Maps are presented showing the recorded distribution and species density of terrestrial plants in the Vestfold Hills. The distribution, biomass and species diversity of terrestrial lithic algae, mosses and lichens is influenced positively by availability of meltwater from drift snow and by additional nutrient supply (probably N and P) near bird nest sites. The terrestrial plants are affected negatively by exposure (including sand blast) and salinity. These four factors are probably the most important environmental characteristics exercising local control over plant distribution and abundance within the limits set by temperature.Large changes in salinity, degree of exposure, water supply and nutrient supply occur across the Vestfold Hills, with the most favourable conditions generally occurring in the eastern half fairly close to the ice sheet.Plant distribution and abundance are also discussed in relation to the length of time that particular areas have been exposed as a result of ice retreat. With increasing time of exposure, plant diversity and abundance rise but subsequently fall sharply as conditions become more arid, saline, or both. This temporal sequence can be explained by considering changes in the important factors that control plant growth.  相似文献

The vast majority of well-characterized eukaryotic viruses are those that cause acute or chronic infections in humans and domestic plants and animals. However, asymptomatic persistent viruses have been described in animals, and are thought to be sources for emerging acute viruses. Although not previously described in these terms, there are also many viruses of plants that maintain a persistent lifestyle. They have been largely ignored because they do not generally cause disease. The persistent viruses in plants belong to the family Partitiviridae or the genus Endornavirus. These groups also have members that infect fungi. Phylogenetic analysis of the partitivirus RNA-dependent RNA polymerase genes suggests that these viruses have been transmitted between plants and fungi. Additional families of viruses traditionally thought to be fungal viruses are also found frequently in plants, and may represent a similar scenario of persistent lifestyles, and some acute or chronic viruses of crop plants may maintain a persistent lifestyle in wild plants. Persistent, chronic and acute lifestyles of plant viruses are contrasted from both a functional and evolutionary perspective, and the potential role of these lifestyles in host evolution is discussed.  相似文献

Thirteen species of fish have so far been caught in the inshore waters around the Vestfold Hills, including the Rauer Islands, in depths down to approximately 100 m. Species caught depend markedly on the type of fishing gear used, but three species are clearly dominant numerically. Pagothenia bernacchii is most abundant in the shallower (< 20 m deep) weedy and rocky habitats, while Chionodraco hamatus is dominant in the deeper (> 20 m deep) nearshore troughs and further offshore. Pagothenia borchgrevinki occupies the specialized habitat associated with sea ice and close-inshore areas, including fjords and Burton Lake.The species list from the Vestfold Hills area is similar to lists from comparable locations in East Antarctica except for the major difference that C. hamatus has not yet been recorded from such shallow waters at the other locations, while P. bernacchii and P. hansoni are much more abundant in water deeper than 20 m at those sites than at Davis.  相似文献

The planktonic, ice/water interface, and benthic communities at three sites off the coast of the Vestfold Hills, Antarctica, were examined over a complete year.The planktonic flora and fauna were composed predominantly of oceanic species with diatoms and copepods the numerically dominant groups. Primary production was largely restricted to the summer months except for epontic algae which developed in spring. The zooplankton exhibited a similar seasonal cycle but lagged some months behind that of the phytoplankton.The ice/water interface (epontic) fauna consisted of species from the plankton and benthos. Copepods were major contributors; however, two amphipod species dominated. Seasonality of the fauna in this habitat was determined by ice formation and breakout, and development of ice algae.Each of the benthic substrates supported a characteristic macrofaunal assemblage, although infaunal amphipods and tanaids were similar at each site. Infauna exhibited a distinct seasonal cycle related to that of the primary producers whereas macrofauna showed no seasonal changes in abundance.Species composition of each community in this coastal antarctic region was comparable with that of similar habitats in other antarctic coastal areas, supporting the circumpolarity of antarctic marine communities.  相似文献

The moss vegetation of the Windmill Islands can be classified into the following seven communities: 1.Grimmia antarctici community; 2. G. antarctici-Ceratodon purpureus community; 3. Bryum pseudotriquetrum community; 4. G. antarctici-B, pseudotriquetrum community; 5. Ceratodon purpureus community; 6. C. purpureus-G, antarctici community; 7. C. purpureus B. pseudotriquetrum community. Communities 1, 3, 4 and 7 occur in wet habitats while communities 5 and 6 are found in rather dry habitats, community 2 distributes between dry and wet habitats. Microtopography governs the distribution of water supply and therefore community types. Stable moss communities usually form moss hummocks and hollows. Species composition, colour and height of the hummocks determines the vertical structure of the moss community layers with 2-3 strata being discernible and level structure forming mosaic. Other phytocoenological characteristics of the moss communities, such as the dense moss cushions, asexual reproduction (although antheridia or archegonia have been found in each of the species), abundance of epiphytic algae and lichens growing on the surface of moss hummocks, the colour change of some species in different habitats, appear related to moisture availability, light intensity, wind exposure and temperature.  相似文献

