The life-histories of four enchytraeid worms, Lumbricillus rivalis, Enchy-traeus coronatus, E. buchholzi, and E. albidus which occur in sewage percolating filters, were studied under laboratory conditions at 8 , 15 and 20°C. The number of ova per cocoon varied from 0 to 50 (L. rivalis), 0 to 33 (E. coronatus), 1 to 9 (E. buchholzi) and 0 to 22 (E. albidus). The mean number of ova per cocoon was highest at 15°C for all species except E. coronatus which had a highest mean value at 8°C. The number of ova in cocoons was correlated with cocoon length (P < 0.001) for all species. Cocoon production usually increased with temperature ranging from 0.8 cocoons per adult per week at 8°C to 2.0 at 20°C for L. rivalis, and from 1–4 to about 2.6 for E. coronatus and E. buchholzi. The total number of ova produced by each E. coronatus (350 at 8°C to 550 at 20°C) was similar to that produced by each L. rivalis (600 at 8°C to 350 at 20°C) and was about five times greater than the total numbers produced by the other two species. Cocoon and ova production and the number of ova per cocoon varied with the age of the adult, usually reaching a peak soon after maturity. Hatching success was low and generally 40–50 % of ova failed to develop; subsequent mortality among immature worms was about 10–20%. Growth was more rapid at the higher temperatures; L. rivalis matured in about 26 days at 20°C, the clitellum forming when the worm was 13–14 mm long; data for the other species are 13 days and 5–6 mm (E. coronatus); 16 days and 3–4 mm (E. buchholzi); 28 days and 13–14 mm (E. albidus). The maturation period at 8°C was at least twice that at 20°C. The generation period (cocoon to cocoon) was about a month at 20°C for all species except E. albidus (2 months), but as some species had longer reproductive periods than others the actual number of generations per year was highest in E. buchholzi, 7.0 per year, and lowest in E. albidus, about 3.3 per year, At 8°C all four species had between 1.4 and 2.8 generations a year. A comparison of expected and observed population densities of L. rivalis and E. coronatus in a sewage percolating filter showed that neither achieved values approaching their potential summer densities although ample food was apparently available. Of the four species studied only E. buchholzi produced viable ova without pairing.  相似文献

Abstract. Life-history attributes and the reproductive biology of Enchytraeus coronatus (Oligochaeta, Enchytraeidae) were studied in agar cultures, as a basis for using this species in toxicity tests and other experimental studies. The use of agar allows daily examination of the behavior, reproduction, and mortality of the worms. At 20°C, E. coronatus had a generation time of 21–22 days and an embryonic period of 7–10 days. Hatch rate was high (>80%) and worms became sexually mature 8–10 days after hatching. Cocoon production and number of eggs per cocoon were positively correlated. Mortality in the first stages of the life cycle (embryonic period and first week after hatching) was about 38%. Three different periods of cocoon production were distinguished: a period characterized by a regular increase in the number of cocoons produced (weeks 4–9), a period of production at a constant high rate of ∼5 cocoons per week (weeks 10–20), and a period of decline in production rate (weeks 21–32), down to a mean value of 1.6 cocoons per adult in the last week. This study showed that synchronized agar cultures of cohorts can provide adults for long-term experimental tests, with the age for optimum reproduction being 8–20 weeks.  相似文献

Summary The abilities of the cocoons of the spiders Mecynogea lemniscata and Argiope aurantia to protect the enclosed egg and spiderling stages from desiccation were investigated in the laboratory under controlled humidities, and in the field under ambient conditions. For M. lemniscata, which has a relatively small clutch (8–30 eggs) and remains in the cocoon for approximately 9–10 months, removal of the cocoon had no effect on water loss from the egg stage, nor did it adversely affect hatching or molting success. Cocoon removal did, however, significantly affect water loss and, consequently, survival in the spiderling stage at all humidities in the laboratory and in the field. The importance of the cocoon for survival is probably related to the unusually long time M. lemniscata spiderlings spend in the cocoon overwintering. For A. aurantia, which has a substantially larger clutch size (300–1400 eggs) and remains in the cocoon for a shorter 6–7 months, cocoon removal had no effect on water loss, egg hatching success, molting success, nor spiderling survival. The lack of an effect suggests that other factors (e.g., relative humidity at the oviposition site, or a large clutch size) may be more important in controlling water loss for A. aurantia.  相似文献

