Circulating patterns of luteinizing hormone (LH) and prolactin (PRL) were monitored for 5 yr in ewes maintained either outdoors in natural conditions or indoors in a fixed, short photoperiod (8L:16D). The ewes were ovariectomized and each was treated with a Silastic implant containing estradiol to provide a fixed negative feedback signal to the reproductive neuroendocrine axis. Serum concentrations of LH and PRL were subjected to a statistical algorithm developed for the purpose of detecting hormone cycles. In ewes maintained outdoors, serum concentrations of both hormones underwent high amplitude cycles with a period no different from 365 days. Among ewes maintained in the fixed photoperiod, unambiguous cycles of LH and PRL persisted through the 5 yr of exposure to short days. Period of these cycles differed from 365 days. Further, the LH cycles became desynchronized among ewes housed together and desynchronized with respect to the LH cycles in ewes kept outdoors. These findings document the existence of an endogenous circannual rhythm of reproductive neuroendocrine function in ewes.  相似文献

The objective of this work was to evaluate the role of short photoperiod in timing the onset and duration of reproductive activity in ewes. The perception of photoperiod was disrupted by pinealectomy following transfer from long (17L:7D) to short (8.5L:15.5D) photoperiod and the subsequent reproductive response was monitored. Ovariectomized ewes given Silastic implants containing estradiol-17 beta were exposed to long days until Day 0 (May 24) and then were allocated to the following groups (n = 5-6/group): Group 1) short-day control--moved to short days; Groups 2 to 5) pinealectomy after 0, 30, 60, or 90 short days, respectively; Group 6) long-day hold--kept on long days; Group 7) long days after 60 short days--moved to short days on Day 0 and returned to long days on Day 60. Six ewes kept outdoors served as additional controls. Reproductive neuroendocrine activity was assessed from plasma LH concentrations, high values being indicative of the breeding season and low values indicative of anestrus. Time of reproductive neuroendocrine activity onset (LH rise) did not differ among animals in the 7 groups kept indoors, but was advanced (p less than 0.05) relative to that of ewes outdoors. In contrast, duration of the LH elevation differed among ewes in groups kept indoors.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Although many species display endogenous circannual rhythms of biological activity that are synchronized by day length, the specific photoperiodic requirements for synchronizing such rhythms are not established for any species. We tested the hypothesis that the circannual reproductive rhythm of sheep can be synchronized by exposure to just one or two discrete blocks of photoperiodic information each year. Ewes were pinealectomized to prevent their ability to transduce photoperiodic information into altered reproductive neuroendocrine activity. During the 53/4 yr following pinealectomy, specific photoperiodic signals were restored for discrete periods of time via replacement of 24-h patterns of melatonin, the pineal hormone that transmits photic information to the reproductive neuroendocrine axis. The ewes were kept in a 12-mo photoycycle that alternated between short (8L:16D) and long (16L:8D) days every 6 mo and that was 6 mo out of phase with the geophysical year. Pineal-intact control ewes exhibited synchronous annual reproductive cycles. Noninfused pinealectomized control ewes did not exhibit synchronous cycles. Pinealectomized ewes infused with alternating 70-day blocks of short- and long-day patterns of melatonin every 6 mo for the first 21/2 yr of the experiment exhibited synchronous annual reproductive cycles that were 6 mo out of phase with those of ewes maintained outdoors. This synchrony persisted when the frequency of the melatonin treatment was reduced to just one 70-day block of a long-day pattern of melatonin each 365 days. Cycle period was 368 +/- 3 days; standard deviation of the date of onset of reproductive induction averaged only 3 days. Our study provides the first direct evidence that a single block of photoperiodic information a year can synchronize a circannual rhythm.  相似文献

