The effect of diet (made from either animal or plant material) on the partitioning of energy in small (8-16 mm test diameter (td)) and large (29-37 mm td) Psammechinus miliaris was examined. Diet significantly affected ingestion, digestion and growth of both size groups. Assimilation rates of the different types of feed varied and they supported differential development of the body parts. Urchins fed on an algal diet showed poorer absorption efficiency, assimilation, gonadal and somatic growth than individuals fed on an artificial sea urchin diet (mixed plant and animal material) or on the animal based diets. Small urchins fed on a diet of salmon food utilised proteins as the primary energy source rather than carbohydrates or lipids as indicated by low O/N atomic ratios, and salmon diet promoted a higher energetic investment in reproductive development in both size classes. A negative energy balance resulted when large urchins were fed on the algal diet. Energy losses due to ammonia excretion were negligible and the metabolic losses of assimilated energy, measured as oxygen consumption, were between 0.2% and 1.5% with the different diets. A diet made of mussel flesh stimulated ingestion, gave the highest assimilation rates and best overall growth performance. Such detailed information should assist in the design of diets for the cultivation of sea urchins.  相似文献

Different levels of dried Jerusalem artichoke were fed to entire male pigs 1 week before slaughter. The objective was to investigate the effect on skatole level in the hindgut and in adipose tissue, as well as the effect on microflora and short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) in the hindgut. Five experimental groups (n = 11) were given different dietary treatments 7 days before slaughtering: negative control (basal diet), positive control (basal diet + 9% chicory-inulin), basal diet + 4.1% Jerusalem artichoke, basal diet + 8.1% Jerusalem artichoke and basal diet + 12.2% Jerusalem artichoke. Samples from colon, rectum, faeces and adipose tissue were collected. Effect of dietary treatment on skatole, indole and androstenone levels in adipose tissue and on skatole, indole, pH, dry matter (DM), microbiota and SCFA in the hindgut was evaluated. Feeding increasing levels of Jerusalem artichoke to entire male pigs reduced skatole in digesta from colon and in faeces (linear, P < 0.01). There was also a tendency towards a decreased level of skatole in adipose tissue (linear, P = 0.06). Feeding Jerusalem artichoke decreased DM content in colon and faeces and pH in colon (linear, P < 0.01). Increasing levels of Jerusalem artichoke resulted in a reduced level of Clostridium perfringens in both colon and rectum (linear, P < 0.05) and a tendency towards decreased levels of enterobacteria in colon (linear, P = 0.05). Further, there was an increase in total amount of SCFA (linear, P < 0.05), acetic acid (linear, P < 0.05) and valerianic acid (linear, P < 0.01) in faeces. In conclusion, adding dried Jerusalem artichoke to diets for entire male pigs 1 week before slaughter resulted in a dose-dependent decrease in skatole levels in the hindgut and adipose tissue. The reduced skatole levels might be related to the decrease in C. perfringens and the increase in SCFA with subsequent reduction in pH.  相似文献

Seven groups of three sheep were given pelleted diets as follows: A, 97% hay + 3% molasses; B, C, D, 82% hay + 3% molasses + 15% dried pig faeces; E, F, G, 67% hay + 3% molasses + 30% dried pig faeces. In an attempt to counteract potential toxic effects of copper in the pig faeces (613 mg/kg dry matter), molybdenum was added to diets C and F at the rate of 90 mg/kg diet, and to diets D and G at the rate of 175 mg/kg diet. Sulphate was included in all diets at the rate of 1.08% of diet. Measurements were made of digestibility, copper retention, and plasma glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) values during a 70-day feeding period, after which the animals were slaughtered.Dry matter digestibility coefficients were : diet A, 49.2; diets B, C, D, 44.4; diets E, F, G, 42.5, from which the coefficient for pig faeces alone is calculated to be < 30. Mean copper retention over the 70 days ranged from 210 mg for diet A to 1225 mg for diet G (excluding diet E which showed an aberrant retention of 53 ± 185 mg). Plasma GOT values fluctuated between diets and between sheep with a maximum value of 182 units/ml. Mean liver copper concentrations ranged from 718 mg/kg dry matter for diet A to 1740 mg/kg for diet E. Necrotic lesions occurred in some livers. Kidneys were apparently normal. There were no clear differences in copper status of animals receiving 15% versus 30% pig faeces except for a tendency for liver damage to be greater in the latter. There were no apparent effects of additions of molybdenum. The pig faeces were poorly utilized and, because of the high copper content, potentially hazardous to the health of the sheep.  相似文献

