The forms of successive primordia in the development of linearand ovate leaves are described and discussed in relation toprimordia in crowns where a transition is occurring betweenovate leaves and linear leaves. Ovate leaves are induced onsubmerged axes, originally bearing linear leaves, by submergingthese axes in 30 per cent. sea water. The results are discussedin relation to possible interpretations of heterophylly in C.intermedia.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on post-embryonic growth of Neomysisintermedia was investigated under unlimited food conditionsin the laboratory. The effect of temperature on the size ofnewly released animals was negligibly small, but body size wasinversely related to temperature in adults. This was mainlycaused by the difference in the number of molts before maturation.The specific growth rate of N. intermedia increased exponentiallywith a temperature coefficient, Q10 of 4.6 from 0.018 d–13C to 0.21 d–1 at 20C in juveniles, and with a temperaturecoefficient of 2.7 from 0.006 d–1 at 3C to 0.05 d–1at 25C in adults. The rate in juveniles levelled off above20C, and dropped at 29C. Brood size and brood interval decreasedwith temperature increase, while the daily specific reproductionrate increased. The specific growth rate of gravid females,including production of egg matter, increased exponentiallywith a temperature coefficient of 3.3 from 0.015 d–1 at10C to 0.093 d–1 at 25C. The present laboratory experiments confirmed the temperaturecontrol on the growth of N. intermedia suggested in a hyper-eutrophiclake.  相似文献

Results are presented which contradict previous reports thatin the graminaceous genus Puccinellia the root-shoot junctionhas a high diffusive resistance which severely restricts oxygentransfer from shoot to root. No such restriction was evidentin P. maritima, P. festuciformis var.festuciformis, and P. festucfformisvar.intermedia(= P. peisonis) and the plants produced well-developedroot systems in permanently flooded soils. The evidence obtainedsupports the view that, whether the root systems are whollyor only partially submerged by soil flooding the shoot is themajor source or entry point for oxygen required by the roots;also, that oxygen passes more readily from shoot to root thanit does through the wall cells of the root base. It is pointed out that paraffin oil is an undesirable productto employ as a diffusion barrier in studies of root aeration. The resistance to the photosynthetic carbon fixation in thefreshwater angiospcrm Callitriche stagnalis Scop was investigatedby gas exchange experiments in a closed water-flow system. Anelectrical analogue model was used to analyse uptake of carbonin terms of boundary layer resistance, cytoplasmic resistanceand carboxylation resistance. The most important rate-limitingfactor was the boundary layer resistance which was from 86%to 91 % of the total resistance of 852–1221 s cm–1.The cytoplasmic and carboxylation resistances during activephotosynthesis were of minor importance being 89 s cm–1and 24–30 s cm–1, respectively. The calculated thicknessof the boundary layer surrounding the foliage of the shootswas 103–155 µm or 2–3 times the total thicknessof the leaves. The physiological and morphological characteristicsof submerged aquatic macrophytes are discussed as adaptationsto the low availability of carbon due to the high boundary layerresistance. Ingestion, respiration, and molting loss rates were measuredover the 3 – 29°C range in Neomysis intermedia. Weightspecific rates of these physiological processes ranged from2 to 140% body C day–1 for ingestion, from 2 to 15% bodyC day–1 for respiration, and from 0.1 to 5% body C day–1for molting loss. All weight-specific rates showed a logarithmicdecrease with a logarithmic increase in body weight, and a logarithmicincrease with a linear increase in temperature below 20 or 25°C.The effect of temperature, however, was different between thephysiological rates, with a large temperature dependency foringestion (Q10 = 2.6 –3.9) and molting loss (Q10 = 2.9– 3.6) and a moderate temperature dependency for respiration(Q10 = 1.9 – 2.1). Calculated assimilation efficiencychanged with body size, but was constant over the temperaturerange examined. Allocation of assimilated materials varied witha change in temperature, reflecting the different temperaturedependence between physiological processes. It was deduced thatthe strong temperature dependency of the growth rate in N. intermediaobserved in the previous studies resulted from the large temperatureeffect on ingestion and assimilation rates, superimposed bythe different allocation of assimilated materials. 1Present address: Department of Botany, University of Tokyo,Hongo, Tokyo 113, Japan  相似文献

