Sociolinguistic studies of language shift have in their majority framed their research object in a horizon of theoretically received variables such as class, ethnicity, locality, attitudes etc. In spite of a limited usefulness of such conceptual variables, and of a recently emerging focus on agency, negotiation, and praxis the best results we obtain have not questioned in a coherent and theoretically sound manner the continuing hegemony of mechanistic-metaphorical models (language death, language suicide). In this paper I propose to examine language shift as a multifaceted phenomenon, joining in this respect work by other linguistic anthropologists researching similar areas. I specifically argue that by replacing vertical concepts such as age and generation, and dichotomous logics such as center and periphery with phenomenologically inspired concepts such as typifications, consociateship, contemporariness, and stream of consciousness we are in a better position to generalize about language shift dynamics. Data for this work is derived primarily from the Albanian speech communities of modern Greece, but also from other communities for comparative purposes.  相似文献

A phenomenological theory of mass transport for antigen—antibody reactions predicts many of the characteristic features of rocket-immunoelectrophoretic patterns including the linear dependence of rocket height upon antigen concentration. Controlled oxygen-therapy was used in 30 out of 49 patients (61%) with the acute respiratory failure or exacerbations of the chronic respiratory failure treated at ICU (Group Y), while artificial ventilation in the remaining 19 patients (39%; Group B). An improvement was achieved in 70% of patients of Group A and 42% in Group B. Overall improvement was achieved in 59% of the treated patients. There were 69% of treated patients with infections. Totally 41% of the treated patients died (30% of Group A and 58% of Group B). An analysis of the results has been carried out in various subgroups of the treated patients, i.e. the acute and exacerbated respiratory failure as well as partial and complete respiratory insufficiency. The result of high risk patients have also been analysed. This subgroup included sudden cardiac arrest, shock and non-compensated acidosis. Favourable effects of the intensive care of patients with infections have been discussed with particular reference to the life hazard in case of septic complications. Emphasis is on the unfavorable effects of therapy in patients with respiratory failure complicated with pulmonary embolism. Indications to the use of respirator and complications of the artificial ventilation have been discussed.  相似文献

Adherent cells normally apply forces as a generic means of sensing and responding to the mechanical nature of their surrounding environment. How these forces vary as a function of the extracellular rigidity is critical to understanding the regulatory functions that drive important phenomena such as wound healing or muscle contraction. In recognition of this fact, experiments have been conducted to understand cell rigidity-sensing properties under known conditions of the extracellular environment, opening new possibilities for modeling this active behavior. In this work, we provide a physics-based constitutive model taking into account the main structural components of the cell to reproduce its most significant contractile properties such as the traction forces exerted as a function of time and the extracellular stiffness. This model shows how the interplay between the time-dependent response of the acto-myosin contractile system and the elastic response of the cell components determines the mechano-sensing behavior of single cells.  相似文献

A two-compartment model of a dopaminergic neuron based on modified FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillators for each compartment has been built. The compartments correspond to the soma and dendrites and differ in the values of small parameters. The influence of stimuli (imposed current for the soma compartment and synaptic activation for the dendrite compartment) on the model has been studied. Activation of AMPA and NMDA synaptic currents is shown to cause generation of high-frequency bursts by the neuron. The mechanisms underlying burst generation are considered.  相似文献

When the environment in which an organism lives deviates in some essential way from that to which it is adapted, this is described as “evolutionary mismatch,” or “evolutionary novelty.” The notion of mismatch plays an important role, explicitly or implicitly, in evolution-informed cognitive psychology, clinical psychology, and medicine. The evolutionary novelty of our contemporary environment is thought to have significant implications for our health and well-being. However, scientists have generally been working without a clear definition of mismatch. This paper defines mismatch as deviations in the environment that render biological traits unable, or impaired in their ability, to produce their selected effects (i.e., to perform their proper functions in Neander’s sense). The machinery developed by Millikan in connection with her account of proper function, and with her related teleosemantic account of representation, is used to identify four major types, and several subtypes, of evolutionary mismatch. While the taxonomy offered here does not in itself resolve any scientific debates, the hope is that it can be used to better formulate empirical hypotheses concerning the effects of mismatch. To illustrate, it is used to show that the controversial hypothesis that general intelligence evolved as an adaptation to handle evolutionary novelty can, contra some critics, be formulated in a conceptually coherent way.  相似文献

