People adapt to thermal environments, such as the changing seasons, predominantly by controlling the amount of clothing insulation, usually in the form of the clothing that they wear. The aim of this study was to determine the actual daily clothing insulation on sedentary human subjects across the seasons. Thirteen females and seven males participated in experiments from January to December in a thermal chamber. Adjacent months were grouped in pairs to give six environmental conditions: (1) January/February = 5°C; (2) March/April = 14°C; (3) May/June = 25°C; (4) July/August = 29°C; (5) September/October = 23°C; (6) November/December = 8°C. Humidity(45 ± 5%) and air velocity(0.14 ± 0.01 m/s) were constant across all six experimental conditions. Participants put on their own clothing that allowed them to achieve thermal comfort for each air temperature, and sat for 60 min (1Met). The clothing insulation (clo) required by these participants had a significant relationship with air temperature: insulation was reduced as air temperature increased. The range of clothing insulation for each condition was 1.87–3.14 clo at 5°C(Jan/Feb), 1.62–2.63 clo at 14°C(Mar/Apr), 0.87–1.59 clo at 25°C(May/Jun), 0.4–1.01 clo at 29°C(Jul/Aug), 0.92–1.81 clo at 23°C (Sept/Oct), and 2.12–3.09 clo at 8°C(Nov/Dec) for females, and 1.84–2.90 clo at 5°C, 1.52–1.98 clo at 14°C, 1.04–1.23 clo at 25°C, 0.51–1.30 clo at 29°C, 0.82–1.45 clo at 23°C and 1.96–3.53 clo at 8°C for males. The hypothesis was that thermal insulation of free living clothing worn by sedentary Korean people would vary across seasons. For Korean people, a comfortable air temperature with clothing insulation of 1 clo was approximately 27°C. This is greater than the typical comfort temperature for 1 clo. It was also found that women clearly increased their clothing insulation level of their clothing as winter approached but did not decrease it by the same amount when spring came. 相似文献

This study evaluates the effect of different levels of insulation on esophageal (T
es) and rectal (T
re) temperature responses during and following moderate exercise. Seven subjects completed three 18-min bouts of treadmill exercise
(75% VO2max, 22°C ambient temperature) followed by 30 min of recovery wearing either: (1) jogging shoes, T-shirt and shorts (athletic
clothing); (2) single-knit commercial coveralls worn over the athletic clothing (coveralls); or (3) a Canadian Armed Forces
nuclear, bacteriological and chemical warfare protective overgarment with hood, worn over the athletic clothing (NBCW overgarment).
T
es was similar at the start of exercise for each condition and baseline T
re was ∼0.4°C higher than T
es. The hourly equivalent rate of increase in T
es during the final 5 min of exercise was 1.8°C, 3.0°C and 4.2°C for athletic clothing, coveralls and NBCW overgarment respectively
(P<0.05). End-exercise T
es was significantly different between conditions [37.7°C (SEM 0.1°C), 38.2°C (SEM 0.2°C and 38.5°C (SEM 0.2°C) for athletic
clothing, coveralls and NBCW overgarment respectively)] (P<0.05). No comparable difference in the rate of temperature increase for T
re was demonstrated, except that end-exercise T
re for the NBCW overgarment condition was significantly greater (0.5°C) than that for the athletic clothing condition. There
was a drop in T
es during the initial minutes of recovery to sustained plateaus which were significantly (P<0.05) elevated above pre-exercise resting values by 0.6°C, 0.8°C and 1.0°C, for athletic clothing, coveralls, and NBCW overgarment,
respectively. Post-exercise T
re decreased very gradually from end-exercise values during the 30-min recovery. Only the NBCW overgarment condition T
re was significantly elevated (0.3°C) above the athletic clothing condition (P<0.05). In conclusion, T
es is far more sensitive in reflecting the heat stress of different levels of insulation during exercise and post-exercise than
T
re. Physiological mechanisms are discussed as possible explanations for the differences in response.

