Ichnological analysis of Eocene deep-pelagic whitish chalky calcilutites interstratified with high-energy calcarenite beds in the lower part of the Petra Tou Romiou section (southern Cyprus) was conducted to interpret the development and evolution of the trace maker associations during calcilutite deposition after high-energy episodes. The trace fossil assemblage from the chalky calcilutites consists of Chondrites isp. (Chondrites intricatus and Chondrites targionii), Planolites isp., Taenidium isp., Thalassinoides isp., and Zoophycos isp., typical of the Zoophycos ichnofacies. A composite chalky ichnofabric reveals a multi-tiered association of burrowing animals: the uppermost tier determines a mottled background, the upper tier shows the highest trace fossil abundance and diversity (Planolites, Taenidium and Thalassinoides), the middle tier features Zoophycos and large Chondrites, and the deepest tier consists mainly/exclusively of small Chondrites. This ichnofabric has an autocomposite character, associated with bioturbation by a single ichnocoenosis and gradual upward migration of the tiered macrobenthic community as the pelagic calcilutite sedimentation slowly progresses. There are no changes in the trace fossil assemblage between or within calcilutite intervals, regardless of the associated calcarenite beds. This supports a stable, mature, background calcilutite trace maker association, which recovers shortly after the deposition of high-energy calcarenites. In turn, there would have been a rapid re-establishment of paleoenvironmental conditions during pelagic calcilutite accumulation after episodic deposition of any calcarenitic material.  相似文献

This study integrates ichnological and sedimentological data to refine depositional sequences and interpretations of sea-level dynamics for the shallow marine, Albian–Cenomanian Aitamir Formation in northeastern Iran. Three ichnofabrics are present in a succession of glauconitic mudstone and sandstone. This is a sequence that grades upward from a lower glauconitic sandstone unit with trough cross-stratification, hummocky and ripple cross-lamination into a fining-up unit of mudstone with intercalated sandstone beds. The lower unit contains an ichoassemblage of the OphiomorphaPalaeophycus ichnofabric (upper shoreface), whereas the upper unit bears ichnoassemblages of the Thalassinoides ichnofabric (in a distinctive level at the top cycle which demarcates the base of the next cycle) (middle shoreface) and the ChondritesPlanolites ichnofabric (lower shoreface). An upper shoreface–lower shoreface trend from the OphiomorphaPalaeophycus ichnofabric to the ChondritesPlanolites ichnofabric represents a deepening-upward sequence. An integrated sedimentological and ichnological approach has allowed the recognition of the internal organization of the sequence and the characterization of significant discontinuity surfaces at sequence scales. Thalassinoides ichnofabric reveals colonization of firmgrounds during prolonged times between erosion and deposition related to transgressive surfaces. Transgressive surfaces (sequence boundaries) are generally well-cemented and marked by increased glauconite content, and densely crowded, predominantly vertical or oblique, relatively large, very distinct, unlined, and uncompacted burrows (omission suite) and are associated with rare highly abraded and fragmented shell remains.  相似文献

