Fast locomotion of some African ungulates   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Ten species of ungulate were filmed, galloping in their natural habitat. They ranged in size from Thomson's gazelle (about 20 kg) to giraffe (about 1000 kg). They were pursued to make them run as fast as possible. The films have been analysed to determine speed, stride frequency, stride and step lengths, and duty factors. The dependence of these quantities on body size is discussed.  

Summary:


Fast locomotion of zebra, giraffe, warthog and seven species of Bovidae has been studied. The animals were filmed from a pursuing vehicle while galloping in their natural habitat.
Stride frequency was more closely correlated with limb length (represented by hip height) than with body mass. Mean stride frequency was proportional to (hip height)-0·51 and maximum stride frequency to (hip height) -0·63.
Maximum speed was between 10 and 14 m s -1 for all species except buffalo (7 m s -1). It was not significantly correlated with body mass.
Since the small species ran at least as fast as the large ones they attained higher Froude numbers. Relative stride length was approximately 1·8 (Froude number)0·39 for all species, irrespective of size. Relative step length was approximately 0·65 (Froude number)0·2, both for the fore feet and for the hind ones. The vertical forces exerted by the feet are proportional to (body weight)×(Froude number)0·2 so the forces at maximum speed are larger multiples of body weight for small species than for large ones.  相似文献

The scaling of ovarian follicle and oocyte sizes according to body weight ( M , ranging from 0005–500 kg) has been analysed using data obtained from 22 mammalian species in nine orders. The diameters of non-growing (primordial) follicles were correlated significantly with body weight, the relationship being described by the allometric formula y = 0028 M 0.10. The mean size at which growing follicles began to accumulate extracellular fluid was approximately the same in all species, 0–3 mm diameter. Graafian follicle sizes varied allometrically with body weight as a result of differences in the volumes of follicular fluid rather than those of oocytes, which were relatively similar in eutherian mammals. The statistical significance of the correlation between Graafian and body sizes was increased when the dimensions for an ovulatory quota of follicles were combined because follicles in polyovulating species were disproportionately small. The total Graafian surface areas and volumes were then predicted from body weight by 58–4 M 0.65 and 18–5 M 1.06, respectively. Follicular dimensions in the three species of primates were significantly greater than predicted by the allometric relationship. The exponents of these relationships show that the total volume of a set of preovulatory follicles varies approximately isometrically with body weight and, therefore, with the presumptive hormone distribution volume ( M 1.0). The hypoallometric relationship of follicular surface area demonstrates that, during the course of the evolution of body size, the surface area for secretion has not increased to match the dilution of hormones in the body pool.  相似文献

The range size distributions of 6643 species in ten different fish and invertebrate taxa dwelling in pelagic (latitudinal range sizes) and benthic (latitudinal and depth range sizes) habitats on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean (80°N−70°S) were studied. The objectives were to analyse: (1) the range size distribution patterns for the various taxa and whether they have right/left skewed or lognormal distributions; (2) the geographical species distributions, to ascertain whether the distribution ranges change with latitude (Rapoport's rule); and (3) the relationship between the depth ranges of benthic species and their maximum depth of occurrence and how depth range size distributions change with latitude. The pelagic taxa exhibited larger range sizes than did the benthic taxa, continental slope/rise species excepted. On the other hand, the boundaries between geographical provinces for both benthic taxa and pelagic taxa tended to occur in association with major oceanographic processes. The shape of the latitudinal range frequency distributions (LRFDs) of the pelagic organisms were distinctly left‐skewed, and the LRFDs for most taxa were significantly different from lognormal. There was no common pattern for the distributions of the benthic organisms, which were lognormal in Cephalopoda, Stomatopoda, and Crustacea Decapoda and tended to be left‐skewed and significantly different from lognormal in Pisces. The applicability of Rapoport's rule was not clearly inferable from the results, and the rule appears to be conditioned by the location of biogeographical boundaries and the endemism rate in the different biogeographical provinces. A clear increase in depth range size with maximum depth range was observable for benthic species, confirming previous studies. Species’ depth range distributions displayed a discernible latitudinal pattern, right‐skewed at high latitudes and left‐skewed at low latitudes. The location of biogeographical boundaries, and endemism rate by biogeographical province were considered to be the factors most useful in explaining species’ distribution patterns and their conformity or nonconformity to Rapoport's rule. © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2003, 80 , 437–455.  相似文献

