Despite substantial advances in milk production efficiency of dairy cattle over the last 50 years, rising feed costs remain a significant threat to producer profitability. There also is a greater emphasis being placed on reducing the negative impacts of dairy production on the environment; thus means to lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and nutrient losses to the environment associated with cattle production are being sought. Improving feed efficiency among dairy cattle herds offers an opportunity to address both of these issues for the dairy industry. However, the best means to assess feed efficiency and make genetic progress in efficiency-related traits among lactating cows without negatively impacting other economically important traits is not entirely obvious. In this review, multiple measurements of feed efficiency for lactating cows are described, as well as the heritability of the traits and their genetic and phenotypic correlations with other production traits. The measure of feed efficiency, residual feed intake is discussed in detail in terms of the benefits for its selection, how it could be assessed in large commercial populations, as well as biological mechanisms contributing to its variation among cows, as it has become a commonly used method to estimate efficiency in the recent scientific literature.  相似文献

For lignocellulosic bioenergy to become a viable alternative to traditional energy production methods, rapid increases in conversion efficiency and biomass yield must be achieved. Increased productivity in bioenergy production can be achieved through concomitant gains in processing efficiency as well as genetic improvement of feedstock that have the potential for bioenergy production at an industrial scale. The purpose of this review is to explore the genetic and genomic resource landscape for the improvement of a specific bioenergy feedstock group, the C4 bioenergy grasses. First, bioenergy grass feedstock traits relevant to biochemical conversion are examined. Then we outline genetic resources available bioenergy grasses for mapping bioenergy traits to DNA markers and genes. This is followed by a discussion of genomic tools and how they can be applied to understanding bioenergy grass feedstock trait genetic mechanisms leading to further improvement opportunities.  相似文献

Pelleting is the most prevalent heat treatment in the production of poultry feed. The objective of pelleting is to agglomerate smaller feed particles into larger particles as pellets to enhance the economics of production by increasing the feed intake, and thus growth performance and feed efficiency. However, due to the heat, moisture and mechanical pressure applied during conditioning and pelleting, some chemical and physical alterations occur that may have beneficial or detrimental effects on feed components, gastrointestinal development and subsequent bird performance. Pelleting process has been shown to gelatinise starch, but only to a small extent, and thus may be of modest relevance in starch digestion. Pelleting process may also result in partial denaturation of proteins; a process which can potentially improve protein and to some extent starch digestibility due to inactivation of proteinaceous enzyme inhibitors. Cell wall breakage, as a result of the physical stress of pelleting, may also provide greater accessibility of nutrient contents, previously encapsulated within endosperm sub-aleurone, to digestive enzymes. In diets based on viscous cereals, nutrient availability may be negatively affected through increased digesta viscosity as a result of either an increase in soluble carbohydrate concentration or changes in the molecular weight of soluble fibres or both, due to pelleting. Pelleting process also remains a potentially aggressive process on the stability of exogenous feed enzymes and vitamins, a major concern of feed manufacturers. Particle size-reducing property of the pelleting process may result in a suboptimal gizzard development and thus reduced nutrient digestibility of diets for poultry. While physical pellet quality is a critical factor to optimise feed efficiency and growth response of broilers, the present review highlights that it is the balance between nutrient availability and physical quality of pellets which is critical in determining the actual performance of broilers. Under the conventional pelleting process, good pellet quality is usually obtained at the expense of nutritional quality. Research is warranted to identify and evaluate possible strategies to manufacture highly digestible high quality pellets. Such strategies will require novel approaches of improving feed hygiene which are not detrimental to feed nutrients.  相似文献

