Summary O. plebs (Hurley 1965) is a dominant bottom species of amphipoda, occuring in the investigated area at 10 to 760 m. Population structure and sex proportions depend upon the depth and the season of the year of sampling. Development of eggs occurs in winter; the young hatch in spring; the number of eggs produced is proportional to the volume of females. A relationship has been established between length and wet/dry body weight ofO. plebs. The species is necrophagus, long enduring without food. At -1.8°C retention of food in the gut may last from several hours to several days. Heart beat frequency oscillates between 40–80 beats/min at -1.8°C and depends on temperature. A temperature near 8°C is lethal. Oxygen consumption ofO. plebs depends on their developmental stage and sex and on trophic conditions. The level of metabolism of starved animals can be half that of fed animals. The greatest differences in oxygen consumption occur at-1.8°C, the ambient temperature. Oxygen consumption as a reaction to higher temperatures is different for starved and fed animals.O. plebs are hypostenothermic organisms; that is, they can adapt to the lowest temperature occuring in the marine environment.In memory of Mary Alice McWhinnie (1922–1980)  相似文献

Summary Specimens of the Antarctic fish P. borchgrevinki were collected from just beneath the sea-ice in McMurdo Sound over the period 8 November to 6 December, 1985. The stomach contents of 200 fish were analysed and compared with the co-occurrence of the prey species in the plankton. Numerically, the dominant prey was a thecosomatid pteropod Limacina helicina (83%), followed by a hyperiid amphipod Hyperiella dilatata (5%). Other prey species in decreasing order of occurrence were Euphausia crystallorophias, Euchaeta antarctica, other copepods, a decapod crustacean larva, chaetognaths, the amphipods Orchomene plebs and Epimiriella macronyx, and unidentified juvenile fish. The order of frequency of occurrence of these prey in the guts of all the fish was H. dilatata (in 73% of the fish), L. helicina (71%), calanoid copepods (55%), chaetognaths (51%), E. crystallorophias (42%), decapod crustacean larva (32%), O. plebs (27%), juvenile fish (20%), and E. macronyx (14%). In volumetric terms, the dominant diet contributors were O. plebs (38%), L. helicina (17%) and chaetognaths (15%). All prey except O. plebs and E. macronyx were taken in concurrent plankton samples. Although planktivory of Pagothenia borchgrevinki is confirmed, it is not certain whether feeding is confined to the immediate sub-ice environment.  相似文献

Summary The distribution and scavenging habits of the two most abundant lysianassid amphipods in McMurdo Sound differ markedly. Orchomene plebs lives primarily in deep water (>100 m), where planktonic and benthic food is sparser and scavenging events are less common and predictable than in shallower water. Orchomene plebs is common in shallow areas (<100 m) only under the Ross Ice Shelf and along the western McMurdo Sound. Here Weddell seals frequent tidal cracks in which they discard carrion and defecate; otherwise food is scarce. Orchomene pinguides lives on shallow (<10 m) wave-cut benches that are rich in food along the eastern McMurdo Sound. They, along with other omnivorous invertebrates which scavenge the food-rich eastern sound benches, are rare from shallow water along the western sound. The eastern benches are bathed by dense plankton blooms and harbor a high biomass of benthic diatoms and invertebrates. Scavenging events there were observed throughout the year. Orchomene plebs is larger and more motile, and came to laboratory carrion and baited field traps more rapidly and in greater numbers than O. pinguides. The crop contents of O. plebs contained only amorphous organic matter that suggested a scavenging habit. Crops of O. pinguides contained not only amorphous organic matter but also invertebrate prey, especially planktonic copepods that impact the bottom during winter.  相似文献

  • 1.1. Total chromophore contents as well as the contributions made by 11-cis retinal were determined by high pressure liquid chromatography in light- and dark-adapted eyes of Orchomene plebs and Glyptonotus antarcticus (Amphipoda and Isopoda, respectively).
  • 2.2. In O. plebs the highest amount of total chromophore in pmol/eye was found to be 18.5 in 36 hr dark-adapted animals. The lowest amount (11.6 pmol/eye) was recorded in 24 hr light-adapted individuals.
  • 3.3. In dark-adapted O. plebs, irrespective of whether dark-adapted for 36 or 60 hr, the percentage of 11-cis retinal was maximally 96.6%. In the light-adapted material it reached 71.2%
  • 4.4. In eyes of 20 hr dark-adapted Glyptonotous antarcticus, possibly because of insufficient dark adaptation, a total chromophore content of only 3.2 pmol/eye was found. The percentage of 11-cis retinal was 55.8.
  • 5.5. Porphyropsin with its testable 3-dehydroretinal (vitamin A2-aldehyde) was not encountered in any of our samples.

