We investigated bacterial and archaeal communities along an ice‐fed surficial hot spring at Kverkfjöll volcano—a partially ice‐covered basaltic volcano at Vatnajökull glacier, Iceland, using biomolecular (16S rRNA, apsA, mcrA, amoA, nifH genes) and stable isotope techniques. The hot spring environment is characterized by high temperatures and low dissolved oxygen concentrations at the source (68°C and <1 mg/L (±0.1%)) changing to lower temperatures and higher dissolved oxygen downstream (34.7°C and 5.9 mg/L), with sulfate the dominant anion (225 mg/L at the source). Sediments are comprised of detrital basalt, low‐temperature alteration phases and pyrite, with <0.4 wt. % total organic carbon (TOC). 16S rRNA gene profiles reveal that organisms affiliated with Hydrogenobaculum (54%–87% bacterial population) and Thermoproteales (35%–63% archaeal population) dominate the micro‐oxic hot spring source, while sulfur‐oxidizing archaea (Sulfolobales, 57%–82%), and putative sulfur‐oxidizing and heterotrophic bacterial groups dominate oxic downstream environments. The δ13Corg (‰ V‐PDB) values for sediment TOC and microbial biomass range from ?9.4‰ at the spring's source decreasing to ?12.6‰ downstream. A reverse effect isotope fractionation of ~3‰ between sediment sulfide (δ34S ~0‰) and dissolved water sulfate (δ34S +3.2‰), and δ18O values of ~ ?5.3‰ suggest pyrite forms abiogenically from volcanic sulfide, followed by abiogenic and microbial oxidation. These environments represent an unexplored surficial geothermal environment analogous to transient volcanogenic habitats during putative “snowball Earth” scenarios and volcano–ice geothermal environments on Mars.  相似文献

The shanny Lipophrys pholis is an intertidal fish commonly found in Portuguese coastal waters. Spawning takes place from early autumn to mid spring, after which demersal eggs hatch and larvae disperse along the coast. Two to three months later, young juveniles return to the tide pools to settle. However, information on fish movement, habitat connectivity and population structure is scarce for this species. One hundred and twenty early juveniles (16–35?mm) were collected in April 2014 from six rocky beaches along the western and south Portuguese coasts (Agudela, Cabo do Mundo, Boa Nova, Peniche, Sines and Olhos de Água). δ18O and δ13C were determined by isotope-ratio mass spectrometry. Data were analysed to determine whether isotopic signatures could be used to assess the degree of separation between individuals collected from different locations. Mean δ13C and δ18O values ranged from ?0.02‰ to 1.14‰ and ?7.77‰ to ?6.62‰, respectively. Both seawater temperature and salinity caused differences in otolith δ18O among the four main sampling areas. The variation among areas in δ13C was most likely related to slight differences in the diet, growth and metabolism of fish. The distinct isotopic signatures, at least for the northern and central areas, suggested low levels of connectivity across large spatial scales during the juvenile stage. Furthermore, similar isotopic signatures within the same area indicated some degree of larval oceanic retention at short spatial scales. This study suggests that stable isotope records in otoliths could provide information about the home residency, movements and habitat connectivity of intertidal fishes.  相似文献

