Heat stress in feedlot cattle is known to reduce their performance. The challenge comes in determining reliable predictors of current and near-future changes in thermal status and performance. A 42-d study, using crossbred (Bos taurus) steers was conducted during summer months (July through August) to identify best environmental determinants of rumen temperature (Trumen) and feed intake (FI) in feedlot cattle with access to shade. A further goal was to define the relationship between Trumen and FI. Shade coverage was approximately 50%, and all animals were provided standard feedlot diets and water ad libitum. Intraruminal telemetric boluses recorded Trumen several times each hour. Ear tags, telemetrically connected to a feed monitoring system, provided FI data using RFID technology. Data loggers recorded ambient conditions in sun and shade, along with black globe temperature. Regression analyses identified daylight black globe and air temperatures in shade, with one hour delays, as the best predictors of Trumen. Prediction of FI was much less reliable. Unexpectedly, Trumen was not superior to ambient variables in predicting FI. Maximum daily temperature humidity index, calculated using BG in sun with a 5-d lag, was the best significant predictor of FI. These results indicate for feedlot cattle that although air temperature alone in the shade may be the best predictor of Trumen in the heat, black globe temperature in the sun may be a better determinant of feed intake over time. Additional studies are needed to verify the delayed FI response which seems unusually long.  相似文献

引进草种在亚热带边坡草坪上常遭遇遮阴和干旱,造成草坪退化甚至死亡。以具有边坡草坪开发价值的本土植物野生荩草为材料,设置5种遮阴度和4种干旱度交互形成20种协同处理,研究遮阴和干旱对荩草生理代谢及抗性系统影响的协同作用。结果表明,荩草具有极强的耐阴和抗旱潜力,可通过光合策略、代谢策略、抗性策略使植株逐步适应或应对生境胁迫,在重度遮阴或干旱下仍可存活。遮阴或干旱对荩草光合作用、物质代谢、抗氧化酶系统和细胞膜完整性有极显著影响。遮阴和干旱对荩草光合指标、代谢指标、抗性指标和受伤害指标有显著协同作用。Pn主要受遮阴影响,Gs主要受干旱影响,适度遮阴和干旱协同处理可提高荩草光合能力。干旱对荩草物质代谢的影响大于遮阴,氮代谢比糖代谢和呼吸作用受干旱或遮阴的影响更大,适度遮阴和干旱协同作用可改变荩草代谢水平。遮阴、干旱对抗氧化酶活性的影响不同,遮阴和干旱对POD有显著协同作用,对SOD和CAT有极显著协同影响,适度遮阴和干旱协同作用可提高荩草抗氧化酶活性。遮阴、干旱对细胞膜伤害性物质的含量影响不同,遮阴和干旱对SP含量无协同作用,对Pro、H_2O_2和MDA含量有显著协同作用,协同作用增加了荩草细胞膜受伤害的风险。遮阴和干旱对生理代谢及抗性系统影响的协同作用,提高了荩草的抗逆潜力和生态适应能力。  相似文献

Selection of a suitable shade material can be difficult without data that quantify material effectiveness for stress reduction. A summer study was conducted during 2007 using instrumented shade structures in conjunction with meteorological measurements to estimate relative effectiveness of various shade materials. Shade structures were 3.6 m by 6.0 m by 3.0 m high at the peak and 2.0 m high at the sides. Polyethylene shade cloth was used in three of the comparisons and consisted of effective coverings of 100%, 60% with a silver reflective coating, and 60% black material with no reflective coating. Additionally, one of the structures was fitted with a poly snow fence with an effective shade of about 30%. Each shade structure contained a solar radiation meter and a black globe thermometer to measure radiant energy received under the shade material. Additionally, meteorological data were collected as a non-shaded treatment and included temperature, humidity, wind speed, and solar radiation. Data analyses was conducted using a physiological model based on temperature, humidity, solar radiation and wind speed; a second model using black globe temperatures, relative humidity, and wind speed was used as well. Analyses of the data revealed that time spent in the highest stress category was reduced by all shade materials. Moreover, significant differences (P < 0.05) existed between all shade materials (compared to no-shade) for hourly summaries during peak daylight hours and for ‘full sun’ days.  相似文献

