An insufficiently known bivalve and gastropod assemblage from the Early-Middle Miocene (Tarkhanian-Chokrakian) of northern Sinop Province (Turkey), is analyzed. Environments of the assemblage are reconstructed for the Chokrakian as subtidal, with prevailing lime and sandy bottom and good aeration, and partially well vegetated. Impoverishment of the mollusk biocoenose in this part of the marine basin (only 18 bivalve and 22 gastropod species recorded) compared to other areas, including the closest regions, Bulgaria on the west and Georgia on the east, is emphasized. The relatively low diversity of the fauna is probably connected not only with insufficient collecting, but with special hydrological conditions. A special aspect of the fauna is highlighted by the presence of the bivalve Circomphalus foliaceolamellosus subplicatus (Orb.), which is rare in the Chokrakian.  相似文献

The temporal variation of the gastropod fauna inhabiting sandy sediments of the Ensenada de Baiona (Galicia, Spain) was studied at three subtidal sites from February 1996 to February 1997 by means of quantitative sampling. A total of 5,463 individuals representing 51 gastropod species and 22 families were found. The family Pyramidellidae was the most diverse in number of species (11 species), followed by Rissoidae and Trochidae (4 species each). The dogwhelk, Nassarius reticulatus, and the rissoid snail, Rissoa parva, were the numerically dominant species at the three studied sites; those and other abundant species showed their greatest densities by the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. In general, univariate measures of the assemblage (number of species, abundance, diversity and evenness) showed variations through time; greater values were recorded between summer and autumn depending on the site. Multivariate analyses done on abundance data showed certain seasonality in the evolution of the assemblage as expected for shallow subtidal sandy sediments at temperate latitudes; those seasonal changes were mostly related to variations in abundance of numerically dominant species. Although the measured sedimentary variables did not show significant correlations with faunal univariate parameters, sediment heterogeneity due to the presence of mats of Zostera marina L. and shells of dead bivalves might explain the differences in composition of the gastropod assemblage among sampling sites.  相似文献

The distributions of mangal gastropod snails in Hong Kong were investigated by transect studies in nine mangals from around the coast. Fifty-one species of mangal associated were found, of which 25 were considered common. Gastropod faunas varied considerably between sites, both in terms of number of species and species composition. No one gastropod assemblage was found to be typical of the Hong Kong mangal. Local habitat differences were considered to have a major influence over species distributions, both within and between mangals. It is concluded that if species diversity is to be preserved then a representative sample of mangals needs protection.  相似文献

Large cassid gastropods found in close association with Oligocene mysticete whale skeletons in a deep water setting indicate a novel trophic relationship. Bones of early mysticetes are preserved in close association with a recurring assemblage of bivalve taxa that are common components of fossil and recent hydrothermal vent and cold methane seep localities. Living members of these bivalve groups harbor sulfide-oxidizing autotrophic bacteria and comparisons with recent whale-falls indicate that they utilized bone-oil seepage. But unlike recent whale-falls, this fossil invertebrate assemblage is volumetrically dominated by large individuals of the cassid gastropod Liracassis apta that are preserved with their apertures adhering to the bone surfaces. Comparisons with recent cassoidean taxa and their ecological settings suggests that Liracassis apta belongs to the subfamily Oocorythinae, not Cassininae, and was an opportunistic scavenger in deep water, low oxygen environments. Oocorythine gastropods radiated rapidly on the northeastern Pacific margin during the Late Eocene and Oligocene to become the most commonly recorded gastropod in shelf and slope settings.  相似文献

