BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The genus Salvia has traditionally included any member of the tribe Mentheae (Lamiaceae) with only two stamens and with each stamen expressing an elongate connective. The recent demonstration of the non-monophyly of the genus presents interesting implications for staminal evolution in the tribe Mentheae. In the context of a molecular phylogeny, the staminal morphology of the various lineages of Salvia and related genera is characterized and an evolutionary interpretation of staminal variation within the tribe Mentheae is presented. METHODS: Two molecular analyses are presented in order to investigate phylogenetic relationships in the tribe Mentheae and the genus Salvia. The first presents a tribal survey of the Mentheae and the second concentrates on Salvia and related genera. Schematic sketches are presented for the staminal morphology of each major lineage of Salvia and related genera. KEY RESULTS: These analyses suggest an independent origin of the staminal elongate connective on at least three different occasions within the tribe Mentheae, each time with a distinct morphology. Each independent origin of the lever mechanism shows a similar progression of staminal change from slight elongation of the connective tissue separating two fertile thecae to abortion of the posterior thecae and fusion of adjacent posterior thecae. A monophyletic lineage within the Mentheae is characterized consisting of the genera Lepechinia, Melissa, Salvia, Dorystaechas, Meriandra, Zhumeria, Perovskia and Rosmarinus. CONCLUSIONS: Based on these results the following are characterized: (1) the independent origin of the staminal lever mechanism on at least three different occasions in Salvia, (2) that Salvia is clearly polyphyletic, with five other genera intercalated within it, and (3) staminal evolution has proceeded in different ways in each of the three lineages of Salvia but has resulted in remarkably similar staminal morphologies.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND: AIMS Bird-pollinated (ornithophilous) Salvia species (sages) transfer pollen either by means of a staminal lever mechanism or by immovable stamens. As the distribution of the two modes within the genus is not known, we present a survey of all ornithophilous sages. The main focus is given to floral diversity especially with respect to functional lever morphology. Thereby the hypothesis is tested that, due to a pollinator shift from bees to birds, the lever mechanism became unnecessary. METHODS: To get a general idea about the diversity of pollen transfer mechanisms, 186 ornithophilous Salvia species were classified according to the functional morphology of the stamen and the need for a lever movement. To test the functionality of the staminal levers and the fitting between flowers and birds the process of pollen transfer was examined by pollinator observations and tested by inserting museum skins and metal rods into fresh flowers. KEY RESULTS: The diversity of pollen transfer mechanisms is represented by eight case studies illustrating three main groups. In group I (approx. 50 %) the staminal lever mechanism is necessary to open access to nectar and to enable the transfer of pollen that is hidden in the upper lip. In group II (approx. 34 %) pollen is freely accessible and the lever mechanism is reduced in different ways and to different degrees. In group III (approx. 4 %) the lever works as in group I, but pollen is freely accessible as in II. The remaining approx. 13 % are not clearly classified. CONCLUSIONS: It is considered that the driving force behind the diverse modes of reduction is the necessity to increase the distance between nectar and pollen, thereby ensuring pollen deposition on the bird's feathered head. This is achieved several times in parallel by corolla elongation and/or exposure of the pollen-sacs. As soon as pollen is freely accessible, the lever movement loses its significance for pollination.  相似文献

