The recent expansion of a variety of morphometric tools has brought about a revolution in the comparison of morphology in the context of the size and shape in various fields including entomology. First, an overview of the theoretical issues of geometric morphometrics is presented with a caution about the usage of traditional morphometric measurements. Second, focus is then placed on two broad approaches as tools for geometric morphometrics; that is, the landmark‐based and the outline‐based approaches. A brief outline of the two methodologies is provided with some important cautions. The increasing trend of entomological studies in using the procedures of geometric morphometrics is then summarized. Finally, information is provided on useful toolkits such as computer software as well as codes and packages of the R statistical software that could be used in geometric morphometrics. 相似文献

Invasive species often exhibit either evolved or plastic adaptations in response to spatially varying environmental conditions. We investigated whether evolved or plastic adaptation was driving variation in shell morphology among invasive populations of the New Zealand mud snail (Potamopyrgus antipodarum) in the western United States. We found that invasive populations exhibit considerable shell shape variation and inhabit a variety of flow velocity habitats. We investigated the importance of evolution and plasticity by examining variation in shell morphological traits 1) between the parental and F1 generations for each population and 2) among populations of the first lab generation (F1) in a common garden, full‐sib design using Canonical Variate Analyses (CVA). We compared the F1 generation to the parental lineages and found significant differences in overall shell shape indicating a plastic response. However, when examining differences among the F1 populations, we found that they maintained among‐population shell shape differences, indicating a genetic response. The F1 generation exhibited a smaller shell morph more suited to the low‐flow common garden environment within a single generation. Our results suggest that phenotypic plasticity in conjunction with evolution may be driving variation in shell morphology of this widespread invasive snail. 相似文献

Further geometric morphometric analysis on the genus Eysarcoris (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) from China
Further geometric morphometric analysis of the genus Eysarcoris was done based on the former studies to classified the nine Eysarcoris species from China. In this study, six characters, such as forewing, hindwing, pygophore, head, pronotum and scutellum, were selected to investigate the shape variation of Eysarcoris.Significant divergence in the shapes of the six characters was observed among the species (p < 0.05).For all methods, phenetic similarity based on the six characters agrees with the current status of the genus. The cluster analysis of eight species are consistent with the traditional morphological studies.CVA analysis also shows that the values of the six characters are not equal in taxonomy.Pygophore, forewing, hindwing and pronotum play more important roles in the classification. 相似文献

A geometric morphometric analysis was conducted on wing‐vein landmarks on exemplar species of the family Simuliidae of the following genera: Parasimulium, Gymnopais, Twinnia, Helodon, Prosimulium, Greniera, Stegopterna, Tlalocomyia, Cnephia, Ectemnia, Metacnephia, Austrosimulium, and Simulium. Generalized least squares superimposition was performed on landmarks, followed by a principal component analysis on resulting Procrustes distances. Patterns of shape change along the principal component axes were visualized using the thin‐plate spline. The analysis revealed wing shape diversity through (1) the insertion points of the subcosta and R1, resulting in the terminus of the costa exhibiting a trend towards a more apical position on the wing, and (2) the insertion point of the humeral cross vein, resulting in the anterior branch of the media exhibiting a trend toward a more basal position on the wing. Canonical variates analysis of Procrustes distances successfully assigned all exemplar species into their a priori taxonomic groupings. The diversity in wing shape reveals a trend towards decreased length of basal radial cell and increased costalization of anterior wing veins in the evolutionary transition from plesiomorphic prosimuliines to more derived simuliines. The functional significance of these evolutionary transitions is discussed. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London 相似文献

Geometric morphometric techniques allow for the direct quantification and analysis of variation in biological shape and have been used in studies in systematic biology. However, these techniques have not been used for species discrimination in the gastropod genus Conus, a major taxon of significant tropical reef predators recognized for their peptide‐based toxins. Here, we used landmark digitization and analysis to show that five species commonly studied for their conotoxins –Conus consors, Conus miles, Conus stercusmuscarum, Conus striatus, and Conus textile – can be effectively distinguished from each other by their shape, as manifested in the results of a principal components analysis (PCA) and the generated thin‐plate splines. Two piscivorous species, C. stercusmuscarum and C. striatus, show clear overlaps in the PCA plot, although each taxon clusters within itself, as does each of the others. The loadings on the first two principal components show that the forms of the shells' aperture and spire are particularly important for discrimination. Phylogenetic analysis using neighbour‐joining methods shows that group separations are comparable with published phylogenetic schemes based on molecular data and feeding mode (i.e. piscivory, vermivory, molluscivory). The results of this study establish the utility of geometric morphometric methods in capturing the interspecific differences in shell form in the genus Conus. This may lead to the utilization of these methods on other gastropod taxa and the creation of species‐recognition programs based on shell shape. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 165 , 296–310. 相似文献

