A great horned owl (Bubo virginianus) was fed the carcass of an experimentally infected rabid skunk. The bird developed antibody titer to rabies, detected by passive haemagglutination, 27 days after oral inoculation by ingestion. The owl suppressed the infection until corticosteroid administration, after which a maximum antibody titer was attained. Evidence of active rabies viral infection was seen by fluorescent antibody staining of oral swabs, corneal impression smears and histologic tissue smears, by suckling mouse inoculation of oral swab washings, and by transmission electron microcopy. No clinical signs of rabies virus infection were observed.  相似文献

Owl predation on snowshoe hares: consequences of antipredator behaviour   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
We show evidence of differential predation on snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus) by great horned owls (Bubo virginianus) and ask whether predation mortality is related to antipredator behaviour in prey. We predicted higher predation on (1) young and inexperienced hares, (2) hares in open habitats lacking cover to protect from owl predation, and (3) hares in above average condition assuming that rich food patches are under highest risk of predation. Information on killed hares was obtained at nest sites of owls and by monitoring hares using radio-telemetry. The availability of age classes within the hare population was established from live-trapping and field data on reproduction and survival. Great horned owls preferred juvenile over adult hares. Juveniles were more vulnerable to owl predation before rather than after dispersal, suggesting that displacement or increased mobility were not causes for this increased mortality. Owls killed ratio-collared hares more often in open than in closed forest types, and they avoided or had less hunting success in habitats with dense shrub cover. Also, owls took hares in above average condition, although it is unclear whether samples from early spring are representative for other seasons. In conclusion, these results are consistent with the hypothesis that variation in antipredator behaviours of snowshoe hares leads to differential predation by great horned owls.  相似文献

We exposed naive Siberain polecats (Mustela eversmanni) (aged 2, 3, and 4 months) to a swooping stuffed great horned owl (Buho virginianus) and a stuffed badger (Taxidae taxus) mounted on a remote control toy automobile frame. The first introduction to each was harmless, the second was accompanied by a mild aversive stimulus, the third (1 day after attack) was harmless, and the fourth (30 days after attack) was harmless. Alert behavior increased after a single attack by either predator model. Escape responses of naive polecats did not differ between ages when exposed to the badger, but 4 month old polecats reduced their escape times after a single badger attack. When exposed to the swooping owl, naive 4 month old polecats redponded more quickly than the other two age groups, and 3 and 4 month old polecats reduced escape times after a single owl attack. This indicates an innate escape response to the owl model at 4 months of age, and a short-tert ability to remember a single mild aversive encounter with the badger and owl models at 3 or 4 months of age.  相似文献

Ideally, prey should respond to their predators efficiently, without over- or underreacting to the threat. This may be particularly important for small-bodied species for whom metabolic demands are high and predatory risk is great. In the current study, two family groups of Callithrix geoffroyi living outside in a rural setting at the Center for Reproduction of Endangered Species, San Diego Wild Animal Park, were observed before, during, and after ten presentations of a great horned owl model. The owl was mounted on a post on a nearby hillside, simulating a situation in which a real but nonimminent threat is posed. As controls, a model of a crow and a cloth bag were also presented, each for ten trials. During the 10 min presentations of the owl, rates of play and foraging decreased, and rates of locomotion and vigilant looking increased from baseline rates. Data on occupation of the best viewing area suggest that the marmosets shared the job of monitoring a potential threat. After the owl was removed, behavior quickly returned to baseline rates, with the exception of looking at the place where the owl had been, and play. Neither the bag nor the crow generated significant differences from the baseline condition that preceded it. Marmosets may reduce the costs of antipredator behavior by appropriately assessing the degree of risk and by quickly resuming important activities once a potential threat has passed. Am. J. Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are possible contaminants of concern in areas with a history of organochlorine pesticide production or various other industrial chlo-rination processes. The Rocky Mountain Arsenal (RMA), a Superfund site near Denver, CO, has a history of various industrial processes that may have led to the release of these compounds and subsequent exposure and risk to surrounding biota. PCDDs, and PCDFs, and non- and mono-ortho-substituted PCBs cause a common set of toxic effects that are mediated through the aryl-hydrocarbon receptor (AhR). The total AhR-medi-ated activity of tissue samples collected from the RMA and surrounding reference areas was determined by both instrumental and bioanalytical techniques. Concentrations of dioxin equivalents were measured in carp eggs, great horned owl livers, and American kestrel eggs collected from the RMA and from off-post reference sites. Detected concentrations of dioxin equivalents were used to assess risk to exposed wildlife through the use of Toxicity Reference Values (TRVs) and Hazard Quotients (HQs). Carp and kestrel egg samples had small HQ values, while some great horned owls had relatively large HQ values, indicating exposure to and possible risks from dioxins or dioxin-like chemicals.  相似文献