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of incorporation into pig diets of 20% of different co-products from the biofuel industries, which are rich in fibre, on animal growth performance, on nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) excretions, and on the subsequent ammonia volatilisation and methane production during the storage of slurry. Five experimental diets mainly based on wheat and soyabean meal were formulated: two control diets, a control high-protein (CHP) diet with 17.5% of crude protein (CP) and a control low-protein (CLP) diet with 14.0% of CP and three experimental diets with 20% of (i) dried distiller's grain with solubles (DDGS), (ii) sugar beet pulp (SBP) or (iii) fatty rapeseed meal (FRM). The animals used (20 castrated males) were housed individually in metabolism cages and fed one of the five diets (i.e. four pigs per diet). Urine and faeces were collected separately from each pig in order to measure nutrient digestibility and the excretory patterns of N and C. For each diet, ammonia volatilisation was measured from samples of slurry subsequently produced, over a 16-day storage period in a laboratory pilot scale system. The ultimate methane potential (B0, expressed in litres CH4/kg organic matter (OM)) was measured from the same slurry, for each diet, in anaerobic storage conditions over 100 days. The addition of sources of fibres to the diet decreased (P < 0.05) the animal growth performance by 13% and increased (P < 0.05) the amount of faeces excreted by 100%, whereas the amount of urine was not affected. For the high-fibre diets, there was a shift of N partitioning from urine to faeces, resulting in a much higher faecal N excretion (10 v. 5 g N/pig per day). Concurrently, the fibre enrichment in diets significantly increased (P < 0.05) the C content of the faeces by 68%. Ammonia emission from slurry was significantly reduced (P < 0.05) by 19% to 33% for the high-fibre diets, compared to the CHP diet. Ammonia emission was also reduced (P < 0.05) by 33% for the CLP compared to the CHP diet. B0 values ranged from 428 to 484 l CH4/kg OM. When these are expressed per pig and per day, the B0 from slurry was, on average, 70 l for the two control diets, and 121, 91 and 130 l for the slurry originating from the DDGS, SBP and FRM diets, respectively.  相似文献

The fruit diets of Sylvia warblers, and some thrushes, were studied during 1989 at a coastal scrubland site, using faecal examination. Fruit feeding commenced as the earliest berries ripened in late July, but there were differences of timing between species. Amongst both warblers and thrushes, the larger species commenced earlier and ate more fruit. Almost all Blackcap and Garden Warbler faeces examined from early August contained some fruit remains, as did most Whitethroat faeces from mid-month. Mean fruit contents of faecal samples exceeded 80% infrequently, indicating that even the most frugivorous species always took other food, normally insects, to supplement their diet. Each species differed in their fruit diet: Blackcaps, and to a lesser extent Garden Warblers, ate Woody Nightshade berries in preference to Blackberries, as they are structurally adapted for feeding on the former plant. Only inexperienced juveniles of other species regularly chose the Nightshade berries. Elder berries, abundant from late August, became the preferred fruit for all Sylvia species. Using data from an earlier investigation, 1 it is shown that by feeding on Elder berries, migrating Blackcaps can obtain 75–90% of their daily energy requirements in 10% of daylight hours.  相似文献

A 2 × 2 factorial experiment was conducted to investigate the interaction between high and low dietary crude protein (CP) (200 v. 150 g/kg) and sugar-beet pulp (SBP) (200 v. 0 g/kg) on nutrient digestibility, nitrogen (N) excretion, intestinal fermentation and manure ammonia and odour emissions from 24 boars (n = 6, 74.0 kg live weight). The diets were formulated to contain similar concentrations of digestible energy (13.6 MJ/kg) and lysine (10.0 g/kg). Pigs offered SBP-containing diets had a reduced (P < 0.05) digestibility of dry matter, ash, N, gross energy and an increased (P < 0.001) digestibility of neutral-detergent fibre compared with pigs offered diets containing no SBP. There was an interaction between CP and SBP on urinary N excretion and the urine : faeces N ratio. Pigs offered the 200 g/kg CP SBP-based diet had reduced urine : faeces N ratio (P < 0.05) and urinary N excretion (P < 0.05) compared with those offered the 200 g/kg CP diet without SBP. However, there was no effect of SBP in pigs offered 150 g/kg CP diets. Manure ammonia emissions were reduced by 33% from 0 to 240 h (P < 0.01); however, odour emissions were increased by 41% (P < 0.05) when pigs were offered SBP diets. Decreasing dietary CP to 150 g/kg reduced total N excretion (P < 0.001) and ammonia emissions from 0 to 240 h (P < 0.05). There was an interaction between dietary CP and SBP on branched-chain fatty acids (P < 0.001) in caecal digesta. Pigs offered the 200 g/kg CP SBP-containing diet reduced branched-chain fatty acids in the caecum compared with pigs offered the 200 g/kg CP diet containing no SBP. However, there was no effect of SBP in the 150 g/kg CP diet. In conclusion, pigs offered SBP-containing diets had a reduced manure ammonia emissions and increased odour emissions compared with diets containing no SBP. Pigs offered the 200 g/kg CP SBP-containing diet had a reduced urine : faeces N ratio and urinary N excretion compared with those offered the 200 g/kg CP diet containing no SBP.  相似文献

