Reproductive cycles in sheep   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
During the last three decades, there has been remarkable progress in many aspects of ovarian biology due to advances in real-time ultrasonography, which permits non-invasive, repeated monitoring of ovarian structures in conscious and non-anaesthetised animals. This review is primarily concerned with ovarian activity, as determined by transrectal ultrasonography, and measurements of circulating concentrations of gonadotrophins and ovarian steroids during reproductive cycles in sheep. The growth of antral follicles reaching ostensibly ovulatory sizes occurs in a wave-like pattern throughout the breeding season in both prolific and non-prolific breeds of sheep. There are typically 3 or 4 waves of follicle development during the interovulatory interval. Follicular wave emergence is primarily controlled by changes in circulating concentrations of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) but diminished ovarian responsiveness to gonadotrophic signals may result in reduced numbers of follicular waves. In cyclic ewes, the largest ovarian follicles acquire the ability to secrete oestradiol from the day of emergence with peak oestradiol secretion occurring about the time they reach maximum diameter. The high ovulation rate in some prolific breeds may be achieved by the ovulation of follicles from the last two waves of the interovulatory interval. Prolific ewes tend to produce more but smaller corpora lutea (CL) and have lower serum concentrations of progesterone during the luteal phase of the oestrous cycle as compared to less prolific genotypes. Lastly, recent studies of the endocrine influences on ovarian function have brought into question the existence of strong follicular dominance, as seen in cattle, and provided new insights into the effects of luteal progesterone on antral follicular development in ewes.  相似文献

Conventional classification of reproductive modes in female elasmobranchs fails to account for the diversity in ovarian dynamics that operate during oviparous and viviparous cycles. Delineating this diversity is crucial for understanding the endocrine regulation of the manifold physiological mechanisms utilized to retain and protect eggs and developing embryos, to fuel embryogenesis, and to manage the intrauterine milieu. Oocyte development and follicular steroidogenesis overlap with egg retention and pregnancy in some species, whereas in others the follicular phase of the cycle is temporally separated from the gravid period. A luteal phase predominates the post-ovulatory period in viviparous species. In oviparous species, the luteal phase overlaps with the follicular cycle. This heterogeneity in ovulatory cycles suggests that the endocrine system evolved a transmutable system for regulating steroidogenesis and the control of the reproductive events. The reproductive biology and endocrinology of the oviparous little skate and lecithotrophic viviparous spiny dogfish are reviewed in order to derive a working hypothesis that explains the complex nature of endocrine patterns observed in species utilizing disparate reproductive modes. An understanding of the adaptations in ovarian dynamics to particular ovulatory cycles is key to developing theories about the evolution of reproductive strategies in female elasmobranchs. J. Exp. Although enormous progress has been made in understanding the events and regulation of the later stages of ovarian follicular development, the early stages of development, to a large extent and particularly in large mammals, remain a mystery. Mechanisms that regulate the initiation of follicular growth (follicle activation) and the ensuing growth and differentiation of preantral follicles are of considerable interest, since their elucidation is a prerequisite to use of the primordial pool to enhance reproductive efficiency in domestic animals, humans, and endangered species. This review is an attempt to summarize the approaches that have been taken to further this goal and the results thus far of these efforts. Preantral follicular development can be divided into three stages: activation of primordial follicles, the primary to secondary follicle transition, and the development of secondary follicles to the periantral stage. The activation of primordial follicles in vitro has been achieved thus far in rodents, cattle, and primates, where it occurs spontaneously without the addition of growth factors or hormones. The ovaries of rodents are small enough to be cultured intact and, in that experimental situation, some follicles activate, while many remain in the resting pool, and the addition of specific factors can increase or decrease the number of follicles that leave the resting pool in vitro. In contrast, follicular activation in cattle and primates has been studied by culturing small pieces of the ovarian cortex, rich in primordial follicles, and the great majority of the primordial follicles activate in that situation, suggesting the importance of inhibitory factors to the normal, gradual exit of follicles from the resting pool. In cultured rodent ovaries, follicles appear to pass easily and spontaneously from the primary to the secondary stage, whereas few of the activated follicles in cultured cortical pieces from cattle or primates progress from the primary to the secondary stage. Understanding the requirements for the primary to secondary transition is critical for growing follicles activated in vitro to the late preantral and antral stages. In contrast, the requirements for the continued growth of larger preantral follicles, which can be isolated for in vitro studies, have been extensively explored in rodents and to a lesser extent in domestic species. A number of hormones and factors have been implicated and will be discussed. Taken together, the results highlight the need for a better understanding of the earliest stages of follicular development in domestic ruminants, particularly follicle activation and the primary to secondary follicle transition.  相似文献