A suite of measurements was collected from the talus, calcaneus, navicular, and cuboid of humans from Southern China, Victorian Britain, Roman Britain, and Zulu tribes people from the Republic of South Africa. Univariate and multivariate statistical analyses of dimensions of individual foot bones revealed subtle but distinct patterns of morphological discrimination on the basis of sex and size on the one hand, and geographical relationships on the other. These differences are largely expressed in the first three canonical variates of the multivariate analyses: the first axis expresses both sex and size differences, and the second and third, geographical group differences. Confirmation of morphological patterns obtained from individual multivariate analyses was provided by an integrated analysis of the four tarsal elements together. However, the integrated analysis also gave larger separations with discriminations along different axes. Thus the three geographical groups (Zulus, Southern Chinese, and the two British groups together) were separated by first and third variates. The discrimination of sex and size differences was found in the second axis, mirroring what was found in the first axes of the individual studies. This axis reversal implies that in examining all bones together, there is enough redundant information about sex and size in each individual bone that they are relegated to a second axis. It likewise implies that the data referring to geographic discriminations provided by each individual bone are not redundant; they sum in the integrated analysis, and therefore contribute to the overall analysis to a greater extent, with increased clarity. 相似文献

Variation in leaves and petals was studied using canonical variate and cluster analyseS. In total of 33 populations from eight islands leaf variation in laminar, floating leaves was studied in Ranunculus peltatus subsp. peltatus, subsp. baudotii and subsp. saniculifolius, and in R. Tripartitus, all of which are heterophyllous in the Aegean area. The petal data set also included the homophyllous R. Trichophyllus. The results of the analyses show that the populations are morphologically well differentiated and that petal shape has a tendency to discriminate between the populations somewhat better than leaf shape does. There was no basis for subdividing the populations into taxa on these characterS. Analyses showed that up to 70% of the variation was distributed between populations, the remainder (5–18%) being within populations. 相似文献

Ecological and evolutionary consequences of the trophic polymorphism in Cichlasoma citrinellum (Pisces: Cichlidae) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The neotropical cichlid fish Cichlasoma citrinellum is polymorphic in the structure of its pharyngeal jaw apparatus and external morphology. The pharyngeal jaws are either gracile and bear slender, pointed teeth (papilliform) or robust with strong, rounded teeth (molariform). Molariform morphs have a ‘benthic’, and papilliform morphs a ‘limnetic’ body form. Furthermore, this species is also polychromatic, with yellow and black morphs. The molariform morphology of the pharyngeal jaw apparatus adapts the fish for cracking and feeding on snails. Based on analysis of stomach contents, 94% of the molariform morph ate snails whereas only 19%, of the papilliform morph did so. This result suggests that the morphs occupy different ecological niches. The morphology of the pharyngeal jaw apparatus does not correlate significantly with sex, but it does with body colouration (P<0.005). Cichlasoma citrinellum mate assortatively with their own colour; therefore a mating preference for colour may lead to genetic isolation of trophic morphs. The frequency of the molariform morph differs strikingly among populations of five Nicaraguan lakes and its abundance is correlated with the abundance of snails, the fishes' principal prey item. Among populations the frequency of molariform morphs decreases in the dry season. Morphology possibly changes reversibly within particular individuals between seasons. These results suggest that phenotypic plasticity and polymorphisms may be an adaptive characteristic of cichlid fishes. Patterns of intraspecific morphological variation match patterns of interspecific morphological diversification which suggests that universal developmental mechanisms canalize the possible expressions of morphology. The ability to respond morphologically to environmental shifts, in conjunction with genetically determined trophic polymorphisms and sexual selection via mate choice, could be the basis for speciation through intermediate stages of polymorphism of the impressive adaptive radiation of cichlid fishes. 相似文献

Theory predicts that organisms living in heterogeneous environmentswill exhibit phenotypic plasticity. One trait that may be particularlyimportant in this context is the clutch or brood size becauseit is simultaneously a maternal and offspring characteristic. In this paper, I test the hypothesis that the burying beetle,Nicrophorus orbicollis, adjusts brood size, in part, in anticipationof the reproductive environment of its adult offspring. N. orbicollisuse a small vertebrate carcass as a food resource for theiryoung. Both parents provide parental care and actively regulatebrood size through filial cannibalism. The result is a positivecorrelation between brood size and carcass size. Adult bodysize is an important determinant of reproductive success forboth sexes, but only at higher population densities. I testthree predictions generated by the hypothesis that beetles adjustbrood size in response to population density. First, averageadult body size should vary positively with population density.Second, brood size on a given-sized carcass should be larger(producing more but smaller young) in low-density populationsthan in high-density populations. Third, females should respondadaptively to changes in local population density by producinglarger broods when population density is low and small broodswhen population density is high. All three predictions weresupported using a combination of field and laboratory experiments. These results (1) show that brood size is a phenotypically plastictrait and (2) support the idea that brood size decisions arean intergenerational phenomenon that varies with the anticipatedcompetitive environment of the offspring. 相似文献