Calculations of photopigment per gram body weight and a comparison with data from freshwater crayfish show that dark-adapted O. plebs possess approximately 20 times the relative photopigment amount of the crayfish. Absolute sensitivity of the eye of O. plebs is, therefore, expected to be very high.

Summary Experiments were carried out on the bioconcentration and biotransformation of 14C-hexachlorocyclohexane and 14C-hexachlorobenzene in the necrophagous Antarctic amphipod Orchomene plebs kept alive in the laboratory on ship board. A bioconcentration factor (BCF) of 2.84×104 for -HCH related to the lipid content has been found in O. plebs which is similar to factors found in invertebrates of temperate latitudes of boreal regions. A BCF for 14C-HCB could not be determined, because of incomplete dissolution of the compound under experimental conditions. Up to 5% of both compounds were transformed to more polar products which were not identified further. Sensitivity (chemoreception) to different amino acids was studied in six invertebrate species: Serolis polita, Glyptonotus antarcticus, Abyssochromene plebs, Waldeckia obesa, Odontaster validus, and Sterechinus neumayeri. The sensitivity was estimated by the changes in basic metabolism (respiration rate). Starvation increased the sensitivity in all the species. The metabolism rates increased in the presence of L-glutamic acid in G. antarcticus, A. plebs, O. validus, and St. neumayeri. The serine and arginine amino acids had a significant impact on the metabolism of the necrophagous species S. polita and W. obesa. The chemical information may be mediated by means of L-glutamic acid via glutamate receptors, which can be blocked by kynurenic acid, as occurs in the experiments with G. antarcticus and A. plebs.  相似文献

  1. Relative retinal amounts in the compound eye of the Antarctic amphipod Orchomene plebs were assessed during conditions of continuous summer daylight every 3 h over a period of 48 h. The habitat of the experimental animal is the bottom of the Ross Sea (78°S; 166°E) down to depths of at least 400 m; water temperature is a constant — 1.8° C. A periodicity of 12 h was detected with relative amounts of 11-cis retinal exhibiting peaks at midday and at midnight and troughs at 7.00 h and 19.00 h.
  2. The result that 90% of retinoid were insoluble in n-hexane suggests that at least 90% of the measured retinoid were attached to membrane-bound proteins such as opsin.
  3. Selective light adaptation showed that the visual pigments were thermostable and photoregenerable. The main absorbance peak of rhodopsin, compared with metarhodopsin, seems to be in the longer wavelengths.

Summary The amphipod, Orchomene plebs, and the isopod, Glyptonotus antarcticus, both adapted to live in seawater of a temperature of-2° to 0° C, were kept for 7h at the unphysiologically high temperature of +10° C. Temperature elevation appeared to mimic light adaptation with regard to the position of the screening pigment granules within the visual cells, but not with respect to ultrastructural changes in the microvillar array of the rhabdom, i.e. the visual membranes. Cellular metabolism, membranous fatty acid composition, and ion fluxes, all known to be readily affected by an increase in temperature, are thought to be responsible for the observed effects. Pigment granules could possibly cause an elevation of intracellular temperatures due to the fact that they are dark and dissipate absorbed energy as heat.  相似文献

