Summary

The paper reports demographic studies of the endemic Cerastium nigrescens and the very rare Arenaria norvegica ssp. norvegica on the Keen of Hamar ultramafic outcrop on Unst, Shetland from June 1994 to November 1996. Plants of Cerastium nigrescens showed a Deevey type II curve and mature plants had a half-life of 3.8 years. Plants of Arenaria norvegica ssp. norvegica showed a Deevey type I curve with high mortality after flowering in the second year. There was some evidence of increased mortality during droughts but this had little impact on the total population. Seed production and seedling recruitment for both species was good throughout the study period. Seed bank measurements ranged from 12–13 m2 for Cerastium nigrescens and 24–43 m-2 for Arenaria norvegica ssp. norvegica. The study showed that there was no immediate threat to the populations of the two species but because of their isolated occurrence they are susceptible to extinction and should be carefully monitored.  相似文献

The euphausiid, Meganyctiphanes norvegica (M. Sars), has an extremely wide distribution around the North Atlantic, from Canada to the Arctic to the western Mediterranean. It appears to be adaptable to life under quite different oceanographic conditions, yet no morphological features have been identified that distinguish any of the populations occurring in different areas between which exchange must be supposed to be restricted. The genetic, physiological, behavioural and ecological investigations that are being carried out on M. norvegica in the Kattegat, the Clyde Sea area and the Ligurian Sea (the EU MAST III PEP Project) in order to study its adaptability must be closely related to the physical environment within which the respective populations occur. This paper presents a summary of the hydrographic conditions found in the Kattegat and the Clyde Sea area in summer and in winter, during each research cruise, and places them in the context of current understanding of the hydrography in each area. An account of the hydrography of the Ligurian Sea is in preparation (Dallot et al., in preparation). The data will be used in the further analysis of genetic, physiological and behavioural adaptability of M. norvegica, and will be available for use as appropriate to supplement other hydrographic studies in the regions concerned. Several studies have proved that some Dinophysis species are capable of ingesting particulate organic matter besides of being photosynthetic, a form of nutrition termed mixotrophy. Phagotrophy may be an important aspect of the life history of the genus Dinophysis and the key to understand its ecology. We used modern techniques coupling flow cytometry and acidotropic probes to detect and score food vacuolated Dinophysis norvegica cells in natural samples. In addition, feeding experiments were conduced under controlled conditions to observe if D. norvegica would grow feeding on the cryptophyte Teleaulax amphioxeia. The results of the field observations showed a frequency of phagotrophy between 25 and 71% in a natural D. norvegica population from the Baltic Sea, which is higher than previous reports (1–20%). Although molecular methods have proved that the kleptoplastids of the D. norvegica from the Baltic Sea are from T. amphioxeia, the laboratory experiments showed that the presence of T. amphioxeia in the cultures did not enhance the survival rate of D. norvegica neither in phototrophic nor in heterotrophic conditions. We suggest that the D. norvegica Kleptoplats are obtained through a heterotrophic or mixotrophic protist, which have been feeding on cryptophytes, as it has recently been shown for Dinophysis acuminata. Our main conclusion is that D. norvegica, and probably all other species from the genus Dinophysis, is mainly phagotrophic and feeds on a larger prey than T. amphioxeia. Autotrophy through kleptoplastidy would be a secondary feature used as a complementary or short-term survival strategy.  相似文献

Passiflora tacanensis, a new species from southern Mexico, is described and illustrated. It was discovered during the course of a taxonomic revision ofPassiflora subgenusDecaloba supersectionCieca and is assigned to that group of apetalous passion flowers.Passiflora tacanensis is known only from one fruiting herbarium specimen that was collected in southern Mexico on Volcán Tacaná in a high mesophytic forest. It is distinguished from its closest relatives,P. coriacea, P. sexocellata, P. mcvaughiana, andP. xiikzodz, by its foliose stipules, leaves that lack laminar nectaries but possess petiolar nectaries, and wide seeds with a chalazal beak that is not well developed.  相似文献