平茬是荒漠草原老化人工柠条林营林抚育的重要措施,为系统认识柠条平茬后连续的生理与生态响应过程及其变化规律,该研究设置对比观测样地,以未平茬柠条(WPC)为对照,以平茬后连续生长1~5年(PC1~PC5)的柠条为处理,对各样地柠条净光合速率、蒸腾速率、气孔导度、胞间CO2浓度、水分利用效率等光合生理特征及其土壤含水量分布的影响进行测定分析。结果表明:(1)平茬处理对柠条生理特性的影响因平茬年限的增加而异,其中PC1和PC2柠条的净光合速率和蒸腾速率较WPC略有提高,PC1柠条处于补偿生长的活跃期,水分利用效率明显高于其他平茬处理,PC2柠条的水分利用效率开始下降;PC3和PC4的柠条蒸腾速率、净光合速率和气孔导度显著上升,且PC4处理下达到最大值,相应水分利用效率也逐步回升;PC5的柠条几乎不存在补偿性生长,净光合速率、蒸腾速率和水分利用效率开始回落,逐渐接近WPC;平茬措施对PC1与PC5柠条胞间CO2浓度大小的影响较大。(2)PC1的土壤水分含量在0~100cm土层因受冠层截留大幅减小的影响而低于其他年限平茬处理;PC2的土壤水分略有改善,PC3、PC4的土壤含水量显著提高,PC5的土壤水分状况则逐渐接近于WPC。(3)随平茬年限的增加,柠条光合特性与土壤含水量间存在一定的动态互馈关系,其中PC1的土壤水分略有下降,柠条生长减缓;PC2土壤含水量逐步恢复;PC3土壤含水量增长幅度开始下降,柠条的各项生理指标上升;PC4柠条的光合生理指标、土壤含水量都达到了最高值;PC5柠条的各项指标开始下降。研究发现,PC4处理是柠条光合生理和土壤水分响应变化的拐点,可参考作为平茬柠条优化管理的一个时间节点。  相似文献

Gibberellic acid (GA) was found to stimulate internode expansionin floating rosettes of the aquatic, Callitriche stagnalis.Treated shoots resembled those normally produced from submergedapices. The environmental factor which controls the growth ofuntreated floating rosettes was investigated, and found to beloss of water by transpiration. The morphological effects ofdifferent concentrations of GA are described. The similarityis pointed out between environmental dwarfing in Callitricheand genetic dwarfing in Pisum.  相似文献