Numerous individuals of the poorly known species Lecithostaphylus retroflexus (Zoogonidae) and Tergestia acanthocephala (Fellodistomidae) have been recovered from the teleost fish Belone belone gracilis from off the Scandola Nature Reserve, Western Mediterranean. They are redescribed, incorporating previously undescribed features: for L. retroflexus, a post-oral ring, a bipartite seminal vesicle, the shape of the excretory vesicle, the subterminal excretory pore and the flask-shaped gland-cells associated with the distinctly pedunculate ventral sucker; and for T. acanthocephala, the intestinal bifurcation in the forebody, necessitating its return to the genus Tergestia from Theledera. Additionally, T. acanthocephala is compared with T. laticollis from various species of Trachurus from the same geographical area.  相似文献

Abstract. The freshwater ostracod Tonnacypris glacialis (Sars, 1890) is reported from the European Pleistocene for the first time. The historical allocation of the species is discussed, and the species composition and characteristics of Tonnacypris Diebel & Pietrzeniuk (1975) and its phylozoogeography are considered. The significance of T. glacialis is reviewed, particularly from the viewpoint of the possible implications of parthenogenesis (and occasional-male production) for the Quaternary history of the genus, and for the use of the species in palaeoenvironmental reconstruction. It is suggested that the Pleistocene fossil occurrence of T. glacialis in modern temperature latitudes is a robust indicator of mean summer temperatures of 6°C.  相似文献

A new genus and species of notharctine primate, Hesperolemur actius, is described from Uintan (middle Eocene) aged rocks of San Diego County, California. Hesperolemur differs from all previously described adapiforms in having the anterior third of the ectotympanic anulus fused to the internal lateral wall of the auditory bulla. In this feature Hesperolemur superficially resembles extant cheirogaleids. Hesperolemur also differs from previously known adapiforms in lacking bony canals that transmit the internal carotid artery through the tympanic cavity. Hesperolemur, like the later occurring North American cercamoniine Mahgarita stevensi, appears to have lacked a stapedial artery. Evidence from newly discovered skulls of Notharctus and Smilodectes, along with Hesperolemur, Mahgarita, and Adapis, indicates that the tympanic arterial circulatory pattern of these adapiforms is characterized by stapedial arteries that are smaller than promontory arteries, a feature shared with extant tarsiers and anthropoids and one of the characteristics often used to support the existence of a haplorhine-strepsirhine dichotomy among extant primates. The existence of such a dichotomy among Eocene primates is not supported by any compelling evidence. Hesperolemur is the latest occurring notharctine primate known from North America and is the only notharctine represented among a relatively diverse primate fauna from southern California. The coastal lowlands of southern California presumably served as a refuge area for primates during the middle and later Eocene as climates deteriorated in the continental interior. The taxonomic status and validity of Scymnodon macracanthus (Regan, 1906) and Scymnodon plunketi (Waite, 1910) are revised in light of new material from the Southern Pacific and Indian Oceans. Despite being historically accepted as distinct taxa, recent studies suggested the possibility that these species could represent a single taxon. Morphometrics, meristics and morphology of dermal denticles show that S. plunketi is indeed a junior synonym of S. macracanthus. Previous distinctive characters proved to be the result of intraspecific variation. S. macracanthus is therefore redescribed including an updated comparative diagnosis for the genus Scymnodon in the family Somniosidae.  相似文献

Forty Klebsormidium strains isolated from soil crusts of mountain regions (Alps, 600–3,000 m elevation) were analyzed. The molecular phylogeny (internal transcribed spacer rDNA sequences) showed that these strains belong to clades B/C, D, E, and F. Seven main (K. flaccidum, K. elegans, K. crenulatum, K. dissectum, K. nitens, K. subtile, and K. fluitans) and four transitional morphotypes (K. cf. flaccidum, K. cf. nitens, K. cf. subtile, and K. cf. fluitans) were identified. Most strains belong to clade E, which includes isolates that prefer humid conditions. One representative of the xerophytic lineage (clade F) as well as few isolates characteristic of temperate conditions (clades B/C, D) were found. Most strains of clade E were isolated from low/middle elevations (<1,800 m above sea level; a.s.l.) in the pine‐forest zone. Strains of clades B/C, D, and F occurred sporadically at higher elevations (1,548–2,843 m a.s.l.), mostly under xerophytic conditions of alpine meadows. Comparison of the alpine Klebsormidium assemblage with data from other biogeographic regions indicated similarity with soil crusts/biofilms from terrestrial habitats in mixed forest in Western Europe, North America, and Asia, as well as walls of buildings in Western European cities. The alpine assemblage differed substantially from crusts from granite outcrops and sand dunes in Eastern Europe (Ukraine), and fundamentally from soil crusts in South African drylands. Epitypification of the known species K. flaccidum, K. crenulatum, K. subtile, K. nitens, K. dissectum, K. fluitans, K. mucosum, and K. elegans is proposed to establish taxonomic names and type material as an aid for practical studies on these algae, as well as for unambiguous identification of alpine strains. New combination Klebsormidium subtile (Kützing) Mikhailyuk, Glaser, Holzinger et Karsten comb. nov. is made.  相似文献