Reproductive cycles in pigs   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The oestrous cycle in pigs spans a period of 18-24 days. It consists of a follicular phase of 5-7 days and a luteal phase of 13-15 days. During the follicular phase, small antral follicles develop into large, pre-ovulatory follicles. Being a polytocous species, the pig may ovulate from 15 to 30 follicles, depending on age, nutritional status and other factors. During the luteal phase, follicle development is less pronounced, although there is probably a considerable turnover of primordial to early antral follicles that fail to further develop due to progesterone inhibition of gonadotrophic hormones. Nevertheless, formation of the early antral follicle pool during this stage probably has a major impact on follicle dynamics in the follicular phase in terms of number and quality of follicles. Generally, gilts are mated at their second or third estrous cycle after puberty. After farrowing, pigs experience a lactational anoestrus period, until they are weaned and the follicular phase is initiated, resulting in oestrus and ovulation 4-7 days after weaning. This paper describes the major endocrine processes during the follicular and luteal phases that precede and follow ovulation. The role of nutrition and metabolic status on these processes are briefly discussed.  相似文献

In dairy farm management economic losses resulting from cystic ovarian degeneration are well known. In spite of this, neither the definition nor the aetiopathology of ovarian cysts are clear and agreed upon. Also the usual classification in luteal and follicular cysts, requiring ultrasound examination together with assessment of P4 to be accurate, is not very helpful in field conditions. Consequently a single treatment is often provided for both types of cysts, and since the 1970s treatments with GnRH and its analogues have been considered very useful. Nevertheless differences in recovery rates after GnRH treatment in animals with either luteal or follicular cysts are reported. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate recovery rate, recovery time and conception rate after treatment with buserelin (GnRH-analogue) in cows with ovarian luteal or follicular cysts. In a 5 years period, 150 cows with cysts out of a total of 990 animals, were detected and treated intravenously between 45 and 60 days PP with 20μg buserelin. No statistically significant differences were found in recovery rates and in conception rates between the two types of cysts. Comparison of recovery times showed significantly shorter recovery for cows with luteal cysts. The results emphasise the usefulness of GnRH to treat ovarian cysts regardless of their type, in relation to both recovery and conception rates. Intervals from treatment to resumption of ovarian activity were affected by the characteristics of ovarian cysts, with a faster recovery for the luteal type.  相似文献

Irregular menstrual cycles, reduced responses to exogenous hormonal treatments, and altered endocrine profiles (high FSH/high LH/low AMH) are observed in women with increasing age before menopause. In this study, because the granulosa cell‐specific Nrg1 knockout mice (gcNrg1KO) presented ovarian and endocrine phenotypes similar to older women, we sought to understand the mechanisms of ovarian aging and to develop a new strategy for improving fertility in older women prior to menopause. In the ovary of 6‐month‐old gcNrg1KO mice, follicular development was blocked in bilayer secondary follicles and heterogeneous cells accumulated in ovarian stroma. The heterogeneous cells in ovarian stroma were distinguished as two different types: (i) the LH receptor‐positive endocrine cells and (ii) actin‐rich fibrotic cells expressing collagen. Both the endocrine and fibrotic cells disappeared following long‐term treatment with a GnRH antagonist, indicating that the high levels of serum LH induced the survival of both cell types and the abnormal endocrine profile to reduce fertility. Moreover, follicular development to the antral stages was observed with reduced LH and the disappearance of the abnormal stromal cells. Mice treated with the GnRH antagonist regained normal, recurrent estrous cycles and continuously delivered pups for at least for 3 months. We conclude that endocrine and matrix alternations occur within the ovarian stroma with increasing age and that abolishing these alternations resets the cyclical release of LH. Thus, GnRH antagonist treatments might provide a new, noninvasive strategy for improving fertility in a subset of aging women before menopause.  相似文献