On the family Brassicaceae, the causal agent responsible for downy mildew disease was originally regarded as a single species, Peronospora parasitica (now under Hyaloperonospora), but it was recently reconsidered to consist of many distinct species. In this study, 11 specimens of Peronospora drabae and P. norvegica parasitic on the genus Draba were investigated morphologically and molecularly. Pronounced differences in conidial sizes (P. drabae: 14–20 × 12.5–15.5 μm; P. norvegica: 20–29 × 15.5–22 μm) and 7.8% sequence distance between their ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 rDNA sequences confirmed their status as distinct species. Based on ITS phylogeny and morphology (monopodially branching conidiophores, flexuous to sigmoid ultimate branchlets, hyaline conidia and lobate haustoria), the two species unequivocally belong to the genus Hyaloperonospora and not to Peronospora to which they were previously assigned. Therefore, two new combinations, Hyaloperonospora drabae and H. norvegica, are proposed. The two taxa are illustrated and compared using the type specimen for H. norvegica and authentic specimens for H. drabae, which is lectotypified.  相似文献

Bioluminescence of euphausiids takes place when a fluorescent tetrapyrrole F and a highly unstable protein P react in the presence of oxygen. A previous study on the euphausiid Meganyctiphanes norvegica indicated that F acts as a catalyst and P is consumed in the luminescence reaction, differing from the luminescence system of dinoflagellates in which a tetrapyrrole luciferin, nearly identical to F, is enzymatically oxidized in the presence of dinoflagellate luciferase. In the present study, P was extracted from Euphausia pacifica as well as from M. norvegica, then purified separately by affinity chromatography on a column of biliverdin–Sepharose 4B, completing the whole process in less than 5h. The samples of P obtained from both species had a molecular weight of 600,000, a purity of about 80%, and a specific activity 50–100 times greater than that previously found. The activity of P rapidly decreased in solutions, even at 0°C, and the inactivation of P derived from M. norvegica was more than four times faster than that derived from E. pacifica. The kinetics of the luminescence reaction was investigated with F and P whose concentrations were systematically varied. The reaction was characteristically slow and involved two different reaction rates; the turnover number at 0°C was 30/h for the initial 20 min and 20/h after the initial 1 h. The total light emitted in a 50-h period indicated that the bioluminescence quantum yield of F was about 0.6 at 0°C, and P recycled many times in the luminescence reaction. Thus, the present results conclusively show that F is a luciferin and P is a luciferase of an unusually slow-working type, contrary to early report.  相似文献

Reproductive strategies of the four congeneric and sympatric calanoid copepods Paraeuchaeta glacialis, P. norvegica, P. barbata, and P. polaris were studied in the Arctic Greenland Sea. Females of all species produce egg sacs and carry their brood attached to the genital opening until the offspring hatch. However, egg size and lipid content as well as clutch size and the fraction of females carrying egg masses show characteristic differences among the four species. P. glacialis and P. norvegica produce large numbers (37 to more than 50) of relatively small eggs, whereas P. barbata and P. polaris rely on small numbers (10 to 19 and 4 to 6, respectively) of large eggs with a high energy content. There is no correlation between female body size and egg size or clutch size, respectively. Females of the smallest species, P. polaris, produce relatively large eggs and show the highest energetic investment per egg. In contrast, energetic investment per clutch is highest in P. glacialis. Reproductive adaptations appear to be strongly related to the depth range inhabited by the respective species. In the central Greenland Sea P. glacialis and P. norvegica occur in the epipelagial and upper mesopelagial, whereas the other two species inhabit lower mesopelagic to bathypelagic depths. Thus, egg size increases with depth of occurrence, whereas clutch size is inversely correlated with depth. This observation leads to the hypothesis that the evolution of large eggs in deep-sea copepods may enable hatchlings to rely on a lecithotrophic development and thus represents a successful adaptation to cope with the limited food supply at great depths, whereas high offspring numbers in epipelagic species compensate for higher predation risks in the euphotic zone.Communicated by H.-D. In situ growth rates of the toxin-producing dinoflagellate Dinophysis norvegica collected in the central Baltic Sea were estimated during the summers of 1998 and 1999. Flow cytometric measurements of the DNA cell cycle of D. norvegica yielded specific growth rates (μ) ranging between 0.1 and 0.4 per day, with the highest growth rates in stratified populations situated at 15–20 m depth. Carbon uptake rates, measured using 14C incubations followed by single-cell isolation, at irradiances corresponding to depths of maximum cell abundance were sufficient to sustain growth rates of 0.1–0.2 per day. The reason for D. norvegica accumulation in the thermocline, commonly at 15–20 m depth, is thus enigmatic. Comparison of depth distributions of cells with nutrient profiles suggests that one reason could be to sequester nutrients. Measurements of single-cell nutrient status of D. norvegica, using nuclear microanalysis, revealed severe deficiency of both nitrogen and phosphorus as compared to the Redfield ratio. It is also possible that suitable prey or substrate for mixotrophic feeding is accumulating in the thermocline. The fraction of cells containing digestive vacuoles ranged from 2 to 22% in the studied populations. Infection by the parasitic dinoflagellate Amoebophrya sp. was observed in D. norvegica in all samples analysed. The frequency of infected cells ranged from 1 to 3% of the population as diel averages, ranging from 0.2 to 6% between individual samples. No temporal trends in infection frequency were detected. Estimated loss rates based on observed infection frequencies were 0.5–2% of the D. norvegica population daily, suggesting that these parasites were not a major loss factor for D. norvegica during the periods of study.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The freshwater snail Pseudosuccinea columella was recorded for the first time in Argentina more than 60 years ago. Since then its distribution in the wild has been restricted to the northeastern provinces. Here we record the presence of P. columella in southern Pampas for the first time, extending its distribution more than 500?km southwards. The climatic suitability of this and other areas of South America for its establishment and spread was analysed using habitat modelling software. Hitherto its spread within and between watercourses in southern Pampas has been very limited, probably through a combination of low climatic suitability, recent introduction and low connectivity of the drainage basins. The suitability of other areas where it has been recently recorded indicates a moderate risk of further spread in central and northwestern Argentina and in coastal areas of the Pacific rim of South America (southern Perú and northern Chile). The recent spread of P. columella in the wild in Argentina may be the result of an increase in the trade in aquarium plants or of the evolution of a new lineage with different ecological capabilities.  相似文献

