Sexual and parental conflicts can arise because males benefit by inducing elevated reproductive effort in their mates. For females, the costs of such manipulation are often manifested later in life, and may therefore covary with female life expectancy. Here, I outline a simple female life‐history model where female life expectancy reflects extrinsic mortality rate, and elevated reproductive effort causes accelerated senescence. Using this model, I show that variation in extrinsic mortality rate can modulate the magnitude and sign of fitness effects that male manipulation has on females. This result has several interesting implications. First, it suggests that the fitness effects of sexual interactions can depend on ecological factors, such as predation, that influence life expectancy. Second, if mortality risk is condition‐dependent but reproductive effort is not fully optimized in relation to individual condition, then sexual conflict intensity may increase with individual condition, selecting for condition‐dependent reproductive strategies. Third, if males vary in manipulativeness, then the fitness effects of mating with a given male phenotype may depend on both female condition and extrinsic mortality rate. Fourth, life span extension in the laboratory can lead to overestimation of sexual and parental conflicts. Life expectancy may therefore be a key factor in sexual coevolution.  相似文献

Exercise during adolescence, especially during the pre-pubertal years, builds a skeleton with a high bone mineral density (BMD) and possibly a larger skeleton with a different skeletal architecture. This would lead to a stronger skeleton more resistant to trauma. These changes could be of biological significance for fracture reduction, if they were maintained into old age where fragility fractures exponentially rise. The Achilles heel of exercise is its cessation. Most BMD benefits achieved by exercise appear to be eroded with cessation of exercise. Reduced exercise intensity after a period of high activity, may maintain some residual BMD benefits into old age. A decreased fracture rate in the population could perhaps be achieved by promoting a physically active life style with lifelong high activity. But what happens if the activity in former athletes is reduced to the same level as in individuals who never exercised? The null hypothesis that exercise has no effect on fracture rates in old age cannot be rejected on the basis of any published, randomised, prospective data. Instead we have to rely on retrospective observational and case control studies, all hypothesis-generating, not hypothesis-testing. Existing data suggest that there could be a reduced fracture risk in former athletes. This notion may be correct, but consistently replicated sampling bias may produce the same observation and any biological explanation for this fracture reduction is unclear. Residual structural skeletal benefits, improved muscle strength, coordination and balance are all traits possibly maintained in former athletes after their active career. These traits may possibly reduce the number of fractures in later life.  相似文献

A long‐standing question in biology and economics is whether individual organisms evolve to behave as if they were striving to maximize some goal function. We here formalize this “as if” question in a patch‐structured population in which individuals obtain material payoffs from (perhaps very complex multimove) social interactions. These material payoffs determine personal fitness and, ultimately, invasion fitness. We ask whether individuals in uninvadable population states will appear to be maximizing conventional goal functions (with population‐structure coefficients exogenous to the individual's behavior), when what is really being maximized is invasion fitness at the genetic level. We reach two broad conclusions. First, no simple and general individual‐centered goal function emerges from the analysis. This stems from the fact that invasion fitness is a gene‐centered multigenerational measure of evolutionary success. Second, when selection is weak, all multigenerational effects of selection can be summarized in a neutral type‐distribution quantifying identity‐by‐descent between individuals within patches. Individuals then behave as if they were striving to maximize a weighted sum of material payoffs (own and others). At an uninvadable state it is as if individuals would freely choose their actions and play a Nash equilibrium of a game with a goal function that combines self‐interest (own material payoff), group interest (group material payoff if everyone does the same), and local rivalry (material payoff differences).  相似文献

As the relationship between a given life‐history trait and fitness is not necessarily the same for the two sexes, an ‘intersexual ontogenetic conflict’ may arise. We analysed the phenotypic reaction to intraspecific larval competition of the mosquito, Aedes aegypti, asking: (i) Do both sexes pay the cost of competition with the same life‐history traits and are they equal competitors? (ii) Is there a specific cost of competition beyond sharing food resources? We found that competition incurs a specific cost that was expressed differently by the two sexes. Indeed, each sex maintained the more important life‐history trait(s) for their fitness (developmental time for males and body weight and size for females) at the expense of other traits, thus minimizing the effects of competition on their fitness. The competition exerted by females was estimated as being more intense, probably linked with the greater importance of body size for their fitness.  相似文献

