The North American spiny-cheek crayfish,Orconectes limosus (Cambaridae), endangered in its native range, is a widespread invasive species in European waters and conservationally important carrier of crayfish plague. However, its population structure is poorly known, and no informative genetic markers for the species are available. We tested cross-species transfer of microsatellite loci to spiny-cheek crayfish from 5 other crayfish species. Variability of 10 successfully amplifying loci derived from 4 species was then tested in 60 individuals ofO. limosus originating from 3 natural populations: the river Danube at Bogyiszló in Hungary, a pond in Stary Klíčov, and the brook Černovicky, both in the Czech Republic. The allele number within the populations ranged from 4 to 10 alleles per locus, while heterozygosity levels varied from 0.650 to 0.900 forHo and from 0.660 to 0.890 forHe. No linkage disequilibrium and no null alleles were detected. The selected markers are useful for assessing population structure, intraspecific variation, and paternity studies in spiny-cheek crayfish.  相似文献

Invasion is one of the most consequential phenomena affecting the distribution of native species. Few in number of species, European crayfish are losing the competition with introduced North American crayfish. The spiny-cheek crayfish, Orconectes limosus, is an outstanding example, successfully competing against the native narrow-clawed crayfish, Astacus leptodactylus. For four years, we collected data regarding crayfish occurrences, their relative abundance, and the structure of populations in the ongoing colonisation process of O. limosus in the lower Danube. The mature females of both invasive and indigenous crayfish species were analysed with respect to biometry and production of oocytes in relation to the dynamics of invasion. The interspecific comparisons showed no significant differences regarding body size, with an average of approximately 102 mm total length and 31 g wet weight for both species. However, the fecundity of the indigenous species was found to be constant throughout the investigated area, whereas the number of eggs produced by the invasive females was significantly increased at the active front of the invasion. The maximum number of ovarian eggs found was 887 and 1156 in the indigenous species and the invasive species, respectively. We propose the scenario that the invasive species, which carries the deadly crayfish plague, creates an ecological advantage by reducing the populations of indigenous crayfish. Subsequently, the invasive females opportunistically use the available resources to enhance their fecundity, resulting in the acute growth of populations. However, the long-term competitiveness and colonisation success of O. limosus still remain in question.  相似文献

Juvenile noble crayfish, Astacus astacus and spiny-cheek crayfish, Orconectes limosus were reared from the 2nd and the 3rd developmental stage (i.e. since the stage of independence), respectively, until the end of the growing season. The first period revealed very low survival rate of O. limosus in the communal stock (7 ± 6.2%), probably caused by predation of A. astacus. Separately reared O. limosus proved significantly higher survival rate (49 ± 9.2%) than those in the communal stock with A. astacus. The latter species also showed the highest survival rate in this case (90 ± 7.1%). This was not found to differ from the survival rate of separately reared noble crayfish (86 ± 3.1%). In general, both the significant effect of bigger size of A. astacus than that of O. limosus and higher intra-specific cannibalism of O. limosus were reflected during the first phase of rearing. Size and weight of both species were equivalent 11 weeks after hatching (8 weeks of rearing). The higher cumulative survival rate was reached in the intraspecific culture of A. astacus (90%) while low cumulative survival of both species was found in communal stock (less than 50%) in the second phase of rearing. At the end of the growing season, 19-week-old O. limosus attained a higher mean size and weight but were more variable in the group (29.3 ± 5.17 mm and 616.4 ± 412.53 mg) than A. astacus (21.2 ± 1.82 mm and 229.9 ± 59.45 mg). Single and communal stock did not differ. Growth of O. limosus was much faster than that of A. astacus.  相似文献

The oomycete Aphanomyces astaci causes mass mortalities of European crayfish. Different species of North American crayfish, original hosts of this parasite, seem to carry different strains of A. astaci. So far, four distinct genotype groups have been recognised using Random Amplification of Polymorphic DNA (RAPD-PCR). We succeeded in isolating A. astaci from the spiny-cheek crayfish Orconectes limosus, a widespread invader in Europe, and confirmed that this species carries a novel A. astaci genotype. Improving knowledge on the diversity of this parasite may facilitate identification of genotypes in mass mortalities of European crayfish, thus tracing the sources of infection.  相似文献