The δ15N and δ13C signatures of major organic matter (OM) pools were measured across chemical and hydrologic gradients in a large (58,800 ha) subtropical wetland to evaluate whether stable isotopes were useful indicators of environmental change. Once a rainfall-driven wetland, the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge in the Florida Everglades now receives agricultural and urban drainage that has increased phosphorus (P) and mineral loads around the wetland perimeter. Additionally, water impoundment at the southern end has produced a latitudinal hydrologic gradient, with extended hydroperiods in the south and overdrained conditions in the north.Detritus (?4.8‰ to 8.6‰), floc (?1.4‰ to 3.6‰), and metaphyton (?6.6‰ to +7.4‰) δ15N declined southward with changes in hydrology as indicated by water depth. This pattern was attributed to higher mineralization rates under shorter hydroperiods. These signatures were also strongly correlated with increased nutrient and mineral loading. Rooted macrophyte δ15N, by contrast, appeared more responsive to soil nutrient pools. Cattail (?8.9‰ to +7.7‰) was restricted to the wetland perimeter and had the widest δ15N range, which was positively correlated with soil P. Sawgrass (?5.3‰ to +7.7‰) occurred across most of the wetland, but its δ15N was not strongly correlated to any gradient. Patterns for δ13C were more strongly related to chemical gradients caused by canal intrusion than to latitude or hydrology. Again, metaphyton and detrital signatures were more sensitive to water chemistry changes than macrophytes. This pattern is consistent with their locations at the soil–water (detritus-floc), and air–water (metaphyton) interface. Metaphyton δ13C (?36.1‰ to ?21.5‰) which had the broadest range, was affected by DIC source and pool size. In contrast, cattail δ13C (?28.7‰ to ?26.4‰) was more closely related to soil P and sawgrass δ13C (?30.1‰ to ?24.5‰) was not related to any environmental gradient except latitude. There was no correlation between the two isotopes for any OM pool except cattail. These results indicate that isotopic signatures of microbial (metaphyton and detrital) pools are more responsive to changes in wetland hydrology and water chemistry while those of rooted macrophytes respond only to the extent that soil chemistry is altered. Rooted macrophytes also differ in the sensitivity of their isotopic signatures to environmental change. The selection of OM pools for isotopic analysis will, therefore, affect the sensitivity of the analysis and the resulting patterns. Furthermore, δ15N may be more robust and interpretable than δ13C as an indicator of ecosystem change in wetlands exposed to multiple or complex anthropogenic gradients.  相似文献

Jelly-like microbial mat samples were collected from benthic surfaces at the St. Petersburg methane seep located in Central Baikal. The concentrations of certain ions, specifically chloride, bromide, sulphate, acetate, iron, calcium, and magnesium, were 2–40 times higher in the microbial mats than those in the pore and bottom water. A large number of diatom valves, cyanobacteria, and filamentous, rod-shaped and coccal microorganisms were found in the samples of bacterial mats using light, epifluorescence and scanning microscopy.Comparative analysis of a 16S rRNA gene fragment demonstrated the presence of bacteria and archaea belonging to the following classes and phyla: Betaproteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Deltaproteobacteria, Verrucomicrobia, Cytophaga-Flavobacteria-Bacteroidetes, Cyanobacteria, and Euryarchaeota. The chemical composition and phylogenetic structure of the microbial community showed that the life activity of the mat occurs due to methane and its derivatives involved. Values of δ13C for the microbial mats varied from ?73.6‰ to ?65.8‰ and for animals from ?68.9‰ to ?36.6‰. Functional genes of the sequential methane oxidation (pmoA and mxaF) and different species of methanotrophic bacteria inhabiting cold ecosystems were recorded in the total DNA. Like in other psychroactive communities, the destruction of organic substances forming formed as a result of methanotrophy, terminates at the stage of acetate formation in the microbial mats of Lake Baikal (1,400 m depth). Its further transformation is limited by hydrogen content and carried out in the subsurface layers of sediments.  相似文献

Pacific halibut, Hippoglossus stenolepis, is one of the most important commercial groundfish and is managed as a single coast-wide population from Alaska to northern California. Nevertheless, genetic investigations did not show success in detecting the population structure of the species. Here I report stable oxygen and carbon isotope analyses (δ18O and δ13C) in otoliths to discriminate the stock differences from two sample locations between the Washington coast (WC) and the northern Puget Sound (PS), and two sample years in 2007 and 2008. In general the δ18O values of halibut otoliths from WC ranged from ?0.2 to 1.8‰, higher than the PS samples from ?0.5 to 1.4‰. In contrast, the δ13C values from WC ranged from ?3.6 to ?1.0‰, lower than the PS samples from ?3.2 to ?1.2‰. Results from the otolith nuclei (age-0 halibut) and the 8th (the earliest maturity age for male halibut) and edge otolith rings (the latest location where the fish lived) showed significant differences between halibut samples from PS and WC. In particular, the sample location difference (between PS and WC) in both δ13C and δ18O data was significant and markedly larger than the sample year difference (between 2007 and 2008). These isotopic signatures provide evidence that the PS halibut may belong to a distinct stock that is significantly different from WC halibut.  相似文献