Loss of fitness due to inbreeding depression in small captive populations of endangered species is widely appreciated. Populations of all sizes may also experience loss in fitness when environmental conditions are ameliorated because deleterious alleles may be rendered neutral and accumulate rapidly. Few data exist, however, to demonstrate loss in fitness due to relaxed selection. Loss of fitness in life‐history traits were compared between LARGE (Ne ≥ 500) and SMALL (Ne = 50) populations of the housefly Musca domestica L that were subjected to curtailed life span at 21 days to remove selection on late‐acting deleterious alleles. During the early part of the life history (≤21 days), the rate of decline in fecundity and progeny production over 24 generations was greater in the small (1.5%) than in the large populations <0.2%), but rate of loss in late‐life fecundity and progeny production (>21 days) was equivalent across populations, consistent with neutral theory, and amounted to 1.7% per generation. This rate of loss due to relaxed selection was equivalent to the rate of loss due to inbreeding in populations with an effective size of 50 individuals. Even if captive populations are kept large to avoid inbreeding, breeding them in benign environments where the forces of natural selection are curtailed may jeopardize the capability of these populations to exist in natural environments within few generations. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate risk of late life coronary heart disease associated with being overweight in late middle or old age and to assess whether weight change modifies this risk. DESIGN: Longitudinal study of subjects in the epidemiological follow up study of the national health and nutrition examination survey I. SETTING: United States. SUBJECTS: 621 men and 960 women free of coronary heart disease in 1982-84 (mean age 77 years). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Incidence of coronary heart disease. RESULTS: Body mass index of 27 or more in late middle age was associated with increased risk of coronary heart disease in late life (relative risk = 1.7 (95% confidence interval 1.3 to 2.1)) while body mass index of 27 or more in old age was not (1.1 (0.8 to 1.5)). This difference in risk was due largely to weight loss between middle and old age. Exclusion of those with weight loss of 10% or more increased risk associated with heavier weight in old age (1.4 (1.0 to 1.9)). Thinner older people who lost weight and heavier people who had gained weight showed increased risk of coronary heart disease compared with thinner people with stable weight. CONCLUSIONS: Heavier weight in late middle age was a risk factor for coronary heart disease in late life. Heavier weight in old age was associated with an increased risk once those with substantial weight loss were excluded. The contribution of weight to risk of coronary heart disease in older people may be underestimated if weight history is neglected.  相似文献

There is increasing evidence that global climate change will alter the spatiotemporal occurrences and abundances of many species at continental scales. This will have implications for efficient conservation of biodiversity. We investigate if the general public in Denmark are willing to pay for the preservation of birds potentially immigrating and establishing breeding populations due to climate change to the same extent that they are for native species populations currently breeding in Denmark, but potentially emigrating due to climate change. We find that Danish citizens are willing to pay much more for the conservation of birds currently native to Denmark, than for bird species moving into the country – even when they are informed about the potential range shifts associated with climate change. The only exception is when immigrating species populations are under pressure at European level. Furthermore, people believing climate change to be man-made and people more knowledgeable about birds tended to have higher WTP for conservation of native species, relative to other people, whereas their preferences for conserving immigrant species generally resembled those of other people. Conservation investments rely heavily on public funding and hence on public support. Our results suggest that cross-country coordination of conservation efforts under climate change will be challenging in terms of achieving an appropriate balance between cost-effectiveness in adaptation and the concerns of a general public who seem mostly worried about protecting currently-native species.  相似文献

Estimates of the effects of herbivory on plant fitness based on female fitness alone may be misleading if plants experience either reduced or increased male fitness. Because there are many plants that produce more flowers following herbivory where seed set is unaffected or reduced, total fitness may be enhanced through the paternal component alone. Here we show that herbivory results in an increase in reproductive success due solely to an increase in paternal fitness in the monocarpic biennial Ipomopsis arizonica. These results suggest that overcompensation may be more common than presently thought, requiring a reexamination of the fitness consequences of herbivory for many plant species.  相似文献