  1. In novel communities, a rising number of new and emerging invasive species interact with resident species, some of which are non-native themselves. We implemented an innovative trophic interaction framework for novel communities and quantified the interaction strength and impact potential of a truly novel species (marbled crayfish Procambarus virginalis) with a resident non-native counterpart (spiny-cheek crayfish Faxonius limosus). As prey, we used Dreissena mussels, which are non-native as well and now hold a key position in many European and North American aquatic ecosystems.
  2. For both crayfish species, we predicted functional responses based on a mechanistic model that we parameterised with a set of experimental observations of foraging behaviour and satiation. We compared these predicted functional responses to empirically observed responses. In addition, we incorporated behavioural traits such as aggression, activity, and boldness in the comparisons between the species and individuals to determine their influence on functional responses. We tested individuals from aquarium stocks as well as naturalised individuals from invaded water bodies.
  3. Altogether, we performed 1,095 experiments with 26 individual crayfish. We found that per capita predation of spiny-cheek crayfish exceeded that of marbled crayfish from aquaria and naturalised individuals. Functional responses differed between species and were mostly higher for spiny-cheek crayfish males. Marbled crayfish, however, were more voracious and reached satiation more slowly. Consumption rates correlated with aggression for marbled crayfish and with an aggressive threat response for spiny-cheek crayfish.
  4. We conclude that spiny-cheek crayfish can reach higher short-term consumption rates than marbled crayfish, but both species probably do not substantially affect Dreissena mussel populations in the field. For marbled crayfish, high long-term consumption, interspecific aggression, and reproduction rates can promote their establishment and spread. Risk assessments of these invaders should be improved by considering numerical responses, and different prey organisms and predators.

The degradation of aquatic habitats has increasingly become one of the most important factors influencing the distribution of freshwater species worldwide. We analysed the occurrence of three crayfish species, Astacus astacus, Austropotamobius torrentium and Orconectes limosus, in relation to habitat degradation status (based on Directive 2000/60/ES), stream morphology, geographical characteristics and land cover. In total, we analysed 6,768 sites within the Czech Republic (Central Europe), of which 6,187 sites lacked crayfish; among the remainder, A. astacus was present in 507 sites, O. limosus occurred in 44 sites and A. torrentium was present in only 30 sites. The analysis revealed that A. astacus preferred streams of better water quality that were not surrounded by agricultural land or settlements. This species also preferentially occurred in smaller streams with stony bottom substrata that were located at higher altitudes. Austropotamobius torrentium occurrence was associated with the natural character of the water body and the presence of protected areas at higher altitudes. Conversely, the non-native crayfish species O. limosus was typically recorded at lower altitudes in downstream reaches surrounded by agricultural land and with deteriorated water quality. The degree of environmental (human) pressure besides differences in habitat characteristics at sites with ICS and NICS may be of general importance for conservation strategies aimed at central European native crayfish species, primarily because the habitat-driven co-occurrence pattern (and its possible changes in the future) may strongly influence interspecific relationships, such as direct competition and the spread of infectious diseases between crayfish species.  相似文献

Orconectes limosus, a North American crayfish species, is one of the most important aquatic invaders in European inland waters. Despite more than 120 years occurrence in Europe and intense research, there are still gaps in knowledge of its life history and ecology. Investigation into O. limosus invasive success requires identifying the mechanisms that enabled them to establish dense and widespread populations from small initial numbers without observable limitation by an introduction bottleneck. In part, O. limosus success may lie in its ability to reproduce by facultative parthenogenesis. Moreover, there are possible other mating scenarios, because of two mating seasons (autumn and spring) in O. limosus. This work investigated the effect of four reproductive scenarios (autumn mating only, spring mating only, autumn and spring mating, and without mating) on the reproductive success of O. limosus. Females successfully reproduced in all tested mating regimes using parthenogenesis as well as log term sperm storage. This reproductive plasticity likely facilitates the overwhelming success of O. limosus spread and establishment in new localities. It can explain the spread of O. limosus from the initial introduction of 90 specimens to most of continental Europe and Great Britain. These conclusions imply a serious threat, not only for autochthonous European astacofauna, but for other aquatic organisms as well as entire ecosystems.  相似文献