Biogenic calcretes associated with a regional Cretaceous to Paleogene subaerial unconformity and an intraformational composite (polygenic) surface in Upper Cretaceous intra-platform peritidal successions in central Dalmatia and eastern Istria, Croatia (Adriatic-Dinaridic Carbonate Platform), were analyzed for their δ13C and δ18O signatures in order to provide insight into the conditions of subaerial exposure and calcrete development. The distinctly negative δ13C signatures of biogenic calcretes marking the regional subaerial unconformity differ considerably from the δ13C values of the host marine limestones. This indicates carbon isotope exchange of primary marine CaCO3 with CO2 released by root and rhizomicrobial respiration and subsequent precipitation of pedogenic calcrete. The range of δ13C (from ?13.1 to ?8.2 ‰ Vienna PeeDee Belemnite standard, VPDB) and δ18O (from ?10.1 to ?6.1 ‰ VPDB) values of calcretes are similar to those reported from calcretes elsewhere, and the δ13C values of biogenic calcretes with typical Microcodium aggregates (?13.1 to ?12.3 ‰ VPDB) at the ?ibenik locality are very close to, or at the lower limit of, values for soil carbonates formed in isotopic equilibrium with soil CO2. These values are expected for authigenic pedogenic carbonates formed under the influence of C3 plant communities, without influence from heavier carbon from pre-existing carbonate and lack of input of atmospheric CO2. Such low δ13C values support the interpretation of Microcodium aggregates as being precipitated under a direct biological control within the soil, although the relationship between formation mechanisms and stable isotope signatures of Microcodium needs further investigation. The δ13C values (?4.4 to ?3.6 ‰ VPDB) of rhizogenic calcretes formed inside firmground Thalassinoides burrows of the composite surface at the ?ibenik locality are more negative than the δ13C values of the host marine limestones, which confirms that the composite surface went through a phase of meteoric pedo(dia)genesis. However, the overall δ13C values of calcretes are less negative than expected, which might reflect contamination from associated primary marine carbonate. This study represents the first detailed stable isotope investigation of calcretes from carbonate successions of the External Dinarides, and the results may be applied to discontinuities present in other shallow-water carbonate rock successions.  相似文献

Stable isotope natural abundance measurements integrate across several biogeochemical processes in ecosystem N and C dynamics. Here, we report trends in natural isotope abundance (δ13C and δ15N in plant and soil) along a climosequence of 33 Nothofagus forest stands located within Patagonia, Southern Argentina. We measured 28 different abiotic variables (both climatic variables and soil properties) to characterize environmental conditions at each of the 33 sites. Foliar δ13C values ranged from ?35.4‰ to ?27.7‰, and correlated positively with foliar δ15N values, ranging from ?3.7‰ to 5.2‰. Soil δ13C and δ15N values reflected the isotopic trends of the foliar tissues and ranged from ?29.8‰ to ?25.3‰, and ?4.8‰ to 6.4‰, respectively, with no significant differences between Nothofagus species (Nothofagus pumilio, Nothofagus antarctica, Nothofagus betuloides). Principal component analysis and multiple regressions suggested that mainly water availability variables (mean annual precipitation), but not soil properties, explained between 42% and 79% of the variations in foliar and soil δ13C and δ15N natural abundance, which declined with increased moisture supply. We conclude that a decline in water use efficiency at wetter sites promotes both the depletion of heavy C and N isotopes in soil and plant biomass. Soil δ13C values were higher than those of the plant tissues and this difference increased as annual precipitation increased. No such differences were apparent when δ15N values in soil and plant were compared, which indicates that climatic differences contributed more to the overall C balance than to the overall N balance in these forest ecosystems.  相似文献