Jurassic radiolarians from 220 samples in Queen Charlotte Islands, B.C., Williston Lake, B.C., east-central Oregon, Baja California Sur, southern Spain, Austria, Slovenia, Turkey, Oman, Japan and Argentina were studied in order to construct global zonation for the Pliensbachian, Toarcian and Aalenian stages. Well-preserved faunas from continuous stratigraphic sections in Queen Charlotte Islands provide the most detailed record for this time interval, and all collections are tied to North American ammonite zones or assemblages. Collections from nearly all other areas lack independent dating except for early Toarcian carbon-isotope dating in Slovenia and late Aalenian ammonites in Spain.A database of 197 widely distributed updated taxonomic species was used to construct a Unitary Association (UA) zonation for the interval. A global sequence of 41 UAs was obtained for the top of the Sinemurian to the base of the Bajocian. The first and the last UAs represent the Late Sinemurian and the Early Bajocian respectively. The remaining 39 UAs were merged into nine zones (four Early Pliensbachian, one Late Pliensbachian, one Early Toarcian, one Middle-Late Toarcian, and two Aalenian) according to prominent radiolarian faunal breaks and ammonite data. The new zones are the Canutus tipperi - Katroma clara Zone (latest Sinemurian/earliest Pliensbachian); Zartus mostleri - Pseudoristola megaglobosa, Hsuum mulleri - Trillus elkhornensis and Gigi fustis - Lantus sixi zones (Early Pliensbachian); Eucyrtidiellum nagaiae - Praeparvicingula tlellensis Zone (Late Pliensbachian); Napora relica - Eucyrtidiellum disparile Zone (Early Toarcian); Elodium pessagnoi - Hexasaturnalis hexagonus Zone (Middle and Late Toarcian); Higumastra transversa - Napora nipponica Zone (early Aalenian); and Mirifusus proavus - Transhsuum hisuikyoense Zone (late Aalenian). These zones can be correlated worldwide and link previously established UA zonations for the Hettangian-Sinemurian and the Middle to Upper Jurassic. The new zonation allows high-resolution dating in the studied interval and provides a solid basis for analyzing faunal turnovers and the paleobiogeography of Jurassic radiolarians.  相似文献

An exceptional buildup of thin-shelled bivalves (3.5 m thick and more than 12 m long), apparently the largest in the literature, is reported from the External Subbetic (Betic Cordillera, southern Spain). Calcareous nannofossils indicate the NJT8 biozone (late Aalenian) below the buildup and the NJT9 biozone (early Bajocian) at the base of the buildup. The thin-shelled bivalves, commonly referred to as filaments, are Bositra-like forms, an opportunistic bivalve that flourished under stressed conditions. Geochemical proxies (carbon isotopes, Porg and Babio, and Cr/Al, V/Al and Ni/Co ratios) indicate that the marine environment was subjected to changes in oxygenation and trophic conditions, which, under the optimum states, promoted extremely high rates of production of the thin-shelled bivalves. The large buildup accumulated on the sea-floor under favorable hydrodynamic conditions and local topography. The significance of these depositional characteristics in relation to the previous literature is discussed.  相似文献

In a fine-grained Lower to Middle Kimmeridgian marly limestone rhythmite succession, with scarce benthos, fluctuations in ecological and depositional conditions that affected the substrate are detected by analysing trace-fossil assemblages. The dominant grey mudstones with Chondrites and Planolites superimposed on lumpy matrix sediments indicate both late colonisation of dysaerobic mixed layers and the completeness of the stratigraphic record. Major disruptions in rhythmic deposition and substrate colonisation are recorded at the base of thick intercalations of marls in sedimentary packages that were related to tectonic instability. Minor disruptions affected only the deposition of the overlying limestone beds. The trace-fossils reveal changes in the ecological and depositional conditions affecting the substrate during deposition of monotonous marly limestone rhythmites at levels of resolution higher than biostratigraphic, ecostratigraphic and taphonomic resolution. This research demonstrates the application of trace-fossil analysis to approach stratigraphic completeness (maturation) in homogeneous marly limestone rhythmites  相似文献

A second species of the previously monotypic lobster genus Stenodactylina Beurlen, 1928, Stenodactylina rogerfurzei n. sp. is recorded from the upper Aalenian of the Wutach area (Baden-Württemberg, SW Germany). Like the type species, Stenodactylina liasina Beurlen, 1928, the new species is based only on a single chela. Originally the type horizon of S. liasina was erroneously reported as being late Toarcian in age, but it in fact came from a bituminous limestone bed within the lower Toarcian Posidonia Shale. Hence, the known stratigraphical range of Stenodactylina is expanded from the early Toarcian to the late Aalenian.  相似文献