Recent increases in biological invasions frequency may have important consequences on native communities. However, functional redundancy between invasive and native species could reduce non-native species effects on native ecosystems. Despite this, even small differences in functional traits between these species may still have unpredictable effects on colonized ecosystems. Invasive crayfish, as ecosystem engineers, potentially have wide and complex effects on recipient ecosystems, even when replacing a native counterpart. We used laboratory microcosms to test whether native (Astacus astacus) and invasive crayfish species (Orconectes limosus, Pacifastacus leniusculus and Procambarus clarkii) are actually functionally redundant in their effects on prey/shredder density and leaf litter breakdown. Results show that crayfish strongly influenced macroinvertebrate numbers and leaf litter breakdown and indicate that differences in direct (prey and leaf litter consumption) and indirect (prey habitat use and leaf litter breakdown) effects between crayfish species do exist. While the replacement of A. astacus by O. limosus may have induced only minor changes in freshwater ecosystems, invasions by the larger and more aggressive P. clarkii and P. leniusculus will likely have strong effects on invaded ecosystem. Overall, there seems to be no functional redundancy between these four species and outcomes of crayfish invasion will likely be species specific.  相似文献

Threat of non-native crayfish introductions into Turkey: global lessons   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Introductions of crayfish species from their home range to new environments have been carried out in many parts of the world. The most important introduced crayfish species are Procambarus clarkii, Pacifastacus leniusculus, Cherax destructor, C. quadricarinatus, Orconectes limosus, O. rusticus and Astacus leptodactylus. The environmental impact of crayfish introductions can be positive, negative or neutral. However, native crayfish populations in Europe have been negatively affected by introductions of non-indigenous crayfish species from America. Negative effects of non-native crayfish introductions included displacement of native crayfish species, transfer of disease (crayfish plague), consumption of fish eggs, reduction of fish stocks, consumption of large amounts of macrophytes, indirect and direct effects on other invertebrates and upsetting production in rice fields. As a result of non-native crayfish introductions, the natural harvest and crayfish industry in Europe have been severely affected. Large quantities of Turkish A. leptodactylus were harvested (approximately 7,000 tonnes annually) and exported to Europe before the crayfish plague was observed in these populations. The total harvest of A. leptodactylus in Turkey reduced dramatically to 320 in 1991 after the plague. Therefore, although Turkey currently has no known non-native crayfish species, there is a threat of non-native crayfish introduction in order to increase crayfish productions and subsequent harvest. The North American spiny-cheek crayfish, O. limosus, has been spreading quickly down the River Danube and could soon reach neighboring countries including Turkey. The North American signal crayfish, P. leniusculus is known from Greece and could be a threat to native stocks if it is introduced into Turkey for aquaculture. Additional threats may come from the release of other North American species, which are widely available through the aquarium trade. We conclude that the spread of non-native crayfish introductions throughout Turkey will increase local problems, because introductions of non-native crayfish in many parts of the world have been known to have caused important reductions in population density and numbers of native crayfish species. Furthermore, freshwater ecosystems may be altered by such introductions and the economic viability of native crayfish species fisheries could be severely reduced in Turkey.  相似文献

We present a study of the hemolymph vascular system of the marbled crayfish, Procambarus fallax f. virginalis, the only crayfish species known to be parthenogenetic. To identify potential evolutionary patterns, we compared data from a total of 48 specimens of P. fallax with 22 specimens of Orconectes limosus. Visualizations (2D and 3D) were carried out using a combination of classical and modern morphological techniques. Our data were compared to the existing literature.Like all Decapoda, both P. fallax and O. limosus have a hemolymph vascular system, consisting of a globular heart with seven off-branching arteries. We were able to visualize in detail the heart of crayfish for the first time, i.e., the myocard with its clusters of muscles running through the lumen of the heart, the valves and flaps of ostia and arteries. Furthermore, the branching patterns of the seven artery systems were analyzed. Anatomical structures identified to be consistent in all specimens of both species were combined as ground pattern of hemolymph vascular system features for Astacida.  相似文献

