The prediction of ovulation time is one of the most important and yet difficult processes in pig production, and it has a considerable impact on the fertility of the herd and litter size. The objective of this study was to assess the vulvar skin temperature of sows during proestrus and estrus using infrared thermography and to establish a possible relationship between the variations in vulvar temperature and ovulation. The experimental group comprised 36 crossbred Large White × Landrace females, of which 6 were gilts and 30 were multiparous sows. Estrus was detected twice daily and the temperature was obtained every 6 hours from the vulvar area and from two control points in the gluteal area (Gluteal skin temperature [GST]). A third variable, vulvar–gluteal temperature (VGT) was obtained from the difference between the vulvar skin temperature and the GST values. The animals were divided into two subgroups: group A consisting of 11 animals with estrus detected at 6:00 AM, Day 4 postweaning, and group B comprising seven animals with estrus detected at 6:00 AM, Day 5 post-weaning. Both groups showed a similar trend in the VGT. The VGT increased during the proestrus, reaching a peak 24 hours before estrus in group A and 48 hours before estrus in group B. The VGT then decreased markedly reaching the lowest value in groups A and B, respectively, 12 and 6 hours after estrus. Although the time of ovulation was only estimated on the basis of a literature review, the matching between the temporal variations of the VGT values and the predicted time of the peak of estradiol secretion that ultimately leads to the ovulation processes suggests that the VGT values represent a potential predictive marker of the ovulatory events. 相似文献

The objective of the present research was to eliminate seasonal fluctuations in year-round reproductive performance of sows and to improve litter parameters by administration of oxytocin into liquid semen insemination doses. A 2-year experiment was performed on crossbreed sows, Polish Large White × Polish Landrace, which were partitioned into two groups: control, insemination without any modification with 100 mL semen doses and oxytocin, insemination with 100 mL semen doses to which 5 IU of oxytocin was added just before insemination. A total of 10,486 inseminations were made. The farrowing rate and obtained litter parameters, including the effect of season, were analyzed. For each litter, the following factors were defined: average litter size, percentage of fetal death and mummified piglets, average piglet birth weight, percentage of piglet mortality, fecundity index, average number of piglets weaned, weaned piglet weight, and daily gain. Sows presented a positive reaction to the experimental factor. A statistically higher farrowing rate for oxytocin group in summer and autumn seasons was confirmed (P ≤ 0.01). Regardless of the season, a higher average litter size was observed in the oxytocin group with the most evident differences for winter, spring (P ≤ 0.01), and summer (P ≤ 0.05). The effect of oxytocin on the percentage of fetal death and mummified piglets born was not confirmed statistically except for winter. Analyzing the fecundity index, higher values were obtained for the oxytocin group in all seasons (P ≤ 0.01), including the lowest difference between groups for winter (51.43) and the highest for summer (100.61). A higher average birth piglet weight and weaned piglet weight were recorded for the oxytocin group in all seasons. The highest differences in birth piglet weight between groups were noted for spring (0.22 kg; P ≤ 0.01) and winter (0.17 kg; P ≤ 0.05) and in weaned piglet weight for winter and spring (0.58 kg and 0.52 kg; for both, P ≤ 0.01). The greatest daily gains were observed in the winter season (P ≤ 0.05) in favor of oxytocin. On the basis of the presented results, it should be noted that the use of oxytocin into insemination doses improves the farrowing rate and other parameters of the reproductive performance of sows. In the absence of negative effects, year-round insemination with oxytocin addition into seminal doses is recommended, which effectively improves the production performance and reduces the problem of seasonality in reproduction. 相似文献