In the wild, pinyon jays (Gymnorhinus cyanocephalus) mob owls at all times of year, but our observations of wild birds suggested that the mobbing response was strongest during the breeding season. To test this, we placed four groups of five wild caught adult pinyon jays in environmental chambers during late autumn when their testes were regressed. These birds received photoperiods of 12, 12, 13 and 14 h for 30 days prior to being exposed singly to a live great horned owl (Bubo virginianus). Three groups of five birds were maintained under natural photoperiods in outdoor aviaries and were tested with the owl in Aug., Sep. and Nov. Birds on long artificial photoperiods mobbed more strongly than birds exposed to shorter photoperiods. The jays under natural photoperiods showed the opposite response: those tested in November mobbed significantly more strongly than birds tested in August. Jays with the weakest mobbing responses were molting, and those with the strongest responses seemed to be closest to reproductive readiness. There was no correlation between gonad size and mobbing intensity, but our results suggest a strong relationship between reproductive readiness and mobbing intensity in pinyon jays.  相似文献

This study examines prey selection by Magellanic horned owls (Bubo magellanicus) in an ecotonal steppe area of northwestern Argentine Patagonia, and analyzes morphological and behavioral traits of the owls main rodent prey. The owls diet was studied for two years, along with field estimates of rodent abundance. The frequency distribution of rodents was significantly different from that estimated from trapping, indicating that Magellanic horned owl behaved as a selective predator. Eligmodontia morgani and Abrothrix xanthorhinus, the smallest species inhabiting open areas, were consumed in lower proportion than their occurrence estimated from the trapped sample, whereas the larger Abrothrix longipilis and Oligoryzomys longicaudatus, which inhabited bushy habitats, were eaten in a greater proportion than their estimated abundance. It is suggested that distinctive morphological and behavioral characteristics among prey interacting with the owl hunting strategy, accounted for their differential vulnerability to predation.  相似文献

During October and November 1986, Sarcocystis sp. was detected in 24 of 56 (43%) tongues from hunter-killed mountain goats (Oreamnos americanus) in Washington (USA). Sarcocysts had an unusual sessile polyp-shaped branched wall. Mean size of 154 sarcocysts was 71.3 x 37.8 microns (range, 20 to 248 x 10 to 120 microns), and the mean intensity was 2.3 (range, 1 to 28). In an attempt to identify the definitive host, infected tongues were fed to four coyotes (Canis latrans), eight domestic dogs, four domestic cats, three bears (Ursus americanus), two raccoons (Procyon lotor), two martens (Martes americana), two fishers (Martes pennanti), three skunks (Mephitis mephitis), five mink (Mustela vison), five ferrets (Mustela putorius), one pigtail macaque (Macaca nemestrina), two red-tailed hawks (Buteo jamaicensis) and one great horned owl (Bubo virginianus). Oocysts or sporocysts were not detected in the feces of any host for less than or equal to 20 days after ingestion of the infected meat. The definitive host for Sarcocystis sp. in mountain goats was not identified.  相似文献