The following study was undertaken to localize androgen receptors (AR) and aromatase cytochrome P450 (P450arom) in porcine ovarian tissue because ovarian androgens may act locally to modulate follicular and luteal function in various species. Androgen receptor was detected immunohistochemically in granulosa and theca cells of preantral as well as in growing antral follicles. The most intensive staining was observed in the antral granulosa layer. Luteinizing granulosa cells of preovulatory follicles, and luteal cells from the early and midluteal phases stained weakly for the androgen receptor. Fully regressed corpora lutea in the early follicular phase of the next cycle did not stain for androgen receptor. In contrast, granulosa cells were very weakly stained for aromatase in early stages of follicular development. The P450arom was maximally expressed with the same intensity in mural and antral layers in large ovulatory follicles. Corpora lutea from the early luteal phase showed positive staining, whereas those from midluteal phase did not stain for aromatase, some cells of regressed corpora lutea unexpectedly exhibited aromatase staining.  相似文献

Stimulant abuse continues to be a growing problem among women. Over the last 10-15 years, an increasing number of studies have focused on factors that may be implicated in stimulant abuse in women as compared to men, including the role of hormonal fluctuations across the menstrual cycle. Numerous preclinical studies have documented that female rodents are more sensitive than male rodents to the behavioral effects of stimulant administration and the hormone estradiol is involved in the enhanced response to stimulants observed in females. In contrast, fewer studies have been conducted in humans and non-human primates addressing the role of sex and gonadal hormones on the effects of cocaine. This review paper presents a recent update on data collected in our Human Cocaine Challenge Laboratory and our Non-human Primate Laboratory, including analysis of cocaine pharmacokinetics, sex differences, the menstrual cycle, and the role of progesterone in modulating the response to cocaine. Our studies indicate that there is minimal evidence that the response to intranasal cocaine varies across the menstrual cycle or between men and women. In contrast, the response to smoked cocaine is greater in the follicular phase than the luteal phase and differences between men and women generally only emerge when men are compared to women in the luteal phase. In terms of potential hormonal mechanisms for these differences, the hormone progesterone attenuates the subjective response to cocaine. With respect to cocaine self-administration, there are minimal changes across the menstrual cycle in both humans and non-human primates. Thus, there is converging evidence across a range of species that the behavioral effects of cocaine (1) differ between males and females, (2) differ in relation to hormonal fluctuations, (3) can be attenuated by progesterone (at least in females), and (4) do not appear to be related to differences in cocaine pharmacokinetics.  相似文献

Resumption of follicle growth in gilts after ovarian autografting   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The aims of the study were to evaluate autografting of porcine ovarian tissue in terms of establishment of a blood supply, follicle survival and development, commencement of oestrous cycles and endocrine patterns in this polyovular species. Experiment 1, a preliminary study on four gilts, showed that ovarian tissue slices survived the grafting procedure and re-vascularised. In Experiment 2, a further six pre-pubertal gilts had both ovaries surgically removed and two thin cortical slices of each ovary were immediately reattached to each of the ovarian pedicles. Blood samples were taken at surgery and then weekly. Two gilts were slaughtered 2 weeks after surgery and ovarian tissue recovered. The remaining four gilts underwent daily checks for behavioural oestrus until slaughter 24 weeks after surgery. All four gilts showed standing heat at least once prior to slaughter. Plasma LH and FSH concentrations increased significantly (P<0.01) by 3 days after surgery, then fell gradually, but did not return to pre-surgery levels. Progesterone concentrations showed some evidence of cyclicity in all animals. In the grafted tissue, re-vascularisation of the tissue was apparent by 2 weeks post-grafting, although no preantral or antral follicles were observed. The tissue recovered after 24 weeks contained healthy preantral and antral follicles, luteal tissue and some large cystic follicles. It is unclear whether these cysts were the result of ovarian or hypothalamic/pituitary disturbance. In conclusion, the results of this study have shown that follicle growth and resumption of cyclicity can be achieved following ovarian autografting in pigs and indicate that this will be a useful model for investigating the mechanisms that control the early stages of follicular growth and ultimately ovulation rate in this multiovular species.  相似文献