Non-climatic variations in the oxygen isotopic compositions of plants   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The 18O content of leaf water strongly influences the 18O contents of atmospheric CO2 and O2. The 18O signatures of these atmospheric gases, in turn, emerge as important indicators of large-scale gas exchange processes. Better understanding of the factors that influence the isotopic composition of leaf water is still required, however, for the quantitative utilization of these tracers. The 18O enrichment of leaf water relative to local meteoric water, is known to reflect climatic conditions. Less is known about the extent variations in the 18O content of leaf water are influenced by nonclimatic, species-specific characteristics. In a collection of 90 plant species from all continents grown under the same climatic conditions in the Jerusalem Botanical Garden we observed variations of about 9‰ in the δ18O values of stem water, δs, and of about 14‰ in the mid-day δ18O enrichment of bulk leaf water, δLW–δs. Differences between δ18O values predicted by a conventional evaporation model, δM, and δLW ranged between – 3.3‰ and + 11.8‰. The δ18O values of water in the chloroplasts (δch) in leaves of 10 selected plants were estimated from on-line CO2 discrimination measurements. Although much uncertainty is still involved in these estimates, the results indicated that δch can significantly deviate from δM in species with high leaf peclet number. The δ18O values of bulk leaf water significantly correlated with δ18O values of leaf cellulose (directly) and with instantaneous water use efficiency (A/E, inversely). Differences in isotopic characteristics among conventionally defined vegetation types were not significant, except for conifers that significantly differed from shrubs in δ18O and δ13C values of cellulose and in their peclet numbers, and from deciduous woodland species in their δ18O and δ13C values of cellulose. The results indicated that predictions of the δ18O values of leaf water (δLW, δM and δch) could be improved by considering plant species-specific characteristics.  相似文献

This study investigated the trophic shift of young‐of‐the‐year (YOY) thinlip grey mullet Liza ramada and golden grey mullet Liza aurata during their recruitment in a salt marsh located on the European Atlantic Ocean coast. Stable‐isotope signatures (δ13C and δ15N) of the fishes followed a pattern, having enrichments in 13C and 15N with increasing fork length (LF): δ13C in fishes < 30 mm ranged from ?19.5 to ?15.0‰, whereas in fishes > 30 mm δ13C ranged from ?15.8 to ?12.7‰, closer to the level in salt‐marsh food resources. Large differences between the δ15N values of mugilids and those of food sources (6·0‰ on average) showed that YOY are secondary consumers, similar to older individuals, when feeding in the salt marsh. YOY mugilids shift from browsing on pelagic prey to grazing on benthic resources from the salt marsh before reaching 30 mm LF. The results highlight the role of European salt marshes as nurseries for juvenile mugilids.  相似文献

In modern microbial mats, hydrogen sulfide shows pronounced sulfur isotope (δ34S) variability over small spatial scales (~50‰ over <4 mm), providing information about microbial sulfur cycling within different ecological niches in the mat. In the geological record, the location of pyrite formation, overprinting from mat accretion, and post‐depositional alteration also affect both fine‐scale δ34S patterns and bulk δ34Spyrite values. We report μm‐scale δ34S patterns in Proterozoic samples with well‐preserved microbial mat textures. We show a well‐defined relationship between δ34S values and sulfide mineral grain size and type. Small pyrite grains (<25 μm) span a large range, tending toward high δ34S values (?54.5‰ to 11.7‰, mean: ?14.4‰). Larger pyrite grains (>25 μm) have low but equally variable δ34S values (?61.0‰ to ?10.5‰, mean: ?44.4‰). In one sample, larger sphalerite grains (>35 μm) have intermediate and essentially invariant δ34S values (?22.6‰ to ?15.6‰, mean: ?19.4‰). We suggest that different sulfide mineral populations reflect separate stages of formation. In the first stage, small pyrite grains form near the mat surface along a redox boundary where high rates of sulfate reduction, partial closed‐system sulfate consumption in microenvironments, and/or sulfide oxidation lead to high δ34S values. In another stage, large sphalerite grains with low δ34S values grow along the edges of pore spaces formed from desiccation of the mat. Large pyrite grains form deeper in the mat at slower sulfate reduction rates, leading to low δ34Ssulfide values. We do not see evidence for significant 34S‐enrichment in bulk pore water sulfide at depth in the mat due to closed‐system Rayleigh fractionation effects. On a local scale, Rayleigh fractionation influences the range of δ34S values measured for individual pyrite grains. Fine‐scale analyses of δ34Spyrite patterns can thus be used to extract environmental information from ancient microbial mats and aid in the interpretation of bulk δ34Spyrite records.  相似文献