The objective was to determine if "clamping" ewes onto a 12L:12D photoperiod resulted in expression of circannual rhythms of reproductive activity. On 24 February, 1986, two groups of 6 yearling ewes each were placed in isolated adjacent photochambers under a 12L:12D photoperiod and controlled temperature. Six control ewes were kept outdoors. Blood samples taken thrice weekly were analyzed for progesterone. Data from Days 0-1056 are reported. The mean number of cycles by control and 12L:12D ewes did not differ (32.8 +/- 1.7 vs. 29.7 +/- 4.0). The ranges were 27-39 vs. 4-51, respectively. Ten 12L:12D ewes started cycling coincidentally or later than the controls, and then cycled either regularly or irregularly throughout the study. Two of the 12L:12D ewes cycled continuously. The mean number of cycles during the period 15 April-15 August (anestrus) in Years 1, 2, and 3 were 0.7, 0.7, 0.2 for controls versus 0.3, 5.1, and 4.5 for 12L:12D ewes. The mean number of cycles during the period 15 September-15 January (breeding season) in Years 1, 2, and 3 were 7.3, 7.7, and 7.3 for controls versus 2.8, 4.8, and 4.0 for 12L:12D ewes. All controls showed distinct, alternating annual periods of anestrus and ovarian cycles whereas only two 12L:12D ewes showed a similar pattern. Estrous cycles were distributed nonrandomly in all controls and in 2 ewes exposed to 12L:12D. In the 12L:12D ewes, melatonin concentrations rose immediately after the lights-off and fell immediately after on. Lengths of the luteal phases of the cycles did not differ between groups. In summary, estrous cycles of most ewes clamped on a 12L:12D photoperiod occurred throughout the year at variable intervals rather than in distinct breeding seasons.  相似文献

The present study examines the ovulatory activity of wild and domesticated ewes subjected to either a constant photoperiod of long days (16L:8D) or natural changes in daily photoperiod for 16 mo. The aim was to determine whether an endogenous reproductive rhythm controls seasonal reproductive activity in these sheep, and how the photoperiod might affect this. The effects of long-day photoperiods on long-term changes in prolactin and melatonin secretion were also evaluated. The two species showed changes in reproductive activity under the constant photoperiod conditions, suggesting the existence of an endogenous rhythm of reproduction. This rhythm was differently expressed in the two types of ewe (P < 0.05), with the domestic animals exhibiting much greater sensitivity to the effects of long days. A circannual rhythm of plasma prolactin concentration was also seen in both species and under both photoperiod conditions, although in both species the amplitude was always lower in the long-day animals (P < 0.01). The duration of the nocturnal melatonin plasma concentrations reflected the duration of darkness in both species and treatments. The peak melatonin concentration did not differ between seasons either under natural or long-day photoperiods.  相似文献

Birds use photoperiod to control the time of breeding and moult. However, it is unclear whether responses are dependent on absolute photoperiod, the direction and rate of change in photoperiod, or if photoperiod entrains a circannual clock. If starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) are kept on a constant photoperiod of 12h light:12h darkness per day (12L:12D), then they can show repeated cycles of gonadal maturation, regression and moult, which is evidence for a circannual clock. In this study, starlings kept on constant 11.5L:12.5D for 4 years or 12.5L:11.5D for 3 years showed no circannual cycles in gonadal maturation or moult. So, if there is a circannual clock, it is overridden by a modest deviation in photoperiod from 12L:12D. The responses to 11.5L:12.5D and 12.5L:11.5D were very different, the former perceived as a short photoperiod (birds were photosensitive for most of the time) and the latter as a long photoperiod (birds remained permanently photorefractory). Starlings were then kept on a schedule which ranged from 11.5L:12.5D in mid-winter to 12.5L:11.5D in mid-summer (simulating the annual cycle at 9 degrees N) for 3 years. These birds entrained precisely to calendar time and changes in testicular size and moult were similar to those of birds under a simulated cycle at 52 degrees N. These data show that birds are very sensitive to changes in photoperiod but that they do not simply respond to absolute photoperiod nor can they rely on a circannual clock. Instead, birds appear to respond to the shape of the annual change in photoperiod. This proximate control could operate from near equatorial latitudes and would account for similar seasonal timing in individuals of a species over a wide range of latitudes.  相似文献