The influence of clothing on skin temperature distributions of the torso was investigated during and after cold exposure. Volunteers were cooled for one hour at 5 degrees C while wearing clothing designed to have insulation which was intended to be relatively uniformly distributed. Three different thicknesses of clothing were used. Following thermistor measurements of skin temperatures during the cold exposures, clothing was quickly removed from the upper parts of the body to enable thermographic investigations of the temperature distributions of the front of the bare torso. The evolution of temperature distributions were then studied at different ambient temperatures (5 degrees C and 20 degrees C) as a function of the thickness of the insulation which had previously been worn. The patterns of the temperature distributions, and the range and standard deviation of torso temperatures were all found to be relatively constant in spite of the different thicknesses of clothing worn or in the time-variant mean torso temperatures which resulted. The front torso sites normally used for the determination of mean skin temperatures were found to be on portions of the torso which were cooler than the surrounding regions. It was concluded that a site midway between the umbilicus and a nipple yields a more accurate estimate of mean torso temperature in the conditions of the present study. 相似文献

A wind tunnel and an external microwave energy source formed the basis of an experimental technique to investigate many complex functional relationships between climatic parameters and leaf temperatures. The results of preliminary experimental plant-environment interactions are compared with published theoretical results obtained by solving the energy balance equation for a single leaf. 相似文献

A method of direct measurement of the heat and vapor transfer properties of clothing is described when worn in situ by human subjects during rest and exercise. Additional experimental observations were used to verify that a model for predicting Fpcl is reasonably accurate. From the thermal efficiency factor (Fcl), derived from
s and Tcl measurements, an effective value for Iclo can be determined and thus vapor permeation efficiency (Fpcl) can be predicted. A single coefficient () that characterizes the boundary environment over the skin surface is the ratio (hFcl)/(heFpcl) and is determined for any environment in terms of directly observed Fcl factor or clo value and relative air movement concerned. Ultimately,-factor may be used as a key biometeorological parameter to describe any heat balance condition graphically on a psychrometric chart. Its usefulness is also evident in prediction of the probable combination of operative temperature and humidity necessary for thermal acceptable zones, the limits for evaporative regulation, and the zone in which some degree of thermal regulatory failure can be expected.Presented at the Seventh International Biometeorological Congress, 17–23 August 1975, College Park, Maryland, USA. 相似文献

Conventional loose-weave cotton operating garments were compared with clothing of a non-woven fabric to test their efficacy in reducing the dispersal of skin bacteria into theatre air. When men wore operating suits made of the non-woven fabric dispersal of skin bacteria was reduced by 72%. When all the operating-theatre staff wore suits and dresses of this fabric air bacterial counts during operating sessions were reduced by 55%; no reduction occurred when the fabric was worn by only the scrubbed team. The lowest levels of microbial contamination of the air in the operating theatre occurred when both the unscrubbed and scrubbed theatre staff wore clothes of non-woven fabric. 相似文献

The management of boars to ensure good sperm production under differing environmental conditions is a major concern for pig keepers in both tropical countries and countries where there are extreme environmental changes. Such changes create stress in animals and influence the production of spermatozoa. High temperatures during hot summer months may result in lower feed consumption and create stresses that result in the inhibition of spermatogenesis. Although tropical countries do not have a problem with major variations in day length, this can cause problems such as decreased litter size and infertility in other regions of the world. Evaporative cooling systems built into boar accommodation are often used to reduce fluctuations in both temperature and humidity during the hot and humid months seen in tropical countries. The system has become popular in AI boar studs, where it is reported to reduce stress and improve feed consumption. Other management factors, such as housing comfort, social contact, mating conditions and the frequency of mating, are also very important boar management aids that assist good quality semen production; these will be covered briefly in this review. This review will consider primarily those management factors, for example, the management of temperature and humidity using evaporative cooling systems and other techniques that enable AI boar studs to maximize sperm fertility through adjustments to the environment. 相似文献