The photosynthetic characteristics of Eleocharis baldwinii (Torr.)Chapman, an amphibious leafless plant in the Cyperaceae, wereinvestigated in both the terrestrial form and the submergedform of the plant. Anatomical observation of the culm, whichis the photosynthetic organ in this plant, revealed that theterrestrial form has the Kranz type of anatomy, whereas thesubmerged form has an inner structure that is similar to thatof submerged aquatic plants, with a reduction in both the numberand the size of bundle sheath cells and vascular bundles andrelatively well developed mesophyll cells. In 14C-pulse 12C-chaseexperiments with the terrestrial form, 80% of the total fixed14C was incorporated into C4 dicarboxylic acids after a 10-spulse. The radioactivity in the C4 acids decreased rapidly,while that in sucrose increased to 36% during a 120-s chase.In the submerged form, 64% and 30% of the total fixed 14C wasincorporated into C4 acids and phosphate esters, respectively,after a 10-s pulse. The radioactivity of these compounds decreasedrelatively slowly during a 120-s chase. The specific activitieson a chlorophyll basis of C4 photosynthetic enzymes that areinvolved in the NAD-ME subtype were high in the terrestrialform, while they were intermediate between those of C3 and C4plants in the submerged form. The activity of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphatecarboxylase was 1.5 times higher in the submerged form thanin the terrestrial form. By contrast, the activity of carbonicanhydrase exhibited the reverse tendency. Western blot analysisof soluble proteins extracted from the mesophyll cells and thebundle sheath strands of the terrestrial form demonstrated thatribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase protein waspresent in the mesophyll cells as well as in the bundle sheathcells, with a higher level in the latter, although phosphoenolpyruvatecarboxylase and pyruvate, Pi dikinase proteins were restrictedto the mesophyll cells. In the submerged form, diurnal fluctuationsin levels of malate were observed with significant fixationof CO2 at night. However, the diurnal changes of malate weresmaller than those reported for CAM plants. These data indicatethat the terrestrial form of Eleocharis baldwinii fixes atmosphericCO2 essentially via the C4 pathway, while the submerged formfixes inorganic carbon via a complex metabolic system that resemblesan intermediate between C3 and C4 metabolism in associationwith a CAM-like profile. Two mussels, Choromytilus meridionalis (Krauss) and Aulacomyaater, (Molina) were used as indicators of biotic factors thatapparently result in radically different sublittoral communitiesat two closely situated islands on the South African west coast.Specimens of both species were attached to submerged plates,which were either unprotected or protected from predation bycages. C. meridionalis grew faster and tolerated silting andsmothering better than A. ater. At Malgas Island adults of C.meridionalis are completely absent and those of A. ater scarcedue to intense predation by rock-lobsters. When protected againstpredation, growth of both species was significantly faster andsurvivership higher at Malgas than at Marcus Island, where C.meridionalis is abundant but A. ater absent. When the musselswere unprotected at Malgas, they were eaten in a few hours.At Marcus Island where rock-lobsters are virtually absent, cagedmussels grow faster than unprotected individuals and survivedlonger. Drilling whelks (mostly Nucella squamosa (Lamarck))were major predators at Marcus. Relative intensity of rock-lobsterpredation and competition between the mussels appear to controlthe structure and diversity of the sublittoral communities atthese sites, rather than physical factors. In situ growth of Neomysis intermedia Czerniawsky at the post-embryonicstage was studied by the cohort analysis using the probabilitygraphic technique in a hypereutrophic temperate lake, Lake Kasumigaura.Two overwintering populations and 5 spring cohorts were recognizedover 2-yr field observations performed at 4–15 day intervals.There was no luck in order to follow possible cohorts in mid-summerand autumn. The specific growth rate of the post-embryonic stagedetermined varied between 0.001 and 0.16 (day –1) dependingupon the surrounding water temperature, and each individualgrowth showed an almost exponential pattern. Average size ofnew born individuals was {small tilde}2.1 mm in body lengthand was consistent regardless of the difference of seasons,but the average mature size was highly temperature dependent,ranging between 7.6 and 12.0 mm for males and 8.1 and 13.5 mmfor females.  相似文献

Temporal changes in the density of rotifer plankton were examinedin a shallow eutrophic pond during July to September 1990, whenabiotic environmental variables were relatively stable. In earlyJuly when Daphnia similis was abundant, rotifer populationsremained at a low density. This is probably due to interferenceby the large cladoceran, because possible food was abundantand the rotifers showed high egg ratio. After late July, whenthe large cladoceran disappeared, a striking succession wasfound in the rotifer plankton. In late July, when Filinia longisetaand Conochilus dossuarius dominated, and in mid- to late Septemberwhen F.opoliensis and Brachionus falcatus dominated, there wasa causal relationship between the density and egg ratio, suggestingthat temporal changes in rotifer density were regulated mainlyby food abundance. However, in August, changes in the densityof most rotifers were not necessarily related with those inthe egg ratio. Brachionus angularis, B.forficula and Keratellaspp. decreased or remained at a low density regardless of theegg ratio, when the population of Asplanchna brightwelli wasdeveloped. However, Polyarthra vulgaris, B.calyciflorus andH.intermedia increased or maintained a high density at thistime. Stomach contents of A.brightwelli revealed that B.angularis,B.forficula and Keratella spp. were the preferred prey, whereasP.vulgaris, B.calyciflorus and H.intermedia were not. Theseresults provide strong evidence that the structure of rotiferplankton can change strikingly within a season due to species-specificdifferences not only in diet, but also in the ability to escapepredation, even if abiotic environmental variables are stable.  相似文献

