The biological roots of morality   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The question whether ethical behavior is biologically determined may refer either to thecapacity for ethics (e.i., the proclivity to judge human actions as either right or wrong), or to the moralnorms accepted by human beings for guiding their actions. My theses are: (1) that the capacity for ethics is a necessary attribute of human nature; and (2) that moral norms are products of cultural evolution, not of biological evolution.Humans exhibits ethical behavior by nature because their biological makeup determines the presence of the three necessary, and jointly sufficient, conditions for ethical behavior: (i) the ability to anticipate the consequences of one's own actions; (ii) the ability to make value judgements; and (iii) the ability to choose between alternative courses of action. Ethical behavior came about in evolution not because it is adaptive in itself, but as a necessary consequece of man's eminent intellectual abilities, which are an attribute directly promoted by natural selection.Since Darwin's time there have been evolutionists proposing that the norms of morality are derived from biological evolution. Sociobiologists represent the most recent and most subtle version of that proposal. The sociobiologists' argument is that human ethical norms are sociocultural correlates of behaviors fostered by biological evolution. I argue that such proposals are misguided and do not escape the naturalistic fallacy. The isomorphism between the behaviors promoted by natural selection and those sanctioned by moral norms exist only with respect to the consequences of the behaviors; the underlying causations are completely disparate. This article is based on a paper presented at the International Symposium onBiological Models of Human Action, Palma de Mallorca, Spain, 16–18 December 1985.  相似文献

The sharp distinction between biological traits and culturally based traits, which had long been standard in evolutionary approaches to behavior, was blurred in the early 1980s by mathematical models that allowed a co‐dependent evolution of genetic transmission and cultural information. Niche‐construction theory has since added another contrast to standard evolutionary theory, in that it views niche construction as a cause of evolutionary change rather than simply a product of selection. While offering a new understanding of the coevolution of genes, culture, and human behavior, niche‐construction models also invoke multivariate causality, which require multiple time series to resolve. The empirical challenge lies in obtaining time‐series data on causal pathways involved in the coevolution of genes, culture, and behavior. This is a significant issue in archeology, where time series are often sparse and causal behaviors are represented only by proxies in the material record.  相似文献

Individuals living in the San Pedro de Atacama oases and the neighboring upper Loa River Valley of northern Chile experienced the collapse of an influential foreign polity, environmental decline, and the appearance of a culturally distinct group during the Late Intermediate Period (ca. AD 1,100–1,400). We investigate cultural heterogeneity at the Loa site of Caspana through analyses of strontium and oxygen isotopes, cranial modification styles, and mortuary behavior, integrating biological aspects of identity, particularly geographic origins, with cultural aspects of identity manifested in body modification and mortuary behavior. We test the hypothesis that the Caspana population (n = 66) represents a migrant group, as supported by archeological and ethnographic evidence, rather than a culturally distinct local group. For Caspana archeological human tooth enamel, mean 87Sr/86Sr = 0.70771 ± 0.00038 (1σ, n = 30) and mean δ18Oc(V‐PDB) = ?3.9 ± 0.6‰ (1σ, n = 16); these isotopic data suggest that only one individual lived outside the region. Material culture suggests that the individuals buried at Caspana shared some cultural affinity with the San Pedro oases while maintaining distinct cultural traditions. Finally, cranial modification data show high frequencies of head shaping [92.4% (n = 61/65)] and an overwhelming preference for annular modification [75.4% (n = 46/61)], contrasting sharply with practices in the San Pedro area. Based on multiple lines of evidence, we argue that, rather than representing a group of altiplano migrants, the Caspana population existed in the region for some time. However, cranial modification styles and mortuary behavior that are markedly distinct from patterns in surrounding areas raise the possibility of cultural heterogeneity and cultural fissioning. The skull of neotenic individuals of the Alpine Newt Triturus alpestris from the locality Drakolimni (Greece) is described on the basis of models made from magnified serial frontal sections. In order to recognize features associated with neoteny and paedomorphosis, the results were compared with normal development of contemporary Triturus and of other Caudata. The neotenic larvae from Greece correspond to advanced stages of metamorphosis in normal development of Triturus alpestris. Comparison with salamandrids from the Tertiary of Europe in which the hyobranchial skeleton was preserved, namely Brachycormus noachicus, Chelotriton paradoxus, and Palaeopleurodeles hauffi, revealed that both latter taxa were completely metamorphosed adults anatomically similar to their contemporary relatives Tylototriton, Echinotriton, and Pleurodeles, whereas Brachycormus, though apparently related to Chelotriton, was a neotenic amphibian. This is suggested by its incompletely metamorphosed but ossified hyobranchial skeleton. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Studies of well-being have been dominated by perspectives that stem from Western, health-science notions of individual’s health and psychological development. In recent times, however, there has been a developing sensitivity to the cultural and place-specific contexts affecting the health and well-being of contrasting populations in different environments. Drawing on these advances, this article explores the potential in conceptualizing a place-based notion of well-being that recognizes the cultural and environmental specificity of well-being for specific populations in a given setting. We argue that a geographical approach to well-being enables the linking of culture and environment for future indigenous research into both ecosystems and human health. Taking the case of an indigenous population, we identify the contexts that affect Maori well-being and we argue that key sociocultural and environmental dimensions need to be integrated for a culturally appropriate approach to Maori well-being.  相似文献