Monostephanostomum georgianum n. sp. is described from Arripis georgianus off Kangaroo Island, South Australia. It differs from its congeners by the presence of a short second row of oral spines. M. manteri Kruse, 1979 is reported from A. georgianus off southern Western Australia and Kangaroo Island, South Australia and A. trutta off northern Tasmania. It is considered that the other two species, M. yamagutii Ramadan, 1984 and M. krusei Reimer, 1983, should probably be removed from this genus. Two new combinations are formed, M. gazzae (Shen, 1990) n. comb. (from Stephanostomum) and M. mesospinosum (Madhavi, 1976) n. comb. (from Stephanostomum). A key to the four recognised species of Monostephanostomum is given.  相似文献

The rich rissooidean fauna of Balkan Peninsula, the history of which began at the time of Paratethys, is not sufficiently studied yet. It includes, among others, many taxa of minute gastropods with a moderately high-spired shell, a penis with a double lobe on its left edge and female reproductive organs with a loop of coiled oviduct and two receptacles, the morphology of which does not allow for a certain determination. In the article we deal with five such populations. We describe the shell, radula, soft part morphology and anatomy of the reproductive organs of Grossuana codreanui (Grossu, 1946) from its type locality at the Techirghiol Lake, Dobrogea, Romania. The species is compared molecularly (fragments of two genes: mitochondrial CO1 and ribosomal 18 S) with G. codreanui from Bulgaria, G. serbica (Radoman, 1973) from its type locality, Belgrandiella haesitans (Westerlund, 1881) from the spring of the Louros River, and Orientalina delphica (Radoman, 1973) from the spring Kastalia at Delphi. All the five populations were found to belong to the genus Grossuana: G. codreanui, G. serbica, G. vurliana (Radoman, 1966), and G. dephica (Radoman, 1973), respectively. We applied 12 morphological characters of Grossuana and 17 other rissooidean genera (mostly of the Hydrobiidae s. stricto) to infer phylogeny, which has shown the position of the genus within the Hydrobiidae s. stricto, most close to Orientalina. All the molecular data confirm that Grossuana is a distinct genus belonging to the Hydrobiidae, Horatiinae, whose closest relatives are Belgrandia, Orientalina and Horatia. Handling editor: C. The Himalayas are known to be a geologically young and dynamic mountain range hosting an endemic flora and fauna. To date, for freshwater crabs, one endemic subgenus within the genus Potamon, Potamon (Himalayapotamon) Pretzmann, 1966, has been described from the Himalayas. This subgenus includes two species, Potamon atkinsonianum (Wood-Mason, 1871) and Potamon emphysetum (Alcock, 1909). The taxonomic position of these two species is reconsidered. The subgenus Himalayapotamon is raised to generic level and its systematic and zoogeographic position is discussed. Based mainly on the morphology of the male copulatory system, Himalayapotamon belongs to the family Potamidae. It is more related to the Eurasian genus Potamon Savigny, and is distinct from the South-East Asian genus Potamiscus as well as from the Indian freshwater crabs of the family Gecarcinucidae. Zoogeographically Himalayapotamon appears to be an endemic genus related to Potamon, both genera presumably being isolated during the Miocene when the Gangetic waters were separated from the western Eurasian river systems. The aim of the present article was to contribute to the systematics of the leydigi-like species of Leydigia consisting of a few (probably 3) formal species with: (1) a large basal spine on the postabdominal claw (as long as claw thickness at the base); (2) a short setulation at anterior margin of labral keel; (3) no longitudinal striation on the female valves; (4) at least three lateral setae in each fascicle on the postabdomen; (5) three large lateral setae on exopodite III. The morphology of L. leydigi (Schoedler, 1863) and L. louisi Jenkin, 1934 are redescribed, and type material of L. macrodonta Sars, 1916 is studied. In contrast to previous suggestions (Jenkin, 1934; Smirnov, 1971), I found that: (1) L. louisi is a valid species, not a subspecies of L. macrodonta; (2) L. macrodonta is not a member of the L. leydigi-group. The third member of leydigi-group, Leydigia macrodonta longiseta Chen Shou-zhong, 1992, was described from China. It is not a subspecies of L. macrodonta, but a relative of L. leydigi; most probably, it is a valid species, but this opinion must to be confirmed by examination of original Asian material. In this article, the presence of L. leydigi in Palearctic only, and that of L. louisi in only Africa was confirmed. A new subspecies of L. louisi, found in Mexico, will be reported separately.  相似文献