The Fuentelsaz Section is located in the Castilian Branch of the Iberian Range (Guadalajara, Spain). Its exceptional Lower-Middle Jurassic transition outcrops led to its designation as the Global Boundary Stratotype Section and Point for the base of the Aalenian. The sediments of the Toarcian-Aalenian transition at Fuentelsaz are composed of marls with interbedded limestones in rhythmic alternation. Marls are dominant in the Toarcian and the Opalinum Zone up to the middle part of the Comptum Subzone. In the remaining Comptum Subzone, marly materials are scarce and limestones predominate. Sedimentation at Fuentelsaz took place over an extensive marine epeiric carbonate platform that was well connected with the open sea. In the Fuentelsaz Section, a total of 43 palynomorph taxa were recorded: 23 spore taxa, 13 pollen taxa, 4 acritarchs, 2 prasinophytes and 1 dinoflagellate cyst. The studied sediment samples were always dominated by terrestrial allochthonous miospores. In general, miospore assemblages are biased due to the transport of pollen from land or islands to the continental platform. Spheripollenites, Classopollis or indeed both pollens numerically dominate the assemblages. Other miospores appear in low numbers. Aquatic palynomorphs are also scarce; Micrhystridium lymensis is the most common. Five palynological assemblages (PA) were distinguished: PA1, PA2 and PA3 are Toarcian in age, PA4 is located at the boundary between the Toarcian and the Aalenian and PA5. This latter palynological assemblage which is lower Aalenian in age shows a strong reduction in palynomorph diversity and preservation in the Comptum Subzone. Palaeoecological analysis of the palynomorphs indicated the presence of calm, oligotrophic sea water. The palaeofloral communities of gymnosperms and vascular cryptogams—which grew in subtropical arid conditions—were poorly diversified.  相似文献

Grammoceratinae (Hildoceratidae, Ammonitina) abound in the Toarcian strata of many western Tethyan localities, especially the Subbetic and Lusitanian basins (of southern Spain and central western Portugal, respectively). They decline through the Aalenian and disappear by the lowermost Bajocian. The genera Asthenoceras, Vacekia (subgenera Vacekia and Nadorites) and Fontannesia are traditionally considered as the last Grammoceratinae, with species of Osperleioceras occurring in the uppermost Toarcian. Grammoceratinae are common in the eastern Pacific, especially Oregon and Alaska where Asthenoceras is abundant. They also occur in the eastern Tethys (Thailand). Although studies of Toarcian to early Bajocian Subbetic and Lusitanian grammoceratins already exist, new material from these and other palaeogeographic areas (England, Portugal and Spain) is revised here. A new genus, Linaresites nov. gen. (for Fontannesia montillanensis Linares and Sandoval) and two new species (Vacekia striata Henriques, and Asthenoceras taverai Sandoval) are described. Another form, “Asthenoceras” sp. A is described and let in open nomenclature. Temporal analysis of Aalenian to early Bajocian Grammoceratinae demonstrates a progressively more evolute morphology through time, sometimes coupled with size reduction. Palaeogeographic evidence suggests that during the early Middle Jurassic, western Tethys and eastern Pacific were temporarily well connected, possibly through the Hispanic Corridor, as demonstrated by the similarity between Tethyan and eastern Pacific Grammoceratinae.  相似文献

This study integrates ichnological and sedimentological data to interpret depositional environments of the mixed siliciclastic-carbonate fluvial to marine sediments of the Geirud Formation (Upper Devonian) in the central Alborz, northern Iran. Lithofacies analysis shows that these sediments are deposited in fluvial, tidal, shoreface, and shelf environments. Fluvial and tidal deposits are characterized by the presence of bi- to multi-directional cross beddings, reverse directional current ripples, low angle cross beddings, and herringbone cross beddings, with a few scattered Skolithos and Palaeophycus. Shoreface sediments, accumulated in a storm-influenced setting, are characterized by a preferentially interface and low diversity Cruziana ichnoassemblage (Rhizocorallium, Thalassinoides, Palaeophycus, Chondrites, and Ophiomorpha). In contrast to the fluvial-tidal assemblage, the storm-influenced shelf sediments display a highly diversified, mixture of dwelling and feeding forms (Arenicolites, Protovirgularia, Diplocraterion, Palaeophycus, Thalassinoides, Chondrites, and Helminthopsis), reflecting the presence of adequate food resources both in substrate and water column under normal salinity conditions. A fluvial-shelf replacement of the weakly to scarcely bioturbated sediments by the Rhizocorallium-Thalassinoides suite (Cruziana) – Chondrites-Helminthopsis (distal Cruziana) suite from the lower to upper parts of the succession clearly indicates an overall deepening upward in the Geirud Formation. In contrast to the lower part, generally of restricted environment, the upper part of the succession mainly shows open marine conditions. Ichnofabric development is controlled primarily by depositional conditions, e.g., bottom water oxygenation, sediment type, food abundance, and hydrodynamic level, which all exert control on substrate colonization style.  相似文献