Nuclear receptor signalling is essential for physiological processes such as metabolism, development, and reproduction. Alterations in the endocrine state that naturally occur during pregnancy result in maternal adaptations to support the feto-placental unit. A series of studies have shown that nuclear receptor signalling is involved in maternal adaptations of bile acid, cholesterol, and lipid homeostasis pathways to ensure maintenance of the nutritional demands of the fetus. We discuss regulation of hepatic nuclear receptors and their target genes in pregnancy and their impact on the development of disorders such as intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy and oestrogen-induced hepatotoxicity. Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating peptide (PACAP), a novel compound with vasoactive intestinal polypeptide-like activity, was recently shown to be localized in the neuronal endings of the human uterus. The purpose of the present study was to assess the functional presence of PACAP mRNA in the decidual endometrium and its relationship to the expression levels of decidual prolactin-related protein (dPRP) and the progesterone receptor mRNAs during decidualization and pregnancy in Sprague-Dawley rats. PACAP was constitutively and temporally expressed in the decidual endometrium and gravid uterus. The time-dependent correlated expression levels of PACAP, dPRP and the progesterone receptor were induced by the neurogenic reproductive signals, i.e. the vagino-cervical/deciduogenic stimuli of decidualization and by the normal equivalent stimuli of mating/blastocyst implantation of gestation. Correlation among the mRNA expression levels of PACAP, dPRP and the progesterone receptor and the coordinated inhibitory actions of the anti-progesterone (RU-486) suggest that there is also correlated time-dependent steroid regulation of the mRNA levels of PACAP, dPRP and the progesterone receptor in the decidual and pregnant uteri. One possible functional meaning for the time-related localization of endometrial/uterine PACAP could be to facilitate endometrial blood flow and increase the availability of metabolic substrates to the developing deciduoma or embryo. The study demonstrates the potential importance of PACAP expression in the regulation of the maternal feto-placental component and suggests a prominent reproductive role for the neuropeptide in mammalian pregnancy. 相似文献

In the last two decades the prevailing opinion, supported by the “estrogen augmented by progesterone” hypothesis, has been that progesterone contributes to the development of breast cancer (BC). Support for this opinion was provided by the finding that some synthetic progestins, when added to estrogen in hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for menopausal complaints, increase the BC risk more than estrogen alone. However, recent findings suggest that both the production of progesterone during pregnancy and the progesterone endogenously produced or exogenously administered outside pregnancy, does not increase BC risk, and could even be protective. The increased BC risk found with the addition of synthetic progestins to estrogen in HRT seems in all likehood due to the fact that these progestins (medroxyprogesterone acetate and 19-nortestosterone-derivatives) are endowed with some non-progesterone-like effects which can potentiate the proliferative action of estrogens. The use of progestational agents in pregnancy, for example to prevent preterm birth, does not cause concern in relation to BC risk. 相似文献

Abstract In order to determine the effects of a varied level of dietary energy intake during pregnancy and lactation on milk yield and composition, first, second and fourth parity sows (Large White × German Landrace) were provided with energy at a level of either: (i) 100% of ME requirement (MEreq) during pregnancy and lactation, (ii) 120% MEreq during pregnancy and 80% during lactation, and (iii) 80% MEreq during pregnancy and 120% during lactation. In spite of equal target levels feed analysis revealed that gestating first parity sows with 120/80 treatment combination and lactating sows of 80/120 treatment combination received 25, and 11 – 17% more digestible N than in the respective 100/100 treatment combination. Irrespective of this 120/80 sows responded with the highest milk DM, fat, and energy contents, and the lowest lactose concentrations whereas protein levels where not affected, irrespective of parity (p < 0.05). Milk yield of sows in 1st and 4th lactation was 85 and 106% of that in 2nd lactation, respectively. Average milk composition was 18.1% DM, 4.9% protein, 6.8% fat, 5.6% lactose, and 0.8% ash. Milk composition changes ceased at day 7 of lactation with a reduction of milk GE and protein, and an increase of lactose content. Concentrations of threonine, arginine, valine, leucine, tyrosine, phenylalanine, cystine, and tryptophan, as well as stearic, oleic, and linoleic acid were higher in colostrum than in milk at later lactation stages. In contrast, laurine, myristic, palmitic, and palmitoleic acids were lower concentrated in colostrum. In conclusion, these results illustrate the importance of body reserve mobilization for milk production in sows and indicate that low energy supply during gestation cannot be compensated by higher energy supply during lactation. 相似文献

