We describe a new karyotype for Cavia magna Ximenez, 1980 from an estuarine island and the karyotype of Cavia aperea Erxleben, 1777 from an adjacent mainland. The species have differences in diploid number (2n), autosomal fundamental number, quantity, and distribution of heterochromatin as dissimilar distributions of the nucleolus-organizing regions (Ag-NORs). The C. aperea karyotype has a diploid number of 64 as previously reported for C. aperea and most other Cavia species. In contrast, this new C. magna karyotype exhibits a variant diploid number of 2n = 62, considering that previous work reported a karyotype of 2n = 64 for C. magna. The discovery of a distinct diploid number within C. magna represents the first record of intra-specific chromosomal variation in a species of Caviidae. The diploid number of 2n = 62, heterochromatin quantity, Ag-NOR distributions, and inversed X chromosome from this population of C. magna are as seen in the geographically proximate (Cavia intermedia Cherem Olimpio and Ximenez; intermediate Cavy). These data provide further evidence supporting C. magna as the sister species of C. intermedia.  相似文献

This paper reports on the morphological variations of six Schizothoracinae species, including Aspiorhynchus laticeps, Schizothorax biddulphi, Schizothorax eurystomus, Schizothorax barbatus, Schizothorax intermedia, and Diptychus maculatus, the first reference to the morphological characters of these species. Based on the results from the cluster analysis, S. biddulphi and S. eurystomus are the most morphologically similar, with their Euclidean distances within 0.0167; their morphological similarity to S. intermedia, A. laticeps, and D. maculatus is gradually reduced, with an increase in the Euclidean distance from 0.0317 to 0.5765.  相似文献

The goal for this project was to re‐examine key morphological characters hypothesized to differentiate Gila intermedia, Gila robusta and Gila nigra and outline methods better suited for making species designations based on morphology. Using a combination of meristic counts, morphological measurements and geometric morphometrics, morphological dissimilarities were quantified among these three putative species. Traditional meristic counts and morphological measurements (i.e. distances between landmarks) were not useful for species identification. Geometric morphometrics, however, identified differences among species, while also suggesting an effect of geographic location on morphological variation. Using canonical variate analysis for the 441 fish sampled in this study, geometric morphometrics accurately predicted true group membership 100% of the time for G. nigra, 97% of the time for G. intermedia and 91% of the time for G. robusta. These results suggest that geometric morphometric analysis is necessary to identify morphological differences among the three species. Geometric morphometric analysis used in this study can be adopted by management officials as a tool to classify unidentified individuals.  相似文献

Seeds of the widespread weed Plantago major were collected from 10 European countries, as well as Trinidad and North America. The seed collections were from populations of two taxa which are ecologically rather than geographically separated and formally recognized as the subspecies Plantago major ssp. major and P.m. ssp. intermedia (also called P.m. ssp. pleiosperma). Eight polymorphic allozyme loci and 73 random-primed DNA fragments were scored, as well as 11 morphological characters. Complete concordance between morphological traits and genetic data provides evidence that these two taxa, although very similar, are distinct species. They are both widespread, they are broadly sympatric and capable of interbreeding. However, slight morphological and ecological differences coincide with genetic clustering of populations from widely separated locations. In addition, P. major and P. intermedia differ in their population structure: P. intermedia has greater genetic diversity among populations and less genetic variance within populations than P. major. We suggest that differences between the two species in their levels of selfing may explain the distinctive genetic structure of each species. We hypothesize a link between selfing rate and lifespan of the two taxa. P. major is characterized by lower genetic variation among populations, a higher rate of outcrossing, longer lifespan and production of fewer seeds per seed capsule. P. intermedia is more highly structured with much differentiation among populations, a higher rate of inbreeding and it often grows as an annual.  相似文献

The locations in mussels of four species of watermites, Unionicola aculeata, U. bonzi, U. intermedia and U. ypsilophora and their degrees of parasitism have been compared. Unionicola aculeata and U. bonzi do not live parasitic and need Anodonta anatina and Unio pictorum respectively as a shelter for their transformation stages. Unionicola intermedia and U. ypsilophora live parasitic on the gills of Anodonta anatina and A. cygnea respectively. Every female of Unionicola ypsilophora has a territory in the mussel, as contrasted with U. intermedia, many females of which are found together. The consequences for the population density are discussed.Zoological Laboratory, University of Amsterdam  相似文献