The goal of the present investigation was to determine in the squirrel monkey the source and pattern of inhibin, a hormone known to effect reproductive steroid levels via pituitary and ovarian mechanisms. Since this seasonally polyestrous species is known to have elevated serum levels of reproductive steroids compared to other primates, the levels of ovarian alpha subunit mRNA expression and serum total alpha inhibin, estradiol, progesterone, and luteinizing hormone were measured and compared to human levels. Expression of the alpha subunit was robust in monkey luteal tissue compared to expression in human luteal tissue. Squirrel monkey serum inhibin peaked 4 days after the luteinizing hormone surge and correlated with progesterone changes. These luteal serum levels of inhibin were greater than 12 times higher than the human levels yet bio‐LH activities were less than in the human during the luteal phase. Inhibin concentrations during the non‐breeding season were generally half the levels measured in the breeding season and undetectable in ovariectomized animals. However, exogenous FSH stimulation induced a marked rise in inhibin, which correlated with an estradiol rise. In conclusion, abundant alpha inhibin subunit expression in the luteal ovary of the squirrel monkey and loss of serum delectability in ovariectomized animals indicates that the principle source of inhibin in the squirrel monkey is the ovary. Elevated serum inhibin levels during the luteal phase concurrent with ovulatory‐size follicular development is unique among species studied thus far. Possible simultaneous inhibin production from both follicular and luteal tissue may be responsible for the exceptionally high inhibin levels. Am. J. The major limitation to the development of embryo production in cattle is the strong between-animal variability in ovulatory response to FSH-induced superovulation, mainly due to differences in ovarian activity at the time of treatment. This study aimed to establish whether anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) was an endocrine marker of follicular populations in the cow, as in human, and a possible predictor of the ovarian response to superovulation. Anti-Müllerian hormone concentrations in plasma varied 10-fold between cows before treatment and were found to be highly correlated with the numbers of 3- to 7-mm antral follicles detected by ovarian ultrasonography before treatment (r=0.79, P<0.001) and the numbers of ovulations after treatment (r=0.64, P<0.01). Between-animal differences in AMH concentrations were found to be unchanged after a 3-mo delay (r=0.87, P<0.01), indicating that AMH endocrine levels were characteristic of each animal on a long-term period. The population of healthy 3- to 7-mm follicles was the main target of superovulatory treatments, contained the highest AMH concentrations and AMH mRNA levels compared with larger follicles, and contributed importantly to AMH endocrine levels. In conclusion, AMH was found to be a reliable endocrine marker of the population of small antral gonadotropin-responsive follicles in the cow. Moreover, AMH concentrations in the plasma of individuals were indicative of their ability to respond to superovulatory treatments.  相似文献