The end-Permian mass extinction has been widely documented to be accompanied with oceanic anoxia, which was considered as one of the most plausible killing mechanisms. However, it is still unclear when anoxia began to occur and how widely affected during the pre-extinction interval. In this study, Lopingian bottom-water oxygen level changes around the Wuchiapingian–Changhsingian boundary (WCB) at the northern Penglaitan section in Guangxi are analysed based on trace fossil assemblages and ichnofabric indices. Detailed bed-by-bed ichnological analyses confirm the presence of trace fossils Chondrites intricatus, C. isp., Palaeophycus isp., Planolites isp. A, P. isp. B, Thalassinoides isp. A, T. isp. B, Trichichnus linearis, Zoophycos isp., and other bioturbational structures. The ichnofabric indices around the WCB are mostly 1–2, but rapidly increase to 4–5 in some short intervals. The distinct fluctuations of ichnofabric indices suggest that the oxygen level of sediments was generally deficient, but the dysoxic or anoxic periods were punctuated by several short oxic intervals. Thus, it can be inferred that the benthic organisms were under secularly environmental stresses around the WCB at the northern Penglaitan section. The anoxic conditions unfavourable for aerobiosis in the deep basin may start in the late Wuchiapingian. However, more sections need to be studied to determine whether this is a local or regional phenomenon.  相似文献

Bioeroded gastropod, bivalve and coral specimens (n = 570) were collected from the Jazan area, Saudi Red Sea coast, from which 22 ichnospecies of 8 ichnogenera were identified and illustrated. These traces were produced by clionid sponges (Entobia geometrica, E. ovula, E. cf. goniodes, E. cretacea, E. laquea, E. cf. paradoxa and E. isp.), duraphagous drillers (Oichnus ovalis, O. paraboloides, O. simplex and O. isp.), endolithic bivalves (Gastrochaenolites cf. dijugus, G. lapidicus, G. torpedo and G. isp.), polychaete annelids (Caulostrepsis taeniola, C. isp., Maeandropolydora sulcans, M. isp. and ?Trypanites isp.), acorn barnacles (Rogerella isp.), and vermetid gastropods (Renichnus isp.). The seashells act as hard substrate for colonization by serpulid worm, bivalves, bryozoans, and barnacles. Ichnogenus Entobia was most abundant (56.1%), followed by Gastrochaenolites (25.4%), Caulostrepsis (5.3%), Trypanites (4.2%), Maeandropolydora (3.2%), Oichnus (2.8%), Renichnus (1.9%), and Rogerella (1.0%). Oichnus occurred on the thin-shelled and smooth molluscs, while most Gastrochaenolites borings were found in the larger and thicker seashells as a suitable substrate for the settlement of polychaetes, lithophages, naticids, mytilids, and vermetids. Presence of annelid traces among radial ribs and at the siphonal areas of bivalves is indicative of nutrient capturing from water flow during the lifetime of these bivalves, within a shallow, high energy marine environment, where disarticulation, fragmentation, and abrasion of the seashells were abundantly observed.  相似文献