Selection for the wide range of traits for which most beef breed associations calculate expected progeny differences focus on increasing the outputs of the production system, thereby increasing the genetic potential of cattle for reproductive rates, weights, growth rates, and end-product yield. Feed costs, however, represent a large proportion of the variable cost of beef production and genetic improvement programs for reducing input costs should include traits related to feed utilization. Feed conversion ratio, defined as feed inputs per unit output, is a traditional measure of efficiency that has significant phenotypic and genetic correlations with feed intake, growth rate, and mature size. One limitation is that favorable decreases in feed to gain either directly or due to correlated response to increasing growth rate do not necessarily relate to improvement in efficiency of feed utilization. Residual feed intake is defined as the difference between actual feed intake and that predicted on the basis of requirements for maintenance of body weight and production. Phenotypic independence of residual feed intake with growth rate, body weight, and other energy depots can be forced. However, genetic associations may remain when a phenotypic prediction approach is used. Heritability estimates for phenotypic residual feed intake have been moderate, ranging from 0.26 to 0.43. Genetic correlations of phenotypic residual feed intake with feed intake have been large and positive, suggesting that improvement would produce a correlated response of decreased feed intake. Residual feed intake estimated by genetic regression results in a zero genetic correlation with its predictors, which reduces concerns over long-term antagonistic responses such as increased mature size and maintenance requirements. The genetic regression approach requires knowledge of genetic covariances of feed intake with weight and production traits. Cost of individual feed intake measurements on potential replacements must be considered in implementation of national cattle evaluations for efficiency of feed utilization. These costs need to be compared to expected, and, if possible, realized rates of genetic change and the associated reduction in feed input requirements.  相似文献

Feed is a major component of variable costs associated with dairy systems and is therefore an important consideration for breeding objectives. As a result, measures of feed efficiency are becoming popular traits for genetic analyses. Already, several countries account for feed efficiency in their breeding objectives by approximating the amount of energy required for milk production, maintenance, etc. However, variation in actual feed intake is currently not captured in dairy selection objectives, although this could be possible by evaluating traits such as residual feed intake (RFI), defined as the difference between actual and predicted feed (or energy) intake. As feed intake is expensive to accurately measure on large numbers of cows, phenotypes derived from it are obvious candidates for genomic selection provided that: (1) the trait is heritable; (2) the reliability of genomic predictions are acceptable to those using the breeding values; and (3) if breeding values are estimated for heifers, rather than cows then the heifer and cow traits need to be correlated. The accuracy of genomic prediction of dry matter intake (DMI) and RFI has been estimated to be around 0.4 in beef and dairy cattle studies. There are opportunities to increase the accuracy of prediction, for example, pooling data from three research herds (in Australia and Europe) has been shown to increase the accuracy of genomic prediction of DMI from 0.33 within country to 0.35 using a three-country reference population. Before including RFI as a selection objective, genetic correlations with other traits need to be estimated. Weak unfavourable genetic correlations between RFI and fertility have been published. This could be because RFI is mathematically similar to the calculation of energy balance and failure to account for mobilisation of body reserves correctly may result in selection for a trait that is similar to selecting for reduced (or negative) energy balance. So, if RFI is to become a selection objective, then including it in an overall multi-trait selection index where the breeding objective is net profit is sensible, as this would allow genetic correlations with other traits to be properly accounted for. If genetic parameters are accurately estimated then RFI is a logical breeding objective. If there is uncertainty in these, then DMI may be preferable.  相似文献

Records on groups of individuals could be valuable for predicting breeding values when a trait is difficult or costly to measure on single individuals, such as feed intake and egg production. Adding genomic information has shown improvement in the accuracy of genetic evaluation of quantitative traits with individual records. Here, we investigated the value of genomic information for traits with group records. Besides, we investigated the improvement in accuracy of genetic evaluation for group-recorded traits when including information on a correlated trait with individual records. The study was based on a simulated pig population, including three scenarios of group structure and size. The results showed that both the genomic information and a correlated trait increased the accuracy of estimated breeding values (EBVs) for traits with group records. The accuracies of EBV obtained from group records with a size 24 were much lower than those with a size 12. Random assignment of animals to pens led to lower accuracy due to the weaker relationship between individuals within each group. It suggests that group records are valuable for genetic evaluation of a trait that is difficult to record on individuals, and the accuracy of genetic evaluation can be considerably increased using genomic information. Moreover, the genetic evaluation for a trait with group records can be greatly improved using a bivariate model, including correlated traits that are recorded individually. For efficient use of group records in genetic evaluation, relatively small group size and close relationships between individuals within one group are recommended.Subject terms: Genetic markers, Animal breeding  相似文献