Factors determining the degree of dietary generalism versus specialism are central in ecology. Species that are generalists at the population level may in fact be composed of specialized individuals. The optimal diet theory assumes that individuals choose diets that maximize fitness, and individual specialization may occur if individuals'' ability to locate, recognize, and handle different food types differ. We investigate if individuals of the marine herbivorous slug Elysia viridis, which co-occur at different densities on several green macroalgal species in the field, are specialized to different algal hosts. Individual slugs were collected from three original algal host species (Cladophora sericea, Cladophora rupestris and Codium fragile) in the field, and short-term habitat choice and consumption, as well as long-term growth (proxy for fitness), on four algal diet species (the original algal host species and Chaetomorpha melagonium) were studied in laboratory experiments. Nutritional (protein, nitrogen, and carbon content) and morphological (dry weight, and cell/utricle volume) algal traits were also measured to investigate if they correlated with the growth value of the different algal diets. E. viridis individuals tended to choose and consume algal species that were similar to their original algal host. Long-term growth of E. viridis, however, was mostly independent of original algal host, as all individuals reached a larger size on the non-host C. melagonium. E. viridis growth was positively correlated to algal cell/utricle volume but not to any of the other measured algal traits. Because E. viridis feeds by piercing individual algal cells, the results indicate that slugs may receive more cytoplasm, and thus more energy per unit time, on algal species with large cells/utricles. We conclude that E. viridis individuals are specialized on different hosts, but host choice in natural E. viridis populations is not determined by the energetic value of seaweed diets as predicted by the ODT.  相似文献

The role of adult faeces in juvenile nutrition of two isopod species, Proasellus coxalis s.l. and Asellus aquaticus (L.), with similar trophic strategies and different reproductive output, has been studied in laboratory. Our aim was to consider the possible competitive mechanisms occurring at the beginning of the species coexistence using allopatric populations in single and mixed species experiments. Two series of competition experiments were performed. In the first, adult specimens were used for breeding and feeding trials. Both population dynamics and the percentage of ovigerous females and juveniles were evaluated during 10 months. Adult densities and juvenile percentage of A.aquaticus were lower in the presence of P. coxalis s.l. than when alone. At the end of the breeding experiments the dietary preferences of adults on a set of fungally conditioned leaf discs were not different among treatments. In the second series of experiments, the influence of coexistence on the feeding rates of young asellids and the relative importance of faeces and decaying plant material in their diet were investigated. Individual consumption by wild juveniles in multiple-choice laboratory experiments was measured by radioisotopes (32 2P). Juveniles of P. coxalis s.l. showed the highest ingestion rates. In co-occurrence, contrary to A.aquaticus, they were able to further increase feeding on parental faeces. The role of parental faeces in the diet of the two species juveniles and the competitive dominance of P. coxalis s.l. are discussed. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Ontogenetic shifts from insect consumption by juveniles to plant consumption by adults are rare in the herbivorous lizard family Iguanidae. My investigations on diet and digestive tract anatomy of the iguanid lizard Ctenosaura pectinata show that this species has an ontogenetic diet shift. Insects were rare in adult diets but constituted 86.5% (by volume) of the food eaten by the smallest juveniles. All age classes ate some plant parts from a range of plant types, but flowers and leaves of legumes were a primarily food source. Non-adult lizards had the widest food niche breadths. Arthropods in the diet of juveniles and immatures covaried seasonally with the decline of arthropod abundance. Several hypotheses could explain this ontogenetic plasticity in diet. I rejected hypotheses that gut structure constrained juveniles to an arthropod diet and that insect consumption was purely an artifact of plant consumption because (1) size-adjusted gut morphology and capacity was similar among age classes, and (2) no food plants sampled had an excessive density of arthropods. I supported an alternative hypothesis that juveniles can eat plants but do not because insects provide a more nutritious diet. This conclusion was based on the observation that the juvenile hindgut is similar to that of herbivorous adults, and the propensity for juveniles to consume primarily, but not exclusively, insects when they were most abundant. The hindgut represents the site of fermentative plant fiber breakdown in many herbivorous lizards. Insect foods can compensate for size-related nutritional needs (energy and protein) and digestive limitations in juveniles. Opportunistic feeding to maintain a broad diet might help juvenile and immature lizards through high-predation-risk growth periods by reducing searching costs, increasing nutritional and energetic gains due to associative effects, and increasing new food exposure. A feeding trial was conducted for 56 days to study the effect of replacement of fish meal by dried fish and chicken viscera, and a combination of oil cakes, in the diet of Clarias batrachus juveniles. The nutritional values of these by-products were studied through a digestibility experiment. No significant difference in nutrient digestibility was observed in different diets. Even 19.59% lipid in the diet of catfish did not affect the nutrient digestibility. Both amylolytic and proteolytic enzymes in the intestine of juveniles were studied. A decreased protease activity due to replacement of animal protein by plant protein and a decreased (P < 0.01) aspartate aminotransferase (ASAT) activity could be observed after inclusion of 22% of dried fish viscera in the diet of the catfish. Though body lipid content increased in fish fed a high level of lipid, fat-free body composition did not vary among the fish fed on different diets.  相似文献

