Age and growth of Scorpaena notata from the northern Adriatic Sea were investigated by annual growth increment counts (annuli). Overall, age and growth were estimated from 538 specimens of S. notata ranging between 47 and 199 mm TL. No clear sexual dimorphism in size was observed. Annual deposition of annuli and location of the first annulus have been validated by edge analysis and daily growth increment counts, respectively. The estimated age range was between 0?C16 years for female and 0?C14 years for males. The estimated values of Von Bertalanffy asymptotic length $ {{\text{L}}_{\infty }} $ (cm) and k (years?1) were 16.3 and 0.46 for males and 15.6 and 0.35 for females. Thus, males of S. notata appeared to attain a slightly larger size at faster rate than females. The growth performance index ranged between 1.9 and 2.1, which is in the middle of the range observed in other scorpaenids. Comparing ageing data of S. notata with other Mediterranean scorpaenids, a direct relationship between fish size and growth performance was observed.  相似文献

本实验在室外网箱内监测辽河水系中华绒螯蟹(Eriocheir sinensis)幼蟹阶段个体生长发育的每一次蜕壳生长情况。2013年实验选取雄蟹和雌蟹各200只,记录了每个蜕壳阶段雌蟹和雄蟹的生长,包括壳长、壳宽、总重和蜕壳间隔时长(d),并且观察雌蟹和雄蟹形态特征的变化。实验共进行111 d,幼蟹共蜕壳11次。实验结束时,雄蟹剩余34只,雌蟹剩余42只;雄蟹的特定生长率为(7.176 5±0.168 4)%/d,雌蟹的特定生长率为(7.283 3±0.174 3)%/d;雌蟹生长蜕壳过程中腹部的形态变化大,腹部由三角形变成卵圆形;雄蟹在生长蜕壳过程中螯足的增长明显较雌蟹快,并且在本实验最后一次即第11次蜕壳后螯足腹面内侧出现1小撮绒毛,外侧也出现少量绒毛,但不易被发现。  相似文献

Juvenile and adult growth of Chasmagnathus granulatus was studied in the laboratory in terms of molt increment in size (MI) and the intermolt period (IP), comparing data obtained from short‐term (STE) and long‐term (LTE) laboratory experiments. Crabs in a pre‐molt condition were collected for STE, including the entire size range of the species. Larger crabs remained in the laboratory no more than 14 days; the average time to molt was 5.8 ± 3.1 days. We registered the molt of 94 females, 64 males and 34 undifferentiated juveniles and calculated their MI. Moreover, 24 males and four females were reared in the laboratory over 3 years (LTE). Hiatt diagrams did not show sex‐specific differences between juveniles of both sexes, but revealed differences between juveniles and adults in each sex as well as between adults of both sexes. The MI decreased gradually with size; this pattern was described with a quadratic model. The IP increased exponentially with size. The presence of regenerating limbs diminished the MI. The abdomen of females reached its final shape and maximum relative width at functional maturity. Growth curves for both sexes were calculated using the von Bertalanffy model, but this model yielded an underestimation of the actual maximum size of this crab.  相似文献

