Mountain hares Lepus timidus L. typify species that occupy a broad geographic range and have flexible foraging and nutritional strategies. Such species may show a range of responses to habitat modification. This study aimed to provide a basis for prediction of the impact of mountain hares on woodland establishment, and of woodland establishment on mountain hare distribution. The selection of and the extent of incorporation of new woodland into the home range of mountain hares was investigated in an area where Scots pine Pinus sylvestris L. woodland was establishing within their usual habitat in Britain, upland heather moorland. Seasonal home, day and night-range sizes of radio-tracked mountain hares were determined using the multinuclear probability polygon technique and analysed using residual maximum likelihood (REML). Habitat selection was analysed using compositional analysis. Three main habitat types were available to hares: heather moorland with trees, heather moorland and grassland-mire. Mean home-range size of mountain hares in summer was 10.3 ha and in winter 9.6 ha. There were no significant seasonal or sex differences in home-range size. Females selected grassland-mire habitat in summer and showed no strong selection for any habitat in winter. Males selected heather moorland in both summer and winter. Heather moorland with trees was not selected preferentially by mountain hares of either sex in summer or winter. The absence of selection for areas of newly establishing-Scots pine woodland suggests that any browsing damage to trees by hares is most likely to be a function of the local abundance of mountain hares, rather than a result of active preference of hares for the modified habitat. 相似文献

Utilisation of heather at three Scottish moors, by red grouse, mountain hares, sheep and red deer, was measured by collecting their faecal droppings regularly from plots on heather patches of different ages. Rates of heather growth differed between moors, and preferences of the four species, all grazers of heather, were related more closely to its height than to its age. Thus hares spent most time on ground with heather less than 15 cm high, sheep less than 20 cm, grouse preferred heather 10–30 cm high and deer spent most time on heather over 25 cm high.

The effect of variations in the density of a submerged macrophyte, Lagarosiphon ilicifolius, on epiphytic macroinvertebrate community structure in the shallow waters of a sheltered bay of Lake Kariba were investigated. The body size class distributions of a mayfly, Cloeon (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae), and the damselfly family, Coenagrionidae, were also assessed with respect to variation in vegetation density. Macroinvertebrates were sampled from low-, moderate- and high-density beds of L. ilicifolius. There were no significant differences in individual taxon and total macroinvertebrate abundances, macroinvertebrate richness and diversity with respect to vegetation density. In all three density categories the functional feeding group (FFG) composition was dominated by collector-gatherers and collector-filterers. The abundance of the two FFGs did not change significantly within each, as well as among, the three vegetation-density categories (ANOVA, p > 0.05). The largest size class of Cloeon occurred only in high-density beds, whereas the largest coenagrionid individuals were obtained from low- and moderate-density beds and were absent from high-density beds. The results suggest that variation in the density of Lagarosiphon does not affect epiphytic macroinvertebrate community structure, but does affect body-size distributions of macroinvertebrate taxa, probably by affecting predator-prey interactions. 相似文献

1. We examined the response of a predatory benthic fish, the longnose dace ( Rhinichthys cataractae ), to patchiness in the distribution of benthic macroinvertebrates on cobbles at three hierarchical spatial scales during summer and autumn 1996, and spring 1997 in a southern Appalachian stream. 2. At the primary scale (four to five individual cobbles separated by <1 m), the intensity of foraging was not correlated with the biomass of benthic macroinvertebrates/cobble, regardless of season. 3. At the secondary scale (i.e. foraging patches <5 m in diameter) we found that benthic macroinvertebrates were patchily distributed in summer, but not in autumn or spring. Concomitantly, in summer, longnose dace foraged on cobbles with a significantly higher biomass of benthic macronvertebrates than nearby, randomly selected cobbles with similar physical conditions (i.e. longnose dace tended to avoid low-prey foraging patches). In contrast, when benthic macroinvertebrates were distributed homogeneously (spring and autumn), dace did not select patches with a significantly higher biomass of benthic macroinvertebrates than that available on randomly selected cobbles. 4. At the tertiary scale (i.e. stream reaches 11–19 m long), the biomass of benthic macroinvertebrates (per cobble per reach) was patchily distributed (i.e. differed significantly among reaches) in all seasons. Among reaches with physical characteristics preferred by longnose dace, (i.e. erosional reaches dominated by cobble/boulder substratum and high current velocity), we detected a significant, positive correlation between the biomass of benthic macroinvertebrates/cobble and longnose dace density in all seasons. 5. Our results demonstrated that both spatial and temporal patchiness in resource availability influenced significantly the use of both foraging patches and stream reaches by longnose dace. 相似文献

