Full reliefs of Cruziana furcifera from the Lower-Middle Ordovician quartzite sandstone beds (Pochico Formation, southern Spain) points to deep, infaunal burrowing of trilobites. Some specimens show an unusual vertical extension with a wider lower part and a narrower upper part in cross section. They are referred to trilobites, which burrowed deeply in the sediment and were oriented obliquely head down and tail up. Deep burrowing seems to be common for other members of the Cruziana rugosa group, foremost C. rugosa and C. furcifera, less for C. goldfussi. The deep burrowing recorded in the discussed trace fossils can be referred to the earliest common infaunalization caused by trilobites and other arthropods during the Ordovician, probably in a response to a food competition on the sea floor, which promoted a behavioral plasticity within the same taxon or closely related taxa of trilobites.  相似文献

Abstract

The need to move increasing volumes of petroleum over long distances has stimulated the construction of a large fleet of tankers of unprecedented dimensions. The extraordinarily deep drafts of these ships have necessitated a reevaluation of the extent of navigable ocean. Because some major shipping lanes are closed to their movement, alternative routes have developed. For this study, hydrographic charts of the passages between the Indian and Pacific oceans were examined in detail and special purpose maps were constructed. The patterns illustrate the categories of negative ocean, open ocean, and ocean conditional for the movement of deep‐draft ships. Actual and potential routeways for deep‐draft ships past Southeast Asia are identified and the limitations of the Malacca/Singapore straits are described in greater detail.  相似文献

Background

Although the tonsils contribute to first line immunity against foreign pathogens in the upper aero-digestive tract, the association of tonsillectomy with the risk of deep neck infection remains unclear. The aim of this study was to assess the incidence rate and risk of deep neck infection among patients who had undergone a tonsillectomy.

Methods

This retrospective cohort study evaluated all patients who had undergone tonsillectomy between 2001 and 2009 as identified from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. For each post-tonsillectomy patient, 10 age-, sex-, and index date-matched controls without a history of tonsillectomy were randomly selected. Cox Proportional hazard model and propensity score model were performed to evaluate the association between tonsillectomy and deep neck infection after adjusting for demographic and clinical data.

Results

There were 34 (71.6 cases per 100,000 person-years) and 174 (36.6 cases per 100,000 person-years) patients that developed deep neck infection in the tonsillectomized and comparison cohorts, respectively. After adjusting for covariates, patients who had undergone a tonsillectomy had a 1.71-fold greater risk of deep neck infection by both Cox proportional hazard model (95% confidence interval, 1.13-2.59) and propensity score model (95% confidence interval, 1.10-2.66). This association was not altered regardless of the indication for tonsillectomy (i.e. chronic/recurrent tonsillitis or sleep apnea/hypertrophy of tonsil) (p = 0.9797).

Conclusions

Based on our review of a nationwide cohort study we identified that the risk of deep neck infection is significantly increased among patients who have undergone a tonsillectomy. Additional research is needed to explore the possible mechanisms behind these findings.  相似文献

Danube main channel deep pools are in-stream habitats of high ecological relevance. We used dual-frequency identification sonar to investigate seasonal and diel fish abundance in two hydrodynamically different deep pools in the main channel of the Danube River in 2008. In general, fish of different species were present in both deep pools throughout the year, irrespective of water level. High fish abundance was recorded during autumn and winter, low abundance during spring and summer. During low discharge and low temperature and particularly during low flow velocity, low kinetic energy and low shear stress, high fish abundance in densely packed aggregations were observed, a clear indication for the refuge capacity of deep pools. In contrast, during turbulent hydraulic conditions with high flow velocity, high turbulent kinetic energy and high shear stress, low fish abundance occurred, mainly consisting of single fish, small fish shoals and benthic fish specimens. Furthermore, we could reveal that calm as well as turbulent pools fulfil the requirements as refuge and feeding habitat of eurytopic, piscivorous catfish throughout the year. The application of a multiple linear model based on the hydrological parameters discharge and water temperature as well as the hydraulic parameters flow velocity, turbulent kinetic energy and shear stress provided highly significant evidence between the observed and the expected seasonal fish abundance in the deep pools (R 2 = 0.77, P < 0.001). For the first time these results make clear that the main channel deep pools are important refuge and resource habitats of different species of the Danube fish community. Deep pools are key habitats for the in-stream fish community of the Danube River.  相似文献

Background

The biological communities that inhabit chemosynthetic environments exist in an ephemeral and patchily distributed habitat with unique physicochemical properties that lead to high endemicity. Consequently, the maintenance and recovery from perturbation of the populations in these habitats is, arguably, mainly regulated by larval supply and recruitment.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We use data from the published scientific literature to: (1) compare the magnitudes of and variability in larval supply and settlement and recruitment at hydrothermal vents, seeps, and whale, wood and kelp falls; (2) explore factors that affect these life history processes, when information is available; and (3) explore taxonomic affinities in the recruit assemblages of the different chemosynthetic habitats, using multivariate statistical techniques. Larval supply at vents can vary across segments by several orders of magnitude for gastropods; for bivalves, supply is similar at vents on different segments, and at cold seeps. The limited information on larval development suggests that dispersal potential may be highest for molluscs from cold seeps, intermediate for siboglinids at vents and lowest for the whale-bone siboglinid Osedax. Settlement is poorly studied and only at vents and seeps, but tends to be highest near an active source of emanating fluid in both habitats. Rate of recruitment at vents is more variable among studies within a segment than among segments. Across different chemosynthetic habitats, recruitment rate of bivalves is much more variable than that of gastropods and polychaetes. Total recruitment rate ranges only between 0.1 and 1 ind dm−2 d−1 across all chemosynthetic habitats, falling above rates in the non-reducing deep sea. The recruit assemblages at vents, seeps and kelp falls have lower taxonomic breadth, and include more families and genera that have many species more closely related to each other than those at whale and wood falls. Vents also have the most uneven taxonomic structure, with fewer recruits represented by higher taxonomic levels (phyla, orders, classes) compared to seeps and wood and kelp falls, whereas the opposite is true at whale falls.