Community dynamics are essential for ecosystems as they support the functioning of food webs and maintain biodiversity. However, the fluctuations of species abundances are rarely analyzed simultaneously despite their interconnectedness across space and time. We developed a Bayesian multi-species model that estimates community- and taxon-level parameters related to dynamics, abundance, detection probability, and environmental stochasticity. From this model, we analyze the variability of populations of a community of raptors composed of accipiters (sharp-shinned hawk [Accipiter striatus], and Cooper's hawk [A. cooperii]), buteos (red-tailed hawk [Buteo jamaicensis], and red-shouldered hawk [B. lineatus]) and owls (great horned owl [Bubo virginianus], and barred owl [Strix varia]). We show that migration pulses of accipiters, buteos, and dispersal of fledging owls drive variation in raptor abundances, indicating a defined production and dispersal period. Also, large-scale climatic processes such as the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) influenced the variation in abundances of raptors. When the NAO was in a positive phase, the abundance of raptors decreased, and inversely. Local weather did not affect raptor population abundances. Our approach facilitated the modelling of species-specific effects of environmental variation and guild-level dynamics that could be used for ecosystem-based conservation measures.  相似文献

  1. We have studied the development of the refractive state in young barn owls (Tyto alba pratincola). Strikingly, the eyes had severe refractive errors shortly after lid opening (which occurred around day 14 after hatching; average from 6 owls: 13.83 ± 1.47 days). Refractive errors vanished in the subsequent one or two weeks (Fig. 1, Fig. 2).
  2. Refractive errors did not differ by more than 1 diopter (D) in both eyes of an individual (Fig. 2). Thus, non-visual control of eye growth was sufficient to produce non-random refractions. However, visual input was finally required to adjust the optical system to emmetropia.
  3. Using in-vivo A-scan ultrasonography of ocular dimensions (Fig. 4A), photokeratometric measurements of corneal radius of curvature (Fig. 4B), and frozen sections of excised eyes (Fig. 3), we developed paraxial schematic eye models which described age-dependent changes in ocular parameters and were applicable through the ages from lid opening to fledging (Table 1). A schematic eye for the adult barn owl (European subspecies: Tyto alba alba) is also provided. Eye sizes in an adult owl of the American (Tyto alba pratincola) and the European subspecies (T. alba alba) were similar despite of different body weights (500 g and 350 g, respectively).
  4. The schematic eyes were used to test which ocular parameters might have caused the recovery from refractive errors. However, none of the ocular dimensions measured underwent obvious changes in their growth curves as visual input became available. Apparently, coordinated growth of several ocular components produced emmetropia.
  5. From the schematic eye model, the developmental changes in image brightness and image magnification were calculated (Fig. 5). In barn owl eyes, image size was not quite as extreme as in the tawny owl or the great horned owl. However, the image was larger and the f/number was lower than in diurnal birds of comparable weight (pigeon, chicken). The observation supports a conclusion that image size is maximised in owls to permit a higher degree of photoreceptor convergence for higher light sensitivity at dusk while spatial acuity remains comparable to diurnal birds with smaller eyes.

Mathematical models of the snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus) and Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis) population cycles in the boreal forest have largely focused on the interaction between a single specialist predator and its prey. Here, we consider the role that other hare predators play in shaping the cycles, using a predator–prey model for up to three separate specialist predators. We consider the Canada lynx, coyote (Canis latrans) and great horned owl (Bubo virginianus). Our model improves on past modelling efforts in two ways: (1) our model solutions more closely represent the boreal hare and predator cycles with respect to the cycle period, maximum and minimum hare densities and maximum and minimum predator densities for each predator, and (2) our model sheds light on the role each specialist plays in regulation of the hare cycle, in particular, the dynamics of the raptor appear to be crucial for characterising the low hare densities correctly.  相似文献