Aphanomyces astaci, the crayfish plague pathogen, first appeared in Europe in the mid-19th century and is still responsible for mass mortalities of native European crayfish. The spread of this parasite across the continent is especially facilitated by invasive North American crayfish species that serve as its reservoir. In France, multiple cases of native crayfish mortalities have been suggested to be connected with the presence of the signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus, which is highly abundant in the country. It shares similar habitats as the native white-clawed crayfish Austropotamobius pallipes and, when infected, the signal crayfish might therefore easily transmit the pathogen to the native species. We investigated the prevalence of A. astaci in French signal crayfish populations to evaluate the danger they represent to local populations of native crayfish. Over 500 individuals of Pacifastacus leniusculus from 45 French populations were analysed, plus several additional individuals of other non-indigenous crayfish species Orconectes limosus, O. immunis and Procambarus clarkii. Altogether, 20% of analysed signal crayfish tested positive for Aphanomyces astaci, and the pathogen was detected in more than half of the studied populations. Local prevalence varied significantly, ranging from 0% up to 80%, but wide confidence intervals suggest that the number of populations infected by A. astaci may be even higher than our results show. Analysis of several individuals of other introduced species revealed infections among two of these, O. immunis and P. clarkii. Our results confirm that the widespread signal crayfish serves as a key reservoir of Aphanomyces astaci in France and therefore represents a serious danger to native crayfish species, especially the white-clawed crayfish. The prevalence in other non-indigenous crayfish should also be investigated as they likely contribute to pathogen transmission in the country.  相似文献

  1. Fish carcass decomposition can generate fluxes of nutrients to the water column at levels comparable to other major nutrient sources. However, relatively little is known about the biological processes modulating fish decay or the rates at which carcass-bound nutrients are made available to the biota.
  2. This study focused on quantifying scavenger-mediated phosphorus (P) recycling, because the availability of this essential element can regulate the trophic state of aquatic ecosystems.
  3. To explore the role of some important macroscopic aquatic scavengers in P recycling, laboratory experiments were conducted where carcasses of two fish species (common bleak Alburnus alburnus; pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus) were offered to two size classes of black bullhead (Ameiurus melas) and two crustacean species (spiny-cheek crayfish Faxonius limosus; narrow-clawed crayfish Astacus leptodactylus).
  4. Our results show that the black bullhead and the two crayfish species are highly efficient macroscopic decomposers as the P contents of scavenged carcasses were reduced at significantly higher rates compared to those of microbially decomposed (control) carcasses.
  5. Pumpkinseed carcasses proved to be more resistant to rapid decomposition, as they typically lost lower proportions of their P content than bleak carcasses during the course of the experiments.
  6. Scavengers sequestered a relatively large fraction (up to 33% in black bullhead and 36% in crayfish) of total carcass P in their bodies. This suggests that the consumer species used in this study can transfer/return considerable quantities of carcass-derived nutrients directly to higher trophic levels incorporated into their own tissues, and may serve as an additional, short-term sink of these nutrients.