Organisms ranging from paramecia to humans tend to explore places that have been least recently explored, which is referred to as spontaneous alternation. Although organisms rely on different sources of information in alternating between places, the emergent behavioral pattern is likely advantageous during exploration and foraging. Under this rationale, continuous spontaneous alternation performance of the invasive green crab, Carcinus maenas was assessed and compared with the native blue crab, Callinectes sapidus in a plus-maze submerged in seawater. For the first time spontaneous alternation behavior was demonstrated in Crustacea (i.e., C. maenas) and significant interspecific differences in alternation performance were observed between the invasive versus the native species. Carcinus maneas exhibited a pronouncedly higher spontaneous alternation performance than C. sapidus. Carcinus maneas on average alternated at levels higher than chance, which was not the case for C. sapidus. These observations point to an additional behavioral mechanism that might result in the competitive success of green crabs over blue crabs in areas where they co-occur. Most of the subjects exhibited asymptotic alternation performance from the onset; there was no improvement in their performance over the course of the experimental session. Bering Sea snow crabs (Chionoecetes opilio) are a commerciallyimportant crab harvested in the Bering Sea. Optimal managementof this species requires an understanding of the biology ofthis crab that is currently incomplete. Fisheries managers applya continuous growth model in their management of snow crab,which assumes that male crabs increase in size throughout theirlifespan. Male snow crabs undergo a morphometric molt that leadsto a disproportionate increase in chelae size and it is stilldebated whether this molt is associated with a terminal molt.This study was conducted to determine whether adult male C.opilio are anecdysic. Using current knowledge of the hormonalregulation of crustacean growth, snow crab physiology was manipulatedto induce an increase in molting hormones (ecdysteroids). Sincefemale snow crabs are known to undergo a terminal molt afterattaining reproductive maturity, we compared ecdysteroid levelsin eyestalk-ablated terminally molted females, small-clawedmales and large-clawed males. Snow crabs were collected fromthe Bering Sea and maintained in circulating seawater at approximately6°C. Animals were either eyestalk-ablated or left intact.Ecdysteroid levels in hemolymph were quantified using an enzyme-linkedimmunosorbant assay (ELISA). Circulating ecdysteroids were significantlyhigher in small-clawed male crabs when compared to large-clawedmales or terminally molted females. Eyestalk-ablation increasedcirculating ecdysteroids in small-clawed males, but had no significanteffect on circulating ecdysteroids in large-clawed males orin terminally molted females.  相似文献

Invasive non-native crustaceans are a biodiversity and management concern in the Mediterranean Sea. The Atlantic blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) was first recorded in the Mediterranean Sea in 1949, but may have arrived as early as in the 1930’s. Blue crabs in the Mediterranean Sea are of concern due to their presumed potential for negative consumptive and competitive interactions with native fauna. The aim of this study was to provide a first assessment of the trophic ecology of non-native blue crab in the Northern Aegean Sea using stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen isotope (δ15N) analysis. We found limited isotopic niche overlap between blue crabs and seven native species examined at Gökçeada Island in April, June, and August of 2017. In addition, the range of calculated trophic positions of blue crabs at Gökçeada Island (2.0 to 4.4), while broad, is in general agreement with prior studies in both native and non-native ranges. We also observe that trophic position declined and the relative importance of pelagic carbon sources to blue crabs increased from April to August. However, we also found that differing assumptions as to the number and type of food web baselines and trophic discrimination factors led to differing estimates of trophic position in blue crabs at Gökçeada Island by as much as one to two trophic levels. These methodical differences make it challenging to directly compare results within and between studies, and thus limit our ability to assess negative consumptive and competitive interactions of invasive blue crab with native coastal species in the Mediterranean Sea.

The paper describes phenological and aerobiological monitoring conducted during 6 years on a potato crop. The progression of the phenological stages in relation with thermal time [growing degree-days (GDD) and physiological days (P-days)] was analyzed. The growing cycle for Kennebec variety required less than 120 days and mean values of 1700 GDD and 720 P-days to complete the phenological development. The presence of Phytophthora infestans in the environment was common in each crop cycle, but the maximum peaks of sporangia were detected a few days after the emergence of the plants. The growing cycles with lower maximum temperature had the highest presence of sporangia. Thus, significant negative correlations between mean temperature, maximum temperature, accumulated growing degree-days, accumulated physiological days and the concentration of P. infestans in the environment were found. Maximum temperature and accumulated growing degree-days of 5 previous days were the parameters that best estimated the P. Infestans concentration in the regression model applied, with an explained variance of the data of 33 and 34%.  相似文献