Effects of particle size, fish size and temperature on the filtration rate of silver carp were determined. When feeding at 20°C on zooplankton and spherical particles (yeast, micronic beads and pollen), 32-g silver carp filter particles larger than 70 urn at a maximum rate of 18.251 h−1. For particles smaller than 70 μm, filtration rates decrease with decreasing particle size until there is no measured filtration for particles smaller than 10 μm. Filtering rates ( FR ) for particles between 10 and 50 μm are described by the equation, FR =−20.8 + 21.7 × log particle diameter. Filtration rates rise as fish size, particle size and temperature increase. Filtration rates per unit biomass, however, fall as fish size increases: FR = 1.54 W0.713, where FR is the maximum filtration rate in 1 h 1 fish 1 and W is weight of fish in grammes. The results of these trials are consistent with the hypothesis that particle selection by silver carp is a mechanical, passive function of gill raker morphology.  相似文献

Bacteria grew to viable populations of 108–109 cfu/g during the fermentation of soybeans into tempe with the fungus, Rhizopus oligosporus. Bacillus pumilus and B. brevis were the predominant bacterial species, reaching populations of approximately 108 cfu/g during the 48 h fermentation. Species of Streptococcus faecium, Lactobacillus casei, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Enterobacter cloacae also contributed to the fermentation and achieved populations of 106–107 cfu/g. and accepted 25 May 1989  相似文献

1. The empirical relationships among body size, species richness and number of individuals may give insight into the factors controlling species diversity and the relative abundances of species. To determine these relationships, we sampled the arthropods of grasslands and savannahs at Cedar Creek, MN using sweep nets (90 525 individuals of 1225 species) and pitfall traps (12 721 individuals of 92 species). Specimens were identified, enumerated and measured to determine body size.
2. Both overall and within abundant taxonomic orders, species richness and numbers of individuals peaked at body sizes intermediate for each group. Evolution could create unimodal diversity patterns by random diversification around an ancestral body size or from size-dependent fitness differences. Local processes such as competition or predation could also create unimodal diversity distributions.
3. The average body size of a species depended significantly on its taxonomic order, but on contemporary trophic role only within the context of taxonomic order.
4. Species richness ( S i) within size classes was related to the number of individuals ( I i) as S i =  I i0·5. This relationship held across a 100 000-fold range of body sizes. Within size classes, abundance distributions of size classes were all similar power functions. A general rule of resource division, together with similar minimum population sizes, is sufficient to generate the relationship between species richness and number of individuals.
5. Smaller bodied species had slightly shallower abundance distributions and may, in general, persist at lower densities than larger species.
6. Our results suggest there may be fewer undescribed small arthropod species than previously thought and that most undescribed species will be smaller than arthropods.  相似文献

Abstract: To investigate certain biochemical aspects of myelination, a study was undertaken of the messenger-like RNA in the nervous system of pre- myelinating 14-day embryos and of myelinating 17-day embryos and 3-day chicks. The central and peripheral nervous systems of the chick were found to contain and to actively synthesize poly(A)+ RNA. RNA species binding to oligo(dT)-cellulose contained a relatively high proportion of adenylate residues and were resistant to the actions of pancreatic and T1 ribonucleases. Preparations labeled by incubation with adenosine in vitro showed a decrease in the proportion of poly(A)+ RNA as the age of the animal increased, while preparations labeled in vivo exhibited the opposite trend. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoretograms of both in vivo and in vitro labeled pqeparations showed that the poly(A)+ fractions contained mainly heterodisperse RNA species. The average molecular size of poly(A)+ RNAs of purified polysomal fractions of nerve RNA from 3-day chicks was smaller than 18S, whereas that of total poly(A) RNA was larger than 18s. The proportion of poly(A)+ molecules larger than 18s was lower in the rapidly myelinating nerve tissues of 17-day embryos and post-hatching chicks than in those of premyelinating 14-day embryos. Similar results were obtained for crude nuclear RNA fractions or RNA preparations fractionated under denaturing conditions. These results are consistent with previous work showing that the embryonic peripheral nerve contains a larger proportion of high-molecular-weight, messenger-like RNA molecules than does nerve tissue from young chicks or adults.  相似文献

