The seasonal dynamics of uptake, partitioning and redistributionof dry matter, N, P, K, S, Ca, Mg, Na, Cl, Fe, Zn, Mn and Cuby the cormaceous plant Ixia flexuosa were studied in pot cultureat Perth, Western Australia. Dry matter and P, N, K, Zn andCu were redistributed from the mother corm with about 90 percent net efficiency: there was no net redistribution of Ca,Na, Fe or Mn. The efficiency of redistribution from the leafyshoot to fruits and the new season's corm was 80 per cent forN and P, 24–49 per cent for K, Cu and Zn, and 0–15per cent for Na, Fe, Ca, Mn, Cl, Mg, S and dry matter. Redistributionfrom the mother corm and vegetative organs could have suppliedthe replacement corm, cormlets and fruits with 32–53 percent of their S, K, P, N, Cu and Zn, and 11–25 per centof their Ca, Cl, Mn, Mg and dry matter. The mature replacementcorm had over 60 per cent of the plant's N and P, 25–50per cent of its dry matter, Zn, Cu, Mg, K and Cl, but less than20 per cent of its Ca, Na, Fe and Mn. Each plant produced anaverage of 12 cormlets; these had 35 per cent of the dry matterand 23–47 per cent of the amount of a particular nutrientin the new season's corms. Fruits had less than 16 per centof the dry matter and each mineral in the mature plant. Ratesof mineral intake by Ixia were much lower than reported forcrop plants, and may be related to the long growing season ofthe species. The nutrition of developing fruits of Ricinus communis was studiednear Perth, Western Australia, where the species grows as aweed on poor sandy soil. Fruits required 60 days to mature anddehydration of the capsule began 20 days before the seeds ripened.Mature seeds accumulated 49 per cent of the fruit dry matterand over 80 per cent of its P, Zn and Cu, 50–80 per centof its Mg, N, Fe and Mn, 41–46 per cent of its S and Caand 11–21 per cent of its K and Na. Losses of nutrientsfrom capsules during fruit ripening were: Zn, 73 per cent, P,42 per cent, Cu, 23 per cent and Mn, 8 per cent. Dry matter,N, K, S, Ca, Mg, Na and Fe were not withdrawn from capsules.Apparent retranslocation from capsules could have provided from6–28 per cent of the Zn, Mn, P and Cu in mature seeds.Seeds from plants on poor sandy soil were small but had adequatelevels of nutrients when compared with those from plants growingon a fertile loam. Concentrations of all nutrients except P were higher in youngcapsules than in young seeds, but levels of N, P, Mg, Fe, Znand Cu were higher in mature seeds than in mature capsules.The intake of most nutrients by fruits was out of phase withdry matter accumulation, especially in capsules, and the elementsappeared to accumulate in fruit parts independently of eachother. Glutamine accounted for over 85 per cent of the amino-Nin phloem sap destined for fruits. Potassium made up over 90per cent of the inorganic cations in phloem exudate. Of theminor elements in the exudate, Fe was present at highest concentrationand Cu at the lowest. The results showed that retranslocation from the capsule madea very small contribution to the nutrition of seeds. It is suggestedthat R. communis would require a sustained supply of soil nutrientsto ensure maximum seed yield, partly due to the restricted retranslocationof most nutrients from capsules. The mineral nutrition of fruiting plants of Pisum sativum L.,Lupinus albus L. and Lupinus angustifolius L. is examined insand cultures supplying adequate and balanced amounts of essentialnutrients. Changes in content of specific minerals in leaves,pods, seed coat, and embryo are described. P, N and Zn tendto increase precociously in an organ relative to dry matteraccumulation, other elements more or less parallel with (K,Mn, Cu, Mg and Fe) or significantly behind (Ca and Na) dry weightincrease. Some 60–90 per cent of the N, P and K is lostfrom the leaf, pod and seed coat during senescence, versus 20–60per cent of the Mg, Zn, Mn, Fe and Cu and less than 20 per centof the Na and Ca. Mobilization returns from pods are estimatedto provide 4–39 per cent of the seeds' accumulations ofspecific minerals, compared with 4–27 per cent for testatransfer to the embryo. Endosperm minerals are of only minorsignificance in embryo nutrition. Comparisons of the mineral balance of plant parts of Lupinusspp. with that of stem xylem sap and fruit tip phloem sap supportthe view that leaves and pod are principal recipients of xylem-borneminerals and that export from these organs via phloem is themajor source of minerals to the seeds. Endosperm and embryodiffer substantially in mineral compostition from phloem sap,suggesting that selective uptake occurs from the translocationstream during seed development. Considerable differences are observed between species in mineralcomposition of plant organs and in the effectiveness of transferof specific minerals to the seeds Differences between speciesrelate principally to Ca, Na and certain trace elements.  相似文献