Summary Sire and dam populations of meat-type chickens were developed at the Animal Research Centre, Ottawa to provide unselected control populations suitable for modern broiler research, estimate genetic parameters of broiler traits, and initiate selection experiments. The populations were synthesized from 16 commercial broiler parent stocks (nine sire and seven dam stocks) during two generations of crossbreeding and one generation of random mating. The estimated genetic contribution per stock to the respective population ranged from 8.3 to 16.7% for autosomal genes, from 5.5 to 17.8% for genes on Z chromosomes, and from 0 to 25.0% for genes on W chromosomes. Genetic differences among the original stocks had not been fully diffused among individuals within the populations at the time parameters were estimated. Consequently, genetic parameter estimates are probably slightly biased. Estimated heritabilities of broiler traits in these populations were generally high, 0.39 to 0.63. Hence, rapid genetic change of these traits is possible. The genetic correlation between 28 to 49 day feed efficiency and corresponding weight gain was 0.69 and between feed efficiency and abdominal fat percentage was -0.68. Increasing body weight gain, improving feed efficiency and reducing abdominal fatness of broilers by selection appears feasible.Contribution No. 1203, Animal Research Centre  相似文献

There is a growing interest to improve feed efficiency (FE) traits in cattle. The genomic selection was proposed to improve these traits since they are difficult and expensive to measure. Up to date, there are scarce studies about the implementation of genomic selection for FE traits in indicine cattle under different scenarios of pseudo-phenotypes, models, and validation strategies on a commercial large scale. Thus, the aim was to evaluate the feasibility of genomic selection implementation for FE traits in Nelore cattle applying different models and pseudo-phenotypes under validation strategies. Phenotypic and genotypic information from 4 329 and 3 467 animals were used, respectively, which were tested for residual feed intake, DM intake, feed efficiency, feed conversion ratio, residual BW gain, and residual intake and BW gain. Six prediction methods were used: single-step genomic best linear unbiased prediction, Bayes A, Bayes B, Bayes Cπ, Bayesian least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (BLASSO), and Bayes R. Phenotypes adjusted for fixed effects (Y*), estimated breeding value (EBV), and EBV deregressed (DEBV) were used as pseudo-phenotypes. The validation approaches used were: (1) random: the data was randomly divided into ten subsets and the validation was done in each subset at a time; (2) age: the partition into training and testing sets was based on year of birth and testing animals were born after 2016; and (3) EBV accuracy: the data was split into two groups, being animals with accuracy above 0.45 the training set; and below 0.45 the validation set. In the analyses that used the Y* as pseudo-phenotype, prediction ability (PA) was obtained by dividing the correlation between pseudo-phenotype and genomic EBV (GEBV) by the square root of the heritability of the trait. When EBV and DEBV were used as the pseudo-phenotype, the simple correlation of this quantity with the GEBV was considered as PA. The prediction methods show similar results for PA and bias. The random cross-validation presented higher PA (0.17) than EBV accuracy (0.14) and age (0.13). The PA was higher for Y* than for EBV and DEBV (30.0 and 34.3%, respectively). Random validation presented the highest PA, being indicated for use in populations composed mainly of young animals and traits with few generations of data recording. For high heritability traits, the validation can be done by age, enabling the prediction of the next-generation genetic merit. These results would support breeders to identify genomic approaches that are more viable for genomic prediction for FE-related traits.  相似文献