The Early Cenomanian (mid-Mantelliceras dixoni Zone) Schloenbachia/Inoceramus virgatus Event of NW Europe is recorded in five calcareous ‘marl’-limestone couplets rich in inoceramid bivalves of the Inoceramus virgatus plexus. The 1.3–6.8m thick beds represent a bundle of precession couplets inferred to have been deposited during a short-term cycle of sea-level change triggered by the 100kyr short eccentricity cycle within the Milankovitch periodicities. A burrowed omission surface terminates the Schloenbachia/Inoceramus virgatus Event in most places. Rock accumulation rates vary in different sections between 13 and 68Bubnoff units (mm/kyr) for the complete 100kyr cycle with extreme values ranging from 10 to 100Bubnoffs at shorter (i.e., 20kyr precession couplet) scales. Taphonomic and microfacies trends suggest deposition below fair-weather wave base with frequent to sporadic reworking of the sea-floor by storm waves for proximal and medial sections. The distal sections were close to, or even slightly below, maximum storm wave base. The biofacies of the Schloenbachia/Inoceramus virgatus Event is strongly dominated by inoceramid bivalves (65–85%). The two representatives of Inoceramus virgatus, I. virgatus virgatus Schlüter and I. virgatus scalprum Böhm, are not geographic subspecies as they co-occur in the same beds. However, proximal morphs tend to be more strongly ribbed and flatter whereas distal ones are more inflated and smoother, representing ecophenotypes of one polymorphic species. Taphonomic observations and shell morphology suggest that the inoceramids lived as epibyssate recliners. The low species richness and fossil content of the event strata (without the inoceramid bivalves) are attributed to low fluxes of organic matter to the sea-bed during the maximum flooding interval of Cenomanian depositional sequence Ce III. The inoceramids of the virgatus plexus are inferred to have been very effective filter feeders flourishing under nutrient-depleted, low-energy conditions. The Schloenbachia/Inoceramus virgatus Event is an example of a maximum flooding bioevent, forming a widespread marker dominated largely by autochthonous biota.  相似文献

Early Cambrian subtidal shelf substrates were characterized by low water content and steep chemical gradients, conditions likely facilitated by the presence of microbial mats as reflected by an abundance of microbially-mediated sedimentary structures in Lower Cambrian strata. Such substrate conditions would have been unfavourable for burrowing by benthic metazoans. A combination of environmental restrictions and a lack of adaptations to vertical burrowing likely prevented most benthic metazoans from burrowing infaunally in Early Cambrian subtidal shelf substrates. The eventual acquisition of burrowing adaptations by benthic metazoans later in the Cambrian promoted an increase in the depth and intensity of bioturbation and initiated a transition toward well-hydrated substrates in which extensive infaunal activity was possible.Siliciclastic units of the Lower Cambrian succession in the White–Inyo Mountains, eastern California, contain abundant horizontal bioturbation on bedding planes, as documented by bedding plane bioturbation indices, but little vertical bioturbation, as shown by ichnofabric indices and x-radiography. Planolites, a simple horizontal trace fossil, represents the dominant type of bioturbation in these units. Planolites is found in a range of diameters, indicating that more than one species of tracemaker likely produced this type of trace. Although these Planolites do not have a vertical component, their abundance on bedding planes indicates that the activities of Planolites tracemakers had a significant impact on subtidal shelf substrates, represented by Lower Cambrian units in the White–Inyo Mountains, early in the Cambrian substrate revolution.  相似文献

Alterations of the burrowing behavior of two benthic invertebrates living in intertidal mudflats, the polychaete Nereis diversicolor and the bivalve Scrobicularia plana, were studied in individuals exposed to soluble copper. The design of the contamination procedure took into account the results assessing the influence of some natural factors potentially able to influence burrowing (artificial vs. natural sediment, lighting, size of the shell for bivalves). Animals were exposed for 4 d to concentrations ranging from 25 to 150 μ g Cu l? 1. At the end of exposure, the burrowing kinetics in clean sediment were determined after 1 and 2 d, then the animals were frozen until acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity determination. Even at the lowest tested concentrations, copper caused hypoactivity in organisms belonging to both species studied. Behavioral impairments were not related to AChE activity inhibition. Metabolical or physiological disturbances could be the cause of these impairments. Concentrations affecting burrowing behavior were below those responsible for lethality in these species.  相似文献