The economy of carbon, nitrogen, water and mineral elementsin fruits of Lupinus albus L. was studied by measuring accumulationof these quantities in the developing fruit and estimating itstranspirational losses and CO2 exchanges. Combining this informationwith data on levels of mineral elements in the xylem sap andphloem sap supplying the fruit, it was possible to test whethertransport based on mass inflow through xylem and phloem wouldaccount for the observed intake of elements. A model of transportbased on water and carbon intake suggested that vascular intakeduring the fruit's life matched the recorded increment for mineralsto within ± 15 per cent for N, Na, Zn, Fe and Cu, andto within ± 23 per cent for P, K and S. However, estimatedvascular intake of Ca, Mg and Mn accounted for less than one–thirdof the recorded intake by the fruit, inadequacy of vascularintake being especially great early in growth. Transport inphloem accounted for more than 80 per cent of the fruit's vascularintake of C, N and S, and 70–80 per cent of its P, K,Mg and Zn. Xylem contributed 68 per cent of the vascular inputof Ca, 59 per cent of the Na, and 34–38 per cent of theFe, Mn and Cu. Enclosure and darkening of fruits reduced levelsof Ca and Fe but increased levels of N, P, K and Zn in fruitdry matter relative to unenclosed, illuminated fruits. The effect of varied phosphorus (10 and 250 mmol P m–3potassium (50 and 2010 mmol K m–3) and magnesium (20 and1000 mmol Mg m–3 supply on sucrose, reducing sugars, aminoacids, P, K, and Mg in phloem exudate was studied in bean (Phaseolusvulgaris L.) plants over a 12 d growth period in nutrient solution.Phloem exudates were collected from detached primary leavesusing the EDTA-promoted exudation technique. Compared with controlnutrient-sufficient plants, sucrose export in the phloem exudatewas drastically decreased by K deficiency and, particularly,by Mg deficiency, whereas P deficiency either had no effector stimulated sucrose export. In Mg-deficient plants the rateof sucrose export was decreased to 10–20% of the controlplants. There was a close Inverse relationship between phloemexport and leaf concentration of sucrose: higher leaf concentrationsof sucrose were accompanied by lower phloem export of sucrose.In contrast to sucrose, reducing sugars in the exudates werevery low and not affected by P, K and Mg deficiency. The phloemexport of amino acids was strongly depressed by Mg deficiency,but only slightly by P and K deficiency. Resupplying Mg to Mg-deficientplants for 12 h during the dark or light periods rapidly stimulatedsucrose export. After resup ply of Mg for 24 h and 48 h therate of sucrose export was comparable with the rate in the controlplants. The results demonstrate a key role for Mg in phloem loadingand export of photosynthates from source leaves, especiallysucrose. Inhibition of root growth and development of visualsymptoms of chlorosis in Mg-deficient plants are suggested asconsequences of Impaired phloem loading. In agreement with thisin P-deficient plants where phloem loading was not impaired,chlorosis was absent and root growth was maintained at a highlevel. The distribution of dry matter and various mineral nutrientsbetween testa and embryo of seeds of Lupinus albus and L. angustifoliusis described It was found that lupin seeds at either end ofa pod contained less dry matter and minerals than seeds in themiddle of the fruit. The transport of dry matter, N, P, K, S,Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Zn, Mn and Cu from cotyledons of parent seedsof both species to the seedling axis was measured from germinationto the time of cotyledon death. N, P, K and S were retrievedfrom cotyledons with over 90 per cent efficiency, dry matter,Mg, Na, Fe, Zn, Mn and with 59–90 per cent efficiency,and Ca with 26–31 per cent efficiency. There was littlechange in the efficiency of nutrient retrieval from cotyledonswhen seedlings were grown in different culture media. Both speciesshowed a linear relationship between the loss of each elementand dry matter throughout the experiment, and a similar proportioningbetween root and shoot of the amount of a specific nutrientmobilized from cotyledons of parent seeds. Rooted one-year shoots were grown for one season by sprayingtheir roots with nutrient solution. Iron supplied as Fe-EDTAat four concentrations resulted in plants which were respectively(a) severely chlorotic, (b) mildly chlorotic, (c) dark