In this study, the potential for Rhodobacter sphaeroides, a purple nonsulfur photosynthetic strain of bacteria, to act as a physiological activation material for water flea, Daphnia magna, was tested under two different culture conditions: i.e. YTC (a 1:1 mixture of yeast: Tetramin: Ceropyl) as a basal diet with Selenastrum capricormutrum, a green microalga, and YTC with physiologically activating compounds (PACs), which were defined as mixed organic compounds produced in R. sphaeroides. The impact of PACs produced in R. sphaeroides was assessed by the viability, growth and reproduction of D. magna until the third generation. Compared to S. capricormutrum, it was found that the number of baby daphnia increased after addition to D. magna of PACs produced from dark-cultured R. sphaeroides. Also, we demonstrated that PACs produced from dark-cultured R. sphaeroides influenced individual D. magna growth parameters, such as body length, survival and number of broods per female. Here, we also studied the effect of enhanced sensitivity of D. magna to toxic materials, i.e. titanium oxide and methidathion, when D. magna were grown in culture using PACs. The data provide strong evidence that R. sphaeroides has the potential to substantially increase the physiological activity of D. magna.  相似文献

The main difference between the sponge genera Leucilla and Paraleucilla (Porifera, Calcarea, Amphoriscidae) is the presence of a disorganized zone (DZ) in the inner region of the skeleton of the latter genus. However, it has been repeatedly observed that specimens from different species of Paraleucilla lack this feature. It is assumed that the size of the sponge may have an effect on the presence or the absence of the DZ, but no investigation of this morphological variation has previously tested this hypothesis. Here, we examined this assumption and described the frequency with which the DZ is absent from individuals of Paraleucilla magna. We also investigated possible drivers of the observed variation using generalized linear models to evaluate whether the month of the year, rainfall, reproductive activity, volume, and body wall thickness could influence the presence or the absence of the DZ. The DZ was absent from 46.5% of the analyzed individuals, indicating that it may be misleading to use this trait to identify the genera Leucilla and Paraleucilla. The presence of the DZ in P. magna is influenced negatively by volume and positively by body wall thickness of the individuals. Our results confirm the previous assumptions for the family Amphoriscidae and highlight problems with the current classification of Calcarea. A discussion of the validity of some morphological characters and the importance of analyzing their variation is provided.  相似文献

The sap-sucking mirid, Falconia intermedia (Distant) (Hemiptera: Miridae), released as a biological control agent of Lantana camara L. (Verbenaceae) in South Africa in 1999, has established at only one site. We investigated the role of induced plant defences as a possible explanation for this lack of establishment. F. intermedia inoculated plants from the five test varieties significantly increased the toughness of their new leaves compared to control plants. Additionally, plants from three L. camara varieties significantly increased leaf trichome density on new leaves after prolonged feeding by F. intermedia, significantly reducing F. intermedia oviposition, survival and feeding damage. The defensive responses were systemic and rapidly induced about eight weeks after insect feeding. We suggest that these leaf quality responses played a role in the non-establishment of F. intermedia in South Africa.  相似文献

The role that temperature plays in excluding large daphnid species from subtropical and tropical ponds, and competitive relationships between Daphnia laevis and Daphnia magna, are explored. D. magna, a large temperate species is probably not excluded from subtropical or tropical systems by elevated temperatures. However, D. magna was a poorer competitor, under a restricted set of laboratory conditions, than D. laevis, the only pond dwelling daphnid in subtropical Florida. Competition is proposed as one mechanism that may limit the number of daphnid species in subtropical and tropical ponds and lakes. Reduced environmental fluctuations in subtropical and tropical systems (compared with temperate systems) may allow zooplankton populations to reach an environmental carrying capacity where competition limits the number of similar, coexisting species in a habitat.  相似文献

The yucca moths (Tegeticula and Parategeticula) are of great importance in studies of coevolution because of their obligate mutualism with their yucca hosts. Historically, three species of Tegeticula have been recognized. One of them, T. yuccasella, has been regarded as the pollinator of all but two yucca species, but morphological, molecular and biological data show that this is a large complex of monophagous and oligophagous species that differ greatly in their biology. It also includes derived ‘cheater’ species that do not pollinate their hosts and oviposit into fruits rather than flowers. Here the yuccasella complex north of Mexico is revised. The nominotypic pollinator species yuccasella is redescribed, and ten new pollinator species described: altiplanella, baccatella, carnerosanella, cassandra, elatella, maderae, mojavella, rostratella, superficiella and treculeanella. Two non-pollinating cheater species are recognized. One such species originally misidentified as a Prodoxus species, then synonymised with yuccasella, is re-erected as the non-pollinating intermedia. In addition, the new non-pollinator species corruptrix is described.  相似文献