Distribution patterns are presented for selected aquatic algae, and terrestrial algae, mosses and lichens, at three large, coastal ice-free regions on Ross Island. Each region is unique in certain aspects of its vegetation. The variation in areal and quantitative occurrence of different components of the vegetation in diverse ponds and streams, and over exposed ground surfaces, is related to the levels of marine salts in the environment, fertilisation by birds, water availability, substratum type and degree of exposure. A comparison is made with other antarctic, coastal, ice-free regions where similar broadscale patterns have been recognised.  相似文献

A list of the 24 species of snow algae identified from the region, a resume of what is currently known about the major species, and avenues for further research are provided. New species discovered include 2 Desmotetra spp., one Chlorosarcina sp., 2 Chloromonas spp. and a Palmellopsis sp. Several of these are from genera whose members have previously been found only in the soil flora. Not only was it necessary to elucidate the life cycle of these species, but it was also essential to examine them ultrastructurally to determine their taxonomic positions.  相似文献

Summer macroalgal biomass and production were analyzed at Potter Cove, King George Island, Antarctica and the potential carbon transfer of macroalgal production to the coastal ecosystem of the cove was estimated. A total of 38 algal species were found, with Desmarestia anceps, D. menziesii and Himantothallus grandifolius accounting for almost 80% of the biomass. Biomass data and published growth rates were combined to calculate the production of the five most abundant species. The standing stock for each summer month was estimated as the product of the average biomass and the area of the macroalgal stands. The monthly biomass production was calculated for each species by difference between the expected biomass and the observed biomass at the previous month. The macroalgal production showed a decreasing trend during the summer months. The average standing stock in the whole cove was 792.84 MT and the production was 1,401.33 MT during the summer 1994–1995. The flux of biomass to the ecosystem during the summer period was 1,370.61 MT, which is almost as much as the total summer production. The study demonstrates that macroalgae are one of the main energy sources in Potter Cove, and probably support a large fraction of the secondary production of the benthos.  相似文献

Microfungi were isolated from soils, mosses, algae and lichens in the Windmill Islands region of Antarctica. From a total of 1,228 isolates, 22 genera were identified. The most frequently isolated fungi from mosses were Mycelia sterilia (47% of total isolates), Phoma spp. (18%), Penicillium spp. (11%), Chrysosporium spp. (7%) and Thelebolus microsporus (6%). Mycelia sterilia, Penicillium spp., Mortierella spp., Chrysosporium cf. pannorum and Thelebolus microsporus were also frequently isolated from algae. Fungal distribution and diversity were poor in samples of lichens, compared to samples from mosses and algae. The frequency of occurrence of microfungi was most often associated with strong biotic influence. There was a marked increase in fungal diversity in human-disturbed sites. Twelve taxa were restricted to soils from near the Australian Casey Station, suggesting significant introduction of fungi into this environment by human activities. Away from the station, fungal distribution appeared to be related to substrata and nutrient status rather than dispersal opportunities. Suggestions for future research and the need for constant monitoring to clarify the role of human disturbance on Antarctic fungi are discussed. Viruses are ubiquitous in the sea and appear to outnumber all other forms of marine life by at least an order of magnitude. Through selective infection, viruses influence nutrient cycling, community structure, and evolution in the ocean. Over the past 20 years we have learned a great deal about the diversity and ecology of the viruses that constitute the marine virioplankton, but until recently the emphasis has been on DNA viruses. Along with expanding knowledge about RNA viruses that infect important marine animals, recent isolations of RNA viruses that infect single-celled eukaryotes and molecular analyses of the RNA virioplankton have revealed that marine RNA viruses are novel, widespread, and genetically diverse. Discoveries in marine RNA virology are broadening our understanding of the biology, ecology, and evolution of viruses, and the epidemiology of viral diseases, but there is still much that we need to learn about the ecology and diversity of RNA viruses before we can fully appreciate their contributions to the dynamics of marine ecosystems. As a step toward making sense of how RNA viruses contribute to the extraordinary viral diversity in the sea, we summarize in this review what is currently known about RNA viruses that infect marine organisms.  相似文献