1. The variability in the stable isotope signatures of carbon and nitrogen (δ13C and δ15N) in different phytoplankton taxa was studied in one mesotrophic and three eutrophic lakes in south‐west Finland. The lakes were sampled on nine to 16 occasions over 2–4 years and most of the time were dominated by cyanobacteria and diatoms. A total of 151 taxon‐specific subsamples covering 18 different phytoplankton taxa could be isolated by filtration through a series of sieves and by flotation/sedimentation, followed by microscopical identification and screening for purity. 2. Substantial and systematic differences between phytoplankton taxa, seasons and lakes were observed for both δ13C and δ15N. The values of δ13C ranged from ?34.4‰ to ?5.9‰ and were lowest in chrysophytes (?34.4‰ to ?31.3‰) and diatoms (?30.6‰ to ?26.6‰). Cyanobacteria were most variable (?32.4‰ to ?5.9‰), including particularly high values in the nostocalean cyanobacterium Gloeotrichia echinulata (?14.4‰ to ?5.9‰). For δ13C, the taxon‐specific amplitude of temporal changes within a lake was usually <1–8‰ (<1–4‰ for microalgae alone and <1–8‰ for cyanobacteria alone), whereas the amplitude among taxa within a water sample was up to 31‰. 3. The values of δ15N ranged from ?2.1‰ to 12.8‰ and were high in chrysophytes, dinophytes and diatoms, but low in the nitrogen‐fixing cyanobacteria Anabaena spp., Aphanizomenon spp. and G. echinulata (?2.1‰ to 1.6‰). Chroococcalean cyanobacteria ranged from ?1.4‰ to 8.9‰. For δ15N, the taxon‐specific amplitude of temporal changes within a lake was 2–6‰, (2–6‰ for microalgae alone and 2–4‰ for cyanobacteria alone) and the amplitude among taxa within a water sample was up to 11‰. 4. The isotopic signatures of phytoplankton changed systematically with their physical and chemical environment, most notably with the concentrations of nutrients, but correlations were non‐systematic and site‐specific. 5. The substantial variability in the isotopic signatures of phytoplankton among taxa, seasons and lakes complicates the interpretation of isotopic signatures in lacustrine food webs. However, taxon‐specific values and seasonal patterns showed some consistency among years and may eventually be predictable.  相似文献

Recent studies have shown that the tussock grass Stipa tenacissima L. facilitates the establishment of late-successional shrubs, in what constitutes the first documented case of facilitation of woody plants by grasses. With the aim of increasing our knowledge of this interaction, in the present study we investigated the effects of S. tenacissima on the foliar δ13C, δ15N, nitrogen concentration, and carbon : nitrogen ratio of introduced seedlings of Pistacia lentiscus L., Quercus coccifera L., and Medicago arborea L. in a semi-arid Mediterranean steppe. Six months after planting, the values of δ13C ranged between -26.9‰ and -29.6‰, whereas those of δ15N ranged between -1.9‰ and 2.7‰. The foliar C : N ratio ranged between 10.7 and 53.5, and the nitrogen concentration ranged between 1.0% and 4.4%. We found no significant effect of the microsite provided by S. tenacissima on these variables in any of the species evaluated. The values of δ13C were negatively correlated with predawn water potentials in M. arborea and were positively correlated with relative growth rate in Q. coccifera. The values of δ15N were positively correlated with the biomass allocation to roots in the latter species. The present results suggest that the modification of environmental conditions in the are surrounding S. tenacissima was not strong enough to modify the foliar isotopic and nitrogen concentration of shrubs during the early stages after planting.  相似文献