There is a trend to reduce the space allowance per animal in cattle feedlot, despite its potential negative impact on animal welfare. Aiming to evaluate the effects of space allowance per animal in outdoor feedlots on beef cattle welfare, a total of 1350 Nellore bulls (450 pure and 900 crossbred) were confined for 12 weeks using three space allowances: 6 (SA6), 12 (SA12) and 24 (SA24) m2/animal (n = 450 per treatment). Bulls were housed in three pens per treatment (n = 150 per pen). The first 6 weeks in the feedlot were defined as ‘dry’ and the last as ‘rainy’ period, according to the accumulated precipitation. Animal-based (body cleanliness, health indicators and maintenance behaviour) and environmental-based indicators (mud depth and air dust concentration) were assessed weekly during the feedlot period. Most of the health indicators (nasal and ocular discharge, hoof and locomotion alterations, diarrhoea, bloated rumen and breathing difficulty) were assessed in a subset of 15 animals randomly selected from each pen. Coughs and sneezes were counted in each pen. Maintenance behaviours (number of animals lying and attending the feed bunk) were recorded with scan sampling and instantaneous recording at 20-min intervals. Postmortem assessments were carried out in all animals by recording the frequencies of macroscopic signs of bronchitis, pulmonary emphysema, nephritis and urinary cyst and by measuring the weight and cortical and medullar areas of adrenal glands (n = 30 per pen). Compared with SA12 and SA24, SA6 showed a greater number of sneezes per minute during the dry period and a greater percentage of animals with locomotion alterations during the rainy period. Coughing, diarrhoea and nasal discharge affected a larger number of animals in the SA6 relative to the other two groups. During the rainy period, there was a lower percentage of animals with nasal and ocular discharge, and a greater percentage of animals with abnormal hoof and lying. A lower percentage of animals in SA6 and SA12 (but not SA24) attended the feed bunk during the rainy relative to the dry period. A mud depth score of 0 (no mud) was most frequent in SA24 pens, followed by SA12 and then SA6. Adrenal gland weight and cortical area were lower in SA24 animals compared with those in SA6 and SA12. The results show that decreasing the space allowance for beef cattle in outdoor feedlots degrades the feedlot environment and impoverishes animal welfare.  相似文献

Sunburn has become one of the major threats to apple fruit production in South Africa and other countries with Mediterranean climate. Some climate‐ameliorating measures have been developed to control sunburn in apples. Effects of the climate‐ameliorating measures, viz. evaporative cooling, Surround® WP and shade net, on leaf gas exchange of a 5‐year‐old orchard of ‘Cripps’ Pink’ apple were investigated during hot summer days in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Evaporative cooling increased net photosynthetic rate (A) and stomatal conductance (gs) because of its lowering of leaf temperature and leaf‐to‐air vapour pressure difference (VPD). Shade net also reduced leaf temperature because of reduction in photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD). Quantum efficiency of photosynthesis was increased under shade net to compensate for reduced PPFD. Shade net also reduced transpiration rate more than A, resulting in increased midday water‐use efficiency. The diurnal trends of A and gs in the Surround WP and control treatments were similar, indicating limited ameliorative impact of Surround WP. Furthermore, Surround WP typically reduced maximum rate of carboxylation and the light‐saturated rate of electron transport. In all treatments, A decreased by 70% when leaf temperature increased from 35°C to 40°C. In conclusion, all treatments affected leaf photosynthetic gas exchange. Evaporative cooling enhanced leaf A and gs because of distinct ameliorative effects on leaf temperature and VPD. Shade net reduced leaf temperature with no consistent effects on leaf gas exchange attributes. Surround WP had limited or no impact on leaf temperature and negatively affected leaf gas exchange attributes.  相似文献

