In his mathematical treatment of Fisher's ideas on sexual selection (so-called runaway selection) Lande (1981) predicted that males may evolve increasingly elaborate sexual characters despite opposing viability selection as a consequence of the associated costs. Lande thereby assumed that female mate preferences are not subject to selection since (1) females are all inseminated and (2) the quantity and quality of their offspring are independent of the female's mate preferences. Kirkpatrick (1985) removed the latter assumption and investigated the consequences for the mean phenotype with respect to both female and male traits. He also explored the dynamics of the (co)-variance matrix by numerical methods. In this paper we consider a simpler model with just two multi-allelic loci. This enables us to derive explicit expressions for (co)-variances under steady state conditions. Rather than assume natural selection through differential fertility (as in Kirkpatrick, 1985), we take sexual selection on females into account by modelling the preference-dependent risk that females remain unmated. We argue that this wallflower effect is a realistic feature of any mating system, since it merely depends on the existence of (1) variation in mating preferences and (2) a finite mating season. Our approach provided an insight into the dynamic behaviour of the means of the phenotypes. This is because the dynamics of the means depend on the steady state (co)-variance matrix. Thus, an insight into the former requires explicit expressions for the latter. Whereas Lande and Kirkpatrick predicted runaway processes, despite opposing viability selection, our model predicts a globally stable steady state, i.e. no runaway, even without opposing viability selection (under the assumption of an asymptotically stable steady state of the (co)-variances. Admittedly, we have no analytic proof of this stability but only support for it, based on simulations.) The absence of the runaway processes in our model is caused by the wallflower effect, since it imposes constraints on the steady state of the (co)-variance matrix. When mutational input applies to female traits but not to male traits, explicit expressions for the (co)-variances under steady state conditions can be derived, and these show that: (1) both the genetic covariance and the variance of male traits are equal to zero, but (2) the variance of the female trait exceeds to zero. Should there be mutational input influencing the male trait, then these results would suggest that the male-to-female ratio of variances is much smaller than unity. This prediction is of tremendous importance for speciation through founding events.  相似文献

Objectives: To evaluate the typical appearance of natural anterior teeth in young and elderly people and to develop guidelines for the natural appearance of dentures. Design: Clinical examination and photography. Inclusion criteria were a dental state with natural anterior teeth and no more than two crowns. Subjects: A study group (SG) consisting of 64 patients ranging in age from 60 to 86 years (67.3 ± 5.8) and a control group (CG) composed of 64 dental students aged 21–33 years (25.8 ± 2.4). Setting: Dental schools of the Johannes‐Gutenberg‐University Mainz and the University of Leipzig. Results: Most participants were content with the appearance of their own natural teeth. With relaxed lips a mean of 1.5 (±0.19) mm of upper incisors and 1.6 (±0.19) mm of lower incisors were visible in the SG compared with 2.5 (±0.16) and 0.4 (±0.07) mm in the CG, respectively. The subjects in the SG showed a greater diversity in position of teeth in the anterior arch and this was more often with incisors than with canines. Features such as stains, cracks and defects were much more noticeable in the SG. An inter‐dental ‘black triangle’ seemed to be a typical feature of an aged dental appearance. Conclusion: The majority of people older than 60 years who still have their own natural anterior teeth would not wish for a change in appearance if they needed a prosthodontic reconstruction. Thus techniques for customisation should be promoted to obtain a natural appearance in dentures.  相似文献

The origin of new genes: glimpses from the young and old   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Genome data have revealed great variation in the numbers of genes in different organisms, which indicates that there is a fundamental process of genome evolution: the origin of new genes. However, there has been little opportunity to explore how genes with new functions originate and evolve. The study of ancient genes has highlighted the antiquity and general importance of some mechanisms of gene origination, and recent observations of young genes at early stages in their evolution have unveiled unexpected molecular and evolutionary processes.  相似文献

The statistical treatment of discrete traits can be improved as indicated in the text. Reinterpretation of a recent study gives suggestive evidence for age changes in almost half the traits used.  相似文献

The karyotype of Drosophila nasutoides reveals a very large autosome pair at the metaphase plate. The application of the C-banding technique shows that this chromosome is almost entirely heterochromatic and an isochromosome (Cordeiro et al., 1975). Examination of the DNA isolated from purified nuclei of D. nasutoides in neutral CsCl gradients reveals four major satellites. As much as 60% of the total DNA appears as satellites in the DNA from larval brains. The buoyant densities of the four satellites, designated as I through IV in the order of descending density, are 1.687, 1.682, 1.669 and 1.665 g/cm3, respectively. All four satellites show strand separations in alkaline CsCl gradients with the least separation in satellite III. Thermal denaturation studies with purified native satellites show that satellites I and IV consist of repeats of identical sequences, whereas satellites II and III show a large sequence variation between repeating units. As much as 10 to 24% base-pair mis-matching is observed in the reassociated satellite II. The sequence complexities obtained from DNA reassociation kinetics data are 5, 103, 2.3 × 106 and 46 nucleotide pairs for the satellites I, II, III and IV, respectively. The complexity of satellite III is almost as large as that of Escherichia coli, when the reassociation rate is corrected according to the amount of mis-matching in this satellite. All four satellite sequences are localized in one chromosome (dot chromosome) according to in situ hybridizations to polytene chromosomes. The large heterochromatic chromosome seen at the metaphase plate appears as the dot chromosome after polytenization. Therefore, the large heterochromatic chromosome contains all four satellite DNA components.  相似文献