Standard meteorological measurements of dry bulb temperature, wind speed, sunshine, cloud cover and rainfall are used to calculate the clothing insulation required by man for thermal comfort under given weather conditions. The calculation is based on earlier work on the effect of weather on sensible (non-evaporative) heat loss from sheep, which used the relation between heat flow, thermal insulation and the difference between body and environmental temperatures.Clothing insulation for man is estimated in two ways: as clothing (Ic) that is impervious to the effects of wind and rain; and as the equivalent depth of sheep fleece (fm), which is not impervious. This allows the assessment of wind chill for a range of clothing of varied penetration by wind instead of for only one type of garment. Results are given as daily means calculated from hourly measurements throughout 1973 for Plymouth (on the south coast of Britain) and Aberdeen (on the far northeast coast of Britain). Wind chill is estimated both by its effect on fm requirement and by the fall in air temperature that would be needed to produce under still-air conditions the same demand for fm that occurs in the actual environment. The monthly mean fm requirement is reduced by about 40% when the effect of wind is removed. When wind chill is estimated as an equivalent fall in air temperature it approximates to 1 K per knot wind speed measured at the standard meteorological height of 10 m. 相似文献

Echinoids are common members of Antarctic zoobenthos, and different groups can show important trophic diversity. As part of the ANT-XXIX/3 cruise of RV Polarstern, trophic plasticity of sea urchins was studied in three neighbouring regions (Drake Passage, Bransfield Strait and Weddell Sea) featuring several depth-related habitats offering different trophic environments to benthic consumers. Three families with contrasting feeding habits (Cidaridae, Echinidae and Schizasteridae) were studied. Gut content examination and stable isotopes ratios of C and N suggest that each of the studied families showed a different response to variation in environmental and food conditions. Schizasteridae trophic plasticity was low, and these sea urchins were bulk sediment feeders relying on sediment-associated organic matter in all regions and/or depth-related habitats. Cidaridae consumed the most animal-derived material. Their diet varied according to the considered area, as sea urchins from Bransfield Strait relied mostly on living and/or dead animal material, while specimens from Weddell Sea fed on a mixture of dead animal material and other detritus. Echinidae also showed important trophic plasticity. They fed on various detrital items in Bransfield Strait, and selectivity of ingested material varied across depth-related habitats. In Weddell Sea, stable isotopes revealed that they mostly relied on highly 13C-enriched food items, presumably microbially reworked benthic detritus. The differences in adaptive strategies could lead to family-specific responses of Antarctic echinoids to environmental and food-related changes. 相似文献

Changes in the cell surface hydrophobicity (CSH) of bacteria Zymomonas mobilis 113S were examined in response to varied environmental conditions (temperature and phase of growth, concentration or type of carbon source, the presence of amphiphilic compounds). The values of CSH were elevated with a decreased growth rate over the time of cultivation up to 20–22% at the stationary phase. CSH values increased proportionally with the growth of cultivation temperature and concentration of carbon source (glucose or sucrose) or amphiphilic compound (aliphatic alcohols, Tween80) in the medium. Replacement of sucrose by glucose and the presence of Tween20 in the growth medium resulted in reduced values of CSH. An inverse relationship was detected between the number of attached cells to the hydrophilic glass surfaces and the CSH values of Z. mobilis whereas direct linear relationship was observed for hydrophobic surfaces. Permeation rates of the fluorescent probe (NPN) into the cells were directly proportional to the concentration of extracellular protein in the medium and to the values of CSH indicating the impaired barrier function for more hydrophobic cells. The multiple correlation between the CSH values and absorption indices of FT-IR spectra at the fingerprint region (866–1088 cm−1) suggests the possible contribution of carbohydrates and/or lipopolysaccharides in observed changes of Z. mobilis hydrophobicity. 相似文献