Behavioural adaptation of farm animals to environmental changes contributes to high levels of production under a wide range of farming conditions, from highly controlled indoor systems to harsh outdoor systems. The genetic variation in livestock behaviour is considerable. Animals and genotypes with a larger behavioural capacity for adaptation may cope more readily with varying farming conditions than those with a lower capacity for adaptation. This capacity should be exploited when the aim is to use a limited number of species extensively across the world. The genetics of behavioural traits is understood to some extent, but it is seldom accounted for in breeding programmes. This review summarizes the estimates of genetic parameters for behavioural traits in cattle, pigs, poultry and fish. On the basis of the major studies performed in the last two decades, we focus the review on traits of common interest in the four species. These concern the behavioural responses to both acute and chronic stressors in the physical environment (feed, temperature, etc.) and those in the social environment (other group members, progeny, humans). The genetic strategies used to improve the behavioural capacity for adaptation of animals differ between species. There is a greater emphasis on responses to acute environmental stress in fish and birds, and on responses to chronic social stress in mammals.  相似文献

The performance of birds appears to vary among the flock of growing broilers which may in part be due to variation in their gut microbiota. In the view of poultry industry, it is desirable to minimise such variation. We investigated metagenomic profile of fecal bacteria in birds with high and low feed conversion ratio (FCR) to identify microbial community linked to low and high FCR by employing high throughput pyrosequencing of 16S rRNA genomic targets. Therefore feeding trial was investigated in order to identify fecal bacteria consistently linked with better feed conversion ratio in bird performance as measured by body weight gain. High-throughput 16S rRNA gene based pyrosequencing was used to provide a comparative analysis of fecal microbial diversity. The fecal microbial community of birds was predominated by Proteobacteria (48.04?% in high FCR and 49.98?% in low FCR), Firmicutes (26.17?% in high FCR and 36.23?% in low FCR), Bacteroidetes (18.62?% in high FCR and 11.66?% in low FCR), as well as unclassified bacteria (15.77?% in high FCR and 14.29?% in low FCR), suggesting that a large portion of fecal microbiota is novel and could be involved in currently unknown functions. The most prevalent bacterial classes in high FCR and low FCR were Gammaproteobacteria, Clostridia and Bacteroidia. However in low FCR birds Phascolarctobacterium, Faecalibacterium and Clostridium predominated among the Clostridia. In FCR comparison of fecal bacteria, about 36 genera were differentially abundant between high and low FCR birds. This information could be used to formulate effective strategies to improve feed efficiency and feed formulation for optimal gut health.  相似文献

In modern dairy cattle breeding, genomic breeding programs have the potential to increase efficiency and genetic gain. At the same time, the requirements and the availability of genotypes and phenotypes present a challenge. The set-up of a large enough reference population for genomic prediction is problematic for numerically small breeds but also for hard to measure traits. The first part of this study is a review of the current literature on strategies to overcome the lack of reference data. One solution is the use of combined reference populations from different breeds, different countries, or different research populations. Results reveal that the level of relationship between the merged populations is the most important factor. Compiling closely related populations facilitates the accurate estimation of marker effects and thus results in high accuracies of genomic prediction. Consequently, mixed reference populations of the same breed, but from different countries are more promising than combining different breeds, especially if those are more distantly related. The use of female reference information has the potential to enlarge the reference population size. Including females is advisable for small populations and difficult traits, and maybe combined with genotyping females and imputing those that are un-genotyped.The efficient use of imputation for un-genotyped individuals requires a set of genotyped related animals and well-considered selection strategies which animals to choose for genotyping and phenotyping. Small populations have to find ways to derive additional advantages from the cost-intensive establishment of genomic breeding schemes. Possible solutions may be the use of genomic information for inbreeding control, parentage verification, within-herd selection, adjusted mating plans or conservation strategies. The second part of the paper deals with the issue of high-quality phenotypes against the background of new, difficult and hard to measure traits. The use of contracted herds for phenotyping is recommended, as additional traits, when compared to standard traits used in dairy cattle breeding can be measured at set moments in time. This can be undertaken even for the recording of health traits, thus resulting in complete contemporary groups for health traits. Future traits to be recorded and used in genomic breeding programs, at least partly will be traits for which traditional selection based on widespread phenotyping is not possible. Enabling phenotyping of sufficient numbers to enable genomic selection will rely on cooperation between scientists from different disciplines and may require multidisciplinary approaches.  相似文献

