Given how crucial it is to preserve a human-safe and sustainable environment, the rapid discovery of possibly lethal heavy metals such as Hg(II) has drawn much attention in recent years. A novel sensor, known as (E)-2-((10-octyl-10H-phenothiazin-3-yl)methylene)hydrazine-1-carbothioamide (PTZHC), was synthesized as a fluorescence ‘on–off’ sensor for Hg2+ ions. Coordination alters organic molecule electron densities, quenching the fluorescence intensity. PTZHC was described completely with the help of FTIR and 1H-NMR spectrum studies. The Hg2+ ion was successfully detected using the PTZHC sensor even when there were other metal ions present. The limit of the detection was estimated to be 2.5 × 10−8 M and the Job's plot examination implied that PTZHC was bound to Hg2+ with a simple 1:1 stoichiometry in s CH3CN/H2O (9:1, v/v) suspension. To further cast light on the bridged effect on geometric and optoelectronic characteristics, time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) at the B3LYP/6-31G(d) level and DFT were both examined.  相似文献

Over the past few decades, considerable interest has been shown in developing nano- and microcarriers with biocompatible and biodegradable materials for medical and biotechnological applications. Microencapsulation is a technology capable of enhancing the survival rate of bacteria, providing stability in harsh environments. In the present paper, we developed a technology to encapsulate microorganisms within polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA)-based microcapsules (MPs), employing a modified double emulsion solvent evaporation technique, with Pseudomonas putida KT2440 as a biotechnological model strain. The resulting MPs display a spherical morphology and an average particle size of 10 μm. The stability of the MPs was monitored under different conditions of storage and stress. The MPs remained stable for at least 24 days stored at 4°C in a water suspension. They exhibited greater tolerance to stress conditions; encapsulated cells remained viable for 2 h in alkaline solution and after 24 h of H2O2 exposure at 10 and 20 mM. Results suggested the potential of MPs as a microcontainer of bacterial cells, even for biotechnological applications requiring high alkaline conditions and oxidative stress. We validated the potential applicability of the PHA-based microencapsulation method in other microorganisms by encapsulating the predatory bacterium Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus.  相似文献

Echinodorus ‘Indian Red’ is an underwater plant, used worldwide for aquarium ornamentation. An efficient method for in vitro propagation and plantlet acclimatization of this popular aquarium plant was standardized. Surface-disinfected shoot-tips were cultured in submerged conditions in a solid–liquid bilayer medium, consisting of an upper, liquid layer (sterile distilled water) and a lower, solid layer Murashige and Skoog (MS) basal medium supplemented with 3.0% (w/v) sucrose, 0.8% (w/v) agar-agar, and plant growth regulators (PGRs) in different combinations and concentrations. The combination of 2.5 mg L−1 6-benzylaminopurine and 1.0 mg L−1 α-naphthaleneacetic acid improved the multiplication rate to a maximum of 26.8 ± 0.51 shoots per explant after 60 d of culture. The number of multiplied shoots increased with each regeneration cycle, thus from only 26.8 ± 0.51 shoots per explant (first regeneration cycle), this number increased to 33.5 ± 0.58 (second regeneration cycle), and to 38.3 ± 0.62 for the third regeneration cycle with the same medium composition. The highest number of roots (8.3 ± 0.28) per shoot was induced in the presence of 1.0 mg L−1 indole-3-butyric acid, but further growth of these roots was stunted. The best rooting was achieved on PGR-free ½-strength MS medium, where 6.1 ± 0.21 roots per shoot were induced with 5.8 ± 0.35 cm length after 30 d of culture. The regenerated plantlets were successfully acclimatized to submerged underwater conditions, with 100% survival rate. The present protocol is suitable for the commercial propagation of Echinodorus ‘Indian Red’ for aquarium-industries.