problem in hibernating animals. We investigated osmotic and metabolic responses to experimental manipulation of hydration
state in the wood frog (Rana sylvatica), a terrestrial hibernator that encounters low environmental water potential during autumn and winter. In winter-conditioned
frogs, plasma osmolality varied inversely with body water content (range 69–79%, fresh mass) primarily due to increases in
sodium and chloride concentrations, as well as accumulation of glucose and urea. Decreased hydration was accompanied by a
marked reduction in the resting rate of oxygen consumption, which was inversely correlated with plasma osmolality and urea
concentration. In a separate experiment, resting rates of oxygen consumption in fully hydrated frogs receiving injections
of saline or saline containing urea did not differ initially; however, upon dehydration, metabolic rates decreased sooner
in the urea-loaded frogs than in control frogs. Our findings suggest an important role for urea, acting in concert with dehydration,

The hypotheses that short lactation lengths increase embryo mortality by altering endogenous post-weaning steroid concentrations, and that an exogenous steroid regimen during embryo attachment might increase embryo survival were tested using 36 s parity sows assigned randomly to a 2 x 2 factorial. Sows were subjected to either a short lactation (SL, 13.0 days, n = 25) or a long lactation (LL, 31.5 days, n = 11), artificially inseminated at first estrus and treated daily with 2 ml i.m. of either 25 mg progesterone (P4) and 1.25 pg estradiol-17beta (E2) (steroid treatment, ST, n = 17) or the vehicle alone (control treatment, CT, n = 17) on Days 14-20 post-insemination. Blood samples were collected by jugular venipuncture from weaning to 24 days post-insemination on alternate days. Sows subjected to the SL compared to the LL tended to have a longer weaning-to-estrus interval (WEI) (5.3 versus 4.6 days; P < 0. 10), but did not have a significantly reduced conception rate (CR) (71 versus 90%; P > 0.10). The SL and LL sows had a similar ovulation rate (19.9 versus 21.3 corpora lutea, CL; P > 0.05), but SL sows had fewer viable embryos than LL sows (11.5 versus 15.3; P < 0.05) when reproductive tracts were recovered 28-32 days post-insemination. In addition, even after correction for the difference in number of embryos between groups, viable embryos from the SL versus the LL group weighed less (1.63 versus 1.79 g; P < 0.05), had a decreased amnion volume (1.02 versus 1.22 ml; P < 0.05) and apparently produced less estrogens since estrone sulfate concentration was decreased at 24 days post-insemination in SL versus LL sows (4.3 versus 6.3 ng/ml; P < 0.05). Embryo survival (percentage of CL represented by a viable embryo) however, was not different between SL and LL sows (60 versus 74%; P > 0.05) and no differences in post-weaning P4 or E2 concentrations were apparent. Sows that received the ST only tended to have increased P4 concentrations at 16 days post-insemination compared to CT sows and neither the number of viable embryos, nor embryo survival, was increased in ST versus CT sows (14.7 versus 12.2; P > 0.05 and 66 versus 68%; P > 0.05, respectively). These data suggest that short lactations do not increase embryo mortality by inducing aberrant endogenous post-weaning P4 or E2 concentrations. The ventilatory and metabolic responses of lesser spear-nosed bats to hypoxia and hypercapnia were measured to determine whether these corresponded to preliminary allometries and a positive relationship between hypoxic ventilatory threshold andP 50. Ventilatory responses of lesser spear-nosed bats to 3, 5 and 7% CO2 differed significantly from ventilation on air and each other. The magnitude of their ventilatory response to CO2 is consistent with the prediction of a smaller ventilatory response to hypercapnia in small compared to large mammals [ ; Williams et al. (1994)]. Among 12, 10 and 8% O2 treatments only the ventilatory response to 8% O2 differed significantly from ventilation on air or the other treatments. Metabolic rate was significantly reduced at both 10 and 8% O2. The hypoxic ventilatory response of these bats does not support the prediction of a greater response in small compared to large mammals [ ; Boggs and Tenney (1984)]. Their metabolic response is consistent with the hypoxic hypometabolism typical of small mammals, though not of comparable magnitude. The response, expressed as percent change in convection requirement ( ), is also less than that observed in other small mammals. This relative insensitivity to hypoxia may be associated with this bat's unusually high affinity hemoglobin (P50=27.5 torr). 相似文献