An increased mortality rate is a cost of parental care, and can be high during the provisioning phase of altricial nestlings. When a parent stops feeding the nestlings temporarily after seeing a predator, it can reduce its own predation risk, but the suspension of parental care may also reduce its offspring's chances of surviving. We modelled this situation by exposing a stuffed sparrowhawk near collared flycatcher nests and removing it when both parents had seen it. We measured the time (return time) between the removal and when each parent entered the nestbox. The parents' risk taking and the return time are assumed to be inversely related. We studied which brood variables the parents take into account when deciding how much risk they are willing to take during the provisioning period. Males took more risk for older and better-quality nestlings and earlier broods. The females' behaviour was opposite to that of the males: they took significantly less risk for older and better-quality offspring and visited the nestbox later for earlier broods. The males' behaviour supported the reproductive value hypothesis, that risk taking is related to brood value and survival chances, whereas the females' behaviour supported the harm to offspring hypothesis, that risk taking is related to the broods' vulnerability. Novel adaptations often cause pleiotropic reductions in fitness. Under optimal conditions individual organisms may be able to compensate for, or reduce, these fitness costs. Declining environmental quality may therefore lead to larger costs. We investigated whether reduced plant quality would increase the fitness costs associated with resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis in two populations of the diamondback moth Plutella xylostella. We also measured the rate of decline in resistance on two host-plant (Brassica) species for one insect population (Karak). Population X plant species interactions determined the fitness costs in this study. Poor plant quality increased the fitness costs in terms of development time for both populations. However, fitness costs seen in larval survival did not always increase as plant quality declined. Both the fitness and the stability experiment indicated that fitness costs were higher on the most suitable plant for one population. Theoretically, if the fitness cost of a mutation interacts additively with environmental factors, the relative fitness of resistant insects will decrease with environmental quality. However, multiplicative costs do not necessarily increase with declining quality and may be harder to detect when fitness parameters are more subject to variation in poorer environments.  相似文献

Habitat selection by animals that migrate or disperse ultimately determines the biotic and abiotic environment they will experience in subsequent life stages. Intuitively, for habitat selection to be adaptive, animals should respond positively to cues produced by habitat characteristics that will enhance their fitness in the new environment. However, there are many examples of dispersing animals where individuals are attracted to cues produced by factors that reduce their fitness after arrival. In this study, we use a temperate reef fish to examine the relative importance of habitat-associated cues in habitat selection decisions, and assess whether use of these cues is adaptive across early life stages. We used a series of laboratory- and field-based manipulative experiments to test: (1) what habitat-associated cues are likely used to locate suitable habitat; (2) whether in situ settlement patterns reflect the cue response tested in the laboratory; and (3) whether the aspects of the habitat that stimulate settlement are the same as those that maximize survival. We observed a positive response to multiple habitat-associated cues, with conspecific cues eliciting the strongest behavioral response in laboratory choice experiments, and a strong inverse density-dependent relationship at settlement. Macroalgal cues also elicited a positive response at settlement, but were associated with higher mortality after settlement, suggesting that habitat selection decisions are not always adaptive. We argue that this non-intuitive behavior may still be adaptive if it improves fitness at an earlier life stage, as habitat selection behavior is the result of tradeoffs in fitness costs across multiple stages.  相似文献

In conspecific brood parasitism (CBP), a parasitic female takes advantage of the parental care performed by a host female by laying eggs in the nest of the host. The host female raises the offspring of the parasitic female as well as her own. In species where local females are related, direct costs for the host might be more than compensated for by gains in inclusive fitness through increased reproduction of a related parasite, but the role of relatedness in CBP is debated. This inclusive-fitness model of parasitism, structured as a game between host and parasite, suggests that both females can gain inclusive fitness and that host-parasite relatedness can therefore facilitate the evolution of CBP. Crucial assumptions are that there is kin discrimination and a potential for host resistance to parasitism by unrelated females but close relatives are accepted. The cost of parasitism in terms of reduced clutch size or offspring survival for the host must not be large; otherwise, parasitism will reduce her inclusive fitness. Therefore, if these costs are high, it does not benefit a host to accept a parasite, even if the parasite is closely related. The secondary female may still have higher fitness from parasitism, but if the costs are high, she should parasitize an unrelated host, not a relative. This requires that the reduction in parasite success that a host can cause by resistance is not too large; otherwise, it will be better for the secondary female to parasitize an accepting related host or to nest solitarily. For these reasons, host-parasite relatedness is most likely to occur in animals where costs of being parasitized are low and host resistance can markedly reduce the success of an unrelated parasite. When costs are higher, parasitism of unrelated hosts may be better, and if host resistance strongly reduces parasite success, solitary breeding is preferable. In some cases, CBP is directly advantageous for the host, and it may sometimes evolve in close connection with cooperative breeding, which is also considered in the model. Some but not all empirical results support these ideas, and more detailed studies of behavior, relatedness, and reproduction of host and parasite are needed for critical tests.  相似文献