Energy content, proximate nutrient values, passage rate, and digestive efficiency associated with various diet types and factors affecting these parameters have not been quantified for the North American river otter (Lontra canadensis). We measured energy digestive efficiency (DEff) and intestinal passage rate of three captive river otters on their regular diet (a combination of polar bear diet, cat food, and feline diet) and on test diets consisting of the constituent components of their regular diet. Gross energy, crude protein, crude fat, and crude fiber varied appreciably among diet components. Caloric DEff values were high (cat food and polar bear diet combination: 83.11%; regular diet: 86.62%; feline diet: 90.22%) indicating diets high in fat and protein permit greater energy absorption. Passage rates ranged from 167–188 minutes and were influenced by level of activity such that passage rate was more rapid at higher levels of activity. Coefficients of variation (CV) from DEff (CV=1.51) and digesta passage rates (CV=7.35) were dissimilar, indicating that a direct measure may yield a more precise estimate of absorption over digesta passage rates. To further understand energy handling by river otters on diets used in zoologic institutions and to better provide the nutrient dense diets this active species requires, additional studies quantifying energetic parameters for captive otters of various genders, ages, and reproductive conditions on other diet types are needed. The apparent digestibility of diets in which dried pig faeces replaced 0, 15, 30 and 45% of hay (diets A, B, C and D, respectively) was compared using four steers in an experiment of 4 × 4 Latin square design. All rations were readily consumed and no undesirable effect on animal health was observed. Each increase in the proportion of pig faeces in the diet reduced the apparent digestibility of the dietary components. The dry matter digestibility of diets A, B, C and D was 57.9, 52.4, 50.0 and 44.5%, respectively. Similar reductions occurred in the apparent digestibility of crude protein, crude fibre, ether extract and nitrogen-free extract.  相似文献

Increasing levels of a mixture of Ulva spp. produced in an integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) system were evaluated in Nile tilapia juveniles for partial replacement of dietary fish meal. A control diet (CTRL) was compared with three experimental diets containing 10 % (U10), 15 % (U15), and 20 % (U20) of Ulva spp. meal. Triplicate groups of fish (13 g initial body weight) were fed each diet for 63 days at 26 °C. Nutrient apparent digestibility coefficients and nitrogen retention efficiency did not vary significantly among diets. By the end of the trial, all groups of fish more than tripled their initial body weight. Specific growth rate and final body weight of U10 diet were similar to CTRL and significantly higher than U15 and U20 diets. Increasing Ulva dietary incorporation levels significantly increased feed conversion ratio (FCR), from 1.0 (CTRL) to 1.4 (U20). Fish fed with U10 diet had the highest protein efficiency ratio and nitrogen retention efficiency allowing this fish to growth and reach a final body weight similar to the CTRL group. Protein content was highest in fish fed with the CTRL diet, whereas the highest lipid content was observed in fish fed with U20 diet. The results show that the incorporation of IMTA-produced Ulva meal in Nile tilapia diets is possible up to 10 % without compromising growth performance, protein utilization, and protein retention of juveniles. The high capacity of Nile tilapia to digest all experimental diets suggests that Ulva meal is a practical partial replacement for fish meal in Nile tilapia diets.  相似文献