The staminal lever mechanism of pollination in Salvia has been considered as a key innovation, which was proposed to contribute to adaptive radiation of the genus. Considering its sophisticated interaction with pollinators, we hypothesized that relevant floral traits in the lever mechanism might be subject to intense selection in natural populations. In the present study, Salvia digitaloides was employed to investigate phenotypic selection on the floral traits. The results indicated that there were large variations in the floral structural traits and spatial position of the stigma. No significant selection was detected on the plausible key trait, i.e. the stamen lever length. Strong stabilizing selection acted consistently on the size of corolla entrance; that is, the intermediate corolla entrance was at a selective advantage. Both corolla length and style exsertion were subject to opposite directional selection in both years; and corolla entrance height was subject to disruptive selection, which was attributed to divergent adaptation of the trait to different body-sized pollinators. Furthermore, correlational selection acted on a few pairs of traits which described corolla entrance size and stigma position. Flower production was consistently subject to significantly positive directional selection in both years. In conclusion, it was most likely that floral traits involved in the staminal lever mechanism evolved in a functionally integrated manner for the enhancement of pollination efficiency in the natural population of S. digitaloides.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The functional morphology of Salvia pratensis flowers was re-investigated, after new insights revealed that pollen dispensing is one of the main functions of the staminal lever. In particular, no detailed information was available regarding the process of pollen transfer and the forces arising between the pollen-bearing thecae and the pollinating bee's body. The assumption was made that these forces play a significant role in pollen dispensing. METHODS: The functional morphology of S. pratensis flowers and the interaction between flowers and bees (Apis mellifera) were studied by reconstructing stress and strains by using qualitative and semi-quantitative theoretical analysis. Flowers were manipulated to study the spatial arrangement of the filament and lever, and of the head and proboscis of the visiting bee inside the tube. Photographs and films of bee visits on flowers were used to analyse the interaction of pollinator and staminal lever. KEY RESULTS: The spoon-shaped lower lever of S. pratensis has a small hole through which a bee introduces its proboscis into the corolla tube. Although mentioned for the first time by Kerner von Marilaun in 1891, presented here is the first drawing and the first photograph showing this interaction in detail. The analysis of the interaction of flower visitor and the lever mechanism revealed that the position of bees on different flowers is spatially very similar. Flower morphology constrains postures of legitimately nectar-probing bees within narrow bounds. A theoretical discussion on structural elements and force progression in the flower allows the principles of lightweight architecture in flower morphology to be recognized. CONCLUSIONS: The staminal lever of S. pratensis is a pollen-dispensing device. It seems to influence the amount of pollen deposited on pollinators by determining the forces arising between the pollinator and the pollen. The relevant forces occur either during the first, dynamic phase or during the second, almost static phase of a flower visit.  相似文献

Floral key innovations play a significant role in the discussion of adaptive radiation in plants. The paper brings together a brief review of morphological key innovations in plants, elucidating their evolutionary significance in flower–pollinator interactions, and new data on Salvia, a genus being examined as an example for presumed adaptive radiation. We hypothesize that the characteristic staminal lever mechanism functions as a key innovation. It is defined as a functional unit including the modification of stamens to lever-like structures, their reversible movement, and the organization of the remaining floral structures involved in the process of pollen transfer. We follow the assumption that structure and functioning of the staminal levers play a major role in the process of pollen deposition on the pollinator's body, and that minute changes of both their proportions and their interactions with pollinators may have significant consequences for the pollination system. The functioning of the staminal lever mechanism is tested by field investigations, biomechanical experiments and pollination simulations. First results are presented, and possible modes of allopatric and sympatric speciation are discussed, based on morphometry of Salvia flowers and pollinators as well as on the operating mode of the staminal lever mechanism. Special attention is given to species-specific patterns of pollen deposition on the pollinator's body. We assume that, depending on the precision of the lever movement, sympatric Salvia species flowering during overlapping periods and sharing the same pollinating species may be either mechanically isolated from each other or able to hybridize. The latter may result in speciation, as may spontaneous mutations influencing the flower-pollinator interaction, e.g. by significant changes in morphometry of the staminal lever system and/or other flower structures. As a consequence, Salvia individuals may deposit pollen on a different part of the pollinator's body, or even adapt to a new pollinator species, both resulting in reproductive isolation from the parental population.  相似文献