Two gastropod assemblages from the Carnian (Upper Triassic) Raibl Beds of the Mežica region (Karavanke Mountains, Slovenia) are described. The almost monospecific, older assemblage from Mežica Mine was found as a thin shell pavement in the clastic sequence. This association apparently originated during a period of reduced sedimentation. The younger assemblage from Helena Creek was found at the upper surface of an oolitic and oncoidal limestone and represents a more diversified fauna of a crinoid/coelenterate/polychaete meadow. Together, both assemblages contain 11 gastropod species. Five of them are left in open nomenclature, two are known from other localities in the Alps, and the remaining four are new. The new species are Sloeudaronia karavankensis (Skeneidae), Helenostylina mezicaensis (Coelostylinidae), Ampezzopleura slovenica and Striazyga crnaensis (Zygopleuridae). This study quantified the degree of coincidence between living and dead molluscan faunas in a shallow-water coral reef environment in the Indian Ocean. The results were compared with those from a similar life:death study in the northern Red Sea, and with those published for reef corals and soft substrata molluscs. The proportions of quantitatively important taxa are robust to sampling intensity, but fidelity indices and rank-order correlations are strongly influenced by quantitatively unimportant taxa. Distinct differences between life and death assemblages were recognized, which are due to distinct biases in the death assemblage. Bivalves that lived in close contact with living corals are preferentially overgrown after death and should provide considerable temporal and ecological information in a potential fossil record, as they will be preserved within a rapidly growing reef framework. Some gastropod taxa are preferentially transported into surrounding soft substrata postmortem. Here they will be affected by time-averaging and taphonomic disintegration typically occurring in sediments resulting in the associated loss of much temporal information. Most gastropod shells, however, are inhabited by hermit crabs postmortem, which may strongly alter the fossil gastropod community structure. The results are similar to a comparable study in the northern Red Sea, with a major exception being the strong dominance of hermit crab-inhabited gastropod shells in the death assemblage of the Seychelles. Comparison of life:death assemblages between hard and soft substrata, in keeping with the northern Red Sea study, showed the strong dominance of dead shells in the soft substrata with the converse on the hard substrata. This results from different accumulation conditions for dead shells in soft substrata. Fidelity indices are well suited to demonstrate that sedimentary death assemblages are typically remarkably robust reflections of local community composition but they do not record the strong biases in death assemblages of coral reef associated hard substrata molluscs and are therefore unsuitable for comparisons of life and death assemblages in reef environments.  相似文献

Summary A rather diverse gastropod fauna from Sarmatian deposits of the Austrian/Hungarian Eisenstadt-Sopron Basin was studied. The fauna derives from two layers of clay and silt within a siliciclastic section at St. Margarethen in Burgenland (Austria). These layers are interpreted as littoral mudflats which formed during the Sarmatian (Late Middle Miocene) along the western coast of the Central Paratethys. Strong shifts in the composition of the gastropod fauna, dominated by Potamididae (Cenogastropoda: Cerithioidea), within each layer indicate successions of limnic-fluvial to oligohaline, brackish-littoral, and marine-littoral environments. These shifts in facies are reflected by an alternational of thePotamides hartbergensis assemblage,Granulolabium bicinctum assemblage, and thePotamides disjunctus assemblage. The speciesJujubinus turriculus (Eichwald, 1850),Gibbula buchi (Dubois, 1831), andCylichnina elongata (Eichwald, 1830) are reported for the first time from the Sarmatian of the Paratethys.Mitrella agenta nov. sp. (Neogastropoda: Columbellidae) is introduced as a new species. These species might represent relics of the diverse Badenian fauna but could also prove a minor ingression of marine species from an adjacent bioprovince in the Late SarmatianMactra “Zone”.  相似文献

  1. Terrestrial gastropods (slugs and snails, Mollusca: Eupulmonata) are destructive pests of brassica crops. These organisms defoliate plants and contaminate the harvest, leading to reduced crop yield and marketability. Losses caused by molluscs have escalated in recent years in Brazil.
  2. We aimed to determine the seasonal activity of gastropods in brassica fields and unravel the environmental variables associated with these dynamics. Gastropod abundance, assemblage and within-plant distribution were also compared among Brassica oleracea cultivars (broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower).
  3. Mild temperatures and rainy periods were found to coincide with gastropod peaks. Regression analyses confirmed a positive association of rainfall and humidity with gastropod abundance, whereas gastropod abundance increased with decreasing temperature. Deroceras laeve (Müller) (Agriolimacidae) and Bradybaena similaris (Férussac) (Bradybaenidae) were the most constant species. Mollusc abundance and assemblage differed amid B. oleracea cultivar; cabbage had the highest abundance and its species composition differed from broccoli and cauliflower. Slugs and snails were more concentrated on lower plant portions, regardless of the cultivar.
  4. Management efforts should be reinforced in mild-temperature and rainy periods to reduce damage by gastropods, and cabbage should be monitored more closely than other cultivars.

The gastropod Terebralia palustris (Linnaeus) isone of the largest prosobranchs found in tropical intertidal habitats. Theadults form feeding aggregations and frequently dominate the surface of muddysubstrates, where they clearly destabilize the sediment surface. We tested thefollowing hypotheses: 1. The gastropod has negative effects on the density ofinfaunal animals because of potential food competition and/or surface sedimentdisturbance. 2. The disturbance exerted by T. palustrisresults in more variable infaunal assemblages, especially where intensity ofdisturbance is high. To address these hypotheses gastropods were eitherenclosedor excluded from experimental cages, which were randomly assigned to blocks asfar as 300 m apart on an intertidal mudflat in East Africa. Afternine weeks of enclosure the gastropod at high densities clearly affected themeiofauna assemblages. Several meiofauna groups were found in significantlyreduced densities in the presence of the gastropod compared with control cageswithout the gastropods, supporting our primary hypothesis. In cages withoutT. palustris a cyanobacterial carpet developed while thiswas not evident in enclosure cages. T. palustris had nosignificant impact on the macrofauna assemblage. In support of our secondhypothesis, multidimensional scaling ordination (MDS) suggested that there wasan increased variability of meiofauna within cages with high density ofT. palustris.  相似文献