Two experiments were performed to determine whether the eyes are necessary for photoperiodic control of reproduction in ewes. In the first, intact and estradiol-treated ovariectomized (OVX + E) ewes were housed in each of 2 photoperiod-controlled rooms with a vasectomized ram and subjected to 90-day alternations between long and short days. Prior to blinding, long days initiated anestrus in intact ewes and a suppression of serum luteinizing hormone (LH) levels in OVX + E ewes; short days caused onset of estrous cycles and an increase in LH levels in the intact and OVX + E ewes, respectively. After 1.5 years of such photoperiodic control, all ewes were blinded by bilateral orbital enucleation. Photoperiodic control was lost following blinding, but circannual alternations between cyclicity and anestrus or high and low LH levels, were maintained in most ewes for the remaining 2.5 years of the study. In one group of OVX + E ewes, serum LH levels remained synchronized to the 90-day shifts in photoperiod for about 1 year after blinding. Once the sighted ram was removed from the room, however, the 90-day rhythm in LH disappeared and a circannual pattern of LH became evident, suggesting that blind ewes may receive photoperiodic information from a sighted ram. This possibility was supported by the results of the second experiment in which 12 additional OVX + E ewes were blinded and exposed to 90 long days and 90 short days in the absence of a sighted ram. In these ewes, serum LH levels were not controlled by the changes in photoperiod. These results are consistent with the following conclusions: 1) the eyes are necessary for perception of photoperiod in the ewe and 2) ewes have an endogenous circannual rhythm of reproduction and/or they can be controlled by other environmental signals in the absence of photoperiodic input. Further, the results lead to the hypothesis that blind ewes can receive photoperiodic information indirectly from a sighted ram.  相似文献

Seasonal variation in the plasma concentration of lutropin (LH), follitropin (FSH), prolactin (PRL), thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3) and corticosterone (B) were measured in the pigeon by RIA methods. Pigeons were maintained indoors under constant ambient temperature (Ta) and simulated natural daylight (LD), 12:12 L:D regimens or outdoors exposed to seasonal variations in temperature and photoperiod at Oulu, Finland. Only slight changes of gonadotropins (LH, FSH) were observed throughout the year, without any clear photosensitive or photorefractory period. In the indoor (natural LD) group, LH stayed elevated from May until October. Interdependence between the circannual hormonal fluctuation and photoperiod could not be shown, although the amplitude of FSH, T4 and T3 fluctuation of pigeons maintained in laboratory conditions were greater than that of natural LD and outdoor pigeons, whose circannual rhythms were similar. A high concentration of plasma PRL in autumn and the peak value of B in winter for all groups are thought to be correlated to lipid metabolism. Two peaks, the first in winter and the second in autumn, observed in T4 and T3 hormone profiles, may be due to molting of the pigeons.  相似文献