The partition of the total genetic variance into its additive and non-additive components can differ from trait to trait, and between purebred and crossbred populations. A quantification of these genetic variance components will determine the extent to which it would be of interest to account for dominance in genomic evaluations or to establish mate allocation strategies along different populations and traits. This study aims at assessing the contribution of the additive and dominance genomic variances to the phenotype expression of several purebred Piétrain and crossbred (Piétrain × Large White) pig performances. A total of 636 purebred and 720 crossbred male piglets were phenotyped for 22 traits that can be classified into six groups of traits: growth rate and feed efficiency, carcass composition, meat quality, behaviour, boar taint and puberty. Additive and dominance variances estimated in univariate genotypic models, including additive and dominance genotypic effects, and a genomic inbreeding covariate allowed to retrieve the additive and dominance single nucleotide polymorphism variances for purebred and crossbred performances. These estimated variances were used, together with the allelic frequencies of the parental populations, to obtain additive and dominance variances in terms of genetic breeding values and dominance deviations. Estimates of the Piétrain and Large White allelic contributions to the crossbred variance were of about the same magnitude in all the traits. Estimates of additive genetic variances were similar regardless of the inclusion of dominance. Some traits showed relevant amount of dominance genetic variance with respect to phenotypic variance in both populations (i.e. growth rate 8%, feed conversion ratio 9% to 12%, backfat thickness 14% to 12%, purebreds-crossbreds). Other traits showed higher amount in crossbreds (i.e. ham cut 8% to 13%, loin 7% to 16%, pH semimembranosus 13% to 18%, pH longissimus dorsi 9% to 14%, androstenone 5% to 13% and estradiol 6% to 11%, purebreds-crossbreds). It was not encountered a clear common pattern of dominance expression between groups of analysed traits and between populations. These estimates give initial hints regarding which traits could benefit from accounting for dominance for example to improve genomic estimated breeding value accuracy in genetic evaluations or to boost the total genetic value of progeny by means of assortative mating.  相似文献

Large genetic improvements in the quantitative traits of growth, production, and efficiency of farmed livestock have been made over recent decades, and by introduction of genomic technology these are being enhanced. Such continued improvement requires that there be available variation to utilize. The evidence is that little variation has been lost and such rates are indeed sustainable in the future.SINCE GENETICS was founded we have seen an enormous increase in productivity of livestock for food production. Much of that is due to rapid genetic improvement in the past 60 years of quantitative traits such as growth rate, reproductive rate, and feed conversion efficiency. The improvement has been due to selection, recently mainly within populations, and has continued at similar rates for many livestock generations. I consider whether these rates, which depend on a continuing supply of useful genetic variation, can be maintained or indeed enhanced. Chickens provide my main source of examples as they have been under very strong selection pressure for many decades in the developed world and there is well-documented evidence of their genetic improvement, but the principles are not species-dependent. Further background on animal breeding history, quantitative genetics theory, results, and references are given elsewhere by me (Hill 2010, 2014; Hill et al. 2016) and of course by many others.  相似文献

Fresh and processed poultry have been frequently implicated in cases of human salmonellosis. Furthermore, increased consumption of meat and poultry has increased the potential for exposure to Salmonella enterica. While advances have been made in reducing the prevalence and frequency of Salmonella contamination in processed poultry, there is mounting pressure on commercial growers to prevent and/or eliminate these human pathogens in preharvest production facilities. Several factors contribute to Salmonella colonization in commercial poultry, including the serovar and the infectious dose. In the early 1900s, Salmonella enterica serovars Pullorum and Gallinarum caused widespread diseases in poultry, but vaccination and other voluntary programs helped eradicate pullorum disease and fowl typhoid from commercial flocks. However, the niche created by the eradication of these serovars was likely filled by S. Enteritidis, which proliferated in the bird populations. While this pathogen remains a significant problem in commercial egg and poultry production, its prevalence among poultry has been declining since the 1990s. Coinciding with the decrease of S. Enteritidis, S. Heidelberg and S. Kentucky have emerged as the predominant serovars in commercial broilers. In this review, we have highlighted bacterial genetic and host-related factors that may contribute to such shifts in Salmonella populations in commercial poultry and intervention strategies that could limit their colonization.  相似文献

