A new method is described to estimate the survival of salmonids in streams from fertilization of the eggs to the emergence of the fry. The method is compared to other techniques generally used to estimate the egg-to-fry survival: fry traps, excavation of redds, construction of artificial redds and laboratory experiments. Especially designed boxes filled with substratum and freshly fertilized eggs are buried in the stream bed. Survival is determined at three different embryological development stages: eyed stage, hatching and emergence. Boxes are planted inside the stream bed using a special injector, so that substratum alterations are minimal around the boxes. This method was tested successfully in two different studies, one in Switzerland on the brown trout, the other one in Sweden on the sea trout. 相似文献

Following exposure to a predator stimulus (a brown trout Salmo trutta ), the opercular rate of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar fry increased by 35·3 ± 11·0%(mean ± 95% CI). The time taken for opercular rate to decline to baseline levels depended upon the occurrence of any associated locomotory activity. Opercular rates of fish that dashed when exposed remained elevated for 38·2 ± 20·6 min, whereas those of individuals that did not move ('freezers') recovered within 7·2 ± 2·9 min. The duration that opercular rate remained elevated was positively correlated with the magnitude of the elevation, which was higher in 'dashers' than freezers. The maximum opercular rate in 'freezers' was similar between wild fry and hatchery‐reared fry (from wild parents). There was a significant delay, however, in hatchery compared with wild fry in the time until peak ventilatory response and onset in the decline phase. This difference in opercular response suggests that hatchery fish were slower to realize fully the potential danger from the predator. Any delay in response could be directly attributed to the effect of hatchery‐rearing environment, rather than domestication or hatchery selection effects. 相似文献

Egg-to-fry development and survival of brown trout Salmo trutta were compared in two rivers of the Pyrenean piedmont, the Nive d'Arnéguy, with few human activities, and the Nive des Aldudes, with many anthropogenic activities including 11 fish farms and two sewage treatment plants (STPs). Survival was estimated between spawning (early December) and emergence time (early March) by means of capsules, 7 cm3 in volume, filled with green eggs then inserted into the gravel of artificial redds at spawning sites. In the Nive des Aldudes, three sets of conditions were studied: a fish farm near the springs, a fish farm and an STP in a village, and a series of fish farms and an STP in a village. In each situation, two artificial redds were created upstream and two others downstream from the fish farms. In the Nive d'Arnéguy, four sites were equipped: each of the two downstream sites with two artificial redds, and the two upstream sites with one redd. Substratum characteristics (proportion of fine particles) and the quality of surface and interstitial water (oxygen content, ammonia and nitrite nitrogen) were periodically measured. There was no redd substratum difference between sites upstream and downstream of fish farms. Survival to fry emergence was higher in the Nive d'Arnéguy (63·5%) than in the Nive des Aldudes (47·7%). In this latter river, the nitrogen released from the STPs was 0·5% that from fish farms. Fish farming impaired survival close to fish farm effluents (31·6%), as compared to survival upstream (63·6%), and induced a development delay during the yolk-sac fry stage. These differences were mainly linked to a drop in the dissolved oxygen content in interstitial water induced by the nitrogen flow in surface and interstitial waters. 相似文献

Allozyme markers were used to investigate the spatial boundaries of the non‐anadromous Atlantic salmon population of Little Gull Lake, Eastern Canada. Mixed year class samples of juvenile salmon were analysed from inlet streams, upstream lakes, the outlet river and sites downstream. No evidence was found that individuals from the Lake's non‐anadromous population were present in these samples, strongly suggesting that the non‐anadromous population is confined to the lake and has a lacustrine spawning habit. 相似文献

The River Fiddich, a tributary of the R. Spey in north-east Scotland, is a spawning river for both Atlantic salmon and brown trout. Warm cooling water effluent is discharged from several distilleries at different points in the lower reaches and raises the temperature of the river 1–3°C above ambient for most of the year. Salmon and trout grow more rapidly in this region than further upstream, and juvenile salmon generally migrate a year earlier, as 2 + smolts. Available data were too few to determine whether there was a similar difference for trout. Similar studies on the R. Dullan, a tributary of the Fiddich, and on the Cromdale Burn in the same area, confirmed that the growth rate of fish is faster downstream from distillery discharge points. It is suggested that increased invertebrate production may influence the growth rate. 相似文献

Lysozyme activity, haemolytic activity, total level of IgM, and levels of antibodies against A-layer from Aeromonas salmonicida and O-antigen from Vibrio salmonicida , respectively, were determined in 77 full-sib groups of Atlantic salmon in order to evaluate their possible use as immune parameters for indirect selection to improve disease resistance. Fish from parallel full-sib groups had previously been challenged with Aeromonas salmonicida (causing furunculosis), Renibacterium salmoninarum (causing bacterial kidney disease, BKD) and Vibrio salmonicida (causing cold-water vibriosis). Heritabilities were estimated for each of the immune parameters and correlations between the least square means of the full-sib groups for the different immune parameters and survival rates in the parallel full-sib groups were determined. A significant genetic variation in lysozyme activity was found, as well as an apparent genetic association between low lysozyme activity and high survival rates. Low heritabilities and low univariate correlations with survival in the full-sib groups were estimated for all of the other immune parameters. An analysis of the multivariate associations between the full-sib mean values of the complete set of immune parameters, and survival rates in the parallel full-sib groups in each of the challenge tests, revealed that, at low levels of lysozyme activity and with low antibody titres against V. salmonicida O-antigen, increased IgM levels seemed to increase survival from furunculosis. 相似文献

