Aims In this study, we examined the effects of Solidago altissima (hereafter Solidago) and two species in the genus Verbesina, Verbesina virginica and Verbesina occidentalis (hereafter Verbesina), on the structure of an old-field plant community and establishment by an invasive plant species, Lespedeza cuneata (hereafter Lespedeza). Methods We removed Solidago, Verbesina and both Solidago and Verbesina from 4-m 2 plots in an intact old-field community during two growing seasons. We then quantified the effects of these removals on richness, evenness, diversity and composition of the subdominant plant community. We also measured the total aboveground biomass and the aboveground biomass of the subdominant community. To assess how these removals affected establishment by Lespedeza, we planted 20 seeds in each plot and tracked seedling emergence and survival for one growing season.Important findings Subdominant community evenness and Shannon diversity were higher in plots from which Solidago and Verbesina were removed relative to control plots. However, there were no effects of dominant species removal on species richness or composition of the subdominant community. Total aboveground biomass was not affected by dominant species removal, suggesting that the community of subdominant species exhibited compensation. In fact, subdominant community biomass was greater when Solidago, but not Verbesina, was removed. Light availability was also greater in plots where Solidago was removed relative to control plots throughout the growing season. In addition, removal of dominant species, in particular Solidago, indirectly reduced the emergence, but not survival, of Lespedeza seedlings by directly promoting subdominant community biomass. Taken together, our results suggest that dominant old-field plant species affect subdominant community structure and indirectly promote establishment by Lespedeza .

Species diversity is thought to stabilize functioning of plant communities. An alternative view is that stability depends more on dynamics of dominant species than on diversity. We compared inter-annual variability (inverse of stability) of aboveground biomass in paired restored and remnant tallgrass prairies at two locations in central Texas, USA. Data from these two locations were used to test the hypothesis that greater richness and evenness in remnant than restored prairies would reduce variability in aboveground biomass in response to natural variation in rainfall. Restored prairies were chosen to be similar to paired remnant prairies in characteristics other than species diversity that affect temporal variability in biomass. Variability was measured as the coefficient of variation among years (square root of variance/mean; CV), where variance in community biomass equals the sum of variances of individual plant species plus the summed covariances between species pairs. Species diversity over five years was greater by a factor of 2 or more in remnant than restored prairies because richness and evenness were greater in remnant than restored prairies. Still, the CV of community biomass during spring and CV of annual biomass production did not differ consistently between prairie types. Neither the sum of species covariances nor total community biomass differed between prairies. Biomass varied relatively little in restored compared to remnant prairies because biomass of the dominant species in restored prairies (the grass Schizachyrium scoparium ) varied less than did biomass of other dominant and sub-dominant species. In these grasslands, biomass response to natural variation in precipitation depended as much on characteristics of a dominant grass as on differences in diversity.

Aims The relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning has intrigued ecologists for several decades, but the effect of loss of a dominant species on community structure and functioning along a nutrient gradient remains poorly understood. The aim of this paper was to test the effect of a dominant species on community structure and function by conducting a species removal experiment along a fertilization gradient. Methods We removed the population of a dominant species (Elymus nutans) in a long-term fertilization field in an alpine meadow on the Tibetan Plateau, China. Univariate general linear models were used to evaluate the effects of fertilization and removal on above-ground vegetation characteristics, including photosynthetically active radiation in the understory, species richness, Shannon–Weiner diversity index, Simpson's dominance index, above-ground biomass (including different functional groups) and seedling richness and density.Important findings Results revealed that after two plant growing seasons, there was no significant effect of the removal of a dominant species on species richness and diversity of the remaining vegetation, but the biomass of forbs and seedling recruitment were significantly increased indicative of the potential for long-term effects. Moreover, removal had a large effect at high fertilization levels, but little effect when fertilization levels were low. Our studies indicated that community response to loss of a dominant species was mainly dependent on resource availability and the remaining functional group identities. We also found seedling recruitment was usually more sensitive to the influence of competition of dominant species than the established vegetation in the short term.

The effects of competitive suppression by vines on the non-vine plant community have received little attention in temperate habitats. This study investigated the impact vines have on their herbaceous hosts in a wetland community at two soil fertility levels. Plots in an oligohaline marsh were treated in a 2 × 2 factorial design with vine removal and fertilization over two growing seasons. There was no significant interaction between removal and fertilization treatments on any of the measured variables. Vine removal initially caused an increase in light penetration through the canopy, but by the end of the study, plots with vines removed had less light due to a 25% increase in biomass by the plants released from competition with vines. For plots with vines removed, species richness was higher during a brief period in the spring of the second year, but by the end of the study, richness in removal plots decreased relative to controls. Fertilization caused a 40% increase in biomass overall, although only two species, Sagittaria lancifolia L. and Polygonum punctatum Ell., showed dramatic increases. Despite fertilization causing a 40% decrease in light penetration to the ground, no change in species richness was observed. Overall, these results show that vine cover in this wetland suppresses non-vine species and reduces community biomass. Removal of vines increased biomass of non-vine dominants but resulted in only an ephemeral change in species richness. Fertilization did not increase the effects of vines on the non-vine community.