Three experiments were designed to evaluate the effect of different circulating progesterone (P4) concentrations during synchronization of ovulation protocol for timed artificial insemination of seasonal anestrous buffalo cows. In the first trial, ovariectomized cows were randomly allocated into one of three groups: using new P4 devices (G-New; n = 8), using devices previously used for 9 days (G-Used1x; n = 8), and using devices previously used for 18 days (G-Used2x; n = 8). The P4 device was maintained for 9 days, and the circulating P4 concentration was measured daily. The circulating P4 concentrations during the P4 device treatment were the lowest for G-Used2x (1.10 ± 0.04 ng/mL), intermediate for G-Used1x (1.52 ± 0.05 ng/mL), and the highest for G-New (2.47 ± 0.07 ng/mL; P = 0.001). In the second trial, 31 anestrous cows had their ovarian follicular dynamics evaluated after receiving the treatments described previously (G-New [n = 10], G-Used1x [n = 11], and G-Used2x [n = 10]). At insertion of the P4 device, cows were administered 2.0 mg of estradiol benzoate. Nine days later, the P4 device was removed and cows were administered 0.53 mg of cloprostenol sodium plus 400 IU of eCG. Forty-eight hours after P4 device removal, 10 μg of buserelin acetate was administered. There were no differences among the groups (G-New vs. G-Used1x vs. G-Used2x) in diameter of the largest follicle at P4 device removal (9.0 ± 0.8 vs. 10.1 ± 0.9 vs. 8.6 ± 0.8 mm; P = 0.35), in interval from P4 device removal to ovulation (77.1 ± 4.5 vs. 76.5 ± 4.7 vs. 74.0 ± 4.4 hours; P = 0.31), or in ovulation rate (80.0% vs. 81.8% vs. 60.0%; P = 0.51). In experiment 3, 350 anestrous cows were randomly assigned into one of the three treatments described previously (G-New, n = 111; G-Used1x, n = 121; G-Used2x, n = 118) and received a timed artificial insemination for 16 hours after buserelin treatment. The 30-day pregnancy rates did not differ among groups (55.9% vs. 55.4% vs. 48.3%; P = 0.39). Thus, the low circulating P4 concentrations released from a used P4 device efficiently control the ovarian follicular growth and had no detrimental effect on the pregnancy rates of the seasonal anestrous buffalo cows. 相似文献

Trials to investigate the effects of limited suckling on sow reproduction and piglet growth were conducted using 41 first parity and 32 second parity Yorkshire sows. Separation of sows from their litters (22 hrs/day, days 21-35 postpartum) induced estrus in 60% of primiparous and 72% of second parity sows during lactation. Compared to control group animals, primiparous sows had higher weaning weights and second parity sows higher rates of embryo survival on day 30 of gestation. Piglets subjected to suckling restriction had weights, at 2 weeks after weaning, equal to those weaned after 5 weeks of unrestricted suckling. We conclude that suckling restriction can provide the dual benefits of an extended piglet nursing period and a decreased breeding to breeding interval in sows. 相似文献