A field study was conducted on a 5-year-old orchard of ‘Royal Gala’ apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) in Stellenbosch, South Africa, to investigate whether the measures employed to control sunburn in fruit, viz., evaporative cooling, Surround WP and 20% black shade net affect leaf photosynthetic gas exchange attributes in comparison to untreated control during the 2003/2004 season. Shade net significantly reduced midday leaf net photosynthetic rate (A) compared to evaporative cooling. Furthermore, shade net and Surround WP significantly reduced midday leaf stomatal conductance (gs) compared to evaporative cooling and control. Evaporative cooling increased light saturated photosynthetic rate by 27 and 24% compared to shade net and Surround WP, respectively. Light compensation point and dark respiration of shaded leaves were about a third of the other treatments and about 50% less than the control leaves, respectively. Shade net down-regulated photosynthetic capacity of the leaves as evidenced by lower maximum rate of carboxylation and light saturated rate of electron transport compared to control leaves. Sunburn control treatments reduced day respiration by 60–70% compared to the control. Response of A and gs to increasing temperature showed only slight increase in both A and gs with increasing temperature from 20 to 30 °C. A declined at 35 °C in Surround WP and shade net leaves while it declined at 40 °C in evaporatively cooled and control leaves. Evaporative cooling and control had higher gs than shade net and Surround WP at all leaf temperatures. In conclusion, shade net down-regulated photosynthetic reactions and Surround WP and shade net reduced leaf gs and increased the vulnerability of leaf A and gs to high temperature compared to evaporative cooling and control.  相似文献

 Two tree shades (TS1 and TS2) and an artificial shade structure (AS) were evaluated using black globe temperatures (BGTs) to assess their effectiveness in reducing heat load. The artificial structure consisted of a black woven polypropylene cloth providing 80% shade, mounted on 2.5-m-high eucalyptus posts. The work was carried out at Rafaela Experimental Station, Argentina, during the summer (January and February) 1994. BGTs and floor temperatures were measured in concrete floor holding pens with and without artifical shade. The results showed no difference between TS1, TS2 and AS, their average BGTs being 30.2 (SD 0.58), 29.0 (SD 0.70) and 30.2 (SD 0.74)°C, respectively. BGTs under all three shades were significantly lower (P<0.01) than the average BGT recorded outside: 35.5 (SD 1.12)°C. Average BGTs in holding pens were 32.4 (SD 1.38) and 39.9 (SD 1.91)°C for shaded and non-shaded areas (P<0.01). The corresponding average floor temperatures were 27.8 (SD 0.68)°C and 47.7 (SD 2.13)°C (P<0.01). To assess the effects of shade on animal well-being, afternoon rectal temperatures (RT) and respiratory rate (respirations per minute, RR) of lactating cows were recorded twice a week. Rectal temperatures were significantly higher for non-shaded cows (P<0.01), mean RT being 40.1 (SD 0.65)°C vs 39.3 (SD 0.42)°C for the shaded animals. Corresponding RRs were 78.9 (SD 18.0) and 60.7 (SD 10.6) (P<0.05). It was concluded that: (1) tree and artificial shades produced similar effects, (2) shading the holding pen with an 80% shading cloth was effective in reducing heat load and floor temperatures, and (3) access to shade in our pasture-based system improved animal well-being. In general, one animal is considered dominant over another animal if it has won more fights than its opponent. Whether this difference in won and lost fights is significant is neglected in most studies. Thus, the present study evaluates the impact of two different calculation methods for dyadic interactions with a significant asymmetric outcome on the results of social network analysis regarding agonistic interactions of pigs in three different mixing events (weaned piglets, fattening pigs and gilts). Directly after mixing, all animals were video recorded for 17 (fattening pigs, gilts) and 28 h (weaned piglets), documenting agonistic interactions. Two calculation methods for significant dyads, that is, dyadic interactions with a clear dominant subordinate relationship in which one animal has won significantly more fights than its encounter, were proposed: pen individual limits were calculated by a sign test considering the differences of won and lost fights of all dyadic interactions in each pen; dyad individual limits were determined by a one-sided sign test for each individual dyad. For all data sets (ALL, including all dyadic interactions; PEN or DYAD, including only significant dyads according to pen or dyad individual limits), networks were built based on the information of initiator and receiver with the pigs as nodes and the edges between them illustrating attacks. General network parameters describing the whole network structure and centrality parameters describing the position of each animal in the network were calculated. Both pen and dyad individual limits revealed only a small percentage of significant dyads for weaned piglets (12.4% or 8.8%), fattening pigs (4.2% or 0.6%) and gilts (3.6% or 0.4%). The comparison between the data sets revealed only high Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients (rS) for the density, that is, percentage of possible edges that were actually present in the network, whereas the centrality parameters showed only moderate rS values (0.37 to 0.75). Thus, the rank order of the animals changed due to the exclusion of insignificant dyads, which shows that the results obtained from social network analysis are clearly influenced if insignificant dyads are excluded from the analyses. Due to the fact that the pen individual limits consider the overall level of agonistic interactions within each pen, this calculation method should be preferred over the dyad individual limits. Otherwise, too many animals in the group became isolated nodes with zero centrality for which no statement about their position within the network can be made.  相似文献