A model of multivariate phenotypic evolution is analysed under the assumption that all characters have the same variance or at least constant ratios of variance. The rate of evolution is examined as a function of the amount of phenotypic variance in a variety of adaptive landscapes (fitness functions). It is demonstrated that the effect of variation depends on the type of adaptive landscape. In “well behaved” adaptive landscapes the rate of evolution can theoretically increase without limits, depending on the amount of heritable phenotypic variation. However, in other adaptive landscapes there are upper limits to the rate of evolution which cannot be exceeded if phenotypic variation is developmentally unconstrained, i. e. if it is the same for all characters. Further it is shown that the maximal rate of evolution becomes small if the number of characters becomes large. Fitness functions of this type are called malignant. It is argued that malignant fitness functions are more adequate models for the evolution of typical organismic systems, because they are models of functionally interdependent characters. It is concluded that there are upper limits to the rate of phenotypic evolution if the variation of functionally interdependent characters is developmentally unconstrained. The possible role of developmental constraints in adaptive phenotypic evolution is discussed.  相似文献

Jellyfish outbreaks and their consequences appear to be on the increase around the world, and are becoming particularly relevant in the Mediterranean. No previous studies have quantified tourism losses caused by jellyfish outbreaks. We used a stated-choice questionnaire and a Random Utility Model to estimate the amount of time respondents would be willing to add to their journey, in terms of reported extra travel time, in order to reduce the risk of encountering jellyfish blooms in the Catalan coast. The estimation results indicated that the respondents were willing to spend on average an additional 23.8% of their travel time to enjoy beach recreation in areas with a lower risk of jellyfish blooms. Using as a reference the opportunity cost of time, we found that the subsample of individuals who made a trade-off between the disutility generated by travelling longer in order to lower the risk of jellyfish blooms, and the utility gained from reducing this risk, are willing to pay on average €3.20 per beach visit. This estimate, combined with the respondents’ mean income, yielded annual economic gains associated with reduction of jellyfish blooms on the Catalan coast around €422.57 million, or about 11.95% of the tourism expenditures in 2012. From a policy-making perspective, this study confirms the importance of the economic impacts of jellyfish blooms and the need for mitigation strategies. In particular, providing daily information using social media applications or other technical devices may reduce these social costs. The current lack of knowledge about jellyfish suggests that providing this information to beach recreationists may be a substantially effective policy instrument for minimising the impact of jellyfish blooms.  相似文献

The paper sets out the novel shape of current Western populations as to age composition, and demonstrates that their drastic ageing has been virtually instantaneous. European populations are described as uniquely old, with no precedent whatever in human history. Moreover, all the world''s populations are undergoing the same process, including those of the developing societies, at an even faster pace. The general failure of people at large to recognize the process, and their persistent, entirely anachronistic attitudes to the older members of their societies, is described as cultural lag. The development now beginning of the so-called bean-pole family, vertical kin links between contemporary relatives stretching over four generations or more, with progressively fewer lateral linkages, is sketched out. The necessity of all persons having to live in the presence of their future selves is insisted on, with its corollary about having to pay personally in lowered subsistence levels for the doubled life span. The emergence of what is termed a third age is run over, and it is suggested that its presence might create a new civilization, one of the features of which might be the absence of enforced idleness due to unemployment.  相似文献

We compare the implications of determinate vs. indeterminate growth of a parthenogenetic iteroparous ectotherm at constant food density in the context of the dynamic energy budget theory, which specifies the tight links between life history traits, such as feeding, aging, growth and reproduction. We do a comparative analysis using, as measure of fitness, the life span reproduction, the population growth rate, and the conversion efficiency of food to biomass. When extrinsic mortality is constant, indeterminate growth cannot maximize fitness if measured by the population growth rate or the conversion efficiency, except when mortality is low, in which case both types of animals are similar. If the fitness measure is life span reproduction, indeterminate growth maximizes fitness even with constant mortality, provided it is not very high. When mortality decreases with size, indeterminate growth maximizes fitness for almost all measures of fitness. Finally, we suggest an evolutionary link between allocation strategies and expected life span. In populations of long living species, each type of animal can establish in the population of the other. In populations of short living species, determinate growers can invade, and displace, a population of indeterminate ones. However, when the mortality risk of organisms with small size is much higher than those of large size, indeterminate growers can be superior.  相似文献