While habitat destruction is thought to be the most important reason for the decline of the Wryneck Jynx torquilla throughout Europe, it has been hypothesised that weather factors may also play a crucial role. We studied the impact of variations
in ambient temperature and rainfall on feeding behaviour, nestling growth and daily brood survival probabilities in a population
from the Swiss Alps. We recorded the frequency of food provisioning and measured nestlings’ growth on 6 days at 17 nests,
and monitored the success of 181 broods from 2002 to 2006. The mean feeding frequency was 7.9 feedings per hour, and increased
with temperature and with nestling age. Changes of body mass, tarsus length and of the 8th primary feather were not strongly
influenced by temperature and rainfall. Body growth was negatively influenced by the initial size of the different body measures
towards the end of the growing phase of the corresponding body measure, pointing towards compensatory growth. Daily brood
survival probabilities declined in the course of the season and with increasing rainfall, and they increased with increasing
temperature and with increasing nestling age. Our findings highlight that the effects of adverse weather on feeding behaviour,
nestling growth and nest survival in Wrynecks are complex, as they alter with the age of the nestlings and possibly with the
duration of the adverse weather events.

Previous studies of changes in women's behavior during the menstrual cycle have offered insight into the motivations underpinning women's preferences for social cues associated with possible direct benefits (e.g., investment, low risk of infection) and indirect benefits (e.g., offspring viability). Here we sought to extend this work by testing for systematic variation in women's preferences for male and female faces and in their attitudes to their romantic relationship during the menstrual cycle. In Study 1, we found partnered women's reported commitment to their romantic relationship and preferences for femininity in male and female faces were strongest on days of the menstrual cycle when progesterone levels are increased (and fertility is low). Happiness in relationships did not change across the cycle. In Study 2, we found that the effect of cycle phase on women's preference for feminine faces was independent of increased attraction to apparent health in faces during the luteal phase. Collectively, these findings are further evidence that women's preferences for social cues associated with possible direct benefits and commitment to relationships are strongest during conditions characterized by raised progesterone level, while attraction to men displaying cues associated with possible indirect benefits is strongest when women are most fertile. 相似文献

Summary The ultrastructure of corpora lutea obtained during the preimplantation, implantation and early postimplantation periods has been studied in 20 western spotted skunks. Fine structure of granulosa lutein cells was correlated with progesterone levels. The corpus luteum of the prolonged (7 month) preimplantation period contained undifferentiated small granulosa cells and differentiated large granulosa lutein cells. The former ranged in size between 12 and 20 and the latter between 20 and 45 . The ratio of small and large cells was about equal in an animal 2 days prior to nidation whereas only few small cells and numerous large cells were observed in an animal estimated to be 8 to 12 hours from nidation. Occasionally small cells were observed amidst large ones during the 24 hour nidation period, i.e. adhesion of trophoblast with the luminal uterine epithelium, but small cells were absent in animals after this period. Small cells had some smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum, rod-shaped mitochondria with platelike cristae, small Golgi complex, and relatively smooth plasma membranes. Large lutein cells had abundant smooth endoplasmic reticulum, membranous whorls of smooth endoplasmic reticulum, usually round mitochondria with tubular and lamellar cristae, a well developed Golgi complex, variable amounts of lipid droplets, and highly plicated and ruffled plasma membranes. Peripheral plasma progesterone levels during the prolonged preimplantation period ranged between 1.1 and 7.9 ng/ml, but during implantation it was between 8 and 16.6 ng/ml. Bivalve molluscs, in common with consumers in general, use behavioral and physiological mechanisms to balance metabolic requirements with available nutrients. This study considered how the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, meets the demands of growth and maintenance, measured in terms of carbon and nitrogen, in a variable food environment. Stoichiometry theory helped to evaluate: a) whether feeding behaviour modifies the intake of C and N given seasonal variability in food quality: b) how rates of metabolism and excretion, and C and N growth efficiencies, respond to mismatch between nutrient intake and the oysters' needs. Two field experiments in the Port Stephens estuary, near Sydney, Australia, measured feeding behaviour, metabolic and growth rates relative to seasonal changes in food supply. In a laboratory experiment, relationships between physiological rates and growth were measured to test a model of growth as a function of absorption of C and N. Potential metabolic targets for compensation were the C/N ratios of body tissues, maintenance and/or of soft tissue added as growth. C/N of whole soft issues varied little during the year (mean 5.4). In July (a time of low food availability of poor quality) growth was negligible and the C/N (maintenance) target was 6.7. In March (abundant food of high quality) growth was rapid with a high N-demand; the C/N of growth was 3.9. In November (medium food quality) there was an enhanced C-demand for glycogen storage; the C/N of growth was 7.9. Feeding behaviour changed the balance between C and N intake across months, primarily due to changes in the selection efficiency for nitrogen, which was highest at low filtration rates on particles of high C/N ratio. Nitrogen intake was favoured over C in July. In November, C-intake increased relative to N. In March, when abundant food nitrogen coincided with a high demand for growth, feeding behaviour was neutral with respect to C/N ratios. In all cases C/N of absorbed matter was greater than the C/N of growth. Growth efficiencies for carbon declined with increased C/N of ingested matter due to higher metabolic increments (SDA) when feeding on lower food quality; the metabolic costs of growth did not vary. In contrast, growth efficiencies for nitrogen did not alter with C/N for ingested matter, due in part to increased nitrogen losses, relative to tissue nitrogen content, when feeding on low C/N food. Nitrogen was therefore conserved metabolically relative to C. Both feeding and metabolic processes contributed to compensation for the mismatch between seasonally variable food quality and the demands of growth. 相似文献