The outcrops of the Xiangshan Group have been studied since the beginning of the twentieth century, yielding a rich macroflora (the Xiangshan Flora), mainly from the lower part of the Xiangshan Group (South Xiangshan Formation). Nevertheless, no palynological data have been published so far from the South Xiangshan Formation. The present study provides the first palynostratigraphic data of the South Xiangshan Formation. More than 50 fossil taxa from 30 fossil genera have been identified, allowing for a more accurate dating. The most characteristic taxa are Polycingulatisporites triangularis, Quadraeculina anellaeformis, Manumia delcourtii, Ischyosporites variegatus, Callialasporites turbatus, C. trilobatus, C. minus, and Sestrosporites pseudoalveolatus, suggesting a late Toarcian-late Aalenian age for the South Xiangshan Formation. These results are consistent with previous studies suggesting a middle-late Early Jurassic age for this formation; consequently, the most probable age for the South Xiangshan Formation is late Toarcian (late Early Jurassic).  相似文献

Erosion and transport of juvenile benthic invertebrates, including bivalves, have the potential to alter patterns of distribution and abundance during the early post-settlement period. However, the factors influencing rates of postlarval dispersal are not well understood. Both hydrodynamics and behaviour (e.g. burrowing) are likely to play a role in determining patterns of transport of juvenile bivalves. To determine the relationship between sediment transport and bivalve dispersal, experiments were conducted in a racetrack flume to examine the effect of grain size, flow, and clam size on rates of erosion of two species of juvenile clams (Mya arenaria and Mercenaria mercenaria). Results of the experiments were compared to predictions of erosion thresholds based on the physical characteristics of the sediment and clams. Erosion of Mercenaria was greater than Mya, the opposite of predictions based on Mercenaria's greater density, indicating the importance of burrowing behaviour. In most cases, erosion also was greater in the finer sand, in contrast to the predicted similarity of erosion thresholds of the two sediments. However, clam erosion did increase with increasing shear velocity and decrease with clam size, as expected. The results of this study indicate that both hydrodynamics and behaviour play roles in the transport of these two species of juvenile bivalves and that their vulnerability to passive erosion cannot be predicted solely from knowledge of sediment transport.  相似文献

This paper describes and characterises the co-occurrence of ammonite and benthic foraminiferal assemblages across the São Gião outcrop (Central Portugal), a reference section for the Lower-Middle Jurassic boundary in the Lusitanian Basin. The upper Toarcian-lower Aalenian marls and marly-limestones in this section provide a precise and detailed ammonite-based biostratigraphic zonation, with a mixed assemblage of northwest European and Mediterranean faunal elements, associated with benthic foraminifera assemblages with northern hemisphere affinities, both correlatable with the Aalenian GSSP at the Fuentelsaz section (Iberian Cordillera, Spain). A total of 447 well-preserved ammonite specimens and 13.116 foraminifera have been studied; no evidence was detected of any taphonomic processes that could have changed the original assemblages. From a biostratigraphic point of view, the ammonite record has enabled four biostratigraphic units to be recognised (the Mactra and Aalensis subzones of the Aalensis Biozone in the upper Toarcian, and the Opalinum and Comptum subzones of the Opalinum Biozone in the lower Aalenian). With regard to the benthic foraminifera, the taxa identified have enabled the Astacolus dorbignyi Zone and 11 bioevents to be identified, most of which representing local biostratigraphic proxies. However, the increase in the relative abundance of Lenticulina exgaleata Dieni from the upper part of the Opalinum Subzone to the lower part of the Comptum Subzone has a regional value. The constant and continuous ammonite record of northwest European taxa, together with typical Mediterranean taxa – namely Grammoceratinae – throughout the section, the high relative abundance of Miliolina representatives – generally interpreted as foraminifers typical of shallow waters – and the absence of foraminiferal forms typical of cool waters, do not support the inference of cool seawater temperatures attributed to the Early Aalenian, or the global character of the “Comptum cooling event”, at least with reference to the Lusitanian Basin.  相似文献