In simultaneous hermaphrodites with reciprocal mating, multiple mating may be a male strategy that conflicts with female interests, and therefore an intra‐individual sexual conflict regarding the number of matings may be expected. The evolutionary outcome of this sexual conflict will depend on the costs and benefits that extra mating entails for each sexual function. In the present study, we investigated the costs and benefits of multiple mating on cocoon number, cocoon mass, and cocoon hatching success in the redworm Eisenia andrei, a simultaneous hermaphrodite with reciprocal insemination, by manipulating the number of matings with different partners. We did not detect any reduction in the female reproductive output (number and mass of cocoons) with increasing number of mating partners. However, we found that multiple mating showed benefits for female reproduction that increased the hatching success of the cocoons. This effect may be a result of increased quantity and/or diversity of sperm in the spermathecae of multiple mated earthworms. Oak-silkworms (Anthereae pernyi) were reared from hatching to the adult stage on a diet consisting of powder of dry leaves of oak trees (Quercus dentata T.), ‘kinako’ (powder of parched soy bean), sucrose, agar-agar, sodium dehydroacetate as an antiseptic, and water. Among 100 newly hatched oak-silkworms reared on the diet, 23 spun their cocoons. The weight of the cocoon fibres spun by one worm and the number of the eggs laid down by one moth were 0.34 g and 203, respectively, on the average.  相似文献

The currrent California condor (Gymnogyps californianus) recovery plan entails increasing the reproductive rate via replacement-clutch manipulation of eggs. During the period from 1983 to 1985, 15 eggs were removed from wild nesting pairs for artificial incubation. The eggs were incubated at a dry bulb temperature of 36.4°C in modified forced-air Lyon Electric incubators. The incubation humidity was adjusted for individual eggs based on weight loss data (water = weight), 25.6–30.0°C wet bulb (41.0–63.0% Relative Humidity (RH)). The chicks were hatched initially under forced-air conditions of 36.1°C dry bulb, 31.1–01.7°C wet bulb (70.0–73.0% RH). In 1984, hatching parameters were changed to still-air conditions, 36.1°C dry bulb (top of the egg), 35.0°C dry bulb (bottom of the egg), 31.1–31.7°C wet bulb (70.0-73.0% RH). Tactile and auditory stimulation was utilized during the pip-to-hatch interval. From among 15 eggs collected, 13 hatched, and 12 condor chicks were raised successfully (hatchability: 86.7%; survivability: 92.3%).  相似文献

In animals in which the two sexes invest relatively similar amounts of resources in their young, the number of mates is expected to affect male and female reproductive success similarly and gender conflicts on the number of mates may not arise. Correspondingly, in non-selfing, simultaneous hermaphrodites with long-term monogamy, the two partners are expected to alternate repeatedly their sexual roles and invest similarly in their offspring. Therefore, the gender conflict on the number of mating partners should not arise. However, when >2 conspecifics are present, hermaphrodites are known to plastically adjust their behavior and sex allocation and compete for mating repeatedly in the male role. We tested whether this leads to multiple paternities of single egg clutches in experimental replicates of small and large groups of non-selfing, egg-trading, behaviorally monogamous polychaete worms (Ophryotrocha diadema) by using neutral genetic markers to estimate paternity. Multiply fertilized egg cocoons were common in these worms; two or more individuals succeeded in fertilizing the same egg cocoon and mate competition increased with group size. Multiply fertilized egg cocoons had a higher proportion of eggs developing into mature worms than singly fertilized egg cocoons. Possibly singly fertilized cocoons had a lower fertilization rate owing to low sperm counts and aflagellate sperm.  相似文献