The effects of fibre in a pelleted diet on food intake, digestibility of crude fibre, dry matter and energy, on passage time and consistency of faeces were studied in 2 species of Callithricidae, Callithrix jacchus and Saguinus fuscicollis. Coarse cellulose, microcellulose, wheat bran and shrimp meal (chitin = crude fibre) were tested in diets containing 2,4 and 6% total crude fibre, respectively. Digestibility and passage time were determined by inclusion of 0.5% Cr2O3 in the diet. Both celluloses had little influence on the digestibility of energy and dry matter. Digestibility of crude fibre was very low. Wheat bran led to evident depression of energy and dry matter digestibility. High digestibility of crude fibre occurred at the higher levels of inclusion in the diet. Shrimp meal was highly digested with little influence on digestibility of energy and dry matter, indicating considerable degradation of chitin. Wheat bran showed a marked effect, while microcellulose had no effect on passage time, consistency and volume of faeces.  相似文献

Gastrointestinal diseases pose significant risks to captive cheetah survival and welfare. Multiple factors are thought to be associated with these diseases, but to date a comprehensive epidemiological survey of disease risk factors has not been conducted. A survey of diet and health parameters was completed for 184 captive cheetahs in 86 international facilities. Comparisons were made among dietary factors with respect to disease status and observed faecal consistency, incidence of vomiting and diarrhoea in the past 4 weeks. Extremely dry faeces were most common in cheetahs fed carcasses, but was still of low incidence (15%). Contrastingly, cheetahs fed commercially prepared diets had the highest prevalence of liquid faeces “always” or “often” (9%). Cheetahs fed raw meat diets had the highest prevalence of soft faeces with no shape (22%), as well as of firm and dry faeces (40%). No broad category of diet exerted any influence on the health parameters investigated. However, feeding of ribs at least once per week reduced the odds of diarrhoea (P = 0.020) and feeding of long bones (limbs) at least once per week was associated with a lower odds of vomiting (P = 0.008). Cheetahs fed muscle meat at least once per week had reduced odds of suffering from chronic gastritis (P = 0.005) or non-specific gastrointestinal disease (P < 0.001). The only factor identified as increasing the odds of chronic gastritis was feeding of horse “often” or “always” (P = 0.023). The findings of the current study build on existing empirical research to support a recommendation towards a greater inclusion of skeletal components. Current husbandry guidelines advocating the use of supplemented raw meat diets are likewise supported, but the use of horse meat, as well as commercially prepared diets for captive cheetahs, warrants caution until further research is conducted.  相似文献

Individuals of Gammarus pulex were kept at 15°C for periods of 23–70 days on diets comprised of elm or oak leaves, Tricladium and Clavariopsis (Hyphomycete fungi), Molinia (grass), Zygogonium (alga), Nardia (liverwort). Both the mean interval between moults (mi), and daily increments in body wet weight, were related to diet. The lowest value for mi was 14·6 days on a diet of naturally decaying elm and oak leaves. The largest weight gains also occurred on this diet; the average daily gain in weight (Dw) = 130·8 μg/day, the mean specific gain in weight (Gw) = 1·69 μg %/day. On green Molinia and fungi diets Dw ranged from nil to 60·7 μg/day, and mi= 17·4–18·4 days was significantly (P<0·01) longer than mi on leaf diets. Survival and growth were poor on brown Molinia. Nardia did not support growth or survival. A mixed diet of Tricladium, Zygogonium, Nardia and decaying grasses was not sufficient to promote an increase in body weight, and mi= 21·8 days. This diet represents the commonly available food materials in Mosedale Beck, an acid stream in the upper Duddon catchment. Survival and growth of G. pulex on fungi and leaf diets in media containing low concentrations of potassium ions are also described and discussed briefly in relation to the distribution of G. pulex in the upper catchment of the R. Duddon.  相似文献