The numbers of ovarian follicles present in the reserve pool of non-growing ('primordial') stages at the commencement of adult life in 19 species varied allometrically with both body weight ( M , in kg) and with maximum life expectation (L, in years), the mathematical expressions being 27700 M 0.47 and 820 M 1.58, respectively. These allometric relationships, which could not be accounted for by differences in reproductive behaviour patterns or ovulation rates, indicate that species differences in the size of the follicular store, perhaps accompanied by more parsimonious utilization, could be a life strategy which guarantees fecundity throughout most of the lifespan. The number of follicles in humans at menarcheal age is commensurate with body size, and follicular deficiency at menopause in mid-life may have therefore arisen adventitiously with lifespan extension.  相似文献

The apparent lack of significant recovery of western North Atlantic right whale populations may be related to the availability of prey in exploitable densities. We have attempted to estimate the concentration of zooplankton required by right whales to obtain a net energetic benefit over the long term, using estimated values for body weight, metabolic rate, assimilation efficiency, time spent feeding, mouth size and swimming speed. The estimated range of required energy densities is 7.57 to 2,394 kcal m−3 (3.17 × 104 to 1.00 × 107 joule m−3). These values are from one to more than three orders of magnitude greater than the densest concentration sampled in the vicinity of right whale aggregations in the Great South Channel. Right whales must seek out and exploit extremely dense patches of prey organisms in order to feed efficiently. The presence of such dense patches of zooplankton is likely to be a primary characteristic of spring, summer and fall right whale habitats.  相似文献

Abstract: In human astrocyte cultures established from second-trimester fetal brain tissue, ∼5–10% of total astrocyte population in unstimulated cultures were GD3+/glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP)+. The GD3+ cells were always GFAP+ and grew as flat, highly spread cells but changed to process-bearing cells after interleukin-1β (IL-1β) stimulation. It is interesting that IL-1β, a known mitogen for rat astrocytes, suppressed human fetal astrocyte proliferation as determined by [3H]thymidine incorporation, bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) labeling, and cell counting. The GD3+ population, however, consistently increased in absolute number after IL-1β stimulation, in a dose- and time-dependent manner. The IL-1β-mediated increase in number of GD3+ astrocytes was independent of initial cell density or serum concentration. By flow cytometry, IL-1β enhanced both the mean fluorescence intensity and the percentage of GD3+ cells. To investigate whether the increase in GD3+ astrocyte cell number was due to proliferation of preexisting GD3+ astrocytes or due to conversion of GD3 to GD3+ cells, we performed BrdU/GD3 double immunocytochemistry. BrdU/GD3 double-positive cells were extremely rare in both control and IL-1β-stimulated cultures. Moreover, an increase in number of GD3+ astrocytes was still observed in control and IL-1β-stimulated cultures where GD3+ cells had been initially eliminated by cell sorting. These results indicate that GD3+ astrocytes in human fetal culture may represent a postmitotic, differentiated, distinct phenotype.  相似文献

1. Nitrogen and carbon stable-isotope ratios (δ15N and δ13C) of body tissues, mound/nest materials and dietary substrates were determined in termite species with differing trophic habits, sampled from the Mbalmayo Forest Reserve, southern Cameroon.
2. δ15N of termite tissues was enriched gradually along a spectrum of species representing a trophic gradient from wood- to soil-feeding. Species that could be identified from their general biology and from gut content analysis as feeding on well-rotted wood or as wood/soil interface feeders showed δ15N intermediate between sound-wood-feeders and soil-feeders. It is proposed that δ15N is therefore a possible indicator of the functional position of species in the humification process. Differences in δ13C were also observed between wood-feeding and soil-feeding forms.
3. High values of δ15N in soil-feeding termites suggest that nitrogen fixation is of little importance in these species.
4. A wide range of isotope effects (the difference in isotope ratios between termites and their diet) was observed for both nitrogen (Δδ15N = –1.6 to + 8.8‰) and carbon (Δδ13C = –2.2 to + 3.0‰), which suggests a diversity of nutrient acquisition mechanisms within termites and diverse relationships between termites and their intestinal micro-organisms.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. Diet composition and the production of embryos were measured in Asplanchna girodi and Asplanchna priodonta collected through 3 years in the San Joaquin-Sacramento delta of California. The two species are sympatric in low to moderate densities for 5 months of the year.
2. Despite marked differences in the structure of the trophi, both species consumed the same array of prey species. Percentage composition of the diet varied both intra- and interspecifically. The food niches of the two species appear to differ little from one another.
3. Individuals of Asplanchna girodi had a larger mean number of prey in the gut per individual than did those of A. priodonta , due to their larger size. Per unit volume, each species prey gathering performance was the same. Asplanchna priodonta produced more embryos per calculated unit volume of prey ingested than did A. girodi .
4. During spring, when both species were present in the plankton, A. priodonta did not capture Size Class 2 and 5 animals (volumes 0.09–1.0 μm3×106 and 3.0–3.5 μm3X106 respectively) nor large Synchaeta . Both these prey classes were in the diet during the summer and autumn months. Several hypotheses are examined as possible explanations for this phenomenon.  相似文献