The feeding strategies of two large marine copepods   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We compared the feeding behaviour of the two copepods Paraeuchaetanorvegica and Chiridius armatus, allowing them to prey on othercalanoids in small-scale laboratory experiments. Several differenceswere found. When fed either live, free-swimming or dead, non-movingprey, P.norvegica seemed unable to locate the dead prey itemswhile C.armatus foraged heavily on them. When starved, P.norvegicaincreased its feeding rate while C.armatus reduced its feedingafter an initial increase. None of the predators changed theirfeeding rates when exposed to light. Nighttime versus daytimefeeding was tested only with P.norvegcia, which seemed to possessan endogenous feeding rhythm with increased rates at night.Chiridius armatus infected with epizooic ciliates appeared tohave increased feeding rates.  相似文献

Abstract

Investigation of European Ulola bruchii Hornsch. ex Brid., U. crispa (Hedw.) Brid. and U. crispula Brid. shows that U. crispula is merely a small form of U. crispa and cannot be maintained as a distinct taxon. Intergradation between U. bruchii and U. crispa is such that U. bruchii is reduced to a variety, U. crispa var. norvegica (Grönv.) A. J. E. Smith &; M. O. Hill.  相似文献

Abstract

Sections of the stems and leaf sheaths of North American, European and Asiatic specimens of Timmia austriaca, T. megapolitana and T. norvegica were examined microscopically to discover useful discriminatory characters for identification purposes. The presence or absence of stereids in the sheathing part of the nerve appears to be a valuable taxonomic character for use in determining otherwise doubtful or unidentifiable sterile material of the sections Timmia (stereids present) and Timmiaurea (stereids absent). Similarly, the presence of a continuously thickened layer on the adaxial side of the sheathing lamina appears to be distinctive for T. norvegica. The characteristics of the stem seem to be of no taxonomic importance.  相似文献

Abstract

Using sequences from the central and 3' regions of the mitchondrial small subunit (12S) ri‐bosomal RNA gene for six procellariiform species, this study confirms that the population of Pelecanoides georgicus on Whenua Hou (Codfish Island), New Zealand, is most closely related to P. georgicus from the southern Indian Ocean. The level of variation between sequences for this conserved gene suggests that the isolated Whenua Hou P. georgicus population split off from populations in the Indian Ocean several hundred thousand years ago. Although P. georgicus is globally numerous, the Whenua Hou population is endangered. As our preliminary sequence data suggest that the Whenua Hou population may have diverged from its parent population, it may deserve recognition in its own right.  相似文献

Four new species ofPiptadenia are described:P. anolidurus (from Amazonian Ecuador, Peru and Brazil),P. buchtienii (from trans-Andean Bolivia),P. cuzcoënsis (from southern Peru), andP. imatacae (from Venezuelan Guayana); andP. adiantoides var.peruviana J. F. Macbr. is raised in rank toP. peruviana. In relation toP. imatacae the transfer ofP. uaupensis Benth. andP. floribunda Kleinhoonte toAdenopodia Presl is shown to be ill-advised. The affinities of each new species are discussed and critical characters are illustrated.Mimosa tessmanii Harms is newly synonymized withP. uaupensis.