The underlying toxic mechanisms of the red tide dinoflagellate,Cochlodinium polykrikoides, were studied with respect to thereactive oxygen species-mediated toxic effect. Cochlodiniumpolykrikoides generates superoxide anion (O2) and hydrogenperoxide (H2O2), as measured by the cytochrome c reduction methodand scopoletin–peroxidase method, respectively. The capabilityof C.polykrikoides to generate these oxygen radicals was relatedto the growth phase: the highest rate in the exponential phaseand a gradual decrease in the stationary phase. Other phytoplankton,such as Eutreptiella gymnastica, Heterosigma akashiwo, Prorocentrummicans, Gymnodinium sanguineum and Alexandrium tamarense, alsoproduce H2O2; the rate of H2O2 generation by these species waslower than that of C.polykrikoides. The exposure of liposomalsamples to intact or ruptured individuals of C.polykrikoidesresulted in severe membrane damage, such as liposomal lipidperoxidation. Cochlodinium polykrikoides-induced lipid peroxidationwas significantly reduced by oxygen radical scavengers, superoxidedismutase, benzoquinone, catalase and mannitol. In addition,lipid peroxidation of gill tissue of flatfish exposed to C.polykrikoidesincreased with increasing algal cell density. These resultssuggest that reactive oxygen species generated from C.polykrikoidesare responsible for oxidative damage leading to fish kills.  相似文献

The structure and development of stomata in 10 Amaryllidaceousmembers are described. The study is made on the leaves and floralorgans of Amaryllis belladona, Crinum asiaticum, C. bulbispermum,C. latifolium, C. pratense, Pancratium sp., Polianthes tuberosa,and Zephyranthes atamsco, and on leaves of Agave sp. and Curculigoorchioides. In most of the organs of the different plants studiedmore than one type of stoma occur, even on the same surface.However, the stomata are largely anomocytic in Amaryllis, Crinum,Pancratium, Polianthes, and Zephyranthes, but they are tetracyticin Agave and Curculigo. An increase in the number of subsidiarycells in teracytic, tricytic, paracytic, and stomata with onesubsidiary cell has been noted. It may be due to wall formationin the subsidiary cells or by the neighbouring perigenes assumingtheir form. The range of variation in different types of stomatain each organ has been studied. Abnormal features such as juxtaposedor superimposed contiguous stomata, connections between guardcells of nearby stomata, transformation of meristemoids intoepidermal cells are observed. The development of different typesof stomata in different organs of the same plant is perigenous.The systematic position of different genera is discussed inlight of the present findings. A method of preparing epidermalimprints by the use of Depex, a mounting medium, and white ofan egg is also described.  相似文献

The calanoid copepod, Eudiaplomus graciloides, was reared fromegg to adult on uni-algal diets (0.1. 0.5 and 2.5 mg dry wt1–1) using the green alga, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii,as food, or on a mixed diet consisting of Lake Esrom water filteredthrough a plankton net with pore size 45 µm and supplementedwith C. reinhardtii (2.5 mg dry wt 1–1). On the mixeddiet at 21.0°C growth in body dry wt (W, µg dry wt)was exponential, and the growth constants were 0.21 day–1in the early to mid juvenile stage (N1 - C4) and 0.11 day–1in the late juvenile to early adult stage (C4-A). At 14.5°Cthe corresponding growth rate constants were 0.10 and 0.08 day–1.Similar growth rates were found at uni-algal concentrationsof 0.5 and 2.5 mg dry wt I–1, and it was argued that thethreshold concentration for growth in Eudiaptomus was closeto 0.1 mg dry wt I–1. The clearance (C, ml h–1)of copepodites was measured on the uni-algal diets. The constantsof the regression (C = aWb) were: a = 0.125, b = 0.858 (2000C. reinhardtii ml–1), a = 0.068, b = 0.849 (10 000), a= 0.028, b = 0.875 (50 000). Ingestion rates were calculatedfrom the clearances and the average algal concentrations. Atthe three food levels the average daily rations were 30, 67and 125% of body dry wt. The respiration rate (R, nl O2 h–1)was measured in individuals reared on the mixed diet. The constantsof the regression (R = aWb) were: a = 4.82, b = 1.07 (nauplii,14.5°C), a = 4.17, b = 0.904 (copepodites and adults, 14.5°C),a = 6.87, b = 0.757 (copepodites and adults, 21.0°C). Nosignificant difference in the respiration rate of copepoditesreared on uni-algal diets and the mixed diet could be demonstrated.Energy budgets were calculated. The assimilation efficiencyand the gross growth efficiency of copepodites decreased markedlywith increasing food concentration, the net growth efficiencyvaried from an average of 0.44 at the lowest algal concentrationto 0.60 on the mixed diet. The results are discussed in relationto previous findings with both freshwater and marine copepods.  相似文献

