Parasites have the potential to decrease reproductive output of hosts by competing for nutrients or forcing hosts to invest in immune function. Conversely, reproductive output may affect parasite loads if hosts allocate resources to reproduction such that allocation to immune function is compromised. Both hypotheses implicitly have a temporal component, so we sampled parasites both before and after egg laying to examine the relationship between reproductive output (indexed using a combined measure of clutch size, egg volume, and initiation date) and blood parasite loads of American kestrels (Falco sparverius). Parasite loads measured prior to egg laying had no adverse effects on subsequent reproductive output. Females that previously had large reproductive outputs subsequently had lower parasite intensities than those whose outputs were smaller, suggesting that females were capable of allocating energy to both forming clutches and reducing parasite loads. Because male kestrels provide most of their mate's energetic needs before, during, and after egg laying, mate choice by females may have consequences for their parasite loads. Females choosing high-quality mates may not only have increased reproductive output, but may also obtain sufficient resources from their mates to enable them to reduce their parasite burdens. Males whose mates had large reproductive outputs were more likely to subsequently be parasitized and have more intense infections. For individual males sampled both before and after egg laying, those whose mates had larger reproductive outputs were also more likely to become parasitized, or remain parasitized, between sampling periods. Increased parasite loads of males may be one mechanism by which the costs of reproduction are paid. 相似文献

The effect of power-frequency electric fields on invertebrate movement and behavior was studied. Data was obtained in the vicinity of an operating 500-kV powerline, and from underneath a simulated powerline (where the electric field could be controlled). Electric fields greater than 8-10 kV/m affected the behavior of flying insects; small insects could not fly, and large insects avoided the high-field region. Electric fields lowered both the activity of mosquitoes (to attack the host) and insect flower attendance. The prevalence of most non-flying insect species was not altered by the electric field, probably because of screening of the electric fields by vegetation and the ability of the insects to migrate. The existing Soviet safety standards for high-voltage powerlines seem sufficient to protect invertebrates. 相似文献

It is well known that the extremely low-frequency electromagnetic field (EMF) can promote the healing of bone fractures, but its mechanism remains poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to examine the response of neonatal rat calvarial bone cells to the rectangular electromagnetic field (REMF), triangular electromagnetic field (TEMF), sinusoidal electromagnetic field (SEMF), and pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF). The stimulatory effects of EMF were evaluated by the proliferation (methyltetrazolium colorimetric assay), differentiation (alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity), and mineralization (area of mineralized nodules of the cells). REMF treatment of osteoblasts increased cellular proliferation and decreased ALP activity (p < 0.05). TEMF had an accelerative effect on the cellular mineralized nodules (p < 0.05). SEMF treatment of osteoblasts decreased the cellular proliferation, increased ALP activity, and suppressed mineralized nodules formation (p < 0.05). PEMF promoted the proliferation of osteoblasts, inhibited their differentiation, and increased the mineralized nodules formation (p < 0.05). Moreover, the effects of PEMF on osteoblasts were concerned with the extracellular calcium, P2 receptor on the membrane, and PLC pathway, but the response of osteoblasts on SEMF was only related to PLC pathway. The results suggested that the waveforms of EMF were the crucial parameters to induce the response of osteoblasts. 相似文献

The orientation behavior of Euglena gracilis cultures in electromagnetic fields is shown to agree with the predictions of a model involving only a passive mechanism. The increase in Euglena motor activity with increasing field intensity is demonstrated by measuring various motion parameters by the laser scattering technique. The effect of electric field on the speed of Euglenas is compared with that of temperature. We conclude that the electric field warms up the culture, thus inducing an increase in cell motility. 相似文献

The effects of electromagnetic fields on lichens were investigated. Field experiments of long duration (1–3 years) were combined with laboratory experiments and theoretical considerations. Samples of the lichen species Parmelia tiliacea and Hypogymnia physodes were exposed to microwaves (2.45 GHz; 0.2, 5, and 50 m W/cm2; and control). Both species showed a substantially reduced growth rate at 50 m W/cm2. A differentiation between thermal and nonthermal effects was not possible. Temperature measurements on lichens exposed to microwaves (2.45 GHz, 50 m W/cm2) showed a substantial increase in the surface temperature and an accelerated drying process. The thermal effect of microwave on lichens was verified. The exposure of lichens of both species was repeated near a short-wave broadcast transmitter (9.5 MHz, amplitude modulated; maximum field strength 235 V/m, 332 mA/m). No visible effects on the exposed lichens were detected. At this frequency, no thermal effects were expected, and the experimental results support this hypothesis. Theoretical estimates based on climatic data and literature showed that the growth reductions in the initial experiments could very likely have been caused by drying of the lichens from the heating with microwaves. The results of the other experiments support the hypothesis that the response of the lichens exposed to microwaves was mainly due to thermal effects and that there is a low probability of nonthermal effects. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