1. I tested the hypothesis that the potential for non‐lethal effects of predators are more important for overall performance of the fast‐growing exotic signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus Dana) than for the slower growing native noble crayfish (Astacus astacus L.). I further tested if omnivorous crayfish switched to feed on less risky food sources in the presence of predators, a behaviour that could reduce the feeding costs associated with predator avoidance. 2. In a 2 month long outdoor pool experiment, I measured behaviour, survival, cheliped loss, growth, and food consumption in juvenile noble or signal crayfish in pools with either a caged predatory dragonfly larvae (Aeshna sp.), a planktivorous fish that do not feed on crayfish (sunbleak, Leucaspius delineatus Heckel), or predator‐free controls. Crayfish had access to multiple food sources: live zooplankton, detritus and periphyton. Frozen chironomid larvae were also supplied ad libitum outside crayfish refuges, simulating food in a risky habitat. 3. Crayfish were mainly active during hours of darkness, with signal crayfish spending significantly more time outside refuges than noble crayfish. The proportion of crayfish outside refuges varied between crayfish species, time and predator treatment, with signal crayfish spending more time in refuges at night in the presence of fish. 4. Survival in noble crayfish was higher than in signal crayfish, and signal crayfish had a higher frequency of lost chelipeds, indicating a high level of intraspecific interactions. Crayfish survival was not affected by the presence of predators. 5. Gut‐contents analysis and stable isotope values of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) indicated that the two crayfish species had similar food preferences, and that crayfish received most of their energy from feeding on invertebrates (e.g. chironomid larvae), although detritus was the most frequent food item in their guts. Signal crayfish guts were more full than those of noble crayfish, but signal crayfish in pools with fish contained significantly less food and fewer had consumed chironomids compared with predator‐free controls. Length increase of signal crayfish (35%) was significantly higher than of noble crayfish (20%), but signal crayfish in pools with fish grew less than in control pools. 6. This short‐term study indicates that fish species that do not pose a lethal threat to an organism may indirectly cause reductions in growth by affecting behaviour and feeding. This may occur even though prey are omnivorous and have access to and consume multiple food sources. These non‐lethal effects of predators are expected to be particularly important in exotic crayfish species that show a general response to fish, have high individual growth rates, and when their feeding on the most profitable food source is reduced.  相似文献

The introduced North-American signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) has become widespread throughout Europe where it has often replaced the native noble crayfish (Astacus astacus). The impact of this replacement on ecosystem processes in boreal lakes is still largely unknown. We compared the trophic niches of these two crayfish species in 16 small to medium sized boreal lakes in southern Finland; eight lakes with noble crayfish and eight lakes where the native crayfish populations had been lost and replaced by signal crayfish. We analysed carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes from samples of the crayfish and their putative food sources, and used stable isotope models to compare trophic niche widths of the two species of crayfish and to quantify the food sources used by them. At species level the signal crayfish exhibited a substantially larger trophic niche than that of the noble crayfish, but within-lake populations of the species did not differ in their niche widths. The isotopic niches of the two species strongly overlapped, and while the estimated proportions of food resources (profundal and littoral macroinvertebrates, terrestrial leaf detritus and macrophytes) used by crayfish varied considerably among individual populations, they did not differ consistently between the species. Our results suggest that, contrary to often expressed concerns, replacement of lost noble crayfish populations by the signal crayfish may not greatly alter the littoral food web structure in boreal lakes.  相似文献

Mitochondrial malic enzyme (l-Malate: NADP oxidoreductase (oxaloacetate decarboxylating) EC 1.1.1.40) has been isolated from abdomen muscle of crayfish Orconectes limosus by chromatography on Sepharose 6B and DEAE cellulose. Specific activity of the purified enzyme was about 5 μmols per min per mg protein, which corresponds to about 30-fold purification.
  • 2.2. This enzyme showed extremely small reversiblity, since the reaction in the direction of decarboxylation is at least 37, 190 and 760 times that for the carboxylation at pH 7.0, 7.5 and 8.0 respectively.
  • 3.3. Purified enzyme showed allosteric properties, which was more accentuated at more alkaline pH (Hill coefficients were 1.1, 1.7 and 1.8 at pH 7.0, 7.5 and 8.0 respectively). The activity of malic enzyme was increased considerably in the presence of succinate and fumarate.
  • 4.4. Mitochondira isolated from abdomen muscle of Orconectes limosus incubated in the presence of malate, fumate and succinate catalysed pyruvate production which was stimulated by ADP and inhibited by respiratory chain inhibitors.
  • 5.5. NADH but not NADPH oxidation was catalysed by broken mitochondria or sonic particles. When NADPH and NAD were added simultaneously the rate of oxidation. This suggests the presence of active NADPH:NAD transhydrogenase in mitochondria isolated from the crayfish abdomen muscle.

