Populations of the land snail Cepaea nemoralis have been investigated at the southern limits of its range in Spain, the Upper Tajo region, in order to analyse the distribution of the species and the variation of polymorphism in relation to environmental conditions. For this purpose two natural subareas, which differ in topography, soil nature, climate and vegetation have been considered. Cepaea nemoralis is confined to the river banks of the area; it is found in open and shaded biotopes of subarea 1 where it is relatively common, and it is almost restricted to shaded biotopes of subarea 2 where it becomes progressively rarer towards the south. Relative abundance of the species may be related to the amount of calcareous soils and climate, the restriction in its southern distribution being probably the result of extreme solar radiation, high temperature and low humidity. The two subareas differ in the frequency of the main polymorphic characters. These differences may be related to the kind of biotope. Subarea 1 richer in more open and exposed biotopes have higher frequencies of yellow, 00000, 00300, and unfused bands, whereas the restriction to poplar groves because of the lack of suitable exposed biotopes in subarea 2 may account for the higher proportion of pink five-bandeds with the bands fused together. This kind of variation with biotope is consistent with an explanation in terms of differences in the temperature absorbance of different morphs and a metabolic response to differences in temperature amplitude of the biotopes. Other characters (lip colour, punctate bands, hyalozonate bands, etc.) are not polymorphic in this region, thus, suggesting that at the periphery environmental conditions are important not only in determining the distribution of the species but exerting a marked effect on the genetic structure of the populations.  相似文献

Cyclamen balearicum is a self-compatible perennial herb endemic to the western Mediterranean Basin. This species occurs in five geographically isolated terrestrial islands in southern France and on four Balearic islands. In this study, we compare genetic variability and differentiation within and among 11 terrestrial island populations and 17 true island populations. Of nine readable enzyme loci, five were polymorphic in both terrestrial and true islands. F statistics showed a significant heterozygote deficiency in all populations, probably due to high levels of autonomous selfing, restricted gene flow, and subsequent genetic drift. Genetic diversity was higher in terrestrial islands than on the Balearic islands, suggesting that the Balearic islands were colonized when they were in contact with the continent. Population differentiation was greater among terrestrial islands (Fst = 0.417 and Gst = 0.344) than among true islands (Fst = 0.112 and Gst = 0.093). Furthermore, differentiation among populations on the Basses Cévennes terrestrial island was greater (Fst = 0.254) than among populations on the true island of Mallorca (Fst = 0.163). The greater genetic differentiation among terrestrial islands could have been caused by genetic bottlenecks associated with changes in climate and human land use that may have reduced population sizes more severely in terrestrial islands in southern France than on the Balearic islands.  相似文献

The infant mortality evolution in the present century has been analyzed in a rural Mediterranean population (La Alpujarra, SE Spain). The “conventional infant mortality rate” shows a decrease from 184.82, in 1900–1904, to 25.16, in 1975–1978. The sexual proportion for all period studied indicates a male supermortality about 1.13. The biometric analysis reveals an excess of exogenous mortality at the first half of the century, attributed to digestive problems, as has been found in other Mediterranean populations. The seasonal distribution presents an evolutionary change from a maximum in estival months to a maximum in winter ones.  相似文献

We present here the results of a first study comparing modern soil phytolith assemblages with pollen and botanical data at a North Mediterranean site. This work has shown the following limitations and advantages of phytolith analysis for the reconstruction of Mediterranean vegetation:(1) Phytoliths are produced in sufficient quantities for analysis and are well preserved in limestone environments, widespread in the Mediterranean area. (2) Young stands of Quercus ilex and Quercus coccifera, widely distributed in the Mediterranean area do not produce characteristic phytolith types in sufficient quantities to allow the calculation of a reliable index of tree cover density. (3) Pine forests, dominated by Pinus halepensis and Pinus sylvestris, are not recorded in the studied phytolith assemblages. (4) Grassland and shrubland assemblages can be distinguished through their associated phytolith assemblages, in particular by the proportion of crenate phytoliths produced in the short cells of the grass epidermis. (5) The different vegetation groups on the massif cannot be distinguished by pollen analysis. Further studies, comparing modern phytolith assemblages and quantitative vegetation data, should be carried out on forest plots that have been established for several centuries to further assess the role of phytolith analysis in vegetation reconstructions in the Mediterranean region.  相似文献