The foraging efficiency of juvenile perch (Perca fluviatilis), feeding on two types of prey, was studied in laboratory experiments. Waterfleas (Daphnia magna) and phantom midge larvae (Chaoborus flavicans) were offered in a range of densities, either separately or combined. Perch fed more efficiently on each prey type separately than when both were mixed. Foraging efficiency decreased with an increase of mixed prey density with both prey types present in equal numbers, but also when the proportion of Chaoborus increased. This could be caused by the existence of different hunting techniques, each of which is fully efficient in the presence of one prey type only. In the presence of two prey types, the predator constantly has to switch from one hunting technique to another. 相似文献

We assessed the response of a guild of endemic medium and large-bodied carabid species to the local (fine-grained) habitat heterogeneity induced by man. The study was conducted by means of trapping (without killing and preservative agents) and radio-tracking methods (to collect data on the spatial ecology of the endangered species Carabus olympiae Sella). Habitat differentiation induced by man (a mosaic of beech forests, alpen rose shrubberies and pastures) affected species richness and abundance of the guild, which were significantly higher in forests and/or shrubberies than in pastures. Most species preferred forests and shrubberies, with the only exception of Carabus concolor Fabricius, which preferred open areas. Species distribution was also affected by stone density and cattle grazing intensity. In particular, petrophilous species peaked on the roadside because of the high stone density there (stones amassed during road construction), while species abundances significantly lowered in overgrazed pastures. The compactness of the paths made by C. olympiae individuals (evaluated through a tortuosity index) was significantly higher in beech forests than in alpen rose shrubberies, indicating movements in the latter habitat type were bound by the spatial distribution of shrubs, which imposes a limit on path tortuosity. Our findings suggest that local ground beetle species diversity strongly depends on small-scale anthropogenic variables (namely habitat type, stone density and grazing intensity), and that habitat modifications (namely from forest to shrubbery) may significantly affect species movement patterns. General and local conservation management suggestions are given in conformity with these results. 相似文献

Searching patterns and oviposition success of the aphid parasitoid Aphidius rosae were analysed in different abiotic conditions (simulated wind, simulated drizzling rain, simulated shower, high temperature, low humidity, standard conditions) in the laboratory. Residence times, time allocation and oviposition success did not differ significantly between females foraging on rose shoots during periods with high temperature (>33°C) and low humidity (35%–40% relative humidity) and females searching under standard laboratory conditions (20°C, 65%–70% relative humidity, no wind). A wind speed of 2 m/s reduced the oviposition numbers significantly, and females spent much more time resting than searching for hosts. Females did not leave a shoot during wind, but departed quickly after wind had ceased. Simulated drizzling rain or simulated showers had the strongest effects on A. rosae foraging. Both types of rain prevented all foraging activities including departure from the shoot, and females laid no eggs during rain. After rain had stopped, females were mainly engaged with cleaning themselves and laid relatively few eggs compared to standard conditions. The impact of unfavourable abiotic environmental factors like wind or rain may help to explain why many parasitoids lay only a small proportion of their available eggs when foraging in the field. 相似文献

As a prerequisite for models of foraging behaviour of the whelk, Morula marginalba Blainville (Muricidae), the effects of variation in density of prey on the rate of feeding of the predator were examined in field conditions for three coexisting species of prey. Densities of prey used were those at which the prey, two limpets and a barnacle, occurred naturally in the rocky intertidal habitat.Large limpets, Cellana tramoserica (Sowerby) can resist attacks by predatory gastropods by raising the mantle over the outside of the shell. These experiments showed that no C. tramoserica were killed by Morula marginalba even at very great densities and with no alternative prey present. For the small limpet Patelloida latistrigata (Angas), one of the whelk's most highly preferred prey, juveniles were eaten 1.4 times as fast as adults. Fitting the random predator equation gave greater attack coefficients and shorter handling times for juvenile than adult limpets.Sizes of both predator and prey affected rates of eating barnacles, Tesseropora rosea (Krauss), but not in a simple way. Whelks of 15-mm aperture length ate adult barnacles 4.2 times faster than did 12-mm whelks, but there was no significant difference in the rates at which the two sizes of snail ate juvenile barnacles.Rates of feeding on T. rosea and Patelloida latistrigata increased significantly with prey density. These results form a basis for including the density of prey in models of spatial dispersion of the predatory gastropod Morula marginalba. 相似文献