The effects of extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields of 75 Hz were studied on different membrane-associated enzymes. Only the activities of three enzymes out of seven exposed to the field decreased approximately of about 54-61% with field amplitudes above a threshold of 73-151 microT depending on the enzyme. The same field had no effect on the activities of either integral membrane enzymes such as Ca,ATPase, Na/K,ATPase, and succinic dehydrogenase or peripheral membrane enzymes such as photoreceptor PDE. The decrease in enzymatic activity of the field-sensitive enzymes was independent of the time of permanence in the field and was completely reversible. When these enzymes were solubilized with Triton, no effect of the field was obtained on the enzymatic activity, suggesting the crucial role of the membrane in determining the conditions for enzyme inactivation. The role of the particular linkage of the field-sensitive enzymes to the membranes is also discussed. 相似文献

Several indices of reproductive skew, which quantify the degree of unequal partitioning of reproductive output among members
in an animal society, have been proposed. Here we point out the drawbacks of these indices. The most serious problem is the
dependence of the indices on mean reproductive success: skew values tend to be larger, as average numbers of offspring decrease,
due to random sampling error in numbers of offspring. Thus it is difficult to compare societies with different average lifetime
reproductive success using these indices, even though we have presented methods to calculate the expected reproductive skew
caused by random sampling error, especially when average numbers of offspring are small, as is often the case with cooperatively
breeding vertebrates. As an alternative, we propose using the spatial dispersion indices of population ecology (Morisita's
index or its standardized version) for the measurement of reproductive skew. These indices are almost independent of average
fecundity and have their own method of testing for random variation in offspring numbers.

ABSTRACTElectromagnetic fields (EMFs) as a safe, effective and noninvasive treatment have been researched and used for many years in orthopedics, and the common use clinically is to promote fracture healing. The effects of EMFs on osteoporosis have not been well concerned. The balance between osteoblast and osteoclast activity as well as the balance between osteogenic differentiation and adipogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells plays an important role in the process of osteoporosis. A number of recent reports suggest that EMFs have a positive impact on the balances. In this review, we discuss the recent advances of EMFs in the treatment of osteoporosis from basic research to clinical study and introduce the possible mechanism. To determine reproductive success, it is necessary for the researcher to specify a criterion of success, such as the number of a parent's offspring living to the age of reproduction. A measurement model, which includes the researcher's choice of criterion, has been proposed to estimate the lifetime reproductive success (R) of long-lived animals from complete or incomplete knowledge of the reproductive life histories of mothers and the survival fates of offspring. This research uses R and data from female baboons of Mikumi National Park, Tanzania, as vehicles to investigate the relationship between reproductive success and several criteria. Secondarily, it also investigates the relationship between R and the number and rate of offspring production. Seven criteria of reproductive success, ranging in 12-month increments from 0 (birth) to 72 months of offspring life, were applied to 10.5 years of reproductive data from 61 Mikumi females. Theoretically, the best scenario for comparative purposes is an invariant R across different criteria; however, the mean R systematically increased as the criteria increased. This is more an inconvenience than a serious problem because high correlations indicate high predictability between Rs from pairs of criteria. R was modestly correlated with the rate of offspring production, indicating that rate can be employed as a rough index of reproductive success. The choice of a criterion is a trade off between theory, practicality, the strength of the criterion, and the effect of the choice upon sample representativeness and size. Am. J. The number of mates, their fecundity, and the number of extra-pairfertilizations can all affect male reproductive success in biparentalspecies. Extra-pair mating in birds has been of particular interest,because it could generate strong levels of sexual selectioneven when a species is socially monogamous. We examined howextra-pair fertilizations affect the opportunity for selectionin the sexually dimorphic common yellowthroat (Geothlypis trichas)and the sexually monomorphic house wren (Troglodytes aedon).We were able to identify sires for at least 95% of all nestlings,and, thus, we were able to make a nearly complete accountingof male reproductive success. Although extra-pair fertilizationswere common in yellowthroats (26% of young) it contributed little(21%) to the total variance in male reproductive success. Mostof the variance in reproductive success (58%) was attributableto the male's within-pair success, which was influenced primarilyby the number of young produced by each mate and the proportionof within-pair young sired. Despite a moderate level of extra-pairfertilizations (10% of young) in house wrens, almost all ofthe variance in male reproductive success (97%) was attributableto within-pair success, particularly the number of social mates.Although extra-pair fertilizations generally increase the variancein male reproductive success, within-pair reproductive successmay be the major source of variation in male reproductive success.Thus, sexual dimorphism in monogamous birds may be influencedmore by the number of mates and their fecundity than by extra-pairmatings. 相似文献