She seeks to teach how to think like and to actually be a biologist, working in teams and looking at real-world problems. She emphasizes a learner-centered model of classroom work that promotes and enhances lifelong skills, and has transformed biology education at the University of Minnesota through several efforts including developing the interactive, stimulating Foundations of Biology course sequence, encouraging active learning and open-ended research; supporting the construction of Active Learning Classrooms; and establishing Student Learning Outcomes, standards that measure biology education. A ‘Goldilocks’ hypothesis for dispersal of biological control agents   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The rate at which biological control agents disperse from release sites has important implications for their establishment and spread. Low rates of dispersal can yield spread that is too slow and may necessitate redistribution efforts for importation biological control and a high density of release sites for augmentation. Low dispersal rates may also lead to inbreeding at the site of release. On the other hand, high rates of dispersal can lead to Allee effects at the leading edge of the invasion front, potentially reducing the likelihood of establishment. Given these disadvantages associated with both low and high dispersal rates, we argue that intermediate rates of dispersal are likely to maximize the probability of establishment and appropriate spread for biological control agents released in the context of either importation or augmentative biological control. We consider this putative relationship a ‘Goldilocks hypothesis’ since it posits an optimum at intermediate values. In this review paper we begin by discussing the rationale for the Goldilocks hypothesis and then provide a case study from our work on importation biological control of the soybean aphid, Aphis glycines. Work on the soybean aphid parasitoid Binodoxys communis has shown that long-distance dispersal of immature parasitoids within winged migrating aphids is unlikely. This is likely good news for importation biological control because parasitoids dispersed in this manner would likely encounter crippling Allee effects. On the other hand, results from a field release study also suggest that female B. communis females (but not males) disperse actively from release sites. This female-biased dispersal may lead to strong mate-finding Allee effects and therefore may make establishment less likely.  相似文献

Yams (Dioscorea rotundata) were processed and fermented to the traditional West African dried yam flour Elubo. Yam slices were blanched at 60°C for 10min and then fermented at 30°C for 24h. The microbial population increased with fermentation time during the first 24h of natural fermentation with a fall in the pH from 6.2 to 5.4. The dominant aerobic mesophilic bacteria consisted of Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus brevis, Lactobacillus delbrueckii and Bacillus subtilis. Significant contributions were also made by Lactococcus lactis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Citrobacter freundii and the yeasts Pichia burtonii and Candida krusei. Accelerated natural lactic fermentation was achieved by repetitive use of the previous fermentation batch as an inoculum through back-slopping at a rate of 10% (w/v). After three consecutive fermentation cycles, the microflora was dominated by L. plantarum and L. brevis. Fermentation of blanched samples with pure cultures of the isolates showed L. plantarum L. brevis and B. subtilis to be the main species responsible for pH reduction and in changes in the browning levels of the reconstituted flour paste (amala). The typical colour of amala is disliked by many individuals and it seems possible that amala with a lighter colour which will be more acceptable can be produced by fermentation.  相似文献

We investigate several versions of a simple game of sexual selection, to explore the role of secondary sexual characters (the “handicap paradox”) with the tools of signaling theory. Our models admit closed form solutions. They are very much inspired by Grafen’s (J Theor Biol 144:517–546, 1990a; J Theor Biol 144:473–516, 1990b) seminal companion papers. By merging and simplifying his two approaches, we identify a not so minor artifact in the seminal study. We propose an alternative model to start with Grafen’s sexual selection theory, with several similarities with Getty (Anim Behav 56:127–130, 1998).  相似文献

An interactive data input, storage, retrieval and treatment system (LAMES) is described for use in histophatological studies where pathologists evaluate tissues without any identification (termed evaluations which are ‘blind’). The system produces the mean values of individual groups within an experiment, and results of statistical comparisons between the groups. The system was implemented on a Hewlett-Packard (HP) 1000-F minicomputer operating under RTE-6/VM, and was written using FORTRAN IV.  相似文献

Two experimental tasks in psychology, the two-stage gambling game and the Prisoner''s Dilemma game, show that people violate the sure thing principle of decision theory. These paradoxical findings have resisted explanation by classical decision theory for over a decade. A quantum probability model, based on a Hilbert space representation and Schrödinger''s equation, provides a simple and elegant explanation for this behaviour. The quantum model is compared with an equivalent Markov model and it is shown that the latter is unable to account for violations of the sure thing principle. Accordingly, it is argued that quantum probability provides a better framework for modelling human decision-making.  相似文献