Observations on the hatching of winter eggs of Panonychus ulmi (Koch) from apple orchards in England over the 5 years 1962-6 are described. Differences of 2–3 weeks between orchards in the date at which 50% hatch was reached were quite common and this was out of step with petal fall in the majority of orchards. There was a continuous range between early and late hatching populations and a tendency for the populations to hatch in the same order every year. In 1966 populations on Cox's Orange Pippin hatched earlier than those on Worcester Pearmain but the difference was unlikely to be of practical importance. Neither recording accumulated day degrees for populations hatched out-of-doors nor hatching in an incubator after chilling was considered to give a sufficiently reliable forecast of 50% hatch but observations in 1966 suggested that this might be predicted from the total eggs hatched in an incubator expressed as a percentage of total healthy eggs.  相似文献

The Danube Delta is one of the widest wetland systems in Europe and Lake Isacova is one of the biggest lakes in the Delta. The oligochaete community in the Lake comprised 52% of the total benthic fauna and Potamothrix hammoniensis (Michaelsen, 1901) (Tubificidae, Oligochaeta) represented more than 90% of the oligochaetes sampled. During September 1991 – August 1994, the proportion of ovigerous individuals of P. hammoniensis represented less than 20% of the total population, with localised differences in the Lake occurring over time. Breeding and cocoon production in the study period started in March of the year, when the water temperature was about 7 °C, and lasted until May 1992 and June 1993, respectively. The newly hatched individuals reached the highest proportion in May. Although large individuals were found again by the end of September (1991) and the beginning of October (1993), no spermatozeugmata in their spermathecae or cocoons were observed during November and October, respectively. Member of this cohort bred and started cocoon deposition during the following spring, after about 11 months of maturation (from April to March). A second, less intensive period of breeding was recorded during August 1992 and this lasted until the beginning of September 1993. However, cocoons from this latter period did not show embryonic growth and hatching until the autumn floods bring oxygenated water to the bottom level. This resulted in a period of rapid development followed by the mass hatching of cocoons. These specimens needed a maximum of 9 month (from October to July) to reach sexual maturity.  相似文献

To examine how dormancy contributes to the establishment and persistence of Bythotrephes longimanus, we investigated resting egg production and hatching in relation to the demography of the planktonic stage and environmental conditions in Island Lake Reservoir (USA). During a 3-year study, the largest contribution to the egg bank occurred in autumn and most eggs hatched in spring, but we also detected some resting egg production and hatching in summer. The difference between summer and late autumn densities of eggs in sediments averaged 47% (range 0–98%) for 18 sites throughout the reservoir, which was similar to experimental estimates of in situ hatching fraction of 67% for eggs in the spring and summer following their production. Based on emergence traps, neonates hatch in the field during May and June. We estimated mortality rates of 64% for resting eggs and embryos, and 59% for newly emerged neonates. Although hatching fraction saturated at the same level, eggs incubated offshore hatched later than those nearshore where water temperature was warmer and light was detectable at the sediment surface. Low dissolved oxygen concentration did not significantly reduce hatching fraction but resulted in some eggs that initiated development but failed to hatch. Collectively, our results demonstrate substantial annual turnover in the resting egg bank of B. longimanus and high mortality of resting eggs during recruitment from the egg to the first molt of the planktonic stage. These patterns suggest that propagule pressure in the form of resting eggs requires large numbers for establishment, and that considerable post-establishment resting egg production is necessary for inter-annual persistence.  相似文献