Species evenness and productivity in experimental plant communities
In nature, plant biomass is not evenly distributed across species, and naturally uncommon species may differ from common species in the probability of loss from the community. Understanding relationships between evenness and productivity is therefore critical to understanding changes in ecosystem functioning as species are lost from communities. We examined data from a large multi-site grassland experiment (BIODEPTH) for relationships between evenness of species composition (proportional abundance of biomass) and total biomass of communities. For plots which started with the same and even species composition, but which diverged in evenness over time, those with lower evenness had a significantly greater biomass. The relationship between evenness and biomass across all plots was also negative. However, for communities where the most common species represented one of the three largest species in monoculture at that site (inclusion of a large dominant species), the relationship was neutral. Path analyses indicated that three paths contributed to this negative relationship. First, higher species richness decreased evenness, but increased biomass (primarily through an increase in maximum plant size). Contrary to predictions, maximum plant size had either no effect on evenness, or a positive effect (in year 3 plots with a large dominant species), thereby reducing this relationship. In year 2, large variation among species in plant size (as measured in monoculture) both decreased evenness and increased biomass, thus increasing the strength of the negative relationship between evenness and biomass. However, the former effect was only found in plots with a large dominant species, the latter only in plots without a large dominant species. When species richness, maximum plant size, and variation in size were accounted for, in year 2 evenness positively affected biomass in plots that included a large dominant species. Our results are consistent with the view that naturally uncommon species may be unaffected by (or even benefit from) the presence of a large naturally common species, and that uncommon plants may have little ability to increase productivity in the absence of such a species. We conclude that the observed negative relationship between evenness and biomass resulted from multiple direct and indirect effects, the relative strength of which depended in part on the presence of large dominant species.

Aims Decades of empirical work have demonstrated how dominant plant species and nitrogen fertilization can influence the structure and function of plant communities. More recent studies have examined the interplay between these factors, but few such studies use an explicit trait-based framework. In this study, we use an explicit trait-based approach to identify potential mechanisms for community-level responses and to test ecological niche theory. Methods We experimentally manipulated plant communities (control, ?dominant species, ?random biomass) and nitrogen (N) inputs (control, +organic N, +inorganic N) in a fully factorial design. We predicted that traits related to plants' ability to take up different forms of soil N would differ between dominant and subordinate species, resulting in interactive effects of dominant species loss and N fertilization on plant community structure and function. The study took place in a montane meadow in the Rocky Mountains, Colorado, USA.Important findings After four years, the plant community in removal plots converged toward a species composition whose leaf and root functional traits resembled those of the previously removed dominant species. Ecosystem productivity generally increased with N addition: soil carbon efflux was ~50% greater when either form of N was added, while inorganic N addition increased aboveground biomass production by ~60% relative to controls. The increase in production was mediated by increased average height, leaf mass:area ratio and leaf dry matter content in plant communities to which we added inorganic N. Contrary to our predictions, there were no interactive effects of N fertilization and dominant species loss on plant community structure or ecosystem function. The plant community composition in this study exhibited resistance to soil N addition and, given the functional convergence we observed, was resilient to species loss. Together, our results indicate that the ability of species to compensate functionally for species loss confers resilience and maintains diversity in montane meadow communities.

The composition, structure and temporal variation of ectomycorrhizal (EM) communities associated with mountain avens (Dryas octopetala) in grass heaths of the Burren, western Ireland were assessed by using soil core sampling in two permanent plots and 30 other sites (196 cores in total). Of the 34 different EM types observed, 11 were common and constituted over 80% of the EM biomass. Four EM types, Craterellus lutescens, Tomentella sp., Dryadirhiza fulgens and Cenococcum geophilum were the most abundant as measured by EM length and frequency of occurrence in cores. The species profile and relative abundances were very similar in cores from the permanent plots and different sites in the Burren, indicating that they were all representative of the same EM community. The below-ground EM community in both plots was compared with production of basidiomes, and the latter was found to be an unreliable indicator of EM community structure. Temporal variation in the EM community was assessed by repeated core sampling of the two permanent plots over a 14-month period (between March 1998 and May 1999). No statistically significant shifts in EM abundance were found between sampling dates, probably as a consequence of the large variation in EM abundance between core samples over the sampling period. No significant relationship was found between rainfall, soil moisture or soil temperature and fluctuations in EM abundance. Patterns of total EM abundance and fluctuations in EM diversity were strongly correlated between the two permanent plots over the sampling period. Temporal fluctuations in the dominant EM type, Craterellus lutescens, were similar in both plots with respect to mycorrhizal length, biomass and relative abundance, and the patterns between both plots were positively correlated. EM diversity was negatively correlated with biomass of ectomycorrhizas of Craterellus lutescens in both plots, but it was significant only in plot 1.