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of restraint stress, which is commonly practised in the field, on plasma concentrations of cortisol, progesterone (P4) and bovine pregnancy-associated glycoprotein-1 (boPAG-1) in pregnant heifers between Days 30 to 40 of gestation. Twelve Holstein-Friesian heifers between Days 30 (Day 0 of experiment) and 40 (Day 10 of experiment) of pregnancy in a Hungarian dairy farm were used in the present study. The heifers were exposed to an acute stressor consisting of immobilisation (restraint stress) in a crush for 2 h (Group 1, n = 6) on Day 2 (Hour 48) and for 2 × 2 h (Group 2, n = 6) on Days 2 and 3 (Hour 72) of the experiment.Transrectal ultrasonography (7.5 MHz linear-array rectal transducer) was performed daily from Day 0 to Day 10 of the experiment to detect embryonic heartbeat or the fate of the conceptus. Blood samples were withdrawn before each ultrasonographic examination. Additional blood samples were withdrawn by 1 and 2 h (at Hours 49 and 50 in Groups 1 and 2 and Hours 73 and 74 in Group 2) of the onset of applying the stressor. Plasma cortisol, P4 and boPAG-1 concentrations were measured by radioimmunoassay. Acute restraint stress significantly (P < 0.001) increased the plasma cortisol level in pregnant heifers at 1 h of the exposure to the stressor at Days 2 (48 h) and 3 (72 h) of the experiment. On the other hand, the restraint stress did not affect the concentration of P4 and boPAG-1 concentrations in both groups. In conclusion, restraint stress for 2 h during early pregnancy in heifers increased blood cortisol, but it did not affect the concentrations of P4 and boPAG-1 between Days 30 to 40 of gestation. 相似文献