Outbreeding depression was not detectable in observations of embryonic survival and of survival of smolts to adulthood relative to controls in coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch experimentally outbred over two generations by crossing fish from three widely separated populations. Survival in outbred coho salmon was not detectably less than that in second‐generation hybrid controls or second‐generation parental controls. Variation of embryonic survival was affected by the maternal source population and by individual females but not by the paternal source population or by individual males. Survival of smolts to adulthood at sea was greater in one second‐generation control group than in two others, but survival in second‐generation outbred groups was no less than in parental controls or hybrid controls. 相似文献

In order to assess the effects of pollution on recruitment of brown trout (Salmo trutta f. fario L.) exposure experiments with brown trout early life stages were performed in two differently contaminated small streams near Stuttgart, southwest Germany, and in a control situation in the laboratory. Pollution in the more polluted stream is mainly due to effluents of municipal sewage treatment plants and to the influx of surface waters from areas of intense agriculture activity. Additionally, the water carries high particle loads, especially after rainfall events. Water quality of the less polluted stream is occasionally influenced by agriculture activity in the vicinity. For the exposure of trout early life stages incubators were used, which allowed frequent examinations without serious disturbance of the exposed organisms and thus the development could be monitored over time. Compared to the less polluted stream and the control, in the more polluted stream high mortality rates, the lowest hatching success, and lowest values for growth occurred. In the less polluted stream, mortality rates were comparably low in prehatching stages, but high in hatchlings and juveniles due to heavy infestations with protozoic ectoparasites Chilodonella cyprini (Moroff, 1902) and Ichthyobodo necator (Henneguy, 1883). However, pollution-related effects were not detected in this stream. Differences in developmental rates between the different treatments were correlated with different water temperatures in the two streams and the control. For the more polluted stream, previous studies have indicated embryotoxic potentials mediated by pollutants. The present study indicates that in this steam, additionally, fine solids which infiltrate stream gravels may seriously affect development of brown trout early life stages. 相似文献

Direct day and night underwater observations of juvenile Atlantic salmon Salmo salar during summer and autumn showed a duality in response to temperature between 7 and 11° C for young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) Atlantic salmon. They were predominantly diurnal in early summer and nocturnal in late summer although water temperatures were similar. Post‐YOY Atlantic salmon did not show a strong response to temperature as they were mostly nocturnal during the study period. It is suggested that the difference in activity patterns between YOY and post‐YOY Atlantic salmon can be explained by size‐dependent trade‐off between growth and predation risk. 相似文献

Summary This work aimed to elucidate conflicting factors that may explain the narrow and synchronous emergence in salmonids. Fry are highly vulnerable to predation and stand a better chance of surviving if they emerge synchronously. On the other hand, fry that leave the gravel first should increase their chance of obtaining one of the limited number of feeding territories. The risk involved in early emergence for Atlantic salmon fry was evaluated by exposing them to predatorySalmo trutta. Yolk sac alevins were incubated in an artificial redd in order to catch them by their time of emergence. Early-, peak- and late-emerging fry were then successively marked and transferred to flume tanks in which the predators were either present from the start or not introduced until all fry had been added. When the predators were initially present, the predation pressure differed depending on the time of fry emergence, resulting in survival rates of 11.6, 44.9 and 51% in early-, peak- and late-emerging fry, respectively. By assuming that the predation rate of the three emergence groups was dependent both on time of emergence and fry density the survival rates were calculated to be 7.5, 41.1 and 53.5% in groups I, II and III, respectively. These figures corresponded well to the observed rates. When the predators were added after completed emergence the resulting survival rates were 56.9, 39.7 and 25.2% in early-, peak- and late-emerging fry, respectively. Thus, predation after complete emergence gave a survival probability that varied across the three emergence-date groups, despite being exposed to a predator during the same number of days. The presence of fish predators in combination with a limited territorial space seems to make both early and late emergence hazardous and favours synchronous swimming movements. 相似文献

The extent of genetic variation in wild Atlantic salmon parr, Sulmo salur L., from river systems in Ireland, Iceland and eastern Canada, was investigated using starch gel electrophoresis. Within Ireland, seven polymorphic enzyme loci ( sAAT-4 *, GPI-1 *, IDDH-1 *, IDDH-2 *, IDHP-3 *, MDH-3 * and mMEP-2 *) were screened in nine different rivers and nine tributaries from the River Blackwater. Significant heterogeneity in gene frequencies occurred between riverine samples and between samples from tributaries of the River Blackwater. Variation between tributaries was as great as between rivers elsewhere in the country. Levels of population differentiation were comparable to those found in other regions throughout the range of the species, and temporal stability in gene frequencies was apparent when the results were compared with previously published data. Screening of riverine samples from Iceland and eastern Canada (Newfoundland and New Brunswick) allowed the Irish results to be considered in a broader context. Irish salmon cluster in the western European group, to which may be added Icelandic populations. Salmon from eastern Canada show a high level of genetic distinctiveness from the European group. 相似文献