Twenty-six enigmatic footprints composed of three elongated parallel depressions (two lateral ones and a shorter central one located forward with respect to the others) are described from Middle Triassic red beds of the Tabular Cover in southern Spain. The purpose of this work is the interpretation of these enigmatic tracks. The footprints range from 28 to 48 cm in length and 23 to 44 cm in width. Limestones on top of the footprint-bearing sandstone contain invertebrate traces such as Planolites, Thalassinoides, and Rhizocorallium, and bivalves (Pleuromya, Trigonodus, and Unionites), typical of marine and brackish environments. They indicate that these footprints developed in a coastal or nearly coastal environment. Whereas the enigmatic trace fossils correspond to tridactyl footprints, the digital marks are parallel and do not show any divarication as in typical walking footprints of archosauria. These traces were left when the trackmaker was swimming in a waterbody deep enough for floating only occasionally touching the ground with the digit tips. The tracks formed as a result of the backward sweeping of the tips when the digits came in contact with the bottom while the animal was buoyed by water. They differ from typical swim traces of other archosaurs (such as theropods) that show three longitudinal scratches because in studied tracks the axial digit (III) of the bipedal tridactyl archosaur sinks in the sediment and gives a short and deep scratch. The other digit scratches (from digits II and IV) would correspond to the upper surface of the toes. The studied tracks correspond to Characichnos ichnofacies (swimming tracks composed by parallel scratch marks) and they were made by a bipedal tridactil archosaur or some functionally tridactyl, chirothere tracemaker.  相似文献

The intertidal burrowing crab Chasmagnathus granulatus Dana is the dominant species in soft sediments and vegetated intertidal areas along the SW Atlantic estuaries (southern Brazil 28°S to the northern Argentinean Patagonia 41°S) where it produces dense and extensive burrowing beds. The mud crab Cyrtograpsus angulatus Dana coexists with Ch. granulatus in this area, but it also inhabits areas to the south (northern and central Argentinean Patagonia). A survey covering both areas showed that C. angulatus rarely live in burrows when coexisting with Ch. granulatus, but form large burrowing beds when not coexisting with Ch. granulatus. When both species coexisted, burrowing beds of C. angulatus are restricted to sandy-muddy areas. Only rarely are burrows of C. angulatus found within Ch. granulatus beds. However, when Ch. granulatus were experimentally excluded within their burrowing beds, new settlers of C. angulatus made burrows and maintained them until they reached large size. Paired (inside and outside Ch. granulatus burrowing bed) sampling during high tide using beach nets showed that C. angulatus rarely venture inside the Ch. granulatus crab beds. Other field experiments showed that adults Ch. granulatus always displace C. angulatus from burrows. Furthermore, in several sites located south of the limit of distribution of Ch. granulatus at the Patagonian coast, soft bare intertidals are dominated by burrowing beds of C. angulatus mixed with the congener C. altimanus Dana. Together, these evidences suggest that the mud crab C. angulatus is displaced from soft bottom areas by the burrowing crab Ch. granulatus. It is an example of competitive exclusion through aggressive interference in soft-bottom habitats when the shared resource is the access to sediment surface, a two-dimensional well-defined resource.  相似文献

Middle-Late Devonian Radiolarians are recorded for the first time in the southern Ural Mountains in Bashkortostan, in a section of Kariukmas Mountain (Upper Eifelian) and on the southern slope of Argagan Mountain (Middle Frasnian). The new Late Eifelian assemblage is composed of 17 species of 11 genera, and Middle Frasnian radiolarians comprise 13 species of 7 genera of spherical, discoidal, pylomate, and spiny radiolarians. A new species, Primaritripus kariukmasensis, sp. nov., is described. The prevalence of discoidal forms in the oryctocenosis suggests shallow marine conditions in the Late Eifelian and Middle Frasnian basins. Two new biostratons, the Upper Eifelian beds with Primaritripus kariukmasensis and Middle Frasnian beds with Primaritripus chuvashovi, are established based on radiolarians.  相似文献