The objectives of this study were (1) to establish the characteristics of estrus behavior in mithun cows (n = 12) and (2) to determine the relationships between this behavior and the plasma concentrations of estradiol-17beta (E2), total estrogen, and progesterone. Estrus was detected by visual observations of estrus signs, per recta examination of genitalia and bull parading thrice a day for three consecutive cycles. Among the behavioral signs of estrus, the cow to be mounted by bull (100%) was the best indicator of estrus followed by standing to be mounted (92%). Per rectum examination of genital organs revealed relaxed and open os externa of cervix, turgid uterus, and ovaries having palpable follicles in all animals. The mean (+/-SEM) length of estrus cycle and duration of estrus were recorded to be 21.8 +/- 0.69 days and 12.6 +/- 1.34 h, respectively. Endocrine profiles during the peri-estrus period showed that the mean highest peak concentrations of E2 (27.29 +/- 0.79 pg/ml) and total estrogen (45.69 +/- 2.32 pg/ml) occurred at -3.90 +/- 2.27 and -3.89 +/- 2.26 h prior to the onset of estrus, respectively. Plasma progesterone concentration was basal (0.14 +/- 0.001 ng/ml) during the peri-estrus period. Plasma E2 and total estrogen were found to increase from 6 days before estrus to reach a peak level on the day of estrus and decline thereafter to basal level on day 3 of the cycle. The plasma progesterone concentration was the lowest on the day of estrus showing gradual increase to register a peak level on day 15 of the cycle. Estrus behavior was found to be positively correlated with the maximum peak concentration of E2 (r = 0.89; P < 0.0001) and total estrogen (r = 0.66; P = 0.019) during the peri-estrus period. The mean total estrogen concentration during the peri-estrus period was significantly correlated with estrus behavior (r = 0.60; P = 0.04). The correlations between the estrus behavior and E2:progesterone ratios at 6 days before the onset of estrus (r = 0.92) and on the day of estrus (r = 0.95) was significant. The total estrogen:progesterone ratios at 6 days before the onset of estrus and on the day of estrus were also positively correlated with the estrus behavior (r = 0.86 and 0.88). In conclusion, our results suggest that the maximum peak concentration of E2 and total estrogen and mean level of total estrogen during the peri-estrus period and the E2:progesterone and total estrogen:progesterone ratios on 6 days before the onset of estrus and on the day of estrus are the important factors contributing the behavioral manifestation of estrus in mithun cows. 相似文献

To establish if nutrients limit the growth of bivalves requires information not only on the quality of food available, but also the animals' feeding behaviour and endogenous metabolic demands. We hypothesized that growth of the Sydney rock oyster (Saccostrea glomerata) would vary in response to seasonal changes in food quality rather than quantity. We also predicted that the oysters would show feeding preferences for nitrogen over carbon, and this behaviour would result in carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratios for ingested and absorbed matter that would be lower than the C/N of both the seston and the oysters' estimated metabolic maintenance requirements. The experiments were done in two phases under natural conditions. In phase 1, feeding behaviour was assessed on a single occasion and the results used to pose hypotheses for testing in phase 2, which included measurements made on three occasions encompassing autumn, winter and spring conditions. Growth rates varied with changes in ambient food quality and not with the concentration of total suspended matter. Feeding behaviour responded to food quality and, in most cases, resulted in nitrogen enrichment. For example, when nitrogen was potentially limiting to growth and/or maintenance, due to high food C/N (July) or high nitrogen demand (March), pre-ingestive selection ensured nitrogen enrichment of ingested matter and C/N ratios of ingested matter which were below the maintenance requirement. However, in November, when endogenous demands indicated an increased requirement for carbon, feeding behaviour resulted in carbon enrichment, an increase in carbon conversion efficiency, and ingested C/N ratios greater than the maintenance requirement. The results support the assertion of variable feeding physiology in oysters, responsive to both exogenous (seasonal differences in carbon and nitrogen availability) and endogenous (cycles of reproduction and growth) factors. 相似文献