The standard models of selfing in seed plants consider only the ovules, which are assumed to have a constant selfing rate. It has recently become clear, however, that hermaphrodite or monoecious populations frequently show sexual asymmetry (nonconstant pollen:ovule fertilities among individuals). Such asymmetry usually results in pollen selfing rates which differ from those for the ovules and are frequency-dependent even for constant ovule selfing rates. A recent study of selfing rates for all gametes of an individual is extended here to include four selfing rates (for ovules, pollen, all gametes, and zygotes), and simple mathematical relationships linking the four rates are obtained. Unlike earlier models of selfing, it is not assumed that the ovule selfing rate is constant, but instead that this rate, like all the others, is determined by the mobility of the pollen, which in turn is determined by the floral biology and ecology. It is found that all four selfing rates are usually frequency-dependent. The selfing rate for all gametes (the combined selfing rate) is usually intermediate between those for the ovules and pollen, and the zygotic rate is usually the smallest of the four. The exceptions to the above statements occur for relatively extreme situations, such as complete selfing for pollen or ovules, no selfing, or sexual symmetry. Three modes of selfing are considered: prior (PS), competing (CS), and delayed (DS) self-fertilization. It is shown that if there are at least two types with different selfing rates in the population, then the ranking of their selfing rates may depend upon the frequencies of the types (for the combined and the zygotic rates), may be frequency-independent (ovule rate), or may be dependent or independent, according to the mode of selfing (pollen rate). The effects of the various influences on the amount of selfing are by no means negligible. Thus a numerical study shows pollen selfing rates for one type which vary from 0.09 to 0.96, according to its frequency. Another numerical result shows a change in combined selfing rate from 0.13 to 0.86, depending solely on the mode of selfing. Results for Scots Pine show that an ovule selfing rate of 0.5 was accompanied by a combined rate of 0.143.The population selfing rate is not the same as the mean of individual selfing rates, and can only be obtained if female fitnesses as well as ovule selfing rates are known for each type.Previous models of selfing have failed to distinguish between the effects of increased selfing and increased pollen fertility, with the result that increased selfing always resulted in greater fitness. In the present models the two effects are distinguishable, and it is found that increased selfing may result in increased or decreased fitness, depending also on population density and on a form of pollen density. Thus the old dogma that in the absence of viability and fertility selection increased selfing always results in increased fitness is finally refuted, and the importance of the influence of ecological parameters on selfing and fitness is emphasized, since population density and pollen density influence the selfing rates.  相似文献

With a small effective population size, random genetic drift is more important than selection in determining the fate of new alleles. Small populations therefore accumulate deleterious mutations. Left unchecked, the effect of these fixed alleles is to reduce the reproductive capacity of a species, eventually to the point of extinction. New beneficial mutations, if fixed by selection, can restore some of this lost fitness. This paper derives the overall change in fitness due to fixation of new deleterious and beneficial alleles, as a function of the distribution of effects of new mutations and the effective population size. There is a critical effective size below which a population will on average decline in fitness, but above which beneficial mutations allow the population to persist. With reasonable estimates of the relevant parameters, this critical effective size is likely to be a few hundred. Furthermore, sexual selection can act to reduce the fixation probability of deleterious new mutations and increase the probability of fixing new beneficial mutations. Sexual selection can therefore reduce the risk of extinction of small populations.  相似文献

This article develops a simple evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS) model of resource allocation in partially selfing plants, which incorporates reproductive and sex allocation into a single framework. The analysis shows that, if female fitness gain increases linearly with resource investment, total reproductive allocation is not affected by sex allocation, defined as the fraction of reproductive resources allocated to male function. All else being equal, the ESS total reproductive allocation increases with increasing selfing rate if the fitness of selfed progeny is more than half that of outcrossed progeny, while the ESS sex allocation is always a decreasing function of the selfing rate. Self-fertilization is much more common in annual than in perennial plants, and this association has been commonly interpreted in terms of an effect of life history on mating system. The model in this article shows that self-fertilization can itself cause the evolution of the annual habit. Incorporating the effects of pollen discounting may not have any influence on total reproductive allocation if female fitness gain is a linear function of resource investment, although the evolutionarily stable sex allocation is altered. Evolution of the selfing rate is found to be independent of reproductive and sex allocation under the mass-action assumption that self- and outcross pollen are deposited simultaneously on receptive stigmas and compete for access to ovules.  相似文献