The difficulties and costs of measuring individual feed intake in dairy cattle are the primary factors limiting the genetic study of feed intake and utilisation, and hence the potential of their subsequent industry-wide applications. However, indirect selection based on heritable, easily measurable, and genetically correlated traits, such as conformation traits, may be an alternative approach to improve feed efficiency. The aim of this study was to estimate genetic and phenotypic correlations among feed intake, production, and feed efficiency traits (particularly residual feed intake; RFI) with routinely recorded conformation traits. A total of 496 repeated records from 260 Holstein dairy cows in different lactations (260, 159 and 77 from first, second and third lactation, respectively) were considered in this study. Individual daily feed intake and monthly BW and body condition scores of these animals were recorded from 5 to 305 days in milk within each lactation from June 2007 to July 2013. Milk yield and composition data of all animals within each lactation were retrieved, and the first lactation conformation traits for primiparous animals were extracted from databases. Individual RFI over 301 days was estimated using linear regression of total 301 days actual energy intake on a total of 301 days estimated traits of metabolic BW, milk production energy requirement, and empty BW change. Pair-wise bivariate animal models were used to estimate genetic and phenotypic parameters among the studied traits. Estimated heritabilities of total intake and production traits ranged from 0.27±0.07 for lactation actual energy intake to 0.45±0.08 for average body condition score over 301 days of the lactation period. RFI showed a moderate heritability estimate (0.20±0.03) and non-significant phenotypic and genetic correlations with lactation 3.5 % fat-corrected milk and average BW over lactation. Among the conformation traits, dairy strength, stature, rear attachment width, chest width and pin width had significant (P<0.05) moderate to strong genetic correlations with RFI. Combinations of these conformation traits could be used as RFI indicators in the dairy genetic improvement programmes to increase the accuracy of the genetic evaluation of feed intake and utilisation included in the index.  相似文献

Feed efficiency traits (FETs) are important economic indicators in poultry production. Because feed intake (FI) is a time-dependent variable, longitudinal models can provide insights into the genetic basis of FET variation over time. It is expected that the application of longitudinal models as part of genome-wide association (GWA) and genomic selection (i.e. genome-wide selection (GS)) studies will lead to an increase in accuracy of selection. Thus, the objectives of this study were to evaluate the accuracy of estimated breeding values (EBVs) based on pedigree as well as high-density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotypes, and to conduct a GWA study on longitudinal FI and residual feed intake (RFI) in a total of 312 chickens with phenotype and genotype in the F2 population. The GWA and GS studies reported in this paper were conducted using β-spline random regression models for FI and RFI traits in a chicken F2 population, with FI and BW recorded for each bird weekly between 2 and 10 weeks of age. A single SNP regression approach was used on spline coefficients for weekly FI and RFI traits, with results showing that two significant SNPs for FI occur in the synuclein (SNCAIP) gene. Results also show that these regions are significantly associated with the spline coefficients (q2) for 5- and 6-week-old birds, while GWA study results showed no SNP association with RFI in F2 chickens. Estimated breeding value predictions obtained using a pedigree-based best linear unbiased prediction (ABLUP) model were then compared with predictions based on genomic best linear unbiased prediction (GBLUP). The accuracy was measured as correlation between genomic EBV and EBV with the phenotypic value corrected for fixed effects divided by the square root of heritability. The regression of observed on predicted values was used to estimate bias of methods. Results show that prediction accuracies using GBLUP and ABLUP for the FI measured from 2nd to 10th week were between 0.06 and 0.46 and 0.03 and 0.37, respectively. These results demonstrate that genomic methods are able to increase the accuracy of predicted breeding values at later ages on the basis of both traits, and indicate that use of a longitudinal model can improve selection accuracy for the trajectory of traits in F2 chickens when compared with conventional methods.  相似文献