Summary Behavioural activity, and core and surface temperatures of 4 unrestrained Galapagos fur seals were recorded in the natural habitat during their first weeks of life. Climatic variables were registered simultaneously. Pup behaviours were divided into bouts of resting (55% of total time), sucking (23%) and other activities (22%). Pups maintained a constant body temperature from their first day. Core temperature (T e ) was 37.7° C±0.3° C (x ± SD) over 39 pup-days and 8 pup-nights. Skin temperature was correlated with T c , but flipper temperature was not. No daily T c rhythm was detected. Microclimate data were used to calculate operative temperature T e . Environmental temperatures can be very high, with T e above T c 6–9 h a day for animals exposed to the sun, but below it in the shade. T c is about 22° C at night. Pups avoid overheating mainly by withdrawing into the shade and reducing activity to a minimum during the hot hours of the day. Sun-exposed pups could be active at any time during the day if they had access to water, which was usually around high tide.  相似文献

One-year-old olive trees (cv. Koroneiki) were grown in plastic containers of 50 000 cm3 under full daylight and 30, 60, and 90 % shade for two years. The effects of shade on leaf morphology and anatomy, including stomatal density and chloroplast structure, net photosynthetic rate (P N), stomatal conductance (g s), and fruit yield were studied. Shade reduced leaf thickness due to the presence of only 1–2 palisade layers and reduced the length of palisade cells and spongy parenchyma. The number of thylakoids in grana as well as in stroma increased as shade increased, while the number of plastoglobuli decreased in proportion to the reduced photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). The higher the level of shade, the lower the stomatal and trichome density, leaf mass per area (ALM), g s, and P N. Shade of 30, 60, and 90 % reduced stomatal density by 7, 16, and 27 %, respectively, while the corresponding reduction in P N was 21, 35, and 67 %. In contrast, chlorophyll a+b per fresh mass, and leaf width, length, and particularly area increased under the same shade levels (by 16, 33, and 81 % in leaf area). P N reduction was due both to a decrease in PAR and to the morphological changes in leaves. The effect of shade was more severe on fruit yield per tree (32, 67, and 84 %) than on P N indicating an effect on bud differentiation and fruit set. The olive tree adapts well to shade compared with other fruit trees by a small reduction in stomatal and trichome density, palisade parenchyma, and a significant increase in leaf area.  相似文献

The energy content of finishing diets offered to feedlot cattle may vary across countries. We assumed that the lower is the energy content of the finishing diet, the shorter can be the adaptation period to high-concentrate diets without negatively impacting rumen health while still improving feedlot performance. This study was designed to determine the effects of adaptation periods of 6, 9, 14 and 21 days on feedlot performance, feeding behaviour, blood gas profile, carcass characteristics and rumen morphometrics of Nellore cattle. The experiment was designed as a completely randomised block, replicated 6 times, in which 96 20-month-old yearling Nellore bulls (391.1 ± 30.9 kg) were fed in 24 pens (4 animals/pen) according to the adaptation period adopted: 6, 9, 14 or 21 days. The adaptation diets contained 70%, 75% and 80.5% concentrate, and the finishing diet contained 86% concentrate. After adaptation, one animal per pen was slaughtered (n = 24) for rumen morphometric evaluations and the remaining 72 animals were harvested after 88 days on feed. Orthogonal contrasts were used to assess linear, quadratic and cubic relationships between days of adaptation and the dependent variable. Overall, as days of adaptation increased, final BW (P = 0.06), average daily gain (ADG) (P = 0.07), hot carcass weight (P = 0.04) and gain to feed ratio (G : F) (P = 0.07) were affected quadratically, in which yearling bulls adapted by 14 days presented greater final BW, ADG, hot carcass weight and improved G : F. No significant (P > 0.10) days of adaptation effect was observed for any of feeding behaviour variables. As days of adaptation increased, the absorptive surface area of the rumen was affected cubically, where yearling bulls adapted by 14 days presented greater absorptive surface area (P = 0.03). Thus, Nellore yearling bulls should be adapted by 14 days because it led to improved feedlot performance and greater development of rumen epithelium without increasing rumenitis scores.  相似文献