Appropriate sampling effort is crucial for ecologists. Procrustes analysis can be used to tackle this question by quantifying the match between subsamples and the complete dataset. We used stream macroinvertebrates to show how sampling design can be optimized by reducing the number of subsamples and increasing the number of sites. 相似文献

To date, the forcipules have played almost no role in determining the systematics of scutigeromorph centipedes though in his 1974 review of taxonomic characters Markus Würmli suggested some potentially informative variation might be found in these structures. Geometric morphometric analyses were used to evaluate Würmli's suggestion, specifically to determine whether the shape of the forcipular coxa contains information useful for diagnosing species. The geometry of the coxae of eight species from the genera Sphendononema, Scutigera, Dendrothereua, Thereuonema, Thereuopoda, Thereuopodina, Allothereua and Parascutigera was characterised using a combination of landmark- and semi-landmark-based sampling methods to summarize group-specific morphological variation. Canonical variates analysis of shape data characterizing the forcipular coxae indicates that these structures differ significantly between taxa at various systematic levels. Models calculated for the canonical variates space facilitate identification of the main shape differences between genera, including overall length/width, curvature of the external coxal margin, and the extent to which the coxofemoral condyle projects laterally. Jackknifed discriminant function analysis demonstrates that forcipular coxal training-set specimens were assigned to correct species in 61% of cases on average, the most accurate assignments being those of Parascutigera (Parascutigera guttata) and Thereuonema (Thereuonema microstoma). The geographically widespread species Thereuopoda longicornis, Sphendononema guildingii, Scutigera coleoptrata, and Dendrothereua linceci exhibit the least diagnostic coxae in our dataset. Thereuopoda longicornis populations sampled from different parts of East and Southeast Asia were significantly discriminated from each other, suggesting that, in this case, extensive synonymy may be obscuring diagnosable inter-species coxal shape differences. 相似文献

We examined the evolutionary and developmental responses of body size to temperature in Drosophila melanogaster, using replicated lines of flies that had been allowed to evolve for 5 yr at 25°C or at 16.5°C. Development and evolution at the lower temperature both resulted in higher thorax length and wing area. The evolutionary effect of temperature on wing area was entirely a consequence of an increase in cell area. The developmental response was mainly attributable to an increase in cell area, with a small effect on cell number in males. Given its similarity to the evolutionary response, the increase in body size and cell size resulting from development at low temperature may be a case of adaptive phenotypic plasticity. The pattern of plasticity did not evolve in response to temperature for any of the traits. The selective advantage of the evolutionary and developmental responses to temperature is obscure and remains a major challenge for future work. 相似文献

Two major intraspecific patterns of adult size variation are plastic temperature‐size (T‐S) responses and latitude‐size (L‐S) clines. Yet, the degree to which these co‐vary and share explanatory mechanisms has not been systematically evaluated. We present the largest quantitative comparison of these gradients to date, and find that their direction and magnitude co‐vary among 12 arthropod orders (r2 = 0.72). Body size in aquatic species generally reduces with both warming and decreasing latitude, whereas terrestrial species have much reduced and even opposite gradients. These patterns support the prediction that oxygen limitation is a major controlling factor in water, but not in air. Furthermore, voltinism explains much of the variation in T‐S and L‐S patterns in terrestrial but not aquatic species. While body size decreases with warming and with decreasing latitude in multivoltine terrestrial arthropods, size increases on average in univoltine species, consistent with predictions from size vs. season‐length trade‐offs. 相似文献