西沙群岛是我国南端的一群热带岛屿,自然环境独特,植物区系特殊.本文通过对西沙群岛24个岛屿的野外实地调查,并结合相关文献资料,研究分析了西沙群岛的植物多样性、分布以及植物区系,并列出了该地区的植物名录.结果表明,西沙群岛共有维管植物396种,隶属于85科262属,其中野生植物220种,栽培植物176种.总体来说,西沙群岛植物种类较贫乏,各岛屿植物多样性差异较大.植物区系以热带成分为主,是我国热带珊瑚岛植物区系的典型代表,其区系成分与海南岛植物区系联系最为密切,与我国台湾、中南半岛、马来西亚、印度尼西亚和菲律宾等的区系亦密切相关.  相似文献

This work constitutes the first floristic and ecological analysis of the phytoplankton community of a volcanic freshwater lake in Deception Island (62°57′S, 60°38′W, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica). The main limnological features and phytoplankton size fractions were analyzed. Samples were taken during the austral summer of 2002 at two opposite sites. According to ANOVA results performed with abiotic variables, no significant differences between sites were found. The phytoplankton community showed low algal species richness, with an important contribution of the tychoplanktonic taxa. In terms of species number, Bacillariophyceae was the dominant class. Autotrophic picoplankton registered the highest densities from the second sampling date onwards. Nanophytoplankton was represented by unidentified chrysophycean organisms, which showed different distribution patterns between sites. The net phytoplankton abundance remained low during the sampling period and was strongly correlated with chlorophyll a concentration. Both nutrient concentrations and chlorophyll a values indicated oligotrophic conditions.  相似文献

In order to ascertain whether the major species of continental antarctic macrolichens are photosynthetically active during summer conditions, the chlorophyll fluorescence of three lichen species [Umbilicarin decussata (Vill. Zahlbr., Pseudephebe minuscula (Ny-l. ex Arnold) Brodo and Hawksw. and Usnea sphacetala R. Br.] was monitored in the vicinity of Casey Station. Wilkes Land, continental Antarctica using a PAM-2000 modulated fluorescence system. Lichens were studied when in equilibrium with the atmosphere as well as when moistened by snow showers. Photochemical quantum yield was estimated as ΔF/F′m and related to thallus water content as well as microclimatic conditions. Lichens were photosynthetically active only when moistened by snow fall or by run-off from snow melt. The levels of photosynthetic activity in the field for all species were influenced by microenvironmental conditions and patterns in response were site and species specific. Highest levels of photosynthetic efficiency occurred when thalli were at intermediate water contents. Photosynthetic activity was reduced by cold as well as warm, bright conditions. Highest thallus water contents occurred during the middle of the day after substantial “falls of snow. P. minuscula maintained highest thallus water contents at all sites and appears to have a high water compensation point which is related to its observed distribution patterns. Umbilicaria decussata studied in the laboratory did not become photosynthetically active even when exposed to 95% relative humidity (RH) for 51 h and. when dehydrating after artificial wetting, showed an optimum thallus water content for photosynthesis of ca 90% dry weight and a thallus water compensation point of about 35% dry weighl. In the field U. decussata did not become pholosynthetically active except when moistened by snow. Usnea sphacelata exposed to the atmosphere had low thallus water contents (ca 30%) which was not related to RH. The results indicate that the lichens are photosynthetically inactive for most of the summer period and are totally reliant on snow as a water supply. This i.s important when modelling carbon gain and growth rates of continental antarctic lichens.  相似文献

Although frequent studies have been made on the benthos assemblages living in the Southern Ocean, few studies have dealt with molluscan assemblages and ecology. During the research programmes BENTART carried out in austral summers of 2003 and 2006 in a study area including Low Island, West Antarctic Peninsula, Bellingshausen Sea and Peter I Island, 45 stations were sampled using quantitative box-corer, Agassiz trawl, epibenthic sledge and rock dredge, at depths of 53–3,304 m. These data were used to search and analyse the malacological assemblages. A total of 2,889 living specimens of molluscs belonging to 139 species of shelled Gastropoda, Bivalvia and Scaphopoda were recoded. Gastropods were the best-represented in species richness, but the bivalves accounted the major abundance and Cyamiocardium denticulatum (460 individuals) was the most abundant species. Species richness varied from 1 to 37 species and diversity showed great variations at different stations. Four groups of stations of low similarities and some differences in faunistic composition were observed: one that gathers the Antarctic Peninsula and Peter I Island, one that also includes the Low Island, and two composed by stations of Bellingshausen Sea.  相似文献

Abstract

The harsh climatic conditions of Antarctica represent an obstacle for the development of animal and vegetable life. On the continent and in the sea, however, there are living organisms of which the microalgae are the most important vital component. These colonize the sea and the lakes. There are also microalgae which live in small rocky channels, in the soil, in the snow and in the glaciers. Others are found above mosses. Cyanobacteria and Green Algae are more abundant in the continent (including the lakes), while Diatoms are the main entities in the sea. Their life-cycle seems to be more influenced by low light intensity rather than temperature.  相似文献