greenand healthy (controls), and (d) dark green but with slight reductionin growth. Severely deficient plants showed 40–70 per cent reductionsin growth as measured by fresh weight, shoot length, diameterincrease, leaf area, net assimilation and relative growth-rates.Dry weights were reduced 70–80 per cent and of the totaldry-weight increment a greater proportion remained in the leaves,which had a lower dry weight and higher water content per unitarea. However, because the initial old stem formed a greaterproportion of the total dry weight, the leaf area ratio remainedabout 11 per cent lower than in the controls. Severely deficientplants had, per unit of chlorophyll, a higher dry-weight increaseand net assimilation rate than the controls. Mild deficiency caused 10–20 per cent reductions in growthand net assimilation rate; the leaf area ratio was normal. Possible mechanisms of the effects of low iron supply are discussed,while the small growth reduction at the highest Fe-EDTA concentrationis attributed to chelate toxicity  相似文献

Maize (Zea mays L., cultivar Pioneer 3925) plants were givenshaded, thinned and control light treatments during 10 d or20 d periods surrounding pollination. Glucose, sucrose, starch,and dry matter (DM) contents were measured at intervals in compositesamples of pericarp/nucellus (PN), and in endosperms taken fromdeveloping kernels. Total kernel DM per ear at maturity washigher in the thinned treatment than control and shaded treatmentsdue to higher kernel set in apical regions of ears. In PNs at11 d after pollination (DAP), DM and sucrose contents were slightlygreater in thinned than control and shaded plants. Glucose contentswere substantially greater than controls in PNs of thinned plantsand were less than controls in shaded plants. In endospermsfrom apical kernels at 8 to 12 DAP (during cell division), DM,glucose and sucrose contents were substantially less in shadedthan control and thinned plants. Sucrose contents were greaterin endosperms of thinned than control plants. Sugar contentsin endosperms from basal kernels were nearly the same in thethree light treatments. At 12 DAP, apical and basal endospermsin shaded plants had fewer nuclei than those of the other lighttreatments. The light treatments appeared to effect apical kernelgrowth by influencing the extent of cell division. The influence of varied supply of phosphorus (10 and 250 mmolP m–3) potassium (50 and 2010 mmol K m–3) and magnesium(20 and 1000 mmol Mg m–3) on the partitioning of dry matterand carbohydrates (reducing sugars, sucrose and starch) betweenshoots and roots was studied in bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) plantsgrown in nutrient solution over a 12 d period. Shoot and rootgrowth were quite differently affected by low supply of P, K,and Mg. The shoot/root dry weight ratios were 4.9 in the control(sufficient plants), 1.8 in P-deficient, 6.9 in K-deficientand 10.2 in Mg-deficient plants. In primary (source) leaves,but not in trifoliate leaves, concentrations of reducing sugars,sucrose and starch were also differently affected by low nutrientsupply. In primary leaves under K deficiency and, particularlyMg deficiency, the concentrations of sucrose and reducing sugarswere much higher than in control and P-deficient plants. Magnesiumdeficiency also distinctly increased the starch concentrationin the primary leaves. In contrast, in roots, the lowest concenfrationsof sucrose, reducing sugars and starch were found in Mg-deficientplants, whereas the concentrations of sucrose and starch wereparticularly high in P-deficient plants. There was a close relationshipbetween shoot/root dry weight ratios and relative distributionof total carbohydrates (sugars and starch) in shoot and roots.Of the total amounts of carbohyd rates per plant, the followingproportions were parti tioned to the roots: 22.7% in P-deficient,15.7% in control, 3.4% in K-deficient and 0.8% in Mg-deficientplants. The results indicate a distinct role of Mg and K in the exportof photosynthates from leaves to roots and suggest that alterationin photosynthate partitioning plays a major role in the differencesin dry matter distribution between shoots and roots of plantssuffering from mineral nutrient deficiency. Fluctuations in mineral elements id xylem (tracheal) sap, fruitphloem sap, leaflets and dmloping fruits were studied in a fieldpopulation of Lupinus angustifolius L. by three-hourly samplingover a 39 h period. Elements usually reached maximum contentsor concentrations at or near noon, minimum levels during thenight. Amplitudes of diurnal fluctuations in minerals lay withinthe range ±4–33 per cent of the mean content ofleaflets, and ±17–157 per cent of the mean concentrationsin xylem and phloem sap. Most minerals elements fluctuatcd inphase with daily changes in sugar level of phloem sap and drymatter and carbohydrate fluctuations of leaflets, suggestinga coupling of translocation of photosynthate and minerals fromthe leaflets. Rates of import of minerals by shoots wereestimatedfrom shoot transpiration and mineral concentrations in trachealsap. Average day time rates of import of most elements were12–25 times those at night. Translocation of minerals,nitrogen and carbon to fruits also exhibited diurnal periodicity,average rates of import king three to seven times higher inthe day than at night. A model of transport based on the carbonand water economy of the fruit suggested that P, K, Fe, Zn,Mn and Cu were imported predominantly by phloem. Estimates ofvascular import accounted for 87–104 per cent of the fruit'sactual increment of these elements. Na and Ca were gauged tobe imported mainly by xylem, Mg almost equally by xylem andphloem. However, large discrepancies existed for these threeelements between estimated vascular import and actual intakeby the fruit. The effect of genes ar (violet flowers, small hilum) and n (thick,fleshy pod wall) on whole plant in senescence peas was examinedby comparing Ar- with arar and N- with nn plants in segregatingprogenies. Homozygosity for ar or n significantly delayed the time whenthe plants were ready for harvest of their entire seed crop.These genes did not delay either the onset of reproduction orthe onset of apical arrest in the first instance. However, whereasAr- N- plants almost invariably senesced and died as the firstseed crop matured, the majority of arar and/or nn plants entereda period of secondary growth and a further fruiting cycle. Comparedwith Ar- plants, arar plants had over twice as many pods andseeds but individual seeds were 58 per cent lighter and totalseed yield (wt) was 19 per cent less. Pod length was unaffected.Compared with N-plants, nn plants had shorter pods (16 per cent),fewer seeds per pod (21 per cent), smaller seeds (20 per cent)and a lower total seed yield (wt 14 per cent less). It appearsthat ar and n impose a lower metabolic drain per reproductivenode as a consequence of their effects on hilum anatomy andpod morphology, respectively. These mutants disrupt the normalpattern of monocarpic senescence by breaking the coordinationbetween apical arrest and subsequent events. The developingseed crop delimited by the first arrest fails to cause plantdeath, possibly because sink size is less than in normal counterparts. Magnesium (Mg) has been proposed to take part in biochemical dysregulation contributing to psychiatric disorders. The aims of this study was to estimate acute behavioural responses to clonidine (0.1 mg/kg i.p.), d-amphetamine (5 mg/kg, i.p), arecoline (15 mg/kg i.p), nicotine (6 mg/kg i.p.), apomorphine (1.5 mg/kg i.p.) and L-5-hydroxytryptophan (300 mg/kg i.p.) in rats fed with Mg-deprivated diet for 49 days and then treated with organic and inorganic Mg salts (50 mg Mg per kg) ether alone or in combination with pyridoxine (5 mg vitamin B6 per kg). In our study Mg-deficient rats were more sensitive to d-amphetamine-induced motor stereotypes compared with control rats; time of onset of the stereotypies insignificantly decreased by 14.89% and duration of the stereotypies significantly increased by 19.44% (320.36 +/- 19.90 vs. 268.23 +/- 8.17 minutes; p = 0.043). Mg deficiency did not modulate sensitivity to nicotine-induced seizure. The time between nicotine injection and emergence of clonic seizure (seizure latency) in the controls and Mg-deficient rats were 0.80 +/- 0.26 and 0.96 +/- 0.21 minutes respectively. Duration of the seizures in the controls and Mg-deficient rats were 64.93 +/- 7.20 and 79.32 +/- 8.13 minutes. In our study, Mg deficiency did not affect on clonidine- and apomorphine-induced hypothermia. Clonidine produced similar decreases in rectal temperature in controls and Mg-deficient group. In experiments using apomorphine, values of hypothermia were similar to those observed with clonidine. Mg deficiency antagonized 5-hydroxytryptophan-induced head-twitch response. The number of head twitches produced by 5-hydroxytryptophan was significantly (p = 0.49) decreased: twofold in magnesium-deficient rats (1.23 +/- 0.44 per minute) as compared with controls (2.42 +/- 0.52 per minute). Arecoline-induced tremor was comparably less expressed in Mg-deficient rats than in controls. The time between arecoline injection and time of onset of the tremor in the controls and Mg-deficient rats were 92.75 +/- 19.35 and 245.17 +/- 121.86 seconds