Using behavioural indicators of thermal discomfort, that is, shade seeking, panting scores (PS) and respiration rate (RR), we evaluated the effect of hot summer conditions and shade, for a herd of adult Holstein dairy cows and a herd of Belgian Blue beef cows kept on pasture in a temperate area (Belgium). During the summer of 2012, both herds were kept on pasture without access to shade (NS). During the summers of 2011 and 2013 each herd was divided into one group with (S) and one without (NS) access to shade. Shade was provided by young trees with shade cloth (80% reduction in solar radiation) hung between them. For S cows, we investigated how shade use was related to hot conditions as quantified by six climatic indices. The heat load index (HLI), which incorporates air temperature and humidity, solar radiation and wind speed, was the best predictor of the six indices tested. In 2011, there was a relatively high threshold for use of shade. When HLI=90, shade use probability reached 17% for dairy cows and 27% for beef cows. In 2013, however, at HLI=90, shade use probability reached 48% for dairy cows and 41% for beef cows. For animals from the NS treatment we determined the effect of hot summer conditions on RR and PS (with 0=no panting and 4.5=extreme panting). In both types of cattle, an increase in black globe temperature was the best predictor for increasing RR and PS. Furthermore, we determined how the effect of hot summer conditions on RR and PS was affected by the use of shade. Under hot conditions (black globe temperature ⩾30°C), >50% of the animals under shade retained normal PS and RR (PS<1 and RR<90 breaths per minute), whereas normal RR and PS were significantly less prevalent for animals outside shade. Our findings suggest that, even in temperate summers, heat can induce thermal discomfort in cattle, as evidenced by increases in shade use, RR and PS, and that shade increases thermal comfort.  相似文献

This study used spectral analysis in 2 separate experiments to examine feeding and lying behavior of Bos taurus steers under 2 housing treatments: a feedlot yard stocked at 12.0 m2 per head with a dry, firm pen surface (NDF) and a “high density ”(HDF) feedlot yard stocked at 6.0 m2 per head with a wet and muddy feedlot pen surface. The study conducted 1 experiment in Autumn, another in Spring. The study measured and analyzed ambient temperatures, relative humidity, and barometric pressure half-hourly onsite, using time series cross-correlations to determine whether steer behavior was associated with them. Both NDF and HDF groups showed similar lying and eating duration. HDF steers exhibited patterns of lying and feeding different from those of NDF steers. Spring observations found a number of correlations with temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure. Health and production data showed no differences between treatments. The results indicate that cattle made successful, short-term changes to changed feedlot environmental conditions. However, confirming these findings requires further replication. Spectral analysis was shown to be sensitive enough to detect behavioral differences between treatments and thus has potential animal welfare assessment tool.  相似文献

The effects of the β-agonist ractopamine, recently approved for use in feedlot cattle to improve carcass quality and performance, on fecal shedding Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella in feedlot cattle was examined. In the first study, 20 feedlot steers and heifers were randomly assigned to receive ractopamine or no ractopamine (control) by way of oral bolus for 28 days. Fecal samples were collected daily, and shedding of E. coli O157:H7 determined. When examined during the entire 28-day experimental period, ractopamine decreased (P = 0.0006) the percentage of cattle shedding E. coli O157:H7 (58% vs. 42% for control and ractopamine treatments, respectively). A second study was conducted in a commercial feedlot facility in the southwestern United States. Eighteen pens of cross-bred beef heifers (approximately 100 head/pen and 9 pens/treatment) were randomly assigned to receive either 0 (control) or 200 mg ractopamine/head·d–1. Fresh fecal samples (30/pen) were collected off the pen floor before ractopamine supplementation and again after approximately 28 days of ractopamine supplementation (within a few days of slaughter); the samples were cultured for E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella. The percentage of animals shedding E. coli O157:H7 was decreased when data were pooled across replicates (P = 0.05) in ractopamine-treated cattle compared with controls. The percentage of animals shedding Salmonella tended to be higher (P = 0.08) with the ractopamine treatment when data were pooled across replicates. Although further research is required to confirm these results, the potential food safety implications of this research are intriguing. Growth responses of different tree species to elevated CO2 vary enormously, even when grown under the same basic experimental conditions (such as nutrient supply and light conditions). A test of the hypothesis that this variation is associated with the species’ shade-tolerance is presented. A meta-analysis of 74 logarithm-transformed response ratios RR (total biomass in ∼700 μmol·mol–1 CO2/biomass in current ambient CO2), grouped according to the species’ relative tolerance to shade, revealed that RR differed widely and significantly between seedlings or saplings of woody species of different shade-tolerance. Only comparative studies were included in the meta-analysis, and interference from differences in basic experimental conditions between experiments was minimised. The mean RR of species with very high shade-tolerance was 1.51. This was significantly greater than the value of 1.18 for species intolerant of shade. Smaller differences in mean RR were found between groups of species that differed less widely in shade-tolerance. When responses were categorised according to two aspects of light environment in the experiments, daily integrated or peak photosynthetically active photon flux density (PFD), the differences in RR between different shade-tolerance classes disappeared at daily integrated PFD below ∼20 mol·m–2·d–1 or peak PFD below ∼250 μmol·m–2·s–1. Growth stimulation in juvenile trees is likely to cause increased survivorship in subsequent years. Even if the observed differences in RR were restricted to sites experiencing no or only moderate shading, it appears likely that they will affect species composition of naturally regenerating forests in the long term.  相似文献