Bdallophytum americanum (Cytinaceae) is an endoparasitic plant species, meaning only the flowers emerge from the host during the reproductive season. Reports on the pollination biology of this species state that its primary pollinators are carrion flies attracted by the smell of the flowers and nectar as a reward. However, the functional role of one of the most outstanding attributes of B. americanum has been neglected. These are the staminal appendages formed by the apical overgrowth of connective tissue during anther development. To determine whether these staminal appendages play a role in pollination, we monitored a nectarless population of B. americanum. We described the inflorescence emergence, floral movements, and pollination and performed field experiments to test whether the absence of the staminal connective appendages affected the visitation frequency. Male inflorescences emerge early, and both male and female flowers open during the day and do not close. Hoverflies are the most frequent visitors to both floral sexes and carry the most pollen. Moreover, the movement of staminal appendages matching the pollen viability changes is reported for the first time. The staminal appendages are the structures where pollinators land before foraging. The field experiments showed that the visitation frequency decreased sharply without staminal appendages. As a landing platform, the staminal connective appendages in B. americanum are crucial for pollinator positioning and collecting viable pollen.

The importance of characters in the infrageneric taxonomy is discussed. Starch was cytologically localized and biochemically assayed in different anther cell layers of Lilium cv. Enchantment during pollen development and its presence was correlated with anther growth. Two phases could be distinguished: the first, the growth phase, extends from the beginning of meiosis to the vacuolated microspore stage and corresponds to maximum increase in anther size and weight. During this period, microspores lack amyloplasts and starch is degraded in the outer staminal wall layers. The tapetum does not contain starch reserves but accumulates a PAS-positive substance in its vacuole. The second phase, the maturation phase, begins with the late vacuolated microspore stage and lasts until pollen maturation. Anther growth is slowed during this phase. A wave of amylogenesis/ amylolysis occurs first in the late vacuolated-microspores and young pollen grains and, next, in the staminal envelopes. In the pollen grain, the cytoplasm of the vegetative cell is filled with starch, but amyloplasts are not detected in the generative cell. When pollen grains ripen, amylaceous reserves are replaced with lipids. In the staminal envelopes, the second amylogenesis is particularly evident in the endothecium and the middle layers; the peak of starch is reached at the young bicellular pollen grain stage; starch disappears from the anther wall early during the maturation phase. The wave of amylogenesis/amylolysis occurring in the staminal envelopes during the maturation phase is peculiar to Lilium. It is interpreted as a sudden increase in carbohydrate level caused by lower anther needs when the growth is completed. Staminal envelopes may act as a physiological buffer and regulate soluble sugar level in the anther. Stages of anther growth correlate with starch content variations and this suggests that during the growth phase, products of starch hydrolysis in the staminal envelopes may be consumed partly by anther cell layers and partly by microspores.  相似文献

Floral organs are widely believed to enhance the pollination and reproductive success of angiosperms. However, the functional implication of some floral structures is still unknown. In this study, we explored the functional role of staminal appendages on male and female reproductive success of Himalayan Roscoea spp. and tested if their function differed between species with biotic pollination and autonomous selfing. Phenotypic manipulation is a powerful approach to test the functional effect of a particular trait on plant fitness. We compared various proxies of pollination success between intact flowers and flowers with manually excised staminal appendages. We found that the rate of visitation did not differ between intact and manipulated flowers. Our results revealed that in outcrossing Roscoea spp., the staminal appendages act as triggering devices to facilitate pollen release and deposition and also to manipulate the foraging position of pollinators to ensure both male and female reproductive success. In contrast, in autonomously selfing Roscoea spp., the removal of staminal appendages did not affect any aspect of pollination processes. Our results suggest that the staminal appendages are an integral component of outcrossing in Roscoea spp. and are maintained by selection pressure through both male and female reproductive success. This study provides important insights on how variation in breeding systems can provoke changes in the structure and function of floral organs among congeners.  相似文献

Results of light and electron microscopy and preliminary ultracytochemical studies of the staminal hairs of Bulbine inflata at different stages of development are reported here. The staminal filaments are covered with yellow, unicellular, linear, erecto-patent hairs. These staminal hairs arise directly as single cell outgrowths from epidermal cells of the filament. The surface of each hair is patterned with helical wall thickenings in an anticlockwise direction. This wall is covered by a thick folded cuticle, and formed of a loosely fibrillar cellulose layer. The hair cell possesses a cytoplasm rich in organelles. Especially ribosomes are abundant. Plastids contain large starch grains and peripheral lipid droplets. The smooth endoplasmic reticulum cisternae (SER) encircle the plastids and mitochondria; it is extended in the cytoplasm along the hair length. These hairs have functions in flower pollination attracting pollinators visually, secreting specific substances, providing increased surface area, protecting the filaments and being involved in their movement and vibration.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Flower morphology and inflorescence architecture affect pollinator foraging behaviour and thereby influence the process of pollination and the reproductive success of plants. This study explored possible ecological functions of the lever-like stamens and the floral design in Salvia cyclostegia.

