Eschweilera pseudodecolorans (Lecythidaceae), a new species from central Amazonian Brazil

A new species of Eschweilera, E. pseudodecolorans is described, illustrated, and discussed.     

Pollination ecology of the Cerrado species Eschweilera nana (Lecythidaceae subfam. Lecythidoideae)

Eschweilera nana is pollinated by a guild of pollinators consisting of mostly bees. Effective pollinators are large bees able to force their way into the closed androecium to access nectar. The morphology of the flowers diminishes self pollination and promotes cross-pollination. Although many pollinators make diurnal visits to the flowers, fruit set was very low in comparison with the number of flowers produced. Breeding system tests yielded only two fruits, one produced by xenogamy and another one in the control test. The results of this study are consistent with studies of other Cerrado plants pollinated by guilds of insects and support the conclusion of other pollination studies of Lecythidaceae that fruit set is low in comparison with the high numbers of flowers produced.     

Eschweilera mexicana (Lecythidaceae): A new family for the flora of Mexico

Eschweilera mexicana, a new species of Lecythidaceae from the Uxpanapa rain forests of southeastern Veracruz and adjacent Oaxaca, represents a new family for the Mexican flora. It is a locally common canopy tree in an area considered to have served as a refuge for rain forest species during the Pleistocene. Its closest relative isE. hondurensis, a species known only by one fruiting collection.

A new species of Gustavia (Lecythidaceae) from Panama

Gustavia fosteri is described from material collected on Barro Colorado Island, Panama and the differences are given between it and its closest relatives, G. superba Berg and G. angustifolia Benth.     

New species of Ficus (Moraceae) from Brazil

Eight new species from Brazil,Ficus acreana,F. bahiensis, F. duartei, F. duckeana, F. hatschbachii, F. lagoensis, F. laureola, andF. rupicola, are described and illustrated. The new species are compared with other species of the genus.     

A new species of Taeniastrotos Cressey (Copepoda: Poecilostomatoida) from southern Brazil

A new species of Taeniastrotos is described from an ariid host, Cathrops spixii, caught in southern Brazil. It is the first member of the genus to be recorded from the Atlantic Ocean and can be distinguished from its four known congeners by the setation of the terminal endopodal segment of the fourth leg.     

New species of Ruellia (Acanthaceae) from southern South America

Two new species ofRuellia,R. epallocaulos from northeastern Argentina, southern Brazil, and eastern Paraguay, andR. kleinii from southern Brazil, are described, illustrated and compared to related species.

New species of Stenandrium (Acanthaceae) from the Planalto of Brazil

Three new species ofStenandrium,S. hatschbachii from Minas Gerais,S. goiasense from Goiás, andS. irwinii also from Goiás, are described, illustrated, and compared with their closest relatives.     

Two new species of Petunia (Solanaceae) from southern Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

Petunia bajeensis and P. riograndensis, two new species from southern Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil are described, and their morphological distinction from related species and features of their habitats are discussed.     

New species of Hiraea (Malpighiaceae) from the Guianas and adjacent Brazil

Four species of Hiraea are described and discussed:H. gracieana andH. morii from Saül, French Guiana,H. longipes from the Oyapock region of French Guiana and Amapá, Brazil, andH. propinqua from French Guiana and Suriname.Hiraea gracieana is illustrated.     

New species and records of Heteroconium (anamorphic fungi) from southern China

Four anamorphic fungal species of Heteroconium were collected from tropical and subtropical forests in southern China. Among them, Heteroconium tsoongiodendronis sp. nov. and Heteroconium fici sp. nov. are described from specimens collected on dead branches of Tsoongiodendron odorum and Ficus gibbosa, respectively. Two species of Heteroconium, H. decorosum and H. ponapense, are recorded for the first time in China. A key to Heteroconium and related genera is also provided.     

A new genus and species of Euptychiina (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae: Satyrinae) from southern Brazil

This paper describes a new genus and a new species of Euptychiina from open grassland habitats (campos de cima da serra) in southern Brazil. The systematic position of this new taxon is discussed based on morphological and molecular data, and it is considered sister to Taydebis Freitas. Since the campos vegetation is considered endangered due to anthropogenic activities, this butterfly species deserves attention and should be included in future conservation plans for this biome.     

New records of thrips (Thysanoptera) species in Brazil

This study reports four thrips species from Brazil for the first time: the terebrantians Aptinothrips rufus (Haliday) and Echinothrips caribbeanus Hood; and the tubuliferans Androthrips ramachandrai Karny and Gynaikothrips uzeli (Zimmermann). New data about biological aspects of some of these new records are presented.     

A new Gloeoporus species growing on bamboo from southern Brazil

Gloeoporus guerreroanus sp. nov. is described and illustrated from specimens collected on bamboo in Rio Grande do Sul State, southern Brazil. The new taxon presents hymenium continuum along the tubular internal surface and dissepiments and represents an addition into the relatively small, poroid-merulioid genus Gloeoporus.     

New species of Antognathus (Conodonts) from the Famennian deposits of southern Kazakhstan

A new conodont species, Antognathus vjatsheslavi sp. nov., is described from the Famennian shallow-water carbonate deposits of the Bolshoi (Greater) Karatau Range in southern Kazakhstan.