The age and growth of the dusky grouper, Epinephelus marginatus , in the Balearic Islands (western Mediterranean) were studied by otolith analysis from a sample of 358 specimens ranging in total length ( L T) from 6·6 to 105·6 cm. The specimens came from commercial artisanal and recreational spear fisheries between 1999 and 2003. Otoliths grew asymmetrically throughout the range of L T studied, showing a clear pattern of alternating translucent and opaque bands. Marginal increment analysis of specimens up to 8 years-old indicated that a single opaque band was formed each year during spring and summer. Whole otoliths allowed ageing specimens up to 10 years old, but above that age whole otoliths yielded lower age estimates than sectioned otoliths. The maximum estimated age was 61 years, which significantly extends the estimated life span of the species from a maximum of 36 years in a previous study. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters were estimated as L = 95·5 cm L T, K = 0·087 and T O=−1·12. The study revealed differences in mean L T at age and age structure between the shallow- and deep-water samples which may be attributed to different fishing pressure and environmental conditions.  相似文献

Toarcian (Lower Jurassic) argillaceous-marly sediments of southern France (Causses) and east-central Spain (Barranco de la Puta section) were deposited in mid to lower shelf settings. They contain a low to moderately diverse, autochthonous fauna of benthic macroinvertebrates dominated by bivalves and gastropods, in the case of the Causses, and by bivalves and brachiopods in the Barranco de la Puta section. Five benthic associations are recognized at the latter locality and four at the former. In the Causses, low species diversity, evidence of seasonal mass mortality, presence of the opportunistic bivalve Parvamussium pumilum, local dominance of the soft bottom coral Thecocyathus mactrus and the dark-grey, fine-grained sediment point to high rates of sedimentation, high turbidity, intermittently lowered oxygen values and soft to soupy substrate conditions. These factors, together with eutrophic water masses, were the main environmental parameters governing faunal distribution. Soupy substrate conditions are thought to be largely biologically produced by the activity of infaunal depositfeeders, chiefly nuculoid bivalves. In the Barranco de la Puta section, abundant brachiopods, higher carbonate content of the sediment, and evidence of intermittent in-situ reworking and winnowing point to an influence of storm-induced currents, a shallower depositional depth, lower turbidity, a lower rate of sedimentation, and a somewhat firmer substrate. As a consequence, the fauna is largely dominated by epifaunal suspension-feeders. Compared with maximum and average sizes from elsewhere in the Jurassic, most bivalve species are distinctly smaller, a feature interpreted as stunting. Brachiopods, in contrast, reach normal size. The lack of nuculids, scarcity of deposit-feeders in general, and stunting are interpreted as evidence of an oligotrophic environment. Lowered oxygen conditions appear to have played only a very limited role in shaping the distribution pattern. Many of the differences between both areas can be explained by the different trophic regimes that reflect considerably higher run-off and consequently higher input of terrigenous sediment and dissolved nutrients to the basin in the case of the Causses. This in turn is thought to possibly reflect differences in regional climate; humid in southern France and more arid in eastcentral Spain.  相似文献

Wild legumes constitute an important component of widespread pastures in the Mediterranean basin. This region is experiencing remarkable effects from climate change, and continuous monitoring of species and population dynamics is important in order to plan and enact valuable conservation programmes. Tripodion tetraphyllum (L.) Fourr. [=Anthyllis tetraphylla L.] (2n=16), belongs to the tribe Loteae (Fabaceae), and could be very important for soil protection and sward improvement in abandoned or degraded Mediterranean areas. This alternative pasture legume is very closely related to Lotus japonicus and has some important characteristics for survival of the species in difficult and overgrazed Mediterranean areas. In this study, we have investigated the molecular diversity and population structure of T. tetraphyllum from North Africa using ISSR markers and plastidial microsatellites. To date, this is the first study concerning the genetic diversity and geographic differentiation of T. tetraphyllum. Ninety genotypes from three North African countries were analysed according to ISSRs, cpSSRs and one phenotypic trait. T. tetraphyllum shows a clear geographical structure, with differentiation associated with longitudinal differences; moreover, there is a general reduction in genetic diversity from Morocco to Tunisia. With all the markers used, strong differentiation was seen among collection sites. Our data highlight a genetic diversity gradient and cline of distribution, indicating that T. tetraphyllum has extended its area of distribution from Morocco to Tunisia.  相似文献