We report longitudinal diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) and dynamic contrast enhanced (DCE)-MRI (7 T) studies designed to identify functional changes, prior to volume changes, in trastuzumab-sensitive and resistant HER2 + breast cancer xenografts. Athymic mice (N = 33) were subcutaneously implanted with trastuzumab-sensitive (BT474) or trastuzumab-resistant (HR6) breast cancer cells. Tumor-bearing animals were distributed into four groups: BT474 treated and control, HR6 treated and control. DW- and DCE-MRI were conducted at baseline, day 1, and day 4; trastuzumab (10 mg/kg) or saline was administered at baseline and day 3. Animals were sacrificed on day 4 and tumors resected for histology. Voxel-based DW- and DCE-MRI analyses were performed to generate parametric maps of ADC, Ktrans, and ve. On day 1, no differences in tumor size were observed between any of the groups. On day 4, significant differences in tumor size were observed between treated vs. control BT474, treated BT474 vs. treated HR6, and treated vs. control HR6 (P < .0001). On day 1, ve was significantly higher in the BT474 treated group compared to BT474 control (P = .002) and HR6 treated (P = .004). On day 4, ve and Ktrans were significantly higher in the treated BT474 tumors compared to BT474 controls (P = .0007, P = .02, respectively). A significant decrease in Ki67 staining reinforced response in the BT474 treated group compared to BT474 controls (P = .02). This work demonstrated that quantitative MRI biomarkers have the sensitivity to differentiate treatment response in HER2 + tumors prior to changes in tumor size.  相似文献

Time spent in shade by a group of 6 Brahman (B), 6 Shorthorn (S) and 6 Brahman × Hereford—Shorthorn cross (BX) steers was studied in an experimental shade-yard and subsequently at pasture. B sought shade least and S the most in both situations; the cooling effect of time spent in shade on S is reported. Time spent in shade was positively correlated with mean radiant temperature and solar radiation in both situation. The amount of time animals spent in shade in an experimental shade-yard was highly correlated with the amount of time spent in shade and in grazing at pasture.Mean values of rectal temperature (Tre), respiration rate (Rr), skin temperature (Tsk) and sweating rate (Sr) measured immediately prior to release in the shade-yard were calculated. Tre and Rr were positively correlated with time spent in shade, both in the shade-yard and at pasture, and negatively correlated with time spent grazing. Sr was highly positively correlated with time spent in shade and negatively correlated with time spent grazing. The relative contribution of the physiological parameters to time spent in shade and grazing, were estimated by stepwise multiple regression models. Rr was the best predictor of the time spent in shade in both situations. The only significant improvement in variance accounted for was by the inclusion of Sr in the time spent in shade at pasture. Tre was the best predictor of grazing time and the variance accounted for by the model could not be significantly improved by inclusion of any other physiological factor measured.It is suggested that shade use and respiration rate could be simple and effective methods to select heat tolerant animals in the tropics. Both are easily measured over a wide range of situations and are better correlates of thermoregulatory behaviour than the other physiological factors measured.  相似文献