Endurance and swimming speed were measured in mackerel, herring and saithe when they were induced by the optomotor response to swim at prolonged speeds along a 28-m circular track through still water in a 10-m diameter gantry tank. The maximum sustained swimming speed ( U ms was measured as body lengths per second ( b.l.s −1) for each species and for saithe of different size groups. Herring with U ms of 4.06 b.l.s −1 (25.3 cm, 13.5°C) were the fastest, mackerel U ms was 3.5 b.l.s 1 (33 cm, 11.7°C) and saithe (14.4°C) showed a size effect where U ms at 25 cm was 3.5 b.l.s 1 and at 50 cm 2.2 b.l.s 1. When swimming at speeds higher that U ms, all three species showed reduced endurance as speed increased. How the curved track reduces the swimming speed is discussed.  相似文献

Male three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus have a fixed amount of sperm during the breeding season because spermatogenesis is inhibited at this time. A method was developed to estimate ejaculate size in situ by removing the sperm from the male's nest. The reliability of the method was tested using known numbers of sperm. In their first mating, males ejaculated 11·64 × 106 sperm (median), representing c. 5% of the male's sperm store (median 27·88 × 107 sperm). The amount of sperm in the testes was significantly reduced in males that had mated several times (median 8·09 × 107). Additionally, ejaculate size was smaller in these experienced males (median 8·79 × 105). Heavier and larger fish invested absolutely and relatively more sperm in a mating than did lighter and smaller fish. Ejaculate size did not correlate with the mass of the egg clutch.  相似文献

Patterns of oxygen consumption, ammonia and urea excretion were monitored during late embryogenesis, i.e. 5 days before mass hatching and 12 days during the free-swimming stage of whitefish larvae, Coregonus lavaretus. Oxygen consumption increased from 1.31 to 2.53 mgO2 h−1× 103 eggs−1 at hatching. Fasted, free-swimming larvae showed increasing oxygen consumption to the tenth day after hatching when it reached 5.52 mgO2h−1× 103 larvae−1. Ammonia and urea excretion increased during pre-hatching period from 52.1 to 163.2 and 26.8 to 51.4 μgh−1× 103 eggs−1, respectively. The nitrogen excretion rate increased between the sixth and tenth day of fasting, i.e. for ammonia from 117.7 to 160.9 and for urea from 35.8 to 52.5 μg h−1× 103 larvae−1. Cumulative data on nitrogen and energy metabolism indicated that during late embryogenesis, and up to the fifth day after hatching, protein dominated in the energy expenditure. During the free swimming stage, the ratio of fat to protein in energy expenditure rose from 0.86 to 1.99. Combined data for several fish species indicated high dependance of oxygen uptake during the hatching period on egg size and temperature.  相似文献

A comparative analysis using both independent contrasts (CAIC) and a species level analysis was used to investigate the allometric scaling of avian wing-bone lengths. Total arm ( ta =humerus+ulna+manus) scaled with positive allometry as body mass ( M )0.37–0.39. Similarly, and in accordance with previous studies, wing-span ( b ) was positively allometric, but CAIC suggested a lower allometric exponent ( M 0.35) than found using species as independent data points ( M 0.39). Contrary to previous studies, individual wing-bones appear to scale with similar exponents against M and scale isometrically with ta . In addition to a general trend for larger birds to have longer wings, wing-bones and ta , their ta was a larger proportion of their b . A detailed study of primary feather length and elbow joint angle across a wide range of bird species and bird size, however, is required before a conclusive explanation for this increase in ta relative to b in larger birds can be established. Scaling equations are presented that can be used to predict M , ta and b from individual wing-bone lengths, which may be of use to palaeontologists wishing to reconstruct whole animals from single bones.  相似文献