Anoda cristata is a common weed used for food and medicine in central Mexico where it grows among field crops during the rainy seasons. People prefer robust, tender plants from the agricultural fields because these “develop better.” Hence, the plants are tolerated within the conventional agricultural activities and benefit indirectly from the improvements in the agrohabitat. People do not select individuals with specific morphological characteristics but rather they select for plants at the level of the habitat. This step may precede that of direct management of individual plants. It is possible that these differences in the level of interaction between humans and plants (i.e., within the ruderal and agrestal habitats) may promote morphological and genetic differences over time,

The Mediterranean Basin as one the world's most biologically diverse regions provides an interesting area for the study of plant evolution and spatial structure in plant populations. The dioecious moss Pleurochaete squarrosa is a widespread and common bryophyte in the Mediterranean Basin. Thirty populations were sampled for a study on molecular diversity and genetic structure, covering most major islands and mainland populations from Europe and Africa. A significant decline in nuclear and chloroplast sequence and allozyme variation within populations from west to east was observed. While DNA sequence data showed patterns of isolation by distance, allozyme markers did not. Instead, their considerable interpopulation genetic differentiation appeared to be unrelated to geographic distance. Similar high values for coefficients of gene diversity (G(ST)) in all data sets provided evidence of geographic isolation and limited gene flow among populations (i) within islands, (ii) within mainland areas, and (iii) between islands and mainland. Notably, populations in continental Spain are strongly genetically isolated from all other investigated areas. Surprisingly, there was no difference in gene diversity and G(ST) between islands and mainland areas. Thus, we conclude that large Mediterranean islands may function as 'mainland' for bryophytes. This hypothesis and its implication for conservation biology of cryptogamic plants warrant further investigation. While sexually reproducing populations were found all over the Mediterranean Basin, high levels of multilocus linkage disequilibrium provide evidence of mainly vegetative propagation even in populations where sexual reproduction was observed.  相似文献

A study of the biology of Red Sea — Suez Canal migrant, the lizardfish Saurida undosquamis and the indigenous Synodus saurus was carried out in the Mediterranean coast of Israel. The spawning season of S. undosquamis lasts from March to December indicating a curtailment of the year-round spawning season of the source population in the Gulf of Oman. The spawning season of S. saurus is from February to August. The diameter of ripe oocytes of S. undosquamis is 500–600 μm. Females of S. undosquamis grow slightly faster than males and reach a larger size (340 mm TL versus 280 mm TL). Niche partitioning between the two lizardfishes is primarily on the basis of depth. The invador occupying deeper water. Both species are chiefly piscivorous but as a result of their depth distribution there is little diet overlap on the specific level.  相似文献

The variation and evolution of reproductive traits in island plants have much attention from conservation and evolutionary biologists. However, plants on islands in the Mediterranean region have very little attention. In the present study, we examine the floral biology and mating system of Cyclamen creticum , a diploid perennial herb endemic to Crete and Karpathos. Our purpose is to quantify (1) variation and covariation of floral traits related to the mating system, (2) the ability of the species to self in the absence of pollinators and its relative performance on selfing and outcrossing and (3) generic diversity within and among populations. Pollen/ovule ratios were indicative of a xenogamous species. A controlled pollination experiment showed that the species is self-compatible but is unable to set seed, in the absence of pollinators, probably due to stigma-anther separation. A multiplicative estimate of inbreeding depression based on fruit maturation, seed number and percentage seed germination gave δ= 0.38 Population genetic diversity was high, 54.76% polymorphic loci, a mean of 1.78 alleles per locus and a mean observed heterozygosity of 0.053. F -statistics nevertheless indicated high inbreeding rates (mean F is= 0.748) in natural populations, and low levels of population differentiation (mean Fis= 0.168). C. creticum thus appears to have a mixed-mating system with high levels of (pollinator) mediated inbreeding (either by facilitated selfing, geitonogamy or biparental inbreeding) in natural populations.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine the conservation status of a Salix herbacea L. population, located in the N-Apennines (Italy), toward the southern edge of the species’ distribution. A 3 year-long study (1999–2001) was conducted to evaluate the effects of human trampling on Salix herbacea. Two stands, one trampled and one untrampled in the same site, were compared. The measured variables included: total vegetation cover; cover and female catkin number of Salix herbacea. The trampled stand showed a decrease in both Salix cover and sexual reproduction. We suggest possible conservation strategies to preserve the Salix herbacea trampled stand from its local extinction.  相似文献