Methods

Flower construction was experimentally manipulated by removing either the lower lever arms or the upper fertile thecae of the two stamens from a flower. The two types of manipulated individuals were intermixed with the control ones and randomly distributed in the population.

Key Results

Removing the sterile lower lever arms significantly reduced handling time per flower of the main pollinator, Bombus personatus. Interestingly, this manipulation did not increase the number of flowers probed per plant visit, but instead reduced it, i.e. shortened the visit sequence of the bumble-bees. Both loss of staminal lever function by removing lower lever arms and exclusion of self pollen by removing upper fertile thecae significantly reduced seed set per flower and seed set per plant. Both the manipulations interacted significantly with inflorescence size for the effect on female reproductive output.

Conclusions

Though the intact flowers demand a long handling time for pollinators, the reversible staminal lever is of advantage by promoting dispersal of pollen and thus the male function. The particular floral design in S. cyclostegia contributes to the floral constancy of B. personatus bumble-bees, with the lower lever arms acting as an optical cue for foraging cognition.  相似文献

The floral anatomy ofCamellia japonica is described and the origin of its multistaminate androecium is considered. Of significance is the observation that the complex polyandry of the genus overlies a basic vascular obdiplostemonous pattern. This is evidenced by two systems of staminal bundles. The first diverges from a set of five common petal-stamen bundles and subsequently divides further. The second set of five staminal trunk bundles emerges from the central cylinder slightly above the petal-stamen bundles which are antepetalous. The observations will aid phylogenetic reconstruction for members of the polyphyletic order Dilleniidae to whichCamellia belongs, and in which the polyandry has been too simply and sometimes incorrectly interpreted as a primitive condition.  相似文献

Plication of staminal filaments is an important diagnostic character for Tillandsia subgenus Anoplophytum (ca. 45 species). The monophyletic integrity of subgenus Anoplophytum has recently been questioned, and we conducted an anatomical investigation of plicate staminal filaments to better characterize this putative synapomorphy. Developmental studies show that the filament plications, or folds, become visible during or soon after anthesis. Serial sections of preplication filaments and filaments in sequential stages of plication were prepared and observed with light microscopy. A uniform sequence of parenchyma cell collapse begins three to four cell layers out from the vascular bundle and proceeds centrifugally to the epidermis. Eventually the epidermal cells collapse, leaving only the vascular bundle and a few surrounding parenchyma cells intact. Above and below the zone of plication, all parenchyma and epidermal cells in the filament remain intact. Species traditionally placed in subgenera Tillandsia and Allardtia have been found with plicate staminal filaments that are anatomically and develop-mentally identical to those studied from subgenus Anoplophytum. Alone, staminal filament plication does not appear to be a good diagnostic character for subgenus Anoplophytum, and doubts concerning the monophylesis of this subgenus are reinforced. The functional significance of stamen filament plication remains unknown.  相似文献