Ovarian hormones are known to affect endocrine pancreas function. However, data concerning the effects of anovulatory menstrual cycles in regularly menstruating women on endocrine pancreas and blood metabolites are lacking. We examined plasma insulin, glucagon, glucose, lactate, urea and glycerol concentrations in reproductive-age, regularly menstruating females classified as ovulating or non-ovulating on the basis of basal body temperature measurements and plasma 17beta-estradiol and progesterone determinations. All measurements were performed twice--in the follicular and again in the luteal phases of the menstrual cycle. There were no differences in plasma lactate and glycerol concentrations between the two groups of subjects. Plasma insulin concentrations tended to be lower in non-ovulating than in ovulating women. In addition, plasma glucagon did not differ in the follicular (33.2 pmol/l) or luteal phase of the menstrual cycle in females with disturbed ovarian hormone secretion (34.1 pmol/l). In contrast, plasma glucagon concentrations in the luteal phase (32.8 pmol/l) were significantly higher than in the follicular phase (24.9 pmol/l) of the menstrual cycle in ovulating women. Plasma glucose concentrations in the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle in non-ovulating women (4.1 mmol/l) were slightly but significantly lower than in their ovulating counterparts (5.3 mmol/l). Furthermore, no correlations were noted between plasma glucose and insulin-to-glucagon molar ratio in non-ovulating subjects. Plasma urea concentrations in non-ovulating women were markedly lower than in ovulating women in both follicular and luteal phases of the menstrual cycle (4.1 and 3.9 mmol/l vs. 5.3 and 5.4 mmol/l in non-ovulating and ovulating women, respectively). In ovulating women, plasma urea levels in both cycle phases were significantly correlated with plasma glucagon concentrations, but no such correlation was found in non-ovulating women. In conclusion, anovulatory menstrual cycles in premenopausal females slightly altered pancreatic hormone plasma levels but markedly impaired their action on plasma glucose and urea concentrations.  相似文献

Ovarian function in ewes at the onset of the breeding season   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Transrectal ultrasonography of ovaries was performed each day, during the expected transition from anoestrus to the breeding season (mid-August to early October), in six Western white-faced cross-bred ewes, to record ovarian antral follicles > or = 3 mm in size and luteal structures. Jugular blood samples were collected daily for radioimmunoassay (RIA) of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), oestradiol and progesterone. The first ovulation of the breeding season was followed by the full-length oestrous cycle in all ewes studied. Prior to the ovulation, all ewes exhibited a distinct increase in circulating concentrations of progesterone, yet no corpora lutea (CL) were detected and luteinized unovulated follicles were detected in only three ewes. Secretion of FSH was not affected by the cessation of anoestrus and peaks of episodic FSH fluctuations were associated with the emergence of ovarian follicular waves (follicles growing from 3 to > or = 5 mm). During the 17 days prior to the first ovulation of the breeding season, there were no apparent changes in the pattern of emergence of follicular waves. Mean daily numbers of small antral follicles (not growing beyond 3 mm in diameter) declined (P < 0.05) after the first ovulation. The ovulation rate, maximal total and mean luteal volumes and maximal serum progesterone concentrations, but not mean diameters of ovulatory follicles, were ostensibly lower during the first oestrous cycle of the breeding season compared with the mid-breeding season of Western white-faced ewes. Oestradiol secretion by ovarian follicles appeared to be fully restored, compared with anoestrous ewes, but it was not synchronized with the growth of the largest antral follicles of waves until after the beginning of the first oestrous cycle. An increase in progesterone secretion preceding the first ovulation of the breeding season does not result, as previously suggested, from the ovulation of immature ovarian follicles and short-lived CL, but progesterone may be produced by luteinized unovulated follicles and/or interstitial tissue of unknown origin. This increase in serum concentrations of progesterone does not alter the pattern of follicular wave development, hence it seems to be important mainly for inducing oestrous behaviour, synchronizing it with the preovulatory surge of luteinizing hormone (LH), and preventing premature luteolysis during the ensuing luteal phase. Progesterone may also enhance ovarian follicular responsiveness to circulating gonadotropins through a local mechanism.  相似文献