Summary The interactive effects of fertilization and disturbance on plant community structure and resource availability were studied by supplying four levels of nitrogen and applying four intensities of tilling to a 30 year old field in a factorial design for 2 year. Live above-ground biomass, root biomass, and litter generally increased with nitrogen supply and decreased with disturbance. Species composition varied significantly, with annuals increasing with both nitrogen and disturbance, but with perennials unaffected by nitrogen and decreased by disturbance. Species diversity decreased with disturbance, but decreased with nitrogen only in undisturbed vegetation. Root: shoot ratios decreased with added nitrogen, leaf allocation decreased with disturbance, and flowering allocation increased. Surprisingly, stem allocation was unaffected by disturbance. This result reflected a shift from vertical stems to horizontal stems as disturbance increased. Resource measurements suggested that the vegetation responded to interactions between the treatments as well as to direct treatment effects. Variation in light penetration was reduced by fertilization in undisturbed vegetation but not in tilled plots; variability was not directly affected by disturbance. The availability of nitrogen, the limiting soil nutrient, increased with fertilization but was not significantly affected by disturbance. In contrast, the ratio of ammonium to nitrate was significantly reduced by disturbance but unaffected by supply rates, suggesting that nitrogen may have had different effects under different disturbance regimes, even though its total availability was constant. While many community responses to fertilization and disturbance conformed to those reported earlier, resource and allocation measurements indicated that their interactions are not always predictable from their separate effects.

Questions: We tested the hypothesis that if competition had a significant influence in structuring this boreal plant community, removal of neighbours, addition of fertilizer and addition of water would all benefit the transplanted seedlings. Alternatively, if facilitation had a greater influence, then removal of neighbours would be detrimental to the transplants but fertilization and watering would still be beneficial. Location: Understorey of the boreal forest in southwestern Yukon Territory, Canada (138°22′W; 61°02′N). Methods: Ten of the most common species were transplanted as seedlings into transects from which all neighbours had been removed, and also into transects with intact vegetation. We used a factorial design with two levels of watering and two levels of fertilization; this allowed us to test effects at both species and community level. Results: The summed survival and total biomass of all transplants was significantly higher in the presence of neighbours than without neighbours, indicating a facilitative effect of neighbouring plants, but there were significant increases in only six of the ten species. The combined survival and biomass of all species increased with watering, survival decreased and biomass increased with fertilization, but only two species had significant responses to fertilization: Anenome parviflora decreased and Mertensia paniculata increased in biomass. Watering increased the biomass of Achillea millefolium, Festuca altaica and Solidago multiradiata; there were also some interaction effects. Conclusions: (1) The presence of neighbours was generally facilitative. (2) Fertilization had negligible effects, and watering had minor beneficial effects. (3) This study demonstrates the importance of facilitation in structuring this boreal understorey community.

Abstract. In many species-rich hay meadows in Central Europe, the traditional extensive (low input, low output) management is no longer economical and meadows are either fertilized or abandoned. Both these practices lead to changes in species composition and usually to a loss in species diversity. The response of a species-rich meadow plant community to fertilization, mowing and removal of dominant species was studied in a manipulative factorial experiment over four years. Both species richness and seedling recruitment were positively influenced by mowing and to a lesser extent by removal of the dominant species, Molinia caerulea, and were negatively influenced by fertilization. Fertilization caused an immediate increase in community biomass. Response to removal of the dominant species was delayed by one season, continued over the whole period, and by the fourth year the biomass reached a similar value as in the plots with Molinia present. Changes in species composition were evaluated by RDA for repeated measurements. The best and only significant predictor of species response to fertilization was plant height. This shows that with increased nutrient availability, nutrient limitation weakens and competition for light becomes the decisive factor. Competition for light appears to be more asymmetric than competition for nutrients, and consequently, it is more likely to drive inferior species to extinction. This is, together with seedling recruitment limitations, the most important cause of a decrease in species richness under high nutrient levels.