The harsh climate and patchy distribution of habitable terrestrial ecosystems constrain soil invertebrate communities in continental Antarctica. The Windmill Islands in East Antarctica have a relatively gentle climate by Antarctic standards, and the region supports some of the most well-developed moss beds on the continent. These moss beds and soils are known to sustain invertebrate communities dominated by nematodes, rotifers and tardigrades, but our knowledge of the diversity and composition of these communities remains limited. We extracted soil fauna from 74 soil samples representing a wide range of microhabitats, and 24 moss samples, collected at Clark Peninsula, Bailey Peninsula and Robinson Ridge in the Windmill Islands during the 2012–2013 austral summer. Invertebrates were present in all samples, but densities varied considerably both within and between sites with limited correlation with edaphic variables or cover type. Taxa found included two species of nematodes (Plectus murrayi; Plectus frigophilus), one mite (Nanorchestes antarcticus) as well as tardigrades and rotifers (enumerated only). No springtails were found in this study, but individuals of the genus Cryptopygus were later recovered from moss collected near Casey Station. The Windmill Islands soils and moss beds support dense populations of soil fauna. However, despite the relatively mild climate conditions and favorable soil properties, species diversity is low. The diversity is possibly limited by recent deglaciation and limited dispersal opportunities to the region. Given favorable local conditions, it is likely that colonizing species will perform well, whether these arrive by natural means or are accidentally introduced by humans.  相似文献

The dietary composition of juvenile Trematomus newnesi, trawled at Potter Cove, South Shetland Islands, in the summers 2004–2005 and 2005–2006 was analysed using frequency of occurrence (F%) and dietary coefficient Q (%) methods. The samples consisted exclusively of immature specimens in the range 4–15.4 cm (total length) and are complementary to those of larger fish from the same site, including adults, which were analysed in previous work. Benthic-demersal organisms such as gammaridean amphipods and harpacticoid copepods were the main (coefficient Q) and most frequent (F%) prey. The importance of the smaller and larger main prey diminished and increased, respectively, during ontogeny. Pelagic krill, being negligible in the diet of the small and medium size fish categories, became secondary food, but only for fish larger than 12 cm. Other taxonomic groups occurred scarcely and constituted occasional food. They were mostly benthic, such as gastropods, bivalves, isopods, cumaceans, and algae, with the exception of an insignificant number of pelagic ostracods and calanoid copepods. Unlike the more pelagic/planktivorous mode of life known for late juvenile-adult stages of T. newnesi, including cryopelagy, present results indicate that early juvenile fish remain sheltered among macroalgae beds preying on the associated community of demersal-benthic organisms.  相似文献

Seasonal occurrence, diel-vocalizing patterns, and call-types of Antarctic minke whales are described using bio-acoustic recordings from the west coast of South Africa and the Maud Rise, Antarctica. In Antarctica, minke whale bioduck calls were detected in seven of nine months of hydrophone deployment (peaking in May and September) while downsweeps were only detected in June. Bioduck calls were sporadically detected in South African waters with peak calling in September/October, and no bioducks were detected from March through August. Bioduck call occurrence was high during daytime in Antarctica but there was no diel-vocalizing pattern in South African waters. We split bioduck B call-type into two subtypes: B1 with 13 ± 1 pulses (Dominello & Širović, 2016) and B2 with 9 ± 1 pulses (this study). Bioduck B2 was detected both in Antarctic and South African waters, with harmonics up to 2 kHz. Similar bioduck call-types were detected in Antarctic and South African waters, with bioduck A2 being the most common. Month of the year was the most important predictor of bioduck occurrence both in Antarctic and South African waters. This is the first study to describe the seasonal occurrence, diel-vocalizing behavior and call-types of Antarctic minke whales off the South African west coast and eastern Weddell Sea.  相似文献

西沙群岛主要的植被类型是常绿珊瑚岛林、灌木林或滨海植被。本区有植物89科224属340种,其中大型真菌6科11属22种,地衣1种,蕨类4科4属5种,被子植物78科208属312种。根据其经济用途,划分为10个类型,主要资源植物有药用植物、蜜源植物、食用植物、观赏植物等。西沙群岛的植物区系与海南岛十分相似,属、种的相似性指标分别为98.46%和94.09%。泛热带分布的属是本区系中最大的部分,占总属数的70.00%。最后对西沙群岛植物资源的保护和利用进行了讨论。  相似文献