The Atlantic rock crab, Cancer irroratus, is a commercially fished species and a critical prey item for the American lobster, Homarus americanus, in Atlantic Canada. The recent invasion of European green crab, Carcinus maenas, may have significant effects on the growth and condition of native C. irroratus, because both species overlap spatially and temporally and have similar habitat and dietary requirements. To examine such potential effects, we measured the growth of juvenile C. irroratus in the presence of juvenile C. maenas over a period of 4 months (growing season), under the following species combinations: (1) one C. irroratus (10-25 mm CW); (2) two C. irroratus (10-25 mm CW); (3) one C. irroratus (10-25 mm CW) and one C. maenas (10-15 mm CW). Morphological measurements included pre- and post-molt carapace width, chela height, abdomen width (mm), weight (g), and estimates of molt increment (%) and intermolt duration (days). Analysis of the hepatopancreas for % lipid content at the end of the experiment provided an estimate of physiological condition. The effect of the presence of C. maenas on the growth of C. irroratus shifted from negative to positive, when C. irroratus reached CW of 19-22 mm and gained a presumably significant size advantage over C. maenas. The positive effect resulted from increased energy intake through crab consumption. In the absence of crab consumption, the presence of a second crab (conspecific or C. maenas) had no effect on growth. C. irroratus consumed crabs more frequently when the second individual was a green crab than a conspecific. Consumption of C. maenas had a pronounced effect on the growth rate of C. irroratus, resulting in shorter intermolt periods and larger percent molt increments than in the presence of a conspecific. Therefore, the presence of juvenile C. maenas does not appear to have a prolonged negative effect on the growth of C. irroratus; rather, it may provide an additional food item as rock crabs grow, as long as encounters between the two species occur at high enough rates.  相似文献

Three kinds of diet were used to identify the critical periods of nutritional vulnerability during larval development of the portunid crab, Callinectes sapidus Rathbun. A diet consisting solely of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis Müller is not sufficient for complete developmetn. Development to metamorphosis can occur if rotifers are replaced by Day 15 with Artemia salina L. nauplii, but a diet of A. salina between Days 15 and 21 is also not sufficient for complete development. Delay in giving a brine shrimp diet beyond Day 15 causes a reduction in survival to the megalopa with an apparent threshold between Days 22 and 29, delay in molting in late instars, and increased frequency of supernumeracy larvae, many of which molt subsequently to the megalopa. Development to the megalopa on the rotifer diet is possible if crab larvae are initially fed a favorable control diet for as little as 14 days after hatching. Extension of time on the control increases survival to the megalopa slightly, has little effect on molt frequency, but reduces the number of zoeal instars.These data are interpreted in the context of identification of the unknown dietary requirement and for its implication to evolution of reproduction in the Brachyura.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to examine temperature-dependent development, diapause and cold tolerance of Gratiana graminea Klug (Chrysomelidae), a candidate biological control agent of tropical soda apple, Solanum viarum Dunal (Solanaceae). Immature development was examined at six constant temperatures ranging from 15°C to 30°C. Diapause induction was determined by exposing adults to either long or short photoperiods at 20°C and cold tolerance was assessed by exposing adults to 0°C. G. graminea completed development at temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C. Linear regression estimated a lower temperature threshold of 11.7°C and 312 degree-days were required to complete development. Diapause was induced when adults were exposed to short photoperiods (10:14 L:D h) at 20°C. The lethal times for diapausing adults of G. graminea at 0°C (LT50?=?19?days, LT90?=?41?days) were two times higher compared to Gratiana boliviana Spaeth, a biological control agent already established in south and central Florida, USA. The presence of diapause and the greater cold tolerance suggest that G. graminea may establish and perform better than G. boliviana in northern Florida.  相似文献

The eastern Mediterranean is a hotspot of biological invasions. Numerous species of Indo-pacific origin have colonized the Mediterranean in recent times, including tropical symbiont-bearing foraminifera. Among these is the species Pararotalia calcariformata. Unlike other invasive foraminifera, this species was discovered only two decades ago and is restricted to the eastern Mediterranean coast. Combining ecological, genetic and physiological observations, we attempt to explain the recent invasion of this species in the Mediterranean Sea. Using morphological and genetic data, we confirm the species attribution to P. calcariformata McCulloch 1977 and identify its symbionts as a consortium of diatom species dominated by Minutocellus polymorphus. We document photosynthetic activity of its endosymbionts using Pulse Amplitude Modulated Fluorometry and test the effects of elevated temperatures on growth rates of asexual offspring. The culturing of asexual offspring for 120 days shows a 30-day period of rapid growth followed by a period of slower growth. A subsequent 48-day temperature sensitivity experiment indicates a similar developmental pathway and high growth rate at 28°C, whereas an almost complete inhibition of growth was observed at 20°C and 35°C. This indicates that the offspring of this species may have lower tolerance to cold temperatures than what would be expected for species native to the Mediterranean. We expand this hypothesis by applying a Species Distribution Model (SDM) based on modern occurrences in the Mediterranean using three environmental variables: irradiance, turbidity and yearly minimum temperature. The model reproduces the observed restricted distribution and indicates that the range of the species will drastically expand westwards under future global change scenarios. We conclude that P. calcariformata established a population in the Levant because of the recent warming in the region. In line with observations from other groups of organisms, our results indicate that continued warming of the eastern Mediterranean will facilitate the invasion of more tropical marine taxa into the Mediterranean, disturbing local biodiversity and ecosystem structure.  相似文献