  1. Groundwater and surface water‐fed systems act as biodiversity hotspots and ecological refuges and evolutionary refugia in arid regions. Groundwater‐dominated systems are sustained by underground aquifers that are recharged by rain that has fallen in the distant past, while surface water‐dominated systems are fed by recent local rain or floods. Some waterbodies are fed by a mixture of these sources. Perennial, groundwater‐dominated systems will act as refuges and refugia under future rainfall declines associated with global warming. We sought to identify climate refugia, based on groundwater dominance, by using isotope hydrology to characterise water samples collected by citizen scientists across arid central Australia.
  2. There is a linear relationship between hydrogen isotopes (2H/1H, δ2H) and oxygen isotopes (18O/16O, δ18O) in rainfall. This relationship is known as the meteoric water line (MWL). By comparing our samples with the Australian MWL, and developing a local evaporation line, we were able to test the hypotheses that groundwater‐dominated systems will follow the Australian MWL while temporary systems follow the local evaporation line, and, accordingly, distinguish between groundwater and surface water‐dominated systems. The isotopic composition of samples collected over a 36‐month period was determined using isotope ratio infrared spectrometry. The electrical conductivity of each sample was recorded to determine where freshwater is available for biota within this arid region.
  3. Over 240 water samples were collected from 62 waterbodies and seven bores (groundwater wells) spanning an area of more than 250,000 km2. Approximately 75% of the samples were collected by citizen scientists and 25% by research scientists.
  4. Twenty groundwater‐dominated waterbodies, characterised by a small range of δ2H and δ18O values (c. ?55 to ?20‰ and c. ?9 to ?3‰, respectively) clustered around the long‐term mean composition of rainfall (δ2H = ?37.5‰, δ18O = ?6.4‰), were identified as future evolutionary refugia. These sites are likely to contain water through the most severe of droughts and will be critically important for the persistence of water‐dependent species.
  5. Based on their isotopic composition, we identified 45 waterbodies (rockholes/waterholes) as temporary or ephemeral (δ2c. ?40 to ?100‰ and δ18c. ?4 to +25‰), that is, with no evidence of groundwater inflow. These, together with waterbodies supported by a mix of groundwater and surface water, can act as stepping stones and form part of the aquatic mosaic that is critical to supporting species in arid regions. Over two‐thirds of the waterholes sampled were very fresh (electrical conductivity <0.8 mS/cm), indicating that they provide the freshwater needed to support much of the regional aquatic and terrestrial fauna.
  6. All evolutionary refugia are located within protected areas (i.e. national parks or Indigenous Protected Areas), but some are subject to the impacts of feral animal species and invasive plants. Our findings indicate where control programmes and restoration actions can be prioritised to support biodiversity conservation and climate change adaptation. Our approach, combining citizen science and isotope hydrology, can be used to identify future refugia in other remote and arid regions where water scarcity is likely to increase under global climate change.

In the deep biosphere, microbial sulfate reduction (MSR) is exploited for energy. Here, we show that, in fractured continental crystalline bedrock in three areas in Sweden, this process produced sulfide that reacted with iron to form pyrite extremely enriched in 34S relative to 32S. As documented by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) microanalyses, the δ34Spyrite values are up to +132‰V‐CDT and with a total range of 186‰. The lightest δ34Spyrite values (?54‰) suggest very large fractionation during MSR from an initial sulfate with δ34S values (δ34Ssulfate,0) of +14 to +28‰. Fractionation of this magnitude requires a slow MSR rate, a feature we attribute to nutrient and electron donor shortage as well as initial sulfate abundance. The superheavy δ34Spyrite values were produced by Rayleigh fractionation effects in a diminishing sulfate pool. Large volumes of pyrite with superheavy values (+120 ± 15‰) within single fracture intercepts in the boreholes, associated heavy average values up to +75‰ and heavy minimum δ34Spyrite values, suggest isolation of significant amounts of isotopically light sulfide in other parts of the fracture system. Large fracture‐specific δ34Spyrite variability and overall average δ34Spyrite values (+11 to +16‰) lower than the anticipated δ34Ssulfate,0 support this hypothesis. The superheavy pyrite found locally in the borehole intercepts thus represents a late stage in a much larger fracture system undergoing Rayleigh fractionation. Microscale Rb–Sr dating and U/Th–He dating of cogenetic minerals reveal that most pyrite formed in the early Paleozoic era, but crystal overgrowths may be significantly younger. The δ13C values in cogenetic calcite suggest that the superheavy δ34Spyrite values are related to organotrophic MSR, in contrast to findings from marine sediments where superheavy pyrite has been proposed to be linked to anaerobic oxidation of methane. The findings provide new insights into MSR‐related S‐isotope systematics, particularly regarding formation of large fractions of 34S‐rich pyrite.  相似文献