Genetic improvement of livestock is a particularly effective technology, producing permanent and cumulative changes in performance. This paper highlights some of the options for including mitigation in livestock breeding schemes, focusing on ruminant species, and details three routes through which genetic improvement can help to reduce emissions per kg product via: (i) improving productivity and efficiency, (ii) reducing wastage in the farming system and (iii) directly selecting on emissions, if or when these are measurable. Selecting on traits that improve the efficiency of the system (e.g. residual feed intake, longevity) will have a favourable effect on the overall emissions from the system. Specific examples of how genetic selection will have a favourable effect on emissions for UK dairy systems are described. The development of breeding schemes that incorporate environmental concerns is both desirable and possible. An example of how economic valuation of public good outcomes can be incorporated into UK dairy selection indices is given. This paper focuses on genetic selection tools using, on the whole, currently available traits and tools. However, new direct and indirect measurement techniques for emissions will improve the potential to reduce emissions by genetic selection. The complexities of global forces on defining selection objectives are also highlighted.  相似文献

Breeding for immune responsiveness and disease resistance   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Animal production efficiency, and product volume and quality can be greatly increased by reducing disease losses. Genetic variation, a prerequisite for successful selection, has been found in animals and poultry exposed to a variety of viral, bacterial and parasitic infections. Breeding for disease resistance can play a significant role alone or in combination with other control measures including disease eradication, vaccination and medication. Feasibility of simultaneously improving resistance to specific diseases and production traits has been demonstrated. However, selection for specific resistance to all diseases of animals and poultry is impossible. Development of general disease resistance through indirect selection primarily on immune response traits may be the best long-term strategy but its applicability is presently limited by insufficient understanding of resistance mechanisms. Another hindrance may be negative genetic correlations among various immune response functions: phagocytosis, cell mediated and humoral immunity. To better assess the feasibility of increasing general disease resistance by indirect selection we must obtain estimates of heritability for immune response, disease resistance, and economic production traits, as well as genetic correlations among these traits. The present level of disease resistance in farm animals resulted from natural selection and from correlated responses to selection for production traits while the influence of artificial selection for resistance was minimal. Future research should be directed towards developing and applying breeding techniques that will increase resistance to diseases without compromising production efficiency and product quality. This will require cooperation of immunogeneticists, veterinarians and animal and poultry breeders. Significant progress in the improvement of resistance to diseases may result from the application of new techniques of molecular genetics and cell manipulation.  相似文献

Vitamins play an essential role in broiler nutrition. They are fundamental for normal metabolic and physiological process, and their requirements for poultry are not fixed and can be affected by multiple factors. In contrast, mycotoxins are a challenging issue because they hinder performance and the immune system. Vitamin supplementation above minimum requirements would permit improvement in productive potential, health, bone and meat quality in a situation of mycotoxin challenge. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of optimum vitamin nutrition in diets contaminated with aflatoxin in broilers from 1 to 44 days of age. A total of 1800 Cobb 500 male chicks were randomized to 15 sets of eight treatment groups, each containing 15 birds using a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial design (commercial vitamin levels and high vitamin levels, two levels of aflatoxin – 0 and 0.5 ppm with binder levels of 0 and 10 000 mg/kg). The mash diets were corn and soybean meal based, formulated according to commercial practices. Feed intake, weight gain and feed conversion were analyzed for birds from 1 to 44 days of age. To determine carcass characteristics (carcass yield, breast yield and leg yield) and black bone syndrome, two birds were slaughtered from each group at 45 days. Other analyses included breast tenderness, water loss by dripping and malonaldehyde concentrations. The results demonstrated that broilers that were fed high levels of vitamins showed better weight gain, feed conversion, carcass yield and breast yield than broilers that were fed diets with commercial vitamin levels (P < 0.05); also, broilers that were fed diets containing 0.5 ppm aflatoxin had lower weight gain, carcass yield and breast yield (P < 0.05). The use of 10 000 mg/kg of binder improved (P < 0.05) feed conversion throughout the rearing period. We conclude that aflatoxin negatively affects performance and carcass yield; however, feeding optimum vitamin nutrition improved these performance traits.  相似文献