Of 444 compounds tested for their ability to stimulate eggs of Heterodera rostochiensis to hatch, forty-five did so to varying extents. Many compounds that hatched H. schachtii Schm. eggs did not hatch H. rostochiensis eggs. The most effective compounds with H. rostochiensis were picrolonic acid, anhydro-tetronic acid and vanadates. Tests with analogues of picrolonic and anhydro-tetronic acids suggested some structures that may be concerned in hatching H. rostochiensis and H. schachtii. The simple analogues hatched the eggs of H. schachtii but not those of H. rostochiensis. Suitably placed polarisable atoms seemed to be an essential feature. Picrolonic acid contains pairs of polarizable atoms, about 4 and 6·7 Å apart, that may respectively be associated with the hatching of H. schachtii and H. rostochiensis. Other features of the more active hatching agents were a cis and co-planar arrangement of the two polarizable atoms with respect to the rest of the molecule. The life-cycle, growth, and reproductive success of a stream-dwelling Erpobdella octoculata (L.) were studied over a 19-month period at two sites, one above and one below an input of zinc pollution from mine-waste. Samples were collected monthly using quadrats. The blotted wet weight of all leeches was measured. An histological technique was employed to determine sexual maturity. Reproductive success was measured by estimating the numbers of cocoons and number of eggs per cocoon at each site. A wet ashing technique, followed by analysis using flame atomic absorption spectrometry, was used to determine the extent of bioaccumulation of zinc. Total zinc and other metals in the waters were similarly analysed.Differences were found between the populations at the two sites. The life-history of the Erpobdella above the contamination was comparable to that found for other stream-dwelling populations previously studied. Observed differences in densities of leeches between sites in the present and in previous studies by other workers may be due to recorded differences in the abundance of available food. At the polluted site, there was evidence that (a) there was a delay in cocoon deposition and hence hatching of young, (b) the adult leeches produced more misshapened and empty cocoons, (c) no relationship existed between the area of cocoons with eggs and number of eggs present, and (d) the proportion of young to adult leech was smaller at the polluted site. At the polluted site, higher levels of zinc were recorded in the tissues of Erpobdella and there was some evidence for the active intake of zinc by the leech.  相似文献

In temperate regions, populations of Aedes aegypti survive the cold season in the egg stage. In the present work, we studied the cold‐season mortality of Ae. aegypti eggs and their subsequent hatching pattern in Buenos Aires city. Eggs were exposed during the winter season (three months) in three neighborhoods located along a gradient of distance toward the Río de la Plata River, coincident with a gradient of activity of Ae. aegypti. Results showed mortalities lower (30.6%) than those from tropical regions during the dry season. Significant differences were detected among the egg mortalities of each site with a maximum value at the site nearest the Río de la Plata River (50%), and a minimum value at the most continental site (9%). Post‐experimental hatching response of eggs differed between sites, with the highest proportion of hatched eggs during the first immersion in the site nearest to the river and the lowest proportion in the most continental site. The hatching proportion also differed between age classes, with older (early‐laid) eggs hatching later than new (late‐laid) ones. Our results provide the first information of Ae. aegypti egg mortality in temperate South America and support the hypothesis that differences in egg mortality are associated with abundance patterns of Ae. aegypti in Buenos Aires city.  相似文献

1. Cyclical parthenogens, organisms switching between sexual and asexual mode of reproduction, are common in aquatic habitats. In permanent waterbodies with year‐round persistence of populations, the relevance of sexually produced resting eggs for population dynamics and structure is still largely unexplored. 2. The aim of this study was to investigate the importance of recruitment from resting eggs to Daphnia spp. in a deep dimictic reservoir with overwintering populations (Saidenbach Reservoir, Germany). We linked field studies on Daphnia population dynamics, hatching rates and diapausing egg abundances in the sediment with allozyme analysis of the genetic variability of both the pelagic population and hatchlings from resting eggs. 3. We found higher hatching rates at intermediate depths (10–18 m), although highest diapausing egg abundances were found in the deeper parts of the reservoir. From the extensive field data, we calculated a population budget for the main basin of the reservoir, which showed that hatched daphnids accounted for <1% of the total abundance and explained only a tiny fraction of population growth. 4. The genetic composition (MultiLocus Genotypes, MLG) of the pelagic population was relatively stable throughout the stratified period with up to five among 39 detected MLGs attaining frequencies >5% per date. From 11 MLGs differentiated among hatched daphnids, three were recovered in the pelagic population in perceptible, albeit low frequencies (1–4%). 5. We conclude that the contribution of hatched animals to the spring population dynamics is negligible in situations with an overwintering population present and will only become relevant if densities are extremely low. In this type of system, the significance of the resting egg bank is presumably mainly related to the maintenance of genetic diversity.  相似文献