To date, ultrasonography of monkey ovaries is rare and typically of low resolution. The objectives of this study were to use state‐of‐the‐art, high‐resolution, transabdominal ultrasonography with real‐time Doppler capabilities to: (1) determine whether one can reliably detect in real time the large dominant follicle, the corpus luteum (CL), and small (<2 mm) antral follicles on the ovaries of rhesus monkeys during the natural menstrual cycle; and (2) predict the follicular response of rhesus ovaries to controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) protocols. Rhesus monkeys were selected for transabdominal ultrasonography using a GE Voluson 730 Expert Doppler System at discrete stages of the menstrual cycle. Subsequently, serial ultrasound scanning was employed to observe growth of antral follicles and the CL. Finally, females were scanned to assess follicular growth during COS. The dominant structure and small antral follicles (<2 mm) were reliably visualized in real time. The follicle destined to ovulate could be identified by size differential by day 3 of the follicular phase. The number of small antral follicles present before onset of COS protocol correlated positively with the number of metaphase II‐stage oocytes collected after treatment. The results of this study demonstrate that the population dynamics of antral follicle pools can be noninvasively evaluated in monkeys during natural and pharmacologic ovarian cycles. Am. J. Nowadays, in vitro study of follicular dynamics of primordial and primary follicular stages is limited because in vitro culture systems for these follicles are lacking, both in domestic animal species and in human. Therefore, additional insights might be generated by grafting ovarian tissue into immunodeficient mice to study activation and maturation of early follicular stages. A considerable amount of data has already been gathered in laboratory animals and through clinical application of human assisted reproduction technologies where live births were reported recently after the use of (cryopreserved) ovarian grafts. However, given that human preantral follicles are difficult to obtain and that there are many similarities between the bovine and human species with regard to ovarian physiology, the bovine model offers exciting additional prospects and is therefore discussed in more detail. This review will focus on recent developments related to preantral follicle and (repeated) ovarian tissue retrieval and xenotransplantation of (bovine) ovarian tissue strips to immunodeficient mice as a model to study preantral follicular dynamics. Different grafting strategies will be discussed as well as the consequences of this procedure on the viability and dynamic behavior of the grafted tissue and follicles.  相似文献

The aim of the present study was to investigate the temporal relationship between the secretory pattern of serum LH and FSH concentrations and waves of ovarian antral follicles during the luteal phase of the estrous cycle in sheep. The growth pattern of ovarian antral follicles and CL were monitored by transrectal ultrasonography and gonadotropin concentrations were measured in blood samples collected every 12 min for 6 h/d from 7 to 14 d after ovulation. There were two follicular waves (penultimate and final waves of the cycle) emerging and growing during the period of intensive blood sampling. Mean and basal LH concentrations and LH pulse frequency increased (P < 0.001) with decreasing progesterone concentration at the end of the cycle. Mean and basal FSH concentrations reached a peak (P < 0.01) on the day of follicular wave emergence before declining to a nadir by 2 d after emergence. None of the parameters of pulsatile LH secretion varied significantly with either the emergence of the final follicular wave or with the end of the growth phase of the largest follicle of the penultimate wave of the cycle. However, mean and basal LH concentrations did increase (P < 0.05) after the end of the growth phase of the largest follicle of the final follicular wave of the cycle. Furthermore, the end of the growth phase of the largest follicle of the final wave coincided with functional luteolysis. In summary, there was no abrupt or short-term change in pulsatile LH secretion in association with the emergence or growth of the largest follicle of a wave. We concluded that the emergence and growth of ovarian antral follicles in follicular waves do not require changes in LH secretion, but may involve changes in sensitivity of ovarian follicles to serum LH concentrations.  相似文献