The primary objective of this study was to determine the duration of exposure to a long-day or short-day photoperiod required to disrupt photorefractoriness to short-day and long-day photoperiods, respectively. In Experiment 1, 4 groups of Suffolk breed ewes--designated B1, B2, B3, and B4--were placed in photochambers one day before the winter solstice, exposed to a 16L:8D photoperiod for 0, 30, 60, or 90 days, and then exposed to a 10L:14D photoperiod until the time of the summer solstice. Blood samples taken by venipuncture thrice weekly were analyzed for progesterone concentrations. The interval between start of the study and cessation of estrous cycles did not differ significantly between groups (p greater than 0.05). All 6 ewes in Group B1 then remained in anestrus for the duration of the study. Four of the 6 ewes in Group B2, and all ewes in Groups B3 and B4 resumed cycles after exposure to the 10L:14D photoperiod. In Experiment 2, 4 groups of ewes--designated A1, A2, A3, and A4--were placed in photochambers one day before the summer solstice, exposed to a 10L:14D photoperiod for 0, 30, 60, and 90 days, respectively, and then exposed to a 16L:8D photoperiod. Ewes in Group A1 started estrous cycles at a time not significantly different from ewes kept outdoors. However, onset of cycles was significantly advanced (p less than 0.05) in ewes exposed to 10L:14D. After ewes were returned to the 16L:8D photoperiod, estrous cycles were suppressed in 5 of 6 ewes in Group A2 and in all ewes in Groups A3 and A4.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Finnish Landrace x Southdown ewes were ovariectomized (OVX) and subjected to daily photoperiods of 16L:8D (Group I) or 8L:16D (Group II) for 84 days. Ewes were then either adrenalectomized (ADX) (N = 5 for Group I; N = 4 for Group II) or sham ADX (N = 6 for Groups I + II). After surgery, ewes in Group I were subjected to 8L:16D for 91 days and 16L:8D for 91 days whereas ewes in Group II were exposed to 16L:8D for 91 days and 8L:16D for 91 days. Oestradiol implants were inserted into all ewes on Day 148. Sequential blood samples were taken at 28, 56, 91, 119, 147 and 168 days after surgery to determine secretory profiles of LH and prolactin. Photoperiod did not influence LH release in Group I in the absence of oestradiol. Although photoperiod influenced frequency and amplitude of LH pulses in Group II before oestradiol treatment, adrenalectomy did not prevent these changes in patterns of LH release. However, in Group II the increase in LH pulse amplitude during exposure to long days was greater (P less than 0.01) in adrenalectomized ewes than in sham-operated ewes. Mean concentrations of LH increased in ADX ewes on Days 91 (P = 0.07) and 119 (P less than 0.05). Adrenalectomy failed to influence photoperiod-induced changes in mean concentrations of LH, amplitude of LH pulses and frequency of LH pulses in the presence of oestradiol. Concentrations of prolactin were influenced by photoperiod. In Groups I and II concentrations of prolactin increased (P less than 0.01) after adrenalectomy, but the magnitude of this effect decreased over time.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Ten ewes of each of two breeds, Dorset Horn (long breeding season) and Welsh Mountain (short breeding season), were given subcutaneous oestradiol-17 beta implants and then ovariectomized. Another 10 ewes of each breed were left intact. On 3 May 1982, all the ewes were housed in an artificial photoperiod of 16L:8D. After 4 weeks, half of the ewes of each breed and physiological state were abruptly exposed to a short-day (8L:16D) photoperiod while the others remained in long days (16L:8D). The time of onset of the breeding season was significantly (P less than 0.05) advanced in ewes switched to short days (12 August +/- 10 days) compared to those maintained in long days (4 September +/- 14 days). Dorset Horn ewes began to cycle (20 July +/- 7 days) significantly (P less than 0.001) earlier than Welsh Mountain ewes (19 September +/- 6 days). Disparities in the time of onset of cyclic activity in ewes of different breeds and daylength groups were echoed in disparities in the time at which plasma LH and FSH concentrations rose in oestrogen-implanted, ovariectomized ewes of the same light treatment group. Prolactin concentrations showed an immediate decrease in ewes switched to short days, but remained elevated in long-day ewes. Since the breeding season started in the presence of high prolactin concentrations in long-day ewes, it seems unlikely that prolactin is an important factor determining the timing of the onset of cyclic activity.  相似文献