Pasteuria penetrans is a promising biological control agent of plant-parasitic nematodes. This study was conducted to determine effects of temperature on the bacterium''s development in Meloidogyne arenaria. Developmental stages of P. penetrans were viewed with a compound microscope and verified with scanning electron microscopy within each nematode at 100 accumulated degree-day intervals by tracking accumulated degree-days at three temperatures (21, 28, and 35 °C). Five predominant developmental stages of P. penetrans were identified with light microscopy: endospore germination, vegetative growth, differentiation, sporulation, and maturation. Mature endospores were detected at 28, 35, and >90 calendar days at 35, 28, and 21 °C, respectively. The number of accumulated degree-days required for P. penetrans to reach a specific developmental stage was different for each temperature. Differences were observed in the development of P. penetrans at 21, 28, and 35 °C based on regression values fitted for data from 100 to 600 accumulated degree-days. A linear response was observed between 100 to 600 accumulated degree-days; however, after 600 accumulated degree-days the rate of development of P. penetrans leveled off at 21 and 28 °C, whereas at 35 °C the rate decreased. Results suggest that accumulated degree-days may be useful only in predicting early-developmental stages of P. penetrans.  相似文献

From a respiratory and metabolic standpoint, a blue crab isin an extremely precarious condition during a molt. A molt isphysiologically possible for two major reasons. First, a premoltalkalosis anticipates the acidosis that arises during actualexuviation when the gas exchanger and ventilatory appendageare impaired and thus anaerobic metabolism must be activated.Second, the crab is able to revert to more primitive forms ofskeletal support and, immediately after exuviation, gas exchange.These mechanisms are very fragile, however, as are the cardiovascularmechanisms that provide the force for exuviation; any one mayfail. Changes in various enzyme activities and in free aminoacid content of the tissues, which are usually associated withosmotic challenges, are associated specifically with a moltas well. Shellfish allergy is a major cause of food-induced anaphylaxis, but the allergens are not well characterized. This study examined the effects of heating on blue swimmer crab (Portunus pelagicus) allergens in comparison with those of black tiger prawn (Penaeus monodon) by testing reactivity with shellfish-allergic subjects'' serum IgE. Cooked extracts of both species showed markedly increased IgE reactivity by ELISA and immunoblotting, and clinical relevance of IgE reactivity was confirmed by basophil activation tests. Inhibition IgE ELISA and immunoblotting demonstrated cross-reactivity between the crab and prawn extracts, predominantly due to tropomyosin, but crab-specific IgE-reactivity was also observed. The major blue swimmer crab allergen tropomyosin, Por p 1, was cloned and sequenced, showing strong homology with tropomyosin of other crustacean species but also sequence variation within known and predicted linear IgE epitopes. These findings will advance more reliable diagnosis and management of potentially severe food allergy due to crustaceans.  相似文献