In the growing heifer calve, there is an early post-natal, gonadotrophin driven increase in ovarian antral follicle growth. The endocrine regulation of and reason for this initial stimulation of ovarian follicular development are not fully understood. This initial endocrine activity appears to be later held in check by negative feedback suppression mechanisms until the heifer is of a sufficient body size to initiate oestrous cycles and to reproduce. There is increasing evidence from recent ultrasonographic studies, performed in the same groups of prepubertal heifer calves, that the development of ovarian antral follicles and tubular genitalia occur in parallel. There appear to be two distinct periods of enhanced development of the reproductive organs, from 2 to 14 weeks of age and again from 34 to 60 weeks of age, or just prior to puberty. First ovulation in heifers is preceded by a gradual increase in pulsed LH secretion, which results in enhanced antral follicle development and oestrogen production. It was demonstrated that prepubertal heifers produced recurrent antral follicular waves; maximum sizes and life span of the dominant follicles of waves, as well as periodicity and FSH dependency of wave emergence were similar to those in adult cattle. In does, no Graafian follicles are seen at birth and total follicle numbers increase to 2 months of age, and then decline to 5 months of age. In ewe lambs, studies using transrectal ovarian ultrasonography showed that antral follicle recruitment and growth increased after the first 2 months of age and just before puberty. This bi-phasic pattern of changes in ovarian follicle recruitment and growth is strikingly similar to that in heifer calves, but it contrasts with earlier post-mortem examinations of ovaries in ewe lambs. Unlike in cattle and adult ewes, the rhythmic pattern of follicular wave emergence was not established in pre- and peripubertal ewe lambs. The early increase in antral follicle numbers and size in ewe lambs may be, at least in part, due to changes in FSH release and potency, and enhanced follicle production prior to first ovulation is probably caused by an increase in the frequency of LH pulses.  相似文献

Evaluating ovarian cycle activity through longitudinal progestagen monitoring is important for optimizing breeding management of captive elephants and understanding impact of life events (births, deaths, and transfers) on reproductive function. This study summarized serum progestagen profiles for eight Asian mainland elephants (Elephas maximus indicus) and one Bornean elephant (E. maximus borneensis) at the Oregon Zoo over a 20-yr interval, and represents the longest longitudinal dataset evaluated to date. Estrous cycle characteristics were more varied than previously reported for this species, with an overall duration of 12 to 19 wk, luteal phase duration of 4 to 15 wk, and follicular phase duration of 2 to 12 wk. In general, there was more cycle variability across than within individual elephants. Compared with other elephants in the group, the Borneo female exhibited consistently longer cycle lengths, higher progestagen concentrations, and greater cycle variability; however, it is not known if this represents a subspecies or an individual difference. Cycle durations did not appear to change over time or with age, and the first pubertal cycle was similar to subsequent cycles. Variability in duration of the follicular phase was greater than that of the luteal phase. In addition, there was a significant negative relationship between luteal and follicular phase durations, suggesting a possible regulatory role of the follicular phase in maintaining a relatively consistent cycle duration within individuals. Overall, we found these elephants to be highly resilient in that major life events (births, deaths, and changes in herd structure) had minimal effect on cycle dynamics over time. In conclusion, the higher range in cycle phase characteristics is likely because of the larger number of elephants studied and longer duration of longitudinal monitoring, and may be more representative of the captive population as a whole. Furthermore, identification of significant interanimal variability suggests that understanding the complexities of herd reproductive characteristics could facilitate development of more effective institution-specific breeding management strategies.  相似文献

The mechanism governing the number of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) peaks and emerging follicular waves in ruminants remains unknown. The main purpose of the present study was to examine the relationships between progesterone (P(4)) levels, circulating concentrations of FSH and antral follicular development throughout the interovulatory interval in sheep. We retrospectively analyzed and compared daily serum concentrations of (P4), FSH and estradiol (E2) obtained in cyclic (November-December) Western White Face ewes (Columbia×Rambouillet) that had 3 (n=10) or 4 (n=19) follicular waves per estrous cycle. Follicular growth was monitored in all animals by daily transrectal ultrasonography. Mean P(4) concentrations were greater (p<0.05) in sheep with 4 waves per cycle compared to their counterparts with 3 waves of follicular growth. The ewes with 3 waves exceeded (p<0.05) animals with 4 follicular waves in mean serum FSH concentrations on days 0-2, 6, 7, 9-11, 14 and 15 post-ovulation. Animals with 4 follicular waves exceeded (p<0.05) the ewes with 3 waves in mean serum E(2)> concentrations on days - 1, 2 and 10 of the estrous cycle studied (day 0=ovulation). The present results are supportive of the notion that luteal P(4) is an important endocrine signal, which controls the periodicity of FSH peaks and the number of emerging follicular waves in cyclic ewes.  相似文献