The Mediterranean region as a whole has the highest dung beetle species richness within Europe. Natural coastal habitats in this region are among those which have suffered severe human disturbance. We studied dung beetle diversity and distinctiveness within one of the most important coastal protected areas in the west Euro‐Mediterranean region (the regional Park of Camargue, southern France) and made comparisons of dung beetle assemblages with other nearby Mediterranean localities, as well as with other coastal protected area (Doñana National Park, Spain). Our finding showed that: (1) The species richness of coastal habitats in the Camargue is low and only grasslands showed a similar level of species richness and abundance to inland habitats of other Mediterranean localities. The unique habitats of the coastal area (beaches, dunes and marshes) are largely colonized by species widely distributed in the hinterland. (2) In spite of their low general distinctiveness, dune and marsh edges are characterized by the occurrence of two rare, vulnerable, specialized and large roller dung beetle species of the genus Scarabaeus. As with other Mediterranean localities, current findings suggest a recent decline of Scarabaeus populations and the general loss of coastal dung beetle communities in Camargue. (3) The comparison of dung beetle assemblages between the Camargue and Doñana shows that, in spite of the low local dung beetle species richness in the Camargue, the regional dung beetle diversity is similar between both protected areas. Unique historical and geographical factors can explain the convergence in regional diversity as well as the striking divergence in the composition of dung beetle assemblages between both territories.  相似文献

Orophilous taxa of Sideritis sect. Sideritis (Lamiaceae) are rare, although highly diversified in south-eastern Spain. Most of them belong to subsections Hyssopifolia and Fruticulosa and show very reduced distribution areas in the summits of the highest Betic mountains. The inaccessibility of their habitats has meant that many of them have been described only within the last twenty years. In this context, a new species Sideritis tugiensis is described in subsection Hyssopifolia , from the Oromediterranean summits of Sierra de Segura (south-eastern Spain). It is a woody, cushion-shaped plant, resembling both S. carbonellis Socorro (subsect. Hyssopifolia) and S. glacialis Boiss., s.l. (subsect. Fruticulosa) , though important morphological divergences warrant recognition at species rank. Data on morphology, ecology and chorology of the new species are reported, and affinities and differences with regard to close taxa from other subsections are presented. Evolutionary trends in the whole aggregate are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Morpho-colorimetric quantitative variables describing seed size, shape, colour and texture were analysed using image analysis techniques, in order to evaluate the variability among Medicago taxa sect. Dendrotelis and verify the current taxonomic treatment which divides this section into three species: M. arborea L., M. citrina (Font Quer) Greuter and M. strasseri Greuter, Matthäs & H. Risse. Further comparisons were conducted to discriminate among populations and regions of provenance. Data obtained were statistically analysed applying stepwise Linear Discriminant Analysis method (LDA), recording an overall cross-validated classification performance of 100% at species level. With regard to inter-population comparisons, percentages of correct discrimination above 98% were achieved and high performance was recorded in the discrimination among M. arborea taxa distinguished by region of provenance. For each of these statistical comparisons, the best discriminant variables chosen by the stepwise LDA were related to colour and textural information. Finally, the obtained results confirmed the validity of the proposed method to be highly diagnostic in the statistical assessment of the morpho-colorimetric traits variability of Medicago taxa seeds, both for the taxonomic differentiation at species level and regional and population groups.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to give results about position of Lamyropsis microcephala within an already existing phylogeny of Lamyropsis genus on the Mediterranean area, by analyzing external transcribed spacer/internal transcribed spacer sequence data. The four Lamyropsis species considered in the model can be recognized as distinct taxa originated from successive migration/speciation events.  相似文献

The zonation of polychaetes down a vertical cliff (0–5 m in depth) at Cape Romito, Leghorn, Italy, was investigated. The structural organization of the community changed with depth. A community typical of photophilic environments was found in the superficial zone (0–2 m), while in the deeper zone (3–5 m), a more diversified community characterized by species typical of sciaphilic environments was present. At the surface (0 m) the community was very poor in species and individuals and thus probably corresponds to the midlittoral fringe. In fact, some species typical of the midlittoral zone were found. This distribution pattern was constant for samples taken in February and August 1985. The distribution of polychaetes was closely related to that found for macroalgae. It is hypothesized that algae condition the substratum and that this is the main factor responsible for the zonation of polychaetes.  相似文献