Rheophilous Osmunda lancea often hybridizes with a dryland ally, Osmunda japonica, to produce O. × intermedia, forming zonation in riverbanks and the adjacent dryland along flooding frequency clines. This study examined the genetic structure of populations consisting of O. × intermedia and the two parental species by analyzing ten nuclear DNA markers [six cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence (CAPS) markers and three simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers developed from an expressed sequence tag (EST) library, and the sequence of the glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase gene GapCp] and chloroplast DNA sequences. The results suggest that the nuclear genes of O. japonica and O. lancea are genetically differentiated despite shared polymorphism in their chloroplast DNA sequences. This discrepancy may be attributable to natural selection and recent introgression, although it is not evident if introgression occurs between O. japonica and O. lancea in the examined populations. Our findings of putative F2 hybrids in O. × intermedia support its partial reproducibility, and also suggest that formation of later-generation hybrids generates morphological variation in O. × intermedia. O. lancea plants collected from geographically distant localities were genetically very similar, and it is suggested that O. lancea originated monotopically.  相似文献

Discula betulina is a foliar pathogen on birch (Betula) and Gnomonia intermedia is found on overwintered birch leaves. Perithecia of G. intermedia developed in vitro on colonies of D. betulina isolated from birch tissues in late summer, and single ascospores of G. intermedia consistently developed into colonies similar to D. betulina, producing typical D. betulina conidia. Isolates of D. betulina could be grouped into two mating types, which produced fertile perithecia of G. intermedia when mated with each other. Mycelia from single-ascospore and single-conidial isolates were inoculated onto shoots of downy birch, causing lesions and die-back from which D. betulina was consistently isolated. ITS region ribosomal DNA sequence analysis confirmed the results of the morphological and mating studies, and found that the closest known relatives of G. intermedia/D. betulina are Gnomoniella nana and Sirococcus clavigignenti-juglandacearum. The conclusion from these studies is that D. betulina is the anamorph of G. intermedia.  相似文献

The co-occurring freshwater mussels Anodonta cygnea and A. anatina serve as hosts for the water mites Unionicola ypsilophora and U. intermedia, respectively. Male U. ypsilophora display a territorial behaviour. They fight with other males, and as a result, there is usually only one male per host. As a consequence, this intrasexual aggression results in female-defence polygyny, or a harem mating system. In contrast, U. intermedia shows no antagonistic behaviour between males. A. cygnea can serve as a host for U. intermedia, but this mite species apparently is excluded from the mussel by U. ypsilophora. In this way, U. intermedia is restricted by competitive exclusion to the mussel A. anatina.  相似文献

A new species, Tulipa intermedia, collected in the Ferghana Depression is described. The new species belongs to section T. sect. Kolpakowskianae Raamsd. ex Zonn. & Veldkamp. It is similar to T. scharipovii Tojibaev and T. talassica Lazkov but is distinguished by morphological characters of bulbs and flowers and by its ecology, growing only in Artemisia steppe on plains and in low foothills with gravelly slopes. From T. scharipovii, the new species differs by non‐coriaceous and strongly prolongated bulb tunics, pubescence of tunics, shorter stem, shape of outer petals and filaments, and by its pale yellow (not green) bottle‐shaped ovary. Two varieties of T. intermedia differing in the colour of tepals and filaments were observed growing together and are formally described.  相似文献

Abstract

The large amount of morphological variability within Fritillaria montana Hoppe ex W.D.J. Koch, a southeastern European species described from northeastern Italy, led to the creation of several further taxa: Fritillaria caussolensis Goaty & Pons ex Adoino from southeastern France, Fritillaria orsiniana Parl. from central Italy, Fritillaria intermedia N. Terracc. and Fritillaria pollinensis N. Terracc. from southern Italy. Aiming to test the taxonomic value of these taxa, a biometric study of both herbarium and living specimens of F. montana s.l. is carried out. A total of 22 morphological features were analysed and measured in 417 plants from 46 different localities, including loci classici of all the involved taxa. In addition, typical populations of F. montana, F. caussolensis, F. intermedia, F. orsiniana and F. pollinensis and also several other Italian populations resulted with 2n = 18 chromosomes. We also counted 2n = 27 chromosomes in endotriploid cells of plants from Abruzzo. However, there is no clear‐cut correlation between morphology and karyology. The biometric analysis, together with many observations on fresh material in the field, revealed that F. montana is a single polymorphic species with no infraspecific taxa.  相似文献