To test the hypothesis that the Japanese eel, Anguillu japonica , elvers in the eastern and western coasts of Taiwan are recruited from two different spawning grounds and to increase the knowledge of the early life history of the eel, the otolith microstructure and daily age of elvers collected from five estuaries in the coast of Taiwan during December 1989 through February 1990 were examined by scanning electron microscopy. The total length of elvers at arrival in the estuaries was similar among estuaries, averaging c . 56.0 mm and showed a seasonal decrease. The maximum radius of the sagittal otolith of elvers ranged from 124.46 to 181.82μm with a mean of 143.15 ± 12.72 μm. The otolith from centre to edge included an organic-rich primordium (9.20 ± 2.02 μm in diameter), a diffusively calcified core (20.94 ± 1.99 μm), and the daily growth increments; these three layers were probably deposited during the embryonic, yolk sac and feeding period respectively. The growth rate of the otolith was higher at the beginning of early life (0.5−1.0 μm day −1 ), lowest at approximately 100-days old (<0.5 μm day−1 ), and highest 1 month before arrival at the estuary (> 1.0 pm day−1 ). The mean age for elvers arriving in the estuaries of the coasts of Taiwan was approximately 170.4 ± 21.02 days. Neither the growth pattern of the otolith nor the age of elvers arriving in the estuary were significantly different among estuaries, indicating that the elvers in both eastern and western Taiwan were probably recruited from the same spawning ground. This case study sought to examine how temporal variability in hydrological and hydraulic conditions might affect the feeding opportunities of juvenile Atlantic salmon in two hydrologically contrasting years of 2002 and 2003, which were characterised by high and low flows respectively. Firstly, measures of hydraulic influence were calculated to define what might be ecologically meaningful disturbance periods during high flows. Secondly, for identifying such periods, the parameter Critical Displacement Velocity (CDV) was derived from a river discharge time series as a first approximation of the amount of time in two hydrologically extreme years when fish foraging strategies for specific age classes of juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) might be disrupted by flows. The CDV estimates the threshold velocity above which juvenile salmon are unable to hold station and it is dependent upon fish size and stream temperature. In the wet year 2002, the CDV was exceeded on 18% and 21% of days for 0+ and 1+ fish respectively. In 2003 these respective numbers fell to 6% and 15%. The data suggest that hydrological conditions during certain times of the year have the potential to affect foraging behaviour. This in turn might have implications for recruitment and growth rates for juvenile salmon in upland streams. 相似文献

An abundance index for 0+ Atlantic salmon was based on semi-quantitative electrofishing estimates at 137 sites in typical juvenile habitat throughout the River Bush (N. Ireland). 0 + abundance was linearly related to total smolt numbers migrating through a downstream trap in subsequent years ( r 2 = 0.716, P <0.001), suggesting a high degree of predictive ability. This predictive ability decreased as smolt age increased, suggesting influence of density-independent mortality. Potential application of the technique to estimate smolt production from rivers having no trapping facilities is discussed, together with sources of variability potentially affecting estimates. 相似文献

Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar L.) fry hatched from eggs transferred from high-Na to low-Na water during the eyed stage of development had a significantly higher Vmax and lower Km (P <0.01) of the sodium uptake mechanism than fry hatched from eggs incubated entirely in low-Na or high-Na water.
Fry hatched from eggs transferred to acid, high aluminium water during the eyed stage of development had a similar Vmax and Km to fry hatched from eggs incubated entirely in high- or low-Na water. Eggs incubated continuously in acid, high aluminium (low-Na) water produced fry with significantly lower Km and Vmax values than fry hatched from eggs incubated continuously in low-Na water. Eggs and fry in acid, high aluminium water continually lost sodium and mortality was 100% at 5 5 M O degree-days (2–3 weeks after hatching).
The results are discussed with respect to the influence of perivitelline fluid ion activities in eggs in acid, high aluminium water on the kinetic characteristics of sodium uptake in yolk-sac fry. Results of experiments on controlled releases of fall-fingerling Atlantic salmon to lacustrine habitats in Newfoundland are reviewed in terms of survival during freshwater residence and smolt yield per unit of standing water habitat. Average survival from parr to smolt in three consecutive annual releases was 12.9% and we conclude that the quality of fall-fingerling salmon, produced from our semi-natural rearing techniques, was satisfactory. Year-class survival decreased progressively with consecutive releases. Rate of increase in juvenile salmon biomass remained stable over the duration of the study, suggesting that the average annual biomass of 1.6 kg ha–1 of juvenile salmon released did not exceed habitat carrying capacity. Precocity did not appear to represent a significant deterrent to fall-fingerling survival. Annual smolt yield (by year-class) from stocking ranged from 53 to 130 ha–1 (mean = 77 smolts ha–1). 相似文献