Summary

This study was conducted to examine the nutritional value of eight algal diets for two species of abalone, Haliotis tuberculata and Haliotis discus hannai, by measuring biochemical composition of the algae and relating this to feeding rate, growth and biochemical composition of the animals. Nutritional value of algal diets can be divided into three categories for each species of abalone. For H. tuberculata the best performance was on the mixed diet and Palmaria palmata intermediate was Alaria esculenta, Ulva lactuca and Laminaria digitata, and lowest growth was on Laminaria saccharina and Chondrus crispus. For H. discus hannai, best performance was on A. esculenta, P. palmata and the mixed diet; intermediate was on L. saccharina and L. digitata and lowest was on U. lactuca. It is generally accepted that high “balanced” levels of protein (>15%), lipid (3–5%) and carbohydrate (20–30%), with no detrimental substances in natural algae are essential for optimal growth performance of these abalone. The fact that A. esculenta, L. saccharina and U. lactuca had different dietary values for the two abalone species indicates specific nutritive requirements and/or digestive physiology. Overall, H. tuberculata grew faster, had higher food conversion efficiencies and muscle yield than H. discus hannai. Generally abalone fed on the highest category diets, had higher muscle yields and levels of protein, visceral lipids and muscle carbohydrate. Viscera and foot muscle are reservoirs for lipid and carbohydrate, respectively. The effect of algal diet on sexual maturation is similar to that on somatic growth.  相似文献

Summary The average respiratory quotient of weasels was 0.73. There were significant differences in average daily metabolic rate (ADMR) between the sexes and six experimental temperatures. As temperature decreased the mean ADMR increased, with a relatively greater rise for females. Regression equations of ADMR on temperature were Y=483.2–9.6X kcal/kg/day for males, and Y=625.3–15.0X kcal/kg/day for females. The minimum metabolic rate measured for males was 6.6 kcal/kg/h, and the maximum 25.7 kcal/kg/h. The relationship between ADMR and body weight varied with different temperatures, but was consistent with the hypothesis that ADMR was proportional to metabolic weight. The energetic costs of activity for my captive weasels were more than 20% of their daily total energy expenditure. Data on metabolism supported the conclusion that long, thin mustelids lose heat faster than normally-shaped mammals of the same weight. The calorific contents of foods, faeces and urine from feeding trials were determined. There were significant differences in the calorific content of faeces between the sexes, and of faeces and urine between diets.Four natural foods (Microtus, Apodemus, rabbit, starling) were offered during feeding trials. Daily food consumption varied between the diets, but small weasels always ate relatively more than large ones. Mean consumption was 0.33 g/g/day for males, and 0.36 g/g/day for females. Weasels on low-bulk diets (rabbit, starling) lost at least as much energy in urine as in faeces. There were significant differences in assimilation efficiency between the sexes and diets. The average efficiency for males was 78.2%, and 79.8% for females. Bulky foods lowered assimilation efficiencies by up to 9%.Daily energy requirements for maintenance calculated from ADMR data were compared with those from feeding trials. On the Microtus diet weasels expended 18.6–30.1% more energy on maintenance than predicted by the ADMR results, whereas on the other diets they expended 2.7–31.4% less energy. Estimates from ADMR data were probably more accurate.  相似文献

The aim of the present experiment was to determine if a niacin supplementation of 6 g/d to lactating dairy cow diets can compensate negative effects of a rumen nitrogen balance (RNB) deficit. A total of nine ruminally and duodenally fistulated lactating multiparous German Holstein cows were successively assigned to one of three diets consisting of 10 kg maize silage (dry matter [DM] basis) and 7 kg DM concentrate: Diet RNB- (n = 6) with energy and utilisable crude protein at the duodenum (uCP) according to the average requirement of the animals but with a negative RNB (-0.41 g N/MJ metabolisable energy [ME]); Diet RNB0 (n = 7) with energy, uCP and a RNB (0.08 g N/MJ ME) according to the average requirement of the animals and, finally, Diet NA (n = 5), which was the same diet as RNB-, but supplemented with 6 g niacin/d. Samples of milk were taken on two consecutive days, blood samples were taken on one day pre- and post-feeding and faeces and urine were collected completely over five consecutive days. The negative RNB reduced milk and blood urea content and apparent total tract digestibility of DM, organic matter (OM) and neutral detergent fibre (NDF). Also N excretion with urine, the total N excreted with urine and faeces and the N balance were reduced when the RNB was negative. Supplementation of niacin elevated plasma glucose concentration after feeding and the N balance increased. Supplementing the diet with a negative RNB with niacin led to a more efficient use of dietary N thereby avoiding the negative effects of the negative RNB on the digestibility of DM, OM and NDF.  相似文献