Feeding strategies of copepods were studied during a dinoflagellate-dominated bloom in the North Sea in August 2001. The aim of this study was to evaluate the importance of mesozooplankton grazing as a biological loss factor of harmful algal blooms under natural conditions. Therefore, ingestion, egestion and egg production experiments were performed with the most abundant copepod species Calanus helgolandicus, Temora longicornis and Acartia sp. feeding on the natural phytoplankton community. Dinophysis norvegica and Ceratium furca were the most abundant dinoflagellate species at the time of the experiments. Grazing experiments as well as examination of fecal pellet content revealed C. helgolandicus fed efficiently on D. norvegica. Ingestion rates up to 47 cells female−1 h−1 were measured and a large proportion of the C. helgolandicus fecal pellets contained intact D. norvegica cells. Dinophysis cells were rarely seen in fecal pellets produced by T. longicornis, and never observed in pellets produced by Acartia sp. The ingestion rate of C. furca, which was the dominating Ceratium species, mimicked that of D. norvegica. C. helgolandicus grazed significantly on C. furca (16 cells female−1 h−1), while the ingestion rate of T. longicornis was low and Acartia sp. was not able to graze on C. furca. Egg production experiments revealed that 92% of the C. helgolandicus females produced eggs. The specific egg production rate and the proportion of females producing eggs among T. longicornis were low. This field experiment clearly shows that some copepod species feed efficiently on D. norvegica and C. furca under natural conditions, which may affect the bloom development of these dinoflagellates.  相似文献

Summary

Freshwater crabs (Potamonautes perlatus) are the largest naturally occurring invertebrates in southern African rivers. The ecology of these animals in South African riverine ecosystems is little understood. This study investigates some aspects of the population and feeding ecology of P. perlatus in the upper reaches of the Buffalo River. The densities of crabs (carapace width larger than 25 mm) at two sites in the river ranged between 1.72 and 5.25 crabs m2, higher than previously recorded for freshwater crabs in rivers in southern Africa and southern Italy. Twenty-four hour observations revealed that P. perlatus has a nocturnal habit. The diet of P. perlatus was established by examination of the contents of the fore-gut. Crabs with a carapace width smaller than 40 mm fed predominantly on aquatic invertebrates while larger crabs fed on allochthanous material (leaf litter), detritus and algae. Through feeding, crabs reduced the surface area of leaves in the stream by 99.95%.  相似文献

Summary

The relationship between the Rhum ultrabasic skeletal soils and their debris vegetation was investigated by plant analyses and field and laboratory experiments. Samples of Agrostis vinealis, Arenaria norvegica ssp norvegica, Calluna vulgaris, Festuca vivipara, Plantago maritima and Racomitrium lanuginosum from these soils usually had low concentrations of potassium and calcium, and high concentrations of sodium, magnesium (and high Mg/Ca quotients), iron and nickel. There were instances of very high iron concentrations (up to 22.4mg g?1 in Plantago maritima), very high Mg/Ca quotients (up to 27.8 in Arenaria novegica spp. norvegica) and high nickel concentrations (up to 0.48mg g?1 in Plantago maritima). A nutrient addition experiment which was set up in 1965 on an exposed barren area had in 1982 over twice as many species as originally recorded and a nearly complete plant cover. Shorter-term work has confirmed that nutrient availability limits the ultrabasic vegetation. An experiment on Agrostis vinealis in simulated soil solutions showed that a gabbro (non-ultrabasic) clone had a higher R.G.R. (relative growth rate), even at the higher of two experimental Mg/Ca quotients, than two peridotite (ultrabasic) clones and was moreover not significantly affected by the higher nickel concentration used. It is concluded that the low vegetation cover on the skeletal soils is maintained by low soil nutrients which might interact with the coarsely sandy texture in exacerbating the effects of periodic drought and frost heaving. There is no unequivocal evidence for plant toxicities associated with high magnesium or nickel in the Rhum soils.  相似文献