Effects of low-intensity pulsed electromagnetic fields on the early development of sea urchins.

The effects of weak electromagnetic signals on the early development of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus have been studied. The duration and repetition of the pulses were similar to those used for bone healing in clinical practice. A sequence of pulses, applied for a time ranging from 2 to 4 h, accelerates the cleavages of sea urchin embryo cells. This effect can be quantitatively assessed by determining the time shifts induced by the applied electromagnetic field on the completion of the first and second cleavages in a population of fertilized eggs. The exposed embryos were allowed to develop up to the pluteus stage, showing no abnormalities. 相似文献

We have investigated the effects of sinusoidal electromagnetic fields (EMF) on ion transport (Ca2+, Na+, K+, and H+) in several cell types (red blood cells, thymocytes, Ehrlich ascites tumor cells, and HL60 and U937 human leukemia cells). The effects on the uptake of radioactive tracers as well as on the cytosolic Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i), the intracellular pH (pHi), and the transmembrane potentsial (TMP) were studied. Exposure to EMF at 50 Hz and 100–2000 μT (rms) had no significant effects on any of these parameters. Exposure to EMF of 20–1200 μT (rms) at the estimated cyclotron magnetic resonance frequencies for the respective ions had no significant effects except for a 12–32% increase of the uptake of 42K within a window at 14.5–15.5 Hz and 100–200 μT (rms), which was found in U937 and Ehrlich cells but not in the other cell types. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

The survival rate for offspring of mothers who either had or did not have previous experience rearing younger siblings was compared in two callitrichid species, Callithrix jacchus and Saguinus oedipus. Offspring of mothers with sibling-rearing experience had a higher survival percentage than offspring of inexperienced mothers in both species. While 50–60% of offspring of inexperienced C. jacchus mothers survived, no offspring of inexperienced S. oedipus mothers survived. The results suggest that sibling-rearing experience is necessary for adequate maternal behavior in S. oedipus, but not necessary to the development of maternal behavior in C. jacchus. Effects of previous sibling-rearing experience of S. oedipus fathers on offspring survival were also examined. Ants are common visitors to the flowers of Euphorbia cyparissias , and also often forage on E. cyparissias stems that are infected by rust fungi of the species complex Uromyces pisi . These fungi sterilise their host, produce nectar and require insects for their sexual reproduction. Our objective was to determine whether ant visits enhance the sexual reproduction of either E. cyparissias or the rust fungi. Uromyces pisi is known to be obligately outcrossing, whereas a breeding system experiment established that E. cyparissias can self, but sets more seeds when outcrossed. We used insect exclusion experiments to test whether ants fertilise the rust fungi and to determine whether ants are pollinators of E. cyparissias . These experiments showed that insect pollination is necessary for seed set and that ants can pollinate the flowers. However, ants do not fertilise the rust fungi. 相似文献