Believing that healthcare outcomes will be more satisfying if the patients' cultural knowledge and values are understood and integrated appropriately in care planning, the author proposes a culturally competent ethical decision making model based on human rights--the fundamental right of individuals, families, groups, and populations to healthcare that is meaningful, supportive, and beneficial--and a reconceptualization of ethical principles to include the values and assumptions of clients. The ideal result is culturally congruent healthcare in which practitioners learn about their clients' lifeways and work with them to find satisfying ways to resolve clinical and ethical issues.  相似文献

Many sensory processing regions of the central brain undergo critical periods of experience‐dependent plasticity. During this time ethologically relevant information shapes circuit structure and function. The mechanisms that control critical period timing and duration are poorly understood, and this is of special importance for those later periods of development, which often give rise to complex cognitive functions such as social behavior. Here, we review recent findings in Drosophila, an organism that has some unique experimental advantages, and introduce novel views for manipulating plasticity in the post‐embryonic brain. Critical periods in larval and young adult flies resemble classic vertebrate models with distinct onset and termination, display clear connections with complex behaviors, and provide opportunities to control the time course of plasticity. These findings may extend our knowledge about mechanisms underlying extension and reopening of critical periods, a concept that has great relevance to many human neurodevelopmental disorders.  相似文献

Spread of costly prestige-seeking behavior by social learning   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Mathematical and simulation models of cultural transmission in a population where individuals may differ in their social status are developed. High-status individuals are assumed to be more influential to others but no more fertile or viable than low-status individuals. Analysis of the models suggests that culturally transmitted values, beliefs, and preferences that cause individuals to engage in prestige-seeking behavior can sometimes invade the population, even if that behavior reduces the net reproductive success of the prestige seekers. It is argued that some of the seemingly maladaptive behaviors observed in human societies may be a result of cultural evolution based on the human capacity for social learning, rather than a product of the "time lag" before the evolutionary modification of the human predisposition in response to the recent drastic changes in the environment.  相似文献

Comparison of metamorphosis of skull and hyobranchial system in two species of neotenic salamanders reveals two different types of neoteny. Ambystoma talpoideum is completely neotenic owing to delayed metamorphosis. Notophthalmus viridescens exhibits limited neoteny as a result of incomplete metamorphosis. Morphological details of neoteny are compared to life history in both species in order to discuss the ecological morphology of the two neotenic strategies. Comparisons to Taricha granulosa, Triturus vulgaris, and Ambystoma gracile indicate that these two strategies are widely employed and may represent familial patterns.  相似文献

American anthropology is distinguished by a four-fields approach in which biological, cultural, archaeological, and linguistic dimensions of behavior are examined in evolutionary and cross-cultural perspective. Nevertheless, assumptions of mind-body dualism pervade scholarly thinking in anthropology and have prevented the development of a truly integrated science of human experience. This dualism is most exemplified by the lack of consideration of the role of the brain in both “physical” and “mental” processes, including phenomena labeled as cultural. In this paper, I review neural mechanisms of learning, communication, and emotion, and discuss the implications of these findings for culture theory. Termite imagines of Zootermopsis angusticollis (Hagen), while still in the colony as winged individuals, do not show ovary development, although vitellogenin is present in the blood at low levels. When removed from the colony, artificially dealated, and paired, vitellogenin levels rise: subsequently ovaries develop resulting in oviposition approximately 15–16 days after removal from the colony. Imagines removed from the colony, dealated and held together in a heterosexual group, however, show little or no ovary development after 25 days, although vitellogenin is present in the haemolymph in low levels. Newly developed neotenic reproductives, on the other hand, removed from the colonly 1–2 days after the neotenic moult, and isolated in heterosexual pairs for 60 days, had ovaries which did not become larger than 0.02 mm3, and no eggs were laid. This is in contrast to the normal ovary development of neotenic reproductives produced in groups of larvae, as described earlier. Vitellogenin levels in isolated pairs of neotenics were low until 25 days after isolation, while vitellogenin levels increased 7–9 days after the moult in female neotenics kept in a colony with larvae. The results of this study on ovarian development and vitellogenesis in neotenic and adult reproductives reflect the normal biology of the two reproductive types where the latter leave the colony to found new colonies, while neotenics become sexually mature within the colony in which they developed.  相似文献