Endogenous circannual clocks are found in many long-lived organisms, but are best studied in mammal and bird species. Circannual clocks are synchronized with the environment by changes in photoperiod, light intensity and possibly temperature and seasonal rainfall patterns. Annual timing mechanisms are presumed to have important ultimate functions in seasonally regulating reproduction, moult, hibernation, migration, body weight and fat deposition/stores. Birds that live in habitats where environmental cues such as photoperiod are poor predictors of seasons (e.g. equatorial residents, migrants to equatorial/tropical latitudes) rely more on their endogenous clocks than birds living in environments that show a tight correlation between photoperiod and seasonal events. Such population-specific/interspecific variation in reliance on endogenous clocks may indicate that annual timing mechanisms are adaptive. However, despite the apparent adaptive importance of circannual clocks, (i) what specific adaptive value they have in the wild and (ii) how they function are still largely untested. Whereas circadian clocks are hypothesized to be generated by molecular feedback loops, it has been suggested that circannual clocks are either based upon (i) a de-multiplication ('counting') of circadian days, (ii) a sequence of interdependent physiological states, or (iii) one or more endogenous oscillators, similar to circadian rhythms. We tested the de-multiplication of days (i) versus endogenous regulation hypotheses (ii) and (iii) in captive male and female house sparrows (Passer domesticus). We assessed the period of reproductive (testicular and follicular) cycles in four groups of birds kept either under photoperiods of LD 12L:12D (period length: 24h), 13.5L:13.5D (27 h), 10.5L:10.5D (23 h) or 12D:8L:3D:1L (24-h skeleton photoperiod), respectively, for 15 months. Contrary to predictions from the de-multiplication hypothesis, individuals experiencing 27-h days did not differ (i.e. did not have longer) annual reproductive rhythms than individuals from the 21- or 24-h day groups. However, in line with predictions from endogenous regulation, birds in the skeleton group had significantly longer circannual period lengths than all other groups. Birds exposed to skeleton photoperiods experienced fewer light hours per year than all other groups (3285 versus 4380) and had a lower daily energy expenditure, as tested during one point of the annual cycle using respirometry. Although our results are tantalizing, they are still preliminary as birds were only studied over a period of 15 months. Nevertheless, the present data fail to support a 'counting of circadian days' and instead support hypotheses proposing whole-organism processes as the mechanistic basis for circannual rhythms. We propose a novel energy turnover hypothesis which predicts a dependence of the speed of the circannual clock on the overall energy expenditure of an organism.  相似文献

The varied carpet beetle Anthrenus verbasci L. has a circannual pupation rhythm and pupates in the spring in the wild. The change in photoperiod acts as a predominant zeitgeber for this rhythm. However, it is unclear whether the change in ambient temperature acts as a zeitgeber. The present study examines the effects of low‐temperature pulses on this circannual rhythm by exposing larvae kept under constant short‐day conditions (LD 12 : 12 h) at 20 °C to a lower temperature of 15, 10 or 5 °C for 8 or 12 weeks at various phases. Larval development and pupation are suppressed during exposure to low temperature, with this pupation being induced in sufficiently grown larvae within 2 months of a return to 20 °C. These results are attributed to the exogenous suppression and stimulation of pupation, rather than being related to the circannual rhythm (i.e. masking of the circannual rhythm by temperature). Furthermore, long‐term observations demonstrate the existence of phase‐dependent phase shifts of circannual rhythm as a result of low‐temperature pulses. Circannual phase response curves to low temperature are constructed on the basis of the phase shifts obtained. A low‐temperature pulse as a winter signal can reset the circannual rhythm of A. verbasci. It is probable that both temperature and photoperiod play a role in the entrainment of this circannual rhythm to a natural year.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether the insertion of a continuous-release melatonin implant into ewes provides a short-day photoperiodic signal or acts as a functional pinealectomy (provides no specific photoperiodic signal but renders ewes incapable of responding to changes in photoperiod). Ewes primed with 60 long days (18L:6D) during the spring were moved to intermediate day length (13L:11D) for 66 days and then given one of five treatments: 1) short-day control, second drop in photoperiod to 8L:16D; 2) intermediate-photoperiod control, kept on 13L:11D; 3) pinealectomy and kept on 13L:11D; 4) melatonin implant and kept on 13L:11D; 5) melatonin implant and moved to 8L:16D. Mean number of estrous cycles per group and total duration of reproductive activity were determined. Ewes in all groups began to exhibit estrous cycles after the initial reduction in photoperiod. The number of estrous cycles and duration of reproductive activity differed among groups. The number of estrous cycles and duration of reproductive activity was extended in ewes receiving the second drop in photoperiod compared to that of the intermediate-photoperiod controls. Pinealectomized ewes had a number of estrous cycles and duration of reproductive activity similar to those of ewes maintained on the intermediate photoperiod. Melatonin implants increased the number of estrous cycles and prolonged reproductive activity in ewes maintained on the intermediate photoperiod; melatonin implants did not prevent the extension of reproductive activity in ewes receiving the second photoperiodic drop to the short daylength.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