The gastric emptying time (G.E.T.) in turbot was investigated using X-radiography and was found to decrease with temperature. Small fish processed a given ration, expressed as percent body weight, faster than large fish (G.E.T. was found to be proportional to (fish weight)0.364). Large meals in a given fish were processed at a faster rate than small meals. Gastric emptying rate (G.E.R.) was found to be proportional to (meal size g)0.613 at 8° C and (meal size g)0.788 at 19° C. These exponents are in agreement with a recently proposed model relating G.E.T. and G.E.R. to meal size (Fänge & Grove, 1978). Large fish emptied a meal of given absolute size from the stomach at a faster rate (g h−1) than small fish. Experimental meals diluted with kaolin were evacuated in significantly less time than a control diet, suggesting that turbot may adjust feeding rates when food quality varies.  相似文献

Totals of 2.67 x 105 and 7.56 x 105 juvenile red sea bream of three size groups (10, 20 and 40 mm t.l.) marked with a fluorescent substance in the otolith were released in News Bay, Oita Prefecture, Japan, in July 1987 and June 1988, respectively; the aim was to estimate growth and mortality of different developmental stages.
Of fish released in 1987 and 1988, 10 618 and 4413, respectively were recaptured during those two years. Released fish remained in the bay until the end of summer, and afterwards migrated out towards open waters. Fish of the 40-mm group released in 1987 grew to over 200 mm t.l. in one year. Mean growth rate for 19 days after release was higher in the 40-mm group (0.87 mm day−1) than in the 20-mm group (0.74mm day−1). Survival rates over 19 days were 59.0 and 10.1 % for 40-mm and 20-mm fish, respectively, in 1987, and those over 30 days were 69.2, 3.3 and 0.0% for 40-mm, 20-mm and 10-mm fish, respectively, in 1988.
Cannibalism was indicated by the presence of marked otoliths for 20-mm fish in the stomachs of a few 40-mm individuals recaptured 2 days after release. Size-dependent growth and size-selective mortality were both noted in juvenile red sea bream, i.e. the relative size differential between larger and smaller individuals was maintained in the period between marking and recapture, and mortality was inversely proportional to size.  相似文献

Measurements have been made of the principal leg bones of 37 species representing almost the full range of sizes of terrestrial mammals. The lengths of corresponding bones tend to be proportional to (body mass)0·35 and the diameters to (body mass)0·36, except in the family Bovidae in which the exponents for length are much nearer the value of 0·25 predicted by McMahon's (1973) theory of elastic similarity. Comparisons are made between mammals of similar size belonging to different orders.  相似文献

Iron inefficiency in the maize ( Zea mays L.) mutant ysl is caused by a defect in the uptake system for Fe-phytosiderophores. To characterize this defect further, the uptake kinetics of Fe-phytosiderophores in ysl was compared to the Fe-efficient maize cultivar Alice. Short-term uptake of 59Fe-labeled Fe-deoxymugineic acid (Fe-DMA) was measured over a concentration range of 0.03 to 300 μM. Iron uptake in Fe-deficient plants followed Michaelis-Menten kinetics up to about 30 μM and was linear at higher concentrations, indicating two kinetically distinct components in the uptake of Fe-phytosiderophores. The saturable component had similar Km (∼ 10 μM) in both genotypes. In contrast. Vmax was 5.5 μmol Fe-DMA g−1 dry weight [30 min]−1 in Alice, but only 0.6 μmol Fe-DMA g−1 dry weight [30 min]−1 in ysl. Uptake experiments with double-labeled 59Fe-[14C]DMA suggest that in both cultivars Fe-DMA was taken up by the roots as the intact chelate. The results indicate the existence of a high-affinity and a low-affinity uptake system mediating Fe-phytosiderophore transport across the root plasma membrane in maize. Apparently, the mutation responsible for Fe inefficiency in ysl affected high-affected uptake and led to a decrease in activity and/or number of Fe-phytosiderophore transporters.  相似文献