Two experiments were designed to evaluate the effects of treatments with low versus high serum progesterone (P4) concentrations on factors associated with pregnancy success in postpubertal Nellore heifers submitted to either conventional or fixed timed artificial insemination (FTAI). Heifers were synchronized with a new controlled internal drug release device (CIDR; 1.9 g of P4 [CIDR1]) or a CIDR previously used for 18 days (CIDR3) plus 2 mg of estradiol (E2) benzoate on Day 0 and 12.5 mg of prostaglandin F2α on Day 7. In experiment 1 (n = 723), CIDR were removed on Day 7 or 9 and heifers were inseminated after estrus detection. In experiment 2 (n = 1083), CIDR were all removed on Day 9 and FTAI was performed either 48 hours later in heifers that received E2 cypionate (ECP) on Day 9 (0.5 mg; E48) or 54 or 72 hours later in conjunction with administration of GnRH (100 μg; G54 or G72). Synchronization with CIDR1 resulted in greater serum P4 concentrations and smaller follicle diameters on Days 7 and 9 in both experiments. In experiment 1, treatment with CIDR for 9 days decreased the interval from CIDR removal to estrus (Day 7, 3.76 ± 0.08 days vs. Day 9, 2.90 ± 0.07; P < 0.01) and improved conception (Day 7, 57.1% vs. Day 9, 65.8%; P = 0.05) and pregnancy rates (Day 7, 37.6% vs. Day 9, 45.3%; P = 0.04). In experiment 2, treatment with ECP improved (P < 0.01) the proportion of heifers in estrus (E48, 40.9%a; G54, 17.1%c; and G72, 32.0%b), but the pregnancy rate was not affected (P = 0.64) by treatments (E48, 38.8%; G54, 35.5%; G72, 37.5%). Synchronization with CIDR3 increased follicle diameter at FTAI (CIDR1, 11.07 ± 0.10 vs. CIDR3, 11.61 ± 0.10 mm; P < 0.01), ovulation rate (CIDR1, 82.8% vs. CIDR3, 88.0%; P < 0.01) and did not affect conception (CIDR1, 42.2 vs. CIDR3, 45.1%; P = 0.38) or pregnancy rates (CIDR1, 34.7 vs. CIDR3, 39.4%; P = 0.11). In conclusion, length of treatment with P4 affected the fertility of heifers bred based on estrus detection. When the heifers were submitted to FTAI protocol, follicle diameter at FTAI (≤10.7 mm, 23.6%; 10.8–15.7 mm, 51.5%; ≥15.8 mm, 30.0%; P < 0.01) was the main factor that affected conception and pregnancy rates. 相似文献

Host trees for obligate epiphytes are dynamic patches that emerge, grow and fall, and metacommunity diversity critically depends
on efficient dispersal. Even though species that disperse by large asexual diaspores are strongly dispersal limited, asexual
dispersal is common. The stronger dispersal limitation of asexually reproducing species compared to species reproducing sexually
via small spores may be compensated by higher growth rates, lower sensitivity to habitat conditions, higher competitive ability
or younger reproductive age. We compared growth and reproduction of different groups of epiphytic bryophytes with contrasting
dispersal (asexual vs. sexual) and life history strategies (colonists, short- and long-lived shuttle species, perennial stayers)
in an old-growth forest stand in the boreo-nemoral region in eastern Sweden. No differences were seen in relative growth rates
between asexual and sexual species. Long-lived shuttles had lower growth rates than colonists and perennial stayers. Most
groups grew best at intermediate bark pH. Interactions with other epiphytes had a small, often positive effect on growth.
Neither differences in sensitivity of growth to habitat conditions nor differences in competitive abilities among species
groups were found. Habitat conditions, however, influenced the production of sporophytes, but not of asexual diaspores. Presence
of sporophytes negatively affected growth, whereas presence of asexual diaspores did not. Sexual species had to reach a certain
colony size before starting to reproduce, whereas no such threshold existed for asexual reproduction. The results indicate
that the epiphyte metacommunity is structured by two main trade-offs: dispersal distance vs. reproductive age, and dispersal
distance vs. sensitivity to habitat quality. There seems to be a trade-off between growth and sexual reproduction, but not
asexual. Trade-offs in species traits may be shaped by conflicting selection pressures imposed by habitat turnover and connectivity
rather than by species interactions.