Intraspecific variation in egg size and hatching size, and the genetic and environmental trade‐offs that contribute to variation, are the basis of the evolution of life histories. The present study examined both univariate and multivariate temperature‐mediated plasticity of life‐history traits, as well as temperature‐mediated trade‐offs in egg size and clutch size, in two planktotrophic species of marine slipper limpets, Crepidula. Previous work with two species of Crepidula with large eggs and lecithotrophic development has shown a significant effect of temperature on egg size and hatching size. To further examine the effect of temperature on egg size in Crepidula, the effects of temperature on egg size and hatching size, as well as the possible trade‐offs with other the life‐history features, were examined for two planktotrophic species: Crepidula incurva and Crepidula cf. marginalis. Field‐collected juveniles were raised at 23 or 28 °C and egg size, hatching size, capsules/brood, eggs/capsule, time to hatch, interbrood interval, and final body weight were recorded. Consistent with results for the lecithotrophic Crepidula, egg size and hatching size decreased with temperature in the planktotrophic species. The affects of maternal identity and individual brood account for more than half of the intraspecific variation in egg size and hatching size. Temperature also showed a significant effect on reproductive rate, with time to hatch and interbrood interval both decreasing with increasing temperature. However, temperature had contrasting effects on the number of offspring. Crepidula cf. marginalis has significantly more eggs/capsule and therefore more eggs per brood at 28 °C compared to 23 °C, although capsules/brood did not vary with temperature. Crepidula incurva, on the other hand, produced significantly more capsules/brood and more eggs per brood at the lower temperature, whereas the number of eggs/capsule did not vary with temperature. The phenotypic variance–covariance matrix of life‐history variables showed a greater response to temperature in C. incurva than in C. cf. marginalis, and temperature induced trade‐offs between offspring size and number differ between the species. These differences suggest that temperature changes as a result of seasonal upwelling along the coast of Panama will effect the reproduction and evolution of life histories of these two co‐occurring species differently. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, ?? , ??–??. 相似文献

Among individuals of female three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus from a population in the Camargue, southern France, studied in 12 successive years, adult L T ranged from 31–64 mm, clutch size ranged from 33–660 eggs, and mean egg diameter per clutch ranged from 1.15–1.67 mm. Because the population was strictly annual, inter-annual variation corresponded to variation among generations having experienced different environmental conditions. Body mass varied significantly among years, suggesting an effect of varying environmental conditions. Gonad mass and clutch size increased with body mass, but mean egg diameter was not correlated to body mass. Body mass-adjusted gonad mass, interpreted as reproductive effort per clutch, did not vary significantly among years, suggesting that this trait was not influenced by environmental conditions. Body mass-adjusted clutch size and egg size varied significantly among years. Inter-annual variation in body length at breeding, clutch size and egg size was of the same order of magnitude as inter-population variation reported by other authors for this species. During the breeding season, reproductive effort and clutch size tended to increase. Egg size tended to decrease during the breeding season but this seasonal pattern varied among years. Observed life-history variation is discussed both in terms of its evolutionary significance and methodological implications in the study of life-history variation among populations. 相似文献

Sexual size dimorphism (SSD) is often affected by environmental conditions, but the effect of temperature on SSD in ectotherms still requires rigorous investigation. We compared the plastic responses of size-at-maturity to temperature between males and females within 85 diverse arthropod species, in which individuals of both sexes were reared through ontogeny under identical conditions with excess food. We find that the sexes show similar relative (proportional) temperature–body size (T–S) responses on average. The high degree of similarity occurs despite an analysis that includes a wide range of animal body sizes, variation in degree of SSD and differences in the sign of the T–S response. We find no support for Rensch''s rule, which predicts greater variation in male size, or indeed the reverse, greater female size variation. SSD shows no systematic temperature dependence in any of the 17 arthropod orders examined, five of which (Diptera, Orthoptera, Lepidoptera, Coleoptera and Calanoida) include more than six thermal responses. We suggest that the same proportional T–S response may generally have equivalent fitness costs and benefits in both sexes. This contrasts with effects of juvenile density, and food quantity/quality, which commonly result in greater size plasticity in females, suggesting these variables have different adaptive effects on SSD. 相似文献

The frequency of litter overlap, the simultaneous presence of two litters at different stages of development within a single female, varies among populations of Gambusia hubbsi in different habitats on Andros, Bahamas. In freshwater bluehole and shallow water populations, less than 2% of the females carried two litters, independent of the difference in developmental stage between the litters. In well field populations, 2% of the females carried two litters composed of immature and mature oocytes, whereas 10% carried developing oocytes and late stage embryos, and 16% carried mature oocytes (or older) and late stage embryos. Among females from populations that we introduced into unoccupied well fields 2% carried two litters composed of immature and mature oocytes, about 14% carried developing oocytes and late stage embryos, and less than 6% carried mature oocytes (or older) and late stage embryos. When two litters composed developing oocytes and late stage embryos were present, the two litters were of equal size, and the total number of offspring was 1.5 times larger than expected on the basis of female body length. When two litters composed mature oocytes (or older stages) and late stage embryos were present, the two litters were also of equal size, and the total number of offspring was as expected on the basis of female body length. Litter overlap was independent of female size. A comparison of the consequences of litter overlap for strictly lecithotrophic and strictly matrotrophic modes of reproduction with the patterns of litter overlap observed in G. hubbsi, suggests that litter overlap in G. hubbsi reduces the cost of reproduction, but does not increase the rate of offspring production. 相似文献