Life-history traits of two coexisting cladocerans, Daphnia magna Straus and Scapheloberis kingi Sars, inhabiting a temporary pond in north-eastern Algeria were monitored in 2013 under laboratory conditions. Their life histories were compared for differences in traits such as age and size at first reproduction, size of neonates, brood size, number of broods per female, total life span and intrinsic rate of increase (rm). Data were recorded during their entire life cycle. Daphnia magna, the larger species, could possibly be more successful in colonising temporary habitats than S. kingi because it allocates more energy to reproduction. Scapheloberis kingi, the smaller species, starts reproduction early, resulting in a smaller brood size and a shorter life span with fewer broods. Consequently, S. kingi produces a smaller number of neonates during its lifetime and has a lower rm. In contrast, D. magna delays reproduction but produces a larger brood size and, because it is longer-lived, produces more broods and so produces a greater number of neonates and has a higher rm over its lifetime.  相似文献

Plants of the genus Caragana (Fabaceae) are dominant shrub species of high ecological and economic importance on the Ordos Plateau in China. Due to natural environmental variability and anthropogenic impacts, Caragana pastures have experienced severe degradation, which has decreased their carrying capacity. In this study, we investigated the genetic diversity of eight Caragana species (C. purdomii, C. opulens, C. stenophylla, C. intermedia, C. korshinskii, C. roborovskyi, C. tibetica and C. brachypoda) on the Ordos Plateau by using ISSR markers. The results reveal high genetic diversity of all the species, with the percentage of polymorphic bands (PPB) reaching 100%. However, interspecific differences in genetic diversity within the genus were significant, as indicated by higher levels of genetic diversity of C. stenophylla, C. tibetica, C. intermedia, C. korshinskii and C. roborovskyi (PPB > 86%) when compared to the C. brachypoda with the lowest genetic diversity (PPB = 42.86%). Caragana brachypoda showed the lowest genetic similarity with and largest genetic distance from other taxa of the genus. Caragana tibetica had higher genetic diversity than C. roborovskyi. A large genetic distance was found between C. roborovskyi and C. tibetica, although the two species belong to Ser. Tragacanthoides and grow in a semidesert area. Such differences in genetic structure may be the reason for large areas occupied by C. tibetica, whereas C. roborovsky has rather limited distribution in the semidesert area. Caragana intermedia had high genetic diversity and a large genetic differentiation between intraspecific populations implying strong adaptability of the species to environmental fluctuations and selection capabilities. There was an obvious gene flow between C. intermedia and C. korshinskii, suggesting possible hybridization between these species is consistent with ecological variability, which may be important characteristics of Caragana plants in terms of molecular variation in the ecotone of Ordos plateau. Our results provide a molecular basis for sustainable management, utilization and conservation of Caragana plants on the Ordos plateau.  相似文献

Gametogenesis in Calcarea is still poorly known; therefore, in this work, we describe the gametogenesis of Paraleucilla magna (Porifera, Calcarea) using light and electron microscopy. Male and female gametes derived from choanocytes. Oocytes grew inside a follicle-like structure composed of pinacocyte-like cells and choanocytes. They were nourished through nutrient transfer from nurse cells and through bacteria phagocytosis, which was never documented for a calcarean species. Mature oocytes were typical, spherical, with nucleolated nuclei and a cytoplasm filled with different types of inclusions and digestive vesicles. Nuage was also found. Spermatogenesis occurred in the lumen of differentiated choanocyte chambers, and spermatic cysts were never formed. Spherical spermatogonia without flagellum or collar were derived from hourglass-shaped primordial germ cells. Spermatozoa were of the ‘aberrant type’, showed a compact electron-dense nucleus and a homogeneous granulated body in its cytoplasm. The gametogenesis of P. magna is similar to what has been observed for other Porifera and Eumetazoa.  相似文献