Conclusions/Significance

Based on our evaluation of the literature, the patterns and regulatory factors of the early history processes in chemosynthetic environments in the deep sea remain poorly understood. More research focused on these early life history stages will allow us to make inferences about the ecological and biogeographic linkages among the reducing habitats in the deep sea.  相似文献

The dynamics of the subthalamo-pallidal complex in Parkinson’s disease during deep brain stimulation (DBS) were studied using two models, a simple firing-rate model and a population-based model. We extended the simple firing-rate model of the complex formed by the subthalamic nucleus (STN) and the external segment of the Globus Pallidus (GPe) to explore its dynamical regime during DBS. More specifically, the modulation of neuronal activity (i.e., pattern and amplitude) during DBS was studied. A similar approach was used with the population-based model. Simulation results revealed a gradual decrease in bursting activity in STN cells when the DBS frequency increased. In addition, the contribution of the stimulation current type (mono- or biphasic) to the results was also examined. A comparison of the two models indicated that the population-based model was more biologically realistic and more appropriate for exploring DBS mechanisms. Understanding the underlying mechanisms of DBS is a prerequisite for developing new stimulation protocols.  相似文献

Effective proteome analyses are based on interplay between resolution and detection. It had been claimed that resolution was the main factor limiting the use of two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. Improved protein detection now indicates that this is unlikely to be the case. Using a highly refined protocol, the rat brain proteome was extracted, resolved, and detected. In order to overcome the stain saturation threshold, high abundance protein species were excised from the gel following standard imaging. Gels were then imaged again using longer exposure times, enabling detection of lower abundance, less intensely stained protein species. This resulted in a significant enhancement in the detection of resolved proteins, and a slightly modified digestion protocol enabled effective identification by standard mass spectrometric methods. The data indicate that the resolution required for comprehensive proteome analyses is already available, can assess multiple samples in parallel, and preserve critical information concerning post-translational modifications. Further optimization of staining and detection methods promises additional improvements to this economical, widely accessible and effective top-down approach to proteome analysis.  相似文献

Smooth and coordinated motion requires precisely timed muscle activation patterns, which due to biophysical limitations, must be predictive and executed in a feed-forward manner. In a previous study, we tested Kawato’s original proposition, that the cerebellum implements an inverse controller, by mapping a multizonal microcomplex’s (MZMC) biophysics to a joint’s inverse transfer function and showing that inferior olivary neuron may use their intrinsic oscillations to mirror a joint’s oscillatory dynamics. Here, to continue to validate our mapping, we propose that climbing fiber input into the deep cerebellar nucleus (DCN) triggers rebounds, primed by Purkinje cell inhibition, implementing gain on IO’s signal to mirror the spinal cord reflex’s gain thereby achieving inverse control. We used biophysical modeling to show that Purkinje cell inhibition and climbing fiber excitation interact in a multiplicative fashion to set DCN’s rebound strength; where the former primes the cell for rebound by deinactivating its T-type Ca2+ channels and the latter triggers the channels by rapidly depolarizing the cell. We combined this result with our control theory mapping to predict how experimentally injecting current into DCN will affect overall motor output performance, and found that injecting current will proportionally scale the output and unmask the joint’s natural response as observed by motor output ringing at the joint’s natural frequency. Experimental verification of this prediction will lend support to a MZMC as a joint’s inverse controller and the role we assigned underlying biophysical principles that enable it.  相似文献

The Amundsen Sea, Antarctica, is amongst the most rapidly changing environments of the world. Its benthic inhabitants are barely known and the BIOPEARL 2 project was one of the first to biologically explore this region. Collected during this expedition, Macrostylis roaldi sp. nov. is described as the first isopod discovered on the Amundsen-Sea shelf. Amongst many characteristic features, the most obvious characters unique for M. roaldi are the rather short pleotelson and short operculum as well as the trapezoid shape of the pleotelson in adult males. We used DNA barcodes (COI) and additional mitochondrial markers (12S, 16S) to reciprocally illuminate morphological results and nucleotide variability. In contrast to many other deep-sea isopods, this species is common and shows a wide distribution. Its range spreads from Pine Island Bay at inner shelf right to the shelf break and across 1,000 m bathymetrically. Its gene pool is homogenized across space and depth. This is indicative for a genetic bottleneck or a recent colonization history. Our results suggest further that migratory or dispersal capabilities of some species of brooding macrobenthos have been underestimated. This might be relevant for the species’ potential to cope with effects of climate change. To determine where this species could have survived the last glacial period, alternative refuge possibilities are discussed.  相似文献

The latitudinal gradient in global diversity, in which the number of species decreases away from the tropics, is widely recognized and well-studied but no consensus exists as to its cause. The “Age of the Tropics” hypothesis argues that the tropics have more species because young, ecologically dominant, tropical clades have not had sufficient time to disperse and adapt to colder climates; given time, the tropics act as a diversity pump. This hypothesis is tested using Carboniferous productidine brachiopods, which at that time were a young, ecologically dominant clade that originated in the tropics. A database of geographic occurrences indicates that productidines did not manifest a pattern of dispersal away from the tropics through time. A phylogeny of one productidine clade demonstrates that many lineages contracted, rather than expanded, their ranges over time. The results suggest that the hypothesis that the tropics are a diversity pump cannot be generalized across time and taxa.  相似文献