In water samples collected from the middle of Admiralty Bay(King George Island 62°08'S 58°25'W) between February1990 and January 1991, 17 Tintinnina species were noted. TotalTintinnina numbers in summer were very high (up to 5000 cellsm–3), but species diversity was low, consisting mainlyof Cymatocylis affnislconvallaria, forma convallaria. Duringaustral winter, cell numbers were very low, but species compositionwas diverse. Cymatocylis affnislconvallaria, forma affinis,and C.affmis/convallaria, forma convallaria, the polymorphicforms of one species C.affinis/convallaria, appear to be interchangeableduring the year. The transition from one form to the other occursin the spring and autumn. The typical Tintinnina polymorphismcan be attributed to the prevailing environmental conditions.  相似文献

This account reports on recruitment, growth and population structureof the macroherbivorous gastropod Helcion pellucidum (L.) onan exposed rocky shore in S.E. Ireland, with particular referenceto the pellucidum form. Recently settled Helcion spat were foundinitially on living crustose lithothamnia in pools and on openrock, on the lower shore, during February-April and subsequentlyrecruited to macro-algal fronds. By May they were found in abundanceon Mastocarpus stellatus and Laminaria spp. Helcion was markedlyseasonal in its occurrence on Mastocarpus, being most abundantduring May-August. A complementary pattern was evident on growingHimanthalia receptacles, with limpets abundant from July onwards.It is suggested that Helcion may migrate from Mastocarpus toHimanthalia as they grow. Two fungi, Fusarium lateritium and Phomopsis dominici and twobacteria (S3) and (G1) resembling Agrobacterium radiobactervar. tumefaciens and Corynebacterium fascians isolated fromgalls on Forsythia intermedia failed to produce galls upon reinoculation.Similarly, cultures of C. fascians, Pseudomonas savastanoi andP. savastanoi var. fraxini failed to induce galls. Both A. radiobactervar. tumefaciens and tumerous carrot tissue infected with A.radiobacter var. rhizogenes produced tumerous tissue in inoculatedplants but only the latter induced an overgrowth resemblinga natural gall on Forsythia.  相似文献

The effect of nutrient amendment on growth of nine indigenoustree species planted on coal mine spoil was studied. Greatergrowth in fertilized plots was accompanied by greater foliarN and P concentrations in all species. The response to fertilizationvaried among species and was greater in non-leguminous thanin leguminous species. Furthermore, leguminous species exhibitedhigher growth rates compared to non-leguminous species. Thelog-transformed height-diameter relationships were significantfor all tree species and treatments. Acacia catechu, Dalbergiasissoo, Gmelina arborea and Azadirachta indica fitted the elasticsimilarity model of tree growth; whereas Pongamia pinnata andPhyllanthus emblica followed the constant stress model. Tectonagrandis was the only species which fitted the geometric similaritymodel. In Albizia lebbeck and Terminalia bellirica, the b -values(the gradients of the log-transformed height to diameter relationships)were considerably lower (<0.5), and these two species didnot fit any model of tree growth. In several cases, the b -valueswere considerably influenced by nutrient amendment. The log-transformedcrown mass and trunk mass relationships were significant forall treatments and species. The slope of the crown mass:trunkmass relationship was near unity in A. indica, D. sissoo, G.arborea, P. emblica, P. pinnata, T. grandis, and T. bellirica.However, in A. catechu and A. lebbeck, this slope was well belowunity suggesting a greater allocation to non-photosynthetictissue. Fertilizer amendment resulted in a heavier crown relativeto trunk in A. indica, T. grandis and T. bellirica.