The Reed Warbler Acrocephalus scirpaceus is a largely monogamous insectivorous passerine in which males and females provide equal care by day to eggs and chicks. Polygyny occurs occasionally, with males leaving one female unaided. When females were temporarily removed from three recently-completed clutches their males deserted and resumed the high song levels typical of unmated males. Males may desert either because they are physically incapable of incubation or because the energy expenditure needed for a male to return to an equivalent stage in the breeding cycle is much lower than for a female to do so. Widowed females ( n = 7 ), however, continued the breeding attempt alone, with similar incubation levels but higher provisioning rates than those of control females. In three out of four mid-season broods raised by lone females all fertile eggs were reared to healthy fledglings (in the fourth brood the female died), while only one of four late-season nests produced any fledglings (which were underweight). Late-season control nests were as successful as earlier ones. Loss of male help led to starvation of chicks, but caused no adverse effects during incubation. This explains the small changes in widows' sitting levels during incubation, but much greater effects after hatching. Females may need male help to rear late broods (but not early broods) as days are shorter and food is scarcer. Males may normally help at nests, even those in the mid-season, because in stressful spells (even for a few days) such help is vital for successful breeding but in good periods it costs the male little. 相似文献

1. Few studies have experimentally quantified the costs and benefits of female egg-guarding behaviour in arthropods under field conditions. Moreover, there is also a lack of studies assessing separately the survival and fecundity costs associated with this behavioural trait. 2. Here we employ field experimental manipulations and capture-mark-recapture methods to identify and quantify the costs and benefits of egg-guarding behaviour for females of the harvestman Acutisoma proximum Mello-Leit?o, a maternal species from south-eastern Brazil. 3. In a female removal experiment that lasted 14 days, eggs left unattended under natural conditions survived 75.6% less than guarded eggs, revealing the importance of female presence preventing egg predation. 4. By monitoring females' reproductive success for 2 years, we show that females experimentally prevented from guarding their eggs produced new clutches more frequently and had mean lifetime fecundity 18% higher than that of control guarding females. 5. Regarding survival, our capture-mark-recapture study does not show any difference between the survival rates of females prevented from caring and that of control guarding females. 6. We found that experimentally females prevented from guarding their eggs have a greater probability to produce another clutch (0.41) than females that cared for the offspring (0.34), regardless of their probability of surviving long enough to do that. 7. Our approach isolates the ecological costs of egg-guarding that would affect survival, such as increased risk of predation, and suggests that maternal egg-guarding also constrains fecundity through physiological costs of egg production. 8. Weighting costs and benefits of egg-guarding we demonstrate that the female's decision to desert would imply an average reduction of 73.3% in their lifetime fitness. Despite the verified fecundity costs of egg-guarding, this behaviour increases female fitness due to the crucial importance of female presence aimed to prevent egg predation. 相似文献

To investigate the effects of high frequency electromagnetic fields (HFEMFs), we assessed the frequency of micronucleus (MN) formation induced by chromosomal breakage or inhibition of spindles during cell division in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO)-K1 cells, using the cytokinesis block micronucleus method. The MN frequency in cells in the inner, middle and outer wells of an annular culture plate was determined for the following four conditions: (1) CHO-K1 cells were exposed to a HFEMF for 18 h at average specific absorption rates (SARs) of 13, 39 and 50 W/kg with input power 7.8 W, and were compared with a sham-exposed control; (2) the cells were also exposed to a HFEMF at SARs of 78 and 100 W/kg with input power 13 W, and were compared with a sham-exposed control; (3) the cells were treated with bleomycin alone or with bleomycin followed by exposure to a HFEMF for 18 h at SARs of 25, 78 and 100 W/kg, and were compared with a bleomycin-treated positive control. The cells treated with bleomycin alone were compared with sham-exposed controls; and (4) As a high temperature control, CHO-K1 cells were incubated at 39 degrees C for 18 h. In study (1), the MN frequency of cells exposed to a HFEMF at a SAR of up to 50 W/kg was not different to that in sham-exposed cells. In study (2), there were statistically significant increases in the MN frequencies of cells in the middle and outer wells of the annular culture plate caused by exposure to a HFEMF at 100 and 78 W/kg, respectively. In study (3), the MN frequencies of cells in the middle (100 W/kg) and outer wells (78 W/kg) of the annular culture plate were statistically higher than that caused by bleomycin-treatment alone. In study (4), there was a statistically significant increase of MN frequency in the cells treated by heat at 39 degrees C.These results indicate that cells exposed to a HFEMF at a SAR of 78 W/kg and higher form MN more frequently than sham-exposed cells, while exposure to a HFEMF at up to 50 W/kg does not induce MN formation. In addition, a HFEMF at a SAR of 78 W/kg and higher may potentiate MN formation induced by bleomycin-treatment. 相似文献