respectively (p < or = 0.035). Duration of the tremors in the controls and Mg-deficient rats were 1175.58 +/- 127.87 and 703.83 +/- 89.33 seconds (p = 0.015). Magnesium salts (Mg chloride, Mg L-aspartate alone and in combination with B6) were administered through gastric tube during twenty days up to complete compensation oferythrocyte and plasma Mg levels in all experimental groups. In our study administration of Mg salts resulted in normalization of acute behavioural responses in Mg-deficient rats to d-amphetamine, arecoline, and L-5-hydroxytryptophan. Behavioural responses in rats treated with both Mg chloride and Mg L-aspartate in combinations with B6 were comparable with those observed in MagneB6 treatment.  相似文献

One-year rooted shoots of M.VII apple rootstock were grown fora single season by spraying their roots continuously with nutrientsolutions containing either < 3 ppmMg(Mg(0)) or 45 ppm(Mg(0))to give, respectively, potentially very deficient or healthyplants. The new shoots of half the plants in each of these treatmentswere dipped periodically in a 2 per cent solution of MgSO4.7H2O plus ‘wetter’. Mg(0) undipped plants developed severe symptoms of Mg deficiency,growth was poor, and the shoot/root dry-weight increment ratiowas high; none of these characteristics was found in Mg(0) dippedplants, whose growth was not appreciably less than that of Mg(2)undipped controls. There was little translocation of Mg from leaves to roots: theconcentration of Mg in roots of Mg(0) dipped plants was as lowas that of the undipped. The large accumulation of Mn and, toa less extent, of Fe in Mg(0) dipped roots was not apparentlydetrimental to growth. Growth of Mg(2) dipped plants was similar to that of the undipped. Dipping had little effect on the chemical composition of leaves,except to raise the concentration of Mg.  相似文献

Stem-root grafts of seedling plants were used to ascertain thatgenotypic differences in P, Mg, Mn, and B accumulation in soyabean(Glycine max L. Merr.) seeds are controlled by the scion ofthe plant. The effect of the graft per se on mineral accumulationwas negligible. These results are similar to those reportedfor Sr and Ca accumulation in soyabeans. Olax phyllanthi was found to parasitize a wide range of taxain the native habitat in coastal heath, South-West Australia.All major life and growth forms were regularly exploited, includingmost woody dicotyledons (except members of the Myrtaceae), afew monocotyledons and cohabiting root hemiparasites. Initiationof haustoria occurred mostly in autumn (southern hemisphere),with some senescing the following summer, and others survivinguntil replaced by a new generation of haustoria the followingautumn. Seedlings increased in dry matter and contents of N,P, K, Mg and Ca during preparasitic development, but did notsurvive beyond 6 months if failing to establish haustoria ona suitable host. Plant dry matter, mineral content and haustorialnumber increased exponentially during subsequent parasitic development.Mean shoot:root d. wt ratios of 1st to 3rd-year plants lay withinthe range 1.2–1.4. Root systems were laterally extensiveand restricted to the top 40 cm of rooting substrate. Mean totalroot lengths of 2nd- and 3rd-year plants were 7.1m (n = 5) and60.9 m (n = 5), respectively. Haustoria comprised 0.7–3.5%of plant d. wt, with a mean of 7.9 haustoria (n = 10, 2nd- and3rd-year plants) per metre of root length. Comparisons of mineralconcentrations in dry matter of O. phyllanthi and of a rangeof commonly parasitized hosts showed the parasite to be muchricher on average than its hosts in K, P, and to a lesser extentin N, but not noticeably different in Mg and Ca. Mineral nutrients of seeds constitute a significant source ofessential elements to seedlings and developing individuals ofvascular plants. In spite of their potential ecological significance,seed nutrient pools have attracted little attention with respectto calcifuge–calcicole behaviour of plants. The objectivesof this study were, therefore, to compare concentrations of13 macro- and micronutrients (K, Rb, Mg, Ca, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu,Zn, Mo, B, P and S) in seeds and leaves of 35 mainly herbaceousvascular plant species growing on both limestone (calcareous)and silicate (non-calcareous) soils. Concentrations of Rb andCo in seeds of plants originating from limestone soils were,on average, about half of those from silicate soils. Concentrationsof Mn, Mg, Zn and P of seeds were, or tended to be, lower orslightly lower in limestone-soil plants, whereas mean Ca andMo concentrations were higher. Comparing seed and leaf concentrationsof the same species from limestone and