Summary The production of ecdysteroids (monitored by RIA) by Y-organs and cephalic glands in vitro was measured and hemolymph ecdysteroid levels were determined in the crayfish,Orconectes limosus, both after eyestalk ablation and as a function of time during natural premolt. Y-organ synthesis of ecdysteroid increased in parallel with a rise in hemolymph ecdysteroid concentrations under both conditions, peaking in substage D2 of premolt. Y-organ ecdysteroid output after eyestalk ablation was 3–4 times higher. Thus, removal of the inhibiting system of the eyestalk effectively removes not only the principal control but also any modulation of ecdysteroid secretion by the Y-organs. Ecdysteroid levels remained low in Y-organ-ectomized crayfish, although premolt was initiated in some animals. The cephalic gland does not appear to contribute to the regulation of molting inOrconectes limosus. The Y-organs, on the other hand, are a principal source of ecdysteroids which regulate the major synthetic activities of premolt.  相似文献

Summary

After solubilization of membranes from vitellogenic oocytes of the crayfish Orconectes limosus, a component with an apparent molecular weight between 28 and 30 kDa that specifically binds vitellogenin, could be identified by sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and by electroblotting. Because this component was pronase sensitive, we assume that we are dealing with a protein. A polyclonal rabbit antiserum was produced against this component and its tissue specificity was verified.  相似文献

Since the 1980s the Ponto-Caspian gammarid Dikerogammarus villosus has spread throughout Europe while displacing native species and is predicted to invade further continents. After it was introduced into Europe in the 1890s the North American crayfish Orconectes limosus spread throughout Europe and served as a vector to displace native crayfish as well. In Lake Constance (Germany) the previously dominant gammarid Gammarus roeselii is subjected to both of these invasive crustaceans. In our experiments both species placed predation pressure on G. roeselii. Kairomone perception tests in a Y-maze revealed the capability of the gammarids G. roeselii and D. villosus to perceive and avoid the scent of the predator crayfish O. limosus. Both species also avoided the kairomone of the other gammarid, but did not avoid the scent of their own species. This taxa specific behavior suggests that taxa specific signals are used. This behavior can help the gammarids avoid shelters previously occupied by predators.  相似文献

1. The feeding ecology of the crayfish Paranephrops planifrons in streams draining catchments in native forest and pastoral land was investigated using analyses of both stomach contents and stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen. We aimed to (1) identify the energy sources of crayfish, (2) determine whether these were affected by ontogeny or land use change, and (3) assess the functional and trophic roles of crayfish in New Zealand hill-country streams.
2. In native forest streams, crayfish stomach contents were dominated volumetrically by leaf detritus (>60%), but in pasture streams aquatic invertebrates constituted more than 40% of stomach volumes and leaf detritus <30%. Stable isotope analyses revealed that crayfish from both native forest and pasture streams incorporated energy from aquatic invertebrates into their body tissue but did not appear to utilize detritus for growth. Therefore, deforestation had little impact on crayfish energy sources.
3. In native forest streams, adult crayfish (≥20 mm orbit-carapace length (OCL)) consumed greater amounts of leaf detritus than juvenile crayfish, but a corresponding change in stable isotope signatures was not detected. Ontogenetic shifts in diet were not consistent between land use suggesting that change in local habitat and food resources, as a result of land use change, affect crayfish food choice more than factors related solely to age or size.
4. Crayfish appear to occupy the trophic position of a predator, but by functioning as omnivores, they have dual roles as both predators and processors of organic matter. The use of gut content analysis in conjunction with stable isotope analyses revealed that the functional and trophic roles of P. planifrons differed, with implications for the interpretation of diet studies and understanding of the role of omnivores in food webs.  相似文献

In intact (control) crabs (Carcinus maenas) and crayfish (Orconectes limosus) a significant (P < 0.01) increase in both glucose and lactate concentrations in the blood was observed after exposure to air. Such changes were not observed in either eyestalk-less or eyestalk-less and saline injected animals (P > 0.05).

  • 3.3. Significant hyperglycemia (P < 0.01), but no changes in lactate concentration (P > 0.05), was observed after injection of CHH in eyestalk-less submerged animals.
  • 4.4. These results suggest that the increase in glycolysis after air exposure is facilitated by CHH, possibly by increased substrate availability due to glycogen degradation.