The relationship between species diversity and the stability and production of trophic levels continues to receive intense scientific interest. Though facilitation is commonly cited as an essential underlying mechanism, few studies have provided evidence of the impact that indirect facilitation may have on diversity–ecosystem functioning relationships. In this laboratory study, we examined the effect of zooplankton species diversity on trophic structure (total algal and zooplankton biomass) and temporal stability of total zooplankton biomass. We utilized four species of pond zooplankton grown in either monoculture or in polyculture. When comparing responses in polycultures with responses averaged across monocultures, a positive effect of diversity on total zooplankton biomass was observed. This occurred as a result of positive facilitative effects among competing zooplankton. Daphnia pulex , a biomass dominant in monoculture, was negatively affected by the presence of interspecific competitors. In contrast, Diaphanosoma brachyurum , a species that performed poorly in monoculture, was strongly and positively affected by the presence of interspecific competitors, driving positive diversity effects on total zooplankton biomass. Positive temporal covariances among zooplankton were detected in several polyculture replicates, increasing temporal variability of total zooplankton biomass. However, this destabilizing effect was weak relative to effects of high biomass yields in polyculture which caused temporal biomass variability (as measured by the coefficient of variation) to be lower in polyculture relative to monocultures. Zooplankton diversity effects on total algal biomass were not detected. However, increased zooplankton diversity significantly altered the size structure of algae, increasing the relative abundance of large, grazer-resistant algae.

Question: What are the plant population‐ and community‐level effects of removal of dominant plant species in the shortgrass steppe? Location: The Shortgrass Steppe Long‐Term Ecological Research site in northern Colorado, USA. Methods: We annually measured plant cover and density by species for 10 years after a one‐time aboveground removal of the dominant perennial grass, Bouteloua gracilis. Removal and control plots (3 m × 3 m) were within grazed and ungrazed locations to assess the influence of grazing on recovery dynamics. Our analyses examined plant species, functional type, and community responses to removal, paying special attention to the dynamics of subdominant and rare species. Results: Basal cover of B. gracilis increased by an average of 1% per year, but there was significantly less plant cover in treatment compared to control plots for 5 years following removal. In contrast to the lower cover in treatment plots, the plant density (number of plants m?2) of certain subdominant perennial grasses, herbaceous perennial and annual forbs, a dwarf shrub, and cactus increased after removal of the dominant species, with no major change in species richness (number of species per 1 m × 1 m) or diversity. Subdominant species were more similar between years than rare species, but dominant removal resulted in significantly lower similarity of the subdominant species in the short term and increased the similarity of rare species in the long term. Conclusions: Removal of B. gracilis, the dominant perennial grass in the shortgrass steppe, increased the absolute density of subdominant plants, but caused little compensation of plant cover by other plants in the community and changes in species diversity.

Theory and empirical results suggest that high biodiversity should often cause lower temporal variability in aggregate community properties such as total community biomass. We assembled microbial communities containing 2 to 8 species of competitors in aquatic microcosms and found that the temporal change in total community biomass was positively but insignificantly associated with diversity in a constant temperature environment. There was no evidence of any trend in variable temperature environments. Three non-exclusive mechanisms might explain the lack of a net stabilising effect of species richness on temporal change. (1) A direct destabilising effect of diversity on population level variances caused some populations to vary more when embedded in more diverse communities. (2) Similar responses of the different species to environmental variability might have limited any insurance effect of increased species richness. (3) Large differences in the population level variability of different species (i.e., unevenness) could weaken the relation between species richness and community level stability. These three mechanisms may outweigh the stabilising effects of increases in total community biomass with diversity, statistical averaging, and slightly more negative covariance in more diverse communities. Our experiment and analyses advocate for further experimental investigations of diversity-variability relations.

Human-mediated nutrient amendments have widespread effects on plant communities. One of the major consequences has been the loss of species diversity under increased nutrient inputs. The loss of species can be functional group dependent with certain functional groups being more prone to decline than others. We present results from the sixth year of a long-term fertilization and litter manipulation study in an old-field grassland. We measured plant tissue chemistry (C:N ratio) to understand the role of plant physiological responses in the increase or decline of functional groups under nutrient manipulations. Fertilized plots had significantly more total aboveground biomass and live biomass than unfertilized plots, which was largely due to greater productivity by exotic C3 grasses. We found that both fertilization and litter treatments affected plant species richness. Species richness was lower on plots that were fertilized or had litter intact; species losses were primarily from forbs and non-Poaceae graminoids. C3 grasses and forbs had lower C:N ratios under fertilization with forbs having marginally greater %N responses to fertilization than grasses. Tissue chemistry in the C3 grasses also varied depending on tissue type with reproductive tillers having higher C:N ratios than vegetative tillers. Although forbs had greater tissue chemistry responses to fertilization, they did not have a similar positive response in productivity and the number of forb species is decreasing on our experimental plots. Overall, differential nutrient uptake and use among functional groups influenced biomass production and species interactions, favoring exotic C3 grasses and leading to their dominance. These data suggest functional groups may differ in their responses to anthropogenic nutrient amendments, ultimately influencing plant community composition.