The effect of elevated carbon dioxide and fertilization on primary and secondary metabolites in birch,Betula pendula (Roth) 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Seedlings of European white birch (Betula pendula Roth) were grown in growth chambers for one growth season under four carbon dioxide regimes (350, 700, 1050 and 1400 ppm) and at three fertilization levels (0, 100 and 500 kg ha–1 monthly). The soluble carbohydrates and secondary phenolics in the leaves and stems were analysed. It was found that fertilizer addition reduced the amounts of glucose and fructose while sucrose remained almost unaffected. The sugar content of leaves increased at 700 ppm and 1050 ppm of CO2 and decreased at the highest CO2 concentration (1400 ppm). The amounts of proanthocyanidins and flavonoids in leaves decreased with fertilization addition and increased with CO2 enrichment. The production of simple phenolic glucosides varied according to the fertilization and CO2 treatments. The triterpenoid content of stems seemed to increase with fertilization and CO2-addition. Our results indicate that the production of phytochemicals in the birch seedlings is very sensitive to both fertilization and CO2 addition, which is in agreement with earlier studies, and thus provide some support for the hypothesis of carbon allocation to plant defence when there is an excess of carbon and nutrient. The considerable variation in the production of secondary components may indicate that the synthesis of these defensive metabolites can be regulated by a plant to certain extent, depending on the ability of the plant to acclimate to changes in the physical environment. 相似文献

Prey selection behaviour of three-spined sticklebacks, Gasterosteus aculeatus L., was studied in two experiments. Where possible, the experimental apparatus satisfied the assumptions of the simplest optimal diet model (the basic prey model); prey were presented sequentially, the fish could not search for and handle prey at the same time, and net energy gain, handling time and encounter rate were fixed. Experiment 1 presented fish with a range of Asellus sizes so that pursuit ( p ) and handling ( h ) time could be related to prey size. Published energy values of Asellus together with pursuit and handling times were used to calculate E /( p+h ) for Asellus measuring 3,4,5,6,7 and 9 mm. Pursuit times did not differ with prey size but handling times did. E /( p+h ) was very variable particularly at the larger prey sizes. Experiment 2 presented fish with two sequences of prey differing in the encounter rate with the most profitable prey sizes. Fish did not select the diet predicted by the basic prey model tending to always ignore the largest prey even when net energy gain would have been maximized by including them in the diet. Further analysis showed that the probability of a prey size being taken was a function of prey size, fish stomach fullness and encounter rate. It is concluded that the basic prey model is too simple to capture the behaviour of the fish. One of its main faults is that the changing state of the fish through the feeding bout is ignored. 相似文献

We use microeconomic theory to frame hypotheses about the effects of income on the use of non-timber rain forest products. We hypothesize that an increase in income: (a) encourages foraging specialization, resulting in the extraction of fewer goods; (b) increases the share of household income from occupations besides foraging; (c) produces a yearly value from the extraction of nontimber forest goods of about $50 per hectare; and (d) produces depletion of forest goods entering commercial channels and sustainable extraction of goods facing cheaper industrial substitutes. To examine these hypotheses we present worldwide ethnographic information and preliminary findings from field work carried out among the Sumu Indians of Nicaragua. Field work suggests that higher income produces: (a) foraging specialization with animals rather than with plants; (b) a decline in the economic importance of forest goods in household income; (c) and a rise in the value of non-timber goods removed from the forest to about $35/ha/year. The effect of growth rate, body weight, age, and season on ovarian development and maturation was investigated for Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) reared in the laboratory over 10 months, for each of two consecutive years, 1978–1980. Cod were also collected from the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the Scotian Shelf, Georges Bank, the Flemish Cap, and the N.E. Newfoundland Shelf.The state of maturity was recognized by oocyte size. Stage I oocytes did not vary in size with growth rate, season, age, or maturity, while the size of stage II oocytes was positively correlated with maturity and negatively correlated with maximum stage of development achieved. Ovarian wall thickness was positively correlated with age and maturity.The frequency distribution of stage I and II oocytes distinguished the state of maturation, with cod that would mature by the next spawning season having a minimum of 20% () of their oocytes at stage II or greater level of development.Maturing 3-yr-old cod had greater life specific growth rates than immature 3-yr-olds, but growth rates during the third year itself were not significantly different. A hypothesis of a three-part density-dependent mechanism controlling fecundity is postulated. Future reductions in partial recruitment and total fecundity are predicted for the Gulf of St. Lawrence cod stock based on calculated growth rates for Gulf cod in 1979. 相似文献