The mechanisms controlling egg diapause and circadian rhythms of hatching activity have been extensively studied in insects. However, relatively little attention has been paid to the mechanisms controlling synchronized hatching from an egg mass. In this study, we examined the possible involvement of embryo–embryo interaction in controlling hatching time in Halyomorpha halys (Stål). Eggs tended to hatch earlier as the egg mass size increased. Egg separation and clumping of separated eggs at various times showed that hatching synchrony was largely determined shortly before hatching. However, whether eggs were kept in a mass or separated until several hours before hatching also influenced the hatching time, indicating the presence of embryo–embryo interactions. Eggs derived from different masses and kept in physical contact with one another hatched synchronously if their ages were within approximately 8 h. In this case, both younger and older eggs advanced only in hatching time, in contrast to a case of locusts reported by others. Eggs separated by more than 7 mm hatched as synchronously as those kept in a mass when glued to the same substrate, suggesting an important role of the egg substrate in transmitting the vibrational hatching signals to neighboring sibling eggs to synchronize hatching.  相似文献

Spawning performance of pinfish Lagodon rhomboides without use of hormonal aids was monitored over an extended season. Nearly three million eggs were obtained from 75 spawns collected over a 90‐day consecutive period from a single population of four brood fish (1M:1F). A mean ± s.d. batch fecundity of 30·27 ± 22·64 eggs g?1 female was estimated with 98·0 ± 0·06% of the batch composed of floating eggs which were 1·04 ± 0·04 mm in diameter and 85·71 ± 27·59% fertile. Floating eggs successfully hatched 54·65 ± 29·13% of the time which yielded larvae that were 2·59 ± 0·24 mm in length. Fatty acids within floating eggs were largely represented by polyunsaturated fatty acids (45·30 ± 2·14% of total fatty acids) of which linoleic acid [(c18:2n‐6cis) 3·49 ± 1·69% trifluoroacetic acid (TFA)] and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) [(c22:6n‐3) 28·47 ± 1·48% TFA] represented the majority of fatty acids for n‐6 and n‐3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, respectively. The strongest correlations between fatty acids and hatching success and larval survival to first feeding were observed for the DHA:EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid; c20:5n‐3) ratio and total n‐6 polyunsaturated fatty‐acids levels, respectively. These data demonstrate potential for producers to rely on natural spawns for extensive egg production and provide a baseline for future development of natural spawning protocols of captive L. rhomboides.  相似文献

Limnodrilus claparedeanus with its high productivity is the most numerous tubificid species in the Tsimlyansk Reservoir. As a result of frequent reproduction, young worms are abundant in the population. Individuals mature in a short time and are able to lay cocoons nine weeks after hatching. The number of embryos in the cocoons varies from one to twenty-six, thirteen being most frequent. The young worms mature rapidly and early reproduction results in an increase in the population in autumn.  相似文献

黄褐新圆蛛在湖北省以初孵幼虫在卵袋内越冬,一年可完成三个世代。雌蛛交配一次可终生产受精卵,一生最多可产9个卵袋。每个卵袋含卵粒数一般为80—90粒,单雌产卵量平均在450粒以上,最多可产869粒。卵的孵化率在90%以上。 成蛛的寿命较长,温度和食物对寿命有较大影响;有较强的耐饥能力。 在棉田内以结网捕食害虫,可捕食棉铃虫、红铃虫、棉小造桥虫、小地老虎、棉二点叶蝉、棉大卷叶螟和大青叶蝉等害虫。  相似文献

Flock breeders of black‐bellied sandgrouse originated from wild‐laid eggs collected in west central Morocco in 2003 and 2004, were hatched, and hand‐reared in captivity in the framework of a reinforcement population program. Three to five pairs of different ages were housed in an aviary. Egg‐pulling procedure was used and eggs incubated artificially. Breeding parameters, hatchability, and posthatching mortality were recorded. The black‐bellied sandgrouse showed a seasonal breeding pattern with a laying period extending from 7 to12 weeks. The clutch frequency varied from 3 to 7 clutches per female per season. The mean clutch size was 2.66±0.47 eggs, and the mean interclutch interval was 10±2.7 days. The average total egg production was 12±5.83 eggs per female varying with age from 8 to18 eggs per female. Egg hatchability of incubated eggs increased with age and varied from 37.5 to 72.2%. Chick mortality occurred only in the first week after hatching, averaging 60.5%. The obtained results showed that black‐bellied sandgrouse can be successfully bred in captivity and opened the possibility of controlling, managing, and maximizing their production for the reinforcement of the local declining wild populations.
