diets contained phytase, increasing STTD P from 100% to 170% of NRC improved ADG (quadratic, P < 0.05) and G : F (linear, P < 0.01). Estimated STTD P requirement in diets containing phytase was 138% for maximum ADG (QP), and 147% (QP) and 116% (BLL) of NRC for maximum G : F. Increasing STTD P increased (linear, P < 0.01) the percentage bone ash regardless of phytase addition. When comparing diets containing the same STTD P levels, phytase increased (P < 0.01) ADG, ADFI and G : F. In summary, estimated STTD P requirements varied depending on the response criteria and statistical models and ranged from 91% to >140% of NRC (0.41% to >0.63% of phase 1 diet and 0.36% to >0.56% of phase 2 diet) in diets without phytase, and from 116% to >170% of NRC (0.52% to >0.77% of phase 1 diet and 0.46% to >0.68% of phase 2 diet) for diets containing phytase. Phytase exerted an extra-phosphoric effect on promoting pig’s growth and improved the P dose-responses for ADG and G : F.  相似文献

Determination of the energetic contribution of different chemical components of cattle diets based on the content of total digestible nutrients (TDN) has been suggested by several authors and was adopted by the NRC [National Research Council (NRC), 2001. Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle, seventh ed. Academic Press, Washington]. The main objective of that proposal is to overcome the high costs and the extended time of traditional in vivo digestion assays. Although theoretically based, the summative system adopted by the NRC [National Research Council (NRC), 2001. Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle, seventh ed. Academic Press, Washington] has been shown to be inaccurate in predicting the TDN content of individual feeds or diets under tropical conditions. Therefore, a new model, that also uses a summative approach, was developed but it was based on data obtained in the tropics. The new model consists of equations that predict the digestible fractions of ether extract (n = 108), crude protein (n = 93), non-fibrous carbohydrates (n = 84), and neutral detergent fibre (n = 164). Non-fibrous components were evaluated by the Lucas [Lucas, H.L., 1960. Relations Between Apparent Digestibility and the Composition of Feed and Feces. 1: A Quantitative Theory. North Caroline State College, Raleigh] test to obtain true digestibility coefficients, and by the factorial system to distinguish between truly digested and metabolic fractions. Fibre components were evaluated using an adaptation of the surface law to obtain the indigestible fraction and a meta-analysis approach to obtain digestibility coefficients of the potentially digestible fraction. The estimates obtained with the new model were validated and compared to those produced with the model adopted by the NRC [National Research Council (NRC), 2001. Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle, seventh ed. Academic Press, Washington] for cattle managed under tropical conditions. Data from four trials, two with lactating cows (n = 63) and two with growing and finishing cattle (n = 44) were used. The estimates produced with the two models were compared based on the decomposition of the mean square prediction error. It can be concluded that the new model was more accurate in predicting TDN values than the NRC [National Research Council (NRC), 2001. Nutrient Requirements of Dairy Cattle, seventh ed. Academic Press, Washington] model under tropical conditions.  相似文献

The present work is aimed at evaluating the behaviour of Italian Heavy Draught Horse (IHDH) foals reared in semi-covered stables and fed two isoenergetic total mixed rations with different dietary protein levels (13.2% and 10.6% of CP on dry matter). The study was prompted by the restrictions for nitrate emissions in farms of the European Nitrate Directive. One suggested solution is to reduce dietary protein while maintaining normal performance and welfare, but there is a lack of literature in studies of horses. The behaviours of 20 foals of 437±60 kg of BW, aged 379±37 days and stabled in four pens by sex (S) and diet (D) were video recorded and analysed to build a suitable ethogram including 18 behaviours in six categories: ingestion, resting, maintenance, movement, social activities, other. The percentage of the daily time spent in each behavioural category and single behaviours was analysed via a single traits GLM including S, D and their interaction. Daily activity was consistent with existing literature: foals spent about 33% of the day in ingestion activities and 41% in resting, whereas social interactions constituted 8% of the time and individual maintenance <2%. Concerning diet, foals fed high protein spent more time in movement (19.62±0.73% of day v. 10.45±0.73% in low-protein (LP) foals; P⩽0.001), whereas the LP group increased resting (43.42±1.12% v. 38.02±1.12%; P⩽0.001). No stereotypies were found, and daily activity followed the typical values for draught breeds for foals in both dietary groups, a result that suggests the maintenance of well-being after dietary protein reduction. This result, together with the findings of a companion study showing no changes in growth performances of foals, showed that a reduction of CP in foal diet is reconcilable with the maintenance of performance and welfare.  相似文献

To understand the mechanisms of heat stress responses in perennial grasses, differential proteins in leaves and roots of two genotypes of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis), including heat-tolerant ‘Midnight’ and heat-sensitive ‘Brilliant’, were analyzed with two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) and mass spectrometry (MS). Plants were exposed to heat stress for 28 days in growth chambers. Under 7–28 days of heat stress, leaf photochemical efficiency declined significantly while electrolyte leakage increased in leaves and roots, and to a lesser extent for heat-tolerant ‘Midnight’ than for heat-sensitive ‘Brilliant’. Compared with leaves, cell membrane damage due to heat stress was more severe in roots. The 2-DE and MS analysis identified 37 heat-responsive proteins in leaves, 28 heat-responsive proteins in roots; 14 proteins in leaves and 9 proteins in roots exhibited differential expression between the two genotypes. The results indicate that proteins involved in metabolism and energy in leaves and those in antioxidant defense in roots are associated with heat tolerance in Kentucky bluegrass. The differential accumulation of these proteins might be the reason for different heat tolerance in two Kentucky bluegrass genotypes in aerial and underground parts.  相似文献

Competition for available water resources in both arid and semi-arid locations has led to greater scrutiny of turfgrass irrigation. Irrigation management strategies, including deficit irrigation, need further investigation. The objective of this research was to determine the physiological response of bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.) to prolonged water deficits under saline conditions. Bermudagrass was grown in large columns packed with three different soil types (sandy loam, silt loam and clay). Synthesized saline irrigation water was applied at three different salinity levels (1.5, 3.0 and 6.0 dS/m). Two previous experiments that were conducted with these columns over a 3.5 year period led to differential profile salinization in all 27 columns. At the end of this 3.5 year period, all irrigations were terminated and plant growth and water status were monitored over a 95 day dry-down period. Midday stomatal conductance, leaf water potential, canopy temperature, soil water in storage and stolon elongation were measured over the experimental period. On day 95, above ground tissue was harvested for dry weight and elemental tissue analysis. Midday stomatal conductance decreased around day 30 in all columns regardless of soil salinity. This decrease was not associated with a threshold leaf water potential, as midday leaf water potentials remained constant over a 60 day period. Stolon elongation also ceased before any deviation in the midday leaf water potential occurred. A concomitant reduction in evapo ranspiration was not associated with the measured decrease in stomatal conductance. This would suggest that bermudagrass may have regulated stomatal activity to compensate for lower conductances during periods of greater stress and/or that measured midday stomatal conductances cannot always be directly coupled to extended time evapotranspiration measurements.  相似文献