Artificial extracellular matrices play important roles in the regulation of stem cell behavior. To generate materials for tissue engineering, active functional groups, such as amino, carboxyl, and hydroxyl, are often introduced to change the properties of the biomaterial surface. In this study, we chemically modified coverslips to create surfaces with different amino densities and investigated the adhesion, migration, and differentiation of neural stem cells (NSCs) under serum-free culture conditions. We observed that a higher amino density significantly promoted NSCs attachment, enhanced neuronal differentiation and promoted excitatory synapse formation in vitro. These results indicate that the amino density significantly affected the biological behavior of NSCs. Thus, the density and impact of functional groups in extracellular matrices should be considered in the research and development of materials for tissue engineering. 相似文献

Eucomis (Family Hyacinthaceae) bulbs are greatly valued in traditionalmedicine for the treatment of a variety of ailments, predominantly thoseinvolving pain, fever and inflammation. The COX-1 assay was used to screenethanolic extracts prepared from the dried leaves, bulbs and roots of E. autumnalis (subspecies autumnalis) to determine the variation ofanti-inflammatory activity with age and season of harvest. Young plantswere found to have large amounts of COX-1 inhibitory activity, particularlyin the leaves. As the plant matured, greater activity was associated with thebulb and root extracts. The anti-inflammatory activity of the leaf, bulb androot extracts varied slightly throughout the year, with the greatest levelsdetected towards the end of the growing season, shortly before the onsetof dormancy. A seaweed application (Kelpak) decreased the anti-inflammatory activity of the leaf, bulb and root extracts, while increasedtemperature/increased light intensity had no significant effect on theCOX-1 inhibitory activity of the leaf extracts. The bulb extracts fromtreated plants harvested towards the end of the growing season showed asignificant decrease in anti-inflammatory activity, while the anti-inflammatory activity of the corresponding not root extracts increased. 相似文献

Food acquisition in central-place foraging animals demands efficient detection and retrieval of resources. Most ant species rely on a mass recruitment foraging strategy, which requires that some potential foragers remain at the nest where they can be recruited to food once resources are found. Because this strategy reduces the number of workers initially looking for food, it may reduce the food detection rate while increasing the postdiscovery food retrieval rate. In previous studies this tradeoff has been analyzed by computer simulation and mathematical models. Both kinds of models show that food acquisition rate is greatly influenced by food distribution and resource patch size: as food is condensed into fewer patches, the maximal acquisition rate is achieved by a shift to fewer initial searchers and more potential recruits. In general, these models show that a mass recruitment strategy is most effective when resources are clumped. We tested this prediction in two experiments by letting laboratory colonies of the Argentine ant (Linepithema humile) forage for resources placed in different distributions. When all prey were small, retrieval rate increased with increasing resource patch size, in support of foraging models. When prey were large, however, the mass of prey returned to the colony over time was much lower than when prey were small and widely distributed. As more ants reached a large prey item, the distance the prey item was transported decreased due to a greater emphasis on feeding rather than transport. Because Argentine ants can transport more biomass externally than they can ingest, food retrieval that depends only on ingestion can depress the biomass retrieval rate. Thus, our results generally support theoretical foraging models, but we show how prey size, through differential prey-handling behavior, can produce an outcome greatly different from that predicted only on the distribution of resources. 相似文献