Conformational analysis of triple helics of a type of collagen was performed with typical collagen tripeptide sequences based on Gly-Pro-Ala, Gly-Ala-Hyp, and Gly-Ala-Ala. During energy minimization, the possibility of continual deformation of the pyrrolidine cycle was taken into account in order to achieve better accuracy in the resulting structure. The (Gly-Pro-Ala)n structure is almost isomorphic to the (Gly-Pro-Hyp)n structure obtained in the previous work [Tumanyan, V. G. & Esipova, N.G. (1982) Biopolymers 21 , 475–497]. For a collagen-type structure, the optimal conformation of (Gly-Ala-Hyp)n tends to have a decreased unit twist (t = 15°), although the energy advantage with respect to the conformation with t = 45° is not so significant. A similar situation is observed for (Gly-Ala-Ala)n. In this case, the energy decrease during unwinding to t = 15° from t = 45° is quite small. The conformations of (Gly-Ala-Hyp)n and (Gly-Ala-Ala)n with t = 15° exhibit a similarity with a triple complex of polyproline II helices—a noncoiled coil such as (Gly-Pro-Hyp)n and (Gly-Pro-Ala)n. A similar structure may be postulated for subcomponent cq1 of the first component of a human complement containing substantial Gly-X-Pro and Gly-X-Y tripeptide derivatives in the primary structure (X, Y = any amino acid). The results suggest that the observed helical symmetry of collagen (t = 36°) is a consequence of superposition of diffraction patterns (for sufficiently long segments) from various helices (t varies from ~15° for Gly-X-Hyp and Gly-X-Y to ~56° for Gly-Pro-Ala). For short alternating segments, some unification of different helical structures is possible.  相似文献

The macaque material from the Early Pleistocene site of Quibas (Albanilla, Murcia, Spain), including dentognathic remains, isolated teeth and some postcranial bone fragments, is described. Both metrically and morphologically, this sample must be attributed to Macaca sylvanus (the Barbary macaque). This species is currently distributed through North Africa and Gibraltar, but was much more widely distributed during the Plio-Pleistocene, being represented by several European fossil subspecies. Metrical comparisons of dental size and proportions between extant M. s. sylvanus and fossil Macaca sylvanus florentina from the type locality and other Italian sites are undertaken, in order to classify the remains from Quibas at the subspecies level. The results show that the Quibas sample not only fits the range of variation of M. s. florentina from the type locality, but also differs from the extant Barbary macaque condition in several regards. This permits us to formally attribute the material from Quibas to M. s. florentina. The material described in this paper therefore significantly improves the knowledge of this fossil taxon, particularly regarding the upper dentition, and further confirms the taxonomic distinctiveness of this extinct taxon at the subspecies rank. Taken as a whole, M. s. florentina largely overlaps in dental dimensions with M. s. sylvanus, but differs from the latter by displaying (on average): (1) absolutely longer upper molars (especially M1 and M3); (2) relatively wider upper molars (especially M1 and M2); (3) longer M3 as compared with the M2; (4) absolutely longer M1 and M3; and (5) relatively narrower M3.  相似文献