Almost no δ18O data are available for leaf carbohydrates, leaving a gap in the understanding of the δ18O relationship between leaf water and cellulose. We measured δ18O values of bulk leaf water (δ18OLW) and individual leaf carbohydrates (e.g. fructose, glucose and sucrose) in grass and tree species and δ18O of leaf cellulose in grasses. The grasses were grown under two relative humidity (rH) conditions. Sucrose was generally 18O‐enriched compared with hexoses across all species with an apparent biosynthetic fractionation factor (εbio) of more than 27‰ relative to δ18OLW, which might be explained by isotopic leaf water and sucrose synthesis gradients. δ18OLW and δ18O values of carbohydrates and cellulose in grasses were strongly related, indicating that the leaf water signal in carbohydrates was transferred to cellulose (εbio = 25.1‰). Interestingly, damping factor pexpx, which reflects oxygen isotope exchange with less enriched water during cellulose synthesis, responded to rH conditions if modelled from δ18OLW but not if modelled directly from δ18O of individual carbohydrates. We conclude that δ18OLW is not always a good substitute for δ18O of synthesis water due to isotopic leaf water gradients. Thus, compound‐specific δ18O analyses of individual carbohydrates are helpful to better constrain (post‐)photosynthetic isotope fractionation processes in plants.  相似文献

Marine sediments of the Ross Sea, Antarctica, harbor microbial communities that play a significant role in the decomposition, mineralization, and recycling of organic carbon (OC). In this study, the cell densities within a 153‐cm sediment core from the Ross Sea were estimated based on microbial phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) concentrations and acridine orange direct cell counts. The resulting densities were as high as 1.7 × 107 cells mL?1 in the top ten centimeters of sediments. These densities are lower than those calculated for most near‐shore sites but consistent with deep‐sea locations with comparable sedimentation rates. The δ13C measurements of PLFAs and sedimentary and dissolved carbon sources, in combination with ribosomal RNA (SSU rRNA) gene pyrosequencing, were used to infer microbial metabolic pathways. The δ13C values of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in porewaters ranged downcore from ?2.5‰ to ?3.7‰, while δ13C values for the corresponding sedimentary particulate OC (POC) varied from ?26.2‰ to ?23.1‰. The δ13C values of PLFAs ranged between ?29‰ and ?35‰ throughout the sediment core, consistent with a microbial community dominated by heterotrophs. The SSU rRNA gene pyrosequencing revealed that members of this microbial community were dominated by β‐, δ‐, and γ‐Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi and Bacteroidetes. Among the sequenced organisms, many appear to be related to known heterotrophs that utilize OC sources such as amino acids, oligosaccharides, and lactose, consistent with our interpretation from δ13CPLFA analysis. Integrating phospholipids analyses with porewater chemistry, δ13CDIC and δ13CPOC values and SSU rRNA gene sequences provides a more comprehensive understanding of microbial communities and carbon cycling in marine sediments, including those of this unique ice shelf environment.  相似文献

The sedimentary pyrite sulfur isotope (δ34S) record is an archive of ancient microbial sulfur cycling and environmental conditions. Interpretations of pyrite δ34S signatures in sediments deposited in microbial mat ecosystems are based on studies of modern microbial mat porewater sulfide δ34S geochemistry. Pyrite δ34S values often capture δ34S signatures of porewater sulfide at the location of pyrite formation. However, microbial mats are dynamic environments in which biogeochemical cycling shifts vertically on diurnal cycles. Therefore, there is a need to study how the location of pyrite formation impacts pyrite δ34S patterns in these dynamic systems. Here, we present diurnal porewater sulfide δ34S trends and δ34S values of pyrite and iron monosulfides from Middle Island Sinkhole, Lake Huron. The sediment–water interface of this sinkhole hosts a low-oxygen cyanobacterial mat ecosystem, which serves as a useful location to explore preservation of sedimentary pyrite δ34S signatures in early Earth environments. Porewater sulfide δ34S values vary by up to ~25‰ throughout the day due to light-driven changes in surface microbial community activity that propagate downwards, affecting porewater geochemistry as deep as 7.5 cm in the sediment. Progressive consumption of the sulfate reservoir drives δ34S variability, instead of variations in average cell-specific sulfate reduction rates and/or sulfide oxidation at different depths in the sediment. The δ34S values of pyrite are similar to porewater sulfide δ34S values near the mat surface. We suggest that oxidative sulfur cycling and other microbial activity promote pyrite formation in and immediately adjacent to the microbial mat and that iron geochemistry limits further pyrite formation with depth in the sediment. These results imply that primary δ34S signatures of pyrite deposited in organic-rich, iron-poor microbial mat environments capture information about microbial sulfur cycling and environmental conditions at the mat surface and are only minimally affected by deeper sedimentary processes during early diagenesis.  相似文献