Summary Mitotic chromosomes from the feather pulp and leucocyte cultures of the great horned owl (Bubo v. virginianus) were analyzed in both the sexes. The largest pair of chromosomes are acrocentrics while those of the second and the third pair have a short arm 1/6th the size of the large one. Chromosomes of the fourth and the fifth pairs have a median constriction while those of the 6th to 9th pairs are all acrocentrics. These are followed in order of size by a large number of smaller chromosomes, the smallest of which appear as dots. In 15 plates out of a total of 21, 82 to 84 chromosomes were counted and it is presumed that either of these numbers represents the diploid number. In the female sex besides the single unpaired 4th Z-chromosome, there is a small metacentric unpaired W chromosome which is nearly equal in size to the chromosomes of the 7th pair.Contribution No. 5729 Scientific Journal Series, Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station. We developed 37 great gray owl (Strix nebulosa) microsatellite primers from CA and TAGA enriched genomic libraries. Primers were tested in 15 great gray owls from California, USA and Alberta, Canada as well as two other Strix species, spotted owl (S. occidentalis) and barred owl (S. varia). These markers will have broad application in investigations of Strix population structure and genetic diversity.  相似文献

In this study we assessed whether local habitat features and host population density influenced disease risk in Eagle Owl Bubo bubo fledglings. Measures of immune defence (concentrations of circulating white blood cells), prevalence of three parasite types (a blood parasite Leucocytozoon ziemanni , an insect Carnus haemapterus , and a tick Rhipicephalus sp.) and total number of parasite species were used to quantify disease risk. We tested the hypotheses that disease risk in fledglings was higher in nests located in areas with higher length of and proximity to watercourses (as a higher abundance and viability of parasites and vectors occur in wetter areas), higher cover of forest (as forest moistness and humidity can favour higher vector and parasite proliferation), higher habitat diversity (as environmental heterogeneity increases the pool of potential vectors and parasites) and higher local owl population density (as disease transmission might be density-dependent). The clearest relationship was with the proximity of freshwater, although the other hypotheses were also partially supported. Concentrations of white blood cells, the number of parasite species and, weakly, the prevalence of Carnus haemapterus were all higher in nests closer to watercourses. The prevalence of blood parasites increased with the cover of forested areas. Fledglings from nests located in more diverse habitats had higher white blood cell concentrations and showed higher prevalence of blood parasites. Finally, local host population density was positively correlated with the prevalence of blood parasites. The results suggest the existence of complex and interrelated links between ecological parameters and three different measures of disease risk, and highlight the importance of immunological approaches to assess disease risk at an intraspecific level.  相似文献

Selection of receptors is a key element of ecological risk and natural resource damage assessments. The great horned owl (Bubo virginianus; GHO) has advantages as a tertiary terrestrial receptor and integrated measure of exposure to chemical residues in a multiple-lines-of-evidence approach that includes elucidation of contaminant exposure by measured (tissue-based) and predicted (dietary) methodologies, and population-level measures of potential adverse effects (i.e., productivity, abundance). Methods described herein exploited attributes of GHO behavior, including its propensity to nest in artificial nesting platforms. This approach allowed better control of experimental conditions, minimized uncertainty in assessment endpoints, and maximized data utility for testing hypotheses. During 5 years, 54 GHO nests (14 active territories) along 38 km of river floodplain were monitored at the Kalamazoo River Superfund Site (Kalamazoo/Allegan Counties, Michigan). Concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and otho-, para-substituted isomers of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), including DDD/DDE (Σ DDTs), were measured in 24 eggs and 16 samples of nestling blood plasma. Dietary PCB exposure was predicted by determining site-specific dietary composition and sampling and quantifying PCB concentrations in 171 prey items collected within active GHO territories. The convergence of exposure and effects assessments improved confidence in resulting predictions of minimal risk to resident GHO populations (Hazard Quotients ≤1.5). Repeated GHO use of nesting platforms minimized temporal and spatial variability.  相似文献