Structural changes of plasmodesmata occurred in along with growth, development and senescence of staminal hair cells of Setcreasea purpurea. The plasmodesmata in the staminal hair cells of buds and open flowers were normal having a diameter of 50 mm. Those of senescent flowers became enlarged and underwent modification, such as the appressed endoplasmic reticulum disintegrated and the cell wall around the plasmodesmata degraded, so that it formed a channel with such as a diameter of 100 nm, twice or threefold as that of normal plasmodesmata. Glyphosate is noted for being non-toxic in fishes, birds and mammals (including humans). Nevertheless, the degree of genotoxicity is seriously controversial. In this work, various concentrations of a glyphosate isopropylamine salt were tested using two methods of genotoxicity assaying, viz., the pink mutation assay with Tradescantia (4430) and the comet assay with nuclei from staminal cells of the same plant. Staminal nuclei were studied in two different forms, namely nuclei from exposed plants, and nuclei exposed directly. Using the pink mutation assay, isopropylamine induced a total or partial loss of color in staminal cells, a fundamental criterion utilized in this test. Consequently, its use is not recommended when studying genotoxicity with agents that produce pallid staminal cells. The comet assay system detected statistically significant (p < 0.01) genotoxic activity by isopropylamine, when compared to the negative control in both the nuclei of treated plants and directly treated nuclei, but only the treated nuclei showed a dose-dependent increase. Average migration in the nuclei of treated plants increased, when compared to that in treated nuclei. This was probably due, either to the permanence of isopropylamine in inflorescences, or to the presence of secondary metabolites. In conclusion, isopropylamine possesses strong genotoxic activity, but its detection can vary depending on the test systems used.  相似文献

Salvia, with over 900 species from both the Old and New World, is the largest genus in the Lamiaceae. Unlike most members of the subfamily Nepetoideae to which it belongs, only two stamens are expressed in Salvia. Although the structure of these stamens is remarkably variable across the genus, generally each stamen has an elongate connective and divergent anther thecae, which form a lever mechanism important in pollination. In a preliminary investigation of infrageneric relationships within Salvia, the monophyly of the genus and its relationship to other members of the tribe Mentheae were investigated using the chloroplast DNA regions rbcL and trnL-F. Significant conclusions drawn from the data include: Salvia is not monophyletic, Rosmarinus and Perovskia together are sister to an Old World clade of Salvia, the section Audibertia is sister to subgenus Calosphace or the monotypic Asian genus Dorystaechas, and the New World members of section Heterosphace are sister to section Salviastrum. Owing to the non-monophyly of Salvia, relationships at the next clearly monophyletic level, tribe Mentheae, were investigated.  相似文献

Summary Investigations into plant intercellular communication were initiated through an examination of plasmodesmata and cell-to-cell passage of molecular probes in the staminal hairs ofSetcreasea purpurea. Plasmodesmata connecting staminal hair cells of small buds are filled with an electron-opaque homogenous material. To examine the permeation selectivity of plasmodesmata, molecular probes made up of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) complexed with amino acids and peptides were injected into the staminal hair cells and the spread of these fluorescent molecules through the symplast, was monitored. Molecules composed of FITC complexed to single amino acids with polar and aliphatic R groups travel rapidly, while those which include peptides travel slowly. Dye molecules composed of an amino acid with an aromatic side group do not pass from cell to cell at all. It is hypothesized that the material occluding the plasmodesmata constitutes the diffusion barrier, by presenting a hydrophilic environment which allows passage of molecules with maximum molecular weights of 700–800 daltons, but which retains those with aromatic side groups.  相似文献

Siphocampylus is a neotropical genus that comprises 221 species distributed from Costa Rica to Argentina and in the Greater Antilles. Twenty-eight species have been reported from Brazil, mainly occupying mountainous terrain. The floral venation patterns and the origin of the hypanthium in eight Brazilian species, including three varieties, are described. Eleven ovarian vascular bundles depart from the siphonostele or receptacular stele: five of these bundles result from sepalar and staminal adnation and are alternate to five petalar bundles; the remaining bundle is central carpellary. The staminal bundles diverge from the sepalar bundles at the sinus, while the carpellary bundles form a cross, resulting in four ventral bundles; two of these feed the ovules; the other two feed the style. Apparently, the dorsal carpellary bundles diverge at the same site and then ramify profusely. The venation pattern observed is unprecedented in Siphocampylus and is quite different from other reports on genera of Campanulaceae. Further, these findings suggest that the origin of the hypanthium is appendicular, increasing knowledge of venation in this group, thus providing data for phylogenetic considerations.  相似文献