A horizon in the late Visean Ruddle Shale from Arkansas contains the oldest well-preserved gastropod protoconchs known from the Americas. The gastropod fauna consists of a diverse larval shell assemblage and a low diversity assemblage of juvenile gastropods that probably had a benthic life habit. Gastropod larval shells are always isolated, i.e. the gastropods did not complete their life cycle (no metamorphosis) and were unable to become benthic. This was caused by unfavorable environmental conditions on the soft muddy bottom that was probably due to anaerobic to exaerobic conditions. The absence or scarcity of bioturbation caused by invertebrate detritus or sediment feeders in both shale and concretions (formed before compaction) favored preservation of the delicate larval shells. The lack or scarcity of infauna and bioturbation as well as the low diversity of the presumed benthos supports an interpretation of a quasi-anaerobic to exaerobic benthic environment. The superbly preserved larval shells demonstrate that there are more caenogastropod clades present in the late Palaeozoic than suggested previously. Some larval shell types have an openly coiled first whorl followed by a planktotrophic larval shell; openly coiled initial whorls are unknown from modern caenogastropods. The vetigastropods have a smooth protoconch of two whorls clearly demarked from the following whorls - a pattern unknown in modern vetigastropods which have a protoconch of less than one whorl and build no larval shell during their planktonic stage. This could indicate a link between Palaeozoic vetigastropods and the caenogastropods.  相似文献

A total of l84 species of marine molluscs has been identified from shells collected on the beach of Iztuzu near Dalyan (Mu?la province, Turkey). Of these, 16 species of gastropod and 4 species of bivalvia are new For the extreme Eastern Mediterranean. The slow rate of mtDNA evolution in turtles poses a limitation on the levels of intraspecific variation detectable by conventional restriction fragment surveys. We examined mtDNA variation in the gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) using an alternative restriction assay, one in which PCR-amplified segments of the mitochondrial genome were digested with tetranucleotide-site endonucleases. Restriction fragment polymorphisms representing four amplified regions were analysed to evaluate population genetic structure among 112 tortoises throughout the species' range. Thirty-six haplotypes were identified, and three major geographical assemblages (Eastern, Western, and Mid-Florida) were resolved by UPGMA and parsimony analyses. Eastern and Western assemblages abut near the Apalachicola drainage, whereas the Mid-Florida assemblage appears restricted to the Brooksville Ridge. The Eastern/Western assemblage boundary is remarkably congruent with phylogeographic profiles for eight additional species from the southeastern U.S., representing both freshwater and terrestrial realms.  相似文献

Rubyspira, a new genus of deep-sea snails (Gastropoda: Abyssochrysoidea) with two living species, derives its nutrition from decomposing whalebones. Molecular phylogenetic and morphological evidence places the new genus in an exclusively deep-sea assemblage that includes several close relatives previously known as fossils associated with Cretaceous cold seeps, plesiosaur bones, and Eocene whalebones. The ability to exploit a variety of marine reducing environments may have contributed to the evolutionary longevity of this gastropod lineage.  相似文献

Predatory gastropod drill holes are an abundant and easily identifiable signal of predation in ancient and modern molluscan shell assemblages. Many workers have used drill holes to interpret patterns of predation intensity and success in fossil assemblages. These studies are predicated on the assumption that the relative abundances of drilled and undrilled shells in an assemblage accurately reflect those of the community from which the shells were originally derived. The underlying assumption is that drilled and undrilled shells are transported into shell accumulations in the same manner. If this assumption is false, shell accumulations do not represent taphonomically unbiased samples, but rather preferentially sorted deposits from which conclusions about drilling predation cannot be made. To test the hypothesis that drilled and undrilled gastropod shells transport at different flow velocities, multiple transport trials were conducted on two morphologically distinct taxa, Olivella biplicata and Euspira lewisii. Individual specimens were placed in a recirculating flume tank and observed from rest (in stable orientation) until they were transported downstream. During each trial, flow velocity was slowly and incrementally increased, so as to avoid pulses of acceleration, until shells began to move downstream. Drilled and undrilled specimens of both taxa demonstrate statistically significant correlations between shell mass and average transport velocity. Similarly sized drilled and undrilled specimens of both taxa do not exhibit significant differences in transport velocity. These results indicate that predatory drill holes do not change the hydrodynamic properties of gastropod shells. Therefore, gastropod shell assemblages are not likely to be affected by differential transport and sorting of drilled and undrilled shells.  相似文献