Conclusion If we arrange in chronological order the various statements Darwin made about God, creation, design, plan, law, and so forth, that I have discussed, there emerges a picture of a consistent development in Darwin's religious views from the orthodoxy of his youth to the agnosticism of his later years. Numerous sources attest that at the beginning of the Beagle voyage Darwin was more or less orthodox in religion and science alike.78 After he became a transmutationist early in 1837, he concluded that the doctrine of secondary causes must be extented even to the history of life and that after the first forms of life were created, there was no further need for divine intervention, except where man was concerned. Man's body, he thought, was produced by the process of transmutation, but he believed for a time that man's soul was superadded. By mid-1838 he had become convinced that nothing, after the creation of life, was due to miracles. God works only through laws, which are capable of producing every effect of evey kind which surrounds us. The existence of man, the idea of God in man's mind, and the harmony of the whole system were in his eyes prearranged goals of deterministic laws imposed by God. Such a conception excludes the miracles on which Christianity depends; but it is not possible to say whether Darwin's loss of Christian faith, which occurred at about this same time, preceded and made possible his materialism or was rather caused or hastened by it.79 In the weeks after his reading of Malthus, Darwin's belief in a plan of creation gave way to the belief that God created matter and life and designed their laws, leaving the details, however, to the workings of chance. This remained his view until the 1860s.There is no exact parallel between this development of Darwin's religious views and the development of his ideas on evolution, but there is a general correspondence. When he believed in a plan of creation, Darwin's theory of transmutation did not depend on struggle or the selection of chance variations. Adaptation was, for him, an automatic response to environmental chance. From late 1838 to 1859 he believed in designed laws and chance, and this belief, too, has its parallel in his theory. The element of chance in natural selection meant that there could be no detailed plan,in which even man's idea of God would be a necessary outcome of nature's laws (man himself is not a necessary outcome of the working of natural selection).80 But Darwin still believed nature was programmed to achieve certain general ends. We might say that he believed in a general, though not a special, teleology. Natural selection was for him a law to maximize utility, creating useful organs, retaining vestiges for future use. For many years it was a law designed to produce organisms perfectly adapted to their environments. Only later did Darwin come to doubt even this sort of design in nature.81 One way of describing the development of Darwin's evolutionary thought is to say that it shows a gradual abandoning of his theistic assumptions, so that by the late 1860s his theory was informed to a slighter extent by notions of purpose and design than it was in 1838 or 1844 or 1859.  相似文献

The catalytic activity of liver fructose-biphosphate aldolase (EC 4.1.2.13) of young and old rats in units per manomole sequence has been calculated. No evidence of the accumulation with age of altered enzyme molecules of low catalytic activity was obtained. This is contrary to results obtained using mice and rabbits and indicates that the accumulation of altered enzymes may not always be associated with aging. The possibility that altered proteins are formed, but do not accumulate, cannot be ruled out.  相似文献

Japanese camellia (Camellia japonica) and its seed predator, the camellia weevil (Curculio camelliae), provide a notable example of a geographic mosaic of coevolution. In the species interaction, the offensive trait of the weevil (rostrum length) and the defensive trait of the plant (pericarp thickness) are involved in a geographically-structured arms race, and these traits and selective pressures acting on the plant defence vary greatly across a geographical landscape. To further explore the geographical structure of this interspecific interaction, we tested whether the geographical variation in the weevil rostrum over an 800-km range along latitude is attributed to local natural selection or constrained by historical (phylogeographical) events of local populations. Phylogeographical analyses of the mitochondrial DNA sequences of the camellia weevil revealed that this species has experienced differentiation into two regions, with a population bottleneck and subsequent range and/or population expansion within each region. Although these phylogeographical factors have affected the variation in rostrum length, analyses of competing factors for the geographical variation revealed that this pattern is primarily determined by the defensive trait of the host plant rather than by the effects of historical events of populations and a climatic factor (annual mean temperature). Thus, our study suggests the overwhelming strength of coevolutionary selection against the effect of historical events, which may have limited local adaptation.  相似文献