The current article suggests that deterministic chaos self-organized in cortical dynamics could be responsible for the generation of spontaneous action sequences. Recently, various psychological observations have suggested that humans and primates can learn to extract statistical structures hidden in perceptual sequences experienced during active environmental interactions. Although it has been suggested that such statistical structures involve chunking or compositional primitives, their neuronal implementations in brains have not yet been clarified. Therefore, to reconstruct the phenomena, synthetic neuro-robotics experiments were conducted by using a neural network model, which is characterized by a generative model with intentional states and its multiple timescales dynamics. The experimental results showed that the robot successfully learned to imitate tutored behavioral sequence patterns by extracting the underlying transition probability among primitive actions. An analysis revealed that a set of primitive action patterns was embedded in the fast dynamics part, and the chaotic dynamics of spontaneously sequencing these action primitive patterns was structured in the slow dynamics part, provided that the timescale was adequately set for each part. It was also shown that self-organization of this type of functional hierarchy ensured robust action generation by the robot in its interactions with a noisy environment. This article discusses the correspondence of the synthetic experiments with the known hierarchy of the prefrontal cortex, the supplementary motor area, and the primary motor cortex for action generation. We speculate that deterministic dynamical structures organized in the prefrontal cortex could be essential because they can account for the generation of both intentional behaviors of fixed action sequences and spontaneous behaviors of pseudo-stochastic action sequences by the same mechanism.  相似文献

The structure of local synaptic circuits is the key to understanding cortical function and how neuronal functional modules such as cortical columns are formed. The central problem in deciphering cortical microcircuits is the quantification of synaptic connectivity between neuron pairs. I present a theoretical model that accounts for the axon and dendrite morphologies of pre- and postsynaptic cells and provides the average number of synaptic contacts formed between them as a function of their relative locations in three-dimensional space. An important aspect of the current approach is the representation of a complex structure of an axonal/dendritic arbor as a superposition of basic structures—synaptic clouds. Each cloud has three structural parameters that can be directly estimated from two-dimensional drawings of the underlying arbor. Using empirical data available in literature, I applied this theory to three morphologically different types of cell pairs. I found that, within a wide range of cell separations, the theory is in very good agreement with empirical data on (i) axonal–dendritic contacts of pyramidal cells and (ii) somatic synapses formed by the axons of inhibitory interneurons. Since for many types of neurons plane arborization drawings are available from literature, this theory can provide a practical means for quantitatively deriving local synaptic circuits based on the actual observed densities of specific types of neurons and their morphologies. It can also have significant implications for computational models of cortical networks by making it possible to wire up simulated neural networks in a realistic fashion.  相似文献

The response of a model olfactory system to a single odorant is quantified by interconnecting three separate stimulus-response relationships. Together, these relationships encompass the deposition of odorant molecules onto an olfactory organ, their movement to the dendrite of the olfactory receptor neuron, their subsequent induction of action potentials, and the processing of induced and spontaneous action potentials by the central nervous system, resulting in perception and a behavioral response. Phenomena discussed within the context of the model include the behavioral threshold, central summation of responses from a number of olfactory neurons, and the effect of organ shape on olfactory detection.The intent of the model is to provide a quantitative conceptual framework for designing and interpreting experiments relating sensory input to perception and behavior. Its utility is particularly evident for insect olfaction since it enables insect sex pheromone behavioral thresholds to be estimated from the literature when bioassays or electrophysiological studies are not possible. It also derives a physiologically meaningful method for comparing behavioral thresholds among different animals, and permits comparisons of different kinds of behavioral responses in the same species. Vertebrate olfaction is treated briefly in a discussion of the effect of sniffing on the threshold of detection.  相似文献

Different physical features of an organism are often measured concurrently, because their correlations can be used as predictors of longevity, future health, or adaptability to an ecological niche. Since, in general, we do not know a priori if the temporal variations in the measured quantities are causally related, it may be useful to have a method that could help us to identify possible correlations and to obtain parameters that may vary from population to population. In this paper we develop a procedure that may detect underlying relationships. We do this by generalizing the recently introduced concept of phenomenological universalities to the complex field. In this generalization, allometric growth is described by a complex function, whose real and imaginary parts represent two phenotypic traits of the same organism. As particular solutions of the resulting problem, we obtain generalizations of the Gompertz and the von Bertalanffy-West growth equations. We then apply the procedure to two biological systems in order to show how to determine the existence of mutual interference between trait variations.  相似文献

It was shown that human contrast sensitivity function (CSF) had noticeable extremums (Evseev et al, 1987). This phenomenon has not been closely investigated yet. In present paper, we studied human CSFs that were obtained by using gratings with 0 degrees, 90 degrees and 135 degrees orientations. It has been shown that, firstly, periodic extremums are clearly visible in averaged CSF obtained by using 0 degrees orientation gratings but they are weakly evident when 90 degrees and 135 degrees gratings were used. Secondly, the extremum amplitudes dramatically decrease in repeated testing, and virtually disappear after the 5th one. The data obtained suggest that local extremums phenomenon is related to mirror visual system information processing rather than subject's casual mistakes.  相似文献