silicate soils generallydemonstrated a high P enrichment ratio, but a particularly lowK enrichment ratio in seeds, valid for both types of soil. Itwas also apparent that Fe and Mn, micronutrients which are lessreadily solubilized and taken up by plants on limestone soils,had significantly higher seed:leaf concentration ratios in plantsfrom limestone than from silicate soils, whereas the oppositewas true for Ca. Epidermal and mesophyll tissues of Commelina communis L. andVicia faba L. were analysed by atomic absorption spectrometryfor the major plant inorganic cations and anions (K, Na, Ca,Mg, P, NO3-N, Cl) when stomata of the leaf were open and closed.Water-soluble and residual levels of the elements were estimatedand a charge balance of the soluble fraction made. The major portion of K, Na, Cl, and P was extracted in the water-solublefraction of the epidermal and mesophyll tissues of both species.In both species the bulk of Ca remained in the insoluble residueof the epidermis whereas in mesophyll tissue it was equallydistributed be-between the two fractions in C. communis butmainly in the insoluble residue in V. faba. Magnesium was predominantlyfound in the water-soluble fraction of V. faba mesophyll tissueand distributed approximately equally between the two fractionsin the epidermal tissue. In C. communis Mg was slightly moreabundant in the water-soluble fraction of both mesophyll andepidermis. In both species no statistically significant differences inthe levels of the elements could be detected between epidermaland mesophyll tissues from leaves with open stomata and thesame tissues from leaves with closed stomata, suggesting thatthere was no major flux of ions between mesophyll and epidermisduring stomatal movements. Regardless of whether the stomata were open or closed, therewere considerably more water-soluble inorganic cations thananions present in all tissues of both species with K being themajor cation and Cl being the major anion. In V.faba and C-communis epidermis there was 49–53 per cent and 56%68per cent excess cation respectively. In the mesophyll tissuethe excess cation was 63–75 per cent and 75%78 per centin V.faba and C. communis respectively. When the partitioning of the levels of the elements betweenepidermis and mesophyll of a leaf is considered, except forNO3-N in both species and Na in V. faba, 20 per cent or lessof each element was present in the epidermis.  相似文献

Seedlings of 12 genotypes were grown in pots and watered withnutrient solutions providing 0, 1, 6 and 20 mg equivalents ofnitrate per I. Increasing the external nitrate supply broughtabout increases in plant weight, nitrate, reduced nitrogen concentrationsand in vivo nitrate reductase activity. When given solutioncontaining 6 mg equivalents of nitrate per litre, the plantscontained approximately 0.1 per cent nitrate, a concentrationsimilarto that found in field-grown plantsat thesamestage of growth.At the 6 mg equivalent level nitrate supply, nitrate reductaseactivity was strongly positively correlated with the concentrationsof nitrate and reduced nitrogen and negatively correlated withplant weight. Similar, though weaker, correlations were foundat the lower and higher levels of nitrate supply. The two Triticalegenotypes however, had higher than average plant weights andnitrate reductase activities, while plants of the two Aegilopsspecies weighed much less, especially at the higher levels ofnitrate supply, than the average of all 12 genotypes and generallyhad correspondingly greater nitrate and reduced nitrogen concentrationsand nitrate reductase activities. For individual genotypes,plant weight at a given level of nitrate supply was stronglycorrelated with weight at all other levels. In a second experiment seedlings of 150 genotypes were grownin compost watered with 10 mM Ca(NO3)2 Nitrate and reduced nitrogenconcentrations were negatively correlated with plant weightbut there was no significant correlation between nitrate reductaseactivityand either plant weight, nitrate or reduced nitrogen concentration. The results are taken to indicate that genetic factors, otherthan those determining the supply of reduced nitrogen, werelimiting growth and that as a consequence small plants accumulatednitrate and reduced nitrogen compounds in greater concentrationsthan large ones. The greater nitrate concentrations in smallplants may have induced the increased nitrate reductase activityfound in these, as compared with larger plants. Because plantweight varied more than did reduced nitrogen concentration,variation in reduced nitrogen per plant was more highly correlatedwith plant weight than with per cent reduced nitrogen.  相似文献