A new index for the intensity of natural selection is proposed. This index is designed to measure the strength of the selection process itself rather than the effect of the process operating on a particular population for a particular period of time. However a new index for the effect of selection is also proposed. The indices can be used when the population being acted on is divided into classes with all the individuals in a class having the same susceptibility to the selection process. The fitting of susceptibility functions is discussed for cases where the division into classes is based upon the values of a quantitative variable.  相似文献

Proponents of the standard evolutionary biology paradigm explain human “altruism” in terms of either nepotism or strict reciprocity. On that basis our underlying nature is reduced to a function of inclusive fitness: human nature has to be totally selfish or nepotistic. Proposed here are three possible paths to giving costly aid to nonrelatives, paths that are controversial because they involve assumed pleiotropic effects or group selection. One path is pleiotropic subsidies that help to extend nepotistic helping behavior from close family to nonrelatives. Another is “warfare”—if and only if warfare recurred in the Paleolithic. The third and most plausible hypothesis is based on the morally based egalitarian syndrome of prehistoric hunter-gatherers, which reduced phenotypic variation at the within-group level, increased it at the between-group level, and drastically curtailed the advantages of free riders. In an analysis consistent with the fundamental tenets of evolutionary biology, these three paths are evaluated as explanations for the evolutionary development of a rather complicated human social nature. This paper (in a series of drafts) has profited from comments by Michael Boehm, Donald T. Campbell, Bruce Knauft, Jane Lancaster, Martin Muller, Peter J. Richerson, Gary Seaman, Craig Stanford, George Williams, Edward O. Wilson, David Sloan Wilson, and two reviewers for Human Nature. Christopher Boehm is a professor of anthropology and the director of the Jane Goodall Research Center, University of Southern California. His research interests in political anthropology concern egalitarianism, feuding, warfare, and conflict resolution (humans and chimpanzees). In biosocial anthropology he is interested in altruism, group selection, and decisions.  相似文献

The operation of clonal selection for cells of the B-lymphocyte line is discussed with regard to: 1) The clonal repertoire determined by antigen binding to B lymphocytes, which is much larger than that determined by limiting dilution cloning assays. This quantitative difference is interpreted in terms of the multiple shared specificities of each antibody molecule. 2) Multiclonal responses and initial selection by antigen of particular clones (preferential primary selection). 3) Clonal dominance. During an immune response one clone (or a small number of clones) of B cells is preferentially selected and proliferated, apparently at random, from a heterogeneous population of cells capable of responding to the given antigen. Co-dominance of two or more clones simultaneously can be obtained by mixing selected clones. Secreted antibody is seen as playing a role in the establishment of clonal dominance. A model for clonal expansion is presented. The model attempts to explain the generation of memory and antibody secreting cells within each clonal expansion in terms of the ratio of two signals, one for proliferation and one for differentiation. The delivery of these signals is proposed to involve the receptor antibody-antigen interaction for proliferation and a self-recognition site interaction for differentiation.  相似文献

An influential argument due to Elliott Sober, subsequently strengthened by Denis Walsh and Joel Pust, moves from plausible premises to the bold conclusion that natural selection cannot explain the traits of individual organisms. If the argument were sound, the explanatory scope of selection would depend, surprisingly, on metaphysical considerations concerning origin essentialism. I show that the Sober-Walsh-Pust argument rests on a flawed counterfactual criterion for explanatory relevance. I further show that a more defensible criterion for explanatory relevance recently proposed by Michael Strevens lends support to the view that natural selection can be relevant to the explanation of individual traits.  相似文献

R. A. Fisher's Fundamental Theorem of Natural Selection states that the rate of increase in the mean fitness of a population ascribable to gene-frequency changes is exactly equal to the additive genetic variance in fitness. It has been widely misunderstood, though clarification has gradually come about particularly through the work of G. R. Price, W. J. Ewens, and S. Lessard. Building on their interpretations we here explain the approach adopted by Fisher (1941), devising a figure as an aid to understanding this important paper.  相似文献

Triosephosphate isomerase (EC 5.3.1.1) has been purified from young and old Tubatrix aceti. The enzyme shows a sharply lower specific activity in homogenates from old nematodes compared to similar preparations from young animals. However, when the enzyme activity of the respective homogenates was adjusted to the same level, equal amounts of antiserum (prepared to pure “young” triosephosphate isomerase) were required to remove the activity. Therefore, the lower specific activity observed in “old” homogenates was due to the presence of less enzyme and not to “altered” enzyme. The same results were obtained by immunotitrations of pure preparations of “young” and “old” enzyme. Moreover, in contrast to results reported for other enzymes, the specific activity of “old” triosephosphate isomerase, during purification, rose to the same value as that of pure “young” enzyme. The evidence indicates that altered triosephosphate isomerase does not exist in old T. aceti. The above results contradict the idea of an “error theory” in which all proteins would develop altered sequences. Pure triosephosphate isomerase (old or young) from T. aceti consists of two subunits, each of molecular weight 26,500. No isozymes could be detected.  相似文献