 The objectives of this paper are to: (1) present 10 years of phenological data for nine natural species growing in a Mediterranean-type climate, (2) present threshold temperatures that were derived for the computation of cumulative degree-days (CDD), and (3) evaluate the sensitivity of the nine natural species to weather variability. The study was conducted at the Phenological Research Garden of Oristano, Sardinia, Italy, during the period 1986–96. The observations were made on five typical Mediterranean species and four species that are typical of higher latitudes. The mean annual pattern of phenological events and the CDD from 1 January are given for each development stage. Temperature thresholds were evaluated by comparing the standard deviation about the mean number of days in the development period for each species. A good relationship between timing of phenophase occurrence and temperature was observed for the Mediterranean species, which were little affected by variations in rainfall. The mermithid nematode, Filipjevimermis leipsandra, was successfully cultivated to the preadult stage in Schneider''s Drosophila medium supplemented with 20% fetal bovine serum. Upon transfer to a solid substrate the preadults continued to develop into ovipositing adult females. Four molts were observed. The first molt occurred in the egg. The second occurred after 6-8 days in culture during which the very thin cuticle was shed completely. The third molt occurred after 18-20 days in culture; the cuticle was retained by the third-stage nematode. This stage was considered comparable to the preadult stage that emerges from host larva, Diabrotica spp. The fourth molt occurred within 12 days after the preadult was transferred from the liquid medium to a solid substrate. Adult females began ovipositing viable eggs 1-3 days after the final molt.  相似文献

The profiles of circulating ecdysteroids during the three molt cycles prior to adulthood were monitored from the juvenile blue crab, Callinectes sapidus. Ecdysteroid patterns are remarkably similar in terms of peak concentrations ranging between 210–330 ng/ml hemolymph. Analysis of hemolymph at late premolt stage revealed six different types of ecdysteroids with ponasterone A (PoA) and 20‐OH ecdysone (20‐OH E) as the major forms. This ecdysteroid profile was consistent in all three molt cycles. Bilateral eyestalk ablation (EA) is a procedure that removes inhibitory neurohormones including crustacean hyperglycemic hormone (CHH) and molt‐inhibiting hormone (MIH) and often results in precocious molting in crustaceans. However, the inhibitory roles of these neuropeptides in vivo have not yet been tested in C. sapidus. We determined the regulatory roles of CHH and MIH in the circulating ecdysteroid from ablated animals through daily injection. A daily administration of purified native CHH and MIH at physiological concentration maintained intermolt levels of ecdysteroids in the EA animals. This suggests that Y organs (YO) require a brief exposure to CHH and MIH in order to maintain the low level of ecdysteroids. Compared to intact animals, the EA crabs did not exhibit the level of peak ecdysteroids, and the major ecdysteroid turned out to be 20‐OH E, not PoA. These results further underscore the important actions of MIH and CHH in ecdysteroidogenesis, as they not only inhibit, but also control the composition of output of the YO activity. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Open field experiments with the blowfly, Calliphora vicina originating from the environs of St. Petersburg showed that the correlation between the rate of its preimaginal development under the natural conditions and the mean daily temperature could be very closely approximated by linear regression. The sum of effective temperatures required for development from the egg to the puparium constituted ca 140 degree-days and from the egg to the adult, ca 320 degree-days with the lower thresholds of 5.8 and 4.8°C, respectively. The minimum duration of development (6–8 days from the egg to the puparium and 16–20 days from the egg to the adult) was recorded during the period of the highest mean temperatures (22–23°C) from July 8 to August 15 of 2010 and 2011. The rate of development under natural thermorhythms was not siggnificantly different from that under the laboratory conditions at constant temperatures from 12 to 23°C.  相似文献

An outbreak of the nemertean, Carcinonemertes epialti, was observed on Hemigrapsus oregonensis during October, 1982 at Campbell Cove, Bodega Harbor, California. Mean worm intensity (296 worms/crab) was the highest recorded for this nemertean egg predator on H. oregonensis. During the outbreak, male crabs were found to harbor more worms than both non-ovigerous and ovigerous females. Crab egg mortality was substantial; 83% of the ovigerous females experienced 75–100% brood mortality. The seasonal peak in worm abundance coincided with the seasonal low in crab reproduction at this locality. A method for estimating the impact of C. epialti on H. oregonensis natality was developed using crab size and fecundity, and worm prevalence and intensity. For a non-outbreak sampling period, a mean of 5.6% egg mortality was experienced by infested crabs for the period selected. Thus, brood mortality during the outbreak was much greater than that experienced at non-outbreak periods. Heavy fishing pressure on some commercially important crab species has been suggested as a possible factor inducing worm outbreaks and facilitating their continued persistence. These observations suggest that fisheries are not necessarily responsible for the outbreaks of nemerteans on commercially important crab species. However, fishing pressure may still be a sufficient condition to promote nemertean outbreaks.  相似文献