Four‐horned sheep are an ideal animal model for illuminating the genetic basis of horn development. The objective of this study was to locate the genetic region responsible for the four‐horned phenotype and to verify a previously reported polled locus in three Chinese breeds. A genome‐wide association study (GWAS) was performed using 34 two‐horned and 32 four‐horned sheep from three Chinese indigenous breeds: Altay, Mongolian and Sishui Fur sheep. The top two significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with the four‐horned phenotype were both located in a region spanning positions 132.6 to 132.7 Mb on sheep chromosome 2. Similar locations for the four‐horned trait were previously identified in Jacob, Navajo‐Churro, Damara and Sishui Fur sheep, suggesting a common genetic component underlying the four‐horned phenotype. The two identified SNPs were both downstream of the metaxin 2 (MTX2) gene and the HOXD gene cluster. For the top SNP—OAR2:g.132619300G>A—the strong associations of the AA and AG genotypes with the four‐horned phenotype and the GG genotype with the two‐horned phenotype indicated the dominant inheritance of the four‐horned trait. No significant SNPs for the polled phenotype were identified in the GWAS analysis, and a PCR analysis for the detection of the 1.8‐kb insertion associated with polled sheep in other breeds failed to verify the association with polledness in the three Chinese breeds. This study supports the hypothesis that two different loci are responsible for horn existence and number. This study contributes to the understanding of the molecular regulation of horn development and enriches the knowledge of qualitative traits in domestic animals.  相似文献

Postmortem examination of a captive-bred American kestrel (Falco sparverius) showed numerous white necrotic foci 1-2 mm in diameter throughout the liver and spleen. The results of light and spleen. The results of light and electron microscopic studies and experimental transmission to a captive American kestrel and a barred owl (Strix varia) suggests a herpesvirus similar to those dsecribed for owls and other falcons in the U.S. This is the first report of a naturally occurring case of inclusion body disease of falcons in the American kestrel.  相似文献

Serum samples from 62 owl monkeys were analyzed to determine concentrations of creatine kinase activity and isozymes. Fifty monkeys were determined to be clinically normal, while twelve had cardiac disease. Findings showed that the data had a non-normal distribution. Based on nonparametric tests, significant differences were not observed between sexes or animals with and without cardiac disease, indicating that CK activity and isozymes are not reliable indicators of myocardial disease in the owl monkey. Reference values presented are only intended as a guide. Each laboratory should determine its own reference values.  相似文献

Nocturnal species may communicate by visual signals more frequentlythan previously thought. In fact, such species are habituallyactive around sunset and sunrise, when light conditions arestill suitable for visual communication. We investigated thecommunication function of a visual cue in the eagle owl Bubobubo, a nocturnal predator. In this species, territorial andcourtship displays peak during the sunset and sunrise periodsand involve the display of a white badge located on the throatwhose reflectance properties are sex and period dependent. Experimentalintrusions were conducted at 30 eagle owl territories in orderto understand the function of the white badge during contests. We analyzed the reactions of both male and female owners towarda taxidermic mount with a normal brightness and a brightness-reducedwhite badge, with both male and female territorial calls. Ourresults indicate that the white badge of eagle owls plays animportant role in visual communication during contests. Malesdisplayed more frequently toward male low-brightness mounts, which were also approached more closely or attacked. Femalebehavior did not differ between experimental groups. Furthermore,a positive relationship between male badge brightness and breedingoutput suggested a potential role of the white badge as an honestsignal of male quality. The need to convey information by visualcommunication in a nocturnal species may have promoted the evolutionof visual signals employed at crepuscule.  相似文献

Inclusion body disease of falcons (IBDF) is caused by a herpesvirus. The clinical course is short, 24 to 72 hours in duration, and is characterized by mild to severe depression and weakness often accompanied by anorexia. The disease is invariably fatal. The virus has a marked affinity for the reticuloendothelial system and hepatocytes, producing focal to diffuse necrosis of infected tissues accompanied by the formation of intranuclear inclusion bodies. The virus is pathogenic for American kestrels (Falco sparverius) and great horned owls (Bubo virginianus) in which typical lesions of IBDF are reproduced. The lesions of IBDF are similar to those produced by some herpesvirus infections in other avian species.  相似文献