An endogenous circannual rhythm drives the seasonal reproductive cycle of a broad spectrum of species. This rhythm is synchronized to the seasons (i.e., entrained) by photoperiod, which acts by regulating the circadian pattern of melatonin secretion from the pineal gland. Prior work has revealed that melatonin patterns secreted in spring/summer entrain the circannual rhythm of reproductive neuroendocrine activity in sheep, whereas secretions in winter do not. The goal of this study was to determine if inability of the winter-melatonin pattern to entrain the rhythm is due to the specific melatonin pattern secreted in winter or to the stage of the circannual rhythm at that time of year. Either a summer- or a winter-melatonin pattern was infused for 70 days into pinealectomized ewes, centered around the summer solstice, when an effective stimulus readily entrains the rhythm. The ewes were ovariectomized and treated with constant-release estradiol implants, and circannual cycles of reproductive neuroendocrine activity were monitored by serum LH concentrations. Only the summer-melatonin pattern entrained the circannual reproductive rhythm. The inability of the winter pattern to do so indicates that the mere presence of a circadian melatonin pattern, in itself, is insufficient for entrainment. Rather, the characteristics of the melatonin pattern, in particular a pattern that mimics the photoperiodic signals of summer, determines entrainment of the circannual rhythm of reproductive neuroendocrine activity in the ewe.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in nocturnal prolactin secretion and their relationship with melatonin secretion were monitored in wild (Mouflon, Ovis gmelini musimon) and domesticated sheep (breed Manchega, Ovis aries). Two groups of eleven adult females each, were maintained outdoors under natural photoperiod. Plasma concentrations of prolactin and melatonin were determined during the summer and winter solstices and the autumn and spring equinoxes. Blood samples were collected every 3h during the night hours, and 1h before and after the onset of darkness and sunrise. Maximum mean plasma concentrations of prolactin during the dark-phase in Mouflons were observed in the summer solstice, (P<0.001) and in the summer solstice and spring equinox in Manchega ewes (P<0.001). Mean plasma concentrations of prolactin were higher in the wild species (P<0.001) during the summer solstice. In contrast, during the spring equinox, mean levels of prolactin were higher in Manchega ewes than in Mouflons (P<0.05). Plasma prolactin concentrations showed a nocturnal rhythm in both breeds, with seasonal variations (P<0.001). The increase in plasma melatonin levels during the first hour after sunset was accompanied to increasing concentrations of PRL 1h after the onset of darkness, only in the autumn and spring equinox for the Mouflon, and in the summer solstice and spring equinox for the Manchega ewes. In Mouflons, the fall of plasma PRL concentrations about the middle dark-phase in all the periods studied, coincided with high levels of melatonin. A similar relation was observed in Manchega ewes only in the winter solstice and spring equinox. The current study shows that the nocturnal rhythm of prolactin secretion exhibits seasonal variation; differences in the patterns of prolactin secretion between Mouflon and Manchega sheep are taken to represent the effects of genotype.  相似文献