An investigation on gastropod fauna was carried out on a tidal flat in the Nagura Estuary on Ishigaki Island, the Ryukyu Islands in 1989 and 1998 using similar methods. 470-480 quadrats covering ca. 1900 m2 were surveyed during low tides from February to April in each year. Of the total 19 species recorded, the ranges of eight species had varied significantly between the two surveys, with six species expanding their range and two species contracting their range. Percentage in abundance of muddy-bottom species and tropical (<29 degrees N) species increased significantly between the two years. Topography of the flat also changed: the mouth of the river was narrowed and the elevated sections of the tidal flat expanded. During the period from 1984 to 1998, the farmland development around the study site caused influxes of soil into the estuary and the sea-water temperature was rising. These results suggest that the topographical changes due to soil influx and the rising temperature affected the gastropod assemblage at the study site, by increasing the abundance of muddy-bottom species and tropical species. The methodology used in this study, i.e. surface observation at low tides, includes more than 95% of the gastropod fauna, demonstrating the usefulness of surface counts for the study of soft-bottom fauna.  相似文献

Examination of modern gastropod associations from the low intertidal zone of Isla Santa Cruz suggests that fossil rocky intertidal deposits from this tropical locality will be taphonomically compromised in three ways: (1) Marine hermit crabs, by their use of empty gastropod shells, will mix the shells from varying tidal heights and habitats, thus facilitating mixed associations of such shells in the fossil record, (2) encrusting organisms on crab-inhabited shells are abundant, while boring organisms are almost non-existent, indicating possible differences in postmortem shell retention, and (3) intertidal shells are further taphonomically altered by terrestrial hermit crabs, which transport the shells onto land as well as physically modify the shells. Gastropod fossils from beach and terrace deposits on Isla Santa Fe are interpreted to be a mixed assemblage of rocky intertidal assemblage with few shells indicating influence from marine hermit crabs. Modification of the shell by marine and terrestrial hermit crabs was also evident. A unique polish to the shells at one locality is attributed to the marine iguanas and is only found in the terrace site biologically bulldozed by egg-laying iguanas. Few studies exist on modern rocky intertidal associations in the Galápagos, and the fossil record of rocky shores may provide a baseline for future studies in how community structure has changed over since the advent of humans. Measures of diversity and ecology of marine invertebrate assemblages depend on a variety of factors including environmental conditions and methodological decisions. In this study, the influence of such factors on multi- and univariate assemblage parameters of molluscan death assemblages from the Gulf of Aqaba (Red Sea, Jordan) was evaluated. Sediment samples were collected at two coral reef types, a patch reef at 13 m of water depth characterized by fine-grained sediments and a Millepora-fringing reef with coarse-grained sediments at 5 m of water depth. The upper and lower 10 cm of the sediment column were separately removed and sieved with mesh sizes of 1 and 2 mm. A large dataset of 6400 bivalve and gastropod shells was compiled to evaluate how setting, sediment depth, and sieve size influenced taxonomic composition and species richness, species-abundance patterns and the Shannon–Wiener index, the number of drilled shells per species and drilling frequency (DF) of the assemblage. Setting had the strongest impact on all aspects, followed by sieve size, but sediment depth was insignificant, probably due to complete homogenization of the sediments by reworking and bioturbation. Multivariate assemblage parameters distinguished much better between categories (setting, sieve size) than univariate measures. Sieve size-related disagreements recognized between the two higher taxa are mostly due to the underlying difference in body-size distribution of bivalve and gastropod assemblages. We conclude that species richness and other ecological characteristics of molluscan death assemblages in coral reef-associated sediments will most strongly reflect habitat complexity of the sites chosen, are significantly influenced by methodological decisions (i.e., sieve size), will only poorly preserve temporal patterns, and the results will differ between bivalves and gastropods.  相似文献

An unusual fossil assemblage dominated by superabundant rhynchonellid brachiopods in a stromatactis mud-mound is recorded from the Hăghimaş Mountains (Eastern Carpathians), Romania. The mound mainly consists of bioclastic wackestones to packstones with a very rich macrofauna including crinoids, sponges, juvenile ammonites, and echinoids. The brachiopods represent a low-diversity but high-abundance association, dominated by the rhynchonellids Lacunosella and Septaliphoria. The taphonomical features of the fossil assemblage indicate an autochthonous fauna, with successive generations of brachiopods in life position and complete well-preserved individuals in different growth stage alongside an accessory population of crinoids and sponges. Brachiopod-brachiopod endosymbiotic life strategy is documented for the first time from a post-Paleozoic brachiopod assemblage. The mound reveals abundant stromatactis, filled by radiaxial fibrous or drusy calcite cement and internal polymud sediments. This is the first Late Jurassic (Kimmeridgian) stromatactis mud-mound identified in the Eastern Carpathians.  相似文献