Behavior and Differentiation of the Neural Stem Cells in vivo   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
We studied the behavior and differentiation of human and rat neural stem cells after transplantation in the adult rat brain without immunosuppression. The rat stem cells were isolated from the presumptive neocortex of 15-day-old embryos. The human cells were isolated from the ventricular brain zone of 9-week-old embryos and cultivated for two weeks before transplantation. The results of histomorphological studies suggest that the microenvironment factors did not suppress the growth or development of transplanted stem cells. Both rat and human embryonic multipotent neural cells showed similar behavior and differentiation into neurons and glial cells. After transplantation, they continued to mitotically divide and migrated from the graft area to the surrounding tissue of a recipient brain. The presumptive glial cells migrated preferentially along the capillaries and fibrous structures of the recipient brain. Similar behavior of the rat and human neural stem cells in the microenvironment of the recipient adult rat brain and the absence of immune reaction suggest that the transplantation into the rat brain may serve as a model for studying the developmental biology of the human stem cells.  相似文献

Genetic variation is described at 15 loci in 2 neotenic and 12 nonneotenic populations of red-spotted newts. Though high levels of genetic similarity (I=0.990) were found among all populations, allele frequencies at six of the eight most polymorphic loci show significant heterogeneity across populations. Change in allele frequencies at two of these loci (Pep-2 and Ldh-1) is significantly correlated with latitude. Interspecific homologies are established for newt peptidases based on substrate specificities and lactate dehydrogenases based on tissue distribution, thermal stability, and kinetic properties. Nonneotenic populations are highly variable (H=0.157) and neotenic populations are only slightly, but significantly, less variable (H=0.120). The high levels of heterozygosity detected in nonneotenic populations may result from large effective population size and/or environmental heterogeneity. The unexpectedly high heterozygosity values obtained for the neotenic populations may indicate adult dispersal or the presence of some previously undetected red efts at these localities. In any case, a major change in life history has apparently had little effect on the genetic structure of these populations. This research was supported by grants from the Blakeslee Fund of Smith College.  相似文献

Thyroid hormones regulate many aspects of brain development and function, and alterations in the levels of thyroid hormone action lead to abnormal anxiety‐ and depression‐like behaviors. A complement of factors in the brain function independently of circulating levels of hormone to strictly controlled local thyroid hormone signaling. A critical factor is the type 3 deiodinase (DIO3), which is located in neurons and protects the brain from excessive thyroid hormone. Here, we examined whether a local increase in brain thyroid hormone action secondary to DIO3 deficiency is of consequence for social behaviors. Although we did not observe alterations in sociability, Dio3?/? mice of both sexes exhibited a significant increase in aggression‐related behaviors and mild deficits in olfactory function. In addition, 85% of Dio3?/? dams manifested no pup‐retrieval behavior and increased aggression toward the newborns. The abnormal social behaviors of Dio3?/? mice were associated with sexually dimorphic alterations in the physiology of oxytocin (OXT) and arginine vasopressin (AVP), 2 neuropeptides with important roles in determining social interactions. These alterations included low adult serum levels of OXT and AVP, and an abnormal expression of Oxt, Avp and their receptors in the neonatal and adult hypothalamus. Our results demonstrate that DIO3 is essential for normal aggression and maternal behaviors, and indicate that abnormal local regulation of thyroid hormone action in the brain may contribute to the social deficits associated with neurodevelopmental disorders.  相似文献

Using concepts of evolutionary game theory, this paper presents a critique of ethical intuitionism, or non-naturalism, in its cognitivist and objectivist interpretation. While epistemological considerations suggest that human rational learning through experience provides no basis for objective moral knowledge, it is argued below that modern evolutionary theory explains why this is so, i.e., why biological organisms do not evolve so as to experience objective preferences and obligations. The difference between the modes of the cognition of objective and of valuative environmental attributes is explained with reference to different modes of natural selection acting on the cognitive apparatus of the organism. The negative implications are pointed out which the observable diversity of intraspecific behavioural adaptations and of cultural values has for the cognitivist, objectivist foundation of ethics. Eventually a non-cognitivist alternative to ethical intuitionism is outlined in terms of empirical authority relations, with the ritualisation of dominance-submission patterns as the evolutionary origin of human charismatic authority.  相似文献

The mechanisms by which human stem cells self‐organise into brain‐like tissues in 3D organoid culture are poorly understood. In this issue of The EMBO Journal, Renner and Lancaster et al demonstrate that in the absence of external stimuli, human cerebral organoids develop large forebrain structures that display specific landmarks of spatial and temporal patterning, including signalling centres producing known morphogens. The generation of cerebral organoids is therefore likely to reflect normal brain development.  相似文献

In contrast to hominin encephalization, the final Pleistocene and Holocene reduction in cranial volume has attracted very little attention and remains unexplained. Here it is examined in the light of current neuroscientific and archaeological understanding, and it is shown that the most parsimonious explanation is via the domestication hypothesis of recent humans. Accordingly, rapid atrophy of the brain is partly explained by the culturally based process of sexual selection, first detectable in late robust Homo sapiens perhaps 40,000 years ago. Furthermore it is suggested that this deleterious process of neotenization and brain atrophy was compensated for by the concurrent development of exograms, i.e. means of storing memory outside the brain. Consequently most of human memory and cultural information is now stored external to the brain, which has altered that organ significantly and facilitated a cultural complexity that would be impossible to maintain by biological memory alone. The escalating use of exograms, neotenization and reduction in cranial volume all appear to co-occur with numerous other changes to the human genome.  相似文献