In order to elucidate the circannual cycles of fat deposition and depletion in hibernating bats, annual rhythm of body weight was examined in Vespertilio superans superans under a variety of environmental conditions. Under near natural conditions, adult females put on weight rapidly from October to November. The laboratory born subadult females kept in constant darkness at warm temperature gained weight at the same time as the adults. The length of weight cycle was about 10 months in adult females kept in 14 L : 10 D at about 24°C. These results suggest that cycles of fat deposition and loss are controlled by a modifiable endogenous circannual rhythm. Body weight rhythm persisted normally under warmer environmental conditions preventing the bats from hibernation. It is considered that the circannual cycles of fat gain and loss are relatively stable and not dependent on the hibernation cycle. Prolonged gestation period and delayed beginning of lactation by cold environment in summer did not affect the body weight rhythm. Temperature may be a more important environmental stimulus (or Zeitgeber) for the circannual rhythm than light and its effects may vary with phases.  相似文献

1. Adult male Syrian hamsters were killed at nine intervals during a 24 hr period in the autumn, after 2 months either indoors in controlled conditions or in natural outdoor conditions. 2. Harderian glands were taken for determination of N-acetyltransferase (NAT) and hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase (HIOMT) activities and melatonin and porphyrin concentrations. 3. Mean 24 hr Harderian NAT and melatonin values were lower outside than inside. 4. Twenty-four hour melatonin rhythms were detected with similar daytime (afternoon) acrophases in both environmental conditions. 5. An NAT rhythm was seen only in animals kept inside, with a circadian maximum in the late dark phase. 6. Mean 24 hr HIOMT activity was slightly higher outdoors than indoors, and 24 hr rhythms were not detected in either condition. 7. Mean porphyrin concentrations were higher outdoors, with 24 hr rhythms detected in both conditions and a significantly earlier nocturnal circadian maximum outdoors.  相似文献

Plasma prolactin concentrations were higher (P < 0.001) in newborn red deer calves whose mothers had been maintained for the last 14 weeks of gestation in long days (18 h light) (group L, n = 9) than in those whose mothers had been kept over the same period in short days (6 h light) (group S, n = 5). After transfer of all hinds and suckled calves on the day of birth to constant intermediate daylength (12 h light), prolactin concentrations decreased exponentially (P < 0.001) in group L calves, but not in group S, during the first 21 days. Thereafter, prolactin fell to a nadir in group L calves and rose to peak values in group S calves at 8-12 weeks post partum (P = 0.003), before converging again by 14 weeks. The pattern of prolactin secretion over the first 14 weeks of life was therefore significantly affected by prenatal photoperiod. Plasma prolactin concentrations in the adult hinds were higher (P < 0.001) in group L than group S at 4-10 weeks before parturition; they were similarly high around parturition and fell thereafter to baseline values after 7 weeks. These results provide evidence that deer fetuses respond to photoperiodic information, thereby acquiring a photoperiodic history in utero that influences postnatal responses to photoperiod.  相似文献

Castrate rams and ovariectomized ewes were maintained in the presence of entire rams and ewes and subjected to successive periods of alternating 6 h light:18 h darkness ('short' days) and 18 h light:6 h darkness ('long' days) preceded by a period of 12 h light:12 h darkness ('constant' light days). Plasma concentrations of LH and prolactin were measured in the castrate animals in order to determine how LH and prolactin secretion responded to the artificial light regime and corresponding periods of elevated or depressed testicular and ovarian activity in the entire rams and ewes. There was no variation in mean plasma LH concentrations or LH pulse frequency with either the changes in photoperiod or the phases of gonadal activity in the entire animals. However, there was a highly significant (P less than 0.001) relationship between prolactin secretion and the artificial photoperiod in both castrate groups with high and low levels coinciding with long and short days respectively. In addition, there was a marginally significant (P less than 0.1) relationship between prolactin secretion in the castrate ram and the stage of testicular activity in the entire rams with elevated levels associated with regressed activity. Prolactin secretion in the ovariectomized ewes was significantly (P less than 0.05) related to the phase of ovarian development with high levels associated with acyclic activity. It is concluded that LH secretion and pituitary responsiveness to exogenous GnRH were not modified by the artificial light regime. However, the changing light pattern was physiologically 'perceived' by the castrate animals as indicted by a concomitant variation in plasma prolactin concentrations.  相似